Review Crompton - Richmond

Matt Shanahan
A wonderful experience. This cafe was delightful. My omelette was tasty, my iced coffee was made to my liking! I ended up sitting here for 3 hours working on a project. Staff were super friendly!! Loved the vibe!!

I had couple of dish here and money i paid was totally worth when the food and coffee came out. Probably the best coffee in Richmond Area. I had chicken taco and English muffin breakfast. I am totally satisfied with the service and food. I highly recommend everyone to give it a try.

I love how cafes now display what milk brand they use, so you know what you’re going for. However, these guys are displaying Milklab and serving Kirkland (aka Costco brand) almond milk with their coffee. Really wanted to support them, and understand that they might be cutting costs, but that’s not honest and the coffee was terrible. Very disappointing experience.

The other reviews—and the owners' responses—pretty much say it all. Wish I'd read the reviews here before trying the place out, but I was walking past. Coffee was undrinkable (milk overheated); went in the bin.

We waited for an omelette and an avo on toast for 25 minutes (we were the only customers) and still not ready, ordered a coffee and milk was off. Sorry but this is just disappointing

This only deserves 1 star because the staff were friendly, but that was probably the only good thing about our experience here. Our food took far too long to come out, and all the orders came out at different times. First order came out after about 20 minutes, second order took about 30 minutes (just a chicken avo sandwich) and the last 2 orders took over 40 minutes. Despite the terribly long wait time, and some extremely overcooked steak, we actually found some of the food to be half decent. Or so we thought. All 4 of us started to develop food poisoning symptoms over the next 24 hours - needless to say, I won't be recommending this restaurant to anyone any time soon.

Great place for coffee and breakfast. Staff is friendly and professional.

7/10 for the soy latte

Coffees were good, however I can’t say the same about the food.
Fish tacos - tortilla was cold, like they had come straight out of the fridge. The sauce was also very sour, uncomfortably sour. In the end, I just ate the fish.
Mushroom toastie - very bland tasting and was cold when it came out. Adding some cheese would be way better.

This cafe was closed for a long time and it appears to have new owners. I was walking past on a hot day so I was glad to have some respite here out of the sun.

The service was ok, although despite the fact that it was a hot day I wasn’t offered any water which was odd. And there was only 1 other person in the cafe so it wasn’t busy.

My strong skinny latte was boiling hot, and the flavour was ok, but I didn’t really like it that much. And for $4.50 it wasn’t cheap!

There are some much better cafes around.

A corner cafe in Richmond with a cute adjoining courtyard. The menu is short and affordable. The fruit wasn’t fresh and the sourdough bread was hard, but overall, the flavours were there. Coffee = yummy. Service is prompt and staff are friendly.

I came here for a chai with my partner last weekend. The chai was ok but lots of loose tea was still floating in the milk when we were drinking it. I wasn’t too impressed with the service - instead of “hi there, how are you?” We received “hi, just after take away?” So instead of sitting down, we ordered two take aways. The girl took my name down for the order when it was only us two in the cafe... After collecting the chai, there was no ‘thanks’ no ‘have a nice day’ and no ‘goodbye’. It’s unfortunate, it’s a cool little cafe with a nice looking menu. I hope I can try it again someday and have a better experience.

Food is good. But that’s where it stops. Service is woeful. We arrived when there was hardly anyone there, our coffees came quick but our food took forever. 2 of us got our food 40 mins after we ordered but the 3rd persons breakfast took another 15 minutes. 1 of us had actually finished our breakfast by the time the last meal came out. We tried to get the waitress’ attention multiple times but she ignored us - obviously knew what we were after. And at the end she asked us how everything was, we told her it was slow and she gave us sass and attitude. Wouldn’t go back.
My boyfriend and I came to your cafe this morning at 8 which was the time you appear to be open through Zomato and instragram but all your chairs we're up and not light or movement inside. We were disappointed if you are no longer open to the public please change your Zomato and instragram account to say you are closed. We were looking forward to trying your place.

Came here in the morning for breakfast and enjoyed every bit of it. Very casual interior and good use of the small space. Nicely lit by natural light.

Coffee was smooth and delectable in strange porcelain cups with i prefered since you could drink the latte still hot and not a glass were you burn your hands.

The food, Smashed Avo and Egg Benedict were so delicious and filling which we were very suprised because the serving size looked quite small. But every bit was delicious. Also becareful because there is chilli and corriander on the avo smash which i do not like but I found the dish still complete with the cheese and almonds.

Definitely coming back for breakfast when I am in the area. :)

Another cute and cosy place in Richmond.
We went for light meals that tasted great and our coffee and chai latte were good as well. It's good quality/price ratio and you get to chill in a really nice spot.
Service was good, staff really friendly and kind.
I recommend it!

Cool. This place is awesome. The owner is very chill. The food is really decent. The coffee is great and the barista is soooooo hot. All in all it is a great place to just chill and have a coffee in this hot weather.
ChefDaParty
This place has been taken over by new owners. A once beautifully designed and well-maintained minimal space has been somewhat spoiled by poorly framed op-shop standard wall art and some unattractive plant holders and clutter. The coffee remains good but the quality of ingredients seems to have slipped.

Wasn't utterly impressed as this place does not have the most appealing cafe look , very plain and minimalistic. The menu however intrigued me and I found the ingredients very interesting, the coffee was excellent and the food .... really tasty, I am definitely going to back, what a find :)

Fresh is how you will describe the place, the menu changes seasonally, the food is flavourful and ingredients are mixed yet keeping Their unique flavour always. Wouldn't call their coffee very great but the breakfast options are outstanding.

This place use to be amazing - Known as the toast cafe of Melbourne, they were doing something different and fun with breakfast. A great place to sit, read a book and a bit of toast on your morning off. It must be under new ownership now as we went there this morning to one other person there. We got sparkling water when we got in, but not liking sparkling water and not even being asked for the option is annoying. We ordered and my partner couldn't get the porridge which wasn't available as stated on the menu, so had to get it differently, which is fine. The food came and it was good, the coffee was good, but I never got the tea I ordered. The staff and service was poor in the way that we were asked 3 times to order before we even looked at the menu. We paid and left and won't be there again. Such a shame as this place use to be amazing.

One of my favorite spots when in Melbourne for breakfast! Relaxed and chill atmosphere and great service! The menu is simple yet satisfying. Pop in for a quick coffee or a nice eggs Benedict...you will be happy!
Big Eyes For A Big Tummy
This places makes very good coffee. Smooth and no bitter after taste at all. I think food was great too and really good value for what we had. Service was friendly. However coffee was slow but food was even more ridiculously slow to come out even though it was not that busy. Lucky we were not in a hurry. Was well aware of the looks on others that told me they also felt their waiting was way too long. Lovely sunny Sunday morning today, we ended up sitting inside which unfortunately felt a little stuffy. Not sure what it would be like on a hot summer's day. Hope it doesn't happen everyday but they had no iced drinks to quench that thirst from the stuffiness!

Perfect brunch on a lazy sunny autumn Melbourne afternoon. Cozy and naturally lit. A touch of retro decor and furniture. Indoor and outdoor dining space. Service was excellent with lovely staff.

The menu is relatively small with healthy, colorful and vibrant dishes. The produce is of high standards- amazing selection of sweets and pastries. Seven seeds Coffee beans are used with highly skilled barrister- smooth with medium strength and some citrus notes.

A relaxed brunch experience, versatile and colorful menu.
Gastroman
Really nice little venue in the middle of what I would almost call a "neutral zone" on Victoria street. Great with a food option that not above 15$, I'm talking about the Vegemite with Gruyere cheese!! Really good coffee and very good service too. I will be back for more.

This tiny, unassuming cafe is a little gem in an otherwise bleak part of Victoria Street. Away from the cut and thrust of the Vietnamese restaurants, Crompton holds its own with great coffee and beautiful food. The avocado with goat's cheese is divine, as was the thick piece of fruit toast. There's a small, al fresco courtyard, and the cafe's interior is thoughtfully decorated with unique art and plenty of plants. My only piece of (unsolicited) advice would perhaps be to put some planters outside to bring the exterior to life. Beautiful place regardless.

I love this joint. My wife and I have been coming here for just about a year now (most weeks) and everything on offer has always been top notch. I have had my fair share of flat whites over the years and I am yet to find a better one compared to what Cam, Nick and the crew serve up at Crompton.

Today we sampled the new menu which has a number of really appealing additions. I had the hummus, avo, dukkah, perfectly poached egg and chorizo crumble. In a word, delicious.

The service from the team is always friendly, genuine and warm. If you want to get service with a fake smile then this place is not for you. Until next week...
First of all, signage on this place is pretty crap. And I don't know Richmond very well.
The address on Zomato is wrong so gps/maps was trying to tell me I would be in fact dining at a furniture store.
Fix that shit!
I ended up googling the addy to get correct address, but as the building of this cafe is pretty plain (and when I passed it there was no one inside), it didn't stand out as the cafe.

They give you sparkling water on entry - which is great, if you like that sort of thing.
Personally I don't like sparkling, but didn't want to be the pain in the ass that asked for tap.

Service was good - coffee came out quite quick, although at the time I ordered there was no one else in the cafe.
Not long after my coffee arrived, a few more people came in for coffees, and another for food.
My order was taking a while, I'd read the paper front to back and was starting to wonder if they'd forgotten about my eggs bene.
30 mins, finally arrived. Waiter apologised, however it would have been nice to have been told when I ordered, that eggs are freshly picked from the farm for each order. 🙄

Taste was great. I really enjoyed the meal.
Just a shame about how S L O W it was to come out, which if when I first ordered, the cafe was packed out - I would understand.

Coffee and eggs Bene was $20.
Hello. Imnikki
When Crompton Coffee first opened its door, it was affectionately known as the toast cafe as they specialised in thick toasts with all sorts of sweet and savoury toppings. The banana & espresso mascarpone and smashed peas with bruleed egg were definitely making their rounds on social media and tasted as good as they looked. A recent menu revamp sees them branching into more substantial dishes such as egg bennies, smashed avo etc,. but still retaining the toast concept for all their dishes. On our visit today, we were left with a bad taste in our mouth after having to wait more than 40 minutes for our food. It wasn't packed so I am guessing that they must have forgotten our order until we followed it up with them. Despite the shortcomings, we thoroughly enjoyed the ingredients on our toast, in particularly the chorizo crumble and the beautifully runny poached eggs. The toasts however was a bit of a disappointment; the sourdough used in my partner's egg bennies was tough and chewy and the sourdough in my hummus and avo was over toasted and crunchy like a cookie. I personally didn't mind it that much until the little bugger poked me on the roof of my mouth. After all is said and done, I must say that I am glad that the coffee was great as always because the long wait time and the food left me underwhelmed. I like it better when they focused on doing simple and scrumptious thick toasts.

Always an amazing range to choose from and the Bircher with panacotta was delicious. Would definitely order it again as its a great choice to not having toast for breakfast. The sparkling water is a classy touch and everything arrives so promptly

Good job guys! You're rocking the breakfast scene

Best coffee on Vic Street, hands down. But the thing I love most about this place is that they are never too busy, too cool or aloof to find you a seat. The avo is amazing and the peanutbutter is great too.

A must try in North Richy

LOVE! Undoubtedly, the toast is delicious and toasted to perfection, as it is not dry and overtoasted, as is often done at many other cafes. The toppings are inspired, and I thoroughly enjoyed the earthy flavour of the beetroot hummus with the hit of chilli flakes on top. However (ironically at a toast cafe!), the drinks truly were the stand out. The chai is brewed to perfection, and I appreciate how large the mug that it is served in, it is definitely value for the price! The mugs are also very thick, meaning that the drinks stay hot for a long time. As small as this kind of thing is, it really makes a difference to the experience, as there is nothing worse than a drink that goes cold within a few minutes. Keep up the good work guys and I'll be back very soon!

Visited on a Sunday at around noon. This is a very cute little corner cafe. It wasn't too busy so we were seated immediately. It did fill up within the next hour or so though. I started off with a nutty, strong cappuccino, which was lovely and aromatic. Our toasts came promptly within 10 minutes.

I ordered the smashed peas with bruléed egg. To be honest I wasn't too keen on the smashed peas. I only ordered it because the bruléed egg sounded extremely enticing. It was my first time having smashed peas and it tasted so better than expected! I'm glad I tried it because now I have discovered that I actually like smashed peas a lot. The egg was cooked to perfection, with both the white and yolk at a delicious, gooey consistency.

My friend ordered the beetroot hummus with cucumber ribbons and chilli flakes. He said that he enjoyed it a lot.

All in all it was a very tasty meal and although it was a single piece of toast, it did fill us up as the slice was super thick! I took off 0.5 because I did think $9 for a single slice of toast with 2 toppings was a bit much. From my understanding the old menu was a lot cheaper. I'm keen to return though, just not often.

This place makes really delicious coffee. The atmosphere inside is beautiful and with summer coming up, it's an awesome spot to just chill out and have a coffee in the sun. The toast they serve here is very tasty too. Wish it was just a bit cheaper for the toasts. But overall a great little cafe!

This place is a little gem. Perfect coffee, great creative menu and friendly service. Whether you are wanting a lazy brunch or a quick coffee before the tram comes, Crompton is a must.

A cool little spot. This end of Victoria Street lacks some quality breakfast/lunch establishments, so this place is refreshing. Its a small place (not much seating), and walking into the place, its nice and has a cool vibe to it. The chairs (weird I know) are super comfortable! Coffee was nice. Service was nice. Food is different, but yum! The menu is definitely one I'd consider unique. If the business could somehow incorporate some eggs onto it, I think it'd be a real hit. Definitely worth a visit!

Pretty good cafe to stop at if you're looking for something a bit different for breakfast in the Richmond area. I had the prosciutto toast and the pear toast. Both were very good. Coffee is decent too.

Loved it, great idea great menu good coffee
Maybe the menu could be better explained.
O and maybe bigger print.
Nothing to do with the review.
Why should my review be over 140 characters?
Great place to grab a quick coffee! Has a limited menu but a good range of choices, both savoury and sweet. The coffee mascarpone was excellent!

Genius idea for a brunch spot! The homemade Nutella is a must do! The service is very good and staff very friendly. I had a chai so can't speak for the coffee. Beautiful decor

This place is the ticket for breakfast in Richmond. They've taken a simple idea, being a toastie and turned it up to 11. Thick cut bread, turned into substantial pieces of heaven. There are classics such as Peanutbutter with honey, Vegemite and cheese... Then bam, something crazy delicious like coffee masrepone, banana and Carmel and peanut brittle. I have such a sweet tooth.

Coffee here kicks arse and they have wifi.
Chasing A Plate
Posted by Chasing a Plate in Richmond on 01/06/2015. It’s been pretty bleak up this end of Victoria Street on the breakfast front. Sure it’s not far to wander down to LBSS or Three Bags Full but there’s nothing like having a spot right on your corner is there? And it’s looking like it’ll be a very good spot indeed. Crompton Coffee, dubbed the ‘toast’ cafe is serving reasonably priced breakfasts comprised mainly of seasonal and classic toppings on thick slices of Rustica bread. There’s yoghurt and fruit and muesli available as well as baguettes and Butterbing cookie sandwiches if toast doesn’t tickle your fancy. But with combinations like vanilla poached quince with ricotta, honey and black pepper and trad Vegemite with grilled cheese, you’d be mad not to give it a go.

Xmas River. I read an online article for this place, so thought we'd check it out on a recent trip to Melbourne. Simple concept, fresh, quality ingredients, lovely staff and fair pricing. Chilled mineral water arrived promptly after we were seated, and was topped up without having to ask. We've been back and they are consistent. Two tram stops from Ikea if you need to gird your loins before, or have a caffeine hit afterwards!

Yummo. Cosy corner. ..serving the yummiest toppings on scrumptious squares of crusty bread, and the coffee is marvellous.

Simple effective and delicious, already planning when I can go back!

Cafe with class. Great coffee with pleasant modern classy aesthetics will make you feel at home. Will return for the good service from Nick and the great croissants!

Nice coffee, premises and the staff are lovely. But the price for the coffee stops me from visiting regularly. $4 for a small and $5 for a regular. I'd love to visit you guys more but being a coffee addict this price blows me away.

Heaven. I just had the fig toast. Put it on your bucket list NOW!!!!

Coffee was superb and strong. The guys were really friendly and because of these two things I will be coming back. Richmond is in need of the combination of awesome coffee, affordable breaky and smiley staff.

Tahini, Banana, Honey Topped Toast. A lovely combination of flavours on toasted freshly baked bread.
The cafe has a bright airy feel, staff are very attentive and the coffee is excellent.

Dreamy coffee & amazing looking toasts but I went for a takeaway prosciutto baguette for lunch which was delicious... They also have a salad of the day too. Staff seemed lovely. Been waiting for something in this area - will become a regular coffee stop.

Happened upon Compton on the way to work -- what a fantastic surprise this was! Really refreshing cafe fit-out with a light, vibrant feel, friendly staff and, most importantly, great coffee and toast. Highly recommend the muesli as well. Will be back.

Amazing toast and coffee!. What a great place, definitely what the area needed! We came for Sunday brunch and were really blown away. Inside is spacious and funky, however we chose to sit in the courtyard and soak up some sun. I chose the fig, ricotta, honey and pepper toast and it was amazing! My husband had the avacado toast and that was equally as yummy. We each had a white coffee and iced latte which were by far the best coffee in the area. To top it all off, the staff were friendly and attentive and more than happy to accommodate our needs. Will definitely be our new regular for Sunday brunch!!

Whilst a cafe specialising in toast isn't a new concept, its the first of its kind to open up in Melbourne. There has certainly been a movement towards single-item menus in the past few years, and whilst toast cafes have achieved popularity in the U.S, cereal and even porridge cafes have recently been popping up in all parts of the world.
