Review Xanders Restaurant - Stanley

Christine French
Had a marvellous meal the other evening. Great setting, very friendly and efficient staff. The chef altered my entree size meal to a main when I asked if this could be done. The food was cooked magnificently and the presentation was superb. Its not inexpensive but excellent value for money. Would definitely return if here.

The food was delicious but overpriced in my opinion. We had the prawn cocktail and the top fish finest for entree. We then each had the fish of the day which was also very good. You could tell all the ingredients were fresh. The service was excellent and the staff were very welcoming and friendly. Note that you have to book ahead of time, we called in the same day and the restaurant was nearly fully booked.

Delicious food, some of the best we’ve had on our trip so far. Highlight was the chocolate nut tart for dessert. Price matches the quality of the food. Service was friendly. Kids meal was appropriately sized and delicious. Pencils and a colouring book provided also kept my child happy. Also, they were very accommodating to dietary requirements. Highly recommend this place.

Over $200 for 2 people and we didn't order desert... Ordered the 'crispy duck' for main, at over $40, and it was 4 shavings of duck in a huge amount of batter with sweet and sour sauce. We couldn't taste duck at all. Waited 10-15 minutes to be offered desert (no thanks), in a restaurant that only had another 2 groups. Very disappointed, as our last experience a few years ago was brilliant.

It been 6 months since last feedback . - in that time new owners - November 2016 table service was very good - so was the location - entree - we had seafood kabab - it was excellent. a dozen oysters - natural, tempura, & Kilpatrick - except it wasn't kilpatrick - it had bbq sauce and red diced capsican . - which provided a interesting yet odd taste. The disappointment was the steak - first they had two choices, make that one - they were out of steak on the bone ( 7pm on Saturday night) so I ordered the other rib eye 7 veges. Just prior to serving, waitress advised they were out of potatoes - however they would do fat cut chips cooked in duck fat. sounded good. What turned up was 4 chips that looked like they had come out of a frozen pack and were soggy. the vegetables accompanying were terrible, overcooked carrots and 3 stalks of brocolli - the disappointment was the steak - whilst it was cooked perfectly - the chef had drowned it in salt - and thats all i could taste. I tried cutting the outside off to no avail. this was $46 . - they gave a $10 discount - when clearly 90% of the steak left and none of the vegetables eaten. the fish my wife had was very good. i suppose it was partly my fault for not calling staff over, as soon as possible, However - if the chef tried to fix - my wife would have been waiting for me to receive and finish new meal. I should have taken a photo of the steak - the presentation could have been a lot better. the restaurant should not have charged for this meal . - the bill was still over $200 for 2 people. i just got the impression that its about the money becuase we could hear the head waitress talking about the cost of staff.

Came here as a treat to celebrate our fourth wedding anniversary. Ordered the steak. My wife got vegetables with hers, and one of the veggies was carrot. How would you expect carrots when had with steak? Because hers were really hot. Aggregating this issue is the fact that my wife doesn't cope with spicy foods. But you wouldn't think to ask, are the carrots spicy? Because that would be like asking if the meat is past it's use by - of course not! Anyway so eventually we got a glass of milk and my wife suffered through the rest of the night. Nobody topped up our water. No discount on mains after messing up the carrots and ruining our dinner. Nobody came and asked how things were after we initially flagged the carrot issue. Nobody really cared. The steak was okay, but you can get better food with more "expected" flavours at the pub next door. It was a real shame to blow our anniversary dinner on this place. Don't come here - go to the pub instead.

I really wanted this place to be good... it wasn’t. Which is a shame because we chose to dine here for our anniversary dinner while staying in Stanley. My meal came out (steak and veggies) and the first bite I took set my tongue on fire. The carrots had some sort of insanely spicy chilli on them. I am very sensitive to spicy food and did not expect carrots to be fire hot. The waitress took them and could provide no explanation as to why they were hot and had the attitude of: these things happen. I ate the rest of my meal anxious as to what else on my plate could be unexplainably hot. My tongue was sore the whole time and now I’m home with a headache. Anniversary Meal ruined and they couldn’t care less. Sad. Ps: They didn’t even offer to replace the carrots which was a main part of my meal. All over quite disappointing :(

I have eaten a lot of scallops in my time but this entrée was just meltingly delicious! My husband said the same about the calamari entrée. I had the best salad with grilled vegetables and walnuts & the blue eyed trevally pan grilled. Definitely my favourite meal in Tasmania so far! My husband had the rack of lamb and vegetabkes & said he would drive here to eat again! Just an awesome relaxed atmosphere & views. We loved it. Having the choc nut tart. Thank you!

Thank you, thank you. The food was absolutely delicious and cooked perfectly. The men had the 600gm rib eye steak and they would recommend this meal to everyone. I had the chicken breast which was moist and delicious. The service you can not fault. I would recommend Xanders to everyone. Thanks again.

Enjoyed the most amazing meal last night! We were a large table of 12 and every single person was so impressed with the food, service, setting and staff. The food was incredible, even the kids meals were nothing we’ve ever seen before - a work of art with vegetables, colourful fruit, edible flowers and the usual yummy crunchy chips and fish. There was not one thing you could fault in this place. Food was prompt and delicious, service attentive and really friendly and the setting beautiful and relaxing. You can’t beat the view looking out at the bay watching the sun set with a glass of wine! Thank you so much to everyone at Xanders for such a wonderful night out for our family. I don’t usually write reviews but really had to after last night because our experience was so positive. Thank you!

Never in my wildest dreams did I think that some people could be so damn rude, and to top it off the chef/owner followed us outside and wanted a fight, like who does that when your in that business. I will be passing around your bad service. And you don't even deserve a star I'd get better service at subway

Nestled quietly but confidently on Tasmania’s north western shores, the town of Stanley has got to be one of the most spectacular towns in Australia: together with its towering headland, The Nut, the 360 degree ocean views radiating from the towns main street provide a breathtaking backdrop to its many delightful shops and restaurants, the very best of which must be Xander’s Restaurant. Showcasing a delightful offering of only locally sourced proteins and vegetables, including lamb, beef and seafood, the menu offers an array of carefully crafted compilations that made it difficult to choose. Having finally made our choices we were delighted by the near perfection served to us. My husband ordered the rack of lamb, which due to its tenderness and flavour was awarded by him the compliment of the best lamb he’d ever had. I ordered tempura crusted duck, which was probably the most excellent meal I’ve ever had the pleasure of eating. We loved that we didn’t need to order generic sides to go with our meals, but that our plates were thoughtfully composed by the chef so that every element on the plate contributed to achieving the culinary vision we enjoyed so much. The venue was gorgeous - ocean views, quiet dining and tasteful furnishings. An added bonus was being farewelled by the owner who indulged us in learning the history of the restaurant, his commitment to it and his appreciation for the chef whom he described as ‘an artist’. We couldn’t agree more. Stanley, you have captured our hearts, and it was Xanders that closed the deal.

The best meal we have had in Tasmania. Wonderful local ingredients, cooked perfectly with imaginative presentation. Service was equally as impressive.

The rib-eye...omg just cooked to perfection and the best steak I've probably ever had. The service is first class...not too much or too little; just right, as Goldilocks would say. Friendly, personable staff make this a bright spot for dinner. Make sure to book because even in winter it can get busy.

Absolutely sensational. So glad it's come back stronger than ever. We had a party of 8 and everyone was blown away by the food, and the wait staff were fantastic. The ribeye was outstanding. Everything was outstanding!! Well done Chefs!

Thank you Grant and the team at Xanders. Everything was amazing .. the service, the presentation, the flavours and all cooked to absolute perfection. Again thank you so much for accommodating us so beautifully letting us take our time to enjoy each of our four entrees and main meal separately .. it gave us the opportunity to enjoy more of what is on offer in your tantalising menu .. we will be back

Enjoyed a terrific meal here with perfectly cooked beef and lamb and the accompaniments were lovely too. Fantastic country town restaurant with great local produce

Beautiful food... Chefs special bread was divine... We will be back... (The chef needs to lighten up on his staff as no one likes to be told off in front of customers)

It is very rare i write a review for a restaurant. Xanders Restaurant has the best tasting and most creative food that I have experienced in Tasmania. This little restaurant in Stanley could easily fit into one of the worlds best restaurants with a range to suit all tastes and diets!
