Review Kao Gaeng Thai - Springvale

Simon Natal
Located in Thai hub of Springvale shopping area, this is truly authentic Thai restaurant, unlike others which cater more to Western diners' paletes. The food came after ten minutes which is quite fast. Nicely presented and full of flavours as you will expect from Thai food. Highly recommended!

Pad Woon Sen was very fragrant and nice! Wonderful vermicelli noodles, we got it with pork mince and it was very nice and tasty. I believe we had also ordered this dish in mild spice but it wasn’t spicy at all, kind of wish it had a little bit of kick to it. The crab fried rice was quite tasty, but not super sophisticated. I do like the partially cooked onions in it, gives it a lot of sweetness and crunch. The calamari salad was quite spicy, we got it in mild but i think the mixture of raw onions, garlic and chilli resulted in a pretty spicy dish! I loved the vegetables but do think that the calamari was slightly over cooked and tough. Iced red milk was nice, tasted like strawberry milk that you get from Oak, but there’s a slight difference in flavour Prices and service was okay, very cosy and small restaurant. Service did take awhile as the restaurant was quite busy. 📸 Crab Fried Rice, Pad Woon Sen, Calamari Salad, Iced Red Milk

I had the sea food pad thai and a rose milk drink. Drink had a little too much sugar but the food was amazing . It was like having lunch in Thailand. Pad thai was $16.9 and the drink was only $5. We didn’t have to wait more than 10min on the food. Staff was really friendly. Highly recommend

I had Pad Se Ew for lunch here and it was great. Lots of Thai customers too which was nice to see. Will come back for dinner :)

Omg I can’t deny that their tom sabb is very authentic!! Got so many herbs and ingredients inside just like what I had in Thailand before. 10/10 for this dish. Their crab fried rice also very yum too. Goes well with the soup.

It’s a hidden gem for outsiders, the food is just so Bangkok or lets say Thai. We ordered the best Tom yum soup then a regular Thai fried rice and dessert (De-li-Sious). Value for money, quality, hospitality. I enjoyed my time here.

Its been a while since I picked up dinner in Springvale. Of course I wasn't going to go past my favourite Thai place which is made to order and authentic in Thai spice aswell.

Thanks for the meal!

Ordered pad see eww, panang curry and sticky rice.

Be warned medium level of spice may be too spicy for some. My partner could not tolerate it but... I thought it was awesome! The panang was smooth, creamy and coconuty. The flavours of the pad see were sweet and salty. Loved the sticky rice which was both dry and sticky going perfectly with the penang.

We usually come here when we crave Thai food near home but taste is more average here. My partner really likes their pork sausages. On the weeknights we came here it is generally very quiet, sometimes it's just us two. My last order was stuffed up, as I ordered a noodle soup dish with wonton but got the one with pork blood jelly. I didn't say anything as I do like this jelly and didn't want to waste food. I remember having porridge when I was unwell as a child and this really reminded me of it due to the very soft starch noodles which were breaking apart, though I didn't mind it too much. Love the banana sticky rice dessert here too.

I have the thai basil stir fry a lot at other places, but I was a little underwhelmed by Kao Gaeng's version. Seemed like there wasn't enough basic or garlic, so it tasted a lot of soy and oyster sauce.
Green curry was thick and nicely rich.
It's run by a Thai family, so it is authentic, but the execution is just a little off.
Good value though.

Awesome food. Loved it. Will definitely be back 😊
We had chicken pad Thai & green curry chicken. The green curry was as good as what we had in Thailand.

We had amazing authentic thai food, on a saturday. We loved the service, the chef asked how the food was, after we finished our meal. The restaurant was spacious, ambience was good and family friendly.

Was there last week. Good points: Large servings of most meals ordered even the content of prawns was impressive. They were actual prawns and not shrimps. Well priced. Food was nice but definitely lacking the oomph punch of that intense Thai flavor I was after. Prawns were not throughly deveined. Otherwise a nice place .

Have recently been introduced to Kao Gaeng by a Thai friend after coming back from Thailand and love it!

The set meals are my absolute favourite. Love their Papaya Salad and Sticky Rice. I have also tried their Nam Tok noodles and it was very tasty and very generous with their meat.

Must add it is also a bonus that they do serve Chang beer as well! Will need to come back when I am in the area to try their other dishes.

The staff are wonderful and very accommodating. Restaurant itself is quite clean as well! This place reminds me of being in Thailand!

Whenever I feel like a break from Vietnamese I come to Kao Gaeng in Springvale. And every single visit I will always have their Nak Tok beef noodles (aka boat noodles). So far it is the best boat noodles I have tasted. The soup based is very rich and 'minerally' in taste. The toppings of fried lard croutons and pork liver are items that not many other places have. When you put all of these together, it is a winning combination in my book. I have tried the som tam (salad), larb and sticky rice with grilled pork and they all very delicious too.

Much more authentic Bangkok Thai food than your average local Thai restaurant.
We eat there regularly and are never disappointed, our bill for my wife and I is usually about $40 to $50 including drinks, that is very reasonable for such good food.

Delicious Thai food located in Springvale. Have been here several times and it just keeps getting better and better. Favourites of mine include the Tom yum fried rice and the pineapple fried rice. Pad Thai is delicious as well.

A solid Thai restaurant located in one of the carparks. We were in a bit of a hurry and both went for the noodle dishes - a pad see ew and pad thai and both were good. Not up in the top 10, but a solid meal. The menu looked pretty interesting and had a good range of thai dishes and seem to specialise in whole fish - I'd try that next time.

Has this place changed owner? Portion seems so much smaller. Waiters are different too.

One word:terrible! The serv.... One word:terrible!
The service is really bad! The entree was not given, but the rice was already on! Also,we ordered the meat ball, but we were given the sausage...
The taste is not right, not traditional Thai food, especially curry...
We will never ever come back!

Hits the spot. Best tom yum soup with noodles in Melbourne. Food is never disappointing and always hits the spot. Larger menu than also commendable Noi Lucky across the road. I like a Thai restaurant that isn't too snooty to do a good papaya salad.

Language difficulty. Been there and the food is reasonable .. Staff need English lessons ....

Simply a GEM with brilliant Thai taste. Every time I visit Kao Gaeng, I am SHOCKED how good this place is! I love the taste of Thai so much, for me it is far superior to Chinese or French, the #1 and #2 world cuisines. If possible I'd eat Thai 50% of the time. I hardly go to other Thai restaurants now...

Kao Gaeng compares VERY favorably with Baan Khun Mae in Bangkok (Siam Square Soi 8 Bangkok) which is better, I'd be just splitting hairs!!! However I can only guarantee my last comment when Annie Suwan is cooking and I am always shaking my head "wow this is just fantastic food".

I brought my brother (who is married to a Thai) and he was impressed.

Try their green mango salad, grilled pork and sticky rice with thai iced tea! The best!!!

This is real Thai!. This place really is a hidden gem! Love the Thai sausage with sticky rice and usually go for the deep fried fish
With either the sweet or chilli sauce. Service can be a little slow at busy times. Always be careful of the parking inspectors.
