Review Yum Shanghai Dumplings - Richmond

Danny Lai
Went here for weeknight dinner, restaurant was quite empty. The restaurant itself is dimly lit and not the best presentation wise. The beef noodle was very oil and not that pleasant to eat, especially if you like your food a bit cleaner. The dumplings were very mediocre in terms of flavour and quality. The service was average and the chef spoke quite loudly, so you could here him from the dining area. Overall an ok local dumpling restaurant.

This is one of my usual places for dumplings in this area. Now under new management, cleaner and tidier. Menu hasn’t changed, quality and taste pretty much the same, still quite good. I like the pork&chive the most. Their chilli sauce is my favorite.

Our local dumpling place. Decor is basic but clean. Dumplings are very good and made in-store. Rest of the menu is pretty good as well. Normally not too busy so food comes fast and is also very well priced. Not the fanciest but good, solid dumpling place (on food-delivery apps as well)

Beautiful, vibrant customer service and the most crispy, delicious spring rolls. The dumplings are wheat based but the staff are happy to accommodate dietary needs including gluten free and vegan yummm!!

The worst dumplings I have ever had! Also missing 1 Xiao Long Boa. The restaurant won't answer the phone so I can tell them they missed something in my order...! The chicken and prawn boiled dumplings were also bad, tasted mostly like flour. The absolute worst dish was the wonton noodle soup. We were so hungry and craving noodles/dumplings but we had to chuck those dumplings out. They were so flavourless I can only imagine that they were once frozen then re heated in a plain water soup. Disgusting!!!

Decent dumplings and Chinese fare. Good service, quick and courteous. Good size chicken and sweet corn, hot sour soup. Tasty, generous vegetarian and pork boiled dumplings (12 in a serve). We will return for the next impromptu dumpling session.

If I could rate lower than one star I would. Local restaurant and craving dumplings so thought we’d support the locals and give it try for some takeaway. To say we were disgusted would be an understatement. Chilli oil provided was brown and had mould growing in it, god knows how old it was. Xiao Long Bao were all torn open both pork and vego dumplings were very ordinary. Safe to say we won’t be going back and will be reporting this place to the Health Department.

Wonderful! I ordered the fish ball soup and vegetarian dumplings through UberEats. I was so happy, everything was fresh and delicious and full of veggies. I felt content and satisfied after I ate it. I'm really excited to have found a place with great quality and such value for money. I will be a return customer for sure!

Excellent food, rubbish atmosphere. Dumplings are all fantastic. The restaurant is usually quite cold and quiet. Unfortunately the menu is about 30% more expensive on the delivery apps too which is annoying. But still the best go-to cheap chinese in the area

I went here for dinner after a very long absence and the service was really good.

Ordering a range of fried and steamed dumplings they were all fresh, hot and really tasty. Highlights included the pan fried pork, the steamed chicken and prawn was great w some solid fried rice.

Overall this was a really positive experience and definitely worth a visit.

Previous review - May 2016

I went here today with my friend for a really late lunch. We had a number of fried and boiled dumplings and a pancake.

The fried dumplings were ok, but the boiled dumplings were delicious. The pancake looked and tasted deep fried and was quite greasy but it still tasted alright lol.

The service was really friendly an welcoming, and the dumplings were quite cheap.

Got to this place to satisfy a dumpling craving during lunch at work. Nice place in victoria Street with seating for plenty. There's no big staff outside as all the work goes in the kitchen.

Got myself the pork dumplings(boiled), which was recommended by the cashier who mentioned that both are good and the pan fried has more calories. Therefore it was hard to ignore that comment ;hence the boiled. The dish took around 10-15 minutes to arrive.

The pork dumplings had a good seasoned meat portion in it, though the blanket wasn't as thin as I'd expect it to be. I was in here for the dumplings, therefore I was satisfied though I've come across better places!
Some Bunee Loves Food
Had a bun craving and ordered: steamed red bean bun, steamed egg custard bun, steamed bbq pork bun, steamed vegetarian bun, chicken bun. They were nice and hot. Traditional types and tasted good. Eased my cravings and had some left over for breakfast the next day.

This is my favourite restaurant on Victoria St. Have lived in the area 5 years and this restaurant has the best dumplings in Melbourne. It will not disappoint!! Service is great, food is fresh and delicious - thanks guys for always being consistently amazing 😊

This is by FAR our favourite dumpling place in Melbourne. We have been coming here almost every Friday for lunch for the year. The service is wonderful and the dumplings are SO good.
Made fresh everyday in the window, you can taste the fresh quality ingredients.
SO well priced for the quality. You can even take then home to cook. We love this place and it is a MUST try, if you have not already.

Love the pan fried pork dumplings here! Combine them with the tasty chilli sauce they make and there's a cheap, filling and tasty meal right there. It's a basic place but definitely worth a try if you're up for dumplings.

This is my favourite dumpling house in Melbourne. You don't go here for the service, although good, or the decor, it is basic, but the food is fantastic and cheap. You will leave with a full belly and a smile on your face.

The place was located in the Victoria street very close to North Richmond station.

The customer service was great and very friendly; unfortunately the table wasn't properly clean. We ordered Shanghai fried noodle - $10.50, fried pork dumplings and steam pork dumpling.

The Shanghai fried noodle was too sweet, too much sauce and too oily. It wasn't that great and little bit disappointed. In addition, we also noticed that the dish was served in the chipped plate which wasn't supposed to be serve for customers for safety reason. The vegetables served in the Shanghai fried noodle was well cooked.

However, the fried and stream dumpling were okay but not great. The meat inside the dumpling wasn't really generous, and the fried dumpling was too oily. It will be so much better if they were more generous in the meat and served with less oil.

Overall, we didn't have great first experience.

Dined alone so I could only order 1 item. Ordered the boiled pork dumplings. The dumplings are freshly made and you could watch the lady standing by the front window of the restaurant making the dumplings. The skin was not too thick nor thin, just to my liking. Generous amount of meat in the dumplings. Food is value for money. $9.80 for 15 pieces of boiled pork dumplings. The restaurant is clean and staff is friends. I would definitely come back to try the other items in the menu.

Definitely the best dumpling place in Richmond area! We are regular customers and always greeted with friendly staff and even more delicious food. Recommend the fried dumplings and the hot and sour soup with dumplings.
Nick Williams
Not good. Ordered via UberEats which might have contributed, but dumplings arrived cold and doughy. Spring onion pancake cold and tasteless. Food took ages to cook - over 1hr before picked up.

Pretty happy with this little gem. Took the two tin lids and the mother there for a bit of dumpling exploration. Pretty cheap and cheerful outlook as we walked in. The ladies making the dumplings in the front welcomed us in with a gorgeous smile. We had three plates of dumplings: pork dumplings in chilli oil, XLB and fried chicken and prawn dumplings. The XLB were pretty special as they were soupy and plump. The fried bad boys were as expected but the chilli ones were lacking a little bit of flavour. Well priced and quick. Get there!

Staff was very friendly and easy to approach. Dumplings were mediocre but honestly can't complain. Their soupy dumplings were amazing but very small in size. Not the best dumpling place but definitely not the worst.
Magnum
Magnum is was attracted to this restaurant because it was modern and clean (sometimes not the case on Victoria St). This is magnum's go to place on Victoria St. Cheap dumplings that are quick to order and popular with the locals.

Today I had lunch there with my dad and I have to say it was pretty great. Awesome customer service and the waitress was the kindest person ever!! I am vegetarian so I really appreciate all the options that are available. I had the mushroom and vegetable soup and it was heavenly. Good price for the serving as it was a huge bowl. Would recommend!!

Terrible food. Really disappointing experience. Ordered at 5:45pm and took 90mins to arrive despite the fact we live less than a km away. Everything arrived cold or luke warm. Dumplings were bland and thick dough. Hot and spicy soup was had a gluggy thickened texture. The vegetarian tofu and veg stir fry had random small pieces of meat in it (inedible as I don't eat meat) and the spring onion pancake was crispy, flavorless and oil soaked (and cold so disgusting). Granted they were apologetic when we rung to give feedback but still a waste of money. Didn't even want replacement dishes that were offered... That's how bad it was. Would rather go hungry.
Travelling Palate
Nice dumplings and pleasant service, the place is one of the cleaner looking establishments in Victoria St. I would return to try more dishes, but I do get annoyed at cash -only businesses.

Walked by and saw them making dumplings in the window. Wow they were delicious, half steamed half fried is the way to go. Delicious aged vinegar on the tables for the classic make-your-own-to-your-liking vinegar, soy sauce, and chili oil dipping sauce. The latter is house made chili oil and you can also buy it to go, take it home and put it on everything. Well done and great family!

Pleasant and friendly service, great value for money, really enjoyed the flavours and variety. The soup/dumpling combo was a filling dinner for under $10 - will return soon!
FOOD TRIP
Shanghai style cuisine of delicious quality at super affordable prices. Exceptional value. Service is friendly and fast. Their home made chilli sauce is definitely a highlight. Highly recommend. Pan Fried Pork Dumpling (15 pcs) $9. Crispy just as they are expected to be. Filling has good flavour and even a bit of juicy soup inside. Great value. 7.5/10

Incredibly attentive service. Delicious boiled dumplings (we had the chicken and prawn ones) as well as the chilli oil wontons. The Shanghai soy sauce duck was brilliant and only $13. Will definitely be back

A favourite with Abbotsford locals and many hospitality staff around town. The owner is incredibly friendly and always stops to say hi and ask what you have been up to. Often you can see dumplings being made by hand in the front window, and everything is always very fresh and delicious!

Tried this for a change - we usually head for the various Korean places that have recently opened on Victoria St along with a couple of the well-tested Vietnamese places.

We're assuming that the place had recently been renovated as there was a three-quarters-finished feel to the place. It was surprisingly cold and the front kitchen not being used. But the cold temp more than made up for by the very warm welcome.

We were there for a quick dinner - the boiled pork dumplings were superb, the crispy duck tasty (if a little on the crispy side) and pork/ginger interesting (liked it but large portion). With steamed rice, less than $40 for 2 people and too much food - that would have easily fed 3.

Menu extensive so certainly will be back to try out.

Yum doesn't even begin to describe the quality of dumplings at this Victorian street haunt. Not only are the dumplings amazing, but the service is impeccable. If you haven't made the time for the quality of this establishment you should most definitely do so.

Service: 5 Star service provided by the waitress/owner of this shop, not only she makes you feel you're right at home, she gives off this warm gentle feeling to everyone she meets. I can tell that she is really someone that puts the customer above herself, a very good staff!

Food: Although the variety of food is still quite limiting, I throughly enjoy their top dishes. (Dumplings, Fried Pork Pieces, Fried Noodles and Small Chilli Beef with Rice)

Atmosphere: It's actually very well renovated, I like the way space is used. For a place to eat out cheap, I don't expect anything more than this.

Conclusion: Eat here whenever you don't know what to eat, you won't regret it.

Delicious dumplings, very reasonable pricing, and service is amazing. Really friendly staff that don't treat you badly like many other dumpling places do. Can't wait to come back.

The dumplings were absolutely delicious, incredibly fresh!

The staff were so friendly and delightful to deal with. I think I have a new favourite dumpling place!

Yum! Delicious dumplings and great value! We came here as a group of 8 for Friday lunch. Ordered a number of steamed and fried dumplings dishes, green beans, BBQ pork buns and xiaolongbao. All were fantastic and service was very prompt and friendly.

G'day all. First time time reviewer, long time subscriber. The dumplings are sublime but the main attraction is the overly bubbly lady running the register. She's just fantastic. A little bundle of joy. Whether your eating in or swinging through with a bigger agenda, this lady leaves you with a smile on the dile.

Biggups to to yum Shanghai

We had some Shanghai pork mini steam bun (or xiao long bao), pan fried beef dumplings, pan fried chicken and frawn dumplings. To finish it, a portion of fried man tou with condensed milk (nothing special, dont order!!)
A nice place for some dumplings if you dont wanna go to the city or you just not feeling like Pho.
Cheap eat, and THE BEST STAFF i have evet seen :)

My new favourite dumpling joint this side of townWe had the fried pork dumplings, the boiled chicken and prawn, some spring onion pancake and chinese broccoli- everything was delicious and great value. The best part of this place is the service- there was one lady working taking orders and waiting tables, and she was honestly the nicest server I have ever had at any restaurant. Go give it a try, you wont be disappointed.

Great service, staff were the best thing. Dumplings also quality, similar to Shanghai in china town but better. Victoria street desperately needed a dumpling house and it has found it in Yum Shanghai.

We were greeted by a friendly and welcoming young lady who was so hospitable, we felt we'd been invited into her own home.
The dumplings are handmade onsite and are a taste sensation. Highlights were the boiled pork dumplings and the fried chicken and prawn dumplings, the outer shell fried to crispy-tasty perfection.
Dumplings are a welcome addition to Vic St, and we will definitely be back for more.
