We’ve tried this place twice, once for lunch and once for bbq dinner.
We really liked how homey ans generously portioned the food is. My favourite was the stirfry pork. It packs a punch of spice. The egg soup was savory and smooth. Perfect with rice.
The bbq is good too. The charcoal bbq gives smoky and aromatic meat but ventilation was good enough. The beef rib was very tender and the pork belly was flavourful. I was delighted to see intestines on the menu. They also give you a basket of shredded lettuce which goes really well with the fatty meat.
The spicy crab was ok, it satisfied the cravings but was a little expensive.
Their banchan is a little different, which is quite refreshing.
3.5/5 There are many Korean BBQ restaurants in West Ryde and nearby suburb Eastwood. I have often gone to Stoneage and the Barn several times before so I thought I'd check out Mapo Charcoal BBQ for the first time for something different. I've walked past this Mapo Charcoal BBQ often when I used to live in West Ryde. Mapo Charcoal BBQ is located on Victoria Rd. As I walk in, I see most of the tables being filled by Koreans so I hope this is a good sign.
Came here with a few mates during the weekend for apparently was one of the ‘best Gamjatangs in Sydney!’ . I think the flavour of the soup was on par to that of Kogi in Haymarket. However the meat was chunkier and more tender here (with bits of bone marrow here and there). My friend also recommended the dumplings, which I happily contended that it was pan fried to perfection.
friendly service & great tasting food... bbq meat was well marinaded with sauce well prepared...all their side dishes are so delicious you can eat heaps of it ! hard to point any negatives with this place... a MUST PLACE VISIT for any KOREAN BBQ FAN in Sydney
Friendly staff and service.
Marinated pork spare ribs is one of the best I've had in Sydney so far. Other items were fairly standard but pork is highly recommended.
Definitely will be back.
Lovely food and reasonable price. We had seasoned crab and pancake. The crab was delicious but the pancake was tiny bit of a let down.
There are 2 entrances depending on if you are on Victoria Road or the back street, there is a selection of pork, beef, chicken, duck and lamb for barbecue or there are also soups as well. For dinner it is required to order barbecue. Standard selection of beer and soju. The barbecue is coal fired so there is good taste in the meat.
Quality of meat is acceptable, pricing for 2 is around $100-$120 for dinner.
Generous serving portions, & customer service was fantastic!
My family & I had our own serving of the delicious spicy beef & vegetable soup/hotpot (Yuk gae Jung). Upon receiving our food, we realized we could have ordered two soups, yet we all polished off our respective servings 🤤
The ‘ban-Chan’ side dishes were delicious, fresh & well seasoned, ranging from kimchi, acorn jelly, known as ‘mook’ & another marinated bean sprout dish. To be perfectly blunt, the side dishes were not doused in mayonnaise & were traditional Korean side dishes.
Highly recommend.
You can tell the authenticity of this place just by the bustling atmosphere and the serving aunty who told you off for putting too much meat on the grille. Did I mention they served marinaded raw crab as a side dish😳 Totally worth the price I paid for the meat!
