Review Pho Chu Thai - Richmond

Edwar Kartio
One of the newer Vietnamese restaurant along Victoria St. They served pho and variety of Chinese dishes. The pho is pretty average, the broth was tasty but not too special. The dry noodles were better and tastier. The rice noodles are cooked nicely and the toppings they use complement each other. Food took a while to come out though. Food - 6 Service - 6 Vibe - 6 Price - $$

The chef is a master, I can't stop thinking about the taste. So good and the staff know what to do. I highly recommend to try their signature dishes. And of course Pho. I encourage people to try something that they haven't had. I mean you're a dingo if you order spring rolls and the like without being a bit adventurous, or you don't know what you are missing!!

One of the best Pho Da Bien Love have have had yet.

Enjoyed the meal with my friend and we drank beer and ate satay beef with special fried rice and spring rolls and the waiter was nice and helpful. I will certainly be returning and be recommending this venue for a wonderful, fresh and economical meal.

This used to be the cosy and yummy Thanh Thai. Now it is grim and not very yummy and dominated by a depressing aquarium from hell. The food is loaded with tasteless and cheap ingredients and even the prawn chips are terrible. The pictures on Zomato are the restaurant’s previous incarnation.

Great value for food

Great value and quality Vietnamese food, we had a fantastic feast and thoroughly enjoyed our meals will definitely be back

Worst pho I’ve ever had. Watery, over cooked noodles and just chunks of chicken with skin and bone. Service person was also rude
Nate Nay
ordered from here twice. both times on point. the condiment are all there plus some. pho broth is tasty but just a bit fatty. maybe cut down on the fat. but food is onpoint

Probably the best Pho I've had in Melbourne. I prefer to add a bit of chilli and Hoi Sin a la Hanoi and leave the bean sprouts off. Not quite as strong as the stock in Pho joints in Vietnam, but certainly passable and great if you need "Vietnamese Penicillin". Pho is the Vietnamese as chicken soup is to the Jewish! Both are awesome if you have a bit of a sniffle! Spring rolls here are great too!

With the unexpected (and very sad) closure of Thy Thy, I was on the hunt for the next best broken rice in Richmond, along the semi-decimated strip of Victoria Street.

I ordered the Special Grilled Pork Broken Rice as a takeaway. It was packed sturdily which made its transport home uneventful.

The broken rice was well cooked. The pickled vegetables were crunchy and not too sour - my taste buds had a good time. The star of the dish was the grilled pork which was tender and tasty. Everything tasted fresh and service was friendly enough (though slightly robotic).

So while I'm still pining for Thy Thy's broken rice special, Pho Chu Thai's version is an okay replacement for now.....

Pho Chu Thai has been open for over a year now. It’s one of the Vietnamese restaurants on Victoria Street that is often overlooked which is a shame. I come here a lot with family and friends because honestly, the standard is up to par with most of the restaurants on the same street. The price is a tad cheaper too. I find this place makes a fantastic fried flounder with spicy salt and pepper and you can’t go wrong with the fried quail. Maybe it’s the interior design that’s putting people off? The lighting is dim with minimal decorations and there’s a big, long mirror that covers one side of the wall. Service is pretty much what you can expect from Vietnamese restaurants in Melbourne - so so. Other than that, I can’t really fault this place. Come here for Vietnamese food!

Been their regular customer.. Melbourne city is like our second home.. and when we are here we visit pho chu the like 3-4 times a week.. but tonight will be our LAST visit... they ask $ 1 for extra spare bowl... its not the $ 1 is the issue but for us.. it is very rude and very ridiculous..
And the way they talk to the customer is just not acceptable... the service SUCKS! You are not the only restaurant that sells pho for god's sake... we are travelling with 5 years old kid who can' t finish pho by themself and we needed a decent sized bowl for the kid to eat. We only got (almost) a tea cup sized bowl.. (and it doesn't match the cutlery u provide)

Craving rice, and Richmond not being far from where I was, I decided to give Pho Chu Thai a go. I ordered the Vietnamese staple "Broken Rice". The pork chop was flavoursome and the Nuoc mam married well with the dish. Soup came out without me asking which is a plus! Definitely would come back!

Well for those that remember Thanh tam that was here before its pretty clear that they've changed hands and re branded to this now. Real darn shame that it did as before it was a institution, well known by many Vietnamese (even interstate) for having the best bun xiao which the new owners have effectively removed along with the good oldies like buhn khot. Well now its just another pho and stir fry restaurant which is sad. I must say however that their drop noodles are pretty good. Luckily Vung Tau is a couple of doors down that have all the old school traditional stuff.

We passed Victoria street, North Richmond on the way back and it was lunch time; whatelse the options that you have the most other than Vietnamese restaurants. This time we would try the new restaurant. From outside, it looked okay and nothing fancy. When we came, we felt very comfortable as we had a warm welcome from the customer staff and the place was very clean. The ambience was very nice and the customer staff threw few jokes to us.

We ordered :

* Rice vermicelli with grilled chicken and spring rolls for $11.00. (complementary chicken soup)
The rice vermicelli had great taste and spring rolls served were very fresh. It had a great value of dish, the taste was great served with absolutely fresh ingredients and the grilled chicken was perfectly seasoned and cooked. It's really recommended dish by considering of the price (cheaper than average), quality and taste.

* Special grilled pork broken rice for $11.00. (complementary chicken soup)
The broken rice served with grilled pork, shredded pork, and Vietnamese dish bì (thinly shredded pork mixed with cooked and thinly shredded pork skin).Grilled pork had great taste, perfectly cooked and it wasn't oily.Unfortunately, the shredded pork served on side was very dry and slightly tasteless. Other than that, we really enjoyed the dish.

Today the winner was rice vermicelli with grilled chicken and spring rolls!!

Yay : Service was great, grilled pork was perfectly cooked and had great taste, complementary chicken soup
Nay : N/A

Service : 4.0
Price : 3.5
Taste : 3.5
Speed : 3.5

Location : 172 Victoria Street, Richmond, Melbourne
Phone : 03 9429 8130

Food was absolutely delicious. They used fresh and quality ingredients in our Pho. The crispy prawns were cooked well and had great flavour. Staff were helpful and attentive. The venue itself was very clean- everything from the tables, cutlery and menus were spotless. You can tell they put a lot of effort into their family restaurant and have pride in it.

Decent service and good food. Pho noodles were nice and smooth and the broth was good. However, for $12 I could have gotten a better deal elsewhere. Also, I found the restaurant decor outdated.

First time back here after 8 years and can't help but found myself so disappointed. My partner ordered "banh hoi bo la lot" and it was average, I ordered "bun mam" and it was disappointing. My dish wasn't brought out till my partner nearly finished his dish. What I got wasn't bun mam but instead "bun nuoc Leo" , I guess they should rename it, if they said bun mam on the menu, better serve an authentic one. The flavour was not there either. Got no problem with the service except for the time I have waited for my dish, but waiters weren't that enthusiastic. If you would like to try authentic food, this is not the place. I probably won't come back anytime soon.

Good service and excellent food. Been here many times. Tried all popular food: noodles, yellow pancake, cold noodles dishes, white ice coffee, fruits drinks etc. Always nice.

Enjoyed a nice relaxing fresh lunch at Thanh Tam. Service was fast and I ordered the entree of pork springrolls which were served with iceberg lettuce and fish sauce.

I also had the Rice Vermicelli with Shredded Pork and Spring roles which was very refreshing along with the Rice Vermicelli with Beef Betel leaf. The beef wrap was slightly dry so a little disappointing.

The overall highlight was the three colour drink which consists of crushed ice , coconut milk with mung beans and 'green noodles' which are made from water chestnut starch. This is a highly recommended for those hot Melbourne days. - EK

Fabulous and fresh Vietnamese food. Friendly staff. Generous servings and extensive menu. Value for money. We have tried most along this strip and Thanh Tam is certainly a top pick for us

This restaurant is a bit contradicting, tried their broken rice, pancake and few other dishes was not that nice. But we loveeeee their cambodian noodle soup with their prawn spring rolls, its a perfect combination. We always go back only for that.

Ordered their quail, ribs and broken rice, all was standard, the ribs got sour taste which is weird. The vermicelli pork soup, the taste of the soup itself is the same with cambodian one, so i think the clear soup taste the same.
The thai ice tea was ok, the tamarind drink was super sweet but nice.

Highly recommend!
My bf and I are pho addicts, we went so many Vietnamese restaurant but this is one of the best place in Melbourne!
Food is very fresh and tasty, service is quick, staff are very nice and friendly.
We are always happy when we go there.

Simple but great Viet food. Simple decor
And plenty of people when we visited on a Saturday at lunch. BAnh Xeo was fantastic. Best tasted outside of Vietnam.

Nowadays when I am craving Vietnamese I don't go for Pho; rather I try other soup dishes like Bun Bo Hue (sort of like a spicy version of pho, but with different noodles) or my recent favourite, Bun Rieu (Crab Rice Vermicelli Tomato Soup).

Both the Bun Rieu and Bun Bo Hue had a delicious broth however I have had better in Footscray and other Viet restaurants in Richmond. Also, we felt extremely thirsty after.

The combination spring rolls, came with a variety of pork, chicken and vegetables. Given they weren't labelled or anything, I don't think I got a chance to try the chicken one lol.

If you can push the salt/msg laden broth aside, this place is pretty good, and also cheap.
Thrice As Nice
Always love a great Banh Xeo (Vietnamese savory crepes) made from flour, turmeric and other richness it differs to typical egg crepes of the French.

I had the prawn and pork crepes and strappy husband had pork and prawn rice noodle. Both were yummy.

The only negative is the decor of the restaurant has not changed for yonks....then again you are not eating the decor! This place is great for every day Vietnamese food in the heart of Victoria Street.

Great cheap meal. Tea they serve is nice too. I have a bigger appetite than most so I found the serving size a touch small for me. Can't comment on service as it wasn't busy when I was there.
Highly recommend it.

Awesome vegetarian / vegan options. Waitress asked me if I want a proper vegetarian sauce (no fish sauce) which shows they are all over it. Steamed rice noodle rolls are a traditional fav I believe. So fresh and delicious. Bun Salad bowl is epic and walked out feeling full for $35 with a drink. Great HEALTHY OPTION place!

Really nice Asian food. cheap and quick and tasty. Great szech chickena nd lemon chicken and the fried rice is proper fried rice, not glugy and with heaps of flavours and additions. Well done. Will be back.

Best Vietnamese food on Victoria street. Staff are super friendly and food comes out quick and fresh. Steamed rice paper rolls are unbelievable!

Thanh Tam has the best Vietnamese Pancake in town, it comes with lettuce and mint and with the dipping sauce which make you feel so fresh and so light even its really big. And i also had some vermicelli with beef in betel leaves, it was really good too. Definitely come back here more often with family and friends. Its my new favourite restaurant now. Recommended for who is looking for a good Vietnamese on Victoria Street
TheZenChick
My favourite Vietnamese restaurant down Victoria street. The seafood pancake is always a winner which (even having been to Vietnam I think is better here) and the pho is always fresh!
Nice place with good food. I had the pork with rice, shredded pork, egg, tomato and cucumber. The pork was nice and the sauce was flavoursome. The rice noodle soup was good, the noodles were perfect but there were too many sprouts.

My new favourite Vietnamese in Richmond. Clean and spacious. Service is delightful. Food is fantastic and very reasonably priced. Pork spring rolls with herbs and lettuce were spot on. The curry was unexpectedly complex and the chicken was fall-apart tender. The garlic vegies came with loads of garlic of lots of tofu so a very filling and substantial dish. The owner - a man in his 50s or so - was just great. He does the same thing day after day night after night and was proud of his business and rightly so. Highly recommended.
Stow Food
Vegetarian noodle soup for $10. Lack of sauce options was disappointing. Nice clean broth. Not a huge fan of the cashews though. Tea was spot on and hot. Waiter straight out of the movies - crisp haircut!
This is were you get the best Vietnamese Pancake in town! They're huge too, Filled with Prawn and Pork, one of them can be shared if backed up with a salad or something else. Such a great place for a weekend lunch and the young staff are so nice and helpful too

Simply Brilliant!!. We by chance just walked in. We sat and asked for suggestions on what to eat. The main waiter/owner picked all entrees and mains for us and everyone was brilliant!! Good was in front of us in minutes, and the hospitality kept on coming, showing us newbies how to properly eat the Vietnamese pancake. It is a must!!! Thank you, we will be recommending and will certainly be back!

Very friendly and fast service and the food was sensational! Definitely coming back here again! Go for the Vietnamese Omelette! Yum!!

The flavours were spot on, and the veggies in particular tasted super fresh. Despite using more batter to give that larger-than-average pancake size, they still managed to cook it well; the dish wasn’t soggy or mooshy, and the pancake possessed much crispiness. It’s not hard to see why Pamoooola recommended this restaurant!

Thanh Tam is a pretty typical Victoria St restaurant, the fit out is clean and simple but nothing to write home about. The first thing I noticed walking in though was the 2 boxes of tissues on our table. I was a little confused. The reason for all the tissues became clearer later in the m

In some Vietnamese cafes at Little Saigon Market in Footscray, I have seen plates in the bain-marie loaded with thick soft white rice paper rolls filled with something. I tried asking what the dish was, but with the staff's lack of English and my lack of Vietnamese, I hit a dead end. I tried Googling 'rice noodle sheets' on Google Images and found out the dish is called banh cuon. I have seen recipes for banh cuon but making the noodle sheets is very low down on my list of cooking attempts! I wanted to try
Cloudcontrol
It was a solid effort, but I'll be honest and say I've had better.

Been here several times. We used to try a new place each time we came to Vic St but since finding Thanh Tam, there's no reason to look anywhere else. Good value, great service, consistently tasty food.

Racist. We were here and ordered before two other customers came in. We had our food served last because we were not viets. Very disappointed.

Love it here. My family and I thoroughly enjoy visiting this restaurant. The food seems to be authentic in flavours, it's very consistent and always cooked really well. We love the pork and prawn crispy pancake also the steamed rice paper roll dish. My children love the salt and pepper calamari and we enjoy the coleslaw. It's worth a try, we haven't been disappointed to date and have visited many times over the years :))

I had a very bad reaction to having soup that what I can only imagine had bucket loads of MSG in it. I thought it tasted very strong/strange and 10 mins after eating I reacted with throat swelling and felt a strange dizziness. I eat Asian food weekly and have never had that reaction before.

Really like it I got recomm.... Really like it
I got recommend from my Vietnamese friends of this place. So i deceided to take my family to come and try this restaurant. I really amazed how good was the food here, we had the Vietnamese Pancake which was huge and cripy and it came with fresh lettuce as well, we also shared the beef in vine leaves which was really good aswell. And my relatives had some Pho and them love it. The broken rice was good too. The atmosphere was great, we felt like in Vietnam again. And all the staff are very friendly, always have an smile on them which i really impress eventhough thier restaurant quite busy at dinner time. This is become my favourite Vietnamese Restaurant on Victoria from now on. We'll try to come to the restaurant more often and discover alot more dishes. Really recommend for who loves Vietnamese Cuisine

Love it here. Food is always delicious and fresh. Staff are friendly and attentive as Victoria Street does.
Go the pork spare ribs!

I regret wasting my time n money here. The dish was below average n customer service was the worst. They should definitely hire more waiting n kitchen staff. Meat was rubbery. Food was not cheap either. $12 for a tiny crepe? Seriously? My first time n never ever going back. So stay away!
Luan
This resteraunt's service is freaking bad wait for 15 mins for them to come and take order, when we need the waiter they all gather in the counter talking and stuffs
Melle
Lack of customer service - not coming back. Came here for some authentic Vietnamese dishes and tried the Banh Cuon which was really nice! Also ordered the Diced Beef on Rice (Bo Luc Lac) which was very disappointing as the meat was way too soft and no longer had a meaty texture to it... I think they over tenderized the meat with Baking Soda.

Customer service was not that great either. The male waiter was not very attentive at all and came up to our table for orders and did not say a word to us at all and stood there grumpily waiting for our orders.

Even though the Banh Cuon is nice I will not come back as this place lacks customer service.

Great food, great environment and all the staffs are very friendly. The foods are amazing and traditional just vietnam! Specials like the pancake and the steamed rice paper rolls are must try dishes. Foods aren't too expensive and tastes second to none. They also do delivery now.

Staff are attentive and kid friendly. Food is delicious.

Bring your taste buds to Vietnam!. Get your taste buds tingling with this authentic little Vietnamese restaurant. Having been to Vietnam the sensational clean fresh flavours haunted me until I found this place. Have visited on many occasions and have always been pleased. Reasonable prices, fresh food, good wait staff and a real feel of Vietnam.

Overpriced average food. Mi.... Overpriced average food.
Minipancakes ($11) are tiny. Each minipancake contains a single mini (cashew size) shrimp. The dish comes with no mint/basil or lettuce. I requested some, and was charged $3 extra without warning. Teeny tiny pancakes with some lettuce ended up costing $14! Most expensive and very average vietnamese on the strip! Never again...

Fave vermicelli. I've tried a few vermicelli on Vic St and these guys do my fave! Always reliable, generous serve and super tasty.

Cheap eat Great value. Best Vietnamese cuisine I have had in Melb, also recommended by a Vietnamese friend
Offer quite a range of different dishes not found in other Viet restaurant, more importantly, good food with cheap price!
Three of us ordered 4 dishes including a roasted quail dish plus 3 drinks and it costs only $60! incredible!
Lucy
Friendly service, food was great and came out fast. So good for value.

I think you could do much better on Victoria street. The prawn rice paper roll had random fried fish ball and cheap cuts of cold deli meat on the plate not very appetizing , alot of fried items on menu left us with limited choice . The seafood salad combo was dissapointing with cheap bits of crab you'd find from a supermarket deli overpowered with chilli and fennel, this with the quail we left with a confused state of mouth .
Westgarth Girl
Too much MSG. I was up until 3am. Four of us ate there. It was our second visit, - I have been so thirsty and unsettled. Never ever again.

Dodgy. Hiya.. think I got ripped off at this place.

I went to this place to have some great food but I was utterly disappointed. I've ordered fried flounder which in the menu (that was given to me) shows $14-$15 but when I went to pay for it.. they said its $35 ... I took a look at the menu that was at the cash counter and found that its different from what I was given... My only suggestion is .. guys if you're going to this place, pls make sure you confirm the prices before your order the the dish...
Wocksie
Great Vietnamese. Thanh Tam is the second Vietnamese in Victoria Street we regularly visit and lunch yesterday did not disappoint. Great tasting food, fresh and quality stuff. Rice paper rolls are the best and coleslaw is a bit different than you generally get and is nice and refreshing. Had salt and pepper squid for the first time here and it was tender and delicious. Vietnamese pancake was good too - there haven't been many things we've had here in the past that have not been fine to be honest. Prices are good and staff is friendly and attentive. Place is quite small and tables can be a bit close together and can be a bit small when it's busy (and you don't get a double table when there's only two of you and the pancake therefore barely fits) but it's friendlier and more relaxed I think. Overall great Vietnamese!
Asianfoodlover
One of the worst Vietnamese food out there. I ate at many Viet food but was extremely disappointed with this place. The sauce taste so sweet that it's more like a desert than main food. And all different food get this same sweet sauce while they are supposed to be different. Never go back again
Luke Le
Ban Cuon. The name's wrong, it's "Banh Cuon" or "Bánh Cuốn" in Vietnamese.
Gumby
Maybe best on vic St and top value.
Erik
Worse restaurant ever. There was barely anything on the menu that was actually in the store the waiter was very rude and the food was nothing to standard DO NOT EAT HERE
Andrew Kelly
Awesome. Thanh Tam (formerly Thanh Ha) serves brilliant Vietnamese hawker style food. They are know for Ban Coun - tasty fat rice noodle with meat and mushroom inside, Banh Xeo - crispy thin pancake with meat and vegetables inside, Bo la lot - grilled beef slices wrapped in Beetel nut leaf. The lists goes on. I wasn't expecting much when I walked in, however was thoroughly surprised at the presentation of the food and the clean taste. Everything was super tasty and very addictive. I have tried hawker food here and in Vietnam, but I found this to be my favourite so far. They've done everything right here.
Ilovefood
A Winner!. I went here with a group of friends on the weekend, and we all loved it! We had springs rolls wrapped in lettuce leaves, beef in betel leaves, vietnamese pancakes, vietnamese 'coleslaw' and wonton soup. Everything was delicious. The only bad thing was there was too much bean sprouts and not enough seafood in our pancake. It was a very cheap meal - about $15pp.
I can't wait to eat there again and try the rest of the menu!
Mic Cullen
All good. Checked this one out on a Tuesday evening, pretty early on. Reasonable busy but not too full. Excellent selection on the menu, good prices. We had the "Fried Squid Arms with Spicy Salted & Pepper" and the Sweet & Sour Pork, with a large "Streamed Rice" (sic). Both excellent. Chinese tea was hot but a bit bland. Didn't get the water we asked for.

Overall good, and will go back.

I know this is supposed to be a Brisbane food blog, but I've now been to Thanh Ha in Melbourne twice and the food is so good, it's more than worthy of a mention. Thanh Ha is on Victoria Street in Richmond, along with another 20 or so Vietnamese restaurant

Everything I have had there ranged from good to awesome. I haven’t been let down by any dish there yet.
