Wow! I am so glad that we stumbled on this place. The mushroom entree honestly blew my mind, and was one of the best things I have ever eaten. The gnocchi was yum, nothing as special as the entree, but still a delicious main. We also really enjoyed our deserts. One of the best fine dining experiences I have had, and I would recommend this place to anyone in the area.
A really good surprise for me. Little gem in this area. Ordered the entree with tataki kingfish which was spectacular. You can hardly find any good food in Gippsland with this standard. The combination of sesame crumbed kingfish with wasabi mayo, soy pearls and pickles , yummmm. Had a 20 hour cook lamb rump for mains. Lamb rump seems to be a little tough from a 20 hours cook, nevertheless it was a good dish, slightly on the salty side.
Delicious food for entree main and desert with the garlic bread being crispy and flavoursome with enough to share between two people without getting too full.
For mains the barrimundi was fantastic and complimented perfectly by the sauce and seafood it was served with. A fantastic flavour and texture that makes it the best fish I have ever had. The pork belly was cooked perfectly with an amazing texture and taste. The puree it was served with was also fantastic and went perfectly with the meat.
For dessert the chocolate panna cotta was fantastic and not too large after a huge main. The only downside of the whole experience was the cost was quite expensive being $133 for two people. Great for a night out but need to budget for it. Some of the best food i have ever eaten.
Would come back here again if in Sale. Lovely cosy restaurant.. went there on a Tuesday night and was packed by 7.30pm. Enjoyed the pavlova the most! Not too sweet, and the icy berry was a perfect balance for the crunch in the pavlova. The Market Fish is also fresh and well cooked, and the prawn bisque over the fish was really delicious. Amazing ambience as though dinning in a comfy home. The place was surprisingly really packed for a small town like Sale! And more surprisingly was that the entrees, mains and dessert were competitive head-to-head with restaurants like these in Melbourne CBD.
We had the Smoked Kangaroo fillet with beetroot and homemade cream for the entree. The flavours were carefully planned to balance the gamey flavour of the roo. We also had a Charcuterie Board filled with pate, dried yet succulent raisins, mild blue cheese, quince, home smoked chorizo, prosciutto and crispy bread. It was a beautifully laid out board!
For my mains I had the duck breast and leg with cherry sauce. AmaZing. The breast of duck cooked to a tender medium-done perfection! I really enjoyed it. My friends' barramundi and roasted chicken were great as well.
For dessert which I have attached a photo, wow. Never tasted pavlova and meringue this balanced and textured. It wasn't very sweet, and it was a little sticky like a melted marshmallow. Do give this one a try when you're in Sale! Make a booking as they get quite packed towards 7pm.
The staff were really friendly, they allowed us to bring my little Furchild into the restaurant in a crate so she didn't have to sit alone outside the house in the yard 😹

O'Neils is a restaurant that attracts people that lean towards quality and presentation when it comes to their food. I had the scallops for entrée and the duck for my main meal. The food is priced at the high end for a country town which would surely discourage the average punter that frequents any of the local hotels for their daily staples.
Normally I by pass Sale but after eating here I think I owe it to my other half to share the experience.
I've had the pleasure of enjoying several meals of Oneills now. Tonight I had the delicious Barramundi and green bean side salad. The Barramundi was perfectly prepared with crisp skin and the green beans came with this amazing vinaigrette. Excellent!
Service was excellent, food was on point. Couldn't fault the charcuterie or the steak. Amazing. Special mention for that cheese pate in the charcuterie. Would definitely recommend for fine dining in Sale.

The best place to eat in Sale, hands down! The number one spot in Sale is definitely Oneills!
This place really nails all 4 big critique categories; food, service, atmosphere and decor.
The venue is a converted house, with the kitchen as the counter and re open lounges as a dinning area. This adds to the warmth and coziness of the environment. The table layout, modern home style decor and lighting really add an extra layer to the element of a relaxing but still upmarket venue.
The service here is outstanding, all waitstaff are friendly and attentive but special mention must be made to the man of the house Kurt, who is a fantastic host and Allison a lovely waitress who is always super friendly and talkative :)
The food is out of this world, with some of the best chef inspired flavour, texture and presentation combinations for unique masterchef-esque dishes! A big shout out goes to the chefs who create these amazingly prepared and presented dishes with creativity and skill. This place would hold its own against some of the top restaurants in Melbourne. The main menu is often changed and signature dishes are modified so there is always something fresh and new to try. Portion size of the meals are not huge but they're also not tiny either, but well balanced for multi course options but still filling enough to have a stand alone main.
After having tried many of the dishes here, my favourites include:
For entree, you can not go past the pepper crusted veal loin, this is the best entree available, cooked amazingly tender and moist, with the perfect amount of flavouring, this dish offers great taste and texture for your palette. Other nice entrees include the scallops and the spanner crab. The shared platter is also a nice to share between two but would be better with tasters from the main entrees. I would not recommend the bruschetta as it is more like an open tomato, ham and cheese sandwich and is not an ideal entree.
For mains, I highly recommend the Gippsland eye fillet, this is such a different but awesome take on a classic steak dish, cooked perfectly and placed on top of a potato gratin and with a red wine jus, it's exquisite.
I also really enjoyed the Cape Otway pork belly with its perfectly cooked crispy skin, the smoked lamb rack which had such a strong authentic smoky taste and the chicken breast which was cooked succulently and again was flavoured to perfection. I was not a big fan of the Berkshire pork belly as the flavours seemed to clash with the sides and was not as good as the first pork dish I tried.
The desserts here are always something special to save room for, they do amazing flavoured cheesecake variations, my favourite two would have to be the coffee and the Mars bar inspired cheesecakes. The shared dessert platter is perfect for two as it gives you a taste of the main dessert options and allows you to try a bit of everything.
This place is definitely an upmarket venue, with a premium price to match however it is definitely worth every cent with its high quality food and high level of service, this is truly a great dining experience for any foodie!

I went to Oneills with a colleague for dinner and it was amazing. I've heard a lot about this place from other colleagues and it definitely lived up to the hype. We ordered the scallops as an entree and shared this between the two of us. This was cooked perfectly -I could not fault this at all!
Next, I had the 250gm Beef Eye Fillet and I would consider this to be within the top 5 best steaks I've had. It was cooked medium-rare as I had ordered and everything on the plate accompanied each other quite well.
For dessert, my colleague and I shared the Tim Tam cheesecake as well as salted caramel. The waiter apologised for the cheesecake as it hadn't set properly and gave this to us on the house! Despite it's appearance, it still tasted really nice though the texture, understandably, was a bit lacking. The salted caramel, on the other hand, was served with coconut ice-cream covered with chocolate and was also quite tasty.
Overall, I would rate my experience at Oneills highly. The ambiance, staff and food were amazing and I would definitely stop by here again if I had the chance,
First class food. We dined at O'Neill's on a recent Thursday night and couldn't speak highly enough of the service, ambience and food we experienced. Kurt, our maître de, was understated, yet friendly and knowledgable about the superb wine (mostly local) and food offered. I chose the fish of the day which was barramundi served with pasta and a very tantalising sauce, while my husband enjoyed duck with pappardelle in another fabulous sauce. We shared a pannacotta with a difference and finally a Pedro Ximenez - all beyond reproach! In the words of another great Australian, when you're next in Sale, 'do yourself a favour and dine at O'Neills'!!

Wonderful!. O'Neills reminded me that restaurants can have excellent friendly hospitable staff, tasteful modern decor and be absolutely CLEAN. Very good value too. I had a lamb curry with rice which was an adequate serve and delightful to eat. My partner had fish chips and salad which she said was delicious and on the top of the list for our next visit. Thank you for a wonderful lunch at the end of our holiday.
Local Lad. I have attended this venue many time every single time I walk out impressed, when David owned this venue he knew your name and always made you feel special the food and menu are the best in sale undoubtedly so much so I feel they could increase their price and still cater to a full house. The wine list is 8/10 but still the best in sale. The venue is now under new owners since then I have only been twice new manager seems a little stuck up however the meals have been fine
Superb Dining Experience. We dined at O'Neills Restaurant last week and it was a truly wonderful experience! The food was amazing and the service was impeccable. Karen and Kurt are both genuine people without any pretence. They were both naturally warm and friendly, without being over the top. We'll be back again!
We had our wedding reception here a while back now and fell in love with the people and the food from the first moment that we walked in. Even a change in management and a few kitchen staff changes has not diminished the service and quality that you get. Always love the food and service is amazing. Will keep coming back.
Beautiful food, but quite expensive. On the plus side, the wine list wasn't that expensive. Will be going back!
Oneils was really lovely, the service was lovely and the food was exceptional.
We had the antipasto for starters it was perfect had all the meats to try that were in the mains and cheeses with salmon and bread was well worth it, my boyfriend had the kangaroo and it was succulent and the seasoning on it was superb. I had the lamb and it just melted in your mouth was soo tender and the sauce that accompanied it was perfect the potatoes were just right and in the end I was soo full buy it was just too good to stop eating:) definetly go back
An elegant affair!. Had a lovely evening at ONeills last night. The atmosphere was warm and friendly, the wine was fabulous and the meals we ordered were delicious. The amazing thing was we spent no more than we would have at any of the other gastro pubs in Sale, and yet the staff , ingredients used and general ambience were miles away from anything else on offer in the area. Shall definitely be returning.
Service and food were great. Lovely atmosphere as per usual. We will be back.

A little lacklustre. On Friday night my family and I dined at O'Neills Restaurant.
I ordered 2 entrees (1 for main) as O'Neills portions are, in my opinion, ridiculously large. My first entree was scallops with garlic risoni and anchovy paste - although the scallops were cooked to perfection, the garlic was no where to be found. I was left wanting when it came to flavour and I was searching for more anchovy paste to give the risoni some taste.
My second entree was the dukkah coated chicken with broad bean puree and yoghurt. This entree was a step above the last with plenty of flavour and very tender chicken. Unfortunately, after my entrees I was too stuffed to try anything on the dessert menu and I wish O'Neills would consider reducing their portion size (and price) so that I can enjoy a 3 course meal.
Now to my family's meals. My mother's entree was on the 'specials' and was a creamy seafood tart - unfortunately it was served lukewarm and like my first entree lacked definitive flavour. When it came to mains, my mother and sister had the chicken stack, which they enjoyed (but again too big), my other sister had the lamb shoulder, which was cooked beautifully (but again, far too big and a tad oily) whilst my father ordered the steak from the 'specials', which was overcooked - although the waitress noticed this and offered a complimentary drink.
Overall, the dinner was enjoyable enough but I and my family were a little disappointed in the lack of flavour in some of the dishes. O'Neills certainly has potential and perhaps by focusing more on quality and less on quantity (size of meals) they can achieve new heights.

Casual Dinner. We are infrequent dinners at O'Neills, we have always enjoyed the food, prices are reasonable and a good drinks list with courteous staff. A very nice place in a small town,
Always fabulous. Dine here regularly and always impressed. Coming from a background in hospitality we are very picky on service and food and O'Neills has never disappointed.
YUM. The biggest problem I have with Oneills is deciding what to have. We are regulars at the amazing $20 lunch special and we are never disappointed. The menu choices are so delicious that its impossible to choose, and as some of my friends are vegetarian and gluten intolerant they love that Oneills has lots of great options for them too. The atmosphere is cosy and very welcoming and the staff are always so attentive and happy, they always have time for a friendly chat even when they are fully booked (which seems to be almost always, Good Sign!) Its by far our favourite restaurant in town, highly recommended but make sure you book so you wont be disappointed!
O'Neills is a hot favourite amongst my friends and family.You can't go wrong with the $20 lunch special which includes one of their vast lunch options and beverage of your choice whether it be wine, coffee or soft drink. The staff and atmosphere is second to none and unlike any other restaurant in Sale. Would highly recommend!
Not good for the waste line!!!!!!. Since O'Neills opened their door a couple of years ago I have been a regular, I love the atmosphere and the friendliness provided by David and his staff. Nothing is ever too much trouble. If I am having a moment in my life when the scales are reaching a new limit, I call ahead and organise a weight watching meal, which is discreetly served to the table. Our family has celebrated many a special occasion and we have never left being disappointed. Having lived in Sale for many years friends from Melbourne will often call and ask where is a good place to eat "O'Neills" is always number one on the list.

topped off what was already a great evening. The service was excellent with no one on our table

Just No Competition. My family and I are regular diners at O'neills and we keep going back simply because of the food, wine and service. The pricing for the meals is very reasonable considering the quality of the food is outstanding. I love the fact that they always have vegetarian and gluten free options on the menu for entree, main and dessert. The waiting staff are very friendly and attentive. There is no other place in Sale who provides better service than this. Highly recommended!!
Best Place in Sale to eat!!!. Have been dining at O'Neills since it opened its doors 2 1/2 years ago and have had nothing but great food, friendly staff and fantastic service!! You get value for your money with the generous meal sizes (can never fit in more than 2 courses) and the wines are very reasonably priced. The owners and the staff have always been very friendly and accomodating when it comes to requests (have had several birthdays party's there).

One of the top restaurants in Sale. Delicious meals, great service and a nice wine list and wine glasses. We have ate numerous meals at Oneills since moving to Sale. It’s the place we go for special occasions. I’d highly recommend it!
Amazing food, service and wine list! My husband and I have visited O’Neils a number of times and loved it. From the wonderful wine menu (and Riedel glassware) to the delicious food and brilliant customer service, I’d highly recommend this venue. PS: They make the best espresso martini’s we’ve ever tried!

I'm surprised to have found this place in Sale. The service was good, food was prepared well and plated very nicely. I got a king fish which I didn't like very much, it's more to do with the fish rather than how it was prepared.
This place was superb! They made food combinations that blew us away, it will have us back there again, even though its over 2 hours from us.
And when we found the volume of the surrounding tables had risen, and couldn't hear each other well & we asked to move tables, we were accommodated with pleasure. The waitresses were lovely, engaging, helpful, and professional.

The service and staff at this restaurant are really fantastic. The ambience is lovely, and I really loved the use of space in the modified living areas. Unfortunately, some courses were a great hit but some were a bit of a miss. Beautiful entrees - our table had the scallops, pork hock and soup. The duck main was great, but the lamb gnocci was very heavily salted (for which we received a 25% discount on those meals), and the one vegetarian option, a cauliflower steak, was sold to a vegetarian by the waiter with, "The chef doesn't like doing that one because it's too easy". As a vegetarian, I was a bit disappointed that there wasn't more effort or thought put into something that should have been just as good as any other main on the menu. Dessert was really lovely as well.
Overall, the experience was positive, but dampened slightly by the main course. We will go back when the seasonal menu changes and see what is on offer!
