Review Flake Out - Richmond

Amazing food - very clean establishment and seems like all sauces are made in house! Will be returning!

Had a very good, value for money meal. Fish was well cooked and calamari was very tender. I have fussy kids who loved it. Friendly service and the sauces were made in house. Would recommend for a family take away meal.

newly opened shop. Has a good vibe of it. I liked their classic fish n chips and the calamari ring a lot. Specially the batter is heavenly. However, it wasn’t crispy enough. Besides, I would definitely come back to try again.

Thought I'd give this place a try as it's a bit closer than my usual fish and chipper. Definitely the worst peice of fried flake I've ever had... the fish was chewy - not something I've ever encountered with fish of any kind. My daughter and I had a few bites then gave the rest to the dog. He didn't seem to mind it, but he also eats garbage when he can get it. 🤔

Amazing! I remember when this place used to be open, and it has comeback with a vengeance! Not sure if they are new owners, but the batter is superb and heaps better than ever before. Quality & price is great. They’ve got me as a new regular for sure :)

The place is under new ownership and is renovated, immacutely clean with most importantly, delicious food. The chips are insanely good - well seasoned, crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Fish is also very moreish with a tasty and unique batter that I haven't had elsewhere. Service is always polite and well mannered. Honestly one of the best fish and chips shop I've visited in recent years.

I haven’t had old school fish and chips for too long. So it was time to give it a go. This shop has a new recent owner and the shop is now bright, spotlessly clean and the food great quality.

I ordered a "Dinner by the Yarra" which was 2 fish, 4 calamari rings, 2 South Melbourne Dim Sims, (pork and beef), large chips and 2 potato cakes.

I had BIG eyes and the food was cooked fresh and the service was excellent. The new owner was friendly, polite and he told me that he is new going to produce a new menu in September which will have chicken wings and drumsticks, and new vegetarian burgers.

The fish was good, really tasty. The rest of the food was also really tasty, hot crispy and not greasy.

But the best part was the South Melbourne Dim Sims. If you haven’t tried these you have to give them a go. The ones I had were crispy on the outside, and the filling was perfect! My bad, I forgot to take photos of the extras so I’ll go have to go back lol

Overall this is a good place to visit with easy parking on Victoria Street.

FYI the photos on Zomato are really outdated.

Was obviously having fryer issues at the time. Oil was not hot enough so both fish and chips came out warm and soggy even after waiting 25+ minutes.

Oil wasn't hot enough so after waiting a long time the fish was under cooked, calamari rings were soggy as were the chips. Ordered the South Melbourne pack because I wanted a Dim Sim and it was missing from the order. I believe they were aware of the issue as there was a problem with the order before mine with missing food they couldn't cook due to oil, also continued to take orders while I was waiting. Ate a few chips and a bite of the fish before throwing the pack out, not recommended.

My daughter, granddaughter and I bought fish and chips from here last week, oct 2018. The service was slow and confused and took over half an hour to finalise. The fish was undercooked and batter disgusting, pale and inedible. The chips were something else - equally pale, undercooked, soggy, grim beyond compare. We threw the disgusting effort at fish and chips in a rubbish bin it was so appalling. Also it was extremely overpriced. All in all it was my worst ever food experience whilst in Australia. No recommendation whatsoever, dont do it!

I'm not one to boast, but when it comes to potato cakes, I'm probably one of Australia's preeminent potato cake connoisseurs. This man's potato cakes are world class. If potato cake production got the same sort of attention as fine dining experiences, this place would have a Michelin star.

Marginally better than starving.
$12.50 for fish and chips with a dim sim and can of coke. Oil wasn't hot enough so everything was a soggy oily mess, not a single crunchy chip. Would recommend a health inspection.

Sorry to say that this was the worst fish and chips I have ever had. The couple running it are lovely, but the food was inedible. Frozen battered fish was soggy, old oil made the dim sims dark brown and taste odd, chips and potato cakes so soggy and undercooked. Won't order again.

Best I've had in Melbourne. I grew up in fish and chip shops and am a very hard man to impress. Nice Flake, great batter, reasonably recently changed oil.

Great chips and great service. George always serves with a smile. Best chip shop in Australia if not the world. Would eat this for every meal if it was open for breakfast.

Best chip I've found in Melbourne. It surprises me this place isn't more popular. Fresh cut chips, none of that frozen rubbish. George runs a great shop.

Updated: went here 10/02 and had the worst fish and chips of my life. Left feedback on the site before posting here but seems nothing has changed. Folks have renovated the old blokes shop and it’s terrible, oil wasn’t hot enough and I was handed a soggy mess. To boot, the potato cakes were just machine pressed nonsense. 1 star is too much

Solid old school fish and chip joint you would have gone to as a kid. Freshly battered flake, cooked in to crispy perfection and the best potato cake this little elephant done seen. Come here for a chat and no fuss feed before every fish and chip store becomes fancy pants nonsense.
