Review Nhu Lan - Richmond

Ferry Gondo
One of the best and cheapest Banh Mi around the city. For $5 I could get a tasty baguette filled with creamy butter and pate, with slices of sweet grilled pork and pickled carrots. Really a tasty sandwich. Always coming back for more. Service was pretty quick a la factory production line.

The best bahn mi - crunchy warm bread, soft fluffy on the inside, with good quality fillings packed in. Other types of breads and pastries also available at budget prices. Can also grab drinks and coffee. Service is friendly and the premise is clean.

Heard about this place by word of mouth and tried the rolls couple of times now. The rolls are fresh and tasty with decent amount of variety. I found the staff friendly and helpful too. On the plus side, they are affordable price wise. Definitely my go to place for some vietnamese rolls !!

Came in just after 5am and the smell of bread was amazing. Nothing beats the smell of fresh bread in the morning. Had four bread rolls. Mixed ham, BBQ pork, BBQ kebab pork, and BBQ chicken. The bread was super fresh and was amazing. Ordered Vietnamese coffee with them as well as well as a few pate chaud (puff pastry $1.8 each). I normally go to the one in Footscray as well. Probably the first time I been to Richmond in the morning. The amount of activity in the kitchen is lots!

Prompt service and delicious Bahn Mi that is affordable. This bakery makes for a great quick lunch.
Mr T
Banh mi was ok 7/10, bit dry inside and not much meat compared to other places. Pate chaud(pastry) was also good.

From my humble banh mi beginnings at N Lee in Collins St I've decided to branch out and finally try some different places to see whether my old favourite lives up to my hype. A lot of people had told me how great Nhu Lan in Footscray was so on a recent trip to IKEA I made a quick stop by the Victoria St store for a pork meatball roll. The roll was nice with a delicious amount of meat and chilli. I'm leaning towards 8.5/10 for this one. The freshness of the rolls compared to N Lee was a slight let down but after all, it was 2.30pm on a Saturday afternoon. Would definitely recommend.

Best banh mi in Melbourne that's not gonna cost you an arm and a leg! Its cheap, delicious and loaded with meats veggies and pate. The bread is crispy and soft. Been coming here since I was a little kid. Also check out the bakery which sells custard buns for $1.50 and the chuad puff which is $2.50. Closes earlier so get there quick!
Foodie_gal
Bahn mi is good but I come for their Bun Bao. Haven't tried the sweets but the savories are good. Best steamed buns!!
Gee
I was craving some Vietnamese on this 43 degree day so I braved the crack-heads and headed on down to Victoria Street. This is a place I hadn’t tried before and it had a 4+ rating. My banh mi was nice - I had the grilled pork. Also got a coconut bun. $5.50 is fairly cheap for a banh mi!

Best BBQ pork roll! I love their sauce 😍 it’s good and affordable! BANH-QUI is good as well~

This is one of the bakeries that tastes the most traditional in Melbourne I’ve tried 👍🏻 can’t complain ab the price, really cheap compared to other places. The quality of the rolls is damn good, freshly baked, a bit crunchy outside soft inside, the meat is tasty, well-marinated, the veggie is fresh n right amount. Besides the rolls, there r also pate chaud - marinated pork pasties, which are amazing as well; plain chinese donuts w sesame seeds n heaps of sweets. Quick service, lovely staffs ❤️

Work colleagues drive me out to Nhu Lan for some authentic banh mi from the heart of Richmond’s little vietnam... Victoria Street. I was very lucky as I came in within a short lull and ordered straight away. My colleague had to go to the ATM as Nhu Lan is cash only and he was not so lucky. I ordered a BBQ pork roll with a double up of chilli. This was a very generously filled roll at only $5.50. I also ordered a pate chaud pastry which was super puffy and equally delicious. A great little find probably 10 years after the rest of Melbourne discovered this gem

I wasn't quite filled with a 10 piece dumpling from Yum Shanghai so gave this place a try. It's definitely a place packed with people and it's mainly available for take away. The ambience isnt great, but neither does any shop in this street has space for some chairs.

This has got to be the best Bahn MI I've tried thus far. Got myself a BBQ chicken Bahn mi, where the bread was crispy, yet soft which was brilliant. Then comes the veggies and a delicious protein portion in a tasty BBQ mix. Good value for your money, and filling for sure!
Elaine
It is located in north Richmond, and is near tram station as well as train station. I was the first time to be here, the sauce in the roll was quite nice! The buns were very crispy as well, but the bbq pork inside was not warm as I thought. The price is $5.50 per roll, it increased 50 cents since last year. Lol, how did I know? I looked up other’s photos of their menu uploaded, it showed $5 each. But it’s still fair. Definitely come and buy one when I passed by one day.
NoCapsicumPlease
A very typical Vietnamese bakery where you can find a variety of breads, especially banh mi sandwiches. A freshly baked roll with crunchy pickles, crispy pork, a hint of salt and pepper, and some herbs (no chilli, thank u) was my regular kind of banh mi here
Quince And Cheese
About to be my new local, now that I live across the street. Somehow, the girls here know exactly how to proportion my Bahn mi (no pate please) so that my last bite always ends with a big chunk of tofu (and coriander if I'm lucky). They're also pretty skilled at adding just the right amount of chilli. And you can't beat that $5.50 price tag! Highly recommend for vegos and vegans of the area.
Ann T
Delicious Vietnamese rolls! Perfect amount of fillings. Also great value for money. Love a tasty BBQ pork banh mi with a bit of chilli. Staff are friendly.
Vegetarian Food Lover
3.5/5
I was very fortunate today as I walked into Nhu Lan when fresh hot bread came out of the oven. I ordered the vegetarian tofu bread for $5.50. It wasn’t the best but it did the job.

Best Banh Mi in the RIchmond area. Always busy during the lunch rush. Roast Pork & Lemon Grass Chicken and meatballs are stand out dishes.
Bear Noms
Delicious Vietnamese rolls which comes with a good serving of ingredients including meat. We usually get the chicken or roast pork and ask for chilli. It’s small but great value for money!
Miss T.A
It is my favourite place to get Banh Mi. The filling is very generous. My usual ones are tofu and bbq kebab. I’m addicted to their mayo and pate spread ! Also try the pork puffs ! The pastry is amazing !
Vivian
One of my go to places if I am ever around the area as I am constantly craving bread rolls ! They add alot of ingredients in your roll and the price is also very cheap
Split The Bill
Fabulous Vietnamese bakery in Richmond. Love the grilled pork balls and the Vietnamese pork puffs. Hubby loves the Banh Mi. It's very popular, food is great and its cheap for the quality.
Steven Gu
Nhu LAN at Richmond. I prefer the Footscray store better than Richmond one. They are all good but this one tastes less than Footscray. Like the yogurt as well.
Meilia Clarissa Tejasoewita
A good place for $5 bahn mi. Its really delicious and its really cheap as compared to another store. I will always come back to this place for their pork bahn mi
Anh Huynh
Best banh mi in town. Other places cant just compare. Had almost everything on the menu and loved them all. The sandwiches unfortunately can go soggy after 15-20 mins

On the way to the shows we stopped for a quick and cheap dinner at Nhu Lan. While we're a regular at their Footscray store for years, we've never been to the Richmond one. This looks interested, though doesn't come in chicken, pork only. . *click to enlarge*. At 5pm it was dead, though we hope still fresh. Back when I was at school (I graduated in 2011) rolls were $4 though these days they're $5. With complimentary pate.

I remember as a kid having banh mi thit from Nhu Lan for lunch at school, and how I felt like the coolest kid with the best sandwiches on the block. Bread is crisp and crunchy on the outside, with a fluffy inside. Cheap alternative, and very filling. Loved the pickled carrots and the chillli gives it the extra kick needed.
Danny Nguyen
The pork roll here is pretty good. Service was quick and efficient. Probably one of the more well known banh mi stores around. Place is cash only.
Ferry Gondo
One of the best and cheapest Banh Mi around the city. For $5 I could get a tasty baguette filled with creamy butter and pate, with slices of sweet grilled pork and pickled carrots. Really a tasty sandwich. Always coming back for more. Service was pretty quick a la factory production line.

I am a big fan of Banh Mi since I tried it first time in Richmond. Then I tried several shops around this area as many shops are selling Banh Mi.
However, this shop is the best ever for me. Baguette is crispy outside and soften inside also meat and veg are fresh as tuned over a lot. Taste and volume is perfect and price is just $5.0~ umm one of my favorite shop!!
ElCompass
Not as busy as the Footscray branch. Got the mixed cold meat banh mi. The filling portion seems even less than the Footscray one which I already feel is less than the norm.

If you'd like to grab a delicious quick lunch with fresh food with reasonable price, Nhu Lan would be one of the options.
The restaurant is accessible by public transport and located in the Victoria Street.
It takes around 10-15 min walking distance from North Richmond station.
It's a humbly looking restaurant and it is meant to be a take away shop as they don't have any table available for customers.

We ordered Banh Mi Ga Ro Ti (Vietnamese Chicken Onion Roll) for $5.00 because we're attracted by the display photo.
The Banh Mi price in Nhu Lan is very reasonable.
It was served with the fresh, crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside bun.
In addition to that, cucumber, vinegary carrot, fresh coriander, chilli, a smear of pate and marinated chicken with onions would make this roll even better.
It had rich taste, well seasoned but not too strong; this Banh Mi was absolutely fantastic.
Unfortunately, the chickens in Banh Mi Ga Ro Ti weren't generous enough compared to the display photo.

Definitely, will come back to try other Vietnamese roll.
Overall we enjoyed the Banh Mi!

Service : 4.0
Taste : 4.0
Price : 4.0
Speed : 4.0

Yay : Fresh and delicious Banh Mi
Nay : The chickens put in the Banh Mi Ga Ro Ti weren't generous

Location : 152 Victoria Street, Richmond, Melbourne
Phone : 03 9429 5545

Not very impressed with the Viet pork roll at all. The pork ham slices are paper thin and small. The pate and pickled carrots are tasteless. The sauce they used is just Maggi soy sauce. I've tasted much better elsewhere such as Springvale which is much more authentic, tasty and more generous with their fillings. I would not go back again.
Lala
It seems a lot people consider this shop as the "best" Vietnamese bun shop in Melbourne, so I decided to try it once instead of going to Phuoc Thanh. It turns out to be a bad decision. The portion of meat and veggies seems a bit less than they would add at Phuoc Thanh. The whole bun just taste flavourless due to the lack of sauce. They don't even cut the spring onions!! As seen in the pic, yep, that's right, I picked out the section of spring onion straight out of the bun! I finished the bun, yet I don't feel filling at all!
Tinmans Treats
It's my favourite Vietnamese bakery on Victoria Street, Richmond. I usually get my banh Mi thit ngoui (pork roll) and sometimes I need a skewer of grilled pork balls (nem nuoung) and Vietnamese pork puff (pate chaud). It's a popular place and it's because the food is good and service is quick and the prices are reasonable if not cheap.
Mitochondria Powerhouse
Probably the best Bahn Mi I've tried - the BBQ chicken and BBQ pork rolls are great. The fillings are always flavourful, and the rolls crisp. Have heard that the little Pate Chauds are nice too.

Would give 5/5 but the amount of meat you get can sometimes vary with who you get making your roll.
Charizard
Had their BBQ Pork Roll which was delicious! The bread was crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside while the fillings were packed with flavours. The BBQ pork was decent whereas the sauce was flavoursome. Personally, I felt that the sauce was crucial to make this bread roll mouth-watering. Moreover, the cucumber, carrot and coriander provided the freshness to balance with the saltiness from the sauce. Last but not least, the chillies gave the spiciness to complete this savoury and flavourful bread roll.
Emily Tran
Service is alright but the main reason to visit Nhu Lan is to eat the banh mi! My favourite roll is the mixed ham roll, it's been a favourite of mine since childhood and can never do me wrong! The bread is so crispy, and the ingredients are so fresh and delicious! You won't be disappointed when coming here to grab a banh mi as evidenced by the long lines during the lunch time rush.
Leena
Based on pastries only.
Nhu Lan makes awesome Vietnamese rolls.
Custard buns had half full and no flavour on the bread.
The cream puff stuffing was under cook and way too big for traditional vietnamese cream puff.
Just order rolls then never get disappointed.
Sancho Pansa
Really good bread rolls, they really fill your roll up, the pork roll is phenomenal, gets really busy around lunch time, as a lot of people from surrounding offices come around. The service is quick. They are very busy for a reason.
FoodieCCC
Had the meat ball roll this morning, which was yummy as always.
There're 2 kinds of meat ball to choose, meat halls on the skewer or meat balls with source. I prefer those on the skewer. The protion is quite big considering its price - only $5.
Sammi C
Pretty good value banh mi's here. The bread is good quality and crunchy and they give you just enough of the cold meats. My favourite is still N Lee in the city, but this place does the job.
Grace
i had the tofu roll (10/10) and i don't have any complains! the bread was crunchy on the outside and a little fluffy on the inside, the vege tasted really fresh and the tofu is a little chewy and has a smoked taste to it. the service is here fast but it can be packed at certain hours. i would definitely come back for more! :)
tip: remove the cut chilli if you can't take spicy!
Thefoodieaddict
By far one of my favourite Banh mi places in Melbourne. They freshly bake the baguettes, crispy exterior and a fluffy soft interior, accompanied by pickled vegetables, pate, butter, coriander and cold cuts. I always get the Banh mi thit nguoi (mixed ham), it's honestly so good and for $5, they are so worth it. Highly recommend this place.
Bernardo Jacobi
The BBQ pork banh mi at this place is just too good, I can't help to go into this place everytime I'm doing my groceries in Richmond. Make sure you have it with chillies, yum!
Gerd
The bread is strange. It's fresh and crunchy and the BBQ pork and all the attendant fillings are spot-on. A good bahn mi. But the bread is strange, you know when you add a baguette to the oven for 60 seconds to "freshen it up" and the crust dries out a bit and its extra crunchy but there are also voids in the bread. I'm not saying they do this but the bread is strange.

Best breadrolls in town. We have to keep coming back either richmond or Footscray Nhu Lan fortnightly regardless where we have moved to in the past 20 years.

Bread and carrot are always nice and crunchy. Pate, I believe, is the homemade secret recipe one. Even the spring onion was thick, crispy, and have sweet aftertaste, which my home grown one cant be compared.

It is always very busy and there is no clues how to line up. I guess if you know how to cross the busy street in Saigon, you will be able to get in and out within 5 minutes. Otherwise, just like me, wait patiently and you will be rewarded with a beautiful freshly made breadroll.
Shannon Tjondro Koesoemo
Best Bahnmi in Melbourne!!! Relatively cheap (~AU$5) and generous in portion. My favorite is their juicy bbq pork. Will always buy at Nhulan when Im around richmond!
Olivia
Best Vietnamese bread rolls in Victoria Street! Can't go wrong with any of the choices. Recent price increase to $5 though. But it's still worth it
Mk Anes
Although it is 50c more expensive compared to the other banh mi thit bakeries down Victoria St- it's the best fob roll bakery in town! Their nem nuong (meatballs on a stick) are to die for!
Daz
Very reasonably priced rolls which are crunchy on the outside, and fluffy on the inside. Tasty fillings such as BBQ chicken, tomato sauce meat balls, onion chicken accompanied by pate, salad and various condiments make this a cheap, filling meal on the go. I've tried others on the street and there's no comparison! For some extra heat, say "Yes!" to their little chillies!
S
Best cold cuts style bahn mi you can get! The bread was fresh and crunchy too. Really tasty but probably not the healthiest "salad roll" you can get.. Cheap though! Pork bao was average. It was the mince kind with egg.. I was kinda hoping for BBQ pork!
Timinmelbourne
Great little Vietnamese roll take away shop on Victoria Street. Been there several times because it's always fresh and tasty. They make their own bread rolls on site, and it can get quite busy. It's a bit hard to find sometimes as there are lots of similar places on Victoria Street but this is the best place I've found so far. The pork or salad rolls are about $4.50-$5 so good value if you want a cheap, healthy alternative to a chain store selling similar food.
SusieK
Good for a quick lunch - the bread is nice and the cold meats taste fantastic. Good for when you want to go on the run. Don't forget to order a soy bean drink.
Darren Borg
Was only introduced to Vietnamese Rolls recently, if they had told me what I would be getting myself into sooner, my life may of been just that little bit better. This would be hands down the best place to grab a Vietnamese Roll on Vic St. It's always busy and the food is constantly being pumped out, which is always a good sign. The bread is just what you want, crunchy but soft inside. Vietnamese Rolls are an inexpensive lunch that is guaranteed to leave you satisfied.
Mrs Mark
Best banh mi in Melbourne by a long shot. Simple, delicious and fresh. Super fast service. The BBQ chicken and marinated tofu rolls are delicious as well. Absolute bargain at $5 a pop
T.Ly
This isn't the best banh mi place in Melbourne, but it's definitely the best one along Victoria Street in Richmond. I've tried the mixed ham, BBQ pork, BBQ kebab, and meatball banh mi so far. My favorites are the mixed ham, which is the classic banh mi, and the BBQ pork. The prices have recently increased by 50 cents, so most sell for $5. It's still an amazing deal for the quality of the fresh, crusty bread and the generous fillings. It's a popular place with many workers behind the counter to get your order finished quickly.

I go here all the time. The in-house bread is always really fresh, sometimes really warm. The rolls are very tasty and extremely low priced for what you get. The Tofu roll is really tasty. I also love their Escargot and Chocolate Croissants. Danishes look pretty good too, must try one soon...

"FAST..FRESH..CHEAP..AND SO VERY YUM...."

We love our Vietnamese Rolls, and have had a favourite place out in the West for a long time now...Lately, I've heard lots about this place in Richmond - NHU LAN BAKERY..and almost every time I've driven down Victoria Street..I've thought.."If I see a carpark..I'll stop..". Trouble is, I've always traversed through at the busiest times of the day..and have missed out..

Today, though, I was passing at about 10am...and happened on an empty car space almost in front of their shop window...unbelievable..!!

I knew when I walked in.."these banh mi were gonna be good" - I could see the confidence on the welcoming Aunties faces.

It is such a very busy place, and yet the remarkable calmness with which the women quickly and diligently work..filling those rolls so generously whilst unwavering in their assured smiles..is quite amazing..I just fell in love with the place..Instantly..

Okay, I bought 4 x BBQ Chicken banh mi, 4 x Salad banh mi. 6 x petite baguettes and 4 x Chinese donuts for under $40 - ASTOUNDING VALUE and everything was extra-ordinary.

The MEAT & SALAD banh mi are all $4.50 each, so too the TOFU & SALAD option, and the SALAD ONLY option is $3.20 - Gorgeous crisp soft rolls, Super fresh vegetables, Well-cooked succulent meats. Authentic tasting sauce.

I actually really loved the SALAD banh mi - spicy fried shallots and chopped toasted peanuts with coarsely grated crisp carrot, cucumber strips, spring onion strips, coriander leaves and a hint of fresh red chilli...

Oh, these are just gorgeous....Wish I worked around there....I'd be having these every single day....morning, noon and night...

Now I know why people have been talking about this place...!!!

Visited in the morning on Wednesday 9th Sep 2015.

One of the best banh mis in Melbourne. Their rolls are super delicious, crunchy and priced reasonably. I would recommend their BBQ Chicken and BBQ Pork rolls as they are the most tasty. The staff are quite fast and friendly as well.
Pg41
Tofu banh mi is super delicious! Also very very good value.
Donovan De Souza
For a place as renowned as they are and in a busy part of the town, the $4 asking price is very impressive and very affordable - in inner city Perth and the CBD these would go for almost twice that price, and we have to drive quite a ways to get our $5 banh mi fix at Nhu Mai. Next time we're in Melbourne I'd love to try their Footscray store, however as it stands I've got to say I think Nhu Mai in Perth has the superior banh mi.
Eve
Nhu Lan is the bakery that often has queues out of the door for their variety of Vietnamese style rolls
Krapow
I don't know much about these pastries but they are undoubtably yet another awesome French influenced Vietnamese delicacy. The pastry is crispy and light and the filling is actually reminiscent of a sausage roll and equally delicious.
NiCNAC
They offered around nine different type of rolls, including vegetarian roll (tofu) and each roll cost around $3.80.
Larry Ma
Bought two pork rolls and a sesame ball and was being charged for $12.50. Feeling odd after I got home and gave them a call to find out should be $10.50(even the lady on the phone couldn't get the price right at first and said $11.50) . The best part was the staff was asking me to check carefully next time. I'm not a regular here and pretty sure I won't be. Their pork rolls are really nice however overcharging is certainly a No-No. What a pity
Robert.powney
Pretty Good.. Nice Rolls. But getting a little mean on the filling.
Jessi Alley
Heaven... Best one I've ever had!
Christopher
Awesome.. Cheap bánh mì that tastes delicious and is always satisfying. It's popular for a good reason and there really isn't much else to say!
Marvelous Mark
$4 friggin dollars for awesome pork and chicken Viet rolls!!
Khayaal Manwani
Disgustingly rude service. Honestly. And extra charge for more than a bite of coriander? Used to be good but no longer coming back.
RnG
THE BEST bbq chicken & tofu rolls!
Brillat_Savarin
No. 5 - Meatball roll is so good. As for ALL the extras too.
Jackieboy
Cheap and delicious! Don't be discouraged if lines are long, the workers are so fast you will be at the front of the queue in no time.
HungryCBDstudent
I like this bakery so much. Firstly the banh mi is probably the best you will get in Melbourne. The bread is crispy on the outside but super soft on the inside which constitutes the perfect bread for banh mi. Fillings are generous and fresh. Personally, I like the mixed ham roll and the tofu roll however all the other options are delicious too. Also don't forget their Chinese donuts, they are a really tasty and a bargain.
Jason Bried
The rolls here are fantastic, highly recommended!
JWeeeeeee
Yum. Epic rolls! I usually go to both here and Footscray whenever I'm in the area.
6ixty
We come from Adelaide just to have the rolls here. Superb!
Jesse Fultone
Amazing every time.
Luxi Zhang
One of the best places for bahn mi in Melb. Crunchy bread, fresh salad, tasty pate and bbq meat, warm and quick service. Always get one when I am in Richmond.
John Smith
I've been coming for over 5 years. This place is King of the Hill without a doubt. They are, as another user stated, "machines" at pumping out these rolls. Totally uncompromising on ingredients and the flavours here are unreal. If you're a Banh Mi addict then you don't need me to tell you how good this place is. If not, then drop what you are doing right now, whip out the car keys and cruise to Richmond. Nuff said
Jeremy Choong
Best Vietnamese rolls on this side of town!
HunGry Boy
Never mind the queues. Lines move quick. The girls are machines and the rolls are delicious
Mr MM Smith
Simply the best Banh Mi in town. The girls work hard behind the counter and always given me a little more than I can handle...you cannot get a subway roll as fresh or as good as these!
Elizabeth Nguyen
Boy who works there is cute
T
Best bakery on vic street by far!. The Vietnamese bread rolls are really yummy here. This would be the bakery to go to on Victoria street.
Malloriah Carey
Delicious tofu roll. Remember to get soy sauce and peanuts, its delicious!
Aly Zhang
Portions barely enough to feed a mouse, incredibly rude service and average flavours make for a very lacking lunch. Try any of the other banh mi places down Victoria St for a much better banh mi!
Edsan
Nice bread. Crunchy n fresh bread. But the filling is inadequate compare to other bahn mi shop. Need to put more filling
Katherine Chiu
Its not good; IT'S GREAT!!! And both the rice and the rolls were made freshly and were not stale. I like these ones better than the ones I get in the city. I would love to come here any day, just for good, clean and cheap food.
