Review Freddie Wimpoles - St Kilda

Best bar in town… best bar on earth??? This local watering hole is close to my heart. Staff are some of the most top notch people - so friendly and accommodating while still swiftly managing anyone who might be causing a problem/drama. Honestly staff are just bosses and I love them. Lots of outdoor seating, pool table inside, great beers on tap and just all round VIBES. Also trivia on Tuesdays is good. Oh and you can bring your dog inside!

What a great little establishment, basically a room in the corner of the building but with a huge atmosphere of fun and frivolity. We visited late on a Saturday night after a concert. The security were very welcoming and polite. The patrons were rowdy and vocal but all in good fun as they sang along with the musician playing live. For people out of town, this was and is a great place to visit.

Came here after a bit of a walk. A very good selection of beers and spirits. The bar is well equipped to just mellow out with a couple of pints. Thanks guys.

Such a great vibe at this bar with an outstanding beer selection. Very friendly and inclusive staff. Always have a great time coming here!

The best bar I have been to; the physical ambience is completely at another level.

I’m a local who usually goes to a place a couple of doors down. My partner and I decided to try somewhere new yesterday 1 July. After ordering at the bar we sat down and asked one of waitstaff if they had water. Her sarcastic reply: “Water? Yeah, we have water” Then pointing to the water station: “I’ll get you some now but next time you’ll know where to get it” is not what I call great or friendly service. I was the only woman of colour there. I wonder is this how POC are treated in this establishment? Or perhaps how all new patrons are greeted? I’ll be going back to my regular spot. Some further training for staff on customer service might be worthwhile.

Loved this bar. Great atmosphere, cosy and perfect for a catch up with friends. Had the hot cider and mulled wine, both delicious!! Great selection of beers very interesting flavours! Will definitely be back

Been living in St Kilda for 8 weeks now and this my favorite bar. Always friendly, good choice of beer and relaxed atmosphere.

Wow! I’ve been waiting a long time for a place like this to be in St Kilda but then I don’t get to visit as long as I’d like.

Ten of us came here after a workshop at Tolarno’s to celebrate the end of Day 1. The drinks flowed and the music played. What a great atmosphere. Staff were lovely and helpful. Drinks at reasonable prices.

Next time I look forward to a meal.

Well done owners.

Nice cosy place with good sitting space. I had beer, chips and chicken tenders. Quantity of chips is really good and also the beer serving. Chicken was ok. Music being played is really nice and you will find pool table too.

This place has a good range of beers on the tap. The food is good! Do try their southern fried chicken tenders, they’re yumm! but I am not a big fan of their wings, didn’t like it much.
Also, they have some badass taxidermy up on display!

Food 3.5/5
Service 4/5
Ambience 4/5
Value for money 4/5

Was my new favourite local until I found Misery Guts across the road. The beer selection is beyond compare. You need to visit just for that and the amazing array of beer cans from history that line the walls. Nice way to pass a couple of hours. Beer paddle worthwhile given the huge selection of beers. If you are lucky you might spot a Masterchef 😀

$2 oysters and $8 beers what could possibly go wrong? Pleasant Sunday afternoon at happy hour. Excellent range of craft beers, good atmosphere. The bartenders were friendly and entertainment. They even had mulled cider for a cold winter evening. So much better than what used to be there. I can’t wait to try the food.

Good corner bar with more space than you would think with a large outside area. The fit out is well-thought out, with a winter cabin in the wilderness sort of vibe. Which leaves it somewhat confusing when the food menu is New York deli.

There can be a great vibe in there most times, although would like to see more authenticity with the taps in terms of craft beer. I realise a lot of the clientele are backpackers, but not really true to the style of a craft beer bar if there is Carlton, Monteith's and Coopers on tap next to the likes of Mountain Goat, Brooklyn and Stone.

With that said, still a good place to hang out with mates and talk shop.

#FAKENEWS!!!! It’s NOT everything on tap in happy hour! Not a great beer selection (definitely not what’s on their website - think Stone & Wood) and not v friendly staff 😢 on the positive side, the kangaroo jerky is great with the beer

Always forever changing craft beers on tap which is great!, New menu serving decent food, big big big screen for any sporting or social event.

Seating outside which is great in the sun with a cocktail.

Love the place, will come back, new local!

The menu was uninspiring and the food was very average, definitely would not eat here again. On the positive side the beer was good but this app is all about the food.

My partner and I were craving spicy chicken wings after watching Hot Ones on YouTube lol So we decided to give Freddie Wimpoles a go. The bar itself is funky and cool with a great vibe, the food however wasn't that great. The menu is also different on Zomato so I was disappointed when we got there and they didn't have what I wanted. The wings were ok but not as spicy as I had hoped but the downer for me was the sub I ordered. It was too heavy and soggy, the beef was tough too. It's not what I would normally eat but I struggled to get something that I liked on the menu. My partner said his hot dog was ok but he wasn't overly thrilled with it. Would I come back again... for a drink absolutely but I am afraid definitely not for food.

Freddie's is my dirty hangover secret! Look obviously their food isn't for everyone but when I'm in need, I can't go past their hot dogs, and whenever I'm there for a drink the staff are lovely and attentive. A great local pub that's unpretentious & suitable for a group of tradies post work or classy ladies post dinner.

Pros:
Fantastic beer selection
Very decent food
Excellent live music nights
Nice Cocktails
Lots off majestic dead animals on the wall

Cons:
Place maybe tries a little too hard and still missing a some character but hopefully that will come.

I frequented the George Wine Room for many year but hadn't been in the area for a while. Friends said to meet at Freddie Wimpoles. I got a bit lost until the realisation came over me that the George was no longer. My jaw was dragging on the ground as I walked in. It was like I was in a seedy American road house and the people nearby banging their hands on the table and singing 'we will rock you" really loudy kind of added to that feeling.
The food was pretty tasty, good fried chicken is hard to find and this was really good.
The decor isn't to my liking but people were enjoying themselves and that's good.
Vale George Wine Room.

Best place to come and hang out Day or night! Bar and beer choice are amazing!!! Decor and fit out worth going for online, great job and location! Looking forward to more beers here

I spent a few hours with a friend enjoying a variety of beverages. Loved the vibe and music in this place, rest of the crowd were fairly chill too. Staff were accomodating (charged my phone for me!) and service was quick.
I'm looking forward to going back!
Tried my first pink gin - is a must try.

Edit (1 week after initial visit): I went back for lunch with a group of friends. Must try are the chicken wings with smokey BBQ sauce! delicious!!! 🙌🏻 Also enjoyed one of their cheese platters, which was pretty damn tasty (but cheese is!) with plenty of variety on the board. More crackers though, less bread.
A friend had the deconstructed nachos - she loved it!
Awesome beer selection - 13 rotating taps, so there's always something new to try! You can even vote for your favourite beer on 'The People's Choice Tap'. Great tunes and such a rad, chilled out vibe! Heaps yummy food like chilli dogs, meatball subs and hot wings. The back bar is impressive too, saw some awesome whiskies and rums up there. Free pool on a Thursday! Perfect local.

The locals bar choice. The food is always on point and perfectly complements the huge selection of craft beer available. Staff are knowledgeable and friendly

We came here thinking it was a new place - but it's located where I think the George Wine Bar used to be? It has completely changed! The decor is great - we loved the wall of cans.
We sat at the bar and ordered some drinks, trying a variety of their tap beers and it was hospo night (Thursday) so all the tinnies were discounted.
I had the deconstructed nachos.. But I'm not convinced on the whole deconstructed thing. Deconstructed nachos is pretty much just have dip and corn chips? However, my partner got the chilli dog, which was good and came with pickled veg - awesome. Overall a good experience and the guys that were on that night were super friendly. Would recommend for anyone looking for somewhere to have drinks and a light meal.

Freddie Wimpoles is a craft-beer destination of choice on Melbourne’s south side with 13 rotating taps and a warm hunting-lodge meets neon-light American diner feel. Following a takeover from the iconic George Hotel, the name has been changed in honour of the original owner, Frederick Wimpole.

Cool little bar. Amazingly full drinks menu with plenty of options. These guys have everything and with at least 15 drinks in tap!! Decor is a bit strange, but each to their own, I guess that's the vibe they're going for. Very busy at night, pretty quiet during the afternoon.

Fun place with a great vibe and awesome selection of beers on tap. Staff are super friendly, helpful and make great cocktails. It's just what Fitzroy St needs - somewhere that you can call your local :)

The first thing you’ll notice when walking into Freddie Wimpoles, in St Kilda, is the massive deer-head overlooking the bar. It’s real, and it’s spectacular. Freddie Wimpoles is a fairly recent addition to the St Kilda landscape and no doubt a welcome sight for beer lovers who, outside of the Local Taphouse, have long been short of good craft beer options in that area. FW’s is aiming to fill that gap with 13 rotating taps, plus bottles and cans (for takeaway too), to go alongside their 180 or so spirits.

Good beer selection on tap, fairly laid back vibes and a bit of an older crowd. Jukebox to play all the old good tunes! Haven't had any food here yet, but I will next time I come back.

Good beer selection. Food ok, Ok value. American style. Good vibe. Would go here for a beer and a sub if in the area but really there a better destination pubs.
