Review Gold Leaf - Sunshine

Mrs E
Our family comes here at least once every 2 weeks or even more frequent. Good pricing for great quality of food. Service is quick, beautiful decor and amazing dim sum. Always full, so it’s worth making a booking for weekend lunch as we have been caught out a few times where it’s a long wait.

This restaurant is one of the best places I have been to based on service. All the staff are polite, know when to come and take your order without being pushy and clear the tables promptly. The food is great, I really couldn't fault it.

A friend suggested I try this place as she HIGHLY recommended it. It didn't disappoint. This is a really nice, authentic Chinese restaurant, complete with live seafood in fish tanks to choose from. I'd certainly rate it up there with some of the higher end Chinese restaurants I've eaten at over the years. There is a LOT of room, so you're always going to be guaranteed a table. Food and service was EXCELLENT. We had a young man pretty much standing near our table and waiting on our every need. As soon as our glasses were empty he promptly asked if we'd like another. The food, BRILLIANT! For entrees we ordered "Seafood San Choi Bao" (hot, minced seafood in a fresh, crispy lettuce leaf). It came out promptly and was nice and hot. It was one of the best I've tasted. For mains we ordered "stuffed scallops with minced prawn in egg white sauce", "sweet and sour pork" and their traditional seafood fried rice. I always say you can judge a Chinese restaurant by their fried rice. Everything came out nice and hot and PLENTY of it. We really couldn't fault the food, it was stunningly fresh and tasty. Congratulations to the Chef. All the staff were exceptionally nice and respectful, always asking was everything was alright with our meals, service etc. When we paid, the lady at the cashier gave us a HUGE "thank you for coming, please come back again". All up it cost $132 and that was for two of us with a few rounds of alcohol included. Great value! We've definitely found OUR Chinese restaurant, we'll be back :-)

Always a reliable choice for yum Cha or dinner - quality is great and you get what you pay for. It gets busy, proof it’s good. Be patient, have a chat, the food will come and when it does it’s worth it. Noodle crab yum, Peking duck yum, mango pudding, yum Cha selection all great

The food was okay, favourite item here was the tau foo fah which was soft and silky without being overpowered by ginger - a hard find. Service and interior is great and well kept.

Was quite packed for Thursday lunch (means food definitely will come out fresh 😉). My place to go for dimsum in the West.
Arianne Nikko
Food was good. Not bad, but not the best either. Also, kinda expensive. We ate like 11 dishes and our bill was $140. Customer service was okay. Cleanliness of the restaurant can be better.

Yum Cha Variety option was good, service was prompt, food was tasty... Very happy overall

Really not good

We were calling the trolley carts over to us but they would look and go in a different direction and whenever we asked for a specific dish they would forget would have to ask about 2-3 times the managers here are hopeless can’t even organise their team we been sitting here for an hour we only had 2 dishes... in my opinion and advice this place needs new workers with better hospitality skills

We have been to the Gold Leaf at Docklands, thinking that this branch will serve the same kinda dim sum but we are disappointed with the food here. The dim sum is not fresh, the xiu long bao taste so yucky, the meat is so cold and not juicy. The tau fu fa tasted weird too, the syrup is weird to us. Overall experience is disappointing.

HOW NOSTALGIC!
I remember going here every few weekends with relatives like 10 years ago and my cousins and I going all out not knowing how it worked 😂😂 but we were young.
I recently went back and with the same cousin that I used to go with as well.

Food: We are a lot of dumplings, chicken feet and mango pudding! The food is what I remember back in the days and it hasn’t changed. So worth going and it was just like being young again selecting the stuff we wanted

Service: As the place is always busy the staff always try their best to go around to ensure everyone is getting what they want. Staff are really nice and love how the ones that know what I want always come back and try to offer again but I haven’t finished the first plate. Calm down team!

Ah everything just reminded me of my youth here and it was just nice to see things the same
Everything was just yum!! The Peking duck, beef hot pot, sweet and sour fish, and the duck stirfried with noodles were all delicious and a fair price. Staff are also very friendly and service is great with lots of complimentary additions including soup, prawn crackers and fruit and a red bean soup at the end. Portions are big. Really worth the value.

Reasonably priced dim sum in the west. This outlet is definitely much better than the one over in Docklands. Service is great, and plenty of variety.

Classic Chinese family restaurant. Go here for every celebration. Good authentic food. Got the classic fish tanks on display, which is an essential like how you need styrofoam containers for a HSP.

Best yumcha in the area.
Easy to get a table.
Service is difficult as too many tables.
Easy to find the restaurant as it’s on the main road.
You can get really big tables for big families or group of friends.

Your typical yum cha place to be. Service is as expected- loud, informal and fast. The food on the trolley itself is always great, but not when it comes to the lobster and noodles. The lobster is never fresh, and way too overpriced. I wanted to get a serve of Chinese broccoli and asked several waiters and the extent of a response I received was ‘okay’. The whole duration of me eating passed and just as I was about to leave to pay, a trolley came by with the dish on it. Surprising, since I was there for 1.5-2 hours and it had not passed once. Good place to go in you’re in the area and craving yum cha, but wouldn’t make it my go to place.

One of the best yumcha places in Melbourne.. this place is located in the west of Melbourne.. it is a huge restaurant but the crowds are equally as large.. the quality of the food here is pretty good and you can get a wide range of yumcha dishes.. although there are some that you will need to order separately if you are wanting them as not all the carts have all the food that you might want, an example of this are the xiumai and the custard bun.. even after you order there is still a bit of a wait.. most of the carts keep coming around with an abundant of food so you will definitely not be hungry.. Parking is scarce so it would be recommended to park a little further away and walk there instead.. A great Melbourne yumcha experience in my opinion.. remember to book early to avoid disappointment..

We loved 😍
This place is one of our favourites ! Surprisingly there aren’t many yum cha places in the suburbs ! The mango pudding is always a crowd favourite.

We disliked 😖
This place gets really crowded. Over the years, they have added in more and more tables making it extremely crowded inside. If you are unlucky and get a table too far back, you might not get as many carts down your way.
Maria.johns
Disappointing... we hadn’t been for 7 years and returned with friends. Authentic Chinese food and orientated so not very welcoming, and was stunned by the price with little food in return. Never again it’s morphed into Cha ching
Jessica T Nguyen
Quiet expensive but nothing surprising for a chinese restaurant presented to beautifully! I dont come here for dinners as much anymore because its pretty pricey. Yum cha here on the other hand is reasonable and really enjoyable!
ThE MOiStMaKeR
Overpriced if anything. Yum cha is good here but I wouldn't come otherwise. Dinner was pretty depressing, no one was around and no decent choices on the menu.
Jay The Foodie
My go to yum cha restaurant in the west. Food is really good but service is not so good...the waiters always bring past the same trillions which is really annoying. Prices have gone up too which is a bummer. Prawn in rice noodles is a must try 🤤🤤
Marina Ung
We came here for a table of 10 on Mother’s Day and my birthday. The most amazing dishes in yum cha is found here! Especially the chicken feet, the cheesy oysters, the dumplings are so juicy, fresh, full of flavour and always hot and ready to serve. The crunchy prawn bean curd with the white cream sauce, yummmmmm!! Could not fault anything! Will be back :)

Who doesn't love yum cha? Gold Leaf has delivered a consistently good yum cha experience over the years. Their range of roast pork, char siu and roast duck also make a good option for take away. When we went today, our focus was the yum cha. We had the usual mix of har gaw, sui mai, bbq pork bun, chicken feet braised with black bean, flat rice noodles with prawn and finished off with a bowl of tofu drizzled with syrup :) Yum cha is a bit pricier these days with each tray starting at around $6.50 but Gold Leaf is worth a visit!
Virgil
Service was great. It was so efficient and food came out so quickly. Dinner was good but if you do want Yum Cha it's only available during lunch. Keep that in mind if you want to give Yum Cha a go.
The Honest Glutton
Always guaranteed good quality yumcha / dimsum here. The chicken feet here is flavoursome. Yum cha for two people here cost approx. $60. The only thing is dishes come in 3 pieces so bringing a 3rd person would be easier to share

I would suggest that you do not go to the late session yum cha on Sundays. The trolleys with what ever wasn't taken by the earlier session just go around and around. Variety is limited. The fried food is cold. You can order some things but we were told that some items we requested were sold out. The steamed food we did get was delicious.

Came here today for family lunch and the dishes were nothing but delicious. So rich of MSG though wish it could be authentic. Experience could’ve been better, the person at the start with glasses was very rude when placing the plates on the table. Throwing them onto the table like frisbees, if your gonna work at least be polite and make a good impression.

Beautiful food friendly staff with a smile. Mill is such a friendly person love it greets you with a smile every time. Thanks for the hospitality.

Had tan cha lunch with company friends to celebrate CNY. Prawn dumpling are always western friends 'S favorite. Mango pudding is my favorite, and love 炸果
Used to be one of my favourites for myself & the family to attend on functions & seasonal outings all up still is. But there has been a few noticeable downfalls due to floor staff, and service other than that food is still good and pricing always been a little steep but that is the saying you get what you pay for.
Some Bunee Loves Food
Family favourite for yum Cha and chill. The waiters are friendly but sometimes seem to ignore our table when going as a couple. The dim sums are traditional types and average. They taste ok but none really was memorable.

Gold leaf has been a staple for family lunches on Sunday mornings for me for more than 6 years. Over this period of time the food has always been exceptional, their dinner menus providing quality but at a very high price however, and their yum cha providing the best dumplings! The only thing gold leaf has to work on is their customer service which is significantly lacking. Overall i do 100% recommend coming here for quick dumpling fix for lunch! Thank you for having us and always deliver exceptional food :)

If you're going on the weekend make sure you book first. It's super crowed as most families visit for the lunch session. Lots of options for yum cha and food were fairly fresh. We like the selection of dumplings and non dumplings dishes. The price is also dearer compared to other places. The let down was the service as staff doesn't look happy and seem to 'throw' our orders on the table some of the time. In addition, we felt the cashiers was rude; it's like once we went to pay there was no need for customer service as the staff didn't acknowledge any customers and just merely demand the payments.

Terrible service, we arrived in your sunshine restaurant at about 6:10pm 11/10/2018 and as soon as I opened your door I was startled by one of your sourly, unsmiling, crouching waiters lurking behind the door. I nearly jumped out of my skin when he appeared from hiding behind the door. Unsmiling looking at me and my family with absolute disgust in his eyes. I wanted to leave then but we always come to your restaurant each birthday we have in our family. I asked for a table of four and without a word of greeting he showed us through. Then proceeded to take our order with such regret. Among the dishes we ordered was Peking Duck and paid $65 dollars with the total bill coming at about $200. The waiter served us with an unsmiling, disconcerting, venomous demeanour that unsettled me from having a good time. What made me take notice for the final time was when he bent over our table to retrieve a dish he muttered 'Donkey'--e-hotee as if this was a little joke he was playing on me. His name was "Wilson." Never mind I thought but when he took apart the duck he only served us half with the other half disappearing into the kitchen area. We queried about what had happened to the rest of the duck and it was lucky that we did because 'Wilson' was not going to tell us. They were going to keep that duck for themselves even though we had paid for the whole duck! Next time I want to have a bad time I will come to your restaurant. What a disgusting experience. Wilson was lucky I had my daughter there. I will never again under any circumstances come to your restaurant and will pass on my comments to whomever will listen.

My score 3.5 stars. J & I had our first proper lunch back in Melbourne here, on the 18th of July. We used to Yum Cha all the time many years ago - tried lots of places & went to GL Preston once (not as good as here IMO). First up it was a Wednesday & hard to get a park nearby - either get there early or get a little exercise with a bit of a walk like us. Despite having a really large seating area, it was surprisingly full/busy - weekends must be crazy (booking essential I would say). Service was ok, vibe was nice & we were in a good position for the trolleys. Our favs were mainly the steamed prawn-mince dumplings with different extras (chive/coriander/spinach/etc). I didn't think the scallop dumplings were anything to rave about (or the Har Gow - although J liked them more than me). We had a chunky eggplant dish with prawn meat that was bland & a bit of a disappointment (as we love eggplant). Similar dish at Hao Phong Footscray is a killer! We also had Fried squid tentacles which were nice, but could have been warmer (would have again, but ensure straight from kitchen). Yum Cha is never cheap & this is at the pricier end for what you get. Would go again as a treat & target items better next time.

Definitely a busy place during the weekend. I would recommend a booking. The atmosphere gives off an enjoyable, fun vibe. Definitely one of my favorite yum cha places. I really enjoyed their prawn dumplings and the mango pudding!

Very average Chinese yumcha but the selection of food is not that great. The food is highly MSG concentrated and makes you extremely thirsty afterwards!
Tina
A very average yumcha restaurant. Food wise- seems to be a bit more overpriced compared to other places I've been. Quality is quite average. Nothing that stands out.

It’s hard to look for some delicious Chinese restaurants in west suburbs. My friends took me to Gold Leaf in sunshine. I pretty like dim sum here. If you are big fan of chicken feet, you should come to try. It’s so delicious and I like their service as well

Gold is just perfect if your heart desires chaats and other Indian fast food. Their chole bhathura, pav bhaji, and dahi papdi chat are fantastic. They also have a good selection of Indian Chinese and Punjabi dishes. The atmosphere inside the restaurant is quite good, though it can be a bit crowded with some waiting on Friday and Saturday evenings. The restaurant is generally open until around 10 on weekday, which makes it quite good. The pricing is also easy on the pocket. Overall, it is the ideal place for spur of the moment dining.

Two words: PEKING DUCK. And no, we’re not talking about the band. We’re talking about fresh, juicy, succulent duck cut in front of you to enjoy drenched in rich sauce and wrapped in a soft pancake. Need I say more?

Gold Leaf delivers. Quality tasty food, big servings and fresh ingredients. If you’re looking for a huge variety of authentic Chinese food, definitely give this restaurant a go. They are also very well known within west-side Asian families for their Yum Cha aswell! Definitely one of the best places to go for Chinese in the western suburbs.

Note: for those who that enjoy ambience, the ceiling is covered in mirrors and chandeliers for a enchanting feel. Walls draped in bright red curtains and seats decorated with gold. You almost feel like royal emperor/empress seated amongst your royal family.

Food: 4/5
Ambience: 4/5
Service: 4/5
3.5. Our go-to place for yum cha in the western suburbs. Have been here for yum cha lunch and dinner numerous times over the years and it's always served consistently good food. There is a wide variety of dumplings and the har gao is slightly bigger than usual which is a bonus. The staff are mostly helpful, although there have been times our order was forgotten in busier hours or not understood and ignored. Recommend booking.

An incredibly busy place for yumcha on weekends. The variety of the yumcha dishes are great here and they are also tasty. Their chicken feet dish and their suckling pig is amazing. Some of the waiters are difficult to understand and communicate in english but they still serve you with good manners. The space is quite big to cater large groups of people although the parking space is quite limited.
Robin Lin
The soft crab was over cooked. The sea cucumber and he ablalon pot, abalone taste like canned one. Oyster is fresh and good price.Others are OK. The service was a bit slow

I always like to indulge in yum cha a great opportunity to catch up with groups of friends and family.

The weekend is very busy so make sure you book ahead. We had a variety of dumplings and the portions were quite generous and yummy too.

An incredibly busy Sunday where big groups of friends and family would come to dine in and experience their famous yum cha. We turned out to be on the waiting list for almost 40 mins.

We were seated in the corner therefore the trolleys did not roll to us for a good 15 mins, so they do need to work on how they make the trolleys circulate the whole building because we felt a little left out. When we received our choices of food it tasted like your average yum cha, secret kitchen still holds my favourite yum cha place! My favourite dish today was the chicken feet, it was fall of the bone and the sauce tasted divine!

Would recommend for big groups since the venue is quite spacious but be aware they get crazy busy on weekends during lunch rush.

For about 7 dishes (including deluxe ones as well) two people came to about $57.10

A lot of space at Gold Leaf and is still very packed but despite that all the food was wonderful and with the fast pace the staff can keep up with its highly recommended by myself

Service: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Taste: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Ambiance: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Value: ⭐️⭐️

The selection of dumplings was great. There were many unique dumplings that I have never seen before. I enjoyed the Crispy Taro Puffs with Scallop and King Prawn dumplings.

The service was surprisingly good, with a lot of English speaking students serving as waiters. Tea was refilled very quickly, and the food came really often.

A great place to have my chrysanthemum tea and enjoy a vast selection of dumplings with good service.
Jessica Cumine
Great selection for yum cha daily! Quality is still as great when they opened but unfortunately that’s all I can speak on behalf of. Their a la carte menu is great however the quality of each dish has diminished over the years. Not sure if it’s new chefs or what the situation is, all I can say is that there is room for improvement with food and service. In saying that, can not fault the yum cha menu the slightest :)
Munching With Mel
Chinese food at its best. Place has such a warm family vibe, with friends and families of many generations coming together to enjoy a special day. We ordered various kinds of prawn dumplings as well as fried sugarcane shrimp (chao tom) and chee cheong fun (banh cuon) with a side of juicy vegetables. I particularly enjoyed the chee cheong fun as Vietnamese have a similar dish which suits my palette. Will come back to try other chinese cuisines!

Food came was nice however was severely overpriced. Staff clearly did not enjoy their jobs and weren’t communicating with each...had to awkwardly wait for so long for service. Staff refused to answer regarding prices and wanted to place dishes that weren’t ordered on the table. For yumcha, staff have circled around...anyone that had yumcha for their first time would not know if they circled the correct category. Overall, was disappointed and will not return. There are other restaurants that are more fair priced, with better service and food.
Tina
Came in for yumcha.
Food: Decent, dishes are over priced. Egg tarts was the highlight of the entire meal.
Ambience: Bustling with energy, noisy during peak hours.
Service: Efficient at best. Staff are inattentive and unapproachable, most seem tired and over worked. Asked politely for items such as cutlery and dessert, which they forgot to bring out so we were left waiting for a long time.

Would not return to eat here due to shady work practices. They will accidentally mark dishes or not tell you the price of items when asked. Cashier will blindly follow order form, Manager will blame you for not double checking your bill.

Disappointing experience overall, won't be returning.
Jenny
Food - varies largely. Vegetarian fried rice is really good - a nice mix of textures and packed full of savoury flavour. The pork dish (some kind of rou pai) was nice - a sweet vinegary flavour which is not usually to my taste but they did well. The eggplant/pork mince dish was alright, but I wasn't a huge fan...... Personally I found the dishes all to be a little overly salty and too oily however this is very subjective. (+3 stars)

The satay beef stir fried rice noodles were terrible (see picture). It smelled burnt just from the steam. The burnt flavour could be tasted in the noodles, vegetables/meat and the cornflour sludge. I've had satay beef stir fried rice noodles in various place around Melbourne (and recently in Guangzhou and Hong Kong) and I have never seen it look so sludgey. On my opinion it clearly was not made properly. (We cancelled this dish and ordered the fried rice instead) (-1 star)

Service - the waiters were prompt for the most part and decent. There was a mistake with the receipt where they charged us for the cancelled dish as well as the replacement, however the staff were prompt in resolving this once pointed out. (+1 star)

However... When we asked the waiter about the burnt tasting noodles, he called the manager over. The manager, in an incredibly condescending tone of voice told us that we might not know, but stir fry is meant to be a little burnt tasting due to the way it is cooked in a wok (as the flame can flare up around the sides when using a wok) (rough translation as he and my parents were speaking in Mandarin Chinese, and my Chinese is not very good). He relented and allowed us to cancel the dish, but told us that he would not bring a replacement and that we should pick a different dish as we did not know what stir fry should taste like. (-1 star)

Value for money - the dishes are expensive, however they also provide a large quantity of food. As we do not have big appetites, we had a fair amount of leftovers from the three dishes we ordered. I personally felt the quality of the food was mediocre for the most part. (±0 stars)

Overall, I give Gold Leaf a 2/5.

Would I return? Personally no.
Lizzie Eats Melbourne
😱Lizzie’s first impression: I have been here over 10 times over the course of the years and it has always been very consistent regardless of yumcha or dinner.

🍩Lizzie enjoyed: It is one of the best places for yumcha in the west and you really can’t go wrong! They have many selections and varieties to choose from - the outstanding ones being the siu mais and the egg tarts are to die for.

🍅Lizzie did not enjoy: parking is horrendous at peak hour so make sure you book a time just before it!

🥇Lizzie rates overall: a great place for yumcha if you’re close by but many other surburbs have golf leaf too.

Hello. Imnikki
UPDATED REVIEW
We still come here for yum cha quite often, and nothing much has changed in terms of the food since my last review. Yet, one thing that has gone rapidly downhill is the attitude of staffs. Twice in a row, we noticed that staffs "accidentally" mark an extra dish on our order, or mark the dish as a more expensive item. If this happen to you, please remember to get them to cancel the mistake AND initial/sign next to the amendment. Otherwise, the manager or the cashier will insist that it's their policy to blindly go with the order form and charge you as is. They will also conveniently have not one, but a few example of other order forms from customers who paid just before you to show you how the amendment should look like.

FIRST REVIEW - 02/05/2016
Whenever my partner's parents come to visit, yum cha-ing at Gold Leaf is our weekend routine. Fuss-free and affordable, don't be expect to be wowed but just settle down and enjoy a huge variety of dishes until you have to roll yourself out of the door. The food is above average but nothing too spectacular. Service is quick and efficient, especially during peak hours when they aim for high turnover. If you show up without a booking, be prepared to wait but bear in mind that it is easier to get a table for 2 or 6 compared to a table for 4. Dinner time service is a different story altogether. The staffs are much more relaxed and you are unlikely to be met with a crowd at the door. The noise level in the restaurant is definitely much more tolerable at night. The food served during dinner time also hovers between average and above average; a tad oily but good flavours and generous portion size.
Maddison Amy
Very disappointing service. We were served by trainee staff who from what we could see were not being supported by management. Asked to see the menu for dessert and got given the bill instead. Would not recommend. Food was ok but overpriced for what is was. Air conditioning was on so high we left straight after we had eaten.
Jasmine
Great service and they're willing to check on things for you once you get on their good side.
Definitely an enjoyable experience!

Spent roughly $30pp here.

Food:
The food is good but not great, and overpriced for what you get. The service was quick and friendly and the atmosphere was ok.........

Came on a Saturday afternoon with family and the place was absolutely packed. Mainly serving typical yum cha food, it was actually pretty decent.
Ct.eats
The whole experience here was meh, we had yum Cha here the place at 12 was packed and we had to line up to get seated. Service like a typical Chinese restaurant it's quick and no questions to be asked. The food how ever is a different story compared to taipan (which is now closed) the price is very steep and food overly greasy. But the traditional dishes like chicken feet or dumplings are done well. I would recommend secret kitchen in the city although the place is a bit expensive, quality is way better!
Danielle Nguyen
Definitely my go-to restaurant for dumplings and roast duck. Firstly because it is close to my house and secondly, you can't go wrong. The food is always the same every time I come here.
MG
Busy, noisy and extremely crowded but yum cha here delivers all you need from a good Cantonese place for a Sunday brunch. It's a family favourite and has been for years. Make sure to never leave without trying their egg tarts. Prawn and chive dumplings are a hit too.
The Gastronomist
Very flavoursome food here. Apparently you can get an Asian version menu and an English menu for the not so adventurous. Even if you order from the English menu, you got to ask for the cold cuts entree; best with beer or wine.

Nothing special about this place. Average service, below average food and shifty price changes. I went the other day towards the end of the day and had some noodles and crab. The noodles were soggy and there was barely any crab meat. I've had this dish before but this time they charged much more than what it should be. Never coming again.
Brendan Cao
Service is just so shit, cant cope with it. When i went to the toilet, i saw one of the workers named Kevin, He took a shit while standing up. Never ever coming back

Have been to their branch in Springvale, decor pretty much remains similar. We walked in at 2pm, which i think is just an hour before they officially close@ 3pm.

Two trolleys did 2 rounds, however there were two more tables who arrived after us as well. We got our usual Pork Spare ribs steamed, prawn dumplings, pork dumplings and few more and finished with Mango pudding and milk.

Seems like service level has dropped since my few visits, however food quality remains!!

Foodie Lover
Beaware of a rudy female staff. Waitress with the trolley obviously limited english so I assumed she could speak vietnamese. I asked her nicely but she gave the biggest cringe and pushed the trolley away. Staff like that should not work here, especially its a place full of customers. You're lucky enough for one star. What a cranky old fag. But there are also lovely staff whos polite and wonderful. But one staff can actually kill your day.
Uy
Peking duck was good, however stir fry dishes are average. Minimal meat with heaps of vegetables for the price of $30+, heavily deep fry peking beef with barely any actual meat in there. Though, the male staff who was serving us was very friendly.
GG
Food and variety is fantastic! But super busy all the time so definitely need to book to get a table. Hard to find parking during peak times. But the great food attracts me back every time.
Samuel Kanagaraj
Waiting in the queue to get a table says it all. I love the ambience, helpful staff and yes the food. Delish! These guys are quick with their service, bringing food to the table. I had yum Cha on Sunday with my wife at this place. Recommend this place greatly. Great experience.

Came here for a function and I was happy since I was craving Chinese food all week!!!
The crab meat was so nice but the shells were quite annoying to deal with and it gets messy (that's why I took half a point off)
The flavours in each food were incredible !!! Like the black bean deer (I was told it was deer but it tasted like beef) was amazing and the so was all the fish and chicken!
Also had their chicken dumplings which had loads of flavour
Sylv
Come here occasionally for yumcha, food is always fresh and delicious. Customer Serivce is alright could be better, my all time favourite dishes are the black bean pork ribs and deep fried taro 👍 a good place to go with groups of friends or family.
Foodie Gal
My mum suggest to book yum cha from a gold leaf chain as they have a great reputation. And she was correct the food was fresh, hot, tasty and came out quick! But we had to hunt down the prawn dumplings. The decor could do with a update and the front was messy with old news papers on the floor. But hey they were busy and clearly people come for the food, not the presentation.
FASTER FINER FOOD REVIEW
I have lived in Sunshine for five years, so this is Yum Cha in The West, It's good, tasty, but nothing like Melbourne Yum cha where you get such a better variety of dumplings on offer. The staff are so friendly, most understand good English, some don't, but that's ok. The weekday menu is very basic, you have to order the things that you really like because they don't come out on the trays, weekends is much better but you MUST BOOK, or forget it, you could sit there waiting, waiting, waiting. I would love to know how to order the "good stuff" you see the Chinese eating, a mystery really. I like the place, noisy as all hell, but a good lunch time stuffer, always have a snooze afterwards.
Michael Nguyen
Went here for mother's Day. Yumcha was adequate. Some of the dishes were quite average in comparison to other Yumcha places. Service was relatively fast because of be high number of staff.
Just like any branch of this very popular franchise, you should either come early or book if you want to be seated as it is hectically busy.
So many tasty dishes to indulge in. Traditional decór and friendly staff.
My Food
Quality of the food is great. Dessert lady was nice and friendly. Weekends are always packed so better to make a booking. Overall I think its the only best yumcha in the western suburbs.

every dish here is amazing. occasionally there would be strands of hair in them though. the place is beautiful, such nice decor and mesmerising to look at. the spaces where the staff, who are very friendly, push the cart things is quite small and squishy which i quite dislike, however it doesn't bother me much unless they don't seem so friendly when you need to move your chair forwards... anyhow, it's a great place to take out your family on a special occasion. the manager is very kind.

Only ever been here for yum cha, but in saying that we have been a lot ! It's on par with any quality yum cha restaurant, great food with a lot of choice, you can order off the menu if you wish, only issues are, parking, it can be warfare trying to get a park and it can get very noisy in the restaurant

Yum cha is always great here. The family love to come here for birthdays and mothers/fathers day. Atmosphere and service is typical of most Chinese restaurants. Attentive enough but could always do with being a little more friendly and personable.

A popular place to have yum cha. Parking can be difficult on weekends during lunch hours. Favourite items are the mango pudding and the combination fried dumpling.

Came here mostly for yum cha. Plenty choices for dim sum, and overall the taste were pretty yum. My personal favourite: congee with century egg, the classic chicken feet, pork ribs, and tofu fa for dessert.

I went here for lunch today with 2 friends, one of them had never tried yum Cha before. What a disappointing way to pop a yum Cha cherry. First off when we were walking to the restaurant from the car park there was a really strong smell of garbage... great first impression for my friend 😳. The first trolley had this woman who didn't bother to explain what was in the trolley, instead she just put random things on our table and we had to ask her to take them back because that's not what we wanted. Most of the things we ordered didn't taste right for example the char siu was too salty, the pork in "silky" rice paper was dry and the rice paper was grainy, when we told a staff member that we weren't happy with this dish she didn't care, she just said nothing. My friends didn't like the tofu scallop but I liked it. We were in the middle of the restaurant and we just had the same trolleys passing us, we had to ask for the crappy pork in tofu a few times, it was the same with the Chinese broccoli. We did see the trolleys with different stuff on the other side of the restaurant but they never passed us. We did like the calamari. My friend who really likes the Gold Leaf in Preston was disappointed with this one and I'm surprised my yum Cha Virgin friend wants to try another yum Cha after this. I think I should give up on Gold Leaf all together and find different places to have yum Cha, there are plenty around. This is easily the worst yum Cha I've ever been to in Australia (believe it or not I had even worse in Japan.)

Good Food. But service can be a little slow and food is pricey. But having said that it's one of the better Chinese restaurant in the Western Suburbs.

Variety choice of dim sim dishes, food is delicious & service is great. Our family always come here for yumcha! The place is always busy so you will have to prebook a table.

When it comes to Yum Cha, Gold leaf always pops up out of mind. We tried this one in Sunshine and found quite satisfactory. The first thing is, we are seated without waiting which is so lucky! There are lots of Yum Cha selections and all of them look nice. The only bad side is, it is too crowded inside and we even have to ' shout' to talk.

Must make the booking! We were told that we don't need book over the phone, but when we turned up, we were made to wait for nearly an hour, and the manager was still trying to seat those who have booked. You can tell that the manager is giving preference to the Vietnamese customers as well. Be aware or you may step 2 hours waiting.

We went here for fathers day lunch and we were pleased with it. There were plenty of choices and almost all of them tasted great and none tasted bad. The service were quite standard and pretty happy that the empty plates were taken away in a reasonable time. The fried squid here, one of my favourite dim sums, was very good though the batter could be improved. The chicken feet were probably one of the mediocre ones, it lacked taste tho it's still not bad too

I haven't been back to gold leaf sunshine for yum cha for a while now but I was in the area last week so popped in for my yum cha fix. The yum cha was decent and reasonably priced for what was on offer. The one thing that really made my day was their duck web salad with jellyfish. This dish is one of my favorite dishes and it is rare to find because of the amount of work that goes into deboning the duck web and also the acquired taste. Not your everyday dish but certainly one that make my day.

I fancy a tasty Yumcha session once a while, this experience was no exception. The food tastes a lot better now as if the Chefs have changed. However, the waitering staff weren't polite and only cleared our tables when we requested. Otherwise, great yumcha joint down sunshine.

Lovely service, booked a table for my dad's birthday. For the amount of food we had ordered I was expecting a crazy bill but for 7 adults and 1 toddler the bill was just shy of $300 with food to take home! After we had paid the bill we were given complimentary glasses of port. Such a lovely surprise, also our waiter was always smiling, didn't catch his name though. Some of the waitresses didn't look to happy to be working... lucky we had the happy guy.

Fantastic! High end Chinese food with exceptional service. Every dish is a winner. I really enjoyed the Honey Pepper Beef. Great for special occasions.

The dim sum here is very good. Service, touch and go but that's to be expected at a busy Chinese restaurant. Not many speak fluent English but enough to tell you what dim sum they're serving.

Highly recommend booking a table for weekend yum cha or risk standing in line for a long while (unless you get there 10 minutes before opening).

They do have high chairs/kid seats but make sure you ask for it as soon as you get to your table as they can run out.

Must haves:
- stewed beef tendon
- special rice noodles with fried Chinese cruller (char leung)
- salted egg custard steamed buns

The hustle and bustle of the place only adds to the yum cha dining experience!
Our Foodie Finds
A stones throw away from the Sunshine Shopping complex sits Gold Leaf just off Ballarat Road. A clear favourite amongst locals near and far as its constantly packed and don't remember the last time we were we ever invited here for an event and it wasn't.

We had a few dishes here which were good and as expected from a high volume restaurant such as the Roast crispy pork $23.5, roasted duck $26.5, stir fried mixed vegetables $21.5, special fried rice $18.5 along with a couple of others and also a few small dishes. Desserts were pretty standard, having the mango pudding & ice cream $10.8 and banana fritter & ice cream $9.5.

Service is as expected with ample staff servicing the floor however it's also standard with some staff struggling with speaking english but do as best they can.

We wouldn't come here on purpose but it's not bad for when you're invited. Till next time, this is Our Foodie Find!

Terrible service. We were a table of 7 and we came on a Wednesday. We were seated all the way at the back even though there were plenty of space in the centre of the room. Trolleys of food came in 15 minute intervals. We ordered a totally 3 dishes to which only 1 dish came out, so we canceled the rest. We were there for a total of 1.5 hours and only receive about 6 dishes of food. For 7 people. We spoke to the supervisor and he acknowledge us and he went to tell a trolley lady to come past the back. They then never came back. We left not full not satisfied. this play has been a family favorite for years, such a disappointment. Never returning. Going to Plume highpoint instead.

Great yumcha, the staff also handle large groups very efficiently and well. Good presentation and politeness. Would recommend to friends/family

group of us went out for the public holiday weekend, was a little iffy at the start but WOW super food.
great food and amazing service we felt very comfortable.
food came out nice and hot and the spices and flavors were spot on.
i will be back there again, keep up the good work

Initially this joint seemed expensive to me however on seeing the portion size, I didn't feel that. Sitting is a bit constricted. A bit more space would be nice. We were 6 on one of those round tables and were absolutely running out of space. The standout food would be the jumbo prawns with wasabi. The thick juicy prawns were yum and the wasabi was mellowed down quite a bit. Loved it, devoured it. The Peking duck with pancakes were awesome so was the shredded lamb in schezwan sauce. The complementary port wine and dark chocolate at the end of the meal does give a nice touch..

We come here regularly for our Yumcha fix. This time we decided to call and make a booking before we arrived which was a fantastic idea, normally we wait for about half an hour before we are seated depending on the time we arrive. Every time we have come here it is full.
The dumplings are always so pleasant and tasty and so much variety, and the fried calamari is one to try keep in mind it's quite oily and salty. We always order a side of Coke to go with the food I highly recommend this. You must also try the Chinese broccoli with oyster sauce!! Keep in mind that you will need lots of water throughout the day but worth a try!
Cristian
This is a regular yum cha venue for us.

We've been quite a few times and the food has always been good. We're big fans of the dumplings and anything with prawns involved.

Be prepared that the food will be oily and you do feel thirsty throughout the day after but don't let that deter you. The variety provided by the constant carts coming around is also a positive but I would definitely call before and make a booking as this place is packed every weekend because it is quite popular.
Tony
This place is nice on a weekday where it's not overfilled with people screaming at each other as they talk. The food as usual is great... unfortunately, forgot to take photos after the first lot.
Phuong Phan
One of my favourite yumcha places. Weekends are always generally busy which is a good sign. Food is great and the different variety always goes around with a quick manner.

Probably the best chinese restaurant in melbourne, my family and i frequent this place weekly, we always have our big family celebrations here. the yum cha here is fun and authentic with the carts zipping around. it is always packed and buzzing on the weekend. the variety of dumplings is the best i have seen, it always comes out hot and tasty!
