Review Benny Burger - Richmond

TinManFromAus
I’ve been meaning to come to Benny Burger, as I was interested to see what Chef Shannon Bennett’s foray into fast food would look like. Luckily for me, I got an invite to try the menu. At Sunday lunch time there were a lot of families in here, I suspect it was for a pre-football meal. There are a couple of large TVs inside with the footy playing if you didn’t have tickets. The interior is clean, it almost has a modern café feel. There's a photo booth which my friend and I took advantage of, and one of the booths has an arcade game for the kids. Benny’s schtick is it’s an ethical burger, made from locally sourced ingredients. For that alone, you have to give credit to those who spread the awareness of local produce. We got two burgers, the sausage roll burger and the Chang. Both burgers were pretty good. I was impressed by the sausage roll burger, I have never seen anything like it before. It was a great fusion. The potato cake was pretty tasty, I’m not sure about the $2.50 price tag, but I wouldn’t have more than 1. You can definitely tell it wasn’t a factory made potato cake! We got the firecracker loaded fries. Not for the faint hearted. I actually preferred the chips. In this arguably saturated burger market in Melbourne, you gotta stand out. Whether it’s aesthetics, or taste. Aesthetically, it’s not an ‘instagram’ burger – which is perfectly fine! Taste wise, it’s above average. I do like the message, and the aesthetic. Sure there is better, but I would return here, because I think it has potential to grow and find its niche. Take away the Shannon Bennett bias, and you are in a burger joint which sources its ingredients locally, makes its own cheese and buns, and is ethically produced.

Popped in here for an early dinner. It was really quiet but I don’t mind that. The cutout is really cool, from the little tv screens in the booths to the table arcade games and the funky little photo booth at the back. The burger I ordered was brought out pretty quickly and was pretty juicy, maybe cooked a little more than what I prefer but still top notch. The chips were very yummy too. Will definitely return

Had the Chang... It was ok nothing much to get overly excited about. Stock standard burger that is forgettable. It’s good but is it worth a return visit? Personally dice hungry jacks has picked up their game on the double patty cheese burger w/bacon!!! I’d go back to hungry jacks.. the let down here was the sugar drink. Bit tight on the syrup mix!!

Great burgers, awesome branding. Overall great experience. Only improvement would be to have the burger patties a little less cooked as they were 10-15% overdone. Will definitely come back.

Shannon Bennett's burger joint lives up to its name for atmosphere. The mystery loaded fries were surprisingly good, we didn't take a chance on the mystery burger though. Burgers were tasty with buns perfectly toasted. Flavour doesn't quite match the best burger joints in the area but nice enough for a 2nd visit to sample other flavours

Rather than just say "this is the best", I figured I'd share some quotes from when we were walking out. "This is exactly the vibe we want a burger joint to have " "I feel like we're in an 80's diner." "I feel happy knowing I can get an organic burger." We really enjoyed our time here, the meal was great, the ambiance was great, they accommodated my special requests with grace. The only complaint was that the arcade game in the middle of the table made for a bit of an antisocial meal, but I suspect that's more on me than on the restaurant.

Not the juiciest burger, but very tasty nonetheless. Meat patty was perfectly cooked medium-rare. Would be happy to come back knowing the quality of all the ingredients

Got uberEats from here and normally uberEats isn't great for burgers, but this was different. Probs has to do with benny packaging too. The Chang was awesome! As was the vietnamese slaw. Would do it again

I'm not that big a fan of burgers but did find these good. They are so good, that you tend to lose some of the toppings because of how much is in them. Quite a nice place to dine and kids didn't mind it either. Beer on tap was good. Service was great and the staff were extremely helpful. Generally, the menu is pretty good and portion sizes generous. Kids welcome. Food for those with dietaries is easily catered for. Wheelchair and disability friendly. Parking isn't too bad, just watch those signs as the inspectors are pretty quick here.

Rank this place my #1 burger in Melbourne. Inferno burger is the bomb. Great chips always cooked to perfection only tiny flaw is I have to buy 2 burgers because they are a tad small

You’re superior and pushy attitude last night ruined my cheat meal... talking down to my partner and I whilst ordering. Apologies I asked for a Coke Zero instead of kombucha. Not to mention guilting is to eat on the bench in the street because you were 18minutes from closing.

Thanks but no thanks.
Thought For Food
Went in during the christmas holidays with my husband who has been wanting to try this place for a while (he's a big shannon bennett fan!).

He ordered the inferno burger and cheese fries while I ordered the chickpea and eggplant salad with fish. Hubby loved the burger however the fries were oversalted and the cheese sauce was hard to eat (also very salty). This would be forgivable if they weren't charging almost $10 a serve for it.
The salad I ordered was very average. It had about 3 small pieces of eggplant and was very watery at the bottom too which I found off putting when it mixed with the yoghurt topping. The fish that came with the salad was nice, but was also about 4 small pieces. Paying almost $16 for what was pretty much a bowl of chickpeas really didnt leave me with the best impression.

We were also charged 15% due to it being a public holiday so the meal came to almost $60, which is way too steep for a quick burger meal. Decor is pleasant and the arcade games are a nice touch though. Maybe just stick to what they do best (the burgers).

Given the initial reviews of this place I have taken my time ordering from here. Looking at more recent reviews I expected that it moved on from the teething issues - and I could not be more wrong.

Ordered through Ubereats, and although delivered close to on time the order consisted of a small box of cold onion rings (2/5), an overcooked and very fishy smelling and tasting fish burger (1/5), an overcooked and dry chang burger (2/5), a bowl of chickpeas with very little else in the way of 'salad" with a not-offensive beetroot burger (2/5), but also our order had missing items. The best bit of the order was the packaging - but unfortunately that tasted like cardboard, which in this case was better than the fish burger.

Maybe we just had an unlucky order, but I would not order from Benny Burger again, and I'm very surprised that the reviews have largely been largely positive of late.

A topic pick for a burger joint in the heart of Richmond.
With lovely welcoming interior and the lure of a veggie burger I felt compelled to enter.
Opting for the Yoga Burger as it was the only vegetarian option available I subbed out the cheese and mayo for some ketchup and mustard to crest some vegan goodness. The staff were very accommodating to dietary requirements with no hassles. Thoroughly enjoyed the flavour combination of the cabbage and beetroot relish with some good tasting chips.
Hoping there will be a vegan option available soon otherwise it hit the spot well.
Benny Burgers was one of the best burger joints in Melbourne. I tried their spicy chicken “The Inferno” burger and it was super delicious; the chicken patty was crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, and it had the right level of spiciness. That, paired with loaded “Firecracker” fries made the best burger meal.

BEST BURGERS IN MELBOURNE! Went in with freinds - we had a vegetarian with us and she was easily catered for. Mr Burns is out of this world... and those potato cakes. Oh. My. Word. SO YUM!

4.0
I was invited to try out Benny burgers. Organically sourced, there is a wide range of burgers to choose from.

Staff are very informative and interactive.

Modern retro burger joint with diner style seating.

The wagyu patties are minced and made by hand daily.

We ordered the chocolate kahlua shake which was rich and well blended.

Mr fun-gi is compact and flavoursome. The pickles overpower the burger though but the mushroom and crispy onion rings compliments the zestiness.

The Luis sausage roll burger is unique with a puff pastry bun and waygu beef.

Cheese loaded fries are gooey and the chips are lightly salted.

The hand dipped potato cake is double battered with one layer using their beer. A must try.

Good burgers with plenty of flavour and great buns that aren’t too sugar based. The chips are great . Unfortunately won’t reorder a meal from here due to the most pretentious and wasteful packaging I’ve ever seen, get with the times.

I have previously dined at their new Little Collins Street branch and have recently received an invite to their Richmond store (original). We rocked up for an early dinner and managed to snag one of their tables fitted out with some retro games! Definitely arrive early or on an off-day so you and your mates can take advantage of the gaming booths. Venue is also spacious with a mural of Benny Bennett, if you ask me I thought it looked a bit ghastly. Unlike the mural where he is on the barbie flame grilling his meats the beef patties are not flame grilled but rather cooked on a flat top, an observation not a critique.

We ordered up, unfortunately for me the desserts were not available due to sourcing issues on the back end. I guess I was not destined to taste their dessert range so I got a salted caramel shake instead which was nice and thick, not overly sweet.

I also enquired about their "fries of the month" which unfortunately had run out (not sure when). The ones they had in the past looked pretty darn good so it was a shame they didn't have any, they need to get their supplies in check! Not just for me but for all the diners who come in with expectations. As our options shrunk we opted for the firecracker fries as I knew they were pretty damn tasty. So that's three thumbs up for the fries so far, firey with that dash of jalapeno sauce.

We also got a couple of potato cakes, greasy potato disks that I'm finding hard to dislike. Everyone loves a potato cake and these were a step up from your local fish and chippery, perfect golden batter with soft potato on the inside makes the perfect addition to your burger (in or out).

Burgers, I wanted to keep it simple and got the Mr Burns. Then I started adding a few things such as cheese, bacon and onion rings. The onion rings were more like deep fried onions and how come they don't have onion rings as a side on the menu? I've had the same thoughts (previous visit) in regards to the buns and patty, I wish the beef was more medium/medium rare and treated more like a steak and as a result a juicier burger. The burger bun I hoped was more soft but as a bonus holds the burger intact. My friend had The Chang and his burger was dripping purple from the beetroot relish, although watery the buns didn't sog up that much and held everything together. Burgers were alright for me.

All in all a better second time visit, a more welcoming/fun venue with good food. Slight hiccups back of house which resulted in certain items being unavailable, some of which can be avoided and some of which can't. Hopefully one day I can get my hands around some of these elusive items! Thanks for having me.

Unfortunately not so great. Have been here a number of times and every time there is always something wrong. Incorrect order or food has come to our table cold. The burger has a nice taste to it but perhaps on the small side.

I was fortunate enough to visit Benny Burgers tonight by invitation. I really like this ethical, locally sourced food and ingredients concept. Let’s support our local farmers and reduce food miles.

This restaurant is different to the Collins Street one and my partner and I sit in a booth with some old school arcade games haha. I played a couple of games which was fun.

I started w a chocolate milkshake which was big, tasty and full of chocolate... yum.

We had great service from the staff, and we ordered a potato cake, a chicken burger, a sausage roll burger, and some loaded fries w beef brisket.

Highlights for me included the sausage roll burger which was incredible, it literally tasted like a sausage roll with the similar pastry used instead of a bun. Gosh yummo hahaha

The chicken burger was fresh and tasty but the loaded fries were delicious, especially with the beef brisket. Mmnn yum! And gluten free buns don’t cost extra!!

This restaurant is famous for its desserts so we shared a chocolate brownie sundae as it was highly recommended. Wow, this is definitely a chocolate lovers dessert!! Although it was well balanced w some vanilla ice cream and some cream. Phew... yes we rolled out of there hahaha

Benny burger at Richmond. It is run by the famous Vue group and burger is designed by the Chef Shannon Bennett. Every thing is organic and ethically served with healthy organic ingredients. I love the Benny Bennett image on the wall with funky design. We ordered the inferno spicy beef burger, the Chang and no apology double beefy burger. The waygu beef is so succulent and juicy tender. All the ingredients are fresh and well presented. Also we like the organic diary sundae and milkshake. Highly recommended for a healthy burger bite.
Good Food Good Mood
I was lucky enough to be invited to Benny Burger last night which was so conveniently located about a two minute walk from my hairdresser. Shannon Bennett is obviously one of the rockstars of the Australian food scene so I was quite excited to try his burger store. This more casual venture makes his food more accessible but maintains all of his strict standards around ingredient quality.
We enjoyed an organic sundae, house made buns (gf no extra charge!), additive and chemical free fries, award winning house made cheese as well as freshly minced burger patties which are formed daily. It offers sustainable and ethical fast food which was a real gap in the market. More than that the atmosphere is just effortlessly cool. The Apple tvs in the booths allow you to wirelessly connect your phone to the screen and watch whatever you like (failing that there were big screens playing the tennis).
I loved the menu layout too which playfully names a burger after David Chang a celebrity chef who famously said ‘Australians have no idea what a burger is’. I didn’t order the Chang this time, instead I went for the cluck off (option to grill or dry, fry obviously) swapping the bacon for avocado. This was a fabulous idea (sorry Shannon) as the avo was fresh and plentiful and went well with the firecracker mayo. I don’t usually like too much spice but washed down with a salted caramel shake it was delicious.
My partner had the Mr Burns which I got to try and delight in it’s Benny sauce.
A potato cake and a side of cheese fries completed the meal. The potato cake was super lush and you could really tell the difference with the fries when they are as proclaimed simply potato, oil and salt. It’s good to know exactly what you are eating even when you treat yourself. Finishing up with the brownie sundae was a novel experience. It’s hard to imagine even our desserts are organic now (I’m not talking about that raw ball crap this is a legitimate sundae). Taste was not at all compromised here and in fact the brownie was one of the better ones I’ve eaten. Oh and did I mention there’s even a photo booth?!

What an fantastic burger place. This place is a must before the footy! I got ‘The Inferno’ and the ‘Firecracker Fries’. The homemade lemonade was really nice too, a welcoming change from the commercialised carbonated drinks. Highly recommend.

Hip burger joint with a retro pacman arcade as a table, its own photo booth, and a large screen showing sports. We got the Inferno and as the name suggests, it’s pretty spicy and if you can handle it, we highly recommend it! The beef patty comes with spicy mayo, jalapeños, fresh red chillies, and is delightful. We also had the Chang which has a sunny side egg which bursts as you take the first bite and feels satisfying. The bun is crisp and the veggies tastes fresh. Overall we enjoyed our experience tonight!
Hello. Imnikki
4.5
It's hard to stand out amongst the many burger joints in Melbourne, but Benny Burger is doing an awesome job with their ethical burgers. The menu lists out all their suppliers and it is good to know that all the ingredients used are organic, sustainable and ethically sourced.

The quality of the ingredients, and not to mention the skilled execution, was evident when we took our first bite of the burgers. The bun was soft and fluffy, the beef patty was juicy, and the fried chicken was incredibly succulent. All the supporting ingredients from the sauce to the pickled onions to the fresh tomatoes and lettuce played a part to create a flavourful burger.

Also excellent was the loaded fries. The fresh chillies and tender chunks of beef briskets scattered on top of the gooey cheese resulted in an explosion of flavours - spicy, savoury, and meaty, combined with the dairy sweetness of the cheese. Despite being buried underneath so many goodies, the fries stayed crunchy till the end.

We rounded off our meal with two milkshakes, and what creamy and thick milkshakes they were. It did somewhat ease my disappointment over the fact that they didn't had sundaes that night. Made using organic soft serve, my partner actually commented that it tasted "healthy-ish". *looks confused

It wasn't just the food that wowed us, the service and the vibe were outstanding too. The staffs were welcoming and approachable, and the food arrived in a timely manner. The table with integrated arcade games, the big telly screening footy and the photo booth all contributed to a fun dining experience. Thank you for the invite Benny Burger!
Dine And Dash
Benny Burger is from the stables of Shannon Bennett from Vu de Monde (and MasterChef) and is located in Little Collins St (closed on Sundays) and in Swan St, Richmond. They are also available on Uber Eats. I went to the Richmond location which is conveniently close to public transport, open every day and till 11pm on Friday and Saturday nights. A great place to go before and after the footy!! As the name suggests (named after Shannon’s Dad, Benny) they specialise in Burgers. That’s a bit of an understatement – these are not just burgers but truly delicious, amazing burgers!

Tonight, I came with a friend for dinner around 7:30pm. On arrival, we were greeted by an extremely friendly staff member who told us that we were able to sit anywhere we liked. We chose to sit at one of the tables that had a gaming machine between the seats! How clever and nifty! The venue itself was really cool with TV screens, an open kitchen and a photo booth!

For drinks, we ordered the Chocolate Shake and an Original Kombucha. To eat, we chose the Fish Burger and The Inferno burger. But boy was it hard to choose – they all look so great and come with amusing titles! The light and fresh Fish burger is a Barramundi and Ling patty with lettuce, pickled onions, capers and a tartare sauce. The Inferno burger is a succulent Wagyu beef patty, pickled jalapeños, onion, chilli, avocado, tomato and their special firecracker mayo. It was delicious and although spicy it didn’t blow your head off! For sides, we ordered the firecracker fries (which came with the same sauce as The Inferno), and the Hand-dipped Potato Cakes. Lastly, for dessert, we ordered the Chocolate Brownie Sundae. Unfortunately, the Doughnut Ice cream sandwiches weren’t available.

The drinks were great. I liked the Chocolate Shake - it was sweet but not too sweet and the cream was pouring off the sides - delightful! The burgers were scrumptious, incredibly tasty and satisfying! The Inferno was packed with flavour, drizzling in firecracker sauce. The Fish Burger was a nice light healthy choice and was a great tasting burger.

I absolutely loved the potato cakes - I honestly think they are the best potato cakes I’ve ever had. They are just how they should be – full of fluffy soft potato and so very crunchy and crispy on the outside. I’d come here just to have the potato cakes!! The firecracker chips were also great – nice and spicy! You can get regular salted chips and cheesy ones too. The sundae was a great way to end the meal. It came with a chocolate soft serve, chocolate syrup, chocolate brownie and a crème anglaise. So simple but just a delectable dessert.

Prices are reasonable with the burgers averaging around $15 and customer service was on point. They offer a loyalty card which accrues points – eg: spend $10 and get a Benny buck on your card. Plus you get news, special offers and deals for members from Benny and the whole Vue Group. They cater for kids with their munchkin burger and gluten-free buns are available too.

I totally enjoyed my experience at Benny Burger and will most definitely be back soon. I unquestionably recommend you give Benny Burger a try – you’ll love it too, without a doubt.

Benny Burger “The Ethical Burger” owned by Shannon Bennet, Vue De Monde’s chef located in the busy Swan Street, Richmond. The idea of having his own burger shop coming from the Shannon’s favourite memories growing. up was the weekend ritual of his Dad, Benny Bennett, throwing burgers on the barbie.
Oj_always_eating
We were invited to visit Benny Burger on Saturday night and it was absolutely JAMMING!!! Soooo busy with the pre-footy rush, but it contributed to a great atmosphere with the big tvs showing replays of the grand final!

We ordered “The Chang” and the “Mr Burns” +bacon +cheese. Both were SO GOOD...extremely succulent and juicy. The Chang had the most delicious beetroot relish, and a beautifully cooked egg, where the yolk was perfectly runny! The Mr Burns was more of a classic burger - and the bacon took it up to another level. The patties were on the rarer side, so if you don’t like this I suggest you mention so when you make your order!

We also had the “Loaded fries of the month”, which featured beef brisket and chilli - WOW they packed a punch and were amazing. And lastly, you’d never expect it, but the “Potato Cake” was honestly the best one I’ve ever had in my life - the BEST seasoning and so crunchy on the outside and fluffy on the inside!!!

The sustainable and ethical ethos behind Benny Burger is great, it adds an extra element that differentiates it from other burger joints. I love the idea that ingredients are locally sourced wherever possible. Every ingredient is spot on and terrific!! Highly recommend a visit here.

Benny Burgers is a must visit if you’re in the neighbourhood. The menu here is extensive and there are burgers and sides here to cater for everyone.

The footy playing on the big screen and video game tables, how cool is that! We did play Pac-Man while we waited for our food, very nostalgic.

Our burgers and the loaded fried were great, the patties and buns really good. We also had a potato cake each which we tried, it was quite oily (more than your standard) so we were unable to finish it. It did bring back memories though as I used to love eating potato cakes after school as a kid 😊 for dessert we shared the chocolate brownie sundae , the ice cream was divine and as you ate further down the bottom you’d hit jackpot with little pieces of brownie.

I’d like to thank Benny Burger for the invite, the service was fantastic.

Sorry guys, 3 tries to get a simple order right, and the order was finally slapped down on the table without even a plate to eat it off. Complete chaos. The flavour wasn’t great once it arrived. Won’t bother again.

There is an inferno in my mouth and I am pretty damn happy about it! Spicy chicken burger was absolutely perfect complete with a delicious side of salted fries. Post burger I also had one of Benny's shakes and it was the perfect end to a great dining experience. A must!

I find it hard to find a food burger so giving out a five is rate. I rate benny burger 5 out of 5! The burger is perfect in its bun, patty, sauce and filling. So much care was taken in every element of delivering the burger. The sides especially the chips were bang on. Taken the spot for my favourite burger place in melbourne. The addition of the games and quirky things a win.
Jianierrrrrr
I would rate 3.5 for the burger and extra 0.5 for the sides.
Owned by VUE Group, Benny Burger was specialised in sustainable, ethical and organic burgers. The place was pretty causal with beers on tap, sport program playing on screen, graffiti walls, a photo booth and some arcade game table that you can play with. The service was quick and staff were very friendly.

I liked the newspaper style menu so you can actually read and know more about the burger you gonna eat and fun story behind it. From beef to egg, cheese, they were carefully selected from local farmers. And all the beef patties are made of 100% Blackmore wagyu beef!

#Mr Fun-Gi#-wagyu beef, cheddar, crispy onion ring and sautéed mushroom. Beef patty was lovely grilled and had real beef taste, however, it was not as juicy as I expected. The crispy onion was a brilliant idea which added crunchiness and sweetness into the burger.

#Cluck off#-free range chicken fillet, bacon, cheddar, lettuce and mayo. Even though the chicken meat was burnt around the edge, the inside of the chicken patty was still juicy (not around the edge) . Meat itself was marinated well, got nice flavours. I especially liked the firecracker mayo which added a nice kick and made the burger juicier.

#load of fries#-fries topped with melted cheese and beef brisket. That was a really loaded bowl of fries! Sinfully guilty but tasted very good! The beef brisket was cooked perfectly and extremely tender with hint of sweetness. We enjoyed it very much! Also the #potato cake# is a must! It was so good that you just wanted to munch on it! The extra crispy batter wrapped around creamy and soft potato slice, every bite was enjoyable.

If you are around Benny Burger, just give a go. In the end, no one would say no to a descent burger and the enjoyment it brings.

We were originally sceptical about heading to Benny on the weekend as there have been some recent negative reviews posted. But being pretty keen to try the organic burgers Benny offers we decided to give it a try and we were not disappointed.Food was excellent and the staff were happy and helpful, would definitely recommend and we will definitely be back to sample more of the menu.

A Terrible burger. Had the double cheese burger. A greasy burger isnt normally a bad thing, yet this greasy monstrosity was tasteless, like the salt was left out of the patties, speaking of which were cooked medium rare! Id go to a French restaurant if I want meat Tartare.
If you are on Swan avoid this and go to 1090 or Beer and Burger bar which a a short walk away.
Ethical, sustainable and delicious. This relatively new burger chain restaurant from Shannon Bennett cares as much about the environment and the quality of its produce as it does about satisfying Melbourne foodies and burger lovers.

The contemporary space of their Richmond location is cool and casual, with wines by the glass, spiked milkshakes and beers on tap (watch how they fill up the beers, it's pretty futuristic). Burgers are the main event here, with options to suit all tastes, whether you love beef, chicken, fish, spicy or are vegetarian. The Mr Fun-Gi was a loaded combination of beef, mushrooms, cheese and onions, with some salad to lighten things up, all delivering a good balance of flavour. The Chang was also enjoyed by my friend. The portion sizes of the burgers are pretty perfect, enabling you to hold it in one hand, yet filled with sufficient ingredients.

Their sides should be given a go, especially their loaded fries of the month (loaded with beef brisket on our visit), and their house made potato cakes are some of the best in Melbourne! A worthy burger joint competitor on this side of town.

Original review: My burger was less than average, and had to share a table with people we didn’t know due to the oversized booths and limited smaller tables. The only upsides were the potato cakes and milkshakes.

Updated review: I decided to give the Benny Burger team another go - ordered a burger and chips via Uber Eats. Opened up my order, and I’d been given the wrong burger. Ate it anyway, and it was annoyingly delicious.

Was recommended Benny by a friend at work and can tell you there is a group of us that will be coming back! Sausage roll burger, take it from me its the ducks, treat yourself!

My work colleagues and I all got the Vietnamese burgers for lunch last Friday, we're obsessed with them! We want to try other burgers there, but we can't not get that one haha.. give it a go - trust me!
Man Needs Burger
Saturday night at Benny Burger and was not disappointed! Burgers were fantastic and we settled in for a few beers post dinner, the Benny Brew really hit the spot. Get on the hand dipped potato cakes! Will be back to try more of the menu, had the Apprentice but there are so many good options to choose from.
@twogoodtoresist
Benny burger is all organic and sustainable, all as well as 100% preservative free and ethical. But what’s most amazing, is with all of this taken into account, the burgers are soooo unbelievably delicious. The places itself is also
only walking distance from richmond station so there’s really no excuse not to visit! We ordered The Inferno burger ; wagyu beef, local cheddar, fried pickled jalapeños, pickled onion, red chilli, avocado, tomato, firecracker mayo & The Chang burger ; 150 wagyu beef, fried egg, local cheddar, lettuce, tomato, pickled onion, pickles, beetroot relish, benny sauce with a side of beer batted potatoe cakes and their loaded fries of the day which came with bbq smoked brisket, cheese, chilli, onion. We’re already planning our next visit!
Food Comatose
The staff are lovely and the vibe is casual. I appreciate that they don’t charge extra for gluten free buns and offer organic sodas. We went on a Friday night so it was super busy and understandably, there was a long wait. Unfortunately, the burgers were cold and not very tasty. My beef patty was hard and a bit burnt.
Brillat_Savarin
Found the service here to be prompt and very attentive with a positive attitude, top marks. Food was great - burger patty’s cooked medium which is the proper way to do it IMHO. Potato cakes, yum! Chips ok but could’ve been more crispy. One criticism is that the lighting in this place is like a 7/11 convenience store at 5am after a night on the disco biscuits. Dimmers people!! Overall I’d go back for the burgers, and probably get takeaway.

Tried Benny over the weekend while roaming Richmond enjoying some refreshments with some mates. Really enjoyed the Tradie burger and the loaded fries were outstanding! Will be back again to sample some more of the menu.

As they say everyone deserves a second chance so I came back to Benny’s after last visiting during their opening week. And things have honestly improved quite drastically so I had to update my review.

The food: my mate and I ordered the Chang as well as the inferno as well as the fries of the month which were loaded with a beautiful shredded beef brisket. But let’s jump straight to the heroes - the burgers. And it seems not just had Benny’s grown almost a year older but also the burgers in their size. So much so that I was almost full after finishing the inferno. The inferno comes with a spicy mayo that luckily isn’t too heavy or too spicy. It carries a well balanced level of spice that complements the avocado, onions and cheese quite well. A highlight as always for me were the jalapeños. It was so tasty that I didn’t even let my mate try but well he loved his Chang so much anyway he wouldn’t have let me have a bite anyway.

The service: while last time this was this biggest downfall with massive wait times, this time it was speedy and super friendly. The prices were justified for the quality of the product and its size.

Overall, a great experience for a mates night out. Thanks for inviting me back in for a better experience! Will be back soon 😊

Have to disagree with some of the reviews here, had a really good experience at Benny Burger. Ordered the My Burns with bacon and cheese and it was delicious! Staff were great and we did not have to wait long for our meals, will definitely be back for more.

In Benny Burger, Shannon Bennett has created a range of burgers that hero Australian produce, are 100% organic, sustainable, ethical, and (of course) absolutely delicious.
Karras Fabricius
Sorry to say but the burger was undercooked and made all 10 of us feel very unwell, if you’re going to get a burger expect it a rare burger, will not come again
Alisino
Ordered takeaway - The Chang and The Inferno. Friendly service by staff, recommending different burger options. Quick service. Burgers are decent and reasonably priced. The Chang had a good combination of flavours. The Inferno wasn't as spicy as expected.
Sethmini Tilakaratne
All the ingredients in the salad and burgers were fresh! The staff were lovely and the tables have arcade games built in to them so you can play while you wait for your food 😊
Lucy Annalisse
I can't comment on the burgers as I was here just for dessert. We ordered the chocolate brownie sundae to share and it was delicious but difficult to eat. Lovely staff and a cute venue.

I can put aside the average tasting burgers and subpar service. But don't promote yourself as ethical and sustainable when you serve water in disposable cups. Even after asking for glasses, we were told they were only for beer/alcohol.
The Burgers are heavy, greasy and small for the steep price. I've been twice now, the second time to see if it had improved, but I won't be back again. Both times I've left feeling nasty in the stomach...not nice.

I ordered the Vietnamese Burger. Didn't have a big problem with the service (as a lot of people on the reviews did), though mine did come out about 5 minutes after everyone else's on my table. What I had a problem with was my patty - completely undercooked! It was a serious shade of reddish-pink on the inside that I unfortunately didn't notice until I was about halfway through it. It wasn't completely raw, but everyone else on my table had lovely cooked patties that were noticeably more brown than mine. Thankfully, I somehow didn't get sick but I won't ever be back.

Seems to be a pretty consistent theme here, but I had the same issue as many people. The service was simply terrible. 45 minute wait for a burger, people came after me got served first. Poor bloke ahead of me suffered the same deal. The burger was fine, certainly no better or worse than other similar gourmet places you see in Melbourne. Traded on Shannon Bennett's name. I won't be back.

There are two things that annoy me...
Being promised that a meal will be served up in 20 min (in an empty restaurant), but it still hasn’t come after 40 min....and secondly, a table of 6-8 people order 15-20 min after me, and they are all munching on burgers while I’m getting my refund. The star is for the lovely girl on the register, but other than that I can’t rate. Too much competition in the burger industry for this ‘meh’ attitude

Delicious! Cheesy Burns Burger was epic and the loaded fries were heaven! Staff were super friendly and gave great advice on the menu. Can't wait for the next BB to open in the cbd nearer to my work!
Leonie Simmonds
Upon entering the store was greeted by friendly staff, questioned if the burgers where spicy and advised that i was unable to tolerate pepper, staff member advised the burger were not spicy. Perhaps this was just a one off, but the level of training must not be high as the burgers were spicy and they advised not, maybe they should have a star rating from 1 - 10 on level of spice in food . Beyond that though it appeared to be a quality patty (good pinkish hues) and well crafted burger.

Absolutely terrible! We had Benny burger home delivered and it was awful. The chips tasted like frozen fries and the salad was an absolute rip off at $8 with a minuscule serving size. I’ll take my hard earned money elsewhere.

Yum, loved benny burger!! The fried chicken burger was delicious, the loaded fries were also a great hit - will definitely be back for more!

If you've been on the hunt for a great vegetarian burger (a hard thing to master) then check out Benny Burger! I'll definitely be coming back for more!
Ashleigh Drinkwater
Had a fantastic burger from Benny Burger! I absolutely loved the Cluck Off Burger, with grilled chicken. Will definitely be back for more very soon!
Alex Langridge
The lamb burger I had was fantastic - cooked just right, tender and with great flavour! I'm normally not really into meaty burgers but this one had me licking my fingers at the end - A+ will be back to try more of the menu
The Dear Luncher
Once you get past the unnecessary levels of foliage (aka lettuce) in the Cheesy Burns burger, you'll actually find yourself a decent burger. Perhaps this was just a one off, but the overt levels of lettuce in this meat contraption was annoying. Beyond that though it was a quality patty (good pinkish hues) and well crafted burger.

To accompany this thing, a $2 hand dipped potato cake and a $6 Coburg Lager. This old school potato cake idea has potential, but it was over fried. There is a sweet spot to be found with this type of thing. Where the exterior is crisp, but not too crisp. And the interior is soft and fluffy. Benny Burger still have to work on finding that sweet spot. The Coburg Lager was solid for the price, The Dear Luncher smashed down two cups of this.

The venue is set up superbly however. Big booths, arcade games tables and big screens.
Geraldine
Love these burgers. Had the Cheesy Burns, loaded fries and strawberry shake. Flavours are delicious and the best burger I've ever had. Knowing that the produce is top quality and from ethical sources is a real plus for me. Will be back for sure.
Louise
Great place for a Burger! Tasted so fresh and everything is ethically sourced. They make their own buns and cheese, how cool is that?
Arcade games and apple TV's perfect for kids (and adults). Would be a great place for a kids birthday. Food came out quick and then as very tasty 😋 chips are great and actually taste like potato-what a change from the usual chips you get in fast food places. Good selection of booze too-negroni anyone?
Julie Faoro
Very disappointing visit! The chips were tasteless and the munchin was too small! Not great for a family night out. We won't be back .. we will go back up the road to grilled
Denny Patron
The early reviews here were terrible, and probably unwarranted, as are reviews saying it's one of the best burgers going around, it's not.

It's an ok burger, enjoyable but not memorable. Patty was tasty but a bit dry, bun a bit dry as well. Fries with cheese were pretty good.

However I found it unorganized! They don't take phone orders, so when I got there I had to wait 20mins after I ordered, why not just take phone orders? I was told due to low numbers Of burgers left I could only order 1 burger per person? What is this school? And then after all that I got the wrong burger (lucky it was a double burger so bigger but didn't have the bacon on it I wanted)

UPDATED Dec18- went back again and was disappointed, the burger just lacks flavor, the patty again is dry and not much flavor.

2.5/5

Benny's is a big shame.

The Marks Burger is pretty decent, the food overall is actually pretty great.

But then you interact with the inattentive team members, sit at the tables that are never clean, look around the store which is always a mess, and none of it gels with what was meant to be a cool fitout.

It looks like a restaurant where the owner built it and forgot about it. It's a big shame. Good on half price Mondays, when I can put up with eating in squaller - but even then, bring a chux with you.
Jack
I've been sitting here for 45 minutes and my burger still hasn't come. I'm starving. This is ridiculous. It's not even busy. Get your stuff together.

I can remember coming down Richmond way on the opening weekend for Benny’s and reading someone else’s review and deciding against giving them a go. Given time had gone by I thought I would pop in and try for myself. I arrived just after the lunchtime rush and there were folk in.

Staff were very friendly and did a great job of talking me through the menu. I ordered the cheesey Burns burger, a hand battered potato cake and a salted caramel shake. What the staff neglected to tell me was that Monday & Tuesday are half price burger days. My burger cost less than a Big Mac!!! Bonus.

So I sat at a retro space invaders table and it was very grotty from previous lunchers during the lunch rush. Staff were quick to clean this up once I had chosen my table and apologised.

The shake came out before the burger and was suitable thick and served with a paper straw. The rest of the meal came before too log and the Cheesey Burns was a tidy burger that was easy to eat. The pattie was cooked to medium. Meat patties are the only
meat I prefer well done but didn’t see it stated anywhere on the menu that there was a choice so I should have asked. I loved the sauce and and enjoyed the burger overall

The potato cake was golden and crispy.

Overall the set up and layout was pretty cool and I enjoyed the experience. I’m not one to give a hoot as to the organic nature of the food I consume so I’m judging and rating this restaurant without that consideration.

🍔
Ordered from Benny Burgers via UberEATS at work. I was keen to see what Shannon Bennett had to offer through burgers.
Plus: organic, ethical and sustainable 🙂
Ingredients were fresh and juicy. We had a few Mr Burns, Cluck Off and the Yoga Burger.
Burgers came packaged in these extremely cute boxes!

Downside: fries were soggy when they arrived (unfortunately with delivery), not much seasoning either.

Have eaten here twice now and cannot fault this place, the story behind it's creation, the fit out to most importantly the food. Love the cheesy burns and no apology double cheese, my partner loves the Mr Chang perfectly cooked beef amazing sauces and those firecracker fries wow! hand cut and crispy and delicious! The best part is you don't leave feeling heavy and gross like other places and you just know it's because the ingredients are such good quality. Thankyou Shannon Bennett

Benny Burger prides itself on being ethical, organic and sustainable. Its menu seems to be a blend of Aussie working class colloquialism – with burgers named ‘The High Vis’, ‘The Tradie’ and ‘The Apprentice’ – and good old-fashioned orientalism, with the predictably vegetarian ‘The Yoga Burger’ promising to ‘add a little Namaste to your day’.
Sarah Langford
Benny burger wins again for me. Good energy and friendly team. Consistently decent food. Simple but tasty, high quality and reasonably priced. Awesome work team Benny. We will be back soon!
Kate
Underwhelmed. With Shannon Bennett's name to the place and all the hype about locally-sourced ingredients, it was all a bit meh. Sure, the cheese is not an American import and is in fact an organic cheese made in Queensland, but it was still yellow and tasted of not much - sorry Mr Queensland Farmer. There was just nothing terribly unique or particularly enjoyable about the burger or the chips and the shake was mouth-puckeringly sugary, and since what I was eating was hardly healthy, I gave up after a few bites and sips.

Perhaps the most disappointing thing of all was that all the dine-in food is served in cardboard. Come on guys, surely that's a terrible move in an age where people are (albeit slowly) becoming more and more conscious of our waste footprint. If I were Benny Burger management, this is something I'd be looking to change as a priority.
R.M INC
Great selection of burgers and fries. tried Mr Potato Head and the mystery loaded fries. the burger was perfectly cooked and the potato cake in the middle bound the burger perfectly.
Adam Benson
absolutely outstanding food, really caring staff, great atmosphere, they really take the extra effort to make your dining experience better.
recommend the mystery burgers, the benny brew and those outstanding potato cakes.
Bobby
Had the vegetarian burger with some chips. Everything was high quality and pretty tasty.

Melbourne's burger scene is very competitive and these burgers don't leave you feeling 'heavy' or a mouth full of oil, but the flavour isn't quite there. It's an interesting trade off.

The 50% off burger on Mon-Tues is pretty good and makes it fantastic value.
Hungry Retriever
10 years ago this would've been a great burger.. Against the likes of Grill'd, etc., but not today, not in Melbourne.

Patty is average, slightly undercooked and has a pale bluish / purple hue that is unattractive. Bun ok, cheese good. Loaded fries good. Overall burger taste is below average.

Part of the disappointment is that the branding, fit out, menu are so over the top good.

Spend less on marketing, more on food.. And maybe focus groups.

Will give it another go in a year's time, it's early days yet.

Amazing burgers, chips and atmosphere is what you will definitely find in Benny Burgers! I really loved the look of the restaurant, and the staff is super friendly. I had the Mr Burns Cheese burger and it was delicious, and so was the chips. Really cool that they have self filling beers, Apple TV and a photo booth - something I haven't seen before. Will definitely be back back soon!!
Liv
I had the cheesy burns which was tasteless and boring... I also purchased the cheese fries and I had to throw them out. The cheese tasted very odd and salty. Disappointing.
Don Djoe
They are running a promotion now, half price burger on Monday and Tuesday. It is great value for your wallet. The burger though was just okay. It was somehow more salty than your average burger and its bun is probably one of the shiniest out there. On another occasion i had their chips and milkshake and again they were just okay. They also have a lot of staffs on shift, it's pretty easy to get their attention. One thing that annoyed me quite a bit is that they didn't provide napkins on the table, nor they served me one. I had to ask.

Very accommodating staff. Their burgers are excellent and does not leave a greasy feeling in the mouth. Very clean dinning place. Best of all.... free beer for all fathers on Father's Day :-) . I ordered The Chang and was happy with the taste.

I heard a lot about crowded place and a bit of wait on the order to come through, but we were at Benny Burger on a Sunday @11:45am and we got seated the moment we arrived. And our food came in to our table in about

Benny Burger was reasonably busy when I visited on Tuesday – which surprised me a little given the current rating.

I was advised the most popular burgers are The Hi-vis burger and The Chang. I went with the Hi-vis burger with a Moo Brew and fries. The burger was great, the all-important bacon was delicious and the milk bun was nice and fresh (good job avoiding the blasphemy of the brioche bun). The Brew was good and the fries weren’t bad either.

The service was fantastic and the ambiance of the joint is ace – I was offered free tokens to pay the built-in arcade game on my table. If the idea of eating with my hands after touching the buttons of the arcade game didn’t seem like a bad idea to me, I would have been all over that (germs, am I right? Who’s with me? Guys… guys?).

It was mentioned to me there is a new manager so things may be looking up for Benny Burger. I’d say Benny Burger is more or less as good as The Burger Project, which I have already noted my affection for. Would I come back? Why yes I would.

I visited Benny Burger in the weekend I was really impressed with the burgers. Perhaps they have improved on their first few weeks, it can take time to find your feet especially in Melbourne's culinary world and the high standards we have. The burgers we had were the delicious!

We had the Cheesy Burns (organic beef pattie, cheese, organic lettuce, tomato and onion) and The High Vis (organic beef patty, sizzling bacon, cheese, organic lettuce, onion & I added tomato). Both on a hand made bun. The buns were fresh and delicious and meat patty was succulent, flavourful and perfectly cooked. I think they must have refined and perfected the recipe because our experience was totally different to some of the other reviews.

The chips are served in this cute little container, they were ok but a bit too salty for us. The BBQ sauce was delicious though. They have a little 'help yourself' stand of sauce which is a great touch!

The desserts were yummy as well. We got the chocolate brownie concrete which was different to what we expected but nice. It had chocolate organic custard, chocolate brownie, mousse and chocolate sauce.

The chocolate thickshake was super duper thick, kind of like melted Icecream. But if you're a sweet tooth it's pretty awesome 😋

This place is in the heart of Swan st and worth checking out if you like burgers. Oh and they have old school arcade games which are SO much fun!!
Joel
has become my go to place for a pre footy bite, just a moments walk away from the MCG and 100% better then the garbage you eat there. everything is fresh and because they have just opened can only get better.
Chris Allan Melbourne
Delicious well thought burgers. Love the concept. Make sure you order a beer too and watch the bartender fill up the glass from the bottom.... Yes you read that right. Great service too.
Peter DellAquila
Took my kids to Benny Burger and have to say...WOW...the burgers are no doubt the best we have had..fresh,hot and very tasty..the service was quick and staff were very friendly....the store was so clean and eyecatching...would highly recommend this place...

Enjoyed the high quality service with very open and friendly staff, had to wait a little bit longer as it was a Monday during their half price burger day but was totally worth it.
Would advise the Chang or Cluck off for first timers with a shake or finely made coffee to compliment the delicious taste.
Definitely heading in again : )
Elias
Great chips! Firecracker was awesome. Concrete was really nice aswell. Loved the fact they had little gaming tables on the side - bringing back some old school pac memories.
Critique
Overhyped - possibly the worst burgers I've had in Melbourne. Had the cheeseburger with chips & the burger was soggy, uninspiring & had a strange after taste. I'm not concerned if the ingredients are organic if it is barely edible!!
Olivia Baker
OMG! Just inhaled the best chicken burger of my life! Crispy Panko-crumbed Breast, smokey streaky bacon, lettuce and a creamy special sauce all crammed in their signature Burnham Beeches milk bun. Mmmmmmmm....
My bestie opted for the mammoth Chang: juicy wagyu pattie, pickles, beetroot relish and an oozy egg. The house sauce is a marvel, Benny's take on Macca's special sauce is everything you could hope for and more. And don't get me started on the fries!!!!
Best of all, if their proper old-school thickshakes don't tickle your fancy, hit the Benny Burger cocktails: Manhattan, old-fashioned, or classic martini served from dinky little individual bottles. Cute! There is a massive collection of beers and wines too.
Also, check out the PAC-man table booths. So 80's it's cool again. This place is awesome. Will be returning again and again.

Great decor. The burgers are well and truly thoughtful. I love the ethical thought behind the burger. The beers are futuristic. A decent selection of drinks. I had the Lui bar cocktail. Was delicious. My partner got to grab his own beer, filled from a cool contraption! The Chang burger - stunning. The bun was lovely, brioche was one of the best I've had! The staff were so lovely and humble, a really strong team! Definitely a contender amongst some of melbourne best burger joints! apple tvs are cool! Definitely coming back!
Casey Mick
Benny burger was great. I took my family here and we all loved it. I got the bacon cheese burger. I think it was called the hi vis. Bun was on point and pattie was great. Milkshakes were spot on...seriously good.
Fiona
Just okay...burger was good but chips weren't edible, they had such a weird texture! It was like the potato had granules through it. We ordered normal chips and loaded chips, threw both out.

We ordered off UberEats so it might be nicer dining in since our meal arrived cold (they are 3 km away from us). Will try again!
Pania Walker
The yoga pattie is one of the best veg options i have had, crispy on the outside super juicy on the inside and super flavoursome. The staff are also super lovely and helpful.
Michael Soriano
Awesome burger! Definitely an ethical burger and coming back for more. Can't wait..I highly recommend best burger I ever tasted.See you soon.
Sara Sol Bigom
Went to benny burger for the second time today and we were not disappointed. We love our burgers!! Once again my son had the munchkin and I had the cluck off. It was delicious! We will keep coming back!
Matthewsheedy
Not sure if it was an off night but our burgers (hi-vis & Mr Burns) were very ordinary; dry buns with dry as a dry thing meat patties which were over cooked and rubbery. Tap beer is served in a plastic container (is there anything more disappointing for a beer lover?) At least the fries appeared to be house cut and the service was adequate. Lots of burger joints in this street and town, need to lift their game if they want to be anything more than a vanity project.
Dave
Popped in for a burger over the weekend, place is cool and some nice touches. Always a big fan of Shannon and his other venues. Hi Vis burger was good, nice flavour, decent chips and good beer offer.
Lars Sundstrom
I love me my burgers and I have tried most of the burgers in the area and Benny Burger is one of the worst. I went with three friends and all of us were disappointed.

In my case the beef patty was not good, the bun tasteless and cold, and as a combination the burger was almost devoid of any flavour. One of the worst burgers I have had in the area. Hello Sam down on Chapel is almost as bad. The fries were not good either. All up one if the worst burgers I have had in Melbourne.

Staff was ok, unengaged, almost grumpy. The eating room was ok, but did not feel inviting.

If you want a decent burger on the Swan strip The Beer & Burger Bar or Richmond Hotel have much better burgers.

I will never be back.
Alex Nash
Benny burger offers a range of options, catering for everyone and not sacrificing any quality in doing so, with a fun area and a family friendly environment I'd recommend this place to all my friends

Surprised to read so many crappy reviews. We ordered a couple of mystery burgers, which were delicious. Nice atmosphere and friendly outgoing staff. Good stuff !
