Review Supernormal Canteen - St Kilda

Vinh Ha
We came here with high hopes but were generally disappointed. For what it was, it was simply too expensive (I would say about 50% above the fair price) and, even without price being a consideration, it still wasn't anything special. In other words, while there was nothing "bad", we were underwhelmed by the quantity of the food and it failed to redeem itself through being noteworthy in any particular way. Many would describe the food as "fusion", but a lot of it is really just muted versions of the equivalent Asian dishes - for example, the pickles were quite bland and either haven't been pickled long enough or strongly enough, the XO sauce used on the calamari lacked the boldness that makes XO special, and the spicy sauce accompanying the fried chicken was just vinegary. While the service was friendly and attentive, and we enjoyed being able to sit at the bar and see the kitchen in action, the let down was the food. As a result, I wouldn't be inclined to visit again.

Amazingly delicious food. We went for the banquet which was great value and allowed us to try a great selection of the menu. The lobster rolls did not disappoint! The peanut butter parfait for dessert was also an excellent finish to the meal. Perfect for a special meal.

First time here. Arrived at 12 (30mins earlier than our booking) but was kindly still seated earlier. Service was great, very attentive and food was great. Everything we ordered was very delicious - I especially liked the yakitori

First time here in Melbourne. Walk in with no expectation because the restaurant is just beside my hotel. The service was great, very attentive and food was great. Everything we ordered was very delicious - absolutely in love with this place 👍🏻 (manage to took only 1 photo as the food were too good)

Solid and tasty. I’m vegetarian but my dinner companion had a number of the signature dishes which were followed by ooh and aaah of delight and silence while the taking a moment to savour the flavour. Yum. Has a nice outlook over the top end of Albert park. My only ask would be if they could add some more adventurous vegetarian options to the menu.

Amazing food and great service, we where a party of four and everything we got was so tasty, the king sashimi and vegetarian dumpling where very good while the prawn chicken dumpling and the lamb was amazing

Great food.If you walk in without a booking the only the place available is on the middle at the communal table or next to the window...Staff is incredibly kind.Food served in a timely manner.Have a look at the menu. The dumplings with chicken and prawns were amazing as well as the lobster roll.Would skip the whiting and the pork rolls next visit. The peach with the burn honey ice cream was worth it.Highly reccomend the place. It is already heaving with people and very popular. Will go back for sure.

Extremely thoughtful and brilliantly executed menu. We had the banquet which was a great combination. Everything was great, duck and pumpkin the standout. Children loved the lobster. Great selection of wines but friendly and attentive service made the day. Well done. Highly recommended.

I can recommend Supernomal Canteen, the food and service is first rate, the wine list like all of this group is exemplary, from last nights special of sea urchin which was sensational, I must add the butter lettuce salad and the house Riesling as a combination is worth a visit at any time, thanks for becoming our neighborhood restaurant.

Imagine eating a super salty flounder + which you paid $36 for + arrived super late after 3 nudges to the waitress/kitchen + small portion. Not going back there anymore. No choice but to finish the terrible flounder as if I send the fish back to the kitchen it’s another looooooong wait. It has so much salt I can’t feel my tongue afterwards.
Nicholas Koh
Staff knew 100% you won't be full with their set menu (8 courses but one serve is split between 2 people), and didn't dare ask how the food was at any point in time.
Jane Bourjau
Great ambience, location and wait staff. The menu is great but I'm currently into an anti-carb thing. This massively impacts my rating btw so normal people will probably rate this restaurant higher. SO I can tell you that the two sashimi dishes are lovely but I prefer a more challenging flavour profile. I used to get the crab salad dish but that is now off the menu. The other salad with shiso leaves is wonderful.

Lobster roll never disappoints neither does the peanut butter parfait and soft chocolate 😋😋 the lamb bao was to die for, great wine too. 👏👍

Fantastic, thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience, staff were very accommodating of us bringing a pram and booking at the last minute.. spot on food, great wine list.

I love Supernormal and canteen did not disappoint. Great food and great service. Noise level a bit high but on the whole it is a great night out.

My first visit to Supernormal didn't disappoint....great food and great service will try again. My one small problem was the noise level....very difficult to hear one another and the waiters. Perhaps shouldn't go on Friday night!!
Greg Grenfell
Loved the food, great service and the opportunity to watch very skilled staff preparing meals and cocktails.
Sherlaine Charisiou
Food is bland and uninspired. Portions are ridiculously small. Menu leaves a lot to be desired. Have tried this place twice.. it just got worse the second time.
Stephen Eric
The food varied and delicious. A bit $$

Me and my husband spent more than 200 dollar for (we ordered set menu)veg pickles, 4 mini cubes of tuna, with this amount of money, we can have a fancy dinner in Koko or Nobu,
Rachel Cahill
Awesome relaxed atmosphere with great share food full of flavour! Try it ..you won't be disappointed

Excited that we can actually make a reservation at Supernormal Canteen! The food and the service are both stunning! Great young well trained and passionate team on board! Will be back!

Mmm lobster rolls. Buttery and delicious.
We also enjoyed the habachi chicken tsukune.
Great spot for a sunny at Kilda lunch.
Will be back for the lobster roll

Some interesting flavors and good cooking, and a decent Riesling by the glass. But overall it’s overpriced.

This is our second time we came here and they've let us down! They forgot our order, the food was slow, the air circulation here is not very good. When the chef started cooking , the whole place was fulled with smoke. The smoke is not suitable for premium dining.
We ended up having ur clothes and hair filled with smokey smell. 😣

However, we still love the lobster roll and the duck. The rest seems to be more on the salty side.
Eleni Calambi
We had a private event here and the food and service was absolutely faultless. All of our guests left commenting about how exceptional the food was. The staff and service was amazing and they thought of every detail for our special day.
Lovefood
Came here for their special event on wed 21/8. Was seated at the bar. Set menu dining usually takes about 2hrs so I already knew this was going to be an uncomfortable dining experience. And boy... my neck (having to turn and talk to my friend) and lower back was in pain. Food was nice but if you ask whether I would recommend it to a friend I would say no. Main cutlery was chopstick and I was very surprised they did not have a rest for it, which to me come across as unhygienic. to end with a mistake on the bill that double our total. I expect more from restaurants like these.

We originally planned to try the city restaurant but decided to stop here instead after a scenic drive along Beach Rd to Beacon Cove. Staff were very attentive, efficient and informative. We were told the hibachi grill dishes set this place apart from its city resto. The off-menu Spicy Grilled Wings is a standout in taste and presentation. The Grilled Baby Octopus salad is equally superb. Lobster Roll looks and tastes delicately light. Prawn and Chicken Dumplings in chilli was ok. Char Siu Pork Neck was tough (hence the 4 rating). If you're prepared for the high-end prices and demure serves, it's worth coming here for a special treat
Jodibaby
tapas food with asian twisted. Food was super good and flavourful the only down side is the price is a bit expensive. however the service made up for it.
Jane Cook
Delicious Asian-inspired food and very reasonably priced. We had the $10 sup noodle cups - the best noodle soup I've ever had - and shared a large plate of mixed dumplings. A very filling and warming meal for a cold Winter's night. We loved the decor too, very stylish (shades of Tokyo) with a lovely light and warmth about the place. The service was faultless.
Lunarcry
This tapas-style restaurant serves mainly Asian-style dishes. All the dishes we had were mostly delicious, though I thought 17 dollars for a tiny lobster roll is very overpriced.

I went here during Supernormal Natsu and I recommend it highly for when it comes around again. Checkout the photos of a 7-course set menu we tried, and were blown away by.

Crudités: Zucchini flower, cucumber, tomato, peas each with its own refreshing dressing. They look like plain, bland veggies on a plate but you are pleasantly surprised when their beautiful flavours.

Rye cracker, torched avocado, finger lime, avocado mousse. What a great combination of ingredients to put together! ❤️

Soft, melt-in-the-mouth mozzarella with sweet nectarine, Serragghia capers, tomatoes and fresh lovage. I was surprised by how nice these capers tasted. The nectarine slices tasted divine with the salty capers and really balanced the dish.

Warm, mouth-watering grilled flatbread w/ smack-in-the-face white miso bagna cauda. 🤩 did you know bagna cauda literally translates to hot bath? I can still taste this in my mouth even days after I ate this deliciousness.

Grilled and marinated heirloom zucchini, yogurt, burnt butter, mint and Aleppo pepper. Did you know there are so many ways to love zucchini? I can’t believe I have never had yogurt and burnt butter before! It blew me away! 😲 This was my favourite dish of the 7-course menu at Supernormal Natsu.

Tomato curry with toasted chickpeas and eggplant, with a side of Lune croissant served as roti. Honestly this was not very likeable. I think I have too much baggage and I will never be impressed with any non-traditional version of Indian cuisine.

Didn’t think I would get to eat a literal oil puddle in a dessert. Fromage blanc sorbet, crystallised herbs, olive oil and edible flower. Beautiful creamy sorbet did remind me of cheese, and the tiny sugary herbs were definitely needed for that delicate balance of flavours.

We used to come to one in the city. I'm glad they open in St Kilda. The food is overpriced but really GOOD! The service is friendly and nice. Will definitely come back with a family & friend in occasionally.

What a shame. The food was absolutely DELICIOUS, and you can tell a lot of care and attention has been put into every flavour that goes into these meals, but I ordered the "Menu for One" on UberEats, and the portions were minuscule. I'm still really hungry. And I'm not a stranger to paying a premium in order to savour better-crafted food, but for the price I paid versus the portions I got, it was an absolute disappointment, and I, unfortunately, cannot recommend it.
Lole Lole Lole
Make sure you get the hibachi chicken wings. Wowwwww. So yum! And get the duck bao too. It's deconstructed but it makes it better when you have to break open the soft bun yourself, pick apart the duck with the crispy skin and then top it off with spring onions and as much (or little) sauce as you want. If you haven't been, you must go. Now!
Anna Mac
Enjoyed our night here. Staff were extremely friendly and welcoming. Food was tasty and flavourful however some dishes were better than others: the avocado toast was delicate with a creamy avocado foam, the curry was fragrant and flavoursome however the zucchini was quite underwhelming as was the mozzarella.
They had a special vegan menu which was nice to try but the food took for ages and as were outside felt like we didn’t get a huge amount of attention.
Worth a look but don’t think they are there quite just yet.
Kiki
Supernormal Canteen was super impressive. Wine list and the dishes were amazing. Especially the yakitori dishes, they were unreal! The service was 10/10 - Jess was our waitress and she provided impeccable service.

Literally the worst service I’ve ever had at a restaurant in Melbourne. From the moment our group of 14 arrived, we had to practically teach our waitress how to take our drink order - with many of the drinks coming back incorrect. After the first round of drinks, they had ran out of the pale ale beer and the bottle of wine we had chosen. We then chose another bottle of wine which they also didn’t have, in fact this happened 3 times - conveniently only having bottles over $100+ left. The waitress lacked personality, knowledge and just general customer service basics ... at one point all 14 people had empty drinks in front of them! Completely ruined the evening and by dessert we’d all had enough of waiting around. Don’t waste your time - a shame when the city restaurant is a million times better.

If you’ve been to the city one, this is everything you like about it and more (with a side of charcoal grill). First, they take reservations. Second the serve wine by the carafe (aka half bottle). Thumbs up to RSA.

Alcohol was about standard prices but their range of beers is limited. Asahi super dry and asahi black was on tap... I do prefer an ale but it probably doesn’t go all that well with Asian food.

I must say I enjoyed all their dishes, right from the start the peanut snack.

The wagyu brisket was a study in contrast between crispy texture of the radish and the melt in your mouth texture of the beef.

The calamari was nice, and underneath the greens there was a good amount of calamari.

The grilled fish was smoky. Greens to keep things regular.

The dumplings were the highlight but could have done with a bit more spice. I suspect the tried to do a chilli oil dumpling but has to tone it down for the general public.

We weren’t quite full so had the cauliflower at the end. The xo sauce was good; actually the cauliflower was really a vehicle for flavour!

Took a star off as it’s a bit pricey. $17 for a lobster roll the size of a small dinner roll (which we didn’t have - I had this last time in the city and saw the rolls were from breadtop!). The portions in general were on the small side. We ended up spending $70 per head but were quite modest in alcohol consumption and left room for cheese at milk the cow next door. Can’t fault the good but save for a special treat.
Mistermister
Quite a different vibe to the city one. Wagu brisket was a stand out along with the Hibichi chicken. The kingfish ceviche was good- I always have to order a kingfish ceviche. A bit disappointed with the duck. One leg for $39 and the lobster roll was nice, but $17 each person was a bit much even if it was lobster. Prawn dumplings with Szechuan sauce had a nice punch to it. I had the yusu spritz which was light and slightly sour. Tasted more like a soft drink. 4ppl $358 includes drinks.
Gastrology
The smaller, more intimate, sister restaurant, Supernormal Canteen is everything you’ve come to love about Supernormal but with a younger, cooler vibe.

The menu comprises a variety of old Supernormal favourites with an additional focus on delicious morsels straight off the hibachi grill.

We loved spending the evening in Canteen's private dining 'cube' where we were taken on a delicious culinary journey.

To start we loved the Typhoon shelter school prawns – perfectly crisp and seasoned to the yin-yang, it’s the perfect bar snack with your favourite tipple. Also perfect with your drink? The amazing selection of yakitori. Canteen boasts some of the best yakitori that Melbourne has to offer. We absolutely loved their range of grilled skewers. Without exception, each skewer had been sufficiently seasoned and was wonderfully flavoursome and displayed a delectable outer charring courtesy of having benefited from the perfect time on the grill.

For something light and refreshing, the Raw Kingfish is a stunner. Slices of beautifully fresh Kingfish are adorned in yuzu buttermilk, cucumber and fermented chilli. A melange of creaminess, tartness, heat and textures.
Good Food Good Mood
My husband chose Supernormal for dinner with friends on Saturday which admittedly I wasn’t overly thrilled about because I find their food spicy and overrated. Sadly it didn’t surpass my expectations with even the infamous lobster roll not delivering to previous standards.

The calamari was probably the dish that held the most appeal for me but it was the most lacklustre. I couldn’t even find the calamari under the mountain of greens. The dumplings and the dan dan noodles were nothing special but as a non duck eater I can’t comment on the baos. The XO cauli was almost not ordered but it was my preferred dish of the night. Given it’s not a cheap dining experience it was overall quite disappointing.

Ambience: 4/5
Food: 4/5
Staff: 4/5
Will I return: when I’m in the area

Supernormal canteen is a casual restaurant with a smaller menu of smaller items compared to supernormal in the city.
The do have the lobster bun too however. Personally, this is the least worthwhile dish for me as it is so small and costs $17 for one bun.
The gave every table complimentary peanuts roasted with some seaweed which tasted just amazing!

It was lovely to see they have a traditional Jake as charcoal grill where the chefs actually uses fans too when grilling. We really enjoy the sea bream ceviche dish as well as fried school prawns, they were he highlights for me.

The grilled dishes were good. However, I felt they super slightly heavy handed with the salt for the king mushrooms.
Most of their dishes are on the smaller end so if your hungry, it is probably more worthwhile getting their banquet for $65pp.
Gan Gan
Good food but if you are in a rush this place is not for you. It’s as if they had to plant and harvest the the grain, hunt for the chicken just after you order. A simple dinner is stretched out for a few hours even though the place was empty
Bruce Symons
The way to enjoy this dining experience is to have 6 or 7 dishes ( the servings aren't big) and everyone shares. All the dishes are a taste sensation. The menu was fully explained and the service was friendly and quick. It's a very laid back ambiance which all adds up to a great dining experience. The only trade off was it's quite noisy but that won't stop us going back.
Memtree
Absolutely delicious! The flavours, the freshness of the prawn, the famous lobster bun lived up to its name and we had just the right amount of food. Highly recommend this place!
The Casual Diner
Will come back for:
+ School prawns
+ King fish sashimi
+ Tsukune, grilled mushroom and grilled fish yakitori
+ Twice cook duck bao

We have tried the original Supernormal branch in the city and loved the food. So we were curious how this St Kilda branch compared to those. Supernormal serves heightened flavored Japanese inspired dishes. I particularly liked the generous serving of school prawns (lots of texture, fried savoury bits with a nice tang in the after taste) - I must say, the left over crunchy bits would go well on a bit of steam rice :-) The king fish sashimi was also deliciously fresh and well seasoned. We then shared a serving of all the yakitoris, all were really nicely grilled, smokey and well seasoned (the liver was our least favourite, but that is a personal thing). And finally, we loved the twice cooked duck bao - this fell apart with a spoon and was delicious with the sauces in a bao. We did find that the lobster roll was tiny, and didn’t wow us for the price you pay. An overall good experience, with great service and a great view of Albert Parks.
PedGetsFed
Food that veers between delicious and average, a muddled theme between laid back canteen and fine dining ish prices I can how customers could love/ hate this place.
Don't bother with the lobster roll and get the mushroom noodles and the duck bao.
OPERAKAT
As a last minute decision on a cold Friday night dashed in for a quick meal and happily sat at the windows with a selection of the outrageously delicious pumpkin salad, prawns and soba noodle dish with a glass or two including a lovely Spanish Monastell

Big fan of Supernormal in the city, and also all of Chef Andrew McConnell’s restaurants. Went here on a Saturday night and was greeted with friendly staff. The service was good overall with attentive and friendly staff.

We had the king brown mushrooms, chicken liver, chicken thigh, chicken tsukuna, lobster roll and the raw king fish with orange dashi and finger lime. The king fish and the tsukuna were the best of the lot. Packed with flavors and leaves you wanting more. The rest were good but nothing special.

My rating of a 3 is not just reflective of the food but the overall experience. The prices need some adjustment to justify the servings. It would easily be 4 stars if not for the steep pricing. I think it’s indicative of why the restaurant was quiet on a Saturday night. Adjust the price because the food is good.
The Last One Piece
Too much fuss? We had high expectation as the city Supernormal has been awarded a Hat so i thought try their sister shop.. Many of the dishes I feel could be made else where half of the price or at home. Feel as if Im paying a premium to eat on their table. Service was a little low on the tentativeness. St Kilda has few Japanese options to choose so this shop might not be it for us. Maybe I was expecting a little too much Japanese element from here..
The City Lane
MELBOURNE | Supernormal Canteen is the latest incarnation of the space that’s housed owner Andrew McConnell’s restaurants Golden Fields and Bar Luxembourg in recent years. It’s a revival of the popup he ran in Fitzroy.

Very disappointed. I never left any reviews in my life, but couldn't sit quite about this one. 1. Service was, after were given menu and time to think, only after, during ordering were told the items we want are finished for the day....probably 3 out of out of ea section were not available. Should of told us at the start ! 2. Food itself... very very plain.... school prawns more like fetus prawns... crab bun ? more bun and sugar than anything else. Calamari ? really ? 2 calamari's cut up into 6 pieces ? sirloin - not seasoned. dumplings had undercooked dough. 3. whiskey, $18 for 20ml ??? 4. price, $180 for 3 people ? guys, at least charge accordingly so people won't be upset about poor quality food. sorry, but worst place we've been to. any small clayton chinese $hits all over you. Hope the place in the city is different.
World In A Bite
Food 2: delicious fusion Japanese!!

Atmosphère & décors 1: love the atmosphere

Service 0.5: service was a bit slow. It was a bit hard to get attention ⚠️

Dinner at Supernormal Canteen. Delicious! True canteen style we ordered from our menu cards; the pickled vegetables, raw bream, raw tuna, lobster rolls and the lamb pancakes. The raw food was refreshing and tasty with pear and peaches as accompaniments and pops to flavour from fresh wasabi. Lobster rolls, always a winner (but at $17 each they are pricey), the cumin lamb was probably a winner for value for money, five pancakes with a good serving of pulled cumin lamb and pickles. Our waiter recommended the margarita that was so delicious. Good work supernormal, quality service and a great dining experience.
Love2Eat
Underwhelming. I’ve had the banquet at Supernormal in the CBD so was keen to try ala carte items. Started with the whiting yakitori which was bit too boney to enjoy, butter lettuce which was just a pile of lettuce for $12, and heirloom tomato tofu salad which had an interesting tangy/spicy dressing but no sight of tofu.
The chicken n prawn dumplings were tasty, duck leg bao well cooked n meaty, and the peanut butter parfait delivered on being the crowd pleaser. I think you’d come to Supernormal for the popular dishes that they’re known for - lobster roll, lamb bao, parfait. And don’t expect much from the rest.
Anna
NOT THE SUPERNORMAL YOU HEAR ABOUT BASED IN THE CITY! This place is run very differently to the original store in the city. Staff knew 100% you won't be full with their set menu (8 courses but one serve is split between 2 people), and didn't dare ask how the food was at any point in time.
Business model is based on attracting new customers with no interest to keep prior customers coming back.
I've eaten at most of the popular Asian fusion restaurants in Melbourne, and this is by far the most disappointing. Don't waste your money, and go to MrMiyagi or Chin Chins instead!
Nicholas Koh
Wow....I feel like I’ve been scammed after ordering the “banquet” set course. If you work out the cost of individually ordering each dish, it’s $130 which is same same cost as set menu for 2 ($65/pp x 2). I naturally assumed you’d get TWO servings as set menus should provide better value, but you only get ONE.

Two servings of the set menu would have been the perfect quantity to be full. As this wasn’t the case, we left hungry and spent $130 for 2 on just food! See photos for yourself.

Don’t get the banquet set menu!!
Nicolas
THIS WAS SO DISAPPOINTING. I heard good things about this place but it's completely overpriced for what you get and nothing wowed me that would make me come back for more. I seriously left this place feeling unsatisfied and ripped off and still hungry. Yes, some of the dishes did taste nice, like the tuna and dumplings but for the money you are forking out for these things I can get a more complete meal somewhere else. The kicker for me was the zucchini flower dish that literally had part of a zucchini flower...i think. I wish I took photos of that dish in particular because it would be quite funny if I wasn't extremely disappointed by it. I don't know if it was supposed to be fine dining at it's best but I personally want to leave an establishment feeling satisfied both by the food and the experience and unfortunately it did neither for me. They seem to be pleasing a lot of people but I am definitely not one of them.
Lily Rose
Was really looking forward to this but was disappointed. Overpriced food with tiny portions, we left hungry and $300 out of pocket. Service subpar as well.
Robert Koh
This place sux. Overpriced, ridiculously small portioned pretentious food. Waiters constantly trying to upsell you too. Wagyu beef was nothing more than paper thin salted cold cuts. Super lame. Avoid.
Coner Ellie
I don't know what this place want to do. Japanese street food??? Japan doesn't have street food anyway. All I can say is fusion confusion.I won't come back again.
Marc
It’s okay but not amazing. We were in a group of 8 and ordered the family banquet.

The atmosphere has a great vibe. It’s edgy without being too loud and they seem to have a good mix of spaces for groups to couples.

The service is a little disappointing verging, ever so slightly, on belligerent. I’m not sure why a waiter has to give off the vibe that the customer is an inconvenience to his or her day. If you don’t enjoy hospitality, go and find something else.

The food is creative, interesting and vibrant with the banquet menu ($65 pp) providing a very diverse selection. A warning that you may need to coach the staff to bring the earlier dishes closer together. For example we had about 20 minutes in between a small bowl of peanuts and some pickles before the next dish which was a small slice of sashimi - at 20:30 folks are hungry!

All in all it’s worth a try.
@twogoodtoresist
The vibe at supernormal canteen is very relaxed and the food comes out super quick which is fantastic. While the pricing is quite high for rather small portions, the food is super tasty and unique. Our top picks include the chicken and prawn dumplings, the heirloom tomato and tofu salad and without a doubt the peanut butter parfait!
Alexandra Bloom
I was sad to see the once spotless Luxembourg kitchen and bar look in need of a clean and of more thoughtful display.

My excitement that our request to sit at the bar and placed right near the kitchen quickly changed to feeling uncomfortable based on the communication between those manning the floor and the kitchen.

I personally found the food heavy not very exciting for the money charged. But can see others enjoying it happily.

The most disappointing and almost infuriating part of my subnormal experience was with the lamb pancake (bao cut in half). I appreciated being informed that we could get more bao/pancake if we wanted.

As soon as it looked like we were on our second last, an eager wait staff asked if we would like more. We agreed. At this point I suspected upsell and remembered to keep it in the memory bank.

Less than an hour after being seated our meal was over. Forgoing desert, it was straight to bill. Looking over the bill I noted item of $2.60 for extra pancake was added. With raising blood pressure, I promptly paid and left.

Is Supernormal Canteen so hard up that they need to charge an extra $2.60 on a $200 bill for a halved repurposed bao?

So disappointed.

I love this place. Food is packed full of flavour and even though whenever we order we feel like it won't be enough, we struggle to finish the last dish. Supernormal is one of the few places to cater for non-drinkers. Their mocktails are amazing and I highly recommend!
GG
What a great addition to Fitzroy St - great food, decent priced wine, and lots of different experiences despite not being a huge menu. Will become my go to local restaurant for all these reasons. Suffered some initial set backs in processes like any new restaurant but I have kept returning regardless & haven't been overall disappointed once. Exactly what was needed in this location - proper casual fine dining.
Snackloverbaby
Came in with my partner for a mid week meal. I was actually pretty impressed, I think this is probably the best re incarnation of the space.
I made a booking - expecting it to be busy and was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't over run by people loitering in the doorway waiting for a table.
We sat at the bar and thoroughly enjoyed the meal and the banter from the staff. Definitely worth a crack if you're feeling a bit lush - it's not the cheapest dinner going around but definitely tasty. It can be a fair bit noisy once service gets going but that's expected of most places.
I appreciated the surprise beer option on the menu as well.
I wouldn't recommend the lobster roll - I don't think it's worth the price but when one goes to Supernormal, one gets a lobster roll.
Mowick
Was excited to dine in at canteen. However, we havd yakitori and the meat was overcooked and dried. Just okay taste with teriyaki sauce. Definitely not coming back. However, the staff was friendly
Rolley Makan
Was excited with the news of supernornal open in st kilda.
Went there with couple of friends.
The food was okay, the yakitori was a little dry. Will not coming back. City was a lot better.

My boyfriend and I were excited to try Supernormal Canteen for our anniversary. After having the banquet in the City restaurant, we were pretty optimistic about our visit. Unfortunately, we felt a little let down by our meal. The staff were friendly and attentive, which was a positive. However, the food was just average. For us, the banquet experience felt like a subpar version of the city banquet.

As I'm a vegetarian, I was given the option of the alternative banquet. The menu looked promising, however it was pretty much just a whole bunch of veggies. I know that as a vegetarian, I'm limited in what I can eat, but there is such a thing as too many veggies. I was luckily able to steal some bao from my boyfriend's meat filled meal, to satisfy my hunger. Whilst most of the dishes did taste quite nice, a salad I had, tasted off and really sour. The redeeming dish would've been the salted caramel desert we had, which left me mildly satisfied. I probably won't come back to the St Kilda Canteen, but will definitely try the city branch again.

DO: The lobster rolls!!!! Duh. However the yakitori, lamb and fish were sensational.

DON'T: Forget the desserts. The famous salted caramel Parfait and the fish custard were very Instagrammable.

TIP: Sit at the bar so you watch and chat to the man, the legend, Allan Eccles their development chef. Cracking bloke

This venue is a long way off the original in the CBD. The food was ok but just wasn't cooked as well as at the original and seemed to lack the flavours, it just didn't hit the spot. The cocktail list was also a long way off too. The staff were great and its a cool little vibe though. If we hadn't eaten at the original possibly this review would be a little less critical, but next time will certainly be heading back to the CBD.

It's time for a midweek catch up with a couple of girlfriends and the chosen venue is Supernormal Canteen. Kirsty and I arrive together just before 7pm and we're informed by the lady in charge that she can either squeeze another stool in the window in a space that is really for 2 or we wait until 8:30pm.

Having absolutely loved Supernormal in the CBD, I came here last night with my partner for dinner with high expectations. We arrived at 6:30 and were able to get seats at the window- we didn't realise how lucky even that was! People who arrived shortly after us were told there was a 30-45 minute wait!
We started with some wines- there is a good variety on the menu and a decent range in prices as well - some as cheap as $8 a glass!
For food- we had the prawns from the 'snack' menu to start. We were impressed with the portion size (especially for $10) and they were crunchy and delicious as well, with some great seasoning on top.
Then we had the Lobster Roll (a must from Supernormal) which were really nice and served on soft brioche buns.
We then enjoyed the Pan-Fried Pork Dumplings. These were enjoyable although pretty standard.
We finished with the Lamb with Pancakes. This was absolutely delicious! Well cooked, flavoursome and worked beautifully with the fluffy steamed Bao pancakes. There was also some delicious pickle mixed in with the lamb - I would highly recommend this dish.
The prices are reasonable, and the portion sizes are good, and the service is great as well. I would definitely recommend Supernormal Canteen.

We had been hanging out for Supernormal to open for months and we were set to visit on their first Saturday night but we were foiled at the last minute by our babysitter not showing!

But the lovely lovely staff at Supernormal Canteen let us come and get takeaway so we didn't miss out. Everything was delicious! School prawns were crunchy and moorish! All the dumplings were light and tasty. The lamb was one of the best we have ever eaten along side light as air rice pancakes! The Lobster Rolls never disappoint! To finish off the chocolate peanut butter parfait was mind blowing! So glad Supernormal Canteen has come to the Southside and we will be giving them a regular (maybe every night!) workout!
Love All Good Food
Finally opened and pop in for dinner tonight, love the little tapas, only thing the rib was too fatty, be a good place to hung out for small bites and drinks, city one is better in my opinion.
