Review Tabac Bakery - Springvale

Fabubuz Bubuz
This is one of the most visitted bakery in Springvale. We had double serve crispy pork roll. I think it was generously served and the taste was spot on. We tried it with the roll from next door and I'd say they are neck and neck. Definitely try their rolls when you are around. It's worth the queue.

Cash only. Tiger bread rolls the only option. Wheelchair accessible. Photo = veg + cheese. 1 roll, 2 sports drinks $15 Had to walk to ATM in the rain at 6 AM.

Tabac Bakery has excellent customer service by Cindy, Chelsea, family members, the staff and their crispy pork rolls in tiger bread tastes amazing.

I first saw this place on YouTube for having some of the best Banh Mi in Melbourne. It didn’t disappoint - the bread was just the right amount of crunchy and soft, the flavours fresh and the fact that you can add extra pork crackling is a bonus. Highly recommend!

Your grilled chicken Bahn Mi is 10/10! The crispy pork is alright. The rolls are slightly thinner than Bun Bun but that's the only thing I could fault. Yummy and super flavorsome, thanks!
Pauline Heng
Tabac serves the best thick cut cold meat banh mi and their tiger bread is so crispy!
Joyce K
The banh mi here is great, they have the Chinese roast pork with crackling (their competitor down the street doesn’t). Really fresh bread and everything in it is really flavourful in one bite! Make sure to ask for chilli for the extra bit of kick. A nice little family run bakery.

Hands down, my fave crispy pork roll of all time. Well balanced, pate has good flavour, pork is succulent, sauce evenly spread and the tiger skin rolls is perfect 💯

Absolutely - without a shadow of a doubt - the BEST EVER traditional pork rolls in Melbourne.!! I happily travel 20 mins to get them for so cheap! Around $5.. they are so delicious it's not funny. The staff are always delightful and remember us every time. I wouldn't bother going anywhere else as I have and have always been bitterly disappointed. Best rolls, best pork, best crackling, best pâté, and best service. I only wish there were more stars I could give them. A true gem once found .. and you won't go anywhere else once you do. Am always grateful that they are there. Try the mushroom pastry too! It's yum as well..💋👏😁😃😀🤗😍😀☺️👍🏻

Their Crispy Pork Bahn Mi is mind blowing!!! And that bread, ohhhhhhhhh !!!!!

The BEST Vietnamese rolls in Springvale!!! Have tried all the other places and they do not come close to the tasty rolls at Tabac! Fresh ingediants, tiger rolls, tasty meats and condiments!! Do yourself a favour and try them, you will not be disapointed.
Joyce Lin
Definitely one of my favorite banh mi places in springvale - the tiger bread is so good and gives a satisfying crunch! Highly recommend if you're looking for an affordable and convenient meal!

4.0 Very Good

Possibly my second favourite banh mi shop in Springvale, Tabac is popular for their crispy roast pork rolls in tiger bread.

The combination of the crusty bread and the pork crackling gives you endless crunchy joy. Whilst I do enjoy their roast pork I wish it is cut a little wider, at times I find my roast pork falling out from the top onto the floor (tragedy). The pate (if any) is spread pretty thin and I am usually begging for it to come through. Overall however it is still a killer roll.

Prices are some of the more expensive in Springvale, noted that other bakeries usually charge you extra for tiger bread anyway. Staff are friendly and rather social with their regulars.

13/05/17 - 4.0 Very Good

Great little bakery if you want something other than your standard bread rolls. The thing that separates them from the rest is their tiger bread rolls which has a crisp outer shell. Their roast pork roll has the exclusion of pate but the inclusion of extra crackling (you can never have too much crackling).

Great little bread roll but I just wish there was more! Costs a little extra as compared to the local competition.

Love the banh mi (way better than bun buns) and pastries, also the girls are always lovely! The place is also really clean

Been coming here for a while and thought it's so good that the r st of zomato should know about them! I either get the roast pork or grilled chicken banh mi. The filling is always fresh and the meat is always juicy and tender. The added bonus is the delicious tiger bread they make which is super crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. I always get them to add extra fresh chilli which is nice and spicy. Definitely one of my favourite banh mi spots worth checking out if you haven't.

Easily the best Bahn mi in Springvale! And the girls making it are lovely as well

Ordered a crispy pork banh mi. Not your traditional banh mi roll but a crispy exterior like a tiger roll, soft and fresh. The roll was filled with meat and extra crackle. However, I found it lacking in the salad side - especially carrots. When I eat a banh mi, I like it to be light and refreshing. Highly recommend this place.

Got the grilled chicken and crispy pork rolls. The texture of the bread is super crispy and yummy. I got myself the crispy pork roll, it had extra pork skin inside and tasted absolutely divine! I also had a bite of the grilled chicken and really enjoyed it too.
Ann Onymous
I had a half and half grilled chicken and pork roll today and it was delicious! Definitely one of the best rolls I’ve ever had. The flavours were great along with the fresh crispiness of the bun. Will definitely return.
Tessa
My favourite Banh Mi place in Springvale! The bread is crispy and fillings are delicious. Go for the roast pork and get extra crackling! Always hits the spot for me and always worth the walk to get here.
Gary Hayes
The best Banh Mi in Springvale!! The pork belly is super tasty, the staff very friendly and as a bonus, they also accept credit card. Highly Recommend.

Thanks for the meal!

Ordered the roast pork banh mi.

Not my favourite banh mi but I think that is just me. I thought the sweetened tiger bread was a tad too sweet and would have also liked a slightly more viscous sauce as it ended up dripping everywhere. I know many people that swear by tabac and if you like sweeter bread I guessing this place is for you.
Melbourne Food Spotter
Tried the grilled chicken Banh Mi with chilli. Was quite good actually, pretty hidden store as its quite small but prices are reasonable and food is tasty. Worth a try if your in Springvale.

As bun bun was closed I decided to try a traditional pork roll from Tabac bakery. The pork roll was not got at all. The service was very bad. I do not recommend this place to anyone.

I bought a grilled pork and beef banh mi ($5) while my partner purchased the roast pork ($5.5). There were barely red onions left when we ordered so staff only put one piece in each roll...
Ingredients they used include tomato, cooked brown onions, red onions, lettuce, coriander, cucumber, carrots. The highlight was the bread - so crispy!
Melbourne, Let’s Eat
My all time favourite place for a good banh mi in Melbourne. Their tiger rolls and the gravy that they put in their rolls has changed my banh mi game forever. Meats are always so tender and full of flavour. Veges are always fresh, I love it.
Nay Nay
Tried a new Banh Mi place today. The crispy pork looked so good and it tasted the part being nice and crispy. A good Banh Mi and well priced
Vivian
Really great Bahn mi! They do the tiger rolls really well, pork is crispy and delicious too + they are quite generous with the amount of ingredients they add in your roll
Phuong Tran
Best banh mi in springvale hands down. From the bread to the crackling. The crunchiness cannot be beat. Veg are fresh and flavours are good. Go for a walk and stop by to tabac!
Flying Riceball
Love this little bakery for the crispy pork banh mi. My mum who would only go to a particular bakery has even got on board with coming to this place. Their tiger bread is delicious. The staff are friendly and quick with putting together the banh mi. If you find yourself in a queue waiting, it’s worth it. My favourite bakery and worth the 30minute drive when my partner and I head to the area.

After having my first Tiger Roll at Tabac Bakery, safe to say I was converted! As mentioned in other reviews, Tiger Rolls are unique compared to regular Banh Minh buns because it has a crusty surface and the surface usually tastes somewhere between sesame and butter - absolutely delicious!

The only recommendation I would give anyone when getting the tiger rolls would be the Crispy Pork roll! The fillings in the crispy pork roll are abundant with tender crispy pork, bits of pork skin and fried shallots - SO GOOD! All for only $5.00.

Tabac Bakery is the sort of eatery where I am willing to climb out of my cosy bed bright and early (rare for me) just in exchange for a fluffy, warm and mouth-watering Crispy Pork Tiger Roll :)
The Biker Foodie
Just sensational bbq pork rolls. Great service and a popular place to grab lunch. Recommended by the locals - you won’t be disappointed
Park at the library on the other side of Springvale Rd a little further south from the bakery. Buy two rolls. Eat one on the way back to the car. Eat the other at the car. Drive away very happy..

My absolute favourite place for Vietnamese Banh Mi. The roast pork with the crackling is so damn addictive! Always my go to place for a cheap lunch
Flying Forward
Next level tiger rolls - they're crispy, fresh and have great texture. They also have some sort of other seasoning, maybe brushed with salted butter, so they also have really good flavour.

There are also the thin tiger sticks, which aren't as long as the thin baguettes but these are also good. They're exceptional with just plain butter and pate.

Tabac really have some of the freshest bread in Springvale, and considering there are a fair few bakeries in the area, I reckon they're one of the best.
Hungry Little Dinosaur
Husband loves it but I do not! Tiger rolls are an interesting twist however the chicken is not tasty and looks strangely like pork. Going against the grain here, but would not return.
Tina
Work would order pork rolls from Tabac. Vietnamese bread rolls from here are quite pleasant. The tiger bread rolls add an extra sweetness and makes the roll not as 'messy' when eaten due to its texture being not as crumbly as the traditional bread rolls. However, the meats and other contents inside are pretty average tasting.
The Judgey Barista
Without a doubt the best Banh Mi in Melbourne!!! I love this place and it's always busy, I have a had many Banh Mi from many different places at various prices. Yet at $5-5.50 per roll and the amazing flavour and tiger bun.... these are by far the best.
Kevin Rolimpandoei
With the price entailed to the traditional vietnamese bread rolls (Banh mi), the quality is definitely way above! The value you get from a well priced banh mi against the amount of meat and veg you get is unparalled.

Definitely recommending the crispy pork roll! Never eating banh mi anywhere else!
Richard Ov
Absolutely the best service and best Vietnamese pork/ chicken/ beef rolls. Always super friendly and probably the best bakery in Springvale.
Kelvin Vo
One of the best banh mi joints in Springvale, if you love crispy you will enjoy this with their crackling pork and tiger bread. This is what makes it stand out from the rest! If it were closer to the town square I would probably eat here more often !
Brandan Chong
Another local favourite of mine and they do banh mi differently! Here we have the Roast Pork Banh Mi for $5.50 and trust me they are worth every penny.

The use of Tiger Rolls really differentiate them from all the other banh mi stores in Springvale and they are firm and fresh! The banh mi's here are pretty different as they use tomatoes in this roll and that's not something you see all day! They also throw in extra pork crackling for that extra crunch and man you can never have enough pork crackling.

Pricier than all the other competitors in the area, but they are in my opinion one of the best in Victoria. So feel free to try them out!

My partner delivered this to me one day and told me to try it. AND I WAS BACK AGAIN NOT LONG AFTER. It's different from your average Vietnamese rolls, it uses Tiger roll bread which is crispier. Tried the crispy pork roll! Enjoyed it!

Order: Grilled pork and roasted pork & beef roll. The grilled pork has a decent sweet taste however the meat was cut really chunky which made it dry while eating. Roasted pork and beef was a really tasty combination which I liked the most. The vegetables choice is interesting and is not traditional. I did not like the tiger bread at all. It was soft in the inside but the outside was too hard which hurts with every bite you take. I thought the traditional French baguette works way better. Would partly recommend.

My wife and I eat Banh Mi every week when we travel through Springvale area.
We used to be loyal Bun Bun customers, but have found them to be stingy on meat these days, so we decided to try all the other places. After having tried the others we have found Tabac to be the best Banh Mi.
All I hear is crunch every time I bite into my crispy pork roll. The use of tiger rolls add another flavour layer. They also use crispy pork rind in addition to that you already get on the meat.
So long as they don't get stingy on the meat we will be back every week.
The King Of The North
Was a long time customer at ‘Bun Bun Bakery’ do yourself a favour and head a few shops further (back towards Woolworths) and have a crispy pork roll from Tabac. Superior Bun, pickled salad and better overall. Have not been back to ‘Bun Bun’ since and have converted many more to Tabac!

Cripsy pork on tiger roll is one of, if the best Banh Mi that you can get anywhere in Melbourne.

The pork is cripsy, they add extra pork crackling and the Tiger roll is crispy. Everything is fresh. They specialise only in Banh Mi (only Banh Mi is on the menu) because they do it so well. They add purple shallots and homemade hoisin sauce. Excellent! My favourite Banh Mi place.
Recommendation: Always go for crispy roll, don't go for the chicken roll. If you try, you will see why.

One of my favourite banh mi, other than bun buns. I love the crispy pork roll, it’s like a modern twist on the Vietnamese banh mi. A crispy and savoury delightful roll. 😋🥖

Crispy pork roll is the best that I've had for a long time! What can be better than putting crispy pork into a roll, and then adding extra pork crackling on top? :) Have also tried the grilled chicken roll and isn't half bad either. Highly recommended
LA
First timer this arvo and they have the most superior crispy pork rolls in the south east. The meat to salad ratio cannot be faulted. I couldn't really taste the pate or the mayo but the fact that they use Tiger Bread makes up for it! The pork is actually crispy too. This spot is fuego, will be back

This place deserves way more hype it's legit one of the best Bahn joints around. Too bad I live quite far from it. If I was closer I'd eat it on the regular. The crispy pork is amazing, and the bread is very nice. Very special place.

Soooooo in love with this place. Such a unique combination of ingredients, very different from all the other bread stores, very delicious. Lovely service and very clean store. Crispy pork rolls are A M A Z I N G

We love it here. I always make sure to get some crackling on top which makes the roll more special. My only wish is for it to be a little bigger as I don't feel full once I've finished just one.

Got a mixed hot Vietnamese roll with pork and grilled chicken. It was a new tasting roll that I hadn't experienced before. I went here specifically to try the 'tiger' bread roll. The roll was nice and crunchy but I'd need a second tasting to get used to it. Ok so, service was good and quick. The contents of the roll really gelled together well, including ingredients such as onion and fresh tomato that were a surprise edition but really it all worked. This place had a really nice chilli they put it in. It was like a liquid one and really did complement the roll! Be careful as this chilli stains lol as I found out after. However I wasn't too impressed with the pork...it was chewy and had a hard, tough texture. It had flavour but the texture wasn't great. However, I'd come back to get the grilled chicken again. Also it was well priced at $5 which is standard pricing for this area.

Had a craving for banh mi so decided to drive 40 minutes to Springvale to get the authentic stuff. So glad we did! Had the roast pork banh mi with chilli and a Vietnamese ice coffee. The crackling in the roll was amazing, and the whole thing was just so fresh and delicious I won't hesitate to drive back again for it! The coffee was a perfect complement to the roll, glad it was strong as well.
Cookielessvee
One of the best places in Springvale for crispy tiger bread banh mi. Though the bread is a bit thinner than other places, the pork crackling roll is a must try here.
.xLngo
If you want your Roast Pork rolls come here!! The crackling is ace and you can really enjoy it here. The cold Pork roll isn't as good in comparison to other places in Springvale however.

Their pate is absolutely delicious.

The Tiger Rolls are great when fresh though I feel like they have changed the way they made them recently and it doesn't have that shiny gloss anymore.
#alwayshungry
Crispy pork banh mi is sooooo good. The tiger roll adds an extra crispy texture which is delicious. Can not recommend enough. Please eat here!!!
Jlp92
I consider myself a banh mi connoisseur and tabac is the only place that has me driving 20 minutes for the best banh mi around. Cannot rate it enough! The crispy pork is where it is at!
FatMan Package
Sheeyt man being a banh mi expert, these ones are up there with the best this side of the city! Banh mi's here are super crunchy with a chewy texture must eat the grilled pork!
TT
I've had many banh mi in my lifetime and most of them are generally good. This place offered something a little more different from the norm with their crispy pork on tiger role which is pretty amazing, if you like crispy pork skin like me then this is for you. Highly recommended if you want Vietnamese bread roll with a slight twist.
Linda
Really fresh, roast pork is my favourite! Good meat portion and they add in extra pork crackle, the tiger bread and the salad makes it special and unique from traditional banh mi youd find in springvale

20170625 Interesting ... I thought there was something different... they added tomorrow!! Ok but if a breakaway from the others ... I like!

***
Spotted this bakery on my way to drop the boss off at the hairdressers. Thought I'd give it a go whilst I wait.. the crispy pork I admit was pretty good. but the bread was like the ones you can get at the shops where you take home and oven bake yourself. Not that crisp and almost sour dough like taste / consistency?

Saw a bunch of middle aged Viet dudes sitting at outside tables smoking ciggie.. so decided to grab a Vietnamese coffee and sit outside as well.. as I did a Turkish family with teenage kids plonked themselves down in the next table.. we exchanged smiles as the father went in to order the same for himself and family.. this is what makes Melbourne GREAT!! :)

oh .. hmm ... As for the banh mi? give it a go still to make up ur own mind. :) happy eating y'all

BATTLE OF THE Bánh mì

Today's challengers: Tabac Bakery & Cafe Vs Bun Bun Bakery

These two bakeries are only a stone's throw apart on Springvale Rd, Springvale. Bun Bun has been there for around 18yrs. Tabac only 2yrs.

This Whip and two connoisseurs sampled both yesterday. Below is our verdict on Tacac:

-Tiger Roll: Yummy, crackling crunchy. Non traditional.
-Pork: Generous and tasty. Memorable? Hmmm...
-Salad ingredients: Fresh and generous. Even tho i asked them to "Kill me" with chili, none of us could taste any. Couldn't taste the pickled carrot except when we ate it separately. Couldn't taste coriander/spring onion. They include tomato.
-Hygiene: extra good. The rolls are presented in special foil/grease proof bags with clear instructions to prevent contamination etc. EXCELLENT! These bags also do not leak.
-Service: THE GENTLEMAN BAKER/BARISTA is SUPER FRIENDLY and SUPER HELPFUL!

The Tabac pork rolls, we feel, may appeal to a more Western palate and those who want something a little different. Even if non-traditional, they are SUPERB.

4/5 Tabac. 4.5/5 Bun Bun (please see Whip review on Bun Bun Zomato page).

my brother and i come all the way from Frankston for the terrific bánh mì [vietnamese meat of choice & salad rolls] - so i reckon that says plenty. Plus the family are always so warm-hearted and welcoming. Also, our Staffy 'Millie' always comes for the drive and adores their moist yummy chicken fillets!
Billy Le
I love this place, the rolls and coffee are to die for! Such a clean store with great service, it's always nice purchasing every week. Never get bored of their food
Millicent
My absolute FAVOURITE place for bánh mì! They're always so generous with the meat. I can never go past the crispy pork roll - delicious chunks of fatty, flavoursome pork accompanied with lots of crunchy pork crackling. No matter how many times I have it, I never get sick of it. And I can't go past their tiger bread - it adds so much to the roll. I never go anywhere else for bánh mì!
JJCABS
OMG yaaaasssss! BEST PLACE TO GET FOB ROLLS!
The service there is great, always welcoming and the food is to die for!
Get the crispy pork roll!! For sure!!!
Stacy
The tiger bread here is delicious!!!!! Inside is a unique combination of salad that is both fresh and yum, my favourite bun to order is the roast pork, but the chicken is good too. Great customer service, always served with a smiling face and its also very clean inside. Would recommend 10/10
Super.dooper.christine
10/10. The crispy pork roll with the tiger bread is delicious and the service is great!!
Hel
Bahn mi rolls are delicious especially with their tiger bread!. There are some great places in Springvale that make bahn mi, but this place has the most amazing bread rolls. Freshly baked, they use their distinct tiger rolls which makes it extra crunchier (and some what tastier). They have really yummy asian barbecued meats (chicken and pork) plus a crispy pork belly which they use generously to fill the rolls. Salads and pickles are also fresh and the end product (ie the bahn mi roll) is out of this world!

While some of the other well known Vietnamese bakery's are closed on Sunday, this one isn't (it's how we stumbled upon it) and it's so worth taking the drive to go and try one. We've been here a couple of times already and plan to be regular customers. It's well worth the extra cost to order the bahn mi with the tiger rolls!
