Review Song Nhi Vietnamese - St Leonards

Ella Russell
Staff were fantastic and accomodating, giving us cheaper and easier options and asking if what sort of options they could make for our meals to be veganised. Food was incredible and very reasonably priced. Not a tonne of options on the menu for vegans but many things can be moved around thanks to the lovely staff. Would highly recommend, will definitely be coming back here!

I Really like the food here. classic Vietnamese dishes, salads are my default goto food. Nice place to catchup with friends and colleagues.

The best pho!!! The special beef was delicious, the tripe was tender and fresh, the sausages and rare beef was just wonderful. Perfect broth. Highly recommend. Parking super easy right outside. Thank you!!!

Great Vietnamese food, probably one of my favourites in Sydney. Everything is so fresh, packed with flavour and comes in generous portions. The chicken in the chicken pho was amazing and soft, perfectly cooked. The vermicelli noodle salad with sugarcane prawn is also amazing!

Highly recommended. Great service and the staff are very conscious of food allergies if you tell them. They were able to make vegan options for you without fuss. Also the food is rather tasty too and have been back already. Keep up the good work team!

It’s the best Vietnamese place in the Crows Nest/ St Leonards area, and I have tried out almost every single one in the area. Probably also one of the oldest and their food quality has definitely improved over time. I didn’t like it that much before, but in recent times it’s the only place I love going to. So this review score doesn’t do them justice in comparison with some of the newer restaurants.

I can’t rave about this restaurant enough! The people are so lovely and the food is truly amazing! Do yourself a favour and get down to Song Nhi in St Leonard’s for the BEST Vietnamese food ever! Also get yourself a lemon, lime and bitters from Tiffany - it is so refreshing. And service by Cynthia and the other wonderful waitstaff is hard to beat.

Sydney, St Leonards Reasonably convenient location on the northside. Prawn rice paper roll, grilled meat vermicelli, rare beef noodle soup and vietnamese pancake are all very nice. Alternatively you can order a combo platter to make your own rice paper roll. Or a slightly more common combination fried noodles is done well too. Personal preference is soft egg noodle. Fried spring rolls are very good

Got the ginger chicken and it was amazing! Taste is clean to the pallet and it makes you keep on eating it. Love that you can feel the ingredients are fresh so it give a hearty meal vibe.

If you want a complete southern experience go here if looking for Northern they have no idea! None!! Nada!!! Found myself lecturing when all I wanted was food and service that I was obviously not going to get! Complete waste of time!

I've been here a couple times. The interior is interesting with white painted wooden tables, lots of greenery and a marble bar. The staff are also very friendly. The food had been always good and feels authentic.

I always visit this place when visiting my wife’s office.

I get the same thing every time, beef pho with fried spring roll to dip it in.

If I want something different I get the pork chop with tomato rice.

There coconut drink is beautiful with all of the above.

Recently went through a renovation and it’s even better now.

This place was recommended to me through my work manager and he has informed me it’s his favourite Vietnamese restaurant in the area and that they’ve recently (ish) renovated.

The interior of the restaurant was simple, creative, vibrant and artistic and the seating area was somewhat spacious, clean and had a lot of natural lighting.

As it was my first time here, I think it’s clear that I should order the classic special “Pho” to test the waters of this place.

The broth tasted clean, it wasn’t too salty (or full of msg), but the depth of flavour wasn’t strong enough to my liking. I tend to lean towards more herbal flavoured pho (where I can taste the star anise, cinnamon etc). They also forgot to add in beef balls, which I just realised now lol! It wasn’t bad but it wasn’t amazing, however, if you prefer a more lighter and cleaner broth, this place won’t disappoint. Standard pricing for the area at $16 a bowl.

I also ordered the Vietnamese iced coffee - it was alright. I couldn’t taste enough condensed milk and the balance of sweetness and bitterness was a bit off for me. Wasn’t really worth the $6-$7 for a narrow tall glass of it.

Would definitely come back to try something else in the near future :-)

They reopened around 3 months ago and we cannot wait to visit this place again! We ordered 2 special combination (for 2) rolls, grilled pork chop and rice, rare beef noodle soup, and lemongrass chicken vermecelli salad between 7 people.

The special combination rolls were like DIY rolls, the portion was generous and small rice paper also meant we could make small portions of different varieties. I really enjoyed this dish and it was a fun experience.

The grilled pork chop however was quite oily and salty and the lemongrass chicken salad was a bit too moist for my liking.

Will stick to the DIY rolls and beef noodle soup in my next visit.

I am a Vietnamese and I love the Hue style beef noodle at Song Nhi. All other dishes are also tasty and good value. The food is authentic enough to bring up "home" flavour but I noticed they also twist a little bit in a clever way to suit international taste. Highly recommended.

The spring rolls vermicelli was but kinda felt disrespected or discriminated by the staffs.

Just now I came with my husband to the restaurant at 6.30 PM. It was raining. There were a lot of empty tables, but because we didn't have booking so the staffs said the table was fully booked. I said politely we would not use the table for long time, because we were very hungry and we would just had quick dinner, but they insisted it was full. So, we decided to take away fried rice and vermicelli.

When we waited for the takeaway dishes to be ready, 3 people came up just right besides where we stood (the takeaway corner and the receptionist was at the same area). We acknowledged they didn't make booking either. The staffs asked them to wait and went to check the table. They got the table. I asked the staff politely why they got the table. The staffs said because when they came, other people was almost done. And he didn't know if we still wanted the table because we decided to do takeaway. So, I asked him politely again if we can wait for a table because it was raining outside, he insisted no.

I said it was an unfair customer treatment and I took my umbrella out. The staffs offered for the refund, but in the end we only got refund for the fried rice because the vermicelli has been cooked. And when we went off, I saw another couple had finished their dinner, which meant another empty table (which may be filled with other people who had booking or not? We weren't sure about that, but one thing for sure, I felt really discriminated).

The most fundamental feedback I want to share is to have a standardise procedure about what is the definition of full table, and how to refuse or accept walk-in customers. For instance, making waiting list or as simple as asking the walk-in customers to wait instead of saying no without further explanation but few minutes later taking other customers who come right when the customers who used the table were finished (And the fact that there were a lot of empty tables, which may be filled quickly by the other customers who made the booking, according to the staffs...)

Arguably the best Vietnamese on the north shore. I've come here multiple times and the food is always consistently good. The service is efficient and friendly. It's a simple place to go for a casual meal. Week days are packed with workers but the weekends are a good time to go

Ordered: Prawns & pork crispy crepe, Special hot & spicy fried rice, Rare beef pho ($40 for two). We are now somewhat regulars here at Song Nhi Vietnamese, and there’re good reasons for that. The cosy and bright little restaurant offer home-cooked style Vietnamese food that’s packed with fresh ingredients and bucketload of flavour. Tonight, we swung by right before closing time and the restaurant was still bustling with families and couples tucking away their dinner.

My absolute favourite Vietnamese place in Sydney. Hands down. I live in the lower North Shore which means it is closer for me than Cabramatta, however I really do believe this restaurant is better! The rare beef pho is beautifully flavoured, a generous serving and my go-to. I also LOVE the pork and shrimp crispy pancake, so fresh, crispy and delicious - a must try! Another favourite is the rice paper rolls DIY dish. A huge variety of fillings and all extremely scrumptious. This restaurant is amazing and my 2-5 visits a week reflect on that!

Great Pho and Mong - a local favourite. BYO and a great local to go if you don't want to cook at home. Reasonably priced -- do get an extra serving of crispy chicken, you won't regret it! Pho has great broth, well done rice noodles and plenty of extras. Casual decor and good service.

My go to place for lunch when I feel like something satisfying.
The raw beef pho is very tasty, perfect during cold weather, the combination vermicelli is a myriad of all deliciousness (and healthy).
The combination pork chop rice came in a generous serving !

Basic decor, soft, friendly and helpful staff. Pho Tai was perfect with great balance between salty broth with tender beef and firm noodles. Seafood rice noodle soup was jam packed with fresh, fish cakes, squid and large prawns. A lot of Vietnamese eating here speaks for itself. Prices seem very reasonable.

Very good quality vietnamese food - I had a special beef pho. It was worth paying the $2-$3 premium over cheaper variants in vietnamese eat-out places.

Recently moved to Crows Nest having lived next to Flemington previously (great Vietnamese dining locale). I must say, Song Nhi satisfies my appetite and is great value for money. I've been several times and each dish is fresh and of great quality. Highly recommended if you're looking for good Vietnamese cuisine. Don't normally post reviews but wanted to support a great business.

Very nice service ! Very kind and gentle waitress who patiently took our order . We had the prawn rice paper roll ... The rice paper wrapper was a bit gluggy ! 😣
For mains we had the egg noodles with beef ... That was just delicious ! 10/10 for that! We also had rice with lemon grass and chilli beef which was good too ! Neat and tidy place ! Cost wasn't much either !

Brilliant value for money. When a restaurant is full of expat Vietnamese you know it must be good. This is not modern fusion like you see in so many Asian restaurants but hearty no nonsense Vietnamese dishes. The Lemongrass chick with rice noodles was tasty as were the stir fired noodles with Tofu. Quickly served from friendly staff with a couple of glasses of wine $42 for two. Absolute bargain. Recommended.

Dissapointed. Having read mostly good reviews here, and a personal recommendation by a friend. I have decided to give this place a try. I am a huge lover of pho and I can't seem to find anything in the city/around the city that is as good as the ones in Pho An or the ones in Canley Heights or Cabramatta.

The owner of the business seemed friendly and polite enough, however, the wait staff are useless - impolite and struggle to understand simple English. We ordered 2 entrees and 2 mains. The mains came 45mins after the entrees were served, after chasing up 2 times. The entrees we ordered were the salt & pepper chicken wings and the crepe, which were both good. The mains were special beef pho and seafood rice. Some of the seafood were still cold after it took them almost an hour to serve, having waited almost an hour for the food to arrive, we didn't want to complain and waited some more for them to replace the dish. Pho was okay, but I've been feeling unwell ever since, I wonder if someone had spat in my pho because I chased up 2 times.

We explained the situation to the owner when we paid the bills. She said that I should have followed up regarding the lateness (which I did) and complained about the cold seafood. She explained that the food arrived late was because we had entrees, which was b u l l s h i t. The table next to ours ordered 2 entrees and 2 mains and their dishes were serve efficiently. I wonder if this was bad luck that we had to wait so long and with the incredibly low quality. Having been in customer service myself, I am ALWAYS polite to the wait staff/shop assistants, so there was no way that my politeness was turning them off. I am one of the least fussy eater in the world and I hardly find food inedible, our seafood rice was being one of those things on the list.

This place is always busy!. Away from the hustle and bustle of Crows Nest this restaurant is always busy and I think I know why. The price is pretty good for the north shore and the authentic Vietnamese food is pretty tasty - see my photos! You may be disappointed like the below review if you venture beyond the traditional meals. Good contender against Phuong.
Vegetarian
We ordered a couple bowl of noodles, a beef noodles and spring rolls vermicelli. Before we ordered we asked the waiter if the spring roll in that vermicelli are vegetarian, and he said 'yes'. So there he went, the beef noodle came and I was made to wait so long for the spring rolls vermicelli. After asking the waiter again and again it finally arrived. It was 3 spring rolls cut in halves. I had a piece and I thought this can't be vegetarian, not too sure I asked my friend to try and he said he had no idea what it was.
We asked the waiter to come and asked him if this is vegetarian spring rolls and he said this is not. Then we said why did you tell us it was vegetarian in the first place?! So not happy we asked for the boss, the lady owner came out, rude and unhappy. She said you ordered no. 17 vermicelli spring roll, it is not vegetarian. It's normal spring roll, well I supposed if only you were Vietnamese then you would know what 'normal' spring roll means. Then we explained that when we ordered we specifically asked the waiter if it was vegetarian as I don't eat meat, which he replied yes. And the menu also offer both meat and vegetarian spring rolls for entree. When i asked vegetarian , it means i need vegetarian spring rolls. And the owner said there were two stories, as the staff said he explained to us it was not vegetarian when we ordered, are you for real?? Now she wanted us to pay $7 for the vegetarian spring roll! And i should tell the staff immediately. i said thats what i was talking with you now. she said i had a small piece and my friend had a piece too. This was nonsense!! She's making excuse. What kind of business model are your business based on? What happened to 'there were 2 stories'? She didn't even want to listen to what happened from our point of view. Overall it was bad experience, below average food, rude service, greedy owner. Good luck to you and your business, maybe if you pay better wages, you'd get better staff, therefore better service to your customers!

Perfect Pho for a Rainy Day. It was raining non-stop and super cold outside so we decided to warm up by feasting on pho. I had the special pho with beef balls and tripe and it was excellent, especially loved the broth. We also ordered the Vietnamese pancake/crepe dish which was a little messy to eat but delicious. It's not far to walk from the St Leonards train station and prices are great. If you live around the area, I'd recommend this for quick lunches or lazy evenings when you can't be bothered to cook dinner.
