Review Acland Cakes - St Kilda

Tony Wenz
Authentic European flavours. Baked traditional cheese cake as it should be, but also fancy new flavours as well. We tried the vanilla slice and fruit tarts as well. We were not disappointed. They also have some lunch items as well.

Time stood still at this place as one could tell from the window display and interiors. Ordered a tart for takeaway. Friendly service and big in size. Average taste for crust, custard and fruits. We didn’t like the jelly though.

We had the vanilla slice and it was very tasty. We enjoyed the tea and coffee with the cakes.Service was excellent. 😋

The cakes that I got was beautiful, good coffee too, a bit too crowded and a lot time to wait to get served. Thanks guys

The worst cakes I have ever eaten…not actually sure how these places survive! The chocolate cheesecake tasted off and the chocolate mousse tasted like pure butter. The service was terrible too. Save yourself the money and go buy a bloody cake from woolies!

Everyone likes cake. And this shop has a wide selection of them. Good place for a quick dessert.

Disappointed. I think this business is surviving on tourism merit alone. My wife and I ordered a 'French Vanilla Slice' and a 'Chocolate Mouse'. Neither of them tasted like vanilla nor chocolate yet both of them tasted the same as each other...egg white powder and caster sugar? My wife had one spoonful of the mousse and stopped. I had half of my vanilla slice only because we were paying for it. My wife went to pay and decided to get something more authentic...a baclava. I could only describe the aftertaste of the baclava as backwash from our 7 year olds drink bottle after they have eaten expired peanut butter. These three items costed us nearly $20.

Used to bicycle with late husband down Acland Street. We would get hungry and make straight for those famous jewish cake shops. What a delight 😊 they were... and are. This street is famed for artistic People, colourful scenes and Markets etc. Why not indulge yourself in ambience of the Place and a trayful of those rich Delicious cakes... never been propositioned yet... ha ha... Live it up!!
Sunny Days Melbourne
This is one place where you cannot go window shopping without buying something. Their window display was stunningly attractive and I was surprised there weren't any slobber marks on the windows!<br/><br/>I had the Polish cheesecake which was delicious and it was not as sweet as usual (I say that in a good way). The apple crumble could have been more crumbly but was still very nice. There were chunks of sweet apples throughout. The coffee was excellent. <br/><br/>A really nice place for a quick cake and cuppa before heading to the beach on a sunny day!

Quaint Little cake shop that has been on Acland Street almost forever. Order at counter. Cash only. Efficient service once order taken.<br/>French Gateaux - nice<br/>Fruit Flan - 10/10<br/>Mud cake - fresh 7/10<br/>Vanilla slice (not this time) - Out of this world <br/>Tea - separate pot, milk, cup, tea bag<br/><br/>

There used to be many of these cakes shops 30 years ago. This one is a tried and trued delight to visit. SO many people snapping photos of the continental delicacies in the window. For the sweet tooth, there is something for everyone. Located in busy Acland Street, it's a must visit if nothing more than to see how they did cakes 'in the old days'. The staff are always smiling despite often being crazily busy. Takeaway. Wheelchair friendly. Kid friendly. Pram/stroller accessible. Parking is okay.

We have tried a lot of cakes and tarts, all very fresh and delicious. The prices are reasonable and usually it is very busy, it looks like this is the favourite cake shop in St Kilda.

The window display is stunning, and we chose Acland Cakes vs the others on the street. We ordered a Lemon Meringue Tart, French Vanilla Tart and a Chocolate mousse style dessert.<br/>Our favourite was the French Tart which was delicious... however both others were average. <br/>We were particularly disappointed by the Lemon Meringue, which had stale pastry, and very gritty meringue.<br/>100% looks better than it tastes.... it didn’t deliver for us. Sorry we won’t be back, and wouldn’t recommend.

We went in seeing lot of people inside but were very highly disappointed by the Dark Chocolate slice and the Fruit Cheesecake we ordered. The dark chocolate slice was very dry and did not have a dark chocolate taste at all. The cheesecake didn’t taste like a cheesecake in first place.<br/><br/>To add to everything, no one came to clear the table while we were waiting for over 10 mins and we ended up cleaning the plates and glasses ourselves from the table.

I drove all the way to Acland St just for these cakes as I haven’t been in maybe 10 years and was extremely disappointed. I ordered the French gateau and cherry strudel. The glaze on gateau was rubbery and tough. I could peel it off in one long strip and it resembled actual plastic, I had to discard it to eat the rest of the cake. The cake was stale tasting and layers sloppily put together, not as visually appealing as I remember. I had one bite of the cherry strudel and threw it out. The cherry mix was gluggy and tasteless, a bit like they put too much cornflour in to bulk the mix out a bit. Horrible! I’m really sad that what was once a beautiful and authentic cake shop has been transformed into a lifeless tourist trap. I just don’t think it will last much longer with the way it’s going. Plus cash only? Who carries cash? I had to go to an atm to get money, and the extra effort just wasn’t worth it.

We ordered a variety of desserts. Unfortunately the desserts looked better in the window display than it tasted. It’s a pity but I don’t think we will be back again. The coffee was ok.
Quince And Cheese
Acland Continental Cakes is an interesting experience. This infamous bakery is not known for supplying the highest quality desserts, but it's an institution with a wide range of offerings and an extensive history. I tried a chocolate mousse and a chocolate/strawberry trifle cake upon visiting. The mousse was good and the cake was alright, but I hated the jelly-covered fruit that topped it. (Perhaps this is because I'm far too conscious of where gelatine comes from.) Although there are many better sweet shops around, Acland is still a place to try for nostalgia's sake.

Frequent to this street for coffee and cakes. But never going back to this place. Ordered few pastries n choco eclair on Saturday firstly at time of payment said takes cash nowhere it was written. And eclair was so dry.

We popped in a Tuesday night and Acland street was a-buzz as usual :) The cake display was huge and we were spoilt for choice.<br/><br/>We opted for the Apple Crumble, Pavlova and Nutella Donut. All were tasty, and I particularly appreciated that the apples in the crumble weren't overlooked as they often can be! A bit more crunch on the Pavlova and some "fresher" cream would have made the fluffy Pav that little bit better :)<br/><br/>Overall, a lovely cake display and worth a try. The kugel from Monarchs is still a firm favourite of mine though!

Absolutely love their vanilla slice, it’s the best of what I’ve had from them. I also tried their lacklustre rum ball, tasted a bit stale. I went in only to get a meringue but ended up getting a few things. Sadly the meringue was such a let down, it was sour like it was going bad, it’s such a shame. Mind you I got the plain white meringue and was expecting it to taste as good as it looked. This left a bad taste and a bad impression that makes me think twice about the freshness of their store front sweets. I’m guessing they are not baked everyday and the cabinets cleanliness is a fact that I will think about next time I go that way.

Walked in because of the nice looking cakes from the window. Ordered a black forest cake, tiramisu and a cup of coffee. The black forest was dry and the filling was so sour. It was awful and we struggled to finish it. The tiramisu and the coffee were ok but overall its a disappointing experience.

can't rate zero or minus one.<br/><br/>I have been going here for years.<br/><br/>Got cakes today . dohnut tastes like Chinese food merangs is just awful. black forest cake I spat out and vanilla slice is plain<br/><br/>Dont know whats has happen the cakes use to be mouth watering<br/><br/>the cakes look nice. but unfortunately the looks dont match there taste.<br/><br/>complete waste of $26

Staff not friendly or welcoming, no smiles and no one came to help us, they just stood back talking. Flavour of cakes was terrible, the Vienna coffee ring tasted like vegemite. I had to ask 6 times for a menu/price list and received blank stares. This is a huge disappointment. Absolutely won’t be back!

Acland Continental Cakes is okay - the service was pretty good, and the ambience is nice, much the same as the other cake shops along Acland street. In fact, part of me wants to review Continental Cakes higher, just because I think it deserves a chance to be part of the whole Acland cake shop scene/phenomenon.<br/><br/>However, the cakes simply weren't very good. I had a Lemon Meringue Pie. The lemon filling was great - very bitey, but still sweet. However, the base was a little hard, and dry, and the soft meringue top was grainy - a problem I was later told is caused by an imbalance in the egg white to sugar ratio. Seemed like a bit of an amateur mistake to me, and I sure as heck noticed it while I was eating it. Bleugh!<br/><br/>My partner had the custard vanilla slice - listed simply as vanilla slice. Sadly, on our first bite we discovered that the filling was far too dry, and the pastry likewise. After struggling through most of the filling, my partner gave up on it. <br/>Given the other great dessert and cake options mere metres away, Continental really does need to improve. <br/>But I hope it does!

With all the reviews and this picture, nothing more needs to be said. But since there is a 140 characters limit, the cheesecake tastes century old and toppings are a mystery. #bad#
Elizabeth Lea
The colourful window filled with shelf after shelf of cakes is deceptively nice to look at.  The cakes aren't refrigerated and always taste stale.  Coffee and other drinks are pretty ordinary as well.
Dr S
Delicious lemon meringue and coffee<br/>Toasted cheese sandwich with chicken is ok<br/>Go for dessert not savoury .<br/><br/><br/><br/>Service us quick.<br/>Outdoor and indoor seatung

This used to be the place where I would get amazing French vanilla slices made with fresh cream. Now they are made with mock cream and their revolting. The only reason they would change the recipe is to save money. Would not go back now unless they change the recipe back to the way it was. Must be new owners I think.

Acland cakes was our last stop collecting cakes for afternoon tea with an elderly relative who was too sick to make the journey herself. All the cakes in here looked delicious and it was hard making our selection so we did so based on what we already had in our cooler bag from other cakes shops. We chose a lemon meringue which looked divine. The lemon meringue however wasn't close to being pucker worthy. Don't get me wrong it was tasty enough and sweet and meringue nicely toasted but in saying that it had no bite. Few measure up to my high standards when it comes to citrus tartiness which is perhaps unreasonably based on the home made meringues that Kelisi is so good at making. Unfortunately this one didn't cut the mustard. <br/><br/>Would try something different next time.
Susie Westbury
The cakes do not have flavour. They are visually appealing but that is all that is impressive. Funded by tourists and avoided my locals. In addition, dirty plates, cups and presumably cutlery. Do not visit

Walked passed this place and the cake on the display seemed to called my name. It looked deliciously good! <br/>Bought the cheesecake and the fruit pie, ate it, and I felt like somebody had vigorously woke me up from my daydreaming.<br/>It taste awful. The fruit pie looked like days old, very different from the window display. The custard had an artificial taste, the crust was wet.<br/>The raspberry cheesecake wasn't good either. Gritty and bland. The base also very thin and plain. <br/>Obviously the cake on the window display looks better that what they served us.<br/>Big no no.
Zoe Thomas
Not good enough. I bought a slice of the chocolate moose cake here 3 days ago to take home and eat a few hours later.. it was disgisting dry (very old) the moose tasted like butter (not chocolate) and was not even fit for eating went straight into the bin. When i happened to be walking past today i thought id give them some feedback to which the person on duty - Anna - became very defensive and insisted all their cakes were fresh daily to which i pointed out the rest of the choc moose cake that was there on wednesday was still there on saturday!!! Yuk. And she didnt even offer me a refund or a replacement slice of their gross cakes. Rather she said i should have brought the half eaten slice back to st kilda. Ha. This is not a landmark St Kilda business, the owners must have changed since that reputation established. please do not go there, save your tastebuds and your money and go to a cake shop where the cake is edible. Seriously unimpressed.
Frannymcc231
We ordered some cakes this morning to enjoy when we got home and we found mould on our cake. We were expecting nice and fresh food as we only bought it in the morning. Very upset and disappointed.
Lachlan Stott
Definetely overpriced. Went there without checking reviews and regretted it. Expect the cakes to be overly sweet and the service to be adequate. Accepting only cash is also particularly annoying
Catherine MC
The cheesecake tasted like it was dipped in washing detergent. It was really awful. Pick one of the other cake shops in Acland St. This was very disappointing.
John Hopkins
Just dropped in and had a slice of fruit cheesecake and it actually tasted like cheese, absolutely horrible, couldn't stomach more than two bites. Coffee was okay but cheesecake was the worst I have ever tasted, and I'm usually easily pleased when it comes to cakes, looking through the other comments on here maybe it was off?!
Ching
Ordered a fruit tart and it was absolutely disgusting. There was literally nothing was nice about it. Do not recommend! 1 star for the good location.
Helen
The almond horseshoe is nice and so is the cheesecake but overall not as much variety as some of the other cake shops. The tiramisu and mousse ok but not as nice in plastic cups!
Chang Gyu Yoo
Omg we came from NZ and we decided to go back and try acland continental cakes but turns out cheesecake i got for takeaway was expired!!! It was so sour and smelled like old milk,, do not go back until these guys gets good review, im so disappointed that this kind of business still exist
Meg
We were walking passed Acland street and came across this pastry shop. We ordered the Meringue Lemon Tart, it was alright but I won't have it again. <br/><br/>Honestly I don't know what is the big fuss about the pastry shop in Acland Street, tried two shops and they were okay only.
Andrea
Absolutely loved the lemon merengue tart and the vanilla slice was delicious. Coffee was good. My pick of the cake shops on Acland Street so far.

Sometimes the St Kilda bakeries on Acland Street get a bit of a bad rap, as the product doesn’t quite match the exceptions of the highly visual and tourist-worthy window fronts on display. I tried my hand at vanilla slice at the Acland Continental Cakes as was happy with the result. It was a heavy dose that was best shared and was pretty up there with vanilla slices that I have had around town with a good mix of crisp pastry and creamy custard. I’d probably say the range of items on offer is a bit too wide meaning the less popular items don’t stand up as much in delivery. So far I’ve been happier than the average reviews the place seems to get.
Gee
Had a couple of donuts from this place. They were fine; nothing amazing though. I do agree with the other reviews re the cake shops along here - everything seems to look better than it tastes!
Nick Komo
I wish i read other reviews before trying my cake..... yes everything looks better then tastes!!!!<br/>I had apple crumble. Soggy, doughy, cold and not fresh. I forced myself to finish it, not to be rude but all day my stomach has been playing up and feel sick.<br/><br/>
Edita
The display was very inviting and could't choose from such a beautiful variety. <br/>Unfortunately that's where the beauty of the experience ended. Ended up choosing Chocolate waffle which ended up being stale and tasted like old oil. Coconut slice was disgustingly sweet with a weird aftertaste, maybe food flavour additives? Chocolate cheesecake tasted nothing like chocolate nor cheese, but was very very sticky and felt like moist powder... And finally berry cheesecake tasted just revolting like a solidified vomit!!! <br/>I am very disappointed with the whole experience and definitely not coming back!
Eatwithmyfoodsafari
When on Acland Street, eat cake. As trams trundle along this street in St Kilda, you'll pass a series of cake shops with shelves laden with an alluring bounty of cakes and slices.<br/><br/>We were enticed into the Acland Cake Shop by the French vanilla slice. Unfortunately, the cakes look much better than they taste. Overpriced and underwhelming, there are better places to get your sweet fix.<br/>
Jessica
Quick service, cute and cosy environment, great customer service from the waitresses. The cannoli was perfect, it wasn't stale and the custard wasn't cluggy or grainy. The ragor delight was a dense in cream, very rich.
BrunchQueen
There was so many options to choose from and everything looked delicious! The fruit rum baba are huge! All the portions were very generous so sharing would be ideal.

Has it evolved in the last 30 years?<br/><br/>The Display still the same, chairs & tables inside, not much, just new proprietors now ....<br/><br/>This strip of Melbourne is probably the place I started my European culinary or foodie journey some 30 years ago.<br/><br/>The display is always full with goodies, now with a few more modern stuff like Nutella donuts.<br/>I love my Nutella and Custard donuts but I was looking for more refined European stuff like my favorite Sarche Forte.<br/><br/>I suggest BYO Coffee if you can or just do Take Away.
David Food Leasing
DO: The Nutella Donuts, the caramel slice or the florentino- some of the best we've had. <br/><br/>DON'T: Forget that they also do coffees too. Sit down inside and out your feet up. <br/><br/>TIP: There are 4 cake shops on Acland. Purchase one here and move on. Cake Degaustation is bad said no one ever.
Joanne
Had the lemon meringue tart and French vanilla slice. Lemon curd was alright but we could taste the sugar bits in the meringue. French vanilla custard was good but the crust was a bit too hard so we had to have the custard and crust separately. A variety of baked treats but not sure what's good.

"...WHY THE FANFARE - LOOK AND TASTE FACTORY MADE - NOT FOR MY CUP OF TEA.."<br/><br/>Hate to be a spoiler, but...<br/>We'd had dinner in Elsternwick, and I wanted to take home something a bit yum - my kids not out with me tonight..<br/>Drove to St Kilda - to the cake shops..<br/>Decided on ACLAND CONTINENTAL CAKES, only cos they seemed busier than the rest - after perusing their windows sorta looked to me like they were all offering exactly the same wares, to be honest..<br/>Except for the one at the very end - but hey, cupcakes have had their day.. surely.. well, they certainly have in our house..<br/>Anyway bought 4 of those HUGE meringues, an apple slice, a square of french vanilla slice, a wedge of berry cheesecake and a lemon tart - gave her a crisp 50 - no change..<br/>Got home, popped on the kettle, made a good strong brew.. and cut up those sweeties...<br/>Recommend the strawberry meringue and the vanilla slice.. but only cos they were the best of a very average bunch..<br/>Where is this factory that seems to be manufacturing just about all of Melbourne's cakes...???<br/><br/>Visited in April 2016.
The Swine
The Swine was suckered by the sweet delicious colourful cakes in the window of Acland Cakes. By golly gosh they looked amazing - sampling became mandatory. Unfortunately these didnt taste as good as they looked. Too slickly sweet with a greasy essense which after handing over the hard earned dollars left this pig crew most disappointed. Coffee wasn't bad but the taste of cakes just did not deliver. Fail. Eifel Tower or Cake Box in the burbs really do pants this place.
Angela
Very disappointing. I was enticed by the window displays. Took a while to be served take away even though there was only 1 customer in front of me. I was tempted to leave but then the waitress came over. I wish i had of left. I got take away choc cake, apple slice, cheesecake and choc bun. When i got home a piece of the apple slice pastry fell off so i popped it in my mouth and immediately tasted mould. I couldnt get the taste out for a while. I had a taste of each and there is absolutely no way that they were made fresh or even within the 3 days before. The taste of stale and mould was disgusting. I ended up throwing all 4 cakes straight in the bin. What a waste. Would certainly never go back, so didappointed.
Bananabel
Very very average. The Regar Delight tasted very buttery for a mousse based cake. Cheap ingredients perhaps. Mascarpone ball lacked any zing. Prices might be cheaper than other cake shops on Acland Street but the quality is certainly leaves a lot to be desired. Service was as expected but one of the servers was just sitting at the counter on her phone which I found unprofessional. One of the cake shops closer to Luna Park looked a lot better and was significantly busier.
Byron's Vanilla Slice Blog
In one word: Eggy. My second bakery on Acland Street and in my opinion a nicer slice than Monarch Cakes. A thick, eggy custard with a nice after taste of vanilla. Buttery, flaky pastry that almost resembled a crumbly biscuit rather than a crisp, thin pastry. Topped off with a healthy dusting of icing sugar, all together a tasty vanilla slice which needed two sittings to finish.
Reiijoce
Wished I had read the reviews before stepping in. The small piece of vanilla slice tasted like hard custard. It was overpriced at >$5.Coffee was bland. No wonder this was the least crowded shop on a rainy Sunday.
Shermane Tan
Worst cake shop ever! Their cakes aren't fresh at all and it tastes like damp cupboards. When we told the staff, she insisted that it's freshly baked. We ordered 6 pieces and we couldn't even finish it. Their service and cakes are so disqualified that the shop should just shut down. We left with disappointment and hopefully we won't get stomachache tonight.
Troy Mortleman
Had the pecan slice. Really dry... The pavlova was better but still not good enough to get a better review. Not the best - I'm sure the other cake stores on Acland St are much better.
Mochaccino
I regret going in here today. It was my turn in the queue, I responded to one of the staff asking who's next. She looked at me and said she has to finish serving another customer. Why call next then?!!!! She finish with that customer, looked at me and ignore me and walked off. I waited and then said excuse me. She then took one part of my order and suddenly ignore me and walked off left me standing. Another staff took orders of customers behind me. I have to excused myself to get staff attention. I would of walked out if it wasn't for my parents inlaw needed to seat down for rest tea. I had no problem complaining to staff but I couldn't take them saying they are busy as an excuse because you shouldn't have ignored customer twice after started taking order or even start taking order if you're not willing to serve!!! Not coming back.<br/>
Fosterfamily04
Really awful and poor service. Went with friends and had 3 different items. Chocolate eclair cream had a plastic taste. All 3 of us felt the cream was not right. It was in editable. We let the waitress know who didn't do anything and said she'd mention it to the boss. She then avoided us and never came near us again. The French vanilla slice was tasteless and the pastry hard. And thr chocolate cheesecake had a weird texture and little flavour. I suspect they rely on tourists as you would never return.
Charlie Daniels (Curious Charlie)
Everything is stunning, but did they really make everything you see today & yesterday? How long ago was this stuff made? Surely they didn't make it all fresh? And with 'Le Bon' the creamed things aren't in the fridge.
Foodlovesmymouth
P wanted the Chocolate waffle but I said that didn't sound that fancy so he decided to get the Chocolate Tunnel.
Travel FOODprints
Acland St!!! Where you could find a strip of restaurants, especially cake shops with fantastic shop display window (that will tempt you to go inside and have a splurge)!!! Tempting it may look, but it doesn't really taste that great. (mainly because i tink the cakes are on the shelf for too long and it is not as fresh!)
EqualOppKitchen
Unfortunately, I think in this case, it looks better than it tastes.
Jenna Lee
Disgraceful ! We stopped i.... Disgraceful ! <br/>We stopped in at Acland Cake shop for desert on a Saturday night and were terribly disappointed. The polish baked cheesecake was powdery, dry and had a hint of dishwashing detergent to it, the chocolate mouse slice was simply hardened chocolate Icing with 4 day old sponge cake on the top and bottom. Impossible to eat without instant nausea. <br/>The best part of our experience? The staff refused to refund our money of exchange the deserts for something else saying "it's not our cakes, it's your taste buds" <br/>Will never being going there again.
Kate Hong
Worst cheesecake I've ever had. Their baked strawberry cheesecake was so bad I am compelled to write my first urbanspoon review. It was bland, the base was like hard paste, and the body texture was dry and unusual. What a waste of $5.40!!
Dan
Cheesecake was terrible, sawdusty by taste and texture

Grim, grim and more grim.. Being Melbourne locals & having had more than a few cakes on Acland Street in the past, we felt we could ignore the 'Spoon & choose our own cake shop, thank you. Without a doubt, this has been one of the worst vanilla slices ever, with a cloying mass of synthetic cream slathered between two layers of inedible, stale pastry. My unlucky partner chose the "raygar" slice - an hour later, we are still wondering what the hell he just ate! With so many wonderful desert places in other suburbs around, clearly the only way this place keeps going is because it doesn't need to rely on repeat customers. Save yourself the $4 an hour for parking & head anywhere else but Acland St. Bakery, your tastebuds will thank you for it!
Glomeshgirl
We enjoyed our coffee and fruit flan. We chose this shop because they didn't add on an extra dollar to eat your cake onsite like most of the other cake shops along the strip do.
Iceman
WTF happened here? I can recall when Acland cakes was a St Kilda icon, even a Melbourne icon. It's a real shame what's happened here :(
Brunniegirl71
Will Never be going back. We have been going here for a few years now and it was fantastic; BUT the last 4 or so months not so great. All I can say we are seeking another place for coffee and cakes. I like my sausage rolls but you dont and never re heat in the microwave and afew weekends back I asked for water while my husband had his double strenght chocolate milkshake my water dont even come and it was just plain old water nothing special. Must say it was not like this even my Nana used to take me all those years ago.
Maggie.kalman
Maggie. Terrible service waited 50min for coffee still no coffee on a Thursday hate to see how long you have to wait on weekends will not be going back
Chrflo
Nothing special. Use to be good years ago. Now we have so many cake shops to choose from, and more fresh.
Billy
Avoid this place! The cakes we've ordered were at least 3 days old, no wonder they have hundreds on display...
Megan Lauren Wilkes
Not great, we were fooled by the great display--- old tasting fruit tart and dry dark chocolate cake -- blah!
Cmsavage25
Horrible/ health hazard. Just had a savoury from this place was meant to be hot was 23 degrees if I was lucky staff member could not speak English at all would be the worst cake shop in Australia i think the health department requires a visit here
Angie
Don't b fooled by the display outside. We ordered a dark choc mudcake for takeaway but was given a forest cake which was not fresh at all. Our coffees were sooo hot and tasted burnt we ended up tossing everything in the bin never goin to this cake shop again yukk
Allan Lim
The French vanilla slice and chai latte are amazing!
Jessy
I come here weekly and love their cakes! $5.30 for a cake is pretty reasonable and coffee is usually ok. Ice coffee is awesome though.
Bc25
Disappointment. Everything looked so good that we tried 4 tiny things...for almost $30!! A cookie is $6?! Nothing is priced so you get a shock when you find out the total. Unfortunately the cakes and cookies were below average, a little dry, and definitely not worth the money. Won't make that mistake again!
Cactus Anderson
Horrible staff. Horrible food. Never going here again
Geo
Terrible. Don't be fooled by the presentation, spent $26 on bland cheesecakes, moose, acland special(?) gateau:( Never again! Better off paying $5 for a sara lee cheesecake from the frozen section of the supermarket. Should've checked urban spoon first and we would've known to go to Monarch cakes. Oh and the service was terrible too!
Dougm
Looks great from outside and you expect they will be good for $5.30 but the pastry tastes old and the cream is all bad mock cream. The "choc mousse" was especially bad. Went back in to ask for refund and they were quite rude and no refund. Not impressed...

Fantastic cakes!. Acland Continental Cakes is wall-to-wall yum! I don't understand the negative reviews others have left. The biscuit and cakes we ordered were perfect. The apple slice possibly the highest I have ever seen - no shortage of apple. The florentine biscuit was fresh and had a decent coating of chocolate on the bottom. The coffee was good too. The place had an old-fashioned feel and reminded me of my childhood - nice!
Hawthorn Carroway
Superlatively bland.. The seaside atmosphere does little to improve the rubbery taste of what somehow passes for cheesecakes here. The less-than-elaborate strawberry garnish was clearly picked directly out of a plastic fruit catalogue, layers of vanilla filling crumble away in unsatisfying and unforkable clumps, and the whipped cream tastes only of white and air. Save your taste buds the trouble and simply enjoy one of their finely packaged Bundaberg Lemon Lime & Bitters'.
Eater
Nice cakes not so nice ambience. The service can be summaried into two words; cake nazi :) unfriendly, blunt and somewhat dictatorial.
Kevin Ng
Very poor and rude service. So so cakes.
Reis. R.
Good cake, Bad service. Was spoilt for choice over what to order; there were too many! In the end, I got a French Gateau $5.30 (standard price for all cakes) and a cup of Hot Chocolate $3.80. The French Gateau was delicious and the portion was really huge. The hot chocolate tasted strange though. Service was not at its best; the Asian girl was just standing there ignoring us and she was rude when we asked questions about the menu. Will go to another Acland St's cake shop to see how they fare up.
Pyro
Service was great, food was bad. We went for dessert, we were attracted by their window of cakes, we ordered the palm leaf cherry danish and a couple cappuccinos. We were served by an asian girl, she was very nice, the owner however looked grumpy and unhappy so it kinda killed my vibe about the place. the palm leaf was rock solid and was bad and the cappuccinos were pretty bad as well. I had to add a fair amount of sugar to get it tasting decent, thing that annoyed me was i couldn't even get the sugar out of the bottles.. so overall service was good, food was awful, very disappointed. I'll also add that the decor was quite run down, my friend said he had trouble sitting in the seats
Michael
Ok cakes but hit and miss. Try another one instead.. I've been here a few times now and never been disappointed in the food itself but I've found some of the staff to be either disinterested or just outright rude. The bad attitude is really off-putting and won't be spending any money there again. To quote Edina from Absolutely Fabulous, "You can drop the attitude, you only work in a shop!"
C Wang
Had fruit tart and cheesecake. Didn't really like both. Fruit tart taste pow it's been sitting in the fridge for a few days. Neither taste fresh at all, however they do open later than the monarch next door

Dont bother wasting your money here!. After working my way through acland street cake shops, my next destination was acland street cake shop (not to be confused as being an original). well there seemed to be way too much choice but i managed to make a few choices for us to share. well, the coffee was burned and bitter, the cake i had, the cheesecake was dry and crumbly and lacked flavour, my friend had the custard square which looked better than it tasted, too hard and lumpy, a bit like the school snot blocks!! their eclairs were most definitely made from mock cream and way too sweet. the last was the apple strudel...what an awful cake! the pastry was not flakey and the apples were tasteless. well, on top of all that the man who served us was completely disinterested in us or the fact that we'd left more than half of each of the slices on the plate!!! not what you'd call attentive or hospitable! wont be coming back here...not to be confused by the other cake shops in the street...this is the one with the refrigerated window...who wants to eat a cold cake in the winter!!!

Powder cake. I decided to have a cheese cake slice then I thought why not get a whole cake for the family since they looked so good... So I got one... I almost choked due to the cake being so crumbly, the base was ok not great just ok but the actual cake was so ... Sorry but it was crap no flavor. I know it's not ment to be creamy but flaking off to the back of your throat is a different NO NO and it was really over priced. Advice don't get the cheese cake. Im not saying the place is bad but the cheese cake was awful and it seems others agree with me on urban spoon.

For Your Eyes ONLY. Acland Cakeshop looked like a promising stop for pastries judging from how the cakes are presented from outside the shop so my brother and I decided we should go for it (after all, we're food tripping tourists from the Philippines). We both shared a slice of French Gateaux which is basically like sponge cake with cherries in and on it. It looked good but it ONLY looked good. Why? Because the taste was just like any ordinary cake and the cherries were too sour. It wasn't worth my $5.50. <br/><br/>To add to this, the guy who took our order was pretty rude to me. Having been to Australia twice, I've grown accustomed to how naturally accommodating people are when it comes to people's needs so you could just imagine my shock when this guy responded to everything I said with arrogance and sarcasm. My brother noticed it too and we definitely didn't like it. So if I were you, don't believe anyone who tells you Acland Cakeshop is a nice place to eat pastries. Just don't go there. I'm not sure about the neighboring cakes shops though but don't go to Acland Cakeshop.

Stale and yuk. Looks promising but the pastries were horrible. Microwaved, greasy (oil, not butter), soggy and stale. We had one bite and left

Bad Batch?. An apparently 100 year old Polish recipe for their baked cheesecake - you'd think it's foolproof to give it a go?<br/><br/>Something must've gone down that day, because that slice tasted so eggy, hardly taste the creaminess of the cheese. It was crumbly, and powdery. Did not enjoy it; it was hard to.<br/>Disappointing.

Not happy. Dissapointed from the Chocolate Tunnel and from the Coffee Vienna Ring... You obviously pay for what you get. :( It did not look clean..

My coffee was burnt, my partners coffee was made from a sachet, the food we ordered didn't show up until 20 minutes later, when we asked a waitress where our food was. The wait staff were rude and abrupt. Rude to customers, and to other staff, the atmosphere was uncomfortable, the cafe was cluttered and claustrophobic. Take the extra five steps and go somewhere else.

Acland Cakes. Great old style cake shop, just lovely, well worth a visit.

Disappointment. So I have been taken all the way to St. Kilda on the promise of eating great cake there. It looked quite good judging from the display. The atmosphere is ok, a bit grandmotherly, which is good for a cake place, I guess.<br/>While I was waiting for the cakes, I noticed that it takes quite a while until the staff removes the plates from the tables. Not so good, I dislike sitting in front of dirty dishes.<br/><br/> I got the black forest cake, my partner got chocolate profiteroles in chocolate custard. <br/><br/>The black forest cake wasn't bad, but it also wasn't good. Cherries could have been bigger, no cherry liqueur the cherry part tastes a bit artificial. But on the whole, its all right. But not more. <br/><br/>Now to the castastrophe: The custard filling in the profiteroles was OFF! Can you believe that?!? <br/><br/>Avoid Acland Cakes. Not a good place. What a disappointment.

Looks better than it tastes. I don't know what the fuss is about the bake shops on Acland. All of them have wonderful displays in the shop windows, but the pastries in all of them -- I can't distinguish one from the other, they're so similar -- are overly sweet and underly sophisticated. I'm not anti-lollie. But there are just SO many better places to indulge your sweet tooth. My wife and I tried to like the bakeries on Acland, we really did. But we eventually stopped going to them. Full windows, empty calories...

I can see why this place is popular! Stopped by after a wasted trip to the St Kilda Markets. Great coffee and cakes. Friendly and happy staff too. Final word: definitly a place to stop to ease those tired legs! 5 spoons

Old style cake shop like I haven't visited since I was a kid! Furniture should be in an art deco museum. Wood panelling and vinyl arm chairs. I ordered a tasty apple strudel. My friend a choc vanilla slice. Both yummy. Friendly staff prepared each cake plate happily and served coffee and tea that was more than adequate. Would I come back? Sure thing to tempt anyone on a night out with a sweet tooth. GregFresser
