Review Chez Jean-claude Patisserie - Subiaco

Bough a birthday cake from here for my son. It was wonderful. A bit on the peicy side $42 for a small cake. But it was well made and well presented and taster very nice. I would like to come back and try other things and see if we can kick it up to a 5 star spot...

I love their generous rolls my favourite is the chicken and avo flute and the farmer ham....super yum bread and high quality ingredients. Great range of quality breads. I don't live close but anytime I'm in the area pop in as it's hard to find anything like it elsewhere in Perth.

The food here is divine, I don't think I have ever bought something from here that I don't love. Quality, presentation & freshness is evident in everything they do. Worth the trip every time!

One of the best Chai lattes I've ever had. Lovely service. The baked goods are really yummy too.

5 stars! Lovely bakery producing excellent pastries with great service. I was drooling literally every piece of pastry in the shop! The filled donut was excimer and in my opinion is the best I had ever! Other pastries were great too. Try them!

Great experience Went there for a couple baguettes and some lunch rolls today.Very tasty and crusty Very friendly staff Nice coffee Will come back for sure Keep the good work

They may be Swiss bakery however the Australian steak and mushroom pie which cost $7 was absolutely terrible. Very little filling and dry pastry. It was a total disappointment and they should be ashamed to sell it for a eye watering amount of money. A Mrs Mac would be better which is possibly the worst pie ever.

wow line outside the shop at lunch time despite quick service, we went for sweets after lunch and there was still a queue. the millefeuille was awesome! not cheap, but great if your wallet and waistline can afford a treat ^_^

When my husband and I stopped by, a sign outside said only two customers are allowed in at a time (COVID-19). We waited for the customer inside to leave so we can go in together.

There wasn’t a huge selection available so we quickly decided and my husband went to order. The lady at the counter just looked at him and didn’t say anything. Another lady then came up and asked sharply, “Are you done deciding?”

I was taken aback by her aggressive tone and nodded. She scolded, “Can one of you wait outside so someone else can come in?”

I understand if there was a long line waiting or if we were taking a long time to decide but there wasn’t a long line and we were inside for less than two minutes at that point.

We sent feedback through their website (no response) but reading the other reviews here, appalling service seems to be standard here. The rolls are not bad but not good enough for them to treat customers poorly.

Good bread rolls/flutes and sweets. But I’d skip the coffee.

Came to this bakery around lunch time and it was very busy. There have a good selection of bakery goods. I bought their whole meal bread and the almond croissant. The croissant was very tasty and the bread was good too. Service was quick and friendly.

best thing about this patisserie is the consistency, always reliable, quality goods and has so many kinds of goodies for every occasion and desire; breakfast brunch or morning tea, winner or sinner. bon appetit!
Food_Glorious_Food
Love their skinny (Parisienne) baguette rolls here! The bread is delicious, crunchy and fresh, and the variety of fillings is tasty. Haven’t tried a lot of their sweets other than the custard croissants (nothing special) and their Palmiers (crispy and very addictive). There's always a line at lunch time (the place is tiny to be fair), but I do think it's testament that they are, and consistently have been, doing something right at this patisserie.
Nina
Wonderful fresh breads , cakes and sandwiches - we love the walnut bread and the Black Forest Cake is superb! Service can sometimes be a little abrupt but staff are under pressure as the shop is very busy at lunch time.
Suzy
High quantity of breads , a bit pricy. Tried the Most of thier products but Portuguese tart isn,t up to my standard which is only my downside

Though the food is amazing, the service I received( actually lack thereof) was appalling. I was standing at the counter on a Saturday morning and two young girls did not acknowledge my presence. Though waiting to be served and standing right at the counter, one of them looked passed me and served the man next to me. The other girl didn’t bother to look at me so I left, after spending 20min in the store. I told my husband and he managed to get serve straight away. We will not be returning.

Purports to be a bakery but everything is delivered by van and shop is NEVER fully stocked til after 9am. Big sign outside 'Portuguese tarts' but they're never there til 9am.

The whole concept of a bakery is fresh bread and patisseries early in the morning! Some of us actually start work before 9 ...... won't be back.

Opera Cake was superb. The blend of coffee and chocolate was oh so delicious. The pretty decor made the cake perfect for a celebration. Will be back for more in future.

It's lucky their rolls are good or else theres absolutely no way I would return or recommend. The staff there are some of the worst I have ever come across. ZERO personality, ZERO care, ZERO friendliness and ZERO work ethic. I entered the shop to see 3 ladies working and no other customers. All three ladies took notice of me in the shop, yet none of the three did anything to help before i had to ask for some service, to which I received rude remarks and dirty facial expressions. Fortunately for them it is only a small bakery and service is not essential, yet it wouldn't kill to show some respect to customers.
Jerry Chuen
Cake was okay but there was a piece of plastic or baking paper in the cake. I think the Staffs should be more careful when preparing the food.
Ilovebeansprouts
A small place, but filled with a large variety of lovely pastries and cakes. My favourite place to go to for a special treat. I always end up getting tempted buying more than I plan to because they all look so inviting! Will definitely be back for more.

I normally go to the West Leederville bakery but this little outlet is cute and has great outdoor seating. I tried the sausage roll for the first time and it was possibly the best one I have had. Love Jean-Claude.

Have been joyfully eating from here for years. It is the only place in Perth I willingly queue for food: it is that great! Every single thing is superb. Real butter is used here, generously and well, and the French influence in textures and flavours is welcome and authentic.
It has been consistently brilliant for decades. I have loved it so much for so long, I ordered cakes for my wedding from here.

We live in Subiaco and bought our daughter a croissant from here.

When she bit into it, to her horror, she discovered the croissant was full of MAGGOTS !

The food is now baked off premises and obviously not fresh or hygienically stored.

Won't be returning.

I came to this place last Friday with a friend. I wanted to give him something sweet, so instantly thought of this patisserie shop because I always wanted to try it but never had the time to come here. But now I had an excuse.

A nice and small place filled with fresh breads and pastries. Your literally spoiled with choice. I got a assortment box of different pastries. As seen in the photo, I got a blueberry danish pastry, almond and caramel croissants, choc brownie, strawberry tarts and custard donuts.

Out of all the pastries the standout for me was the brownie. Warm it in the oven for 20 seconds and it literally melts in your mouth while eating it. The macadamia nut inside it gives us that much needed depth in terms of flavour to elevate it to the next level. The croissants weren't bad, I wanted to taste the caramel croissant but unfortunately my mum ate it and she was raving how delicious it was so it must have been good. My friend who I brought here personally loved the mini caramel croissant I bought for him and the custard donut. Some of my family friends absolutely loved this box of pastries and were raving how delicious each one tasted.

So I guess its a no brainer that this place offers the most delicious and freshest pastries out there. I really loved it. The staff are lovely as well, led by 2 wonderful Irish ladies who are very helpful and suggestive in what you need as well. Excellent customer service. I'll be back again and buy a cake next time. I'm looking forward to it then.

Really well presented, tasty, delicious pastry. The egg mayo roll is super fresh with a crisp texture and pillowy soft in the middle. The chocolate and almond croissants had a beautiful crackling crunchy texture which were a delight to enjoy without being richly sweet. Definitely coming back for more!!
Oiaimee
Perfect croissants - so perfect in fact, you'll go in thinking you're not going to buy one. But then, you'll see their sign for all 'new salted caramel croissants' and unless you have stronger will power than myself, you'll probably walk out with one...and a mini donut...and some other pretty and glossy things that you didn't intend on purchasing when all you came for was a signature filled French-Swiss baguette. The queue helps to condition your mind to this extra purchasing. Every time I've been here, mid week, early Saturday, always a queue, and whilst you're waiting you can't help but wonder what each thing you're seeing will taste like. Just know, it'll be worth. The new salted caramel croissant was as good as I hoped it would be.

Tasty coffee too!

The line is long, the bread is fresh, the flavour is fantastic.. the menu is extensive!! For quality, traditional French-Swiss baking.. this is the place to go. Bought bagels and brioche today.
LittleGirlBigFood
I do love a good patisserie! The baguettes here are to die for truely! I'm a huge fan. This is the closest you will get to Switzerland in Perth.
Christina
So happy my local bakery is now open on Saturdays for that weekend almond croissant fix. A few places claim to have 'the best in Perth' but I believe these guys might. I also like that they do small sizes of the almond croissant and pain au chocolat in case I don't feel like being a pig. Their cakes look incredible, and they have all of the usual bakery stuff, but as you can tell go there for the croissants :)

When I used to work in west leederville, I was 20 meters away from Jean-Claude there. Now that I'm in Subiaco, it's a bit of a longer trek to the Subi branch, but it's always crowded. Brownies are excellent here, so are the sticky doughnuts. I love their chicken and avocado Parisienne sandwiches and you must try their strawberry tart, or any tart really. The pastry is just amazing :)

Food is great. After 5 years working here, my young daughter resigned to move forward in her career. I am shocked to hear about the verbal abuse and harassment she has suffered during her time here. For this reason, my rating reflects the archaic management and torment given to staff. Dont support stores that still treat staff unfairly. Verbal abuse stopped in the 80's. Last time I looked, you can be fined for harassment.

This place always has a massive line and for good reason. Fresh rolls and food every day, super bubbly staff well used to serving a million people each lunch time. I usually go for the skinny baguette that come in a variety of fillings, you really could be in a little French bakery getting these. They have a loyalty card too!

*** I wrote below review before reading others reviews about CJCP and not surprised about few negative comments re. customer service! I guess I didn't get it wrong.***

Always come back for their beautiful pastries coz they are really yummy (and smell amazing!). The only thing I don't like is the quality of service. Not sure why the staffs were never friendly.
Jackson
Bread was enjoyable, though the thing that makes this review a negative one is the customer service and the unprofessionalism displayed by the employees. A few of the girls treated meas if I weren't even there, somehow managing to look past me as I waited to be served. One of the girls was just browsing on her smartphone! To make matters worse the blonde girl serving me dropped the bread on the floor and STILL gave it to me as if I didn't see that it had been on the floor just moments ago. This girl was especially rude, as when I mentioned this, she glared me down before grudgingly grabbing another loaf. Would give a zero if I could.

Doesn't matter how nice the bread tasted, good customer service is what will bring people back. Won't be seeing me again!
Bellygood
Love this place! Can't help popping in to grab a few pastries every time I'm in the area. I have a fondness for sweets so that's all I've ever had at Chez Jean-Claude's - tarts, cakes and slices are definitely recommended but their rolls look just as tempting too!
Dough Nut
Some stunning bread and pastries. Always very high quality In the 15 years or so I've been frequenting this gem.
Love the new shop next to the bakery and finally the staff seem to have lifted their attitude. It was hit and miss for years. Well done - please keep smiling and remember we are the customers!

Best bakery in Perth. This place is amazeballs!!!! I work 3 doors up and have gained 5 kilos over the last 12 months because everything is sooo good. I dont know why people have written a bad word about this place... everything they sell must be tried at least once!!
Azurenemo
Need to improve customer service. I went to the shop few times and every time staff were cold and unfriendly. Because of this reason, I do not feel to go there no matter they sell good food or not.
Cristinaurn
Everything is to die for especially the long baguettes. Love the bustle of the small and open bakery and always get a good eyeful of the deliciousness!
Emma
Never got around to actually trying it!. Had been looking forward to ordering a cake from here for my mothers birthday but the complete unprofessionalism of the staff member on the phone totally did my head in ! had me holding on the phone while she simply yelled out questions to other staff. Finally told her to forget it after telling me I could use my debit card to pay and incur no extra fee then told me oh no that doesn't work after all you will have to use your credit card and incur a 1.5% additional fee and 'well thats too bad really you do want the cake for tomorrow after all'. Pity. I am sure your cakes are lovely but I will find somewhere with more professional service.
Jjo
Excellence in all things patisserie. Superb flutes, chocolate eclairs, baguettes, pretzels and the list goes on and on. Dangerous to go there for lunch, because it is inevitable that you will buy something creamy or deliciously sweet (but not too sweet) on top of your lunch and get a baguette for tonights dinner on the way out. Fast and efficient service too.

I like the different tapas bread they have, & danishes & slices. beautiful, soft & moist.

Outstanding Service. Great place, can't fault it. Will be back for sure.
Easly one of the best in Perth

Love it!. Tried the Pear Flan today and it was delicious! I love the taste of the shortcrust base and the almond cream and custard filling. Also bought the Brekky Bread and I could not resist eating a slice straightaway, so yum! My favourite patisserie in Perth.
Miana
Always a line down the street!. Drive past at lunch time and there's always a line down the street.
Beautiful sweet treats and great choice of breads!
Yummo :)
Simple
Superb. Lovely patisserie, warm staff, great croissants, the best brioche and bagels I've found in WA by far. Wish they were open on Saturdays. They're open Mondays to Fridays, 6am to 6pm, for takeaways. The sister store in Leederville has tables, and closes at 3.30 or 3.45pm Mondays to Fridays.
Chris
Absolutely the best bakery in Perth... Finally a bakery with bread similar to German bakery's ... 110% Sourdough Bread , Pretzel and Pastry... I love it...
Rosso
Consistent, tasty and always fresh... Great lunch if you can bear the queue at that time.... Lining up along a good stretch of Rokeby Road!
Brenda
Divided. Look - I have to admit. The food is good here. And of course, you don't mind paying a little more for something that taste good. However, I used my eftpos, and bought way over $10.00 worth of food and YET they still whopped me a further 50 cents for processing the eftpos payment without informing me first. So the debate is: Service vs Food? For me Service - probably won't see me back there again. However Ogilivie's down the road has great food with great service and DON"T charge on eftpos purchases!

Chicken avocardo flutes are THE best. Flavoursome fillings, crunchy crusty outside, soft delicate bread inside.... How do they do it? Always busy so a great sign.
ANGRY COFFEE MAN
Flutes only- everything else is average.. These guys easily create the best flutes I've had. I recommend the Chicken+avo or the salmon ones.
Trish Grier
Best sandwiches in Perth. The filled flutes here have been copied by so many, and yet no-one can ever seem to get it quite right. These are so delicious, simple, fresh and just the right ratio of crusty bread and fillings. Can't go past them every time i'm in Subi. Try the smoked salmon and the ham and cheese!
Commissariat Aesthete
Incroyable. Moist, rich, fresh almond croissants. The best in Perth by a mile, I can't eat them anywhere else!
Evezz
Never ever buy anything from here again. The service was aweful! The old lady who served me was rude. For me service is the most important in business esp for the famous bakery store in perth like jean claude.
Jayme T
Good quality. Great food - fresh and tasty!

Daily Stop. Favourite coffee in Perth. Stop on my way to work in the city every day.
Agapejon
Delicious Pastries. Been eating here for years. They consistently serve fresh, crusty bread and delicious desserts. I've even met the man himself, Jean Claude, once when I had to pick up some leftover bread for charity. Very generous man indeed.
Jaclyn Tan
Amazing bread and pastries. Whilst their macarons aren't the best, their tarts and cakes are simply DIVINE. I had their blueberry and almond tart and that was just amazing. Their chocolate tarts and lemon tarts are also worth trying.

Then there's their bread and baguettes - so delicious!! If you're lucky enough to try a dessert platter from there they do mini desserts of their usual cakes which are quite nice (eg. mini macarons with lemon meringue on top, chocolate brownie shortbread etc). The baguettes are lovely and the bread is what makes it taste SO GOOD.

NUMBER1 PATISSERIE IN PERTH 2011. This by far is the best bakery in perth as they make there products fresh everyday with 24hour round the clock patisserie chefs and bakers working hard to make everything perfect everday.

Also all the left over and not thrown out but given to varies charities everyday! I think this is so lovely!

Service attitude dominates. Good food, great coffee and all reasonably priced. Service was rude and dismissive.A shame on our first visit.
Jordan Basso
The best chicken and avocado roll I have ever had
Naila
Yum yum. We ordered 2 dozen French flute baguettes for a work function and they were a success. Especially love the Camembert filled one. Mmmmm. Beautifully fragrant bread and fresh fillings.

Vote for Coppa!. Awesome sandwiches and rolls. Coppa and duck highly recommended. But it's so hard to choose from their super menu. Excellent value for such quality.
Spanna The Breakfast Snob
Fabulous French Patisserie. There's a reson why at morning tea time and lunch time there is a queue out the door. The food here is fresh and excellent.
I can highly recommend the lebanese vegan baguettes and the date scones. Good place to grab lunch or a naughty snack on the run.
Pris
Delectable treats. I love everything here. They can do no wrong. The tarts, cakes, slices, breads, sandwiches are divine.

Just try to come with cash - as they charge extra for eftpos. Visit a little before or after lunch hour as it gets crowded in this little shop.

Appreciate the bakers who wake up at wee hours in the morning just to prepare fresh pastries for you and me.

(FYI the only thing I think could improve are their pies... )
Spoonmaster
This is a real quality patisserie, you don't mind paying over the odds when you know how good it is.
Kazzablanca13
Love the mini versions of the pastries! Makes for a great excuse to try and share more ...
DiningPerth
Well worth the queue. It is well worth the queue for the coffee éclairs and lunchtime baguettes.
Eatlikeme
Patisserie heaven!. Uhmmm.. everything is delicious here! can never have too much cake in our lives.

Thinking of Jean Claude Patisserie brings a smile to my face. It is hard to remember a better patisserie in Perth before it opened, and all patisseries since hope to match the popularity (and quality) that has been present at Jean Claude for decades. I started marveling at what Jean Claude produces almost twenty years ago and realised back then that I was far from alone. Those were the days it was open for all, and then some, of the weekend. The only longer line outside a bakery door was in Rottnest and maybe Dunsborough. Most back then would remember the disappointment of missing out on the last [you name it!] Sure, I feel a little aged writing this, but it is incredible the baguettes now are exactly the same as they were back then! It leaves you in awe thinking about how maybe in another 50 years I’ll be still coming here for the same smoked salmon, cream cheese and capers baguette that I did 68 years prior!
Hungryagainperth
I only recently discovered where this store was located, having always only been to the West Leederville store. The Subiaco store provides more convenience as it stays open til 6.30pm but having a much smaller store space in comparison. Consequently, it is piled chock a block full of its selection of pastries, breads, cakes, tarts, sandwiches, sweets, savouries, people, and more people! SO MANY PEOPLE!
Lee
I ordered my birthday cake online and picked it up at 7am before work. Chez Jean Claude is a Swiss patisserie in Subiaco and was certainly a bustling little shop at that time of the morning. Alot of baking was going on right in front of me and even at 7 am i was lining up in a queue!
Sprinklingofspice
So I got a raspberry cheesecake from Chez Jean Claude in Subiaco - the consistency was more of a mousse. Rather light not too rich, but the berry flavours and pieces of beries was throughout the cake. The cake was enclosed in marble dark chocolate slates. Yummy light cheesecake...
Mei
Patisserie addicts, this is heaven on earth. Their crispy narrow baguettes filled with simple but quality fillings just walk out the door. Their donuts, which lack donut holes, are simply cut in half and filled with custard with tiny chocolate chips sprin
