Review Khe Sanh - Springvale

Alison Bibra
Have been there for the Chinese new year dinner with family, waiter recommended great dishes and one of the best restaurants around that area. Certainly will go there again and highly recommend if you want fresh yummy Chinese cuisine. Went there a few times and they were booked out so this time round I make a booking for dinner this Saturday not to be disappointed again. Alison

Crappy low quality food. Not cooked with love. Restaurant interior looks nice.

Under new management. Only better. Very impressed. My new hangout from now.

Will not be ordering from this restaurant again! Customer service is appalling. Shame.

Food can be rather salty and uncreative.

Satisfying feed.
Lunch times are quiet and I first came here for the boneless hainam chicken rice. It was one of the better ones I've had but still far from the best.

Dinner can get very busy but you will always be attended to. Usually get the ginger & spring onion mud crab and crispy roast duck with plum sauce. Both enjoyable but quite simple flavours, would improve with more depth in flavour. The price per lb usually more competitve here than nearby Hoi An Village.

SERVICE: 3/5
Regardless of whether it's quiet or busy, it seems that the staff here lack the sense of urgency. They are friendly enough but just need a bit of nudge to receive service that meets expectation.

FOOD: 3.5/5
Also a nice touch with complimentary dessert (sweet soup) and fresh cut fruit.

DECOR & AMBIENCE: 3/5

KID FRIENDLY: Yes

Had no idea and no expectations... on arrival I had a quick scan of the packed room. the restaurant is not that big. But the atmosphere was great! all the tables were filled with families feasting and having a good feed! One thing I noted was that they all had crab noodles on their table..

it was part of an 8 course banquet. see pics.. food here overall is great! the oysters.. I prefer the ones from Gold Leaf. besides that everything else we tried was pretty darn good. Nothing too creative or funky or BS... like "fusion". It's good ol Chinese banquet fanfare. The usual dishes you'd expect on any Chinese menu but done well! There's an a la carte menu that I'll prob try next time.

A good alternative to consider if want to eat away from the Springvale centre.

Oh the outside partitioned area is great on a sultry night but def not when a storm suddenly decides to come through with huge wind gusts!!

Ordered via Delivery Hero..called 3 times..said it on the way...2.5 HOURS later got delivery hero to call them..their reply.. they "didnt get the order" ..although I spoke to the lady at the restaurant TWICE and someone has to physically accept the order for it to confirm to the customer...how do they explain that? No apology..nothing back from the restaurant

Great place to go with a lot of people so you can try a variety of dishes! I have eaten here multiple times and I have never been disappointed, super friendly and fast service and always busy!!

Not a bad place, I came here for lunch. The service was good and friendly, and my meal was satisfactory - it was prompt and tasty. I would like to try their seafood sometime.

Nice crab with ginger sauce, nice and fresh. A little on the bland side really needed some different flavours coming through. Quite a long wait for food, but would eat here again

Khe Sanh seafood restaurant seems to have everything you could want, and we will probably head back there to try out a number of (non-seafood) items,

Try the crispy chicken, or whatever it was called, it had a really nice taste to it.

My favourite dishes were the snow crab with goose liver (foie gras) pate and the crispy chicken. But there were many other dishes worth trying.

Wow. What an awesome meal. This place was so busy but the service was great. I've never seen so many people ordering crayfish! We had eggplant pork mince hotpot, pippies with black bean. Salt and pepper flounder. Garlic prawns and some rice. Was awesome.

Tasty fresh food. Our first experience at Khe Sanh a few years ago wasn't pleasant. Since then Khe Sanh has had a makeover along with new chefs and owners.

After hearing good reviews from friends we thought we would give it another go. We ordered a few different dishes, sweet corn soup, fried rice, lobster with ginger and Mongolian lamb. We were very impressed with all the dishes. The food was delicious and fresh and the service was also quick.

Their Hainese chicken from their lunch menu is also devine. I could not fault anything and they are always willing to accomodate with whatever requirements you may have. Thank you Khe Sanh I will definitely be back!!!

Pathetic and Tragic Service and Food.. I had ordered takeaway the other day and the food was horrific. I had crispy chicken on red rice, and by the time I opened the takeaway box at home; not checking it at the restaurant, I found that the chicken was overcooked and dry. To describe the chicken, it was very black, the chicken was over done to the point where it was coated in charcoal. I then had to buy McDonalds for dinner instead due to the unsatisfactory food. The food has to then be fed to my dog; who himself was hesitant to eat it. This place is definitely not recommended and will need to review their business for a lot of improvement.

Slow delivery, cold food, pricey.. Delivery half hour late, food came 1.5 hours after order was placed. Food was cold, dishes overpriced.

I heard this place reopened recently including the return of key chefs and change of management (my dads an asian chef - he knows all the asian restaurant goss!) As i live in the area went to have dinner on a Thursday night couple weeks ago with a table for 4. Food and service was excellent. Had the Hong Kong style hor fun with beef, shredded crispy beef in plum sauce, mother in law fish (deep fried barramundi with spicy sweet n sour sauce), eye fillet with black pepper sauce and steamed rice. Wine selection was fine and comparable to any other restaurant this size (I'd guess around 100 or so seats). Wasn't too busy, don't think it's caught on yet. Will be back again soon.

I had the best one of my top 10 dinner ever at khe Sanh last night! It's brilliant great food and best service and the price is reasonable as they told me the restaurant is running under new owner I'm not sure what the previous owner had done but my experience last night I believe khe Sanh is the best seafood restaurant in town

Grabbed some takeaway from here as it's nearby and sadly it was far from good. Horrifically overpriced and the food wasn't really acceptable either - such a shame

Great food for cheap!. I love this place! I always come hear after work for dinner when there is no food at home, their hainanese chicken and rice is very well flavoured and customer service is very nice and friendly!

Went on a saturday night and was not overly busy. Food is ok for a Chinese restaurant but nothing really different from others. Ordered lemon grass calamari which was bland and that's paying it a complement. Another person in our party ordered a pork dish and they had run out of pork at 6pm. This is staggering considering the amount of butchers in springvale. Had run out of diet coke even though aldi is probably 30m from their doorstep. The last straw was that they had no snow peas for dishes ordered in house as they were all allocated to take away dishes already. Also had no beef or pork spring rolls.
Wouldn't go back considering the amount of places to choose from in springvale.

Bad service and rip off, food was not up to standard. I ordered a barramundi. I cook barramundi myself and I know for sure that the fish is no way 2 pounds. One pound costs $29, and the fish costed me almost $60. When I questioned the waiter about the cost of the fish,he took the bill and passes it to the manager. The manager handed me back the bill without saying anything. Then I asked him, all he said was " I am sorry( sarcastically) but the fish weighs 2 pounds." He was rude. Also we had to ask for the bill 3 to 4 times before it came. Food was not good. Prawns were so overcooked and shrunk. The batter was too thick. The sweet and sour pork was soggy, was not scispy and crunchy. The soft shell crabs took forever to come. Very disappointing.

Another great night. Well went back there and as normal the food great Danny made us so welcome we had a great night and a fun time

-----12 May, 2013-----

Great foodand service. Cheers
Fantastic Food and Service. This resaurant is amazing. The service and food were both great. We asked for gluten free dishes and there were many to choose from. Best asian food in the SE area. A must. Cant wait to go back. Try it, you wont be disappointed.

Best Asian restaurant.. I have ever been too!! Went there for my dads 50th, great service, and very large food portions!!

Yeah.. First client with 2 malaysia mate. Tried their Hainanese chicken rice and their $1 soup this afternoon and I love the ginger rice. not oily but perfect cooked. The chicken was soft and tasteful. The rice (which is cooked with ginger, garlic...) was my favor. The chicken and the rice complemented each other by being very fantastic. yes, GO again!

Nice!. Having both a Chinese and Korean chef on the premises means an eclectic choice of dishes, including venison and crocodile. Owner/ host was happy to explain dishes and very accomodating. Seafood (of the its in the tank you can see it variety) is a speciality. Great dinner, well priced, good wine list too and in the Entertainment book.

Not Consistent. I have had great food & ordinary food. I have been given great service & poor service.Daniel needs to fine tune the way he is running this Restaurant. I look for consistency, I now think twice before heading back

Horrible experience. Tried their Hainanese chicken rice and their $1 soup a few days ago and I wasn't impressed. The chicken was bland and very dry. The rice (which is meant to be cooked in chicken stock) was dull. The chicken and the rice complemented each other by being very boring.

The $1 soup (which contained chopped bits of mushrooms, corn, carrots, potatoes & egg white) was the saltiest thing I have tasted in a long time. My tongue was sensitive for an hour after only having half of the soup.

In summary, stay away from this place. There are plenty of decent restaurants around the area.

Mediocre. Booked table for 5, two weeks before. Arrived to be shown a table for 4. Extra chair added, placed in the aisle, just where everyone had to go past. Was near the entrance and cold breeze every time the door opened. Orders taken, entree's arrived at same time, good. Waited 1 hour for mains, one arrived. Eventually caught a waiters eye and asked about our order. Oops, seems the kitchen staff all took a break together, very sorry. Half way through the
next arrived, first one finished eating and the rest arrived. the food was actually not bad, however, the service was appalling. Tables that arrived after us did not seem to have the same issues. Presented our Entertainment Book Coupon with the bill and were advised in that case we could only pay by cash. Mains were about $18, entree about $10, bottle of wine $18. Have been to this restaurant a few times and expected it to improve , especially after the renovations. Unfortunately not the case.

Best meal I've had out in a long time! The food and service was magnificent!! I'll definitely be coming back and recommend it to absolutely everyone :)

Look past the facade.. Looks like a crack den on the outside, but don't let that fool you. Very comfortable and kid-friendly, the service is fantastic and since management has changed hands the place has really turned around. The crab curry was amazing and the chicken was fantastic, but the food wasn't consistent. None of it was bad but could use some improvement. All-in-all, it was a really nice night out and I'd definitely go back.

Lunch Special. Hainan chicken is quite good. Its taste is very close to another Malay restaurant near Monash Uni. Also its environment is cleaner and more comfortable.

New owner = better taste. Khe Sanh Seafood Restaurant has been under new management a couple of months ago, so please don't judge a book by its cover and expect it to be the same as the previous owner.
Lucky I tried it recently with its' new owner, Daniel, in business. Because I know some of the 'dislikes' have been for the previous owner.

What I tried:

Lobster w/ egg noodles - This was what I was craving for, for a whole week. I was very satisfied having eaten this. The lobster was fresh; The dish was tasty. My taste buds just sparked. I thought it was very flavorsome. But I thought it wasn't hot, but just warm. Maybe it was left on the counter for too long because I prefer my dishes coming out hot. It just looks better with more steam. Other than that, the chef did a great job.

Chinese Brocolli w/ garlic - the broccoli was fresh but it would've been better if it was fresh garlic instead of dried garlic. It tasted burnt and also, the aroma would have been better with fresh garlic.

Hot & Sour Soup - tasty! It wasn't sweet like some of the restaurants that states 'hot & sour soup' but ends up being 'sweet & sour soup'.

Soft Shell Crab w/ Salt & Chili - Usually, this dish would've been my favorite but it was beaten by the crispy skin chicken.

Crispy Skin Chicken - Juicy and tender. My favorite for the night. I was so full and usually when you're really full, nothing tastes good. But this was beautiful. So tasty. The skin was sweet and matched well with the meat. I think the skin had a hint of honey but I could be wrong. A must try!

Roast Duck - a little dry. The meat was not juicy and did not ooze the 'good oil' out of it. Most roast ducks should be juicy but this one wasn't. Shame because this would've been my favorite dish.

Pumpkin Delight - Who would've thought, pumpkin for dessert (with a hint of jasmine tea). It wasn't too sweet. It was just right. The coconut syrup blended well with it along with the sago. You have to be there early to order this dessert because it's very popular!

Service is friendly and attentive. The service is very attention to detail.
Such a shame that I couldn't try all the dishes on the menu but I'm definitely coming back a 2nd time and many more times to come, to try everything.
