Review The Gantry Restaurant - Sydney

Caronne Carruthers-Taylor
This new restaurant, opened only 2-3 months ago, is highly recommended. The menu was well considered and matching wines were delicious. We were seated outside and loved the atmosphere. Each course was wonderfully cooked and presented, especially the wagyu. Friendly and efficient service topped off a great night.

I love how this fine dining restaurant is pet friendly. Everyone could bring their fluffy puppies to enjoy the meal and have such wonderful experience. I had a vegetarian set menu and everything was delicious and the portions were very decent as well. Can't wait to visit again soon.

The food, service and attention to detail is fantastic. I strongly appreciated the staff being so informative with the dishes as they served them, it made the experience more enjoyable. If you also happen to celebrate a special occasion such as an anniversary which was our case, The Gantry is a great choice, and we’re very grateful for their consideration and special treatment.

Just had the amazing 4 course vegetarian tasting menu from here and it did not disappoint. Lovely staff and incredible food. A must see!

I had the 4 course meal and the food divine. Only my second time having course meals, but definitely the best place I’ve been to. The turkey breast and leg and the carrots were the best. Not sure what they did but it was the best carrot I’ve ever had. Went for my 1 year anniversary and they organised a cute dessert as well which was much appreciated. The server (Jun) was amazing, made the whole experience way better, gotta give credit to Jun for making the night a really special experience. Will be coming here again for special occasions!

Came here for my birthday and got the 4 course vegetarian tasting menu. It was amazing. Food was so different and staff so well informed. I would highly recommend for a special occasion.

Outstanding food, service and atmosphere. Rhys and the team in the kitchen are producing dishes they should be really proud of. The Chef’s Selection was amazing, the dishes were exciting, delicious and perfectly suited to the setting.

Sadly disappointing dinner here with a party of 6 adults last night. Arrived promptly and seated at the booked time of 7.30pm. Mains and drinks ordered a few minutes in and all was going smoothly until we noticed it was 8.45pm and we had yet to have the 1st course. Bread was not even provided to tide us over. 1st course finally arrived just before 9pm and we had to question a waiter what the delay over the meal was as we were not interested in waiting around for another hour for the 2nd course. No real explanation given, aside from there was a delay in the kitchen. Then some bread and butter for the table was hastily provided and the next 3 courses started to arrived within reasonable time frames. Clearly the kitchen had forgotten about out table. For $130 per person for a 4 course meal and a 1 hatted quality restaurant we expected better or at least not have to finish dinner at 11.20pm for 4 courses. The 2 starters were innovative and delish, mains (incl veg option) were very underwhelming and dessert was OK. Wait staff were friendly enough but attention was difficult to get at times and we were clearly overlooked. Only the bread was complimentary to make up for the long eait times. No apologies from the manager or even an explanation from the kitchen. Perhaps it was a ploy for us to spend up on the wine. Considering it was a long overdue catch up for our party, it worked, as we ordered 4 bottles of wine by the end of night. Go if thirsty but stay away if you want a proper hatted experience or an enjoyable dining experience.

So funny they bring the sanitizers before. All food was satisfying cool.

Fine dining - complete with a bonus chicken sashimi.

Upscale dining experiences are generally reserved for special occassions. On special occassions, people are generally looking for a very special treatment and food to really leave an impression. On our special occassion, The Gantry managed to effortlessly package mediocre service with disappointing - almost inedible - food, leaving us literally with a bad taste in our mouths.

I had booked this dinner in especially noting that this was for our anniversary and that we would like a seat by the water. The gentleman taking the booking on the phone noted and confirmed this, while also informing that they would be doing their best to make this particularly memorable. On the way in however, despite walking past several empty, unreserved tables by the water, we were seated on the only table with a large supporting beam that did an excellent job of blocking the only view of the water the restaurant had.

Further, upon specifically requesting still water, we were served with tap water, which wasn't as annoying as having to wait a long time for someone to come around even with the menu. While a separate vegetarian menu was great to see, the menu items themselves were a bit of a letdown. We tried the Panisse and Roast King Brown Mushrooms as starters and the Roast Beetroot as the main. While the mushrooms were beautifully presented and put together a great package of flavours on the plate, the Panisse could've done with a sharper flavour to balance smooth chickpea cake. Finally, the beetroot dish was an interesting mix of interesting things, but there was little done to limit the red stuff taking over everything on the plate and overpower literally every sense. Asked if she liked the food, my partner could only say, "It is interesting". Well then...

Oh and we ordered the roast chicken too. The breast was on the dry side and I generally like a little more fun on the plate in terms of any spices. But that's okay, I got handed black pepper to make my time worthwhile which fixed everything. Anyhow, next up was a pretty funny experience being told from the wait staff that the bright pink, complete jelly and definitely uncooked bit of the chicken on the plate was completely intentional! In that case, ladies and gents, I have stumbled by the newest outlet of chicken sashimi in Australia! Served intentionally lukewarm and ready to give you a real night to remember. Pics attached - you be the judge.

Never had I considered just walking out at an upscale establishment like The Gantry. We waited over an hour for our main course to come out!

In the meantime, we have to constantly chase the wait staff to bring out what we ordered... like water and bread. The wait staff is inattentive, hard to flag down, and forgetful. No one even cared to ask how our night is going, whether we need more wine, how is our food going...etc.

By the time the food had arrived, we were so hungry and tired to even care about how the food was luke warm. Jetted out of here as soon as we finished eating to avoid waiting for another hour to get our dessert or suffer the terrible treatment from the wait staff!
Anna
Beautifully presented food. Tasty too with unique flavours. I like how they put in effort for each dish to create a flavour combo that is both different and special. There are plenty of fine dining establishments that do not do this for plant based dishes. Had a great evening. The only downside was the very, very slow service. Many instances when we needed something and couldn't get any help because the waiters didn't frequent/look in our area often. Even when they didn't have anything to do and were standing there, I think they just forgot about our table. Nonetheless, I would recommend highly for the food.

Love everything about this place. Food, service and vibe here is top notch. Fine dining with a relaxed vibe. It's a hidden gem. Every dish here is perfection.

The vegetarian set menu is delicious! The savoury highlight of the night was definitely the roasted king brown mushroom and the chocolate dessert is every sweet tooth's heaven. Would definitely recommend for your next special occasion.

The Gantry is situated on the dock, inside a hotel in Darling Harbor. The location is excellent and contrary to other reviews, the service was professional and friendly.

There is a limited a la carte menu, however, it was really good.

What was confusing and disappointing was the fact that we were charged for 2 bottles of still water. Sydney's drinking water is safe, so there was no need to charge for bottled water.

If only every meal could be like this. My co-diner and I arrived on a Saturday night, which apparently means the tasting menu is the only menu offered, but that was fine. After some Spencer Gulf kingfish done sashimi-style we moved onto steamed Murray cod with broccolini, almonds and green garlic, followed by roast chicken with celeriac, braised leeks and comte. Every dish shone and there wasn't a step out of place. The menu also showcased some great native produce, such as the grilled Paroo kangaroo with thin slices of kumara, hot little padron peppers and green romesco (a green romesco! It still worked). It was a cold night but in a surprise move we were given blankets to put over our laps by the warm and attentive staff. One of the best parts about the meal was that it wasn't all fine dining with everything on the bill and nothing on the plate - they fed us properly and we left very happy. Whatever you're doing Gantry it's working, so don't change and please keep doing it. Five stars.
BigRon
I wanted to love this place but it was ridiculously cold to the point of being uncomfortable for every person who was dining here tonight. Why on earth this place had the summer blinds pulled with tables and chairs on the balcony is beyond me - it was like dining in a fridge.....13 degrees with 40kmh winds blowing off the harbour. They were giving people including my wife rugs...at $110 per head for the tasting menu you could barely enjoy it. The food and service was great to be fair which if they'd used their brains and closed the glass doors (it was not so busy that they needed the room) all the people would have loved it. It was not just us - people wanted to eat and get out of there to thaw out. Another weird thing is there were people staying at the hotel with dogs walking through the restaurant - I have a dog but I don't want to see him on a nice night out for dinner.....
The food is lovely, the location great, decor nice the staff good and i could even ignore the local dog walkers but it was totally overshadowed by the freezing cold conditions of this restaurant.

The staff were very friendly and the ambience was good. I did enjoy the food. The food display was beautiful and the food was delicious. The restaurant is next to the beautiful harbour. It's very easy to book in a table - book on zomato and I received booking confirmation in just a few minutes.

The ambience is nice, mostly driven by the location (waterside, next to/underneath the Harbour Bridge). The outdoor seating in Summer is best if really waterside, the remaining seats aren’t quite at the level of this price point.

We went with the vegetarian degustation, and the overall taste was good. The serving portions are certainly too large - this lead to struggling to finish or even taste some of the later courses of the 6-course menu.

The highlight was the confit globe artichoke, and I would say the low point of the meal was the miso braised eggplant. The roast king brown mushrooms were excellent, especially with the potato roesti, however these were distracted by too many elements to the dish. The chocolate with dulce de leche ice cream desert was certainly a great way to finish.

Overall, I would recommend it as a one off experience. Definitely felt that less is more when it came to food itself.

Actual rating: 4.5

Lunch at The Gantry was a lovely experience and we really enjoyed the food, service and ambience. For the entree and mains, we shared the honey bug with macadamia, the kangaroo fillet with beetroot and the duck sausage. My friend preferred the kangaroo while I was partial to the duck sausage. Despite the sausage being a bit dry, due to lack of fat perhaps, I loved the flavours and textures of the meat with the pickled pumpkin. Dessert was a whole other level. We started with the green apple sorbet with meringue and the warm pumpkin cake. They were so delicious, we decided that we needed to try another dessert, the chocolate capsule. This was basically an adult Snickers bar and also lived up to our lofty expectations. The one hiccup of the day was when we found a piece of plastic in the kangaroo dish. However the important thing was that they dealt with it swiftly and professionally. Definitely an A++ for service recovery. The service staff were also friendly and efficient which also contributed to a seamless dining experience. We were lucky to be seated outside on a clear sunny day that have us some lovely views. Would not hesitate to recommend The Gantry for a special occasion.

The food was average, nothing amazing.. service was good though. We were seated outside by the water which was nice, it had a beautiful view and very suitable for date night. I recommend ordering the crispy chicken and squid dish!

Had a very lovely evening with hubby. We opted for al la carte rather than the degustation.
The service was fabulous, the wait staff were friendly and accommodating.
The food was yum and servings were very generous. The kangaroo entree was a main size!
The wagu beef was perfectly cooked and seasoned.
The desserts were lovely and delicious! Overall, the food and service was fantastic. My only qualm was the table seating arrangements. We were seated at a two person table against a window wall which directly on the other side was a table of four - because of the window pane between us, it almost felt like they were sitting right next to me - it felt odd and uncomfortable and I had to try very hard to not look in that direction.
I would recommend making sure you don’t have one if those tables when making a booking, spoils the nice intimate dinner that it was supposed to be

We ordered from the a la carte menu and favourite dishes were:
- Beluga Lentils (4/5): That puree with the lentils was lick-off-the-plate yummy!
- Cauliflower (4/5): Same deliciousness for the sauce of this entree! But the portion size was too small
- Jerusalem Artichoke (4/5): The artichoke was cooked perfectly and tasted almost creamy but again the portion size was very small
- Spiced Pumpkin Dessert (5/5): This was by far my favourite dish. Loved the biscuity base and how spiced the ice cream was on top. It wasn’t overly sweet and I could have eaten a bucket of this!
- Beef (4/5): Very tender and cooked perfectly

The dishes that were ok:
- Quail (3/5)
- Duck (3/5)
- Chocolate dessert (3/5)

Least favourite:
- Agnolotti (2/5): This was undercooked and pasta was a bit lacklustre
- Custard Apple (2/5): Kind of had a weird bitter after taste
Located on fabulous Sydney Harbour tucked somewhat under the Harbour Bridge, the Gantry is both restaurant and bar and does both well in a beautiful setting. The decor is simple and lovely. We had the tasting menu and a word of warning, the servings are enormous for a multiple course menu. Each one feels more like a main meal on their own. You’ll need to be very hungry when you arrive. The tasting menu is good value and the food is magnificent. We had the matched wine with our meals. The sommelier gave wonderful descriptions of each wine and it was interesting to try different things. Next time though I’d probably go for a wine of my choice because there were some in the tasting menu that we weren’t that keen on. The service was very attentive and I’d definitely go back when they have their next tasting menu on offer. The Gantry knows how to do food. Perhaps lunch is a better choice than dinner though so you can take in that view.

Fairly nice place overall. Altho a bit hidden. We had the 7 course degustation which was quite enjoyable and generous sizing. Service was pleasant.

The harbourside restaurant at PierOne on Millers Point features a dark, timber industrial interior fitted with a gorgeous glass display of wine bottles and deck side tables with awesome views of the harbour. The Gantry, a hatted restaurant which offers an Italian-leaning menu, is best remembered for its hospitality rather than its conventional and boring dishes

I began my evening with slow cooked duck breast with mushrooms and smoked prunes. The duck breast was tender and succulent but the typical mushroom broth was both unimaginative and did not enhance the duck meat considerably.

My main dish. A suckling pork belly with sea grapes and saffron, attempted to emulate the traditional Cantonese method of roasting the pork belly but failed with a chewy and sticky fat layer which stuck stubbornly to my teeth. That was certainly not how it should be.
Once a month go to!

I love this, you pay the $40 and get unlimited fresh coffee, hot chocolates and tea! That's for starters.

The food is amazing, fresh and always ticking over! I have never been disappointed in coming here, the wife and our friends we visit with are always talking about the next date to set to get back here!!!!
One hatted fairly new fine dining restaurant located in Pier One hotel.
Excellent innovative modern menu, generous and tasty weekday 2 course lunch menu. Highly recommended!

Went for the vege degustation, would definitely recommend. Food was very creative and all delicious. Service was great, our waiter even brought us a glass of champagne for my husband's birthday and was really lovely about my dietary needs.

Fantastic food and service!
Would highly recommend if you want to impress an international colleague or for a romantic evening.
I will definitely be back.

Food and service was 5 star 👌. I will recommend this restaurant to everyone who wants to have the best of the best.

My partner and I went here Sunday lunch to claim the voucher I won from my school (Le cordon bleu). It was a very nice weather and the people make it more nicer by attending our needs in a professional way.

Thank you so much Gantry Team 👏👌❤️🎉

We dined here for a long ladies lunch to celebrate a birthday.

The food was spectacular, flavours perfectly balanced and plated so beautifully!

Can't pick a favourite, as every single dish was just amazing!

Cocktails here are also fabulous!

The chef has an impressive understanding of ingredients and can inspire tasters. They can even give some usually not so charming ingredient a second chance. I don't usually like beetroot but their beetroot tastes crispy and well marinated. Will definitely revisit.
Good Food Good Life
I never give any place 5 out of 5, but it's really difficult to fault this place. From food to service, everthing is impeccable, enjoyed everthing, will be rushing back. Well done The Gantry.

Went for lunch on New Year's day. Didn't feel welcomed. No one there to greet or welcome us nor any acknowledgement from any of the staff walking past. A waiter came by and showed us to the table after I walked up to him. A waitress came by our table and asked if we wanted still or sparkling water. After we had informed her that another waitress has already attended to the water she displayed an unimpressed facial expression.
I felt that the bread was not fresh and quite dry. For mains, we had the Butterfish and the Rangers Valley beef. Both dishes were delicious. The beef could've been more warmer and it also would've helped if the waitress explained that the beef is cooked quite rare. Apart from that both mains were great. The waitress gave us the dessert menu and accidentally gave my husband the wrong menu. She apologised and explained that she will come back with the correct menu. In the meantime I looked at the dessert options. She didn't end up coming back with another menu so I shared my menu. The waitress came to take our dessert order with a big rush. After I ordered my dessert, she was about to walk off so I had to stop her to order coffee for my husband. I had the lychee, mango de leche dessert which was refreshing and summery. I felt that our overall experience wasn't very good for the price your paying not to mention the location. The service was a real let down and doesn't reflect the delicious food. There's alot of competition out there and so many choices so if they want to have customers coming back then they should really focus on the service.

They say, on a sunny day, Sydney Harbour sparkles at its best, especially with a gentle but sturdy breeze. What then is an opportune time to catch up and have a meal beside a renovated pier, with no hint perhaps of its past, but within a contemporary designed hotel as a bonus. Welcome to the Gantry.

A hidden gem... located on the water just under the bridge, start your evening with a cocktail on the welcoming lounges outside.

We had the tasting menu and all the dishes were divine. The presentation beautiful, the service outstanding.
We came here for drinks prior to attending a lavish wedding in one of the function rooms (another story, but just as bad). Brilliant location with just the most appalling service. Staff more preoccupied with chatting with each other than serving customers or clearing tables which were a shambles. Drinks list was also surprisingly limited for a bar that promotes itself as being something out of the ordinary. We had one drink & left.

Water views, chilled out atmosphere, friendly and helpful staff and a nice n quiet surrounding - what more could you ask for from a bar (or a hotel)? That's exactly what Gantry is. Nestled away from the hustle and bustle of Sydney Gantry is a part of the Autograph collection (Marriott). And it does total justice to such a rich legacy!

We couldn't have picked a better Spring day to enjoy an amazing outdoor lunch! Located by the wharf on the quieter side of the harbour and away from the crowded quay area, The Gantry offers a refined yet relaxed e.

Where have you been my entire life? I am so glad I've finally found you. Haha...I was invited here to attend a special event and was immediately blown away by the spectacular harbour view. Unlike nearby Circular Quay where is full of tourists and buskers, this part of the harbour is so much more tranquil with equally amazing water front. The cheese station, the oyster bar, the freshly cooked pizza, the lobster rolls, the pimms, the G&T, the wines, and most of all the happy people fully immersed themselves in such beautiful surrounding and good food. It was truly an amazing night and I can't wait to come back soon.

The food at The Gantry is presented beautifully with a keen eye for detail. The potato, cauliflower & Comté was absolutely delicious, though I wish the serving was bigger (you could easily just order more of this though). Crunchy hazelnuts add a different dimension to the mash. And out of the desserts I really enjoyed the blackberry, peach, olive oil and jelly. The restaurant is minimalist, albeit a bit stark.

Found this place through pinterest. The bar is an interior designer's dream. I couldn't take a good angle from the first floor, but if you go up the second floor, the view of the bar is just breath taking. I ordered their apple cider and I enjoyed it really well. A wonderful classy bar to relax and mingle.

We decided to dine at the Gantry at the last minute one night and were delightfully surprised that we got a table (probably due to the rain!). The Gantry is down by Pier One on the water in the theatre district on Hickson Road. It is a darkly lit space which is perfect if you a looking for a spot for a couples dinner. The menu includes a la carte (nice departure from the plethora of degustation-only around Sydney). The chef and kitchen staff a obviously trying hard to make the menu creative, visually stunning as well as delicious. We enjoyed the Spring/Summer a la carte menu and will return.

Great location and well hidden - I have worked up the road for years and didn't know about it.
Good cocktails and bar service, however waiter service was pretty slow as they seem to be spread quite thin.
Menu was ok, however some of the dishes are a bit odd so definitely not for everyone.

While staying at Pier 1 hotel , decided to have dinner here other day . From ambience perspective this is perfect . Right on water front with an amazing view of harbor. Being a vegetarian , I didn't find many items on the menu.
( actually there was only one veggie starter and one veggie mains on menu). For mains I ordered a dish comprising of beer root , goat cheese .and raspberry and it was delicious . Well presented . Restaurent also offered bread roll with flavored butter along with Beer . Worth trying - just for location , view , food and very friendly service .
Simply Starving
I came to the Gatnry for lunch and enjoyed the Sydney Festival tasting menu - three courses with a glass of wine! We started off with crab which was light, refreshing and really tasty. Then had the lamb with a leek mouse and butter lettuce for main, which was delicious! The lamb melted in my mouth and was cooked to perfection! To finish, we had berry sorbet with lemon sauce. All the dishes were full of flavour and the presentation was impeccable. It's a great venue with a spectacular view of the pier, and I would highly recommend coming here for Sydney Festival before a show!

Prior to our date with Geoffrey Rush in the Sydney Theatre Company, a few drinks were required to get us in the mood. Of course The Gantry was the most inviting place on a sunny afternoon. We were seated outside, with the blinds drawn so as to shade us from the relentless sunset, but still able to see the passersby, the lull of the water in Walsh Bay.

We opted for the set menu plus a couple of the items from the main menu. The portions are on the lighter side, however after sharing one entree, three mains, two desserts and a cheese platter, we were glad to have felt just right before our important meeting.

The ingredients are limited on each dish but each ingredient is thoroughly explored and paired. We find the crab hidden under the kohlrabi, its texture compared to the radish. The duck was had in 4 ways: breast, leg, pulled plus crackling. The gamey taste is abundant. Pan-fried snapper with smoked cream was adorned by purslane succulent! Tender lamb with leek and tarragon left us wanting more.

For the sweet stage, we were surprised by the licorice jelly, lemon curd and violet sorbet. So refreshing and yet full of zest on a summery evening. In keeping with the duck obsession, the duck egg curd with raisin, granola & malt ice cream did not disappoint!

There's still time before the curtain call so we indulged a little more with the cheese platter. A myriad of goodness in one plate: cheddar, goat cheese, blue cheese, dehydrated grapes, fig jam, carrot relish, flax seed wafers, fruit crisps - where do we begin? From one bite to another!

Another beautiful affair in Sydney. Next time, we won't be "Rushed" and we will soak in the dusk, the breeze and the sea of culinary delights!

Perfectly framed against the backdrop of Sydney Harbour, The Gantry have been doing great things this past year. Greatest of all was getting exemplary chef Joel Bickford on board to run the show. Using his experience from his time at Biota Dining, Bickford has revolutionised The Gantry's menu, turning the freshest seasonal ingredients into edible art.
Kis The Cook
If you haven't been to The Gantry already then stop what you are doing and make a reservation and head down for the Fast Festival Feasts which are part of the Sydney Festival. An absolute favourite of mine as you can try lots of places without hurting the wallet. Food was cooked to perfection, service was impeccable. Definitely will be back.
Justin Brown
I decided to try The Gantry as one of the 'Sydney Festivals' suggested restaurants, with a unique set menu designed solely for festival goers and budding fine diners alike. If you've never enjoyed a fine dining experience before, or even if you're a seasoned professional in this domain, for only $70, this three course set menu (including a sparkling wine) is an absolute steal.

The lamb, and the amazing views were the standout. Not to mention the service - a fancy experience for a fair price.
Naomi Rheinberger
Came here for the Sydney Festival set menu and it was seriously incredible. Each dish was presented absolutely immaculately, it was almost too beautiful to eat. The lamb was by far my favourite, it was succulent and simply bursting with flavour. The service was phenomenal, with out waitresses being extremely polite and attentive.

The perfect place for a fine dining affordable set menu before heading off to one of the many Sydney festival shows and activities.
Nourishment Bowl
Came here for lunch before the Sydney festival and dined on their three course festival feasts menu. We have the crab to start which was light and delicious. The main was this perfectly cooked slice of lamb with butter lettuce and leek. Dessert we had this blueberry sorbet with a verbena and lemon sauce. All beautifully presented and wonderful service. Definitely make a booking here!

Had the degustation here a couple of NYE ago and it was sensational. Have been back and the food is decent. Lovely environment and we often go for a drink afterwards at the Park Royal.
Moods
Great dining experience
Service impeccable
After a less than great experience in the foyer bar of the hotel we were a little apprehensive about the resteraunt but we need not have worried
The waitress was present but not over present and we looked at the new menu (apparently a couple of months old) with some feeling that we were about to experience new territories and we weren't disappointed.
This menu is about bold flavours and combinations not about quantity but by the the end of the journey youve had elegant sufficiency and your taste buds are buzzing.
I had the hen to start followed by the duck. Topped it off with a chocolate caramel salty delight.
The decor and position of the gantry does not disappoint either.
We will be back
Sydneybigeater
Nice little spot on the water, the gantry was a pleasant surprise and great place for a girls lunch. I can't fault the presentation of the food, although would like to see a little bit more on the mains. I had the fish which was perfectly light and fresh, paired with the herbs was a fantastic lunch. I have to say the restaurant fit out and bar is amazing, love the ambience and woodwork. Would definitely come back and try some of the cocktails!
Taylah Nilsson
I have a little love-hate relationship with this place. Don't get me wrong- the venue, the setting and the views are all incredible. So is all the aesthetics of the food too. But when I actually ate their food, I was left a little disappointed. Considering the pricing of the food, I expected to be wowed. Which I wasn't. My avocado toast was burnt and my eggs weren't cooked (considering it cost nearly $25 for that on toast- you'd expect a little better). Saying that, i'm a totally open-minded person and hope my future experience here will be better!
Sir And Mlady Dine Out
Sir and M'Lady Dine Out is a restaurant, travel, bar and food journey across Australia and the world. Come with our group as we eat, drink, holiday and cook our way through life. Wednesday, 16 September 2015. THE GANTRY - PIER ONE, THE ROCKS, SYDNEY. Walsh Bay, Sydney. There’s a kind of magic about Pier One, tucked away under the beautiful Harbour Bridge at Walsh Bay.
Danielle
We were staying at Pier One Hotel and ordered room service from The Gantry. The tiger flathead and tartare sauce was delicious, although the batter was a little too thick. The roast pumpkin gnocchi was nice and crunchy and the purée was creamy. And who can resist Parmesan fries?
Although we didn't eat in the actual restaurant, the food was delicious and they guy that delivered our food was friendly.

Last week, you read about how I visited the recently opened Gantry Restaurant in Sydney. We had a great meal featuring fresh seafood and interesting cocktails. I added Gantry to my list of places that I'd gladly return to, expecting that to mean on a next visit to Sydney, since I still had many other places I wanted to visit on this trip.
Laura B
After reading numerous positive reviews of The Gantry I was expecting a lovely dining experience. Unfortunately it was really underwhelming. On Sundays there is a $49 brunch menu on offer. It includes a crepe station and unlimited prawns and oysters. As there was only half an hour left of the buffet we decided to dine off the bar menu. We ordered at the bar and went to find a table. It was a struggle to find a clean, freshly wiped table. When the food arrived the oysters were full of shell, the salt and pepper squid was heavily battered and the Bosc pear, prosciutto, Tarwin blue and green salad unfortunately arrived with no pears! On the positive side the views are stunning and it has the potential to be the perfect spot for a long lunch.

Very nice restaurant, loved the atmosphere and the service was great. The cocktails were delicious especially the 'Lady on the Pier' which was recommended by the waitress. The lighting was dim but it was so smart to have these decorative table lights on each table that gave the right amount of light without being too overbearing. For starters had a dozen fresh oysters, venison tartare both were delicious. For mains we had the lamb chops and steak, my partner thought the steak was average however I really liked my lamb and considering their speciality is seafood I would definitely go back to try a seafood dish for mains. The beetroot chips was a flavoursome little side dish we picked. For dessert had the goats milk pudding and apple parfait both were great. Went to the bar after dinner for a few drinks, great bar setting.

Let’s make this clear right off. That ox cheek was delicious. With some cute little shimeji mushrooms, togarashi spice, and ‘smooth’ potatoes. Well, I’m not sure I even noticed the potatoes much. The cheek was tender and melty and delicious. I loved it. We headed down to Gantry on a wintry night. There’s not a huge selection of restaurants pre-theatre at Walsh Bay, and not only did I have an entertainment coupon but there were some really good reviews, so good that I’d put it in my list of restaurants to try. English chef, working with artisanal producers, something about a contemporary philosophy of food, chef to David Beckham, worked at great restaurants, blah, blah, blah.

The Gantry is a new establishment in Sydney, located along the waterfront in Walsh Bay, inside the Pier One Sydney Harbour hotel. They specialize in on of my favorite cuisines: fresh, local seafood. On my recent business trip to Sydney, I visited Gantry with a group of 4 other co-workers for dinner on a Monday night.

The first thing you see when you walk into the lobby of the newly renovated Pier One is a zinc-clad bar. It’s the centrepiece of the lobby, sitting beneath a canopy of glassware, framed by floor to ceiling glass windows and doors. It’s here you’ll find veteran Bar Manager Ben Taouss and the perfect spot for a pre or post dinner drink.
Sir And Mlady Dine Out
Walsh Bay, SydneyThe new chic signature restaurant making waves (and looking out over them) at Pier One is The Gantry. Their Executive Chef, Christopher Irving, brings a wealth of pedigree and experience here, having cooked for the Queen, the Beckhams (as their private chef) and worked with Gordon Ramsay. It's a CV that gets any appetite excited and mouths watering.

I attended The Swinging Bridge Wine Dinner last night. It's a monthly collaboration between The Gantry, BlackStarPastry and a NSW Wine Region.

Seriously out of this world! Four courses matched with four wines matched with an amazing atmosphere.

I'll definitely be back again AND I cannot wait for next months' collaboration with Keith Tulloch.

Such a beautiful setting! Had a delicious cocktail watching the sun set across the Harbour. Magical! Dinner was brilliant - really friendly staff who helped me with the wine list. We had the shared lamb dish which was absolutely delicious and possibly the best lamb I have ever eaten. Despite eating a starter and main I managed to squeeze in a delicious polenta based dessert and a coffee. A perfect evening and highly recommended.

“Thanks for warning me that this place was fancy,” my date snarks as we enter the bar. “I might have ditched my hoodie and Kmart jeans for a dress if I’d have known we were going to posh it up.” Perfectly framed against the backdrop of Sydney’s harbour is The Gantry: a gorgeous bar/restaurant with pretty cocktails and an even prettier view over Walsh Bay

Dined at Gantry for their monthly 5 course Chefs Table special featuring Shoalhaven Coast wineries and BlackStar Pastry. It was delightful to say the least. The dinner setting was very impressive with organic root vegetable featured in the crudité spread with mouth-watering baba ganoush and a John Dory taramasalata. The rest of the meals were all paired sophisticatedly with regional wine and beer. The star of the show was the Roasted field mushroom soup with grilled chestnut mushroom paté which released the intense mushroom flavour into the hearty soup, perfect for my liking. The team from BlackStar Pastry showcased two desserts, which had all guests licking their spoons in amusement. The evening ended with a cute offering of petit fours accompanied by tea or coffee of your choice. Overall, at $130 per head, it was a very unique experience and a great opportunity to start a conversation and make new friends.

Simply Amazing. Had dinner at the Gantry last Friday with 3 other friends and i must say it was simply amazing. Great vibe in the bar with some crafty cocktails. Try' lady on the Pier' - girl power all the way. We had seafood for entree and shared dishes for mains- Lamb shoulder and chicken. Amazing again. The girl that served us explained the food philosophy impeccably. Couldn't stop talking about the chef. Lets not get near the desserts- yummmmmmmmmm. Winner all the way.

Amazing. I just had dinner a few days ago at The Gantry and I just want to say that I was impressed with the service and the food. The food is fresh and delicious and the service up to standards. I will definitely recommend the place to anyone who likes seafood and mostly modern Australian cousin. Will return.

(Mostly) Amazing food, abysmal service. As far as food goes The Gantry Restaurant and Bar is largely outstanding, yet overshadowed by the staff having a complete lack of understanding of acceptable service. It appeared that the waiters and waitressess were playing a variation on the game of hide and seek in which they knew patrons were there yet chose not to seek or even acknowledge their presence. In order to successfully order a round of drinks I was required to yell incomprehensibly and flail my hands about like an extra on the set of One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest. Woeful. When I had the honor bestowed upon myself to recieve their attention, orders were largely missed or forgetten altogether, when querying one partcular waitress on gluten free options, she simply took a page from the politicians playbook and ignored the question altogether, not even offering so much as a deflective, convoluted answer. Thanks guys.

Also they overcooked the steak. Nice work. See you in another lifetime.

Absolutely Awful !!!!. We dropped in for lunch on our way to the Writers Festival yesterday.
I can honestly say it was the worst lunch I have had in a long time.
When we arrived we told the waitress we only had 45 minutes so she suggested the lobster bisque.
It took 25 minutes to arrive it was luke warm and tasted pretty ordinary. It did come with a glass of wine which was the best thing about the lunch. The service was almost non existent.
Don't bother.

Wow!. I was told by friends who live in Walsh Bay that this place was good.
They were wrong. It is brilliant.

Great diner. Really enjoyed our diner at the gantry Friday night. Short and powerfull menu with great seafood to start with. Nicely presented and flavourfull starters followed by a choice of one of the 6 - 7 main courses. I had the rib eye and it was really great while my wife had the Barramundi : both great choices.
I would go back instantly.

Simon Food Favourites review. Nice looking bar area with water view glimpses and restaurant area looked pleasant. Tried the Fresh shucked oysters (Tathra, Pambula, Merimbula) with shallot & black pepper mignonette ($3.50 each). Enjoyable flavour and some noticeable brine. Served on ice gets a preferred tick from me. One of the Pambula oysters could have been presented a little better but overall they did a pretty good job and included some of my preferred Sydney Rock Oysters. Also tried the The Gantry beef short rib burger with havarti, dill pickle, smoked ketchup served with hand-cut triple cooked chips ($24). Pretty decent sized burger with flavoursome and moist pattie cooked medium rare. Perhaps a touch overly large in portion to the rest of the ingredients for my liking but meat lovers will enjoy. Bun was soft and good and all the ingredients played nicely together on the palate. The triple cooked chips were very good with excellent outer crunch and seasoned well with salt and pepper. The garlic aioli was nice although I would have loved a spicy mayo for extra spice flavour. Service was friendly and welcoming. If you sit outside or near the window area there's water views to be had. Was impressed enough to want to return to try other dishes on the menu.

The Gantry Restaurant & Bar is one of Sydney’s latest additions to the food scene. Located in Dawes Point, the restaurant has waterfront views over Walsh Bay with modern décor and cozy ambience. The head chef, Chris Irving who used to work with Gordon Ramsay and also as David Beckham’s personal chef – so naturally we were intrigued!

Located inside Walsh Bay’s Pier One complex just near the south end of the Harbourbridge is the new Gantry Restaurant and Bar. In a space marked and defined by the timber columns and wharf like venue and space; Gantry is slick and intimate with a smart Modern Australian Menu with a strong leaning towards seafood – you’ll note that a large selection of the menu has seafood but there are choice selections of poultry and meats.

Raw materials are a definite focus at the recently refurbished Pier One Sydney Harbour. Interior designers Bates Smart have done wonders with reclaimed timbers; creating a stylish maritime playground stretching from the brass-caged boating clubhouse bar to the nicely substantial dark wood dining room, including tables extending seamlessly onto the pier (if you dare)...

Walsh Bay has just become a bit more interesting with Pier One Hotel Sydney Harbour revitalising their restaurant space into The Gantry Restaurant and Bar . The menu, which celebrates local and sustainable provenance, is in the hands of the remarkably humble Executive Chef Chris Irving. Canadian-born Irving has cooked alongside Gordon Ramsay and been a private chef for The Beckhams. As the sun drifted behind the neighbouring wharves, I joined hotel owner Robert Magid and over two hundred other guests, to sample canapés, including handpicked spanner crab with sambal wrapped in betel leaves. We were also treated to buffet stations including a tempting ice sculpture loaded with prawns, Balmain bugs and fresh uni provided by Jules Crocker from Joto Fresh Fish (who incidentally run my favourite weekend seafood market, Cleanfish Australia ). Our lips were kept wet with two signature cocktails courtesy of Bar Manager Ben Taouss, a veteran of Pocket Bar . It was hard to pick a favourite between the Lady on the Pier, which updated the Pink Lady with lemon myrtle and elderflower, and the Swinging Monkey , that used coconut water to good effect in a spiced Monkey Shoulder whisky cocktail served over hand-chipped ice. I Ate My Way Through
For many of us, not much beats a beautiful wine served alongside a delicious dinner, with delectable desserts to follow. It’s the epitome of a ‘complete’ dining experience and doubles as the perfect way to unwind after a busy day. So just imagine my excitement at the news that all these wondrous elements would be combined in the form of monthly wine-matched dinners at The Gantry Restaurant and Bar in Sydney’s Pier One . These dinners mark a superstar collaboration between The Gantry’s Executive Chef Chris Irving and everyone’s favourite watermelon cake pioneers, Black Star Pastry .
