Review Mahjong Restaurant - St Kilda

Ciara Wright
We were a group of 10 people and the staff were great, very attentive from the moment we got in there until we left. The food is always amazing when I’ve eaten here so was glad to share the experience with some of my friends who hadn’t been here before. 100% recommend!

As a Catonese, to be honest, the taste is alright. The wonton filling is quite salty and can't taste the prawn and the skin is thick. The Singapore noodles were OK, can't taste the curry. The take away portion is small so the price for takeaway is very expensive.

We chose this place just randomly, as we walked by. Food was delicious! It's on the pricey side, but we didn't mind. Food came and everything looked great! We ordered rice, pork belly, some chicken dish, duck and greens. The waiter recommended the beers and he also recommended the popular dishes, so that was nice.

$39 all you can eat yumcha was a pretty good deal if you can eat a lot. the food was decent though the dumplings were not. the dumplings skins were thick and starchy. dessert was good. staff were helpful and efficient. the restaurant was nice & cosy.
A Doctor's Orders
Very hip Chinese restaurant, with a cool bar and a nice cocktail selection. They do $39 pp all-you-can-eat yum cha on Tuesdays! Will have to try it next time. We had the crab and prawn dumplings, Dan Dan noodles, Kung fu chicken and steamed Chinese broccoli (although they may have given us Asian greens instead). Some items were slightly pricey, so I would probably recommend getting the unlimited "yum cha" next time... But we did not regret having the delicious fried ice cream (they even split one portion into 3 minis for us because we were sharing)! Great service and fab experience!

Beautiful interior, beautiful friendly staff and amazing food. As a coeliac there wasn't a huge variety for me however they DID have gluten free soy sauce which made up for everything.. that and the chilli sauce omg
Rob Jack
Probably the best and freshest yum cha in Melbourne. Lost a star for not bringing the desserts even after asking three time, eventually we gave up. Frequent and generously delivered, staff all lovely even on a very busy day. Good options for gluten free although we had to ask a few times. Many different dumpling options, calamari and prawn toast were super fresh and fantastic. All in all delicious and can’t wait to come back.

Absolutely amazing!!! I would 100% recommend. Came for dinner because there was a bit of a wait at Milk the Cow down the road. So glad we did. The place was practically empty; really not sure why, as the food was superb. Pork buns and dumplings were delicious and food came out pretty quickly. The waiters were very attentive. The house red/Mahjong shiraz also very nice. The clear winner, however, was the duck. Succulent, crispy skin, amazing flavours. We ordered a second because it was so amazing. And I don't eat duck. Next time I'm in the area I am definitely calling in.

Food and service couldn't have been better. The management and staff were unbelievably friendly and attentive. Great atmosphere and fun place to go to. 1st time my wife and I have been but we've certainly be back. Just discovered a new favourite place.

Yummy made to order food. Good service and nice atmosphere. My family fav place for dumplings. Soy steamed fish is a must try

Love the Szechuan hot and sour soup and the juicy pork dumplings are super juicy. Great spot for Yum Cha and catch up with friends.

When it comes to dining experience, you cannot top this place. Food was delicious and well prepared and presented, blending modern with traditional Chinese cooking - so well executed, with flavours in every dish that is rich, intense and wholesome. Service was impeccable and OMG that attention to detail they put in - from the decor to the utensils to the setting to even the bathrooms - this place has the complete package. The inviting and warm atmosphere completes the package. Overall the dining experience is just simply flawless. This is what it's all about folks!

Mahjong is the finest Chinese restaraunt in Melbourne, a great place for an all you can eat Yum Cha without the trollies. You order what you want when you want it! The service and staff are amazing!
Stuart Maltese
Their Saturday/Sunday lunch Yum Cha is my ultimate!! You have to order the Rose! best $28 you will ever spend i say
Heather Fisher
Not your typical Chinese food. Loved it especially the pork belly!! Great meal definitely recommend. Friendly service.
Shawn Bergquist
Amazing food. Every dish was brilliant. Service was amazing. I’m hooked
Simone Forde
We had the Yum Cha special on Sunday and the food was fantastic. They kindly fitted us in without a reservation (though will definitely book next time), service was great and the place had a fabulous atmosphere!
Daniel Burnett
Food was really lovely and very tasty. Service could be improved a little but overall had a lovely lunch experience. Good value for money with there special all you eat Saturday and Sunday offer.
Bradley Fabry
Was the best experience in Melbourne food wise and now I need more but I’m back in Perth 😭😭
Nicole Hansford
Great service and beautiful food. Yum cha food on Saturday and Sunday and grey value all cooked fresh
Leo Cordedda
Amazing food and amazing service. Cannot fault this place at all.
Paul Dick
Fantastic staff - fantastic food, we will be back
Rod Coleman
I was seated then asked to leave because I was on my own and they wanted to serve a minimum of 2 - this despite the menu being yum cha cooked to order and having bar seating in the house. Come back in two hours I was told. Yeah right.

Mahjong was a modern Chinese restaurant serving main and yum cha style dishes. We’ve tried quite a variety of dishes; mandarin beef, peking duck pancake, duck spring roll, lamb pocket, dumplings, crispy crumbed chicken, wagyu buns and sticky rice for dessert. I found most of the dishes pretty tasty, but none really stood out. Service was average also. The ambiance, however, was very cosy and fresh (especially for a Chinese restaurant!) with beautiful murals on the walls, and the spacious venue was perfect for group gatherings.

Great ambience, delicious food - incredible dinner!

⭐️ I first found this restaurant thanks to the Entertainment Book. This offers a 25% discount on menu items. I am so in love with this place!

📍 Located on one of the main streets in St Kilda, there’s a lot of parking options but a bit of a rare find for free parking.

👥 The staff are so friendly. The dishes were all served very quickly.... BUT not too quickly! I find that at some of these styled restaurants, if it comes out too fast.. I question it a bit. This was the perfect timing, so I knew it was fresh and cooked for us.

🍽 The food quality is fantastic and absolutely full of flavour. Everything was absolutely delicious and I just could not stop eating.. even when I was full.

💚 Delicious flavoursome food
💚 Great ambience and intimate lighting within the restaurant
💚 Offers a bar, and seating at the bar
💚 Friendly staff
💚 Prices are very fair for what you receive

6 of us went to eat at Mahjong today. We were greeted by service staff that looked reluctant to serve us. The menu and the staff provided no information on how to order the food, nor the portion size of each dish. When some of the food came, we were shocked at the large portions. We tasted the food and found many of the items unpalatable (eg steamed fish, sichuan tofu, calamari, mandarin beef) - low quality meats and fish, cooked that were so greasy and salty that we could not eat more than a mouthful. Hence we could not finish the food. The manager came to our table and rudely told us that unless we finished all the food on the table, he would not bring the other items we had ordered. Sure, we did not want to waste food either but we did not know the portion size, nor did we expect the food to taste so bad.
We gave our feedback to the restaurant manager KoKo/CoCo(?)that the restaurant staff should let the guests know about the portion size next time. Instead of taking in the feedback fro future improvements, this man said rebutted rudely that it was our own fault that we did not ask the staff about portion sizes of the food. He went on to say that because his restaurant has been doing well for the past 5 years, he saw no reason to amend his menu.
I would never return to this place again. I would caution anyone thinking of eating there - go there only if you want to eat poor quality food, have an unpleasant time served by unfriendly waiters and support a restaurant run by a manager/owner(?) who is arrogant and rude.
Lucas
We went for dinner during the week and the food was pretty good.

The owner however, was extremely rude and we where all shocked by his rudeness.
His communication skills were extremely poor
HPig
Food was good and there was substantial variety but the service was too slow. Didn't get everything we ordered from the yum cha all you can eat challenge menu.
Marc Davis
Great service, beer on tap, handmade dumplings, and modern surroundings overlooking Albert Park. And $39 endless yum cha on weekends - can’t go wrong!

Did I mention beer?
Ken Leung
If you want to do yum cha, go to the city or box hill etc. Average food in the average quality restaurant slow service and food taste like pre package. What is worst staff manner never going back again
Disey
Sunday yum cha here turned out to be frustrating experience. we were at first dazzled by the large number of choices for $35 per head, all you can eat menu. The food was ok, but the service was woeful. Asian lady waiters wandering around with completely blank looks, their somnambulant expressions worsened by the tardiness of the kitchen. It took a really long time for anything to emerge.. our complaints met with indifference. The 1.30pm sitting didn’t conclude till 3.30 with 5 dishes not seeing the light of day
Jaime Eat&Fit
Probably the best eye fillet I’ve ever had, so tender! Adding the Guangzhou honey pepper sauce makes it special and a creative way of cooking eye fillet. Other dishes, such as pork belly and beef, are too salty to us. The wagyu baos are ok, I like the outside more than the inside meat, coz a bit oily to me. But overall, I really like Mahjong, shall come over again on a Friday night!
Abhinay Ponnam
Very poor customer service and impolite
Iam giving 0* out of 5 .Especially one who guy doing costumer service(his name max giving very poor service) no smile on his face very bad treating
Vivian
I came here for the celebration of Mahjong's 10th birthday and had such an amazing time , it truly was a testament to hard work paying off as the owner (Max) was telling us in his speech that it was not an easy journey to get to where he was today. It was also wonderful to see so many loyal customers who I would believe have now become friends after continually returning to Mahjong for a decade.

The dumplings that were served that night were all juicy succulent and plump, my favorite behind the signature won ton in chili oil. The suckling pig brought out that night was also a highlight of my night, I literally ate so much that thinking about it brings me great shame.

Thankyou Mahjong for having me a part of such a special moment and I cannot wait to come back and do the all you can eat menu some day
Mathur.mihir
Extremely rude service. Waiter seemed to take it upon himself to profile us as people “he knows who will not finish the unlimited food” (whatever group he was trying to imply we are with that comment) before commenting on how we “didn’t touch one dish” despite that not being the case. Why have an unlimited option if you’re going to be so cheap about it and moreover so rude to customers? Shocking really.
Lin B
Crab and prawn dumpling was lovely but the chilli beef was mehhhh. Flavour was great but the meat was chewy and unpleasant... could have been amazing if only the meat was soft and tender. Service was decent but i didn't appreciate it when the waitress simply dumped the dumplings on the table and waa off beforw i could ask for soy sauce and chilli. Also orderd the eye fillet which was quite nice and fried ice cream for dessert which was yummy.

Mahjong was a highly enjoyable restaurant to enjoy a birthday at, as the staff were kind and the pricing for the quality and quantity of food was magnificent! Highly recommend the beef in black bean sauce and the peaking duck pancakes! The only negative was how long the food took to serve! But a place I will defiantly be visiting again soon!
The Carbashians
Chose this venue for a group mid-week dinner. Found food was average, way over priced and staff were rude. I've been all around the world and have never had service as awful as this. The dumplings were unauthentic and rubbery, portion sizes were tiny. Would not recommend. The only reason I gave this a rating at all was because the chicken dumplings were average

Can’t get better Chinese food in Melbourne,
The south gippsland pork is amazing .
Definitely come back and highly recommend.
Best fried rice ever.
Came here 2weeks ago on the weekend for the "all you can buffet" at 1:30pm with a group of 16-18ppl
Foods were nice but pretty slow service, had to try a couple of times just to get some water to our table, ordering the foods was a hassle, feels like the waiter/waitress was avoiding our table when ordering. Foods took around 30-40mins to come.. for a yam cha place that's a long waiting time for the foods to come.. 2hours buffet went by so fast and most of the time was waiting for the foods to come :/ at least the foods were nice, especially the duck wrap.
Simmyeats.Melb
Friday night had CBF cooking so skipped down the road to Mahjong for some fried rice. I have walked past squillions of times but never had the urge to go in - this is due to not being a massive Chinese cuisine eater.
My thoughts, firstly the restaurants is nice - lovely decor. The staff were attentive and very nice. My fried rice was nice however the size for the price = not value for $$$. Judging by the other reviews I am not the only one to have this opinion. Also, from the other reviews, It seems the yum cha is the way to go here.
James Kendler
Food was of a high standard, however servings were on the small side. What lowered the overall rating was possibly the worst customer service that we have experienced in recent memory. In particular, the manager/owner was the main offender, with his attitude bordering on downright rudeness.
PedGetsFed
Fancier than your average dumpling house but not quite fine dining Mahjong remains my number 1 dumpling restaurant in st kilda. Come here several times over last two years and quality of food and consistency of service has remained the same. Lau's may be be better food but at all things considered this still comes out on top.

Really nice atmosphere for dining with friends and family! Great food and drink! Really like the graffiti on wall! Nice and friendly staff! my favourite is the juicy pork dumplings and the red hand prawn dumplings! People can even hold events at the back! Nice place! Must visit!

what an amazing restaurant!!! having a great meal in there. the food is great the service is perfect. we ordered juicy pork dumplings, ginger prawn dumpling and mahjong fried rice. very good quality. for the drink, we ordered mahjong shiraz is a half bottle wine, nice and smooth taste but also a glass of pinot gris.
very great dining experience in mahjong!!!!

absolutely recommend! friend service and delicious variety of food! The chilli prawn wonton is make by real prawns without other fill up.
we will defiantly visit again.

A really enjoyable place for yum Cha. The food was fresh and tasty with many varieties to choose from. The service quality and our food came at a reasonable time. Will be back definitely.

Our group has eaten here on many occasions previously, but not in recent times. The relatively new fit-out is very good. It looks impressive and seems to work well.
Had yum cha and the list of offerings were plentiful and well thought out. There are lots of options and the dumpling list is extensive.
The quality of the food was lacking. Ingredients used were ordinary. Chicken and beef were below what we expected in terms of taste and texture. Not quite sure what processed type of chicken mixture they use for their honey chicken, but it certainly did not even resemble chicken in taste, smell or texture....don't want to even think about it. Dumplings were OK and the fried rice.....very average.
Service was not rushed or abrasive but not far off. Certainly lacked warmth.
Better places around!

We went on a saturday and had the $35 yum cha at lunch time. The food was amazing and it was served promptly. We will definitely be going back soon!

This is a seriously outstanding restaurant. We dine here regularly. The $35 yum cha is unbelievably good value. The food is fresh, tasty and beautifully cooked. The chilli prawn wontons are sublime, and the steamed fish is always perfectly cooked. The chefs here use their black bean to perfection, and the food arrives promptly and without fuss. The service is attentive and personal. The vibe is bustling and vibrant, and the fitout is great. Coco is an amazing host. During summer, the windows open at the front for alfresco dining, which we love.Highly recommended...
Ted Mac Gregor
The service is bloody shocking no one seems like they want to be here.
You have to flag them down to get anything then when you do finally order it takes ages to come out.
Very very unorganised operation shit fight really .
Food is pretty yummy I would return servings are a tad small so order a lot if u are hungry.
Drink prices are high aswell
The venue is nicely decorated inside

Returned again yesterday took 1 hour to get first dish towards the end of our meal they forgot most of our dishes then told us that there was nothing more coming and kitchen was closed.
Very rude staff we took guests aswell so it was quite embarrassing ..
Caroline Beaney
Mahjong has small serving sizes and more expensive prices when compared to other Chinese restaurants. I do think it's a good place to go for a special treat though. They have lots of dumpling flavours to choose from. We tried the prawn and crab and the duck wontons in a spicy sauce. The obvious favourite were the duck wontons! They were so good!! We also ordered the Dan Dan noodles (dry). Looked a lot different from other Dan Dan noodles that I have tried... But I've only really tried wet Dan Dan noodles. I liked them but found that they weren't all that spicy.

Service could have been better. It was difficult to get their attention. We would have ordered more food but they took to long to return to our table so by this stage we had to go back to work 😅 will probably return there sometime.

Would like to give them a score higher than 3.0 but the serving sizes were a bit too small.

If there was ever a time I was going to need to be rolled out of a restaurant, today would have been that day. I came to Mahjong today with my partner and a friend and we did the $35 all you can eat yum cha. The food is made fresh to order and you are given an extensive menu to choose from.
The restaurant interior is stylish and modern and has some great ambiance.
The service is friendly but can be quite slow, which isn't really too bad for a leisurely yum cha lunch.
The food is phenomenal. Every dish we ordered was made fresh and was delicious. Every dish packed a punch and had a great depth of flavour.
We ate our way through 20 dishes (19 menu items- we had the Peking duck pancake twice!) and the staff brought us each dish, beautifully prepared with enough for all of us.
Drinks were reasonably priced- Beers were around $7.50-8 each and my cocktail (The Jong) was $16.50. The cokes were 4.50 and came in real glass bottles, which is something I definitely appreciated.
I was blown away by the quality and the generosity of the dishes at Mahjong and am already recommending my friends and family go there! I know I will definitely be back!

What can I say? I love Chinese food and since its so difficult to make up mind which dishes to select with so many delicious options, yum cha is a perfect way for me to enjoy it. In Melbourne, we are very lucky to have several locations where to fulfill our yum cha cravings. At Mahjong, we started our journey with a selection of Dim Sums. Dim Sum are little parcels of happiness, Chinese version of tapas that are usually served in bamboo baskets. They have an extensive list of dumplings, starting from ginger prawns, crab meat and prawn, hot and sour pork to vegetarian ones. I found their dumplings to be fresh, tender and steamed to perfection. They were all full of flavors. You just can’t stop at one!

A local fave hard to top. Owner is so lovely, and the food is consistently great, especially the Eye Fillet - do yourself a favour, delicious.
Michfish
Mahjong used to be a great restaurant with good service and delicious food. We have not visited the place in a while but was really disappointing today! The waiter was so rude to us, we waited for ages for the dishes to arrive, and the place wasn't even busy only had about 3 tables of customers. We just asked politely whether our food was on its way and the waiter pretty much didn't apologise but rudely pointed out to us that it wasn't even a long wait and why are we winging. I feel really offended and not happy at all!
Clair
Yum! Best Chinese food I've tasted in the area. Pork dumplings to die for and the duck spring rolls are also excellent. Wish I had ordered more of them as everything was so tasty! 👍🏻

Thanks to the dining experience in Mahjong, 'FORCE' me to create an account on Zomato purposely, just to share my precious moment with someone who are searching for modern dining experience with Chinese cuisine. The first impression of this restaurant changed my previous perspective of Chinese Cuisine. They tried to merge both western culture with Chinese heritage, to deliver a fusion dining experience who never had at other places. The most important is their food was beyond my expectation! As a rice lover I ordered their mahjong fried rice with pork and prawn, it was full of 'wok' aroma and fried perfectly. Pan fried Shanghai Dumpling for the side dish was pretty impressed too, crispy thin skin with juicy filling, six pieces of those are just too less for a Chinese food lover! Would definitely recommend this to those who love to try a different dining experience yet authentic Chinese cuisine!
Two Sheds
Terrific restaurant particularly for the Sunday $35 flat rate yum cha. The food is superb. Our party of four tried numerous dishes (see photos) and we loved them all. To us this is superior modern Chinese fare. We couldn't fault one dish. The wine list is great and the service very attentive, efficient and friendly. It added up to a perfect Sunday. There is not a doubt we'll be back and soon.
Harry Quinert
Ordered home delivery online via Menulog. Received confirmation and estimated time of delivery via text, but an hour after that ETA there was still no food. Called the restaurant to check on the order, and was told fairly flatly that there was no such order, and it was Menulog's fault. Fair enough if there was a problem with the website. But no apology, and no offer to correct the situation whatsoever. Really slack, guys.

Dined at Mahjong yesterday and the food was delicious, the service top notch. The venue has great atmosphere with a comfortable setting.
Highlight - Kung fu Chicken, juicy pork dumplings, chilli prawn won tons.
Worth a visit
WOW the smell when you walk into this place, AMAZING!! One of the best smelling restaurants we have been too! It just lures you in off the street and was a great start to the evening!

The service was fantastic all meals come out as they are ready but we weren’t too bombarded with everything at once, which is always nice! Everything was super fresh straight from the kitchen! We will definitely be back, and to top it off, great value for money!
I was initially reluctant to post the following negative review because I did feel a sense of loyalty to this restaurant as I have been a customer since it first opened. I don't know why but the quality of cuisine has gone downhill in my opinion. I had the fried rice which was tasteless and rather bland. So too was the San choy bau and sweet n corn soup. Sorry to say but I have tasted much better Chinese cuisine elsewhere and at more affordable prices. The restaurant underwent renovations I think a year ago or so, perhaps the decline in quality is paying for that. Unfortunately I won't be going back. What happened to the Mahjong of old ?!
Food For Thought
Lovely ambience and the food reminded me of mixed cantonese and northern chinese flavours. Service was faultless. We had a variety of dumplings, peking duck pancake, salt pepper calamari before having fried rice, pepper beef and steamed fish. For my asian palate, the prawn pork wonton with chilli oil and ginger prawn dumplings were really delicious and the pepper beef melts in your mouth literally. The steamed fish was delicate and cooked perfectly. The only let down was the fried rice which was slightly dry. Overall, definitely a place I would return again.
Bob Harris
I give 1.5 for delivering chicken breast that was not overcooked. Everything else was a big flop.

Overpriced Chinese food, unfriendly service, unattentive service, unhygienic staff(scratching head and touching face) and just bland basic Chinese food.
Nguyễn Mạnh Duy
So we called in Mahjong at random and had Scallop & Prawn Dumpling, Salt & Pepper Calamari and Wagyu Bun Burgers. The buns and dumplings are really good. I am not a fan of salt calamari so it wasn't much for me. The dishes are quite pricy and you easily can spend up to $100 for a dinner for two if you want to have both entree and main plus drinks. Service was quick and good was delivered out fast. Waiters are a bit punching thou.
I would like to score a '0' to this restaurant. I went there with my family on the Mother's Day. I am very disappointed for the restaurant. I know there was a busy lunch but this is not a reason to that. The first drink took 20mins then delivered to the table. Then I waited for 40 mins to get my first dumpling. However, it was not hot enough. Some of the dumplings were flat and very soft. The staff just put dish on the table then left without any introduce, I don't even know what it was? Finally, some dishes on the table were wrong and we hardly to find a staff to ask. Then One of the staffs could not answer when I told him the dish is not my order. In fact, I have been there the second time. The last time was not good at all, but I would like to try again cause I like dumplings, but it is not worth. To me, the service was very bad and no staff looked after us. The food is not special and quality is worse than those from factory. This Chinese restaurant would be the worst one I have even tried before. I won't go back any more and if my friends ask me, I would tell them the truth. And I won't recommend other people try it as well.

Amazing as always!!

Went to dinner with friends last night. Loved it!

Great service and food! Best ginger prawn dumplings Melbourne!

We were enticed in by the cool look of this resturant, unfortunately this was the peak of our dinning experience. Wait staff were cold & unwelcoming (served by 2).

We ordered two main dishes, both around $29 each. These dishes were extremely unenjoyable - both in quality & quantity.

We ordered steamed Chinese Broccoli to accompany our mains, with the first bite it was clear the steamed veggies had been cross contamated with seafood- with a strong fishy taste - we let a waiter know & he with minimal fuss took it off the bill.

Food 0/10
Service 1/10
Value 0/10
Venue 7/10

Terrible. Worst chicken curry and the portion sizes while huge, was lacking in meat in their mains. Terrible terrible. Won't be ordering again.

Been here a few times for lunch and dinner and always has great Yum Cha every time - flavours, freshness and service. Keeps us coming back for more.

Mahjong - what a find!
Had the yum cha on saturday and was blown away. fresh fresh fresh! tasty, few dishes with a bit of kick but not to bad.
be back for sure Liam

Had dinner at Mahjong last night with a friend. Ordered the Mahjong Rose, Cantonese crispy duck, pork belly stir fry and steamed mixed vegs. The dishes were 'light' in flavor, wasn't heavily doused with sauces or salt. I could taste the original flavors of each dish and the duck deserve a special mention. Moist succulent tender meat with just the right amount of crispiness on the skin. Wasn't gamey in terms of smell as well. Pork belly i found was a tad bit over fried, i found the meat to be dry. Would have been better if the meat was cut thicker and shorter. Vegetables was done in a simple manner.....the sweetness of it reflects the freshness of the greens. Would go back to sample the duck and quail.
Pierre
I used to love this restaurant for Yum Cha but it appears to have changed hands. Now it is appalling. Spring rolls are skinny supermarket boxed jobs. Peking duck pancakes are less than a third of their original size. Dumpling portions have diminished from the normal 3 down to 2. The staff don't seem to understand the lingo. Received a dish that was different to my order. Most disappointing experience. Sadly, I have to find an alternative. Don't waste your time.

Sat near the huge marble bar with giant Asian eyes looking down from

the walls. Fun names for cocktails and a small bar menu that was fine

for when you are drinking. Good Friday night crowd, just a nice feel

There’s another dining space for complete meals too.
Glenn
Slick presentation and gorgeously presented food. Went there on a Sunday recently and I'm not a fan of traditional yum cha with the breaded buns etc.. This is nothing like that. Freshly cooked calamari well spiced, fresh vegetables with delicious sauces to match...
Highly recommended
Michael
Didn't enjoy Mahjong at all. The meals were too small and they undercooked the rice in my fried rice. I spent $80 on a two course dinner for two and left hungry.
Niclarobina
Good food is back at Mahjong. The food is better than ever at Mahjong and the room is warm and inviting. We were regulars here until a year ago when the quality of the food fell very low. We are here tonight, the dumpling are bite sized homemade morsels of deliciousness. The mains are tasty, slightly fancy but homestyle. It's great to be back

Posted by FoodieAboutTown on Monday, April 20, 2015 · Leave a Comment Gotta love dumplings and dumplings after a long walk they are even better, though you tend to avoid the nice fried ones when you have had to do 10kms for the pleasure – trade in fried for a cold glass of Riesling! Mahjong has had a little make over and is now going with a more casual approach to stop by and enjoy a variety of great dishes with a cold beer anytime, less white table cloths and more hawker bar. The staff are still the same lovely peeps and can’t wait to make sure you are sufficiently stuffed with wonderful food and something to sip. The menu is extensive, with plenty to choose from across the steamed baskets of dumplings with prawn, crab, duck, chicken and pork, you can enjoy crispy honey chicken, BBQ pork buns or Peking duck. Larger dishes bring all the favourites including Szechuan Chill Beef, Sweet and Sour Chicken Singapore Chilli Prawn and plenty of rice, noodles and vegetables to go on the side. The Pork Sui Mai were text book lovely, little open dumplings with juicy, aromatic pork filling – happy face! The Spring Onion pancake was a naughty carb treat but it was worth every calories! Little firm slices of doughy, spring onion pancake – would be perfect for mopping up some sweet and sour sauce!! Hot and sour prawn and pork dumplings had the perfect level of heat, swimming in that wonderful sauce, my mouth is watering thinking about it! The mini ‘numb’ Wagyu burgers were a tiny little spicy steak sandwich! They were fabulous, nice generous portion, lovely soft white rolls with plentiful Wagyu and a good pinch of Szechuan pepper for that numbing effect. LOVED!! Top spot, my new fave dumpling house BUT one complaint – they have pulled delivery to South Melbourne on Menulog – come back Mahjong I love having my fave dumplings delivered!! Oh well, just have to get my walking shoes on…..

Went to mahjong on Thursday night with 3 girlfriends , we had set menu, $59 per head . Including 10 different items to share, my favourite was the wagu bun and the high country eye fillet steak. The wine list also well pick by the house semellier and on fare price. Service was spot on, I would say mahjong is the one of the best chinese restaurant in Melbourne. Highly recommended!
Elainehamo
Worth it. Highly recommended by some Melbourne friends. we had the $59 'bring it on' banquet, it was perfectly feeded by our waiter . Love the quack quack duck salad and the prawn cocktail. The chili wonton was as good as Chef gallery in sydney. Bathroom was one of the highlights too, couldn't believe we were at a Chinese Restaurant. It was absolutely fancy and clean. Defiantly be back next time in Melbourne.

Shipping king. Without doubt one of the best Chinese restaurants in the south East of Melbourne. High quality super fresh and flavoursome food. Friendly and efficient staff. Highly recommend!

The food was pretty average. Nothing to scream about. I don't think customer service is a concept familiar to the staff. . Much to improve on. Decor was lovely however.
Jneeson
Neeson. Great facelift and the food is as good as ever.

Bring it on. We Had bring it on $59 per head , was fantastic . The mixed platter in our second course were all creative dishes. Love the 6inch duck spring and the pork belly. Wine list was simple but sharp and fair price. Love it. Thanks mahjong. 100% go back.

A group of us went to the bar there last night. Flash looking space, a few hipsters. Lots of locals- Big paintings on the walls and polished concrete floors give it a spacious feeling. Had little sort of Chinese bar food items with drinks. Tried Chinese beer for the first time-not sure if I will try lychee cocktail though...Yum.

New mahjong. Not sure if this is a new place or not, because the staff seem to know people, but anyway it was a good night, delicious meal from the shared table part of the menu and then we chose two regions of China to try dishes from. had the Grandma tofu and the 3 shots chicken, both delicious and plenty. Good wine list and some cocktails for at the start. Rolled out onto Fitrzroy Street very content.

John Sampson. Been going to Mahjong regularly since it opened and have never been disappointed.
The new refurbishment suits it down to a tee with an open comfortable modern look and great atmosphere.
Favourite foods are Ginger Prawn Dumplings (as good as you'll get anywhere), Duck Spring Rolls, Lamb Pockets, Behjing Duck Pancakes etc etc.
Mains are the perfect size with rice or noodles to match - all delicious.
Say hello to Max and Simon when you go.

Gold fish. Love it , melbourne needs this kind of chinese restaurants combining good food and modern fit out .
Geoff Kliger
For those who want a new style of Chinese food experience. Modern new fit out and a modern new menu. Just like some of the hip places in Hong Kong or Shanghai and certainly not "old style" Chinese dining. And about time Melbourne had a place like this.
A full bar, bar food to full dining dishes tho not he usual fare.
Friendly staff who know their customers and the food round out the experience.
Gastrology
We ended our time at Taste of Melbourne with a supper classic, Char Siu Bao from Mahjong. Unfortunately, the buns were slightly dry but thankfully the sweet and salty barbecued pork filling was enjoyable to eat.
Eat And Be Merry Crew
Restrained and refined. That would describe the décor at Mahjong, with its red and grey furnishings and natural lighting flooding through the floor to ceiling windows. Lacking both the cheap tacky decoration of a suburban yum cha barn or the over the top bling of an upmarket Chinese restaurant, you know from when you step in that it's going to be a safe and comfortable dining experience. Sunday lunch is trolley service yum cha, with delicate and petite dumplings served by polite staff. The dumplings are good, thin skinned and generously filled with quality ingredients. Unlike many Melbourne yum cha experiences where it's obvious the dim sum have been prepared with cheaper fillings and then frozen, the sui mai were juicy and meaty, the prawn dumplings obviously made with fresh prawns. While other common yum cha offerings were sampled including ginger prawns and fried prawn rolls, there was a variation on a common dish that I don't remember seeing before - scallop toast. Had a craving for yum cha. We headed over to Mahjong (165 Fitzroy St St Kilda) for an early yum cha session after our trip to St. Kilda farmers market . Usual yumcha place is Sharkfin's Inn (new & old) & Plume. Needed a change of environment. The dim sims

Worst Dining Experience (if you could even call it that). I work on Fitzroy St and have been a long term happy customer I was excited to come back and experience the newly renovated Mahjong. However today was horrendous, over an hour wait between entree and main and the staff couldn't care less despite explaining to them the extreme wait and that other customers who arrived after us and got all 3 courses and left before we had anything else.. will certainly never return and will let everyone else on Fitzroy St know about how appalling the new Mahjong is
It's Just Food
Whatever By Mahjong - cool new name and makeover. We called by Mahjong last week and were surprised by a whole new look and menu and bar area. After a long time on Fitzroy Street (Up the pretty end) it was ready for a reinvention. And wow!!!! Beautiful Asian face images on 3 walls. A huge marble bar and high tables to sit and drink at, with a small bar food menu. Then to the right a new dining space with more beautiful images, casual place settings of retro Chinese crockery and menus on placemats. Food was refreshed too, from last time we were here. Some shared items and some dishes chosen by the region. Just a very cool upgrade overall. Will be back - often.

Underrated. What a pleasant surprise, the food here is delicious, so tasty and reasonable priced, great service, delivers quick, would definitely recommend.

2017 edits.

So after a few years.. I have decided to go back there and have another all you can eat Yumcha.

I was super excited since the last time I was here it was really really good. However I wish I could say the same again.. But wouldn't go that far.

Service for a fair bit better but still forgot a lot of the orders (maybe on purpose since we ordered quite a bit lol).

Peking duck pancakes were super nice. Have to say even better than some restaurant who specialised in Peking duck. The pancake was very soft and it was made to order.

Fried rice was very good. And all wonton in spicy soup was wonderful.

However.. The authentic, simple and must order dishes like shumai or ha gao (prawn dumplings) were not up to par.. It doesn't have enough meat in there and therefore. Doesn't quite hit the spot for us.

For the price we paid..tea were not included as a part of all you can eat (and we were charged $7 for it.. Which was pretty steep). All in all though. Pretty good. But not authentic in anyway.

-----

Amazing all you can eat $39 yumcha!. Now. I'm a local and I was not expecting anything from this place. I walked pass it like 100 times and I judged my partner for saying "my dad like this restaurant".

We took a shot and tried their yumcha.. Expecting nothing at all because we have our absolute fave in city. And I was pleasantly surprised at what I got!

Menus are hugely wide range. Which is probably for the best because most people that go here are not Asians (so.. Chicken feet wouldn't really doing well here alone without something else). Dimsums are including; some classics like shumai, pork dumplings and so on.. Then.. Fried Calamari (super fresh. We ordered like 3 plays of them..) scallops (super nice) , blue crap (my partner gone cray cray) and peking duck (not so good..) . Wow! I had to asked if all these are really all you can eat!! And we haven't even reach main dishes like fried rice, sweet and sour, broccoli in garlic sauce to Angus beef stir fry!

After crazy eating you can then have their super awesome banana fritter and fried ice cream! (I love it...) which also included in $39!

I have to say.. I left really really really impressed. To the point that my partner called all his family and we ended up there again a week after that (with like 15 more people and they were all pleased because eventhough some people doesn't like dumplings there are 20 more things you can order) and I'm going back again with my friends this week!

I do have to point out that I totally understand some customers will not like the place. When we were there the first time and the place were packed. Their service fallen behind quite a lot and I witnessed table next to me complained and had pretty much no food at all (because they made it per order). Service isn't the best in the world. But I never expect that from all you can eat (unless it's Conservatory! Lol). I think they have potentials and if you ever go, get their chilli chicken with buk choy dumplings. They are amazing :)
Daviddew01
Extremly over priced. I've never left a restaurant so hungry, feeling ripped off, and overwhelmingly dissatisfied. I was there with the group of friends and we all ended up ordering the yum cha $39. The food was average at best, and the serving size was extremely way too small, we even had to asked if there was anymore food coming because of so little that came out.

NEVER again i will go back there!
Mark Stewart
Whoa! Hold, Homiez! These guys have got all da potential, but in execution they so not on the ball. Got it delivered the 1.5km from their St Kilda joint to my Windsor crib and it arrived cold and soggy, as if they went via Thomastown. We had a chicken and corn soup, "crispy" (actually soggy!) honey chicken, calamari and some dumplings. If it was 20% less, I'd be all up in that house. But it wasn't.
Simyddawg
Average at best and expensive. Dumplings did not taste fresh, veg with tofu was ok. Friendly service and nice view across park, but won't be back.

Terrible. We went as a group and paid $39 a head for the set menu. The food was so slow coming out. When I ran a tab to purchase wine by the glass they actually took my card and sticky taped it to the bar in front of me. When the food finally came out am hour later, it consisted of one steam dish of six assorted dumplings that were cold enough to stick to the paper they were on. The restaurant was not busy apart from our large table but the waitresses wore handbags in which to hold their order notepads. I wasn't sure if they even worked there. After another long wait, we each received a plate of six assorted deep fried items and a couple of pieces of Chinese broccoli. Needless to say I could have gone to a bar for drinks on a Friday night and skipped the need to pay $39 for a couple of dumplings and a wonton entirely.
Bernardo
Expensive and disappointing. Dumplings are defrosted not fresh.
Bobovallum
Yum cha - Bah. Took the set yum cha menu. Still hungry. This place provides meagre rations of unexceptional food at an exceptional price. Next time I look before I leap.
Foodsta
The shifties tried to pull a fast one on us!!!
After being encouraged to order the $59 "bring it on" menu we were assured that the food would continue until we were full. After 6 mini courses the owner decided we'd had enough and cleared our table. I told another waiter we were still hungry, so they continued to bring out 3 more courses. 9 small courses of Chinese at $118 is ridiculous.
When we went to pay, the first bill was $126 with tea for 2, we handed over the Entertainment card expecting 25% discount only to receive a 2nd bill with a phony $30 Ginger prawns added, that was then deducted to keep the bill at $126. WTF!! When I enquired about this to 2 waiters they disassociated themselves from the owner. The owner then apologized with an obvious shamefull look on his face.
NEVER AGAIN!
Monica
Loved it the food was beautiful my partner and I enjoyed our evening just a bit on the expensive side good customer service. We will return

HORRENDOUS EXPERIENCE. RIP OFF!!!!! DREADFUL SERVICE!!! RUDE STAFF!!! We walked out starving. This casual family yumcha luncheon experience cost us $200.00 plus for 3 adults and two children without alcohol. What a joke! The limited food selection was pleasant but scarce. After dining at Mahjong we went and got a kebab down the street to fill our empty stomachs. Never ever again will we return to this establishment. I wouldn't waste my time or money!!
Hippy_chic73
Poor Customer Service. Called in for takeaway in my lunch break and was rudely informed I needed to order more in order to use EFTPOS. There was no sign to indicate this and I told him so, but was told that there wasn't one and he was telling me now.
My friends meal was questionable, chicken and sweet corn soup was merely a small tub full of flavoured water with floaties in it for $7 and three tiny dumplings for $6.50 - Can safety say we will go elsewhere next time.
Madame Bubbles
Enjoyed a sunny Saturday afternoon in the company of old friends, delighting in some very yummy yum cha accompanied by bubbles (Moët $128 bottle). Wait-staff were attentive and helpful and we left feeling sated and satisfied, with a little bubbles-buzz to boot.

REALLY REALLY BAD SERVICE! STAFF JUST RUDE

Terrible service. Went with friends last weekend for yum cha, worst service I've ever experienced. Food ok, but have had much better elsewhere, cheaper. Waitress was surly and down right rude. Despite not really having eaten sufficient, we left only to find a delightful cafe with cheerful, attentive service just up the road, much more relaxing. I will not eat here again and will not recommend it to anyone.
Amdebettencor
Expensive poor quality food. It looked promising but I've had far better food elsewhere that cost much less. The crystal bay prawn dumplings casing fell apart, either old or overcooked, and my efforts to get it on my plate meant I knocked over my wine glass. Staff hurried to clean it up but there was no offer to refill so I had to buy another which I thought was a bit mean for an expensive restaurant. Overall the food was very average, I definitely wouldn't recommend eating here if you're a yum cha fan.

Worst wonton soup I've ever had. Paid $8.80 for 3 wontons and a mushroom floating in hot water. Don't do it

Very nice. Had a lovely meal here with friends a few weeks ago. We chose a mystery banquet option, where you pay just under $60 per head, tell the waitress if you have any dietary requirements, and then get brought all kinds of yummy food. We had about 5 different sets of dumplings, a number of other entrees and a selection of varied mains. The food was delicious (there was just one dumpling that we didn't like, maybe the football dumpling?), and it was enough to satisfy us. Our only surprise was that the banquet didn't include any dessert or tea and coffee option, so we got to the end of the main meals and were waiting to see if there'd be dessert or something to end the meal. In hindsight, we hadn't asked at the start if there'd be dessert, so that's probably our fault. We thought the food was excellent, and the service was mostly good. I'd eat here again!
Sandy
Dissatisfied in every way. I really enjoy the Asian food but this place has no idea of how to cook or present or provide good service. The restaurant was quite messy it was as though a bunch of kids were left to cook and serve paying clients. We should have returned all 4 dishes and walked out.
Not returning to this restaurant.
TinTin
Not happy. The atomosphere is stylish and relaxed. The ambience cool and calm. The food bland and insipid, I was completely unimpressed with the food. Will not return, unless flavour enters the building!
Phill
Good food, good service. We ate here at Easter. Food was excellent and staff great. Signature dishes were more expensive than other dishes but not excessively so. We would definitely eat here again

Very nice food, though expect to pay top $. Honey Pepper beef was our favourite. Though $9 for 1 San choi bau I thought was excessive.

Some of the worst service I have ever experienced. Table of 20 people and we were given 1 drinks menu and 1 food menu to share and the waiter stood at the table waiting for orders. Had to suggest it would be quicker if we had more menus.
Unhelpful and disinterested waiter who acted like everything he did was a huge favour.
Food took a while, expected for a large table, but once it started to arrive we all received our food quite promptly. Nice good but not with putting up with the staff, wouldn't bother returning.
Mjloco
In the middle... I have to agree with Kyle below.. The service was quite disorganised and slow. We watched each of our 5 courses being sent to the wrong table by different waiters. But we couldn't complain about the food when it did finally arrive. The black bean stir fry and the salt & pepper calamari were my favourites. A tad overpriced for what you get so on that basis I'd have to say I think there are better options nearby if you feel like Asian/yum cha.
Grimm
Excellent Yum Cha!. Beautiful decor and fantastic, fresh yum cha! The service was great and the food was wonderful with plenty of vegetarian/vegan options. I went here with family (who are not all vegetarian) who had been to many other yum cha places, such as The Shark Fin, and apparently Mahjong was the best! The consensus was that the vegetarian curry puffs were the best anyone has ever eaten! Highly recommended!
