When it comes to dining experience, you cannot top this place. Food was delicious and well prepared and presented, blending modern with traditional Chinese cooking - so well executed, with flavours in every dish that is rich, intense and wholesome. Service was impeccable and OMG that attention to detail they put in - from the decor to the utensils to the setting to even the bathrooms - this place has the complete package. The inviting and warm atmosphere completes the package. Overall the dining experience is just simply flawless. This is what it's all about folks!

Great ambience, delicious food - incredible dinner!

⭐️ I first found this restaurant thanks to the Entertainment Book. This offers a 25% discount on menu items. I am so in love with this place!

📍 Located on one of the main streets in St Kilda, there’s a lot of parking options but a bit of a rare find for free parking.

👥 The staff are so friendly. The dishes were all served very quickly.... BUT not too quickly! I find that at some of these styled restaurants, if it comes out too fast.. I question it a bit. This was the perfect timing, so I knew it was fresh and cooked for us.

🍽 The food quality is fantastic and absolutely full of flavour. Everything was absolutely delicious and I just could not stop eating.. even when I was full.

💚 Delicious flavoursome food
💚 Great ambience and intimate lighting within the restaurant
💚 Offers a bar, and seating at the bar
💚 Friendly staff
💚 Prices are very fair for what you receive

Probably the best eye fillet I’ve ever had, so tender! Adding the Guangzhou honey pepper sauce makes it special and a creative way of cooking eye fillet. Other dishes, such as pork belly and beef, are too salty to us. The wagyu baos are ok, I like the outside more than the inside meat, coz a bit oily to me. But overall, I really like Mahjong, shall come over again on a Friday night!

I came here for the celebration of Mahjong's 10th birthday and had such an amazing time , it truly was a testament to hard work paying off as the owner (Max) was telling us in his speech that it was not an easy journey to get to where he was today. It was also wonderful to see so many loyal customers who I would believe have now become friends after continually returning to Mahjong for a decade.

The dumplings that were served that night were all juicy succulent and plump, my favorite behind the signature won ton in chili oil. The suckling pig brought out that night was also a highlight of my night, I literally ate so much that thinking about it brings me great shame.

Thankyou Mahjong for having me a part of such a special moment and I cannot wait to come back and do the all you can eat menu some day

Crab and prawn dumpling was lovely but the chilli beef was mehhhh. Flavour was great but the meat was chewy and unpleasant... could have been amazing if only the meat was soft and tender. Service was decent but i didn't appreciate it when the waitress simply dumped the dumplings on the table and waa off beforw i could ask for soy sauce and chilli. Also orderd the eye fillet which was quite nice and fried ice cream for dessert which was yummy.

Mahjong was a highly enjoyable restaurant to enjoy a birthday at, as the staff were kind and the pricing for the quality and quantity of food was magnificent! Highly recommend the beef in black bean sauce and the peaking duck pancakes! The only negative was how long the food took to serve! But a place I will defiantly be visiting again soon!

Friday night had CBF cooking so skipped down the road to Mahjong for some fried rice.  I have walked past squillions of times but never had the urge to go in - this is due to not being a massive Chinese cuisine eater.
My thoughts, firstly the restaurants is nice - lovely decor.  The staff were attentive and very nice.  My fried rice was nice however the size for the price = not value for $$$. Judging by the other reviews I am not the only one to have this opinion. Also, from the other reviews, It seems the yum cha is the way to go here.

Fancier than your average dumpling house but not quite fine dining Mahjong remains my number 1 dumpling restaurant in st kilda. Come here several times over last two years and quality of food and consistency of service has remained the same. Lau's may be be better food but at all things considered this still comes out on top.

This is a seriously outstanding restaurant. We dine here regularly. The $35 yum cha is unbelievably good value. The food is fresh, tasty and beautifully cooked. The chilli prawn wontons are sublime, and the steamed fish is always perfectly cooked. The chefs here use their black bean to perfection, and the food arrives promptly and without fuss. The service is attentive and personal. The vibe is bustling and vibrant, and the fitout is great. Coco is an amazing host. During summer, the windows open at the front for alfresco dining, which we love.Highly recommended...

If there was ever a time I was going to need to be rolled out of a restaurant, today would have been that day. I came to Mahjong today with my partner and a friend and we did the $35 all you can eat yum cha. The food is made fresh to order and you are given an extensive menu to choose from.
The restaurant interior is stylish and modern and has some great ambiance.
The service is friendly but can be quite slow, which isn't really too bad for a leisurely yum cha lunch.
The food is phenomenal. Every dish we ordered was made fresh and was delicious. Every dish packed a punch and had a great depth of flavour.
We ate our way through 20 dishes (19 menu items- we had the Peking duck pancake twice!) and the staff brought us each dish, beautifully prepared with enough for all of us.
Drinks were reasonably priced- Beers were around $7.50-8 each and my cocktail (The Jong) was $16.50. The cokes were 4.50 and came in real glass bottles, which is something I definitely appreciated.
I was blown away by the quality and the generosity of the dishes at Mahjong and am already recommending my friends and family go there! I know I will definitely be back!

What can I say? I love Chinese food and since its so difficult to make up mind which dishes to select with so many delicious options, yum cha is a perfect way for me to enjoy it. In Melbourne, we are very lucky to have several locations where to fulfill our yum cha cravings. At Mahjong, we started our journey with a selection of Dim Sums. Dim Sum are little parcels of happiness, Chinese version of tapas that are usually served in bamboo baskets. They have an extensive list of dumplings, starting from ginger prawns, crab meat and prawn, hot and sour pork to vegetarian ones. I found their dumplings to be fresh, tender and steamed to perfection. They were all full of flavors. You just can’t stop at one!

Thanks to the dining experience in Mahjong, 'FORCE' me to create an account on Zomato purposely, just to share my precious moment with someone who are searching for modern dining experience with Chinese cuisine. The first impression of this restaurant changed my previous perspective of Chinese Cuisine. They tried to merge both western culture with Chinese heritage, to deliver a fusion dining experience who never had at other places. The most important is their food was beyond my expectation! As a rice lover I ordered their mahjong fried rice with pork and prawn, it was full of 'wok' aroma and fried perfectly. Pan fried Shanghai Dumpling for the side dish was pretty impressed too, crispy thin skin with juicy filling, six pieces of those are just too less for a Chinese food lover! Would definitely recommend this to those who love to try a different dining experience yet authentic Chinese cuisine!

Terrific restaurant particularly for the Sunday $35 flat rate yum cha. The food is superb. Our party of four tried numerous dishes (see photos) and we loved them all. To us this is superior modern Chinese fare. We couldn't fault one dish. The wine list is great and the service very attentive, efficient and friendly. It added up to a perfect Sunday. There is not a doubt we'll be back and soon.

Lovely ambience and the food reminded me of mixed cantonese and northern chinese flavours. Service was faultless. We had a variety of dumplings, peking duck pancake, salt pepper calamari before having fried rice, pepper beef and steamed fish. For my asian palate, the prawn pork wonton with chilli oil and ginger prawn dumplings were really delicious and the pepper beef melts in your mouth literally. The steamed fish was delicate and cooked perfectly. The only let down was the fried rice which was slightly dry. Overall, definitely a place I would return again.

Had dinner at Mahjong last night with a friend. Ordered the Mahjong Rose, Cantonese crispy duck, pork belly stir fry and steamed mixed vegs. The dishes were 'light' in flavor, wasn't heavily doused with sauces or salt. I could taste the original flavors of each dish and the duck deserve a special mention. Moist succulent tender meat with just the right amount of crispiness on the skin. Wasn't gamey in terms of smell as well. Pork belly i found was a tad bit over fried, i found the meat to be dry. Would have been better if the meat was cut thicker and shorter. Vegetables was done in a simple manner.....the sweetness of it reflects the freshness of the greens. Would go back to sample the duck and quail.

Posted by FoodieAboutTown on Monday, April 20, 2015 · Leave a Comment   Gotta love dumplings and dumplings after a long walk they are even better, though you tend to avoid the nice fried ones when you have had to do 10kms for the pleasure – trade in fried for a cold glass of Riesling! Mahjong has had a little make over and is now going with a more casual approach to stop by and enjoy a variety of great dishes with a cold beer anytime, less white table cloths and more hawker bar. The staff are still the same lovely peeps and can’t wait to make sure you are sufficiently stuffed with wonderful food and something to sip. The menu is extensive, with plenty to choose from across the steamed baskets of dumplings with prawn, crab, duck, chicken and pork, you can enjoy crispy honey chicken, BBQ pork buns or Peking duck. Larger dishes bring all the favourites including Szechuan Chill Beef, Sweet and Sour Chicken Singapore Chilli Prawn and plenty of rice, noodles and vegetables to go on the side. The Pork Sui Mai were text book lovely, little open dumplings with juicy, aromatic pork filling – happy face! The Spring Onion pancake was a naughty carb treat but it was worth every calories! Little firm slices of doughy, spring onion pancake – would be perfect for mopping up some sweet and sour sauce!! Hot and sour prawn and pork dumplings had the perfect level of heat, swimming in that wonderful sauce, my mouth is watering thinking about it! The mini ‘numb’ Wagyu burgers were a tiny little spicy steak sandwich! They were fabulous, nice generous portion, lovely soft white rolls with plentiful Wagyu and a good pinch of Szechuan pepper for that numbing effect. LOVED!! Top spot, my new fave dumpling house BUT one complaint – they have pulled delivery to South Melbourne on Menulog – come back Mahjong I love having my fave dumplings delivered!! Oh well, just have to get my walking shoes on…..

Went to mahjong on Thursday night with 3 girlfriends , we had set menu, $59 per head . Including 10 different items to share, my favourite was the wagu bun and the high country eye fillet steak. The wine list also well pick by the house semellier and on fare price. Service was spot on, I would say mahjong is the one of the best chinese restaurant in Melbourne. Highly recommended!

New mahjong. Not sure if this is a new place or not, because the staff seem to know people, but anyway it was a good night, delicious meal from the shared table part of the menu and then we chose two regions of China to try dishes from. had the Grandma tofu and the 3 shots chicken, both delicious and plenty. Good wine list and some cocktails for at the start. Rolled out onto Fitrzroy Street very content.

John Sampson. Been going to Mahjong regularly since it opened and have never been disappointed.
The new refurbishment suits it down to a tee with an open comfortable modern look and great atmosphere.
Favourite foods are Ginger Prawn Dumplings (as good as you'll get anywhere), Duck Spring Rolls, Lamb Pockets, Behjing Duck Pancakes etc etc.
Mains are the perfect size with rice or noodles to match - all delicious.

For those who want a new style of Chinese food experience. Modern new fit out and a modern new menu. Just like some of the hip places in Hong Kong or Shanghai and certainly not "old style" Chinese dining. And about time Melbourne had a place like this.
A full bar, bar food to full dining dishes tho not he usual fare.
Friendly staff who know their customers and the food round out the experience.

Whatever By Mahjong - cool new name and makeover. We called by Mahjong last week and were surprised by a whole new look and menu and bar area. After a long time on Fitzroy Street (Up the pretty end) it was ready for a reinvention. And wow!!!! Beautiful Asian face images on 3 walls. A huge marble bar and high tables to sit and drink at, with a small bar food menu. Then to the right a new dining space with more beautiful images, casual place settings of retro Chinese crockery and menus on placemats. Food was refreshed too, from last time we were here. Some shared items and some dishes chosen by the region. Just a very cool upgrade overall. Will be back - often.

2017 edits.

So after a few years.. I have decided to go back there and have another all you can eat Yumcha.

I was super excited since the last time I was here it was really really good. However I wish I could say the same again.. But wouldn't go that far.

Service for a fair bit better but still forgot a lot of the orders (maybe on purpose since we ordered quite a bit lol).

Peking duck pancakes were super nice. Have to say even better than some restaurant who specialised in Peking duck. The pancake was very soft and it was made to order.

Fried rice was very good. And all wonton in spicy soup was wonderful.

However.. The authentic, simple and must order dishes like shumai or ha gao (prawn dumplings) were not up to par.. It doesn't have enough meat in there and therefore. Doesn't quite hit the spot for us.

For the price we paid..tea were not included as a part of all you can eat (and we were charged $7 for it.. Which was pretty steep). All in all though. Pretty good. But not authentic in anyway.

-----

Amazing all you can eat $39 yumcha!. Now. I'm a local and I was not expecting anything from this place. I walked pass it like 100 times and I judged my partner for saying "my dad like this restaurant".

We took a shot and tried their yumcha.. Expecting nothing at all because we have our absolute fave in city. And I was pleasantly surprised at what I got!

Menus are hugely wide range. Which is probably for the best because most people that go here are not Asians (so.. Chicken feet wouldn't really doing well here alone without something else). Dimsums are including; some classics like shumai, pork dumplings and so on.. Then.. Fried Calamari (super fresh. We ordered like 3 plays of them..) scallops (super nice) , blue crap (my partner gone cray cray) and peking duck (not so good..) . Wow! I had to asked if all these are really all you can eat!! And we haven't even reach main dishes like fried rice, sweet and sour, broccoli in garlic sauce to Angus beef stir fry!

After crazy eating you can then have their super awesome banana fritter and fried ice cream! (I love it...) which also included in $39!

I have to say.. I left really really really impressed. To the point that my partner called all his family and we ended up there again a week after that (with like 15 more people and they were all pleased because eventhough some people doesn't like dumplings there are 20 more things you can order) and I'm going back again with my friends this week!

I do have to point out that I totally understand some customers will not like the place. When we were there the first time and the place were packed. Their service fallen behind quite a lot and I witnessed table next to me complained and had pretty much no food at all (because they made it per order). Service isn't the best in the world. But I never expect that from all you can eat (unless it's Conservatory! Lol). I think they have potentials and if you ever go, get their chilli chicken with buk choy dumplings. They are amazing :)

Very nice. Had a lovely meal here with friends a few weeks ago. We chose a mystery banquet option, where you pay just under $60 per head, tell the waitress if you have any dietary requirements, and then get brought all kinds of yummy food. We had about 5 different sets of dumplings, a number of other entrees and a selection of varied mains. The food was delicious (there was just one dumpling that we didn't like, maybe the football dumpling?), and it was enough to satisfy us. Our only surprise was that the banquet didn't include any dessert or tea and coffee option, so we got to the end of the main meals and were waiting to see if there'd be dessert or something to end the meal. In hindsight, we hadn't asked at the start if there'd be dessert, so that's probably our fault. We thought the food was excellent, and the service was mostly good. I'd eat here again!

Excellent Yum Cha!. Beautiful decor and fantastic, fresh yum cha! The service was great and the food was wonderful with plenty of vegetarian/vegan options. I went here with family (who are not all vegetarian) who had been to many other yum cha places, such as The Shark Fin, and apparently Mahjong was the best! The consensus was that the vegetarian curry puffs were the best anyone has ever eaten! Highly recommended!

We chose this place just randomly, as we walked by. Food was delicious! It's on the pricey side, but we didn't mind. Food came and everything looked great! We ordered rice, pork belly, some chicken dish, duck and greens. The waiter recommended the beers and he also recommended the popular dishes, so that was nice.

Very hip Chinese restaurant, with a cool bar and a nice cocktail selection. They do $39 pp all-you-can-eat yum cha on Tuesdays! Will have to try it next time. We had the crab and prawn dumplings, Dan Dan noodles, Kung fu chicken and steamed Chinese broccoli (although they may have given us Asian greens instead). Some items were slightly pricey, so I would probably recommend getting the unlimited "yum cha" next time... But we did not regret having the delicious fried ice cream (they even split one portion into 3 minis for us because we were sharing)! Great service and fab experience!

Probably the best and freshest yum cha in Melbourne. Lost a star for not bringing the desserts even after asking three time, eventually we gave up. Frequent and generously delivered, staff all lovely even on a very busy day. Good options for gluten free although we had to ask a few times. Many different dumpling options, calamari and prawn toast were super fresh and fantastic. All in all delicious and can’t wait to come back.

Absolutely amazing!!! I would 100% recommend. Came for dinner because there was a bit of a wait at Milk the Cow down the road. So glad we did. The place was practically empty; really not sure why, as the food was superb. Pork buns and dumplings were delicious and food came out pretty quickly. The waiters were very attentive. The house red/Mahjong shiraz also very nice. The clear winner, however, was the duck. Succulent, crispy skin, amazing flavours. We ordered a second because it was so amazing. And I don't eat duck. Next time I'm in the area I am definitely calling in.
