Review Paper Fish - St Kilda

Jess M
Loved my time here! Slightly tucked away and shaded, this place can be easily missed. Great for a casual beach atmosphere and people watching. I had the sweet potato chips and granadier and it was fresh and delicious. I was worried the batter would be too thick or doughy but it was thin and crispy! Love their watermelon and mint slushy too! I was offered an option to add alcohol to it but passed 😜 Well priced and would definitely check it out again! Oh! And it’s dog friendly too! What a bonus!

Sufficiently tasty food: fish tacos are bomb, prawn taco not so much. Sweet potato chips are great if you like them well fried, the potato cake was very good, their fried stuff is excellent in terms of seasoning and they do fry them well. One complaint is the order system, the staff have to scream numbers out, and no ever responds at once so they just leave the food there and by the time the customer gets to the door to pick up the person at the pick up counter is long gone. Plus the cashier service is absolutely terrible, to the staff: its nice talking a bit with your customers ,but holding up the line to converse for 10 minutes isnt, its not like you serve your food at a fast speed anyway, please do something about the ordering system no one has to wait for like 20 minutes in a relatively short line 🙄.

I had the 3 taco deal and loved them. They consist of two crispy flash fried prawns and a nice crunchy slaw. The fish we had was also really good, crispy on the outside and nice and tender on the inside. I also tried the blood red orange and Campari slushie very refreshing for a warm autumn evening. I'll go back next time I'm in the area for sure, might even take a trip especially to go there.

One of the best fish and chips in Melbourne in a prime location by the beach. The food portion is generous and the service is fast. Very nice and welcoming staff. Definitely recommended.

Fantastic location. Fish and chips are okay, price is reasonably. We got the burleigh basket and there's too much food for the price of $29

Great find for fresh fish and calamari. You can have it grilled or fried. It’s a cheaper option compared to other seafood restaurants along the water. There’s a nice spot to eat outdoors and the employees are very friendly.

We really enjoyed the fish and chips here. Its not your traditional fish and chips, the chips are crinkle cut and have a unique but nice seasoning on it. The calamari rings could do with more batter and would prefer a normal potato cake over the Japanese potato. But overall, an enjoyable experience and reasonably priced considering the prime location.

Great shaded spot, nicely tucked away but with views to the beach and people passing by. Order at the window and take a seat or take away. Once youre done, or if you've already eaten elsewhere, grab a deliciously frozen Pure Pop like we did and continue walking along the beach. Wheelchair accessible.

This is a place opposite the beach. You can’t get much closer.

The service was impeccable from the waiter. He was friendly, helpful and welcoming.

My partner ordered some gummy w sweet potato fries and I ordered blue grenadier w sweet potato fries.

Oh and we also had a granita which was absolutely delicious. Yummo.

My blue grenadier was soo tasty. It was juicy, boneless and flaky. It was some of the best fish in some time. The sweet potato fries were good, but unfortunately they tasted dry. They were ok but not the best.

My partners gummy was good too, but my dish was the winner... yay hahaha it that it was a competition but hahaha.

The location is awesome and the service excellent. Just a small tweak on the sweet potato fries and perfecto.

The prices were very reasonable given the quality of the food and it’s location. This place is a must visit!

Battered fish was oily and batter was paper thin and crunchy . Overpriced for small portions

Awesome location! Loving the vibe of the restaurant. The calamari rings were bomb. They were tender in the inside and crispy on the outside. Very tender.

I got the gummy and blue grenadier fish. Juicy and well seasoned.

Paperfish may be a hole in the wall down by the beach in St Kilda, but it’s a gem. Forget the truly woeful offerings in nearby Acland Street, or the other overpriced places around- if you want fish & chips or prawn tacos, go here. The fish was fresh, the Japanese potato cakes are awesome and there’s crinkle cut or sweet potato chips. I also had a reasonable glass of Rosè. Next time I will try a granita, which you can also have it with vodka or gin. Totally recommend.

Perfect setting for fish n chips by the beach. Fish is pricey but good quality. Crinkle cut chips smothered in spices not so much. Service a little curt. Limited drinks menu.

Such a cute spot we happened to stumble across. We were just going to enjoy a drink but I noticed a Fish Taco for $6, and thought I’d grab one to try (for the gram ha!). OMG I’m so happy I did, it was so delicious!! Fresh fish cooked to perfection! The slushie drinks were fab too. I can’t wait to go back!

It’s pretty good value for where it is. Of course they save on costs by having no table service. The fish packs at $15 can just about feed 2 with a small addition. Beer is cheap. Tacos are good but there isn’t very much of it. So overall great value but you just have to work out how to order. $40 for 3 fish tacos, a fish / chips / salad pack and 2 beers is good value. Never mind the salad looked really small!

There are lots of nice places to eat along the beach but most are very expensive.

While this is expensive for fish chips, it’s a great cheaper option and the food was absolutely excellent.

Perfect location with sufficient seating, however the food was slightly disappointing. It was likely due to the extremely busy night but after waiting at least 30 min the line, the grilled blue grenadier was watery and flavorless...expected more but will be back to try again.

Amazing food and pricing is so good. Cannot recommend enough. Can get busy though we waited about 40 minutes but it’s definitely worth the wait.

Cheap and great food with an amazing view fish wasnt too oily and the fries were tasty! Would defo come back here again! Get the basket for two its the most worth!

Ordered:
- Box of Chips $5
- Granita (Limonatta) $5
- Granita (Watermelon and Mint) $5

A really cheap, great place to stop for a quick snack and refreshment when on a nice day out at the beach. The granitas are a smart way to handle your thirst during the Summer heat and the chips were very cheap and seasoned well. I definitely recommend this place as a pit stop for food when you’re at St Kilda beach, but would love to come back one day and try their fish tacos for lunch. Definitely one of the more cheaper areas to eat in the sea of overpriced cafes it is surrounded by.

Melbourne was turning on the weather today today, and like most Aussies that meant one thing - getting some sun. As we live nearby we thought it'd be a great idea to wander down to the boardwalk and grab a quick lunch, with that in mind my partner suggested we try Paperfish. Located next to Pontoon this hole in the wall is cutely arranged amongst the sand and rocks with long wooden picnic benches and tree stumps for seating. It was packed given the warm weather and there was a bit of a line but it gave us time to look at the menu. I liked the variety of grilled/battered fish and side options. There were also a few taco options which sounded good with 3 different salads as well as a pretty good tinnie/drinks section.

We decided to get grilled blue grenadier + sweet potato chips. We did have to wait awhile however I have to say that I was impressed with the foods quality and quantity (especially the sweet potato fries which were a huge serve for $5!). Fish and chips were hot and well seasoned - we both thoroughly enjoyed our meal! I'd definitely come back again.

It’s officially spring and the sunny weather has arrived in Melbourne! I took the opportunity to head down to the beach at St Kilda. In my mind, there’s only one meal I want when basking in the sun by the ocean – fish and chips. Luckily for me, Paperfish has set up shop on the beach front to satisfy every beach goer’s cravings. It’s a fish joint with a difference. Serving up fish and chips classics like battered gummy and crinkle cut chips, alongside cucumber salad, fritto misto and limonatta granita, Paperfish definitely has something for everyone.

A little on the pricey side but you get the beach-front atmosphere and bench seating.
Despite a bit of a thick batter, the fish is chunky and juicy.
I preferred the grilled salmon, which you could flake away.
Chips were thick cut and a little on the dry side, and the thing is a small tub of tartate sauce (even tomato sauce) is $1.50.

After our first visit, have been there twice. The quality of all the fishes were really good. We tried Their Prawn tacos too. Perfectly crispy prawns (even after having them an hour later) with flavorful filling but freaking costly yummy eat. Costly then the others around but once in a while its good to spoil yourself with Fish and Chips, and the view to die for.

Friendly service.

Owned by the crew behind the Stokehouse and Pontoon, and situated right next door, the view doesn't get much better then from this beachfront casual fish and chippery. Having been on my To Do list for quite some time, Paper Fish offers all of the usual fish and chip culprits, as well as a few fancy extras (cucumber and mint salad anyone?).

Went out for fish & chips the other night after the heatwave and really enjoyed a simple and fresh meal. We had the gummy shark with salads, some Japanese potato cakes and a Pinot Grigio to watch the sunset across Port Phillip Bay.

A very easy night, a great location and very well priced. A welcome addition to the St Kilda waterfront.

Had a yummy summer dinner at Paper Fish, a great little kiosk on St Kilda beach. We had the gummy and two Greek salads with a lemon and a watermelon granita. Fish was great, juicy and fresh. Salad was very average, no dressing and dry. Granita was delicious, sour and refreshing. All while watching the sunset.
Super place. Just be prepared to possibly not have a seat.

A visit to Paper Fish was on the agenda, especially as, after today’s trading they are closing for the winter months. I thought winter was still a way off so not sure why the early closure! The fish was cooked to perfection and the chips tossed in herbs made them tastier than the norm. The prawn taco was also really lovely. They have some interesting goodies on their menu that will have to wait until a visit post winter!

Yum yum in my tum tum. Walked along beach boardwalk from Elwood. Stunning day. Rapt to get to Paper Fish, part of the Stokehouse after reading about it in Melbourne Weekly.

Got there at the perfect time 12.30 as when we'd finished our meal, the line was triple the length.
We chose the gummy pack:piece of grilled shark, chips & salad (choice of 3) $16.50 & a cornet of calamari $7.50. Also had a lemon granita & bubbly rose. Fabulous fish, chips had a lovely seasoning on them & the cucumber & mint salad was refreshing. Calamari was just ok, might have been nicer with a seasoned batter on it.

I'm looking forward to do the walk in a little cooler weather!

Great atmosphere, but it is what it purports to be and no more. Paper Fish is a beach kiosk selling decent casual food at a reasonable price (for the location). By 7 they had run out of all their fish other than the 'gummy' (flake / shark). $17 gets you a generous piece of shark, cut thick and square. We had ours fried, and it was moist, and not at all greasy. The chips were ordinary and the salad drab. Drinks are limited and very low end.

I'd not want to drive here for dinner out with friends or just the two of us. As a way to end a day at the beach, it would be nearly perfect.

The worst fish and chip I ever had the fritto misto was over cooked the was only blue grenadier the worst fish ever and it smelled of ammonia the chips were burnt frozen pack

Had a relaxing lunch here. Fish-of-the-day (Gummy on my visit) was fresh and flaky as were the fritto misto, with a coating of batter that wasn't overly thick. The kingfish collar was a nice size and seasoned well. If we were to nitpick, the food was somewhat greasy and the chips could be more crunchy, but overall we had a great time! The fantastic location and view helped ;)
One thing - skip the salads. Not worth the price for the measly, bland portion received.

Not quite sure what the previous reviewers experiences were like but I did definitely feel like we had a great experience, large portions, really fresh fish and delicious fries! We went for the boxed meal option so maybe that might be the way to go. Beautiful spot, with both shade and sunshine, just a really pleasant experience at the beach! :)

Paper Fish is a casual fish and chip kiosk that’s opened as one part of the new Stokehouse in St Kilda and is inspired by owner Frank van Haandel’s memories of eating fish and chips on St Kilda beach when growing up.

We got battered gummy and grilled blue grenadier, with chips and tartare sauce. It cost a bit more than I would have liked for the size, but it was nice quality. We especially liked the blue grenadier, and the cajun-ish seasoning on the fries.

Nice little place along the sea front. fresh tasting food & great for grabbing a snack. Not huge portion sizes & a bit over priced for what you get but definitely worth visiting. Give the prawn tacos a bash they were pretty tasty as was the flake (gummy). Great for a stop off after an evening stroll to watch the sun come down

Great location by the beach for an afternoon lunch. We ordered the fish box of grilled flake with Greek salad, fried calamari and extra fried gummy on the side. My friend also got the watermelon and mint drink which was refreshing. The fish was cooked well and the chips were seasoned well but I wish they were a bit more crispier. The calamari was a tad on the greasy side but overall, we were satisfied with our lunch. Everything came to ~$38 for 2 people.
