Review Jai Dee Thai - Richmond

A north eastern thai food experience in Melbourne! A traditional, high quality and delicious set of menu options will leave you to your hearts desire. Prompt table service and great drink options too, definitely worth a visit.

Great little Thai restaurant along Victoria St. Generous portion and be careful when ordering spicy level. They have 5 different levels with 5 being the spiciest. It burns so exercise caution. Food wise they are seasoned nicely and authentic Thai. Food - 8 Service - 8 Vibe - 6 Price - $$

Nice place with amazing food and great service. Recommended and it comes with a big plus that it even accepts AMEX cards.

Awesome traditional Thai 🇹🇭 food 🍲. Great cheap lunch specials and big size portions. One of my favourite Thai 🇹🇭 restaurants in Melbourne. Very friendly staff.
Amy Chow
Great little authentic Thai restaurant. My favourite dish was the fried soft shell crab and goes great with the Thai milk tea - helps with the spice of the dish

One of the best local Thai restaurants I have found. Delicious. And hot here really is hot. Not the lame, bland Australiana type Thai.

We were there for dinner. Apparently the dinner menu is not the same as the lunch menu. They offer good deals for lunch, lunch pack for 12.90 give or take. For dinner the prices are higher but still pretty reasonable. The portions were big enough, I got a big bowl of chicken curry which was very fresh and tasty. The coconut rice was also yummy, and standard size. They made a mistake in adding up the bill, so we had to return, but they were nice and easy in handling it. Oh their Eftpos was very slow and it took a few go s to actually work, you might want to take cash with you to make life easier! All in all I would recommend the place though! And I am definitely going back!

Came here for dinner cause we were craving Thai one night! Dishes are priced pretty standard and standard size. The Pad Thai was pretty good, stir fried veggies with basil was delicious, massaman curry with beef was a bit watery, but was a larger serve than other Thai places. The beef itself was quite fatty.<br/><br/>No fuss kinda place - happy to come back for a casual meal.

We went to Richmond for a late lunch but almost everything else was closed, so we decided to give this place a try. <br/><br/>Overall menu has quite limited selection of food. Prices are standard for most Thai places I have been. We ordered Red curry with duck and char-grilled pork with rice (I forgot to take a picture of the curry cos we were too hungry!!). It took us by surprise as the pork was so delicious and juicy. The dipping sauce was tangy with a mix of lemon, herbs and chillies. A must try if you do come here!

I am Thai and I ABSOLUTELY love this place!! Everything we ordered was so so good and the taste was ABSOLUTELY authentic and spot on. This makes me miss home. We ordered Som Tum Thai with Salted Eggs, Larb Moo, Tom Zaab (soup) and grilled chicken with 2 sticky rice. It was heavenly and so spicy. <br/><br/>There were only Thai people in the restaurants or Thai people bringing their local/foreign friends. First I hesitate about coming because of the review on here and the lack of people in the restaurant but did not regret it a single bit! Pretty much the best Thai food in town! <br/><br/>However, I have to comment that the price is a bit on the expensive side with the Som Tum Salted Eggs around $16.50 if I remember correctly. So don’t get too carried away like me!

Another great Thai place in Melbourne that I recommend you try if you’re looking for something delicious, traditional and made with care. We have been here twice and both times have left full and happy about our experience.

Will come back for their green curry, pad grapow and Thai fried rice. However the pad Thai was pretty average. Polite service. Food was a short wait. Off street 2P metered parking outside the restaurant. A nice dining experience overall.

Food are good but feels like not very authentic Thai food! Its been adjusted for Melbourner. The papaya salad is my favorite ,compared to another two Thai restaurant in Richmond. The fish in the Garden is deep fried with Apple which is quite surprised.Stir fried soft shell crab is too sweet. We visited on Monday and they only have one waitress working. She's good but they really need to hire one more regarding the number of customer they are accepting.

It was one fine day on Friday and my mate was craving of Thai food.<br/>We've tried most of the Thai food around North Richmond close to the station but Jaidee Thai, therefore we've decided to go there.<br/>The Thai restaurant was very clean, comfortable and modern look.<br/>The customer service was friendly and nice.<br/><br/>They do have the special between 12.00 - 3.00 PM, my mate ordered one from the special.<br/>However, I always go for Pad Thai as my safety measure everytime I go to Thai restaurant.<br/>I ordered Chicken Pad Thai for $14.90, here you can decide how spicy your food will be cooked which is great.<br/><br/>They have 5 levels and I opted for the level 3, personally it wasn't spicy at all.<br/>I'd recommend if you have a good spicy tolerant, you would go with level 4 or 5.<br/>The Pad Thai came in decent portion.<br/>The noodle was cooked nicely and the chickens were generously served.<br/>Unfortunately, it was too sweet and slightly too watery for a Pad Thai.<br/>The sweetness ruined the overall taste :(<br/><br/>Personally, it wasn't a good value to spend for this taste as it was slightly above the average price for a chicken Pad Thai.<br/>Surely it wasn't the best Pad Thai I've experienced.<br/><br/>I didn't get great impression as the first timer, I'll give another shot next time and see how it goes!<br/><br/>Service: 3.5<br/>Speed: 3.0<br/>Taste: 2.0<br/>Price: 2.5<br/><br/>Yay: N/A<br/>Nay: Pad Thai<br/><br/>Location: 112 Victoria Street, Richmond, Melbourne<br/>Phone: 03 9429 8959

A number of hits and a few misses, I think this place is overall pretty good. The open design of this place looks very good as if this place is meant for summer. That is ... Until you see flies flying around. As for the food, two of the dishes were awesome, the Thai fish cake and Pad Thai. We wouldn't mind coming back here again for those. As for the other two dishes, fried rice and satay, they were just okay at best. Kinda disappointed with the satay especially, the meat was too tough and dry. The sauce didn't help much. As for the drink, ice lemon tea, it was great. Perfect for summer.

Thai food seems to be a bit of a hit and miss in Melbourne; whilst a pad thai is available in every food court, authentic papaya salads are hard to come by. One of my Thai friends gave a glorious recommendation of Jaidee Thai, and I was more than willing to give it a try. Som Tum Thai – $12.00
The City Lane
Jaidee Thai is place we stumbled across by chance while walking up Victoria Street a little while ago. We’d wanted to visit our usual haunt for Thai in this part of town, Jinda Thai, but with a huge appetite and an almost hour long wait for a table, we decided to try our luck elsewhere.

I came here on a Sunday night and was pleasantly surprised. The staff are lovely and the food comes out quickly. We had the Chicken Pad Thai, Chicken Pad garlic and Pepper Stir Fry, and Coconut Rice.<br/><br/>The Chicken Pad Thai was great! The chicken itself was flavourful and tender, and there was a very decent amount of it in the dish. There were also pieces of tofu scattered throughout which was a nice addition. The noodles were cooked well and were delicious. The bean sprouts on top were also very fresh and had a nice crunch to them. The serving size was large, and I was extremely happy with the dish overall.<br/><br/>The Chicken Pad Garlic and Pepper Stir Fry was also great (and got mum's approval). The pepper wasn't too overpowering and the sauce covered all the food. The dish had a nice amount of vegetables as well as chicken; and was once again a nice size. It was very flavourful and the chicken wasn't too overcooked which was great.<br/><br/>The coconut rice was subtly pleasant. It could have been a little more "coconutty" for my liking, but was great nevertheless; and complemented the stir fry well. There was a touch of lemongrass throughout it and fried onions on top which was welcomed.<br/><br/>Overall cost was about $33 too.<br/><br/>Overall, I was very happy with my experience however the place was just a little loud and probably doesn't need a television on the wall. I will definitely be back again!

Tasty Thai food with decent serving sizes. Overall good value. Service is always efficient and friendly enough. I have had better coconut rice but it's not base, just needs a little more coconut milk. Curries -green , red, Penang, are all good.

Delicious casual Thai!<br/><br/>We were here for a quick brunch and got to sample their lunch menu with two stir-fried rice-based dishes.<br/><br/>Hannah order the stir-fry sweet- chili beef witj rice which was yum! The sauce was spot-on, mild in spiciness, a bit sweet, sour, and full of flavours. The beef was tender and the veggies was fresh and crunchy.<br/><br/>Luke got the red curry stir-fried chicken with rice which was also delectable. The chicken was soft, the sauce was a bit fatty and full of coconut fragrance. The fried egg was nice and went well with the dish. Overall, a quick delicious Thai dish for your lunch break!<br/><br/>We'll be back to try their dinner menu!

I'd been craving Som Tam (papaya salad), a dish I've had numerous times. On our trips to Bangkok, I pretty much eat it every day. I was very happy to have tried the Som Tam at Jaidee, it was very good and quite authentic. BUT... it was WAY TOO HOT. I asked for in-between mild & medium. It blew my head off - I was on on fire!! I am a chili eater - in fact, I eat a lot of chili. I don't know if this was a mistake, a breakdown in communication or just they way they rate the 'heat/spiciness' of their food. I will order it again, however, but next time I'll say "no chili".  :-)

I went here tonight w a couple of mates. The food was really good. <br/><br/>We started w prawn spring rolls which were amazing. Fresh and tasty and yummmmyyy haha <br/><br/>Instead of rice we had roti bread which was the best that I've ever had. It's not as heavy as rice and we had individual servings which was great. <br/><br/>Them we shared a massaman curry, which was chunky beef pieces in a peanut sauce. This dish was good, and tasty. The meat could have been marinated more for my liking as this is something that I cook at home. <br/><br/>We had a drunken noodle dish which was delicious, absolutely amazing! This dish was the winner tonight! <br/><br/>Then we had a seafood dish which was chilli spicy but very average. It was meant to be a fish dish but there wasn't a any fish that I saw... mmnn lol<br/><br/>Overall we had a good meal, with generous portion sizes, so be careful how much you order here or you'll be rolling outta there ... just like we did hahaha

Another great meal here. The grilled chicken is to die for and an impressive Pad Thai. I have been here with Thai's and they were very impressed.<br/>For sure worth a visit, make a booking if you are coming on a Friday or Saturday night.

We live quite close so there are a lot of Thai restaurants for us to choose from, but this is now our goto place when we are up for some Thai food. Flavours are great and the serving sizes are good, worth checking out.

Went here with no great hope seeing the reviews. I was wrong. I ordered the Red Duck Curry and it was the best red curry in Melbourne no doubt. I have reviewed multiple highly regarded Thai restaurants in Melbourne so I can confidently say it is the best. The coconut milk taste is infused well with the Lychee which was something different from other places. Duck meat was well prepared. Papaya salad was very nice and grilled chicken was average. Thai lemon tea was pretty descent and the dessert was quite good (mango sticky rice). Their rice was average. This is not the best thai food in Melbourne but it is if you want to eat curry or salad. This placeis certainly among my top 3 Thai restaurants in Melbourne and I think giving them anything below 4 is an understatement. Curry was the wow factor for me. will go again. Service was good. Price was average.<br/><br/>They take chilli very seriously, they have grade 1-4. If you are Thai grade 2 is mild for you and 3 is good, do not go for 4. If you are western go for mild level 1 or 2 if you want to impress and then drink a lot of water. Yes serious chilli measurements here!

Im from Thailand and I can say that this is a very authentic Thai street food, where u can find papaya salad, sticky rice and stuffs. <br/>I love "Tom zab soft bone pork" n "Nam tok moo" MOST !! Highly recommend to melb eaters . if u wanna find thai street food, go to Jaidee :) <br/><br/>

Simple, clean, welcoming fairly small space. Good, wide ranging selection of food on the menu without it being daunting. <br/><br/>Very large portions - garlic & pepper beef excellent and  the gang om (something totally new to me) very good (a traditional spicy chicken & vegetable soup from northern Thailand). The excellent prawn spring rolls were whole prawns wrapped in the pastry and deep-fried. <br/><br/>Note that Jaidee Thai takes its 'spicy' seriously and gives you a 1-5 option with 1 being the mildest. I like spicy a great deal and asked for 2.5 for the gang om. It was just on the right side of fine - any hotter and I certainly would not have been able to eat it. So be warned :)

Best Thai in Melbourne full stop! Authentic, huge portion sizes and the spice level is real! Don't play yourself and get here quick!<br/><br/>Can highly recommend the Green curry, the Pad Se Ew, Mussaman curry, gang om and pad gra prow ( get dat fried egg on top).
Eat Like Ushi
One late evening just before Christmas I was wondering around Victoria Street by myself looking for dinner. I ended up being distracted by some friends coincidentally there and so by the time I tried to eat dinner it was already 9pm. I sought out Jinda Thai (it was closed for the holidays), Arisoo (closed already), Seoul Soul (about to close) and walked past a few slightly open Vietnamese and Laotian places all on the verge of shutting down. Hmmm. The options were limited. I hadn't been to Jaidee Thai before but it was still serving, small enough to be cute and not mass producing food, and seemed like I could get some peace in there.
Cookielessvee
amazing place for papaya salad and pad se ew. Staff were very friendly and the food came out fast and catered perfectly to our tastes. The thai milk tea was refreshing and tasted just the way I liked it.

I don't know. There was good colors and some nice flavors, but nothing anywhere near the same version of those dishes when we tried them in Thailand. I tried the Massaman curry and it was very oily and not too appealing. The pad Thai wasn't the best either, but the portions were massive. 5/10.
World In A Bite
Everything is so sweet .. Nam thok beef and pork should be cooked on the outside only , nice and not chewy... Soup nor mai is also sour... If you want a cheap eat, then this is the place. But if you're after authentic thai, go to Jinda (worth the wait).

Was a little reserved when we first walked through the doors as there was only one set of diners in the restaurant... but we were pleasantly surprised. The place was clean, neat and comfy. Staff was very friendly and efficient.  We ordered Pad Thai with chicken, papaya salad laotian style and Thai milk tea.  The salad certainly pack a punch. We ordered it as medium hot and I really felt the heat. It was worthwhile as it was well balanced and very tasty. I would highly recommend to all who loves a good Thai salad.  The pad thai was a little on the sweet side for me but I still enjoyed it and wouldn't take any points away from them.  The milk tea was sickly sweet, typical of Thai milk tea and exactly what I was after.  Will definitely be back to try other dishes.

This is my favourite local thai place. It's never busy, so great for a quiet dinner or if you don't want to book something with a group of friends. Having BYO also makes it a massive plus, so you can have a cheap and fantastic dinner.<br/><br/>The food here is delicious, I've tried the majority of the menu. The curries are delicious, however I have noticed when I get it takeaway sometimes it's a little runny. The portion's are really big as well, you really don't need an entree, but they are delicious as well, so you might as well!

This is an absolute gem in the rough. Like most restaurants on Victoria st, this is very underwhelming from the outside. But the food speaks for itself, I went with the soft shell crab salad. Let's just say I was very impressed, it came with a large salad as well as perfectly cooked cooked soft shell crab. I will defiantly be returning here on the near future. *Just a warning also, be careful of the chilli I like my food reasonably spicy but I had a mild and for some people this may ruin your dish. Keep up the good work jaidee

Best Thai food in Richmond. At last authentic Thai food !!!

Had the pad thai, pad kee mao and papaya salad. All was a no-no-no. Noodles were blend and flavouring wasn't quite right.

Relaxed, delicious authentic food. Really loved this place really relaxed and comfortable. The food is so fresh, delicious and quick. The papaya salad has a real kick to it if you ask for medium to hot. The staff are lovely and always make sure you have a full glass of water.

Sally. I went to Jaidee with two other friends last Fri, 14th Feb for dinner. I haven't had much Thai food before. We ordered three dishes, and I was really impressed. <br/>However the evening was ruin because the chair I was sitting on actually clapsed on me! I found myself sitting on the tile floor and almost too sore to get up. And I am 57kgs. <br/>Please beware of the chairs there. However the onwer did take our advice and said to check every chair on last Sat.

Wonderful food and staff. Had the nicest dinner at Jaidee Thai last night, all four meals were superb. Restaurant is clean and welcoming and the owner/chef is simply lovely. We will definitely be back.

Very fresh, clean, and delicious tasting food. As a long time papaya salad lover, the many variations on offer are most welcome. The soft shell crab had a lovely, light crispy batter and came with a beautiful salad. I can't wait to come back and try a couple of other things like the pork salad or sundried deep fried beef. To top off the meal we spoke to the cook/ owner who was super friendly and genuine. Big smiles. Do yourself a flavour.

Thanks for making us a great food!! We have 4dishes all is amazing good. Som Tum, Thai Fish Cake, Tom kaa and pad Thai! Definately will come back. Please keep the standard.

Best Thai flood in Melbourne. You goto Jaidee if u want the most authentic Thai food in Melbourne. It tastes like its straight off the streets of Bangkok.

Thai with a Laotian twist. I was in the mood for some pad Thai, but that's the wrong thing to be looking for when you're walking along Victoria Street in Richmond. (At least if you start from the Church Street end. There are several Thai places on the west side of Little Vietnam.) Jaidee Thai -- which used to be Zabvers, and still has the same decor inside -- was the first place I came across that had pad Thai on its menu. I popped in, and saw that it serves Laotian versions of familiar Thai dishes such as papaya salad. I've never had Laotian food, and I always lean toward novelty, so that's what I went for.<br/><br/>The menu warns that the Laotian flavours can be challenging -- more reliance on fish sauce taste than typical Thai. When I ordered the Laotian papaya salad, the waitress even came over and asked "Have you had this before? Do you like fish sauce?" And when I asked for it to be a bit on the hot side, she asked "Are you Australian?" You Aussies have a reputation for being unable to handle the heat, eh? After I only ordered the salad and a Thai coffee, they told me "We just grilled some chicken. It's very good. Do you want some of that?" When restaurant staff say "You should try this" I generally do. I thought it would be a satay skewer or two, but it was a whole (tiny) chicken chopped into chunks like a Chinese duck, which put my docket up to $29.10. Jaidee's door sign says "Like Thai street food" which might be true for the taste, but not the price.<br/><br/>And those Laotian flavours? Different, but good. A definite fishy vibe to the dressing on the papaya salad, but not in a pong-y way. It was a hot little ripper, to the point where I was picking red chile bits out, and I'm no sook when it comes to Scovilles. Order accordingly if you go there. The chicken tasted different to Vietnamese grilled chook, less lemon-grassy, more of a fish sauce/palm sugar/kaffir lime edge to the marinade. Nice char on the outside, but not burnt. Even the Thai coffee with sweetened condensed milk was different. Have you ever eaten a roasted coffee bean? It had that kind of taste to it, not in a bad way. This meal cost twice as much as I came in planning to spend, but I'll go the hack for something new.

Jaidee Thai’s Pad Thai looks great with its combination of chicken, fresh bean sprouts and chopped peanuts. However taste wise it falls a bit short compared to the likes of Jinda Thai’s Pad Thai and even iSpicy’s. The aroma and flavour of the sauce used isn’t as strong, and if you have ever tried Jinda Thai’s version, you’ll instantly be able to tell the difference. Over there, it’s fragrant as it arrives in front of you, with the nutty smell of the chopped peanuts. Although that is not to say Jaidee Thai’s Pad Thai isn’t good, it has its pros but with so many Thai eateries around, a dish like this needs to stand out.
