Review Walrus Chinese Restaurant - Springvale

JM F
This nondescript restaurant serves no frills delicious Canto style food. Service is on point, popular place so best to book or arrive early. Soup and dessert were complementary. Prices may seem high for the area but... the food! Both street and paid parking available in the vicinity

It was one of those late evening late minute dash for food for us and since we were near Springvale, we decide to give this restaurant a go. Pleasantly surprised with their service. Started off well with a warm comforting complementary soup (see photo) while the chef prepared our 2dishes. For a party of 3, we ordered the spicy chicken ribs and a mixed vegetable with tofu. (See photos). Both are promptly served right after we finished our soup. At the end of a filling dinner, we were treated with a red bean dessert. Will go back again with a larger group and try more dishes!

Such attentive service, such flavourful food. Crab Noodle was the best I've had, here. Deep fried ice cream was lit up and had a nice batter great to finish off our meal.

Very delicious, especially the fried chicken with salted egg, the fried rice and roasted duck tasted delicious, overall a good place to have dinner if you go earlier, it gets pretty packed quickly

We had chicken ribs & veg stir fried for lunch, portion is really big 2 of us can not finish. The chicken ribs are the best! Highly recommended.

had a great dinner here with some foodie friends. pick of the night was the Kang Kong in fermented beancurd sauce which I really loved, and the salt and pepper eel which was made with live eel (they have tanks, and seafood is always best fresh). XO pippies were also outstanding as was the accompanying dough fritter youtiao. roast meat selection was good, although the pipa duck here isn't as good as Chopsticks Delight (that IMO is the best in Melbourne). deep fried stuffed intestines was yummy!

Good reliable Cantonese food. I always go for the crocodile fry with ginger and spring onions. So nice. Reasonable prices. Reasonable range of beers.

We had Nice CNY Dinner, food was nice, service is great!

Food:4, If you are planning to go on Saturday night, make sure you book them. Their Seafood is a must there, pipis and fried donuts, Ginger and spring onion crab (do yourself a favor, add 1 more noodle, if u have more than 4 person and order less rice.), roast pork and duck.. Etc. Feel free to throw in their Salted egg fried chicken ribs and bean sprots leave in garlic, snow peas with fish fillets..all so good. If you want to i press your Parents i law or a friend from oversea, do come here. Thats what we did, and we all left smiling.

Best restaurant in Springvale. Always order the same dishes, duck salad, chicken with spicy salt and garlic, pipis with Chinese donut, Mongolian beef, barramundi with soy sauce!

3 stars ⭐️ went with a couple of friends. Love the whole free soup thing. Service was a bit absent-minded but always sincere.

Jellyfish w pork hock was ok.

Had a crab and for about $90ish there wasn’t much meat or roe. A bit disappointed to be honest, as I heard great things about the crab here.

The BBQ meats are good, the duck was the best and served slightly warm. Chicken was slightly on the cooler side but still delish. The char siu was dry though.

The eggplant clay pot was so oily that I had one bite and wanted to stop. We all pretty much left the eggplant clay pot alone after that

The spot that most Cantonese families will visit and with good cause. For the food.
Decor and ambience although lacking is nostalgic of many 1980’s hole in a wall Chinese restaurants. Again, I cannot stress enough that we are here for food.
Large portions of authentic Cantonese cuisine. What is there not to love?
Vicnifer's Food Reviews
Thanks for the meal!

Ordered honey prawns and combination seafood clay pot.

I am abit of a regular here. For special occasions like to come in for the honey prawns. The prawns are succulent, battered and fried quite nicely. The seafood clay pot has your classic oyster sauce flavour with a good combination of seafood and vegetables.

I've been coming here forever for banquet style dinners.
Solid option for Chinese Cantonese cuisine with various meats cooked 100 different ways.
My go-tos:
* snow pea shoots cooked with garlic sauce - only when in season. The shoots are nice alternative to typical veggies like cabbage.
* salt & pepper chicken ribs - also good with salted egg yolk. There's a thin bone in the middle, but they're batter is crispy and delicious.
* Roast meats - can't go wrong with a roast duck or crispy roast pork.
Service is no-frills come as you are, which is fine for this kind of eatery.

Been coming here for a long time now and the food is still as good as ever! The must orders for us is the salted egg yolk chicken ribs and sweet and sour pork! We also love the xo clams and the crab noodles! We recently tried the spring onion and ginger egg noodles with prawns and they were delicious too!

My super picky folks will only visit one restaurant when they want good Chinese food, this is it. That really says it all.

The menu is fairly Cantonese/Guangdong. There is a huge menu but we have never been disappointed in any of the dishes whether it be meat, fish, shellfish, rice, noodles, veg etc. Walrus Chinese Restaurant is a must visit if you want good Chinese food around the South East

Came here on a weekend and the place is kind of busy. Prompt service and the staff are attentive. Order the roast duck that was chopped into pieces、well glazed and no gamy taste. The crispy noodles are great and flavoursome.

We’ve been here a few times and their service is always friendly, efficient and quick. Food comes out quickly and is always delicious. We love their fried rice as it is not dry like other restaurants. This place is always busy with a great atmosphere.

This place is awesome. Always super busy due to its authentic cuisine in the heart of Springvale. The food here is great - especially the seafood dishes. The standout of my meal was a fresh ocean trout cooked in ginger and shallots! Service can be a bit lacking due to the busy-ness, but the food is fantastic and reasonably priced.

I noticed as me and my partner were seated, the waitress was thoughtful in that she went to get an English menu for my partner. Service overall was good, it was never like you couldn't get someone's attention.
We opted for two sharing dishes with steamed rice - 1. king prawns with chinese muchroom and veggie and 2. Steamed whole founder with ginger and spring onion. We were able to finish all the food but felt very full. These two dishes will not suit those preferring very flavoursome food as it's was more plain but focus on natural flavours, very much the goodness of Cantonese cuisine.
CRAB AND NOODLES!!!!! YUMMMM

Not cheap at $80 for a crab, but it was 2.5kg and we had leftovers for the next day. The meat itself was really fresh and sweet. Great quality for such a no- frills restaurant in Springvale. I'm sure we'd be paying double that anywhere else.

We also ordered the stir fried tofu and veggies which was very well- cooked; the snow peas still had a great crunch and everything was nice and green.

Can't wait to go back for those salted egg chicken ribs!
Willtravelforfood17
Prices are cheap, food is better than average. We ordered crab stir fried in ginger and spring onion with noodles. The quality of the crab was lacking (the meat was powdery) but the sauce was tasty and they were generous with the noodles.

Great place to go to for Chinese. Great fried rice. Honey chicken, beef black bean sauce are well done. Delicious soup. Friendly staff. Highly recommend this place

Stay away from this restaurant. We ordered lobster and crab noodle. The waitress came and told us the weight of both but when we got our bill, we were charged DOUBLE the weight of the lobster and crab. Their explanation was that they charge for noodles, sauce, labour etc and that all gets calculated into their price when they charge for the weight. They charge over $100 for half a pound of lobster, so our bill was in excess of over $700. The bill was a big joke to us. The bill added up to over a $1000. We asked for a tax invoice and we were told that they don’t have an option and won’t be able to print anything out for us. This restaurant is a major scam and rip off, the food was awful, the service was RUDE and the people that work here speak in their own language about you while standing right in front of you while pointing their fingers at you too! Don’t ever bring your friends and family to this restaurant. We went in a group of 6 and will NEVER recommend this, this restaurant is a JOKE!

Walrus is one of the better places for traditional Cantonese food in the Springvale area. You will most likely be able to walk in during lunch hours and get a table however during dinner hours on weekends, the place fills up quickly. Their lunch menu is reasonably priced however their dinner menu is perhaps more expensive in comparison to its competitors in the area. My recommendations from the dinner menu is the beancurd/tofu stuff with prawns which they have never gotten wrong (with me). They are consistent with their dishes and have had the same menu for many years. The environment is very unconsidered and casual however customers come for the food. Service is decent, not overly friendly yet get the orders done and it's a decent place for bigger groups.
Mad Dawg
We entered this place for dinner on a busy Sunday evening. We were started off with herbal soup before we ordered. We ordered xo steamed oysters, crocodile meat with ginger, salted egg yolk soft shell crab, and seafood hot pot. The oysters were decently sized with good flavour. The crocodile meat was surprisingly tender without any hint of odor. The soft shell crab had a crunchy coating and generous servings of salted egg yolk. I felt the seafood hotpot was under seasoned. Just as a side note, the salted egg was off the menu so there is a small surcharge.
Much Ado About Food
Walrus is well-known for their seafood - so, seafood we ordered!

We often come here for family dinners and celebrations. It's one of our favourite places to eat.

This time around, we came to have a family dinner for Chinese New Year and we ordered two mud crabs with noodles: one with spring onion and ginger and the other with XO sauce.

We also ordered some abalone in the shell and oysters - we opted for ginger, XO, and garlic to go with these.

Now, I am not a huge fan of ginger (in fact, it makes me gag) so I only ate the non-ginger versions of each dish and they were amazing. Of particular note, the garlic oysters were top notch and I would eat a thousand of those and I'm not usually one to go out of my way for oysters!

The mud crab was delicious, as per usual, and the sauce was great and plentiful through the noodles. I often find some restaurants are quite stingy with their sauce in crab noodle dishes, but this was not!

We also ordered the sweet and sour pork, which is a staple for us and we always have, as well as a beef and Chinese broccoli stir fry. Also, pretty good. However, the seafood definitely steals the show. If you ever visit Walrus - you need to order seafood dishes. It's a bit pricey but the quality of the food is well worth it.

The negative things about this place is that when it's busy, like it was for us tonight, it's very difficult to get any service. We had a booking for 7.30pm and were seated but no one came to take our order until 8pm and this was with us flagging down staff as they walked past until one actually stopped to take our order - the others just nodded to acknowledge us, but didn't come back due to being so busy with other tables.

It is also very cramped, although the space is quite large, they fill it to the brim. It was very hard for us to get a pram in and out! Felt a little bad that we had to interrupt and ask people to stand up to create space for us to get through. Overall, the atmosphere is pretty good. It can get quite loud, though, because it's a lot of people in the one place and everyone is talking over everyone else so people tend to speak louder to get heard.

The good things are that you get complimentary lotus and chicken soup entrée and for dessert they provide a sweet red bean soup and fresh fruit. Also, EFTPOS! It's a rare occurrence for restaurants in Springvale - most places only accept cash. I think they might have a 10% surcharge for card, though.

Roast pork was great, as was the duck. Loved the freshness of the soft shell crab. King prawns in salty egg yolk were the biggest hit of the night. Will definitely be back!

My first time here and I was disappointed with the quality and quantity of food. Food was also over-priced. We ordered the claypot/beancurd seafood. Not many pieces of seafood, fish was pasty and there was more beancurd than seafood. Came to payment, the staff and waitress insisted that we had to pay $15 on top of the price for a claypot seafood dish. Why $15 extra - because they insisted that we wanted Japanese beancurd. Please...we just wanted a claypot/beancurd dish. Waitress did not say that we had to pay extra for Japanese beancurd. We were just whacked when it came to payment. Will never be coming back to this place.

I went there for my nephew's birthday, while walking we observed beautiful windows with dazzling lights behind them I would give the design a 4/5 because of the tight spaced narrow door. But we weren't focusing on the view of the restaurant we were there for the food (Especially the popular: Steamed fish with ginger and shallots and my all time favorite the mud crab noodles with ginger & shallots.)So we ordered our food the: Steamed fish with ginger and shallots, the mud crab noodles with ginger & shallots, Black pepper beef, Vermicelli hotpot with prawn in crab sauce, salt and pepper ribs and steamed rice. The service was spot on a 5/5.In an instant, the food came out...Firstly, the black pepper beef & a bucket of steamed rice, the sauce was consistent and gave the meat a juicy vibe & matched with the rice and made it easier to digest, the meat was very tender.Secondly, The Vermicelli hot pot in addition to the salt and pepper ribs. The vermicelli with the crab sauce bonded with each other, it made the noodles nice and moist. The prawns were very juicy. The salt pepper ribs were succulent and the crunchy coating around the interior where the meat was just made it even tastier.Thirdly, the mud crab noodles with ginger & shallots came out. The noodles and the crab were palatable they were so far the best I've ever had, I would rate this INFINITY/10, we even thought of asking for another one!Lastly, was the Steamed fish with ginger and shallots. The fish was mind blowing, it had light soy sauce soaking the fish with astoundingly good flavor with the ginger and shallots that enriched the soy sauce's flavor and texture, this bonded as one & made the perfect appetizer and a perfect end to the day.For dessert, they brought out a platter of fruit, a Vietnamese Chè (served hot) and last but not least a birthday cake with 13 candles. We devoured the food and went home if I could rate this I would give it an honest ∞/5. The worst occurrence at the restaurant was that we forgot to take some photos to remember our wonderful day at the restaurant.

We heard that the seafood is good here. That was our mistake - not ordering what they are known for. We had salted fish chicken fried rice and half a roast duck. The roast duck was too oily and skin not crispy enough.. Very salty too. Fried rice was much better, with a good dose of ginger.

Ratio Decidendi: Walrus is a family favourite. Despite the number of times we’ve been here, the order is always the same. Salt & pepper chicken ribs is always a given – they will be some of the best you will try in Melbourne. Satisfyingly crunchy batter that’s perfectly seasoned hasn’t come at the expense of overcooking the protein within.

This is definitely a highly recommended place for authentic asian cuisine that’s packed with flavour at decent prices and generous portions. My go to place for crab noodles. Other favourites are the spicy salt pork ribs, the chicken ribs in salty egg yolk, the clams in XO sauce, roast duck, pork spare ribs with Peking sauce, abalone and mushroom and T-bone steak in black pepper sauce. Always always packed, so booking is a must. Decor isn’t anything fancy or special but that’s irrelevant as most aren’t there for the atmosphere but for the great food. Floor staff are always attentive and quick to respond, especially appreciated despite it being always so busy and full of action.

On appearance, it doesn't look anything special but boy is the food amazing! This is my go to place crab; mind you I'm a creature of habit so when I'm here only order the same thing. Crab with ginger and shallots with 2 x noodles, water spinach with garlic and salt and pepper battered Japanese tofu. Their menu is endless but those are my definite recommendations. So much flavour and so delish! Just be mind of crab price when not in season, it can be super exxy! But worth it if you are feeling decadent!
Justin
Ambience is what you would expect from a Chinese restaurant. Service is really good and good is alway fresh and plentiful. The standouts are the fresh barramundi and chicken in duck egg.

Absolutely beautiful. The food was just amazing especially the spicy fries chicken ribs, crunchy, succulent and perfectly seasoned!!!!!!!!!!!!

For some silly reason, I've always chosen to eat somewhere else when in Springvale. Walrus turns out to be a very good Cantonese BBQ restaurant.

We got the complimentary soup. Very traditional pork bone broth with lotus root and dried octopus.

The serve of Congee was so large we had to take some home.

Service was nice and friendly too. It was a little step up from what you normally get. Definately will make a return visit. Great value too.

One of the best places to go for authentic Chinese cuisines, the menu has a broad variety of choices. The staff are good, food was lovely, Will definitely recommend this place.

I think the food is just average compare to its price, the location is good with car park right next to it, service is just normal. Xo Pipip is nicer than other place

LIT!: a big venue great for talking amongst a group with decent pricing. The food was also lit!

NOT SO LIT: atmosphere and decor was okay.
Thanks for having us!

Favourites are their crab noodles!!! but be weary... they do pack on the msg!!! so ask them to either not use or minimise use. It still tastes pretty darn good.

Don't freak out when u see ur receipt / bill. the weight is in "KGs" as opposed to pounds. They can't seem to change this on their register. :)

Another fav here is the XO pippies!!
Rlt
Definitely one of the better Asian restaurants local to springvale. A good spot for families to eat as their dishes range is amazing. Always something new to try. The garlic chicken spareribs is a must try.

Came here with high expectations as I had the impressions from many reviews that its worth trying.
Yes portion is big and truly amazing service provided. However, the food have some taste problem.
First complimentary, soup was not nice, i can see big chicken feet (so scary) and the other veggie (unsure what they are called). Soup was not tasty and makes your appetite down.
I tried the stuff tofu. Oh come one. supper inn is much better although Walrus has crispy tofu but missed the taste.
Sweet sour pork is also not very satisfying.
Crab was a bit off the taste. Its fish smell kind of and very oily.
Chill is just okay.
Thank you for reading my honest opinion.
Overall, supper inn is so much better and cheaper.

Worlds best chicken .. spicy chicken ribs are amazing. We have tried to order similar at a lot of places but never the same. 10/10 walrus! 😊
Mummy+Me Eats
Great place to come with a large group so you can have a bit of everything and better on the pocket. This is a typical place for lots of families to have dinner. Also typical down to the tacky menu items on the wall, complimentary starter soup and dessert (oranges or red bean dessert).

Our group usually come here for their ginger & shallots crab noodle, silken Japanese tofu, spicy salt chicken ribs (or salted egg version), roast duck and chinese brocolli with oyster sauce. And lots and lots of that chilli oil! We are pretty stuffed afterwards. P.S. Skip the dessert, go down the road to Cultural Commons or Dessert Story if you still want a sweet treat.

One of the places in the area where it is best to book particularly for 4 or more.

SERVICE: 3/5

FOOD: 4/5

DECOR & AMBIENCE: 2.5/5

KID FRIENDLY: Yes

Reserved on Saturday night and still had to wait around 20 mins ,however the food was really good,Blackbean beef was extremely good and will go back for more. The serves of bbq porkbelly were a little on the small side same as salt pepper Calamari however quality was there so not overly fussed.A little confusing was the steamed rice as past reviews suggested they serve you but we helped ourself from rice bucket next to table ,they were busy though !! Overall Chinese in my area doesnt come close to this place (worth a visit!!)
Suburb Review
Tasty Chinese food, really good salt n pepper calamari and pipi's in xo sauce with chinese donuts. But as WARNED by other zomato reviews CHECK YOUR RECEIPTS. The staff are incompetent and overcharged us for something they didn't even give, they gave it to the next table believe it or not. Don't know if they actually forgot or if they were told to by the boss, may be a trick. But pleasseeee double check the bill. Other than that, great food! Will be back :)
Scoops
Late Saturday night dinner for 4. Looks like we missed the rush. Complimentary soup to start whilst we pondered over the menu. Decided on crab with ginger & spring onion, sweet & sour pork, and snow pea shoots with dried scallops. All 3 dishes were delicious. Generous portions. We asked for 3 boxes to pack the leftovers from each dish. Complimentary red bean soup dessert, typical of Chinese restaurants. Staff were attentive. This place is one of the best restaurant for crabs in Melbourne!!! We've been going there for many years now and will continue to do so.
Tony
Great Chinese food in the far South-Eastern suburbs.

Although it's rather pricey considering the other restaurants in the area, Walrus serves up great dishes including a fantastic crab noodle dish. They also (like another reviewer has said) have excellent chilli oil.
Cottonball♡
We always go there for some authetic cantanese dishes, steamed fish always made to perfection. Complemetry before and aftermeal soup is always a bonus !
Foodychick
I come here every time for their tamarind crab and OMG it is so yummy ! My friends and I often go here for the crab and we usually don't talk because we're too into eating the crab. I wouldn't say this is the cheapest Asian restaurant to eat at but the food is good overall. You get complimentary house soup at the beginning and they usually ask you if you want complimentary dessert.
Mmmsedap
I enjoy going to Walrus for a meal of Chinese food. Unlike many other Chinese restaurants I've been to, I didn't feel like a poor peasant because I didn't order the $500 banquet or the $300 worth of crab. With the influx of many wealthy diners, a lot of Chinese restaurants are out for money by offering live seafood and expensive banquets as obviously they are the most profitable. I always get the feeling that they would much prefer high spending diners than ordinary people like me who don't particularly want to blow hundreds of dollars on a Chinese dinner. At Walrus there is no such pressure. Order what you want, and the service and attitude is the same. I would suggest anything fried is good here. The fried prawns with the salty egg yolk is in a class of its own. The chicken ribs and flounder are also very memorable. Would definitely return.
Richard Alexander
Good service. Prolly this is my first experience dining in a chinese restaurant which serves free clear soup and free black sticky rice dessert. We had roast pork and deep fried calamary.
Andrianus William
Recommended for a chinese restaurant, well service even though for student its a bit expensive but its worth it. I love the bbq pork and crispy pork here as well the calamari (I think need more seasoning for salt and pepper calamari). Start with complimentary soup its good for cold weather like today, they pour the soup and serve the rice to customer where usually in other chinese restaurant we serve our own rice. At the end they also give complimentary dessert its a hot dessert I don't know the name maybe like traditional dessert in china. Overall I love the service and food here. I probably recommend this to my friends and colleagues
Julian B Ho
Possibly the only Chinese restaurant that has the best chilli oil. Majority of the times I've been there is the presence of the wok-breath in the dishes I've ordered so it's a tick in consistency of the cooking. Serving sizes are also pretty generous considering most places are now downsizing. My only gripe is some dishes, i.e. Hokkien Fried Rice has jumped up in price.
Meng Ngo
Been too many times.
Best X.O sauce in victoria!
I love the x.o crab n Oyster!
Salt n pepper very nice
Best BBQ Duck n Pig .
Price pretty good
Service good !!!!

I have been to the Walrus Seafood Restaurant a couple of times. It is the sort of place you associate with reasonably executed Chinese food at reasonable prices and with decent serving sizes. So I was a bit disappointed this time around after a year long hiatus, that the serving sizes had diminished markedly. The food was not as tasty as I remembered.

Close your eyes when you walk in. This is your classic dirty Chinese restaurant; white linen tables, walls were painted in 1980's and you get your little triangle orange serviette. Having said that, the crab is fab. Ginger and spring onion or the deep fried chilli will make sitting in unpleasant surroundings, incredibly pleasant. Other dishes are bit of a hit and miss, occasionally face-squirmingly too salty, but otherwise I quite enjoyed this place.
Matthewgtam
Walrus is the best Chinese Restaurant ever. I see a lot of people criticising Walrus for being overpriced. I think the majority of the criticisms are coming from non Chinese people who don't know what to order. This is an authentic Chinese Restaurant you don't order fried rice, lemon chicken or spring rolls. You order traditional Cantonese food, chicken spare ribs, eggplant hotpot, deep fried Japanese tofu, black bean and tofu fish and the list goes on and on. If you want that type of anglicised Chinese food all of you guys should just go to local Chinese take away shop.
Pli2996
I like it!. I really like this place and have been back a few times. Recommended it to family and they have enjoyed their meals there too. The food is yummy and service is good. Food is a little overpriced and decor a bit old but we still keep going back cos of the food.
Bon
Don't waste your time coming here, we had a 7:30 booking & waited till 8:45 for a table. They had other people arriving later & being seated way before us. wouldn't have waited but I had driven 40minutes to get here & had my family with me. The service was shocking!!
Fat.fried.chicken
Take-away...$18.80 for a salty fish fried rice and $17 over for a chicken noodle. These guys must be raking it in... Who seriously charges this much for a fried rice??!! It's not even spectacular!! You have lost my custom. Ask for the take away price first before you order if you're gonna come here.
Jenny
Luv it. Wow what an amazing find in Springvale. The freshest seafood ever. We will be back very soon. Service excellent. Yummy
Nancypants Fancydance
Out of all of the Chinese restaurants around Melbourne, Walrus does the cheapest, fresh & really yummy Chinese seafood dishes. Can't wait to go back!
Joanne
Food was ok , wouldn't say it was super bad but nothing to rave about. It was quite expensive for what it was, most dishes around the $25 mark, fried rice $13.50 & not a very big serve. I ordered vegie hotpot with vermicelli noodles it was mostly noodles with one layer if vegies on the top, tasted ok but not great it was about $17 I think. Fried Ice cream was the worst I have had the coating was too thick & dry and not enough syrup. I would have askedfor more syrup but waitress couldn't speak very good english so would have been too much effort trying to get her to understand. We chose this restaurant as it was packed and thought it must be really good but alas average and expensive for the food quality ,decor & surroundings. I would say it's authentic Chinese as lots of weird stuff like ducks feet, pigeon, intestines, jelly fish on the menu. I wouldn't go back, there are so many other places to choose from in Springvale. Full does not always indicate a great restaurant!
Alexander Yap
Tastes like fish. Crocodile meat is crispy & tastes like fish except a bit stringy. Quite nice, though a bit pricey.
William K
Consistent Quality. The restaurant has been established so many years ago and I've been a frequent customer for many years. They've gone from the smallest size to the current size which I believe was triple what they had.
Food from Walrus that you must try are their 'deep fried' spicy salt stuff. They definitely master the Chinese cooking quite well with more traditional take rather than 'westernized' Chinese food that some Chinese restaurant may offer. The lunch specials are also great value. You get soup and very decent size meal fit for a king! You get more classic offerings like the BBQ meats and the rice/noodle dishes.
The specials I can recommend is their seafood, they do really well in that department because of their 'fresh' stock in the aquariums. Do try the steamed oysters or fish. Whilst the service isnt going to be comparable to the high end up scale restaurant, for the price you pay you get great food with very efficient service.

Expensive, average food, high in flavourings and additives. We took our mother out for her birthday so we booked a table here for 10 people. We're local to Springvale and heard some good reviews about this place but have never tried it out. There was a kitten stuck on their roof which we told the owner about but he was quite rude and dismissed it. Said it wasn't important and asked us what we wanted. When we sat at our table, we ordered a mixture of dishes; roast duck, lotus soup, sweet & sour chicken, vegetable hotpot, seafood claypot and special fried rice. The duck was plain, soft and tasted like it had been treated with chemicals to soften it, so did all the meats actually, especially the prawns and squid. The vegetables were however quite tasty but that's because of the MSG and added sugar. Sweet & sour was the worst dish, sticky thick sauce, very bitter and acidic on the tongue. The nuggets were also quite soggy. Vegetable rice was a bit overcooked as it came out as a clump which needed flicking off the spoon. For dessert we had red bean coconut pudding which was nice and sweet but for some of us, too sweet. The service was good, staff kept renewing the tea when empty and were attentative. There were live fish on display for the kids to look at which looked much happier than the fish we saw at Gold Leaf.
The area was poorly decorated, a bit messy and the place was very chaotic. It is a family restaurant so expect lots of children and noise but this didn't bother us. It certainly did not look like an expensive restaurant from the outside, very old and run down.

The food overall was average but we felt was too expensive. A vegetable hotpot was about $17 and the duck was about $27 so on average, a main would cost about $25 which is a meal on its own in a lot of places and could get you a very decent meal in the city. Springvale is a cheap Asian place so we felt this was not fitting for the area. There are plenty of cheap and good eateries in the Springvale for families and individuals and would not recommend coming here if you're careful with money and expecting a high quality.
Vibey
Jeez Louise, people who call the Walrus overpriced! Have you ever eaten outside Springvale? Because it's really reasonable for the rest of us who actually have.

I go to the Walrus for its consistently good food. Service is efficient and lightning fast. The complementary soup is like my mother would make. What else is important?
MamMaaam
Lunch before 1pm is great for prices and you get decent size portion. Dinner menu is WAY too expensive. I just don't understand why if you order for example the crispy fried chicken you need a huge plate of just chicken then have to order rice separately and pay 4 times what you get for lunch and lunch is a meal on a plate. 0_o

Had a family dinner here and was charged the most outrages price ever for a Chinese meals. Wait for it ......$2000. We were speechless. The foods werent even that special. We have had the same foods at other Chinese restaurants for half the price and the quality was better.

Came home extremely thirsty from eating here. Far too much MSG put into their food! With the money spent here we could have gone to a three hatted restaurant. Won't be back.

Omg what a rip off. Totally over priced. The food was ok but for that kind of money I could have gone somewhere more fancy. SO over priced!!!!!!!!!!!!

Extremely overpriced. Definitely not value for money. We were totally ripped off!!

Lucy. Just taken another friend for lunch.(She thought the best she had eaten) Always the same, very good fresh clean food. Friendly staff, fast and efficient and the prices are very good. Have eaten at a lot of restaurants in Springvale and this is the most consistent one and the one we always come back to.

Fantastic crab noodles. There is one place in Melbourne where I always return to for good crab. Out of the many places I've been, Walrus is definitely worth the drive down!

Highly recommend the XO crab but for those who are less adventurous, just go for the ginger shallot style.

We've also tried other dishes such as the salted egg yoke chicken, lamb hotpot, tofu with salted fish - all were good as well but the crab is their speciality in my humble opinion!

Delicious & Good quality. I've been coming here for all my life this place is fantastic a wider variety of food and the staff are well uniformed for a great service. The owners are fabulous and friendly love eating the fried pigeon and fried chicken with salt and pepper absolute spot on! Along with the fresh abalone and barramundi fish can't complain. Must go to restaurant if you are in the area! Keep it Walrus :)

Consistent ~ all the time!. This is one of the best places to eat in Springvale. Both the lunch and dinner menu are fantastic. My favourite from the lunch menu is the seafood combination crispy fried egg noodles..yum! I would also recommend the spicy chicken spare ribs..it is not that spicy for those can't handle hot food, you can always ask for the chilli to be put separately. The service is super fast and you are always welcomed with a complimentary chinese broth.
Prices have just recently increased bit still worth it. They are currently expanding the restaurant.

Super quick take away. Ordered 13 dishes for just on $100 and was ready in 10 mins. All dishes were really good except for one. Definitely a hit!

Crab and Chicken. Down to Springvale, a Chinese restaurant near Springvale Railway station. Offering great crab dish and other fresh seafood. Thus, the salty egg chicken ribs is the bomb. Yummmm

Disguisting soup. I had a taste of there soup and it was quite disguising as there was a sour and odd taste which tasted off!

Quality is variable. While we usually enjoy eating in this restaurant, there was one time when the food just dis not taste as good as usual. It might just be a bad day for the chef or something but it was quite noticable. For dinner the place is quite busy so you may have to wait to get a table.

Lobster with noodles is always the best here! Even though it may cost $100+ it's always a treat to have it here.

Good for dinner. I always have dinner there when there's nothing to eat at home. Its so close to home too; located in the heart of Springvale. It may be the best Chinese restaurant in that area.

First up: Complimentary soup that is made with pork spare ribs and sometimes they add in lotus, carrots and dried seaweed.

I ordered the roast pork,
You don't know whether it's good unless you try it. The skin was so crispy and did not have any distinctive 'pork' smells.

Stir-fried Chinese broccoli is my favorite but it'd be better if they added white cooking wine to it to bring out the flavors of the garlic.

My other favorite is the fried chicken spare ribs. So fattening and oily and yet, so good.

Service is fast-paced but then again, you get some of the waiters that do not smile at all and just serve you.
Win-win situation there.

...Good heavens, those was the most marvelous food on earth! The yellow stuff in the middle was the lobster's brain, it looked a bit weird but very delicate and delicious to eat raw as well.

The abalone mushrooms in the hot pot were bitter. We had to order more dishes as we were still hungry. Their serving sizes had shrunk to miniscule proportions. Pippis served with Chinese donuts. Fried rice for Kiddo and friends. Seafood birdnest. The birdnest was a bit of a cop out. It was just fried wanton sheets. It should have been a fried potato rosti type affair in basket shape. Salt and pepper pork chops. Tasty. Pity it was so mingy in size. Stir fried beef and cashews. Seafood hot pot with Japanese tofu. This one was nice. But there wasn't enough to go around. Maybe because I ate most of it... Complementary red bean soup for dessert. Verdict: We wouldn't return Overall It's casual family dining. The food was so-so and the serving sizes small. Great if you want a quick meal but not suitable if you are after an elegant meal.
