Review Blue Eye Dragon - Sydney

Delicious and perfect food. In house made dumplings are plump, fresh and so tasty and some of the best I've had. Don't forget to ask for the home made chilli. Service is polite and professional in a clean and comfy space. A weekly go to for our office. I can highly recommend.

We had the seafood banquet. The food is okay to my taste. Nothing particularly stood out. Perhaps the beef main was the most to my liking. The scallop was a bit chewy. I liked the Competition Grade Oolong Tea.

Service was friendly however the food was largely sub-par. None of the dishes tasted authentic and presentation was not great either. Definitely did not taste authentic Asian, let alone Taiwanese. Got the $72pp banquet - best dish was probably the crispy chicken bites. Beef pancake was a bit strange and pork belly was too sweet. Ginger shallot chicken tasted as bland as it looked.. Dumplings also tasted store-bought unfortunately. Lovely staff but overpriced, inauthentic Asian food.

We had dinner at this restaurant before going to a musical. The food was very delicious, especially the prawns & scallops. The ambience/ atmosphere was great, cozy and elegant. The mochi cake for dessert wasn’t as good as I thought, but overall loved the experience.

Sadly, I couldn’t take any photos of the great dinner experience. We ordered the shared entree, the rib eye and chicken with sprouts (I believe) as mains and it was all delicious. The waiters took really good care of us and made sure all went smoothly. 10/10 recommended and will definitely be going back.

Excellent authentic Taiwanese food! So glad we finally visited. Lovely service and attentive staff with a calming and relaxing environment. Highly recommend the banquet for 3 people and you must have the tender beef! Good food portions and be careful not to over order :) Will be back.

We dined with Muriel and the team again on Saturday 2/4 and, unsurprisingly, we were blown away again by the service, atmosphere and the food. We had the banquet and every dish that was served was fresh, with beautiful flavours. The meal was bountiful and the wine we chose was an equal match for the meal. This restaurant is highly recommended for any occasion - romantic, business or family celebration, all you have to do is book and be amazed.

We always love coming here and on a cold Tuesday night this week we were not disappointed. Warm and welcoming Muriel and her team are marvellous. All the food is delicious, the dumplings, crispy bean curd roll stuffed with chicken mince & water chestnuts are consistent favourites amongst many others, and of course always the pork belly. A new dish of braised cabbage with bacon bits was a hit too. Don't usually have room for dessert but this time winter appetites were able to fit in rice cakes and house made ice cream. So yummy and a good choice of reasonably priced wines. So lucky to have this restaurant in our 'hood. Tkyu Muriel, Lorraine & George.

Impressive, the faultless service was complemented by some excellent (different & vary tasty) food. I will make this my go to place when visiting Star City.

Didn't think it was open until we went through the entrance Once we did everything was wonderful. The service, decor and importantly the food were all excellent

Never disappointed. This restaurant is for any occasion. Nothing is any trouble for the staff and the food is amazing.

Our experience at B.E.D was curious and largely disappointing. Having moved to Pyrmont an year and heard all about the restaurant's previous incarnation on Harris Street from neighbours, we finally decided to commit to dinner here on Saturday. Nobody had actually given it a double thumbs up but nobody had bagged it either.

I must say it was a rather nice space what with actually being in a building that was once a church. We were quickly reminded that it was an Asian restaurant with the first interaction with the young lady waiting on us. I guess know what I mean....we shouldn't have asked about a wine or attempted friendly banter. She wasn't rude at all, she was just being the person who's task was serving us.

Settled on a bottle of red and then the starters - three in all. Two fails ! In fact two big fails ! How could the deep fried prawn have been chewy and the deep friend chicken be even worse ?!! It would be hard to come up with what we got even if one tried hard !! The third ( Stewed Beef shin) saved the day.

Nothing extraordinary with the mains that most Taiwanese restaurants would dish out though the
Ma-Po Tofu deserves special mention. Desserts were okay and we exited. Amused. All up a pleasant dinner and we walked off wondering if we'd go back again. We had no compelling reason to decide that we wouldn't either. They seemed to have the pedigree but just didn't try hard enough on the night. Nowhere near enough actually. Fortunately, Pyrmont has other good options.

I feel like this place is a hidden gem, it's in a random location but always busy. The restaurant is set up in an old church which is quite different, and the service was lovely. We ordered the entree tasting plate for two and the diced beef with black pepper sauce.
Best dish: pepper beef - the meat was so soft and tasty!
The scallops were overly fishy tasting to me so I wouldn't order again, but I did enjoy the dumplings and beef pancakes a lot. Spring rolls are a bit bland. Overall a great experience though, I would come again

The restaurant is in an old church building and not easy to find but the food is amazing. nothing fancy but very well prepared and carefully constructed dishes. perfect pork dumplings, beef pancakes, fried rice, garlic shrimp. Wish I lived in Sydney so that i could visit regularly.

This place is situated behind an old church this outlet is very quite and comfortable for sitting . We tried chinese and some indian food out there and all I can say is that it is a must visit place for everyone because due to church near it this place is very quite and peoples who want to spend some lovable time can go there.

It doesn't look like there's a restaurant there when you start to get close to Blue Eye Dragon. You'll probably say something like "It's got to be here somewhere, but this is a church here!" Fear not, you are in fact in the right place. Blue Eye Dragon is inside what looks like a former church hall. They've done a nice job in decking it out, yet they've managed to keep the character of the former hall as well in a tasteful way. We'd seen their menu online and already decided that we were going to have our own version of Taiwanese Tapas, because there were so many tasty looking smaller dishes.
Tanya
Extremely flavoursome food! The restaurant is actually situated in the back of an old church which I think is really funky. We bought their set menu options per head and we were very happy with the portion sizes and the quality of the food. Wine list is good but they don’t actually have spirits on their menu, you have to personally enquire and ask about them.

Has this place changed hands? It used to be a lot better. Food was very expensive and had a generic taste. They had put in dishes that we hadn't asked for (extra servings, rice) - and charged us as well! It didn't taste very authentic (I was with family - who are from Taiwan...) nor inventive... even if it wasn't authentic it didn't taste great. Three of the dishes had the same type of sauce - too salty, thick and just full of soy sauce. Very disappointed.

Overrated. Depends what you order, its a hit and miss. I've been there on three occasions. The presentation of the lobster is wow factory, but disappointed as it was over priced and tasteless. Impressive......., no not really.

Went there last night for my 25th birthday with friends. The atmosphere there is more suitable for date I think but I like it!
In terms of food, we have chosen 55 per head and tried the dishes recommended by the beautiful lady! A failure to choose all 6 entrees for deep fried but all taste nice. For the main, I love the stewed chicken with three cups sauce and beef steak!
Does My Bomb Look Big In This
Some restaurants fly quietly under the radar. I’m surprised to see it’s actually been more than five years since I last dined at Blue Eye Dragon. This is through no fault of the restaurant – which puts out interesting, well-executed Taiwanese food – I just only seem to remember it when I find myself starving in Pyrmont, and keen to avoid The Star. We popped through recently without a reservation, after the launch of a local bar left us hungry for more. With an understated exterior, even knowing this restaurant, it’s still hard repress a gasp when you open the doors into the cavernous church school hall dining room. It’s immediately apparent that this isn’t the usual Taiwanese fast-food outlet you might have become used to in Sydney – though they do that too, at Grain & Spice on Union Street. And with nary a whisper, the team from Blue Eye Dragon also opened Wu-Gu in Zetland last year. At that spot they are trotting out many of the same dishes as this original space, including Eye Fillet in House Black Pepper Sauce ($36). An exercise in extreme tenderness, these tasty hunks of eye fillet are...

Beautiful restaurant that is immaculate on the inside but totally unassuming of the outside. The food here is authentic Taiwanese with a high level of care and attention with all the dishes i had there. The atmosphere is crisp and fresh but with a sense of homely neighbourhood to it. The service is attentive and engaging. I highly recommend the Prawn omelette and the slow cooked pork belly. Get one of each dessert!

Interesting menu as it's not the typical Chinese

However the food was excellent and we enjoyed the ambience of the restaurant

Will come back

All dishes we had were beautifully prepared and fresh. The plum prawns were especially beautiful. Efficient friendly staff and nice ambience.

With the $50/pp (Mix) banquet you get to choose any 6 entrées and 4 mains including steamed rice which seemed to be a good way the dishes could be evenly divided up. The dumplings were tasty and quite large and the salt and pepper soft shell crab was anot

Going out for dinner during the week isn't something I like doing but it was needed. We'd had a huge day & wanted to try a local restaurant we've been hearing about since we moved here. (I embraced my inner beauty & went make-up free for dinner). We made

Tucked away in an old church-school is this rather extraordinary dining room housing Blue Eye Dragon , an award-winning Taiwanese restaurant. The dumplings at this off-the-beaten-track Pyrmont standout are a definite attraction - Pork Dumplings with Chives, Ginger and Shallot ($10) arrive plump and perfectly formed. If you like them as much as I did, buy a frozen take-home pack ($25/kg). Reasonably new to Taiwanese cuisine, I groped for analogies. There are definitely Mainland Chinese influences in dishes like impeccably battered Salt and Pepper Soft Shell Crab ($14) ; and it's a must-have. You'll also find Japanese influences, evident in moist and crunchy Deep Fried Chicken with Basil and Five Spice ($10) , which would be hard for anybody to dislike! Expect great restraint in flavour intensity, especially in the house-made fish sauce with the Queensland Scallops with Shallots ($21/6) . As a result the tasty produce sings - also evident in the well-cooked Wild Caught Barramundi (market

Salt and Pepper Soft Shell Crab. The Salt & Pepper Soft Shell Crab would have to be the best in Sydney as we have tried it at many Restaurants and they just don't do it as nicely as BED. Also the scallops are really yummy as are the Pork Dumplings.

Taiwanese food at its very best. We are regulars at Blue Eye Dragon, and not just because we are Pyrmont residents.

We keep going back for two reasons. First, the food is absolutely sensational, and consistently so. I understand the food is cooked by Muriel's mum (Muriel is the proprietor). Go mum!! It's hard to pick a standout dish as they are all great, but anything with scallops is to die for (scallops are only on the menu when those fat juicy ones are available – we try to find them at the Fish Markets, but Muriel must have bought them all up before we get there!). And then there's the duck egg wrapped in calamari and tofu (called "calamari rolls" on the menu) – we place an order for them even before we are seated.

Second, the service matches the food. Muriel is a dynamo and runs the place like clockwork. And she is on constant alert to make sure her guests are enjoying themselves. Jimmy, her 2IC, is equally welcoming and the rest of the staff (all Taiwanese, it would seem) are simply delightful.

Well done Muriel and the team. Could you just leave some of those scallops are asked next time you are out shopping?

Great atmosphere and food. Love this hidden gem
Can be hard to find the first time but after that there has been for us a second time a third time and so on , many freinds recommended and they all find the food to be outstanding , we have tried everything on the menu and the shared entree plate is excellant and blood prawns are my wifes favourite , for me the salt and peper crab is to die for.

Asian food in Western style setting. Wanted to try a different type of Asian restaurant rather than the typical Chinatown joints where the service is hit and miss.
Food tasted good but portion sizes were a tad on the small side for this Asian/Australian family.
Service was excellent which brings my rating up.

Delicious food. The food is delicious and the service was very good. A little on the pricey side, but overall a good experience.

Food is excellent accompanied by excellent atmosphere and service. Food is not too salty without any harsh flavouring. Definitely
Recommended.

-----05 Dec, 2013-----

Food is amazing, excellent service and decor. Don't know if their standards hold up if they get busy. Definitely recommend.

Lunch @ Blue Eye Dragon. Started with Stewed Beef Shin & Pork Dumplings. Absolutely devine! The Beef Shin simply melted in the mouth and great choice in accompanying sauce. The Pork dumplings were huge and the sauce accompanying this was fantastic. Mains were prawn fried rice (filled with large praws), Ginger Shallot Beef and chicken were mouth watering. All in all a great location, fantastic prices and the service is to a high standard. I would highly recommend this place

Thoroughly disappointing!!. As I am actually Taiwanese, I had high expectations of this restaurant. My husband and I firstly found this place hard to find as Google maps showed it being further down Pyrmont St. When we finally found it, it was disappointing to find there was really nothing authentically Taiwanese. The menu was actually just westernised Asian food - nothing wrong with that if you like that style. We ordered the beef pancakes which we had read great reviews but we found extremely salty beef in a doughy shallot crepe. The salt and pepper soft shell crab was also very salty. The gong bao Prawns were average. The steamed barramundi was the worst fish I have ever tasted and I love barramundi - it was very fishy and dense in texture. When the owner came to clear the barely eaten barramundi fish she asked if the fishy was Okay and I conveyed my feedback which she did not react or provide a partial refund. Overall, a 4/10 score. Never going back and don't waste your time or money!!

Recommend the entrees! So yummy! Beef pancakes, salt + pepper soft shell crab (crispy & delicious!), scallops & pork dumplings. All were absolutely delicious!! Next time we will skip mains & just eat a number of entrees, tapas style! Great restaurant in a handy spot. Love this history of the site & the quaint courtyard.

No longer byo. Lovely linen table cloths in a funky space. Good wine list. The seafood banquet is the go. Chicken chunks delicious, dumplings fresh and tasty, duck pancake delightful. Stir fry prawns with ginger, and the barramundi both lovely. But the beef in XO sauce is a highlight. Confusingly, and notwithstanding the menu stating 10 courses, only 8 courses for 3 people. That might sound like a petty grievance, but the "grin-fu%#ing" by the waiter was too much fun. Most pleasant.

Crispy prawn rolls with house plum sauce. Wonderfully crisp wonton skins and sweet and succulent prawn meat inside.

-----04 Aug, 2011-----

Calamari rolls with salted duck egg and seaweed. Nice and crispy outside and a little decadence with the salty duck egg yolk.

-----04 Aug, 2011-----

Deep fried prawns with house plum sauce. I like this dish because the batter is beautifully crisp and the prawn cutlet fresh and succulent with a beautiful sweet sour plum sauce.

-----04 Aug, 2011-----

Chinese steamed dumplings. These dumpling skins were soft and delicate while the filling full of flavour. The black vinegar is the perfect dipping sauce with its gentle sweet sour taste.

BYO gone wrong. I had been to Blue Eye Dragon before and really enjoyed it. It was BYO before so we took wine with us. Our waiter explained that they now had a license, but because we had the wine with us no problem. We thought that was really nice until the bill arrived and they tried to charge us $5 per head for corkage.

When I complained the manager was extremely rude, so we won't be going back

Fantastic fresh food, go for a banquet - great value for money and an excellent mixture of flavours

Elegant Twainese food. Too many choices? Got a group of 4 or more? Go for the pick-your-own combination of dishes banquet for your group... some interesting dishes... desserts include some asian-style offerings - go on be adventurous!
Grumpy Diner
Garry. A hidden gem. Worth the effort to find just to enjoy their ultra thin pancakes and unbelievable poached fish. No one else gets it so light and soft yet full of flavour.
Service is good. Prices reasonable.
This is going to be a regular dinner destination for me.

A Hidden Gem. Wonderful food, friendly, charming service in a relaxed, warm atmosphere. Some terrific taste sensations. Minor note of disappointment - every time we went there, they had some sort of excuse why they couldn't take my AMEX card; I finally complained to AMEX about this & next time we went, no problemo with AMEX - go figure!
