Review Four Ate Five - Sydney

Daniel Lu
I sat at the front bar table facing the street. It was pleasant watching the neighbourhood walking their dogs. The staff was uplifting. They generally had a smile and a positive personality. I had the eggs Benedict, it was nice. They put a light spice to give it a unique taste.

I was recommended shashuka as the weather was rather cold. I’d say it’s by far the best I ever eaten. The pita bread that goes with it was perfect. Cafe latte is good too. Love the overall lively vibes of this cafe.

• The location is really convenient because it's accessible by walking or tram. • Interior space seems not really large, but there are many tables to sit. • The service is efficient. • Price is reasonable. • Food is average with adequate servings.

This has been on my wishlist for years and finally ticked off today. The menu selection is quite standard but the food didn’t disappoint us. Had the Moroccan lamb with baked eggs ($21) and homemade roasted pitas. The pita was amazing so fragrant with great fluffy texture and the lamb stew was just perfect choice for a cold day. Leo Bagel ($17) with smoked salmon was classic and delicious too. The sour creme with dills combination just couldn’t go wrong! The filtered coffee was not beet impressed with the first few sips, but got better and better afterwards! Hot chocolate is just ok.

Always a fantastic experience at Four Ate Five. Great service, coffee and fresh, tasty food. Today I ordered the four Ate Five salad and it was great. Large portion, beautifully presented and felt really full after. Would highly recommend!

Nice small cafe, we came in with a team of 10 and they handled us very well. Food was top notch also…..I ordered lamb murgeuz with baked eggs. I was pretty jealous of my friends chicken sandwich though

10-15min wait for a table of 6 on Saturday 11.30. Menu looked unassuming but the food was delicious when it came out. Good flavours, generous amount of chorizo in my baked eggs special and the chai was nice and spicy. Had vegan options. Will visit again.

Consistently good, every time I visit Surry Hills. Fresh, delicious breakfasts. Great coffee. Fantastic, relaxed vibe. Good staff. Inside & outside setting.
Mike Stuart
Great food, great coffee. Im not often in the area but will remember this place for next time.

I can always count on the BEA roll or the Bircher muesli on your take away menu - great value for $10 and the best way to come off a long night shift!
Christopher Thomas Scott
Strong, black, terrific coffee and some of the best bread I've ever had. The host was a little too buttoned-up on this glorious Saturday morning. Have a cup! Relax!
Lisa Su
One of my all time favorites! Coffee, food, service all top notch!
Everlyn's IronChick
Delicious French toast + bacon! But a bit pricey though.
Phil Whitton
Great baked eggs and delicious coffee. Well worth the trip to town.

Me and my baddies had one of the best lunch we ever had in a cafe! stunning! i have to say coffee is avarage but food ans service are amazing.
James Grant
Absolutely beautiful light coffee that still had some punch! Highly recommended for anybody travelling around the sydney region! Service was also absolutely wonderful as well.
Natalie Manning
Hands down the best cafe in Sydney (and we have tried them all). Consistent, amazing quality meals, an eclectic mouthwatering menu and a team of staff who always go out of their way to make you feel welcome.

Disappointed with the service at Four Ate Five. Waited 20-30 minutes for a coffee outside in the cold. I ordered a small flat white but was charged $4.50 which is the price of a large. When I told the waitress she overcharged me, she proceeded to tell me that because I used my card to pay, there was a 50c surcharge. Even if there was, where did the other 20c disappear to? I decided to leave as I was waiting far too long and had my dog outside with me. After I told the waitress I wanted my coffee to go, another barista came out with my original order. I asked him to put it in a takeaway cup instead and when he came back with it, I was given a cup half full of luke warm coffee. This was not an enjoyable experience at all and I feel robbed of my morning coffee... I don't usually write reviews (especially negative ones), but this wasn't acceptable. Unfortunately, I won't be back.

Fantastic food, fantastic coffee and a great vibe

Fantastic breakfast, great relaxing atmosphere and excellent service - a MUST DO for anyone ever spending time in Sydney

Had a lovely brekkie with great service. My daughter left her sunglasses in the cafe and these guys went the extra mile and returned them to me in Canberra. Much appreciated.

Perfect Sunday breakfast, good size meal, v flavoursome and quick service 👌🏽 will be back!

Great coffee, great food and great service!
The Benedict was 10/10 for us (although one of my friends found it a bit acidic). The shakshuka flavour was 👌 but was vegetarian and didn’t have optional chorizo selection on the side even.... which is a bit strange. Bircher muesli was fresh and tasty too.
Only downside is the price for the portion.... quite expensive for what you get to be honest, both for food and for coffee 🤔
But tasty enough that I’d go back again ✌️

485 Breakfast Plate : 😍 Amazing
Lamb Baked Eggs : 😍 Amazing
Fruit Juice : 😍 Amazing
Snickers Milkshake : 😍 Amazing

We’ve been wanting to come here for so long. We finally made it and it was not a disappointment. Loved the lamb baked eggs with the crispy bread on the side. The fruit juice (we go apple, orange and ginger) was super refreshing and the snickers milkshake was so worth every calorie. Dishes were fulfilling and the prices were not bad. Service was also great. Highly recommended.
Susan
Service was friendly and prompt. The food was delicious. The lamb baked eggs was very fulfilling and had heaps of flavour. The Brekkie Board was also delicious, the hummus was fragrant and well spiced. I also loved the falafel, it was dense yet moist and full of flavour. Would love to come back and try the other foods along with their coffee.

A nice little place for brunch. I really enjoyed the frenchie, it was excellent - a flavourful dish 😍 I tried some of the fries and loved them, it was covered in so many spices which was tasty. Friendly service and generous portions. It was quite busy when we got there but we were lucky a table was made available for our party of 6.

🍞FRENCH TOAST + bacon ($22) filled with chocolate & banana, topped with marscapone, rhubarb, dulce de leche, nut crumble and maple.

🍔BEEF BURGER ($21) wagyu beef, cheese, onion, bacon, mustard, beetroot relish, aioli, pickles & chips

👋Follow my foodie adventures on Instagram @hungriestsam

Simply amazing baked egg! Would come back again and again for it.

Felt the need to have porridge for a few last times before the warmer weather kicks in and muesli is my go to again! This one had a very different flavour than I’ve had before - I think it was the cherry compote! Cute little cafe in Surry hills for a nice meal to start off a big day!

Pictured is the Cardamom and Vanilla Rice Porridge (spiced cherry compote and toasted nut crumble) & Skim Latte

Coffee was awesome!
Had this pasty also, vegan cashew cheese cake.
Surprisingly I love this cheese cake.
This deadly combo cost me $10, but it was worth every penny.

I had the weekend special quinoa bowl and although it was quite naturally oily and looked a bit gooey, it tasted amazing!! will definitely be back to try other things on the menu.
EL
Really like this cafe. It gets pretty busy on the weekend so be prepared to wait for a little bit. Food is delicious and staff are friendly. Will be back!

Surry Hills is always a good place to find great breakfast or brunch. Service is good, great French toast with that amazing maple serup! Not a big place but really nice food and service

Probably the best cafe in Surry hills! Great buzzing location on crown st. I’ve been here numerous times & love it each visit.
First time we came there was a lengthy table wait on a Saturday brunch, but it was worth it. My friend got the weekend special dish & I got the lamb baked eggs with mint yoghurt, which was such a unique and amazing dish! I overheard the waiters chatting about how it’s exactly what to eat if you’re in a food coma which is so accurate lol
The servings are generous, flavours are complex & it’s just overall hearty filling super tasty real food. The coffee is also excellent, and was served super quickly. Very smooth and strong.
I usually stop by before going to the library from a cappuccino here because it’s so great.
It has the quintessential Surry hills vibe; very aesthetic, trendy, minimalistic, & full of interesting quirky folks.
One of the occasions I went though, there was an extremely rude & snarky blonde male waiter who had some serious passive aggressive issues & clearly thought he was in some kind of reality show. I haven’t seen him since though so hopefully he’s been let go. Made the experience unpleasant

Overall awesome place & amazing value for money
Kravengerfoodie
Tried this place with the MR when he’s in town and it’s so good. I enjoyed my shakshuka wasn’t in the pic but similar to the lamb pot. Taste is amazing with the half cooked egg so nice and filling. The pita bread is soft but a tad oily and that’s ok since it’s winter need that winter grease.

Service is amazing. Such friendly staffs and quick too. Super thumbs up. Gonna go back again for more. My winter warmers

Oh my god! Love the presentation of the food. One of the best presentations I have ever come across. I ordered a shakshuka which was mind blowing. My friends called for a beef shakshuka and chicken with veggies baked. The food was just delicious. The coffee was good too. In all a very good experience and definitely worth revisiting. I might not be able to visit again as I am moving to Canada soon but thanks guys for an amazing experience.
Ambience - 3/5
Food - 4/5
Value for Money - 4/5
Service - 4/5

I can’t recommend this place enough!!! One of the best cafes in Surry Hills. Always friendly and careful staff, best coffe, deliciousness of food is overloaded and fast service, no matter how busy they are. Trying to get there as often as we can xx
Melanie Ng
i got the french toast and my friend got the muesli, neither of us were particularly impressed, staff were friendly enough, lots of hipsters
Lee
The French toast is out of this world. If I could dream up a French toast, this would be it. Generous serving size and presented beautifully. Great coffee. Service could be a little friendlier but fine for the most part.
Foodie In Syd
To be honest, its one of worst breakfast we have ever had, the most expensive breakfast option - 485 breakfast, priced $20 only comes with all sorts of pickle, one boiled egg and a tiny small pretzel, other things are also really disappointing, its really a not very good start of the day with a bad breakfast, hopefully the some items of the menu can be reviewed by the owner and can be charged with its right value, we will still try to enjoy our day despite of this.

I've eaten at four ate five countless times over the years, and it's generally pretty good in terms of service and food. Last week and a few times recently I've noticed however that when they wipe the tables down in between new customers, they use a sopping wet rag that smells of mould. This is not only highly infective at cleaning tables, but also can further the spread of harmful pathogens and bacteria. The wet rag left a fungal smell that lingered in the area for a good 5 minutes. I'll definitely eat here again, I just suggest that they implement a new cleaning protocol.
Eatdrinkbe_merry
Wow, this place gets busy on a Sunday morning but it is well worth waiting for! Inside or out? Get amongst it with the enthusiastic diners inside even though it is 38 degrees and probably hotter in the kitchen. Service is good considering how busy they are! Great coffees to start. Fight the Power superfood smoothie with banana, cacao, soy milk, toasted almonds, dates and cardamon is thick and delicious too. Chose the breakfast bowl and the Mexican! (see photos) Both amazing choices and enough sustenance to see you through to late afternoon! Highly recommend!
@KeraBearEats
We came here at 7:30am on a Thursday to avoid the early morning rush.

Coffee on offer is Single O - Killer Bee blend. The barista was very friendly and talked us through the coffee options. I tried the Chilter, it was my first time having one (not made by myself), it was nice but I think the hot batch brew is much nicer. They also do a cold brew so I will try that next visit.

I am a big fan of Mediterranean and Middle Eastern food flavours like yoghurt, eggplant, and beetroot, so this menu is perfect if you like these sort of foods too.

We had the Sabish (the one that is pita filled), and the Beetroot and Yoghurt Puree with Poached Egg on toast - the latter was an absolute winner - WOW! It was like being dropped into a different world. For sure I could eat that every morning.

Recommendations: Beetroot and Yoghurt Puree with Poached Egg

$50 for two people. Worth it!

Terrible customer service. We arrived on a Sunday (11/6/17) around 11am knowing we'd have to wait for a table - totally fine/expected.
The experience went horribly south when the waiter at the door in charge of taking names was incredibly rude and barely acknowledged us. After 15 minutes of waiting, we had to approach her and when we tried to arrange a table for two, she gave us attitude and killed the entire experience!
We love the food but the customer service is HORRIBLE!
Erika
Absolutely terrible service by a waitress (short with black hair in a pony tail) this morning. My partner and I waited 20 minutes for a table outside with two seats. We were offered tables inside on two occasions which we politely declined as preferred to sit outside. Finally there was a vacant table with three seats available which we asked to be seated at yet the aforementioned waitress told us that a group of three would be seated there. Upon looking at the queue of people outside, there were no groups of three waiting - only couples. When the waitress came outside again we asked who the three people were as there were clearly no groups of three - she then proceeded to give us attitude, insisting that she was about to seat a group of three (again- there were only couples waiting to dine!!!) then went back inside.
We then spoke to another waitress and explained the situation - she was super friendly and apologized. However when the first waitress saw us talking to the other lady, she then came out and blatantly lied - saying that she did indeed offer us the outside table when she never did!!! Ugh! What's with the lying?!
Won't be returning here which is a shame as the food is delicious.

Judging by the crowds we encountered while eating there - there was a small queue out the front at peak lunch hour - Four ate five looks to be a firm and reliable favourite among locals and Sydney brunch-lovers. The vibe is cosy and friendly, and it's the perfect place to go if you're in the mood for a cafe that delivers wholesome, tasty food with a bit of a twist.

Saturday morning around 9am. Short wait for an internal table. This place is super busy. A few minutes later the Q is long. We had the salmon cream cheese bagel (shares of the 70s!) and fried eggs with this fab potato hash brown. Tell you what, this is the goto hash brown in sydney. With a slice of toast left over I asked for honey but got this amazing marmalade. Omg between the marmalade and the hashie I was so happy. Coffee decent.
Leon
I ordered the Mexican and it was disappointing. The beans were overcooked and mushy whereas the Mexican sauce seems to come from a bottle that is bought from Woolworths or Coles.
Hungrysydneysiders
Love the sandwiches here (lunch menu only), my favourites are the Reuben and the chicken sandwich with mango chutney. Coffee is reliably good here too.
Hello Miss May
It's always lunch time at Four Ate Five. We came in early but the staff did not mind when we order the most delicious sandwiches in Surry Hills at 10am.

You gotta try the Four Ate Five classics, Roast Beef and Chicken sandwich. The roast beef sandwich is layered with sweet onion relish, lettuce and tomato. The mustard and aioli sauce makes it a yummy sandwich.

I love the free range chicken sandwich. I eat it all the time. The combination of mayo and spring onion, layered with bacon, cheese and lettuce are perfection. The cranberry sauce that comes with, is just finger licking good!

Excellent coffee and homemade chai latte. A fave joint in my neighbourhood.

More on the blog of my foodie adventure,
hellomissmay.com

This place is consistently good, the service is always on point and super friendly. I think it's the best place on Crown St to get coffee and it's a nice to sit on the outdoor tables and people watch.
Suzy Of Sydney
My sister and I were delighted by our coffee and sweets here the other weekend. The coffee is excellent, and our choices of white chocolate/pear muffin and banana bread with dulce de leche certainly satisfied our sweet tooths. The staff were helpful, but a little unfriendly (probably the Saturday morning rush!) We will definitely be back to try the savoury food soon.
Sweetandyummie
Lovely cafe on crown street that has a very warm neighbourly vibe and is filled with locals. The menu is fresh with great presentation. Street parking is very easy in this area. You can sit inside or outdoors. I highly recommend the fouratefive salad and the French toast.

This place had been on my list to eat for over 3 years, and finally decided to come here for a long overdue catchy up!. 2xbaked eggs and 2xcapps. baked eggs: almonds, feta, moroccan tomato sauce, toast-$18. this yolk was good (the other a bit too cooked). I heard good things about the baked eggs here so was keen to try it, and my first and last baked eggs for Winter. The first bite was good, but after the second, I knew it was going to get even more salty. I think the feta was a nice addition to add some creaminess, luckily they did hold back since it would've gotten even more salty. Loved the almonds for a bit of crunch. One of the eggs were cooked well, and both eggs looked like it covered the whole dish, but I thought there was a bit too much tomato in proportion with the egg. There was a good amount of spice in the tomatoes, just too much salt, not enough acidity or something to break through all the salt. The bread was toasted nicely, but not enough bread to help balance out the sauce as well.

Four Ate Five is a very popular little cafe in Surry Hills, very busy, trendy and healthy. This is my current number one breakfast/brunch/lunch spot. Four Ate Five is my favourite for multiple reasons; first of all they make great coffee. Second of all, they make amazing smoothies and juices and they also sell Kambucha. The food is absolutely delicious! Roasted Toamt and Avo dish and also Baked Eggs are an absolite must try! Highly recommend. Full review on my blog

Not sure as to why this cafe is so talked about and loved - the food is generally expensive, basic and meanly proportioned. The coffee is good and the food is passable, however I'd skip this one and save your dollars.
Amanda Lydia
Great food and drinks. Would come back again. OK customer service. Good vibes. Minimalistic cafe.

This cafe is a definitely a high contender in comparison to the other cafes in Surry Hills. It's hipster, modern, cool, and leaves you wanting more.
Keiko
Had the Mexican with chorizo and French toast and both were delicious! 😌 the baked eggs looked delicious, will try it next time. I would definitely recommend this cafe for brunch 👍🏽
Scott Hayes
I get my coffee from these guys early in the morning most days and they are all so lovely and welcoming and each make an effort to remember my order, which says more than you think. Inspired by the specials on the board, we were dying to try the food, and, once we made an effort to dine in, were not disappointed. Overall, very flavoursome and friendly.
Foodnique
At the recommendation of my cousin, we tried this place out for a coffee and a bite to eat. A busy little inner city Sydney cafe. Bustling with locals and regulars.
The service is pretty good here.
The food and coffee quite decent too. Some nice food choices.
If this is in your neighbourhood them go check it out. Even though its over 1000kms out of my neighbourhood it was still worth the visit.
JMAC N CHEESE
The staff we're so kind to let us in on a rainy Sunday to escape the rain even when they were just about to close up. We ordered three of the sandwiches they have, and wow do they deliver. Such interesting combos of flavours and so perfectly portioned.
Would very much like to come back 🙌🏼

Decent place for brunch. Recommenced to go early esp on Saturday mornings. Ordered the signature 485 and it was really fresh and healthy, as well as the juices.

I loved this cafe! I am a local Sydney sider who just wants a pleasant experience, a good coffee & delicious food. Man, did this place deliver! I was instantly impressed with the friendly service & inner city decor. The flat white was made to perfection, and whilst I didn't love the earthy flavoured bean, I still enjoyed it! I ordered the heirloom tomato/avocado/goats cheese thing & my gosh it tasted great. Every element was perfect & even though this is a common Aussie dish, it was one of the best versions I've had. I was also surprised at how much I got on my plate. Usually you only get enough for one slice of bread, but I found I was packing on so much avocado and goats cheese onto every bite of toast.

Overall amazing experience & I can't wait to go back there again!!!
The RnB Diary
The name of the cafe refers to their street number, it took me a while to figure it out…haha. We requested a table outside on the pavement as the inside looked a bit dingy, but you had people stand right by and watch you eat. The best dish I had here was the tomato based Moroccan egg bake with chorizo; the smoked salmon bagel was not bad either. You definitely need to try the snickers milk shake, omg it tasted just like snickers. Waiting is almost inevitable but it's worth the wait!
Anmol Grewal
Came here for brunch one day to try out their baked eggs. We did have to wait about 10-15 minutes but it wasn't that awful of a wait, seemed to go really quick.
Food was decent, and coffee was good as well. The service was friendly, and really nothing to complain about. Definitely go and eat here! Mr Zonks
Tiffany
Had been eyeing this brunch spot for quite some time, but haven't had to chance to sit down and try it out due to the sheer popularity of this place. It is always brimming with people inside the cafe, as well as full house in the outdoor seating area.

Finally had a chance to try it out one day passing through Surry Hills and me wanting to have a lighter option, I went for the smoked salmon bagel with avocado, ricotta, lemon and capers. Bagel was toasted a little too much because it was a nightmare to cut through, felt like I was amputating a tree log.
The handcut rosemary topped chips were crunchy on the outside, whilst still hearty and soft on the inside. Delightful to eat with a bit of tomato sauce on the side.
Sharon
It was the best tasting bowl of salad I ever had so far. I love every ingredients on the plate, from the kale to the brown rice to the purple cabbage, everything was packed with flavours.

Saw people ordering the chips and I will definitely be back soon to try them : )

Good job guys!
Caitlin Mary
My only disappointment was that I found this place on my last day in Sydney. Went on a Melburnian recommendation and it was sensational. Very generous burger sizes packed with flavour. The sweet potato crisps are fantastic but too many makes you feel regretful. The cookies are a good take home treat too.
Monica
These guys have gone out of their way with customer service and the food was amazing. Easily best veggie burger I've ever had. Worth the wait!
Byjubee
We LOVED the baked eggs!! I also love how no matter how busy the cafe is (which is always!), we can always be so chilled :) coffee was amazing, and the staff were highly attentive and friendly. Precious one in surry hills :)

One of the first restaurants I visited in Surry Hills . Lovely suburb ! Lovely restaurant! Lovely service ! I liked the seating arrangement as well , most tables are joined together and gives you a feeling of one big group!😊
We had a sandwich , the toast was a bit too hard but the filling was dish ! Also had the Moroccan style eggs , they were the best I've ever had . Delicious with a good hit of spice . Had the chai latte as well , but it had too much cinnamon.

I will return ! Great experience !

Came here for brunch on a weekday. Surprisingly it was quite empty slightly after 1pm. Cozy little cafe. Good service, great food. Will be back!
Dan The Man
I can't wait to visit this cafe again and sample some of their other tasty treats. Here the food is the hero with numerous delicious sweet and savoury choices. They have some lovely gluten free options and my coffee was perfect. With so much competition on this street this cafe hits the mark!
A
Super chilled and trendy place. Had the French toast and an amazing soy latte. Other people in our group had the Bircher muesli and the Mexican- very tasty. Would definitely come back.
Ashley Xu
Walked pass this little cafe on the way to Messina. My friend told me the coffee here was very popular. So I stopped by and had a cold drip. Very refreshing, naturally pleasantly sweet, not overly bitter or sour, just the way I like it.
The staff was friendly.
Would like to go back to try the food.
Zaki P
I've been here a couple of times.. The food is decent. The kumera chips are AMAZING ! I saw someone else order them and had to try them.

I've had the signature salad and the pulled pork sandwich. Both were nice.

It gets quite busy, especially on weekends. The coffee is decent. Not burnt like most places.

Would recommend for brunch.

Brilliant food, friendly service, great juices and a local favorite in the sea of cafes in Surry hills 😊 "The 485" comes with Boiled eggs, hummous, marinated feta, pilpelchuma (chilli paste), red cabbage, Israeli pickles, radish, chopped salad and fresh bagel 😉
Proudly serving Single Origin coffee ☕
The service is a little slow - even at 7am on a weekday morning - but I think their wagyu burger is really awesome. Too crowded on the weekends but def worth it mid week for lunch or breakfast.
Baker Bowie
This place has strong brunch game. I love anywhere with an all day breakfast and the bircher museli with seasonal fruit did not disappoint. I particularly liked the creamy oats with crunchy nuts folded in. Hubs had the pulled pork burger as we were really having lunch rather than breakfast (oops!). The burger was succulent and saucy and the pickled carrots were on point.

Those chips though. Hand cut and delicious. Run, don't walk.
AzzA
Decided to stop here on a whim and glad we did. This little cafe has a very solid selection of food and drink, all reasonably priced and generous in size. I went for the pulled pork sandwich at $13 and thought it was probably the best I've ever had. We also ordered the hand cut chips that were very tasty. Service was friendly and the food came out promptly.
Four are Five was a great chance visit. We'll definitely be back again.
Clairaa
Came here for brunch on the weekend. Small cafe usually with a crowd waiting for a table outside. Food tastes as good as it looks, service is good and efficient. Tried the french toast and baked eggs, both really flavoursome and fresh. Wouldn't recommend coming in a party greater than 4 as they don't take bookings and could be a long wait for a table.
Samantha
Came at 11:30 and was lucky enough to grab an outdoor seat where it wasn't cramped and had a breeze after a 5-10 minute wait. The Wagyu Meatballs, 3 Cheese Melt and Rocket Sandwich was filling however hard to eat by hand. The bread at the bottom was soggy due to the the sauces however the bread on top was crispy and had melted cheese on it and drizzled in olive oil. The sandwich altogether wasn't great but was very filling. Personally didn't like the rocket in the sandwich or the olive oil.
Wendy Le
Nice decent food. Wagyu burger and chips were delicious. Nice and friendly staff. The restaurant itself is cute and has a really nice setting!
Andrew Lovelaguna Chan
Wad there for brunch today. Ambience wise, the music was a tad too loud for conversations. Service on the other hand is great.

I had the Eggs Benny with ham on Croissant. I thought the combination of Benny and crossaint does not work. It gets a tad too rich from the hollandaise and also the butter filled Croissants. The sweetness from the crossaint throws the balance of the dish too. The poached eggs were perfectly cooked though. Would I come back? Maybe not in the near future.
Richard Conway
Four ate five is great; not just because of its punny name. The coffee and brekky / brunch food is up there with as good as it gets in Surry Hills, which is why you'll often be lining up. They often have a special available - salmon benedict on a croissant. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. Other menu items are a little hipster, but great. Coffee is good and the staff are also friendly and efficient. I've been told the lunch menu is also good, however I haven't had the chance to try it for myself just yet. Definitely worth a try.
Pop Culture Food
One awesome thing: PORTION SIZE!
This café may be located in Surry Hills, but that doesn't mean portion size is skimped on in exchange for exuberant prices.

I ordered the smoked salmon toast at the time and there were generous servings of rocket, avocado AND smoked salmon. It was served on top of two large pieces of sourdough that appeared slightly drizzled with olive oil.

Great value for the money! I now see that this item is titled as "smoked salmon bagel", so I'm not sure if this has meant the portion size has shrunk since then...Anyone care to find out and report back? No? Then I might just have to return :) (not complaining)

A wonderful brunch option for those in the city. Get there relatively early as it is a small space so there is sure to be a waiting list in the works.
Sarah D
Conventional food (just as I like it) and very very well done. Cosy cafe and friendly staff it is a great place to catch up with friends or just enjoy coffee on your own.

In May 2010, I wrote that this was my new favourite cafe. I hunted it down after reading the Time Out review, and it's got a great Surry Hills ambience, buzzy, cool, fun, a big table at the back, an open kitchen, bright and airy, and a few outdoors tables. It's almost comical to compare it to some other not-busy cafes very close by, they've obviously got the magic people want.

The coffee is superb, and what I've tried on the menu is good too, the homemade chicken or lentil pies are fantastic, the beetroot salad was excellent one time, just ok the second, the sandwiches get rave reviews but I'm cutting down on my carbs at the moment! This place is often busy, with a line-up, but that's part of the charm, to be at one of the city's coolest cafes.

(Feb 2011) Dropped by again, my pulled pork salad was dripping in dressing, and just wasn't that great. Good coffee though, still a good place, but I'd pulling down the near perfect rating from last year to Very Good.

2015: This place is still so busy you can hardly ever get in. They must still be doing something right...

Came here on a busy Saturday morning, and after a small wait we had a fantastic time. Service was good despite how busy the cafe was. Coffee was good, and the smoked salmon bagel was the pick of the menu.

Bake your morning with a warm and hearty breakfast at one of the original delicious brunch cafes in brunch central (Surry Hills). Whisk your appetite with their amazing Moroccan baked eggs so full of flavour and creaminess- they are heavenly! Poach with a large breakfast plate with all the classics including crunchy bacon, cream corn, eggs, salmon and a side of soft sourdough.

Great place. Simple adore the simple breakfast with a great taste and it really satisfies my cravings!

Disappointing. We had breakfast here in January and loved it so we returned upon our current visit to Sydney (May, 2015). Baked eggs undercooked and relatively flavourless. Kale, chorizo and fried eggs also disappointing. The eggs were undercooked, chorizo of poor quality and most likely boiled (?). The food was so bad in comparison to meals in January that we assume the place has changed owners/management. We left dissatisfied, plates barely touched and found brunch elsewhere.

Food is delicious and the service was really warm and friendly! This place is always busy but the staff always provide such good service! French toast is the best I've ever had and I'm a little french toast slut... I've had a few ;)

Hat off to the chefs!

I've been to Fouratefive twice now for breakfast and I love it! Both times I have ordered the Moroccan Baked Eggs because they are just delicious! my partner has the French toast and that was amazing also. Staff are friendly and efficient and coffee is great.
Cheeseandwine
A true hipster joint but the staff are friendly. They serve really tasty sandwiches and great coffee.

It was a lovely October day when three decided to overeat at Four.Ate.Five, an unassuming little cafe tucked in the heart of Surry Hills. Armed with glinting forks and eyes bigger than our stomachs (but isn’t this always the case), we basked in the warm weather, pre-heating our bellies with sun and laughter. From the beginning, the staff members were extremely accommodating. Although we were initially seated at a table in the corner, as soon as a table next to the window was available they offered to move us to better lighting.

Coffee always on the cards, we ordered our fix...the extensive menu, we ordered the five seed quinoa muesli with fresh fruit & yoghurt (woah!) & the salmon stack with poached eggs. The menu definitely makes it hard to choose from, but i’ve found no matter how many times i’ve been here and whatever my choice i’m all smiles...

Let's jump straight into it. I ordered the mushroom baked eggs. I did not enjoy the dish as much as I expected...I found the dish quite heavy for an afternoon meal, despite the assorted mushrooms being very enjoyable. I personally prefer Alexandria's baked eggs, which had a rich tomato sauce and offered different flavour hits.
Brunch On Joy
Trade the good old english muffin for a croissant and you have the delicious Four ate Five eggs benedict special. Extra butter and pastry - how can you go wrong? Served all day, miss the brunch rush for a shorter wait in the queue.

Spice up your morning with some Moroccan Baked Eggs with Almonds, Labne and Organic Sourdough.

I had previously done research on Four Ate Five and it seemed that there was much fanfare about the creamed corn however I decided to save it for next time as I wasn’t really in a corny mood (hahaha). As you can see as well, the menu is pretty small after you take away the healthy options (muesli), the tiny and inadequate options (toast), and the generic options (blt, sandwich). In the end I decided on the Mexican Breakfast with fried eggs and bacon.

Hi foodie friends! It's been a looonnng time since my last post (mostly due to uni stresses) but nothing's better than some good food to remind me of the good things in life! Eggs has been my favourite breakfast food for as long as I can remember and FourAteFive really impressed me with their eggs! Situated in the heart of brunch paradise (Surry Hills) it's one of the most relaxed and I had a really great experience there! ♥ As always food first! Smoked Salmon Stack! So my friend and I visited on a quite sunny Friday morning for some brunch and I ordered the Smoked Salmon Stack ($18) which had salmon, avocado and ricotta on sourdough topped w/ poached eggs & parsley. A wonderful combination of all the foods that make me happy! The combination of salmon and avocado is always a winner and of course the egg was poached to perfection! Baked Eggs This was the Moroccan style Baked Eggs ($17) with almonds, organic fetta & sourdough toast! A wonderful combination of spices with baked

Solid second choice cafe, limited seating and slightly out of the way if you do not live in the neighbourhood it's not worth the detour. The dishes are classic but executed well.

Baked eggs were high on the list of things recommended to me, and I can see why! I got the Moroccan style baked eggs with almonds and organic fetta, and man oh man...
A Food Fable
This place is so busy, there’s like 5-6 waiters/baristas plus 5 people in the kitchen! The decor isn’t super fancy, like some of the cafes which are sprouting up in Surry Hills – there’s a few robots stuck on the wall (similar to Robocog?), plus artworks and pictures of animals. It seems a bit understated, but still super popular – so it must be the food! :)
Just Food No Words
‘485’ -> ‘Four Ate Five’ is an ingenious play on words but who knew it was also the influence of their address on 485 Crown Street in Surry Hills?! I thought they were simply being punny but that NextLevel-ness :O So much :O Don’t mind me, I’m easily amused… We spent about 20-30 minutes waiting outside before we were seated on a large communal table at the back. It was right next to the kitchen so we saw all the food coming out and there were even magazines stacked in the centre of the table for customers to flip through.

The banana loaf was really soft and tasted great with the cinnamon butter. It was really tasty. The highlight was probably the baked eggs. It was nice and creamy. However, Linda found it oily and salty towards the end because she ate all the bread. I only had a bit so it wasn’t too bad for me. I personally don’t like creamy things though. I never get creamy pasta but I didn’t find this too bad.

When I first heard about this cafe, I remember thinking to myself....why did four eat five?? (LOL...true story!) And then I realised that it was actually a really playful pun on the street number of the cafe itself....you guessed it - 485. This cute little cafe renowned for its all day breakfast is located on 485 Crown Street, Surry Hills . In terms of where along Crown St it is located, it's in a little strip of cafes between Devonshire St and Jessop St. There is 2 hours free parking from 8am - 6pm Monday to Fridays on Crown St itself so if you go during the weekdays it's usually not too hard to for find parking....although it can be a different story during the weekend! I arrived at the cafe around 12pm on a Friday and it was actually quite packed so I ended up grabbing the last available table (yay!). The cafe is small and cosy, with about 30 seats indoors (including a large communal table) and about 8-10 seats outside at the front of the cafe. I found it quite unique how they had

The cunningly named Four Ate Five (its address is 485 Crown St!) is no stranger to the brunch scene. For years I have seen queues upon queues of people outside this small establishment. There must be some reason for all the buzz, right? It was a beautiful and warm Saturday morning and all were out to play. There were mums with kids, friends and couples, and dogs. Lots and lots of dogs(!!!). The parade of dogs made time pass much quicker during our 15 or so minute wait for a table. Over the years, Four Ate Five have seem to have perfected their baked eggs recipe. Perhaps they're one of the few places that served baked eggs before it became a "thing"?
Take And Eat
Located on 485 Crown St among other great cafes sits Fouratefive, a small homely cafe. Fouratefive is one of the cafes I would keep going back to if I couldn't decide where to eat because I know I'll get value for money and the most importantly, delicious and filling food. Fouratefive was buzzing with people, as usual, but we were lucky to get a table for two as soo n as we arrived. The waiters are extremely energetic and friendly, and for me good service is always a big plus! :) As per usual, the food definitely satisfied my hunger! We ordered two dishes to share; Baked eggs and pulled pork sandwich on sourdough. The pulled pork was a little bit spicy but nonetheless anything pork is good :) The food took awhile to come (maybe because of the baked eggs) but it didn't bother me since I was too busy

Fish burger, $19. The fish wasn’t grilled long enough so it still had a lot of ‘fish juice’, add some sauce onto it, throw it on a (hot) toasted bun and you’ve got yourself a soggy mess. It had great potential, but sadly it wasn’t able to satisfy my burger needs. I loved the chips though, actual hand cut potato pieces with the skin still intact. Deep friend goodness seasoned with sea salt and rosemary, they weren’t crispy but the potatoes were nice & firm and not mushy. Snickers shake, $6. Ice cream, milk, chocolate, caramel and peanuts all thrown together to make a sugar packed thickshake. At the time i absolutely loved this!! it was so so sweet & amazing but my body was not ready. Too much sugar/ice cream in this and it left me feeling bloated and super sluggish after the sugar spike ended. I regret nothing though and would definitely order this again hah.. Four Ate Five has decent service and the staff are alright but the background music was extremely annoying. We sat inside toward

The highlight was definitely the kumera chips! While we were waiting we saw a table order both the kumera chips and the hand cut chips with sea salt and rosemary and boy did they smell gooood! We wanted to order both but we knew we couldn't finish it so we went for the kumera chips. And we definitely went for the right one cause they were so good! Thinly sliced crunchy kumera chips with aioli... it was delicious!!

Order my ultimate breakfast when you're there because its done to perfection. That is, haloumi (Cue symphony of groans. I know, I know, I don't SHUT UP about this squeaky cheese), sautéed mushrooms and poached eggs on wholemeal sourdough washed down with a cappuccino ;) PLEASE SEE TO YOUR RIGHT. I feel like it's very difficile to maintain quality across all breakfast components but Fouratefive seem to master it somehow. Have a squidgeredoo (look) at the full menu HERE but just so you're aware, the toasted sandwich and the mexican breakfast are also extremely tasty ;)
The Chefs Wife
Another good spot for breakfast was “Fouratefive”. We sat under the trees on the Crown Street pavement, where we watched busy Sydney-siders trot by. I had a very fresh and tasty Bircher musili there.
VegeTARAian Sydney
We shared ‘The Chronic’ superfood smoothie – a healthy drink of kale, spirulina, hemp seeds, banana, coconut water, mint, apple juice and lemon. While it was really good and I was grateful that it was chilled (unlike most fresh juice or smoothies you come across when dining out) I thought it was a tad steep at $10.
Fight The Craving
Another Surry Hills café with a great range of dishes. The staff were friendly and lets not forget, it definitely ticks the hipster requirement. It was nice and I’d probably come back, but given the ridiculous wide range of places to eat along Crown St, it’s not going to be an easy decision.
Anna Chan
The staff are friendly, the portions are definitely much larger than what I had imagined them to be (hopefully the walk down to George Street Cinemas helped me burn some kilojoules) and I would definitely like to come back to try their smoked salmon stack or pulled pork salad. Oh, and you have try the kumera chips if you come here!
Next Stop: Food
I think this is the best hollandaise I've ever tasted, I LOVE the tanginess of the sauce. The portion of egg, salmon and croissant was perfect , you know how sometimes before you finish the bread, all the eggs/salmon is all gone and you're left with just bread ? This is NOT the case in Four Ate Five!
I'm Still Hungry
What a sweet "coincidence" that this Surry Hills café’s address is actually 485 crown street. Five will never be the same after four takes a bite out of it.

There’s always a queue outside the place – they’re really known for their coffee, and to a lesser extent, their food as well. Many months ago in 2012, a friend and I intended to go there but we couldn’t because the queue was just too long. Finally, I got my chance.

The only saving grace this time was the broccoli soup with goat cheese, which was absolutely superb.

Choose between the vegetarian option of fried eggs or the vegan option of crispy tofu. A mound of tomato paste and chopped tomatoes mixture , placed atop the toast had made it soggy but the eggs were fried perfectly sunny side up with the yolk still delightfully runny. Eggs + paprika = winning. The Mexican bean mix was flavorsome and so was the Spanish onion salsa and rocket and the avocado wasn’t fussed with and was simply sliced.

So, would I go back to Four Ate Five? I think so! The service was very good and there are still a lot of menu options I would like to try, such as the pulled pork sandwich and the cheese and meatball melt! You can check out their menu here (although I think some of the prices have changed slightly!) I’ll probably end up going there for brunch with my friends, or just by myself to study French or something :)

So I took a two week break from brunching (not a voluntary decision mind you) and let me tell you...it was horrible. I missed my weekly dose of eggs and coffee terribly, and vowed to never sway from brunching ever again. Four Ate Five was a delightful discovery upon M and I's lucky fortune in securing a parking spot on Crown Street. Seriously, that never happens. Despite the 20 minute (painfullly hungry) wait, we left feeling very satisfied. I love cafes that offer specials in addition to their regular menu - it means that there is always a surprise, usually a good one. I was off to a good start with my much needed dose of caffeine - the Skim Cappucino ($3.80) was beautifully frothy but slightly too bitter. M ordered a Strawberry Milkshake ($7) because he had "seen someone drinking it" however 5 minutes later we realised that there was no such order on the menu. Now we were really intrigued as to why they didn't stop our order and anticipated what was to come. The result? A sublime

Yummy sandwiches, great service, with those kumera chips being the highlight of my day. I sooo wanna know how to make them at home!

A big breakfast with a twist. The onion salsa and tomato, mixed with the rocket leaves created an explosion of flavors in my mouth. The tangy flavors balanced well with a serve of beans mix (kidney beans and white beans), together with crispy tofu bits. It was a very satisfying breakfast.
Missklicious
This was perfect for the cold and rainy morning, so hearty and delicious. The eggs were just right, with the yolks oozing out. A very generous serving and I struggled to finish it.

I think one of the things i love most about Australia is that water is always offered FOC! #elcheapo (Though i think that's not always the case, i think Rockpool charged me and Jon BY THE HOUR for water once, though i may be wrong!) I also remember La Bodega in Bangsar once served me an Rm 13 bottle of water (For one fml) and i refused to go to the toilet for the longest time to make the most of the Rm 13! *sweatdrop* #badwaterexperience I love having a breakfast affair but i always struggle to get up in time for it (I swear most Aussies sleep at 9pm and are up by 7am so i can never quite compete with them!) so lucky us, Fouratefive in Surry Hills serves breakfast till pretty late! :) (FYI, it took me half of breakfast to figure out that Fouratefive actually stands for the number of the shop, #485! :P) Jon's cappuccino. (I don't know why i can't spell cappuccino for the life of me, thank God for spell checker! T_T) I prefer my chai latte non-complicated, thank you very much. Jon with h
Excuse Me Waiter
I enjoyed our visit to fouratefive thanks to the laidback atmosphere of the place, which was perfect for a lazy Saturday arvo. We left feeling quite satisfied, planning to return another time to try other things off their menu like their intriguing French Toast with mascarpone and rhubarb.
Constant Diner
We weren't impressed with this bowl of kumera chips. It was very oily and not at all crunchy. Turns out the chef wasn't happy with this either so he sent a fresh bowl of chips to replace this one. Nice to see there's quality control in the kitchen.

Another striking element is the beard quota. I don't think I have seen so many beards in the one place since arriving in Sydney! Based on Time Out's review I'd decided in advance that I was going to order the pulled pork sandwich. Do you see that little piece of pork that had tumbled out of the sandwich in the bottom right of the photo? I couldn't resist tasting it first and I was actually disappointed. It tasted dry and I thought I could be forcing my way through very dull sandwich. However, once I took a bit

Bottom line: Wasn't impressed, but maybe I need to give it another try? People love this place, but either I ordered the wrong thing or everyone is a liar. There is always a crowd of people surrounding this place on Crown street awaiting a table. Be came in for lunch a little later in the day so we luckily didn't have to wait for a table. The staff is super friendly and lovely, but I was not all the impressed with my meal. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich. I don't like mayonnaise (I know...I know - I'm nuts), but I forgot to order it without mayo so I ate around the mayo smothered side of the bread. I guess my idea of a pulled pork sandwich is shredded pork, smothered in BBQ sauce, maybe some caramelized onions in there, all atop a delicious soft bun. This was not that. It was shredded pork, with lettuce and tomato. And it was dry. Really dry. I suppose they serve it with mayo to mask the dryness... McKay had the steak sandwich, which he liked just fine. I didn't try it because, of c

I'm all for your eggs benny and standard big breakfast menu selection but if you are after something hearty, reasonably priced and without snotty cafe pretentiousness - pay Four ate Five a visit.

Four Ate Five does great coffee that's for sure, but we found the breakfast were just ordinary.

I purposefully jumped out of bed last Saturday with one thing on my mind (not what you may think!) to get a table at Four Ate Five in Sydney's breakfast capital, Surry Hills. You may laugh but this is the latest and greatest cafe in town: see Time Out Syd

Was it worth the wait? The food was delicious and we managed to sit, chat and eat for a good hour or so, but I’m not sure I would want to wait an hour for food there. Best solution is to come very early, or later in the day to avoid the crowds and get your food at the same time!

Good chips!. I went there the other day and I ordered a hamburger with chips, the highlight were the chips!
they were so yummy ;) the burger was good too.

The SERVICE: not so good... they need to have better waiters.
I ordered a coffee and it took ages..... ages!

I don't think I will be back there. BUT if YOU do, get the hamburger ;)

Appalling service and ignored. Went there for coffee this moring. After 10 minutes I had to ask for a menu ftom a waiter. 10 minutes later I had not been approached for all. I decided to leave and tell the female wait staff that I had been sitting at a table for 20 mins and ignored. She looked at me blankly no apology . Obviously the young self obsessed staff feel this job is below them and expect a tip . Here is my tip. Your a waiter. It's not rocket science Learn how to wait on people

Great beef burger!. Came here for lunch and had the beef burger with gherkins, which was delicious. The chips were great too. The staff were friendly and the service was fast. The chronic drink, was a specialty, was wonderful, yet healthy at the same time. The place is always packed and has a good vibe. I highly recommend this place to all.

Fouratefive and their sweet potato chips. Fouratefive doesn't do potato chips the conventional way and these thinly sliced chips are absolutely heavenly with the aioli! To read more, please check out:

http://thegirlswhoatetheworld.com/post/104566995607/four-ate-five

The Envy of the Onlookers. The small cafe was almost-but-not-quite full, although by no means crowded when I arrived to it at around 10 am on a weekday, so I was comfortably able to score a table to myself as I pondered the menu while the staff gave me water. Choosing the french toast ($16) I was surprised to behold its beauty when it was served- it looked too good to be true! I asked them to hold the rhubarb, but enjoyed pasting the banana-stuffed soft bread with the mascarpone and covering it with authentic maple. The bread was of itself not overly sweet, and I appreciated that with all the other components of the dish served on the side, a diner could personalise this dish to suit their tastes: sensitive to sweetness? add less maple. Want a stronger flavour? use your mascarpone! I, of course, used the lot and enjoyed this dish immensely. One minor improvement could be an increase in marscapone offered as I would have enjoyed being able to apply it more thickly to the bread. The stuffing of bananas was a flavour-punch which elevated this dish to new and unique heights. Although it is a sizeable dish, I did not leave the cafe feeling bloated or unable to walk but rather felt very very satisfied.

The staff were very polite and allowed me to read my book while I dined in peace!

Will definitely return. Soon.

Food average for Surry Hills. Coffee needed an extra shot. Took 40 minutes for eggs to come out.

Found this place when strolling around the area on a Saturday afternoon. The long queue simply caught our attention so we decided to give it a try. It was definitely worth the wait. The warm pulled pork salad was the best and the taste still lingers in my mouth. We also enjoyed their kumara chips and aioli. Service was very good and friendly too, although there were times when its quite hard to get their attention as they were happily chatting away. But no biggie given all the other things they've got right!!

The menu is not very exciting. Scrambled eggs was mediocre, but the potato fennel hash was really good.

Great place!. Had an awesome breakfast this morning. Place is pretty biusy on Saturday morning. Was waiting for 10- 15 min but it was worth of! Service was fast but the food more than delicious ! Can't remember when recently I had such a good breakfast. Coffee was ok !

Simply great. Went there for Sunday lunch, it was super crowd and there was a line, no table for even 1 person. Though they are super busy, still bringing good service to everyone. Ordered a pork sandwich, forgot what exactly it has inside though, it was awesome, after my first bite, just couldnt stop for a photo of it and finished it all straight away. However, the coffee was a bit of let down, as I saw the barista let the shot of coffee sat there for a long while before pouring milk into it. (Though Im no expect to coffees, at least I know it will develop a sour taste if it sits for a while) Maybe because of that, it tastes a bit sour on my first sip.

Btw, i would suggest people try their juices, seems they are great as i sat next to their 'juice making department'. It was a great lunch and dun afraid to get in line, totally worth it.

Perpetually busy area. Between this place and nearby Mad Spuds Cafe, there is always a crush of people here at the usual eating times. For a change, got here just after opening at 8am so only two tables occupied. Had the mexican breakfast which had a great bean mix and paprika on the eggs (not the spicy level paprika). Tasted great and served quickly - glad I got in and out before the hordes streamed in.

I had their daily special pancakes with apple crumbs and pear and it is so good. Love the coffee here too! This place is always crowded so be there early!

Great Brunch - but be early!. Always difficult to get a seat at FourAteFive, but when you do, the food is worth it.
The Homemade Creamed Corn breakfast was delicious.
Also try their fresh juices - order the watermelon, pear and mint juice, then watch it seperate colours and layers.

Excellent little cafe. I was recommended this place by a friend and it was an exceptional visit, excellent coffee, excellent service ad fantastic food.
I had the Mexican brekkie which was recommended by the waitress and it was delicious.
The waitress was particularly good, offering specials as soon as I sat down and had my coffee.
Worth a visit.

Don't bother, this place is not worth the line up outside. It took a full hour between arriving and receiving any food. Awful burger which came on sourdough with the worst chips in history. They were soggy and floppy and very oily. Not good value either.
Superalice
Excellent busy hipster cafe. We got here slightly after 12pm on a Saturday and only waited a short 1 or 2min. Line grew much longer after that. Very hipster cafe with good service. Space is tight but that's part of the charm. My friend who had coffee said it was good and strong, better than The Book Kitchen and Reuben Hills which we went to after. Banana smoothie ($7.50) is large and topped with cinnamon, I normally don't like cinnamon but I think it went well with the drink. French toast stuffed with banana is a yum sweet brekkie choice. Homemade creamed corn with poached eggs is also unique, the creamed corn is pretty good.

Went with a regular, so missed the queues and had awesome service and food. Noisy and quirky, great atmosphere. Have heard from others of the opposite experience, Jen to return without the "regular" friend in tow.

Overrated. Waited over half an hour for a table on a Saturday morning. Service was acceptable but the food was bland and the coffee was just plain bad, definitely overhyped and not worth the visit.

Eager to visit again. Popped in here with one of my best friends last Saturday just before Christmas and had a wonderful time. I had the scrambled eggs with a side of mushrooms and a piccolo latte and my friend had mint tea (made freshly) and the bircher muesli with fruit. The muesli was just the right balance of crunchy and sweet and and my eggs were terrific, not to mention the perfectly cooked mushrooms. Finding the latter is surprisingly difficult! The coffee was the only low point, not great, sadly. But the service was consistently friendly across the three (wonderfully well dressed) servers, which is a pleasant surprise in an area where the service can be consistently terrible.

My only complaint is that this cafe and several others in the vicinity are all on top of each other, so having a private conversation is tricky. Maybe not a good spot for a D&M, but this is hardly the fault of the cafe staff and owners, it just comes with the territory.

I would be very happy to go here again. Surry Hills is growing on me, thanks to dining experiences like this one.

What an awesome start to the day. The piccolo latte was strong and smooth . It was made with the help of their naked group head extractor and barista , who took love and care to make sure It was perfect. Their famous Moroccan baked eggs were satisfying and generous and their house made preserved jam was more Ish. Well done guys . You've definitely lived up to all the hype .

Great. I've actually been here for a few times and really enjoyed the coffee they made. The service was also pretty good. I had lunch with my friend one Sunday when the place was just full of people. Food and coffee weren't served quick. However the waiter was very friendly to have refilled the water whenever its empty. Had their "today's special" pancakes twice and impressed both times.
Pulled-pork sandwich was ok. But will definitely come back to try the moroccan dish. Coffee there is lovely (always)! And is definitely their forte

Good food + friendly staff. The hand-cut fries was alright, not as crispy as what we expected. Homemade creamed corn was good! We changed the poached eggs to scrambled egg which tasted nice. The service was great; a staff mixed up our order so we waited for a while. The manager then came to apologize and didn't count the money for our drink and fries in the bill

Funky cafe in Surry HIlls. At first we couldn't find Fouratefive but we eventually did. I like how the kitchen was completely open at the back of the restaurant. Anyway, my boyfriend and I came for breakfast. I had the baked eggs and my boyfriend had the french toast. Both were so delicious. We also had a chat to the staff for a while, recommending us places to visit since we are from Perth. We enjoyed our time here at Fouratefive.

Unimpressed.. I dropped in yesterday for lunch. This was my first time to eat here as I'd heard good things, however I left with an empty stomach after sitting for over 10 minutes without even being asked if I'd like a coffee. The couple next to me arrived at the same time and got their order taken quick smart. I was actually blanked twice by the wait staff, to the point where it was almost funny (had I not been so hungry). I got up and walked out, and enjoyed friendly, fast service a couple of doors down. Don't believe the hype.

Coffee. Met a college here early one morning, friendly service and good food, I like the high position and mixed interior, kind of reminds me of my life really.

Will take a date there sometime

Two thumbs up

Eh.... Don't understand why people love this place so much...
the staff is pretty rude, and the food is really average. It seems like unless you know them personally, you'll get terrible service.
couldve been much more.

It's worth the wait. Coffee is great and the good is fresh and vtasty.

People watch from the window; sip lovingly crafted coffee and munch perfect poached eggs. Staff are attentive and down to earth. It may not be far from Bondi, but it's worth it even in traffic.

Very nice breakfasts and pastries. The staff are very attentive and nice. It's very noisy, so don't go for a quiet morning. Coffee was good. Lovely fresh juices and smoothies. They take risks with the food combos and it works well

Overrated. What is it about lining up and having to wait for food that's tasty but average? trying everything on crown. recommend it? nahh

Omg! The best Caesar salad I have ever eaten - not at all heavy or creamy, but light and zippy with the deal maker... White anchovies! Staff are all super nice and friendly and the whole atmosphere is just great. A winner!

Love Pork, Egg & Coffee. Just had brunch here with my friends last Saturday.
We ordered Pork Sandwich, Baked Eggs and Mocha.
The Mocha was lovely and I must say the best Mocha I ever had so far. The Pork Sandwich was yumm and the Baked Egg (although had too much tomatoes in it) completemented the whole thing that afternoon. Next on my wish list is the mustard beef burger. Brunch anyone?

I first went to fouratefive the weekend it opened, and was pleased with it's coffee, decor and food. Have been heading back regularly since then and found that due to the hype the press has given it, it's way too popular and busy for what it's worth. In particular, there's one waitress who gets crankier and ruder as the months pass. If you're planning on going, I'd recommend the weekdays. Redeeming factors? The Adriano Zumbo cakes and takeaway sandwiches.

It's actually average. It looks like this is one of the "places of the moment" in Crown street.
I think the success of this easy going cafe' relay on the fact that it's a pleasant alternative to the otherwise more sophisticated places that are all around in Crown Street and in fact the typical customer seams to be a very young person.

I actually like the place and the easy going atmosphere but I don't think is anything exceptional, it's for sure good but not incredible.

The only bad note I have about it is the volume of the music: quite too high, especially for a cafe'.
Just today I was at the Fouratefive and I had trouble to speak with my friends, because of the music and the waitress didn't get one of our order quite right. My friend asked for a pancakes and she understood baked eggs. For sure our Italian accent didn't help but if the music volume was at a normal level we could have more chance to get the order right ;)
The staff was nice though, so we couldn't really complain.

I would give it a 7 out of 10.

Let down by staff attitude. Menu looked good with many enticing options. Order took a long time to process, considering it was not busy.

Food was great, we both thought our meals where fine..

Everything was fine until we went to pay inside and I asked the waitress to read back our order, $45 for 2 x coffee and 2 x lunch , she did so and then shook her head at me??????!!!!!!!! What the????

Not sure why I got a rude response to a simple question....

What do they say " 1st impressions last""

Worth the wait!. Head there early or eat there late and avoid peak times. Otherwise be prepared to wait. The food is well-thought out with small details such as rosemary in the chips or bircher with stewed and fresh fruit. The ingredients are fresh and seasonal. The coffee is sublime and the atmosphere is casual and laid-back Surry Hills. You get all of this for less than $15 a main for brekky and lunch. The attraction is reasonable prices for great food. I might add that the attraction in the window is A Zumbo's delicious brownies and pastries too!
