If I could give it a zero star, I would. Absolutely horrendous service, with just about average food. The waiting staff is arrogant and has absolutely no sense of customer service. The restaurant didn't seem that busy when we were there, but the wait staff behaved as if they are doing us a huge favour by attending to us. Our table was not set when we reached there after having made a reservation. We weren't served water until halfway through the meal and the glassware was not even washed, to the extent that it had lipstick marks on them. The waitress was offended when we got up and took our own cutlery as it was not provided even after repeatedly asking for it. She was offended to the extent of calling us rude for such a minor issue... The chef had to come out of the kitchen to placate her. Minutes later, when we asked for some more cutlery as whatever we got ourselves wasn't sufficient, the same waitress had the nerve to confront us aggresively, arms akimbo, that how can we call her inefficient! Once again the chef had to come out, and just tried to cover up for his wait staff, saying they were having a busy night. This when we were the only people left at the place. As for the food, the quality was just about average. But I did not know that a large bowl of nachos only has about 10 odd corn chips. I have had store bought frozen burritos that had more flavour than what I was served here. The ribs and the Margherita were the only saving grace of an otherwise ruined dinner. Avoid at any cost... Walk for 5 mins over to the Guzman Gomez which will serve you better food without the staff creating a nuisance...

Twice the price of say Guzman and Gomez and not even half as good. The chicken enchilada was just a mush or grey chicken pieces that tasted old and pre made frozen. It was all just gross mush. When I rang the the restaurant they couldn’t even include some hot sauce for me…terrible service. I should have paid attention to the reviews

I cannot speak more highly of my visit. Amazing food, super friendly and helpful staff and great Mexican decor. It was a super busy night apparently and there were only 2 servers working, but they managed to get our order out quickly and were still smiling. Great atmosphere. Can't wait to return for another awesome dinner! 10/10

Came here on a quiet night and had wonderful service. Serving size was generous and the beef taquitos were AMAZING. They had options for both vegan and vegetarian. Tried the vegetarian enchilada and burrito and both were pretty good. The size of the jug of margarita was massive and they were DELICIOUS! 100% recommend

Ordered the most exp expensive item on menu: fajitas.. supposed to be sizzling.. not at all asked waitress why it wasn't sizzling and she told me it was once! All downhill from there. Steak was so tough I could neither cut nor chew it. The steak I felt was boiled and toss in sauce.. really yuck!!@ stay away don't waste your money.

Popped in for an early dinner with the Fam, staff where so friendly efficient and on the job, the food was great and the price was pretty standard for what we had, nice atmosphere also. Would nearly have stretched to 5 stars but we make a pretty mean nachos ourselves, all in all was a nice experience. Thanks guys :)

Wish I had read the reviews before I came along with my family Firstly our meals took quite a while to arrive Then they served the entrees with the main meals and when the waitress was advised of the case she was offended and tried to argue that it was because the system didn’t recognise that it was an entree Instead of what any professional hospitality staff member would do and just accept gracefully, the staff member stood and argued that it was some how our fault and not hers. She was also over heard talking about us and even shook her head as she passed us. Disgusting! Such a pity as the older waitress before her who served our drinks was very nice Then when we went to pay they refused the two for one discount as it was all on one bill and because we split the bill we weren’t entitled to any discounts despite the fact that they advertise two for one with out any wording of only if you are table for two Not one person on our table was entitled to the two for one What a scam! Most of the meal was nice Mine was mediocre to say the least Don’t recommend the shredded beef burrito Will not be going here again if it’s the last place open

Food is bland mush. Nachos had about 15 chips on the whole plate! It was meant to be a large. Chicken was disgusting and tastless, it was like little pieces if frozen stuff they microwave or something. Overpriced for the quality. Gave it 2 stars as the food came at a good pace and the waitress was nice. I would not recommend.

Fajitas were presented in a sickly sweet marinade and some of the meat was not tender. Usually I would make up all the wraps (they are small) and then eat the remaining meat - today barely could eat two wraps and ate a few pieces of meat, left the rest. Told the staff member who served us who made the ridiculous comment "well you ate half of the dish so couldn't have been that bad". Been to this restaurant before and never had this issue with the Fajitas, today they were awful. Wife liked the ribs though.

Poor service and bad communication. We should have read the poor reviews before coming. Will not make the same mistake twice.<br/><br/>As we came into the restaurant we were ushered to our seat straight away (only a few in there on a Wednesday night) We sat down and ordered.<br/><br/>We had a an entertainment book voucher because we are at that stage in our lives where we need to save for our mortgage.<br/><br/>At the end of our meal I went to pay and was unable to use this voucher. I was told that I should have seen the fine print poster at the front as I walked in... I believe it was totally unreasonable to expect that from your customers. I visited your business because of this discount docket. The so called entree nachos and main meal cost $50...<br/><br/>Just overall disappointed with the meal and the way the whole situation was delt with. Being a local business is great but you need to be also for the locals as well.

Pretty basic Mexican food and not really super tasty either. I don't know why people love this place. Edible but nothing exciting.<br/>Pretty bland.

We always love coming to Montezumas. The chorizo enchilada is amazing! I like the atmosphere too. I recommend it for anyone travelling or staying on the coast.

Horrible experience with bad staff that spoke back to us. Food was ok but they screwed up our order multiple times. <br/>When it came to the end the refused to split the bill. <br/>Come on, how hard is it to split a bill. <br/>We had 9 people and we're only splitting it into 3. <br/><br/>Very rude. If you want Mexican. Find some place else. <br/>

Beautiful Dècore inside and out, wonderful service, food was ok, had a lovely experience here for we have not tried this place before. Would come back and try out the tacos

Personally, I adore Montezuma's. I realise it's westernised Mexican food but I find myself craving it all the time! The food is yummy and addictive and always comes out hot. It's cheap food so it's easy to keep going back. This particular one has a nice, dim outdoor area for those humid nights. The portions are great and it's a very casual and relaxed vibe in the restaurant.

The day we went has promotion, 2 meins for 1!!! Good deal. We ordered Chicken Mexican and Montezuma Delight! I shared with other girl friend and was enough. Had a big delicious dinner

Not a good experience. Awful service, we were a group of 4 all paying cash and we could not split the bill - the waiter was not helpful in the slightest and refused to tell us the prices so we could figure out how to pay for our meals. On the menu it states something like 'it's your night we will do anything make it a enjoyable experience' yet they wouldn't help us split our bill even though there were not any other customers. <br/>The food was so below average. The vegetarian burrito tasted like canned refried beans in a tortilla with tomato sauce, the beef nachos were best described as 'cat food' and the Mexican rice was bland and over grilled. Probably the worst meal we had on the Gold Coast - definitely should have listened to the Google reviews and paid attention to the fact the restaurant was empty

Tried an enchilada and the nachos, both were very good portion sizes and delicious. Came out hot from the oven, it was rather difficult to wait for the food to cool down a bit before we could dig in. We also tried the sangria which was average tasting. Average service.

Worst Mexican food. Absolutely foul! I'd be interested to know how much actual beef is in what this restaurant calls " beef". Don't waste your time or money.

The worst Mexican ever. I went to this restaurant late last year and it was so bad I wrote a review on trip advisor. I recently saw that they had responded to my review suggesting I only have them a bad review as my side dish of guacamole wasn't free. Not true. I don't remember this at all but do remember dry and burnt 'mole poblano' with hardly any sauce. I also remember telling the waitress that 'this is not mole poblano'. Not only are they the worst Mexican restaurant I have ever been to (and I know as I have lived in Mexico and also frequently visit family in Californa so I know good authentic Mexican), they are also liars. Disgraceful!

Worst restaurant ever!. We first waited over 20 minutes to be seated after seeing two groups that arrived after us seated. Then waited over an hour for food before walking out. Completely understaffed with too many tables. Worst restaurant ever. Never coming back

Anyone that likes this place hasn't had Mexican before - so bland no flavour and slow lazy staff - why would you go?

If Basil Fawlty ran a Mexican restaurant .... It would be like this. <br/><br/>Arrived at 7pm with a group of four adults and four children. Promptly ordered some dips, kids meals and our meals. Twenty minutes later, no sign of food. We queried the baffled-looking waitress, who said it would be served within fifteen minutes. Soon after, I saw the chef wander out of the kitchen and grumpily flap his arms in the waitress's direction before disappearing back into the kitchen. At 8pm, with still no food in evidence and the kids complaining of painful hunger, one of our group more forcefully queried a different waitress. The staff soon converged on the kitchen for some kind of conference, before the bartender (or bartender/manager) approached us and started with the apologies.<br/><br/>Our order somehow never made it the ten feet to the kitchen. There was no food coming. Bartender-manager guy took my wife's contact details so the owner could offer some kind of recompense (presumably a free meal ... er, pass on that), but we've yet to hear a peep. Our only option at that time of night, with desperately hungry kids in tow, was the golden arches. And despite having to endure the shame of eating in such a place (Mickey D's in Cavill Avenue ... shudder), I still believe we dodged a bullet that night. It was a meal that never was, and was probably never meant to be; and unless I find myself completely broke and wandering the streets of Surfers Paradise with a shopping trolley full of my hobo clothes and a free meal voucher to Montezuma's, will *never* be.

Sorry this is not mexican food. The food was bland with no mexican taste. I would not recommend to anyone.what makes these restaurant survive I have no idea..it's obvious that those who liked it have not had good mexican food.

Great little venue, very busy.Meals are good size, our eyes were too big for our stomachs and we could not finish the meal. Great staff and service. A good night!

"Average". We've been here a few times, it's ok, but I do think it was a bit average. I had the borrito's, and they were very bland, no flavour or spice, like Mexican should be! Don't know if we'll return??

Terrible. Montezumas was my favourite all time restaurant, regular diners to all restaurants. The standards for this restaurant has really really dropped. Cubed chicken in an enchilada and nachos, seriously??? Very small portions even for someone on 1200 caloric benchmark. Expensive, small portions and poor ingredients, we will never eat there again.

This was the first "Mexican" I had in Australia. Absolutely disgusting, I suggest someone actually takes a trip to Mexico to figure out what that bland slop they call burrito filling is actually based on. Thank goodness places like Guzman y Gomez are starting to turn Mexican around in Australia.

Don't like it, LOVES it!. This was my second visit to Montezuma's Surfers, and it was even better than the first time (if that is possible). The layout of the restaurant is themed and fun, and the service is amazing.<br/><br/>We ordered a trio of tacos per person, and had a shared plate of the nachos. The nachos are a must, they are definately worth buying. The good thing about the tacos are that you can order different varieties, and not have the same flavour (which can get quite dull). I ordered the vegetarian, shredded beef and chicken, all very high quality, and I can't seem to decide which one was my favourite. <br/><br/>We also ordered 1/2 litre of the strawberry margarita. Probably the best margharitas I've ever tasted, very fresh in taste (but a little warning, they are a little bit strong, well for me anyway).

Great place to spend a Birthday!. The staff were brilliant, the Free Birthday cocktail went down fabulously and the food was delicious! We will definitely be recommending this place to friends that head over for a holiday. We had a great evening so thanks! :)

Diana. Like all the Montezumas tends to be a bit tex mex, however they do a great hot sauce if you ask for 10x10. I always have the Montezumas delight with beans my fave vegetarian dish & very filling, Their dips are not too bad either

We had been to Aztec in Broadbeach years ago and we were staying in Surfers so we decided to try Montezumas. We were a bit put off by the bad reviews but tried it anyway and I am so glad we did! I was able to order a half serving of the nachos which was perfect for me - & only $12! My parents and my partner were also thrilled with their meals, and we had a voucher where you got one meal free so for 4 meals it only cost $60 - and one meal was $26, so very reasonably priced! Will definitely be back!

Chocolate Chicken!. Mole Poblano is the Chocolate Chicken dish with a nice sauce, lots of herbs, finished off with coconut, banana and pineapple.... it was interesting on the menu, and so nice that it was worth a second shot!<br/><br/>Other food were traditional Mexican dishes, the dimly lite areas created the ambience.Traditional decor.<br/><br/>Recommended if not for the chocolate chicken alone!

One of my fav places in surfers, food is great drinks are cheap and wait staff are good. I would go back anytime.

Food was ok... Service is slow, very slow. The cocktails were not up to par. A bit pricey for the quality of the food. Not recommended.

I went for dinner here the other night found staff rude and food poor.. Might look a bit further a feild next time I go for Mexican

Brilliant food and a great bar man. It's a bit pricy but it's worth every penny. I would definetely come back here.

It was literally a mouthful of flavours while I think the mole may not be for everyone, I loved the slightly bitter taste of the chocolate fused with the kick of chilli and herbs and generously dipped my chicken into it again and again.
