Ahhhh....Gold Leaf, Springvale. It’s your typical Chinese restaurant that has been around since the dawn of time. It's a bit old, it's a bit tacky, it's a bit rude. Their yumcha is standard fare but the suckling pig (which requires preordering) is the highlight.

I ordered a half serve for a special occasion. It was done to perfection and it was wolfed down very quickly. I really should have asked for a full serve....regrets! Won’t make that critical error again.

Was extremely busy when I came today (so luckily we had made a booking). Sometimes it takes a while for the different foods to come around, as we had to ask for a specific dish a few times. Otherwise the food was good although I cant quite differentiate the taste between the filling of the dumplings (they all taste pretty similar to me). The egg tart and mango pudding was good!! Also tried the deep fried ice cream for the first time here and unfortunately the exterior didnt taste as “fried” or as crunchy as I would’ve hoped. Otherwise it was a filling lunch and satisfied my dim sum cravings.

I’ve been to a lot of places but this place will always be my go to place for yumcha. I believe it is expected that customer service is not always the best at these kind of restaurants but expect the food to be great.
The variety of the steamed, fried and dessert dishes is really good. You can order a la cart if you have certain dietary requirements as well.
Huge space but always busy on weekends so make sure to book beforehand.

Decent yum cha in Springvale. They have a good variety and flavours are always consistent. Service is a bit rocky. I think it has become better over the years though.

One of the best chinese food in Melbourne, I went here for lunch and I found the best yum cha here, fast service, good quality of food that I couldn’t find in CBD.
Highly recommended, if you like yum cha.

I dont know what it is about Gold leaf that I just love so much. When I come to Springvale it is either Vietnamese or yum cha at Gold Leaf , the food has always been consistent and the trolleys come in a timely manner so we are never left starving for long periods at a time

Loved this place. Everything a good yum cha place should be... big, bustling, lots of trolleys whizzing past, juicy dumplings and great staff. Waiters went out of their way to find things we wanted and were very friendly.

Basing on dinner sessions, the restaurant is usually a quarter to a third full (whereas their lunch sessions seems packed constantly). They have a few different menus, an English menu which is a lot more westernised (i.e. lemon chicken, black bean beef) and their Chinese menu had the more traditional dishes (which they don't seem to have any in English unless they had a separate version). I've tried dishes from both menus and they seemed to do them very well; I've been there a few times and I've tried a few different mains, banquets and desserts and they've all been decent. The ambiance is interesting; I took my western friends there and they thought it looked tacky whereas my asian friends didn't mind. Their ambiance is very blight, glitzy and resembles interiors similar to those in China/Hong Kong from the late 80s-90s (they've probably kept the interior design the way for some time as it's design similar to other Gold Leaf locations). Their service seemed very attentive (although they don't get busy during dinner sessions). First impressions, staff don't smile often however if you speak with them, they are happy to have a chat and assist.

Seriously the best Yum Cha place in Melbourne.

Gotta admit that there’s just something charming about this place with loads of old ladies pushing food carts around and offering you dishes in Chinese. I absolutely adore this place as my gf and I go here at least twice a month. Food is good, chicken feet is a must-try. Other than that probably they do pretty well-rounded Yum Cha dishes. Services can be a bit hectic when it’s the weekend lunches but certainly not something too unbearable.

My verdict: 5/5 for Yum Cha. 3.5/5 for service. 4/5 for prices.

Gold Leaf is my go-to yum cha restaurant! My favourites are the Taro dumpling, steamed beancurd skin roll with pork and shrimp, century egg and pork congee.. just to name a few.
The fried taro dumpling has a crispy and delicate outer shell which gives a pleasant textural contrast to the inner moist fillings of mashed taro, mushroom and pork..delicious!
Can get a bit hectic on the weekends especially, so be sure to make a booking.

One of the older outlets for the Gold Least franchise; possibly the first one?

Atmosphere: bustling

Decor: antiquey Canto restaurant

Service: quite good.

Food: excellent. Good technique, great flavour and all dishes except the woo tau gawk (fried taro dumpling) were served at the right temperature.

Verdict: great. If you are in the area you should go here!

We come here regularly as a family for yum Cha. It's great because you can always get a seat quickly and the food is pretty good. My grand parents also love to come here to get their roast.

Massive yum cha restaurant on the second floor of the Springvale shopping centre - we came an hour before closing so couldn't fully appreciate a full house but it's not hard to imagine how busy it'll be on a weekend. Staff were very professional, not the most attentive but service was alright. Given that we arrived quite late, there weren't many trolleys going around and so we had to order food from the kitchen. Their steamed dumplings are very good - would recommend the vegetarian ones! Can't comment on the dessert since we didn't try any. I would recommend coming before 2pm since they don't make any more dishes unless you order specially. The plates do add up though - we had about 6 or 7 plates to share between the two of us which came to around $50+ dollars.

This place offers some good ol' fashioned yum cha. The hargow is cooked to perfection with a good amount of filing, the Phoenix claws are doused in fantastically flavourful sauce, and the egg tarts are flaky and crispy to perfection. What more can you ask for? A great place to take the fam (don't forget to make a reservation, though!)

Liked the sze chuan beef and the Singapore were good. Steamed barramundi was also good too. Unfortunately not as friendly for certain food intolerances like gluten free. But other than that, very happy with service and food.

Never a dull moment eating at Gold Leaf, there's chaos clattering of plates and tea cups and adorable trolley ladies shouting out goods they have on offer. Like most places in Springvale don't expect fancy service but the food is delicious and the variety of dumplings is plentiful. Everything ranging from chicken feet to spring rolls for the less adventurous. Weekends are super busy, so do yourself a favour and book in advance or be prepared to wait. When we go we always order Chinese donuts wrapped in silky rice steamed rice noodle sheets, it's dipped in a sweet soy and is sinfully unctuous.

Gold Leaf (Springvale) is my go-to yum cha restaurant. I've been coming here ever since I was a child and I must say that their flavours have managed to remain the same over the years. Staff are quick on their feet as soon as you sit down, but of course there is room for improvement when it comes to their customer service. You may also want to book ahead if you want a table during public holidays, otherwise you will have to wait in line for half an hour or even risk not getting a table at all.

This place almost needs two reviews as its yum Cha offering is quite different from the a la carte menu.

Yum Cha is ok, not particularly great and not the best in Springvale. There is a good variety and lots of carts on weekends, with all the yum Cha favourites and a good number of newer dishes. If dishes are fresh they are usually very good but anything that has been doing the rounds for a while tends to be a bit mediocre. There is a certain sameness to a lot of dishes and a tendency towards the bland. Don't let this put you off though- it's well worth a visit.

A la carte for dinner is great. Excellent and innovative food as well as old favourites. Can particularly recommend the set menu/banquets- great value and a nice assortment of dishes.

I love this place, so much activity and choice of food. Love the atmosphere and will definitely we will be coming back.

I recently went, with three young children under ten, even though we spent over, $25.00 on soft drinks, they still though it wise to charge me another eight dollars, $8.00, for green tea for me, I guess they are not making enough money. Next time I will be going through the bill with a fine sharpened pencil.

EST! EST! EST! (from the marking of the German vallet in Montefiascone, Italy in 1200).I did not frequent this place for a long while, after it decayed in yum cha quality, but today I felt as giving it a further try. I was happily surprised: the food was fresh and excellently prepared, the service very efficient if a little inpersonal (what do you expect for a staff serving 350 people?) and certainly well organised. THIS IS ONE OF THE VERY FEW PLACES IN MELBOURNE STILL OFFERING REAL YUM CHA, NOT JUST DIM SUM. I had really fresh and perfectly fried white bait, not oily at all, beef tripe nicely cooked to soft but not slughish, yummy chicken feet and a beautiful serve of eel cooked in a tasty sauce. As a retired chef, I can vouch for today's experience. Extra bonus: BYO at $3 a bottle! Gold Leaf staff, I hope you will keep your standards. If so I will be back very often.

One of the better yum cha places in the area. My partner really likes the chinese broccoli. However there was a time I found a black hair in my beef tendons. Told a waiter and was met with the most unconvincing "its part of the tendon". It took great effort to not only explain tendons don't have hair on them, and that I also don't want to eat the hair. Admittedly I have been back multiple times since.

The service was extremely fast. As soon as my family and I were seated down, the servers came in all sorts of directions with their trolleys full of various yum cha dishes. A few of the memorable dishes were the eggplant with minced prawns and pork, hargow, shao mai and the vegetable dumplings.

I don't normally write reviews, but I felt the gold leaf deserves one.
I take my work team to the Gold Leaf for yumcha about once a month.
I have been to many yumcha restarants around melbourne.
And without a doubt this is the best one for value, variety, and quality of the meals.
Great atmosphere, freindly staff, really authentic.
Very busy, but it has to be.
We all really look forward to going.
Happy return customer!

If you go to yum cha occasionally then you may find that all their dumplings tastes the same and there's nothing more to it than just prawns, minced meat or seafood stuffing. This place was good. Food was served hot and fresh and I believe that it's cheaper than other gold leaf chains. Wasn't too happy with their chicken feet because there wasn't enough black bean sauce. Overall good for some traditional family Cha.

I like Gold Leaf, and have been a loyal and frequent customer for years.
I come to the Springvale outlet often, as a precursor to some grocery shopping at the market downstairs.
It has lovely yumcha, served the traditional way of waitstaff pushing carts and trolleys of food around, whilst giving you the opportunity to make individual ala carte orders if you so wish.
Well worth a try, and certainly one of the better Chinese restaurants in the area.

Update: Came for dinner. Great tasting food and big portions compared to other similar places with friendly staff. However the menu is in Chinese or Vietnamese. I can only read English but i don't want a special English menu. Please add English to your main menu. Prices were within range of similar restaurants.

Have only been here for takeaway HK bbq and have to say it is one of the best places for HK bbq. Love the chilli sauce and get a good portion.

The yum cha is great here, but as with all other places if the head chef leaves or goes on holidays the quality of the food goes south. If they had a bad day at the horses, it can also have an impact of the food ;-) Crazy busy on weekends, make sure you book ahead. Even if you book, be prepared to wade past the hoards lining up outside to be guided to your table.

I found this Gold Leaf a lot better then the Burwood one because the staff were a lot more helpful and I only needed to ask for the Chinese broccoli once and it came out hot. I also found the dumplings hotter at this Gold Leaf. My only complaints are that the crispy pork was cold but I think it was meant to be that way and it had a glacé cherry which was strange. I also didn't see the money bags which they have at Burwood.

I've come here since I was a little kid (over 15 years now), the place is an iconic establishment in Springvale. The service here is above par considering it's an Asian venue which normally may get a bad rep for service.
We come here for both Yum Cha and Dinner on special occasions. The best time to come for Yum Cha is at the start/busy period but make sure to make a booking in advance. This is because the food is fresh and on a high turnover. My favourites are the Prawn dumplings, Prawn wrapped with rice noodle and the beef tripe (Niu Bai Ye).
There is a very large selection of Seafood for dinner, we normally get the oyster and/or Mudcrab or Lobster. This though, you may find to be the opposite end of the spectrum to cheap Asian eats. Dinners here can be more then 60+ a head if you decide to venture down to Asian fine dining. This is very different to what Chinese people eat everyday which is generally thought to be cheap. It might not be considered expensive for these special occasions when you want to 'save face' which might be hard to understand if you're unfamiliar with the culture.

Good standard yum cha fare, can get really crowded and chaotic at peak times. Dinner not so great though..... the a la carte items we had we're wasabi prawns, xo sauce croc and some standard stir fries. Unfortunately all came with way too much cornstarch, and when cooled on the table, just became sticky and blobby

Not a huge variety of yumcha but my favorite is the suckling pig, chicken feet and salted egg congee. Must go early for suckling pig as its popular. Some yum cha items can be a hit or miss. Avoid shanghai pork mini buns.

We recently decided to try the $39 peking duck special, and I have to say I'm pleasantly surprised by the quality. Sure the knife skills by the waiters are poor at best, but the flavour of the duck is very good. The pancakes however are a bit thick. But the 2nd course beanshoots stirfry is better than Old Kingdom. Overall taking into consideration of the whole package of in terms of value for money I would come here occasionally for the duck.

My Yum Cha destination! I used to dine at Burwood branch often but this Gold Leaf is better in many ways such as more spacious dining room or even better service. Moreover, I can walk down to get me some more takeout food on the ground floor. Great place to dine. Highly recommended. P.S. The service could be inattentive and unfriendly sometimes on weekend lunches because they are so busy. Please, be aware of that.

Service is okay but one of the guys (attached photo) is very good and helpful. Because of the trolley dim sum is slow today, we just tell him directly what we want, he go help us put in order and come out about 5-7mins. Maybe running out of staff, a lot yum cha not come out as fast as usual. Some of them told us, only one chef who work for certain of task( example fried dishes or steam dishes) overall the food still good as usual. Always our yum cha places ❤️

We were looking for somewhere to eat for the night after having a couple of bad experiences and remembered the old faithful Golden Leaf Chinese Restaurant after driving past the Springvale one. The food’s good quality with plenty of variety and fresh live cray, barra and crab to choose from if that takes your fancy, a good variety of drinks, it’s open till late. The service is professional and courteous, there’s not really anything to dislike about it, I’m going to have to keep it in what’s left of my memory bank. I’d happily recommend it.

i normally have yum cha on the weekends with family here but had it on a Monday. it doesn't get as chaotic as it does on the weekend but enough to fill half the restaurant (other part was blocked) which I didn't mind the change of scenery. food is always quality and service is as abrupt and fast paced as you would expect. staff are still courteous and helpful despite the rough accents and lack of smile. we/they don't fool around with food as that's what everyone is here for. I always come back for more.

Great food and service. I have been here many many times both for dinner and yum cha. Food is authentic, quick and well priced - just the way Chinese food should be. If only the live seafood was a little more reasonably priced then that would make it perfect!
