Review Oriental Impression Grill - Richmond

First time we went here during their first few months of operation, the food was really good and really tasty. However, when we went this time, it was too oily and too salty. I don’t know if there was some changes and I did notice that the meat serving became smaller. But anyways, if you guys wanna try it, try to come a bit earlier to avoid the queue.

Everything was fantastic. Love their lamb skewer. And their pipies. And their grill tofu skin. The eggplant was damn good. Definitely will go back to eat everything again 😆

Oriental never fails to deliver. The skewers are amazing. Great salads and noodles too! Highly recommended

There is always a line outside for a reason... The skewers are REALLY good. We missed out on the noodles last time we were there but that is a must next time when we go. The corn and the octopus are must haves.

My favourite Chinese grill restaurant. I wish I took pictures of the grill chicken skewers, squid skewers, Fishballs, dumplings etc. But as soon as they arrived at the table - only agenda was eating them. Sooo yummy. this place is always packed, doesn’t look fancy. I love it. Great food. Great prices.

Chinese skewer style restaurant that in recent times are seen everywhere. We tried this place before the lockdown and was thoroughly impressed with the food here! Highly recommend that you come with someone who can speak or read chinese mandarin because the menu and all the workers barely speaks English. The skewers are dusted in their special seasonings which is a little salty and spicy. I would recommend the lamb and the chicken skin. Food - 9 Service - 8 Vibe - 7 Price - $$$

Amazingly tasty bbq lamb skewers and lamb ribs. Not too spicy. Cold dishes complimented well and cancel out the oil/heat from bbq food. Well ventilated with all windows open so my hair and clothes didn't smell like bbq food afterwards. Waitresses were attentive but food was bit slow from kitchen. Recomended and we will go back!

If you want authentic chinese skewers then look no further, you must come here. All the skewers were superbly yummy especially pork belly and lamb. Salads and cold noodle were amazingly good. Friendly service.

Been wanting to come here for ages now. First time it was so packed we had to wait 30 minutes, second it was closed. Went on a quieter Thursday night and got a seat. The place is super authentic, makes you feel like you're in a restaurant in China.

We got:
Lamb skewers - pretty good
Chicken skewers - soft and delicious
Squid tentacle legs - great but quite salty
Pork sausage skewer - probably wouldn't order this one again, it was just a normal sausage
Grilled potatoes - thinly sliced and full of flavour
Grilled scallop - had SO much garlic - one of my favorites
Eggplant - was a very big serve. Was very soft and tonnes of garlic as well.
Green beans - very tasty but a bit oily which is normal for this type of Chinese cuisine.

Our whole meal came to about $55-$60 which was okay for two people.

Second time we tried the:
Chicken wings - super flavourful
Enoki Mushrooms - recommend!
Salad - quite refreshing as everything is quite salty!
Fried bun - same seasoning as the potatos

Would recommend if you've never tried this before (:

**3.5 stars** I finally decided to try out this restaurant. I didn’t understand why it was always full and many times, there’d be a queue waiting outside as well. It’s situated right at the end of the ‘eatery zone’ on Victoria street, in the opposite direction of the city.
From the outside, you’d assume it was some kind of restaurant where you could cook the meat in front of you (as you would at lots of Korean BBQ restaurants.) The name of the restaurant itself, led me to believe that anyway… Instead, it’s mainly just meat and veggies grilled in the back kitchen and brought out to your table. (Nothing wrong with that, as the smell of food won’t stick to your clothes as much!) There’s also an option for hot pots if you’re in the mood for something hearty and warm.
I found the menu to be a little overwhelming and hard to follow (The main one with pictures has Chinese language written underneath it). The restaurant also gives you a separate form where you then need to fill out/ tick which food you want. This would be easy for Chinese people. But for us, we had to ask for a form in English to read (no pictures attached, and some of the numbers don’t match the pictures in the Chinese menu). In any case, I just read out the food that I wanted to the waitress… All this aside, I get why this place is so popular. Mind you, we were surrounded by lots of people who were speaking in what sounds like Chinese.
The food is cheap, it comes out fast and it’s tasty! It’s also the easiest thing to share between your friends or family. I personally found a lot of the food I ordered to be oily and sometimes too salty. But it’s probably meant to be that way.
The skewers are the most popular food here. Staff will place your first skewer orders on a long plate and eventually, bring out the rest one-by-one by piling them on top that same plate. There’s a small bin on every table, where you throw the skewer sticks in once you’ve eaten the meat or veggie on them.
If you’re wondering about your drinks, you can basically walk out to the fridge and take them. Same as the water, if you’re having trouble getting the staff’s attention, just go grab them from the front. You can self-serve the sauces/ straws/ whatever you think you’re missing as well - they’re set on the small table in the front.
Overall, I found this place to be okay. I just don’t like how tight the space in and how close you can end up sitting next to the other people. It’s also a little noisy and the ambience doesn’t feel clean. But if you’re coming here for the food and something you can share with friends, it’s a nice option. Would I come back? Yes.

wow it is tasty indeed! The skewers and grilled vegetable are legendary!! The cold dishes are quite average ...the price seems cheap so I ordered too much ...end up spending more than $100 for two people haha but overall good food

Northern Chinese food. Never had it before so I wouldn't know if it was authentic or not. But I can tell you now, it doesn't taste like your ordinary Chinese food. So it must be authentic! I got to try soo many different skewers and dishes because my mum over ordered. Everything was so good!!! Grilled chicken wings were too salty for me but the gizzards, lamb kidney, intestines and other meats were splendid. The meats were smokey, BBQ-y and seasoned to perfection! And I don't eat a lot of organ types of food but loved everything here! Side dishes were quite unique with a bit of Korean inspirations which I didn't mind. Definetly need it to cut through the smokey BBQ flavour from all the meats. It gets very busy so get in early!

I would say it's authentic Dongbei BBQ. Reasonable price but with quite small portion. Lamb skewer and egg stir fried noodle are my 2 favourite dishes.

Went on Boxing Day 2017. Undoubtedly the best lamb skewers I've eaten in Australia. Completely reminded me of the streets of northern China. Cold Tsingtao beer, spicy lamb skewers and grilled chicken wings - could do them all day everyday!

Reasonable price and great authentic northern Chinese food. There is always a queue around 6 to 7 pm but you can easily get a table before or after.

Poor service, doesn't allowing booking, have to wait for a long time (we waited for more than an hour on Sunday evening). Environment is crowdy and dirty, greasy table and floor. Food is ok,but not worth the money we paid, definitely not worth the wait. Will not come back.

Authentic North East China food. Love the salad, very special and full of flavor. Grill food is nice too. Very busy at a Sunday night. Long queue to get a table.

Dirt cheap and delicious northern Chinese cuisine. Lots of chili, lots of offal, lamb and cumin, well worth a try if your adventurous. You can tell the quality from the smell from outside and the lack of white people eating there.

Gotta say it's one of the very few genuine Chinese style grill in melbourne. Everything else is so westernised in so-called themselves Chinese restaurant or they are just average. It's a casual chill place to go for a beer and smokey BBQ.

One of the better Chinese BBQ restaurant in Melbourne.

I went here with my friends for a Bday celebration. First impression was not very positive since our table wasn't even cleaned. Guess you can say it was high time so not enough staffs around. But when it came to the food, I've got to admit it was not bad at all. However everything was just decent without any notable dish. Probably will come back a second time to try out different dishes.

Amazing Chinese grill restaurant, love the pork belly and cold dish, perfect match.

Must recommend to everyone. Wings are perfectly grielled. Cold dishes bring surprise even in the cold days. Have to put my thumb up in fried noodles, for a grilled restaurant, their noodles are extremely recommended. Only one thing to remind, at better come in weekdays would not be tormented by crowd people.

Tasty food, the lamb ribs and skewers are highly recommended!
For the main... Fried noodles and dumpling are also good choices
Two of us spent around $50.. And we were really full and took 2 take away boxes...

Spam is not what I expect in "Special Fried Rice". I paid $10 for boiled rice, vegetables and spam. I ordered take away however I could tell their attention to hygiene is certainly not a priority.

Very unhappy.

The BBQ'ed lamb skewers are a must have! The dumplings are pretty good too, a pleasant surprise for a grill bar!
