Review Cho Cho San - Sydney

Daryl “Dino”
Thoroughly enjoyed the experience here. Tasty food - good fusion of Japanese and western tastes. Liked the grilled prawns a lot as well as the rice! Very cool decor and ambiance, staff was neutral not too friendly but not rude as well. Overall a quite decent and pleasant place, would wanna come back sometime again!

Top notch dining experience! We ordered the Christmas set menu. The food was really delicious and perfect portion. Absolutely loved the soft shell crab, king fish ponzu and hibachi duck breast. Very friendly and accommodating service from the staff. Really enjoyed our dinner. Highly recommended.

Have heard of this place for quite sometime, popular Japanese fusion cuisine, had some not very impressive experience with the sorts of Asian fusion food, was quite sceptical about the high reviews of this place, but turned out quite an unexpectedly fine experience! was also actually a bit shocked at the packed restaurant when we walked in around 6pm on a Monday night, maybe the so-called post-pandemic crowd-phobia … Anyway, highly recommended to try it out, even myself as a big fan of authentic Japanese cuisine still enjoyed a lot, fresh and very flavoursome, the customer service is also a plus!

Ambiance was 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻, comfortable but romantic enough. The food is more of a western interpretation of Japanese food. The teriyaki fish collars surprised us with its flavour and turned out to be our favourite for the night.

Had a wonderful dinner here. We were wished a happy anniversary on arrival which was a lovely touch. Sat up at the long bench table but the addition of pot plants made it feel intimate and private. The food was amazing and the staff took the time to ask any questions we had. The sashimi was a highlight and the cocktail list was fantastic. Potts Point dining at its finest.

Overall, a disappointing experience at Cho Cho San that I was hoping to celebrate Mother's Day at. Serving sizes were way too small for a main dishes averaging $30, which was over compensated with condiments leaving us all thirsty from the saltiness at the end of the meal. Customer service was good where one of the ladies made sure our table was clean, however the time between entrée and sashimi dishes before the main dishes was a sudden long wait of 30mins. For a party of five, we were squished at a table set for four where one side of the table was sitting shoulder to shoulder for two hours.. The XO Crab Rice was way too oily, as if my rice was swimming in oil. The miso in the Eggplant dish was too salty, the batter was too thick in comparison to the eating actual eggplant inside. The Kingfish sashimi was not fresh. There was a cockroach on the wall of the restaurant next to our table, close to our heads. The bathroom toilets were worn out and unkempt, crying for a renovation. The Coke beverage was mostly a glass of ice with a drizzle of coke. Safe to say I won't be coming back or recommending anyone else.

Amazing set menu! Everything was so good and worth the money. Service is top-notch, Jackie took care of our table so well we feel very welcomed. Cozy vibes, high quality food.

Delicious food and great service! Our cocktails were also very yummy, I'd highly recommend this place for a nice night out with friends and family. Such a lovely ambiance and friendly staff. Will definitely be back soon with my husband!

We had the most amazing food on Tuesday night. The service was excellent, the food came out quickly but well spaced between plates. Friendly staff went out of their way to explain the menu and were always checking to see if everything was ok. Alice from Genova, Italy was gorgeous. Very helpful, friendly and knew the menu so well. The most delicious food I've eaten in ages! We'll be back!

Best place! Loved the vibe, the food and the cocktails! The waiters were friendly and very attentive - Definitely one of the best places in Potts Point!
Ray Venn-Brown
the food was some the best modern Japanese we have had. the staff was excellent. the only criticism was the noise level. Like most restaurants there was no form of soundproofing , just hard surfaces. it dosent take much to put some panels on the walls , or under the tables or on the ceiling
Johnny Labib
Great experience, their interpretation of Japanese food was amazing, really enjoyed the favours and presentation. Another plus was the service, our waiter was honest as when we tried to over order he advised the banquet on its own was more than enough and he couldn't have been more right! Definitely will be back!

Been a few times and always great. Good vibes, great drinks, interesting and delicious take on Japanese dishes: and reasonably priced. Love the miso eggplant and sushi bowl.

Modern Japanese food to die for. Excellent service, beautiful cocktail as well.

A great experience with great and exciting food along with some of the best waiting staff and chefs I have come across. Awesome !!

The fitout design and ambience is excellent! Each dish was splendid!! Staff was courteous and always on the ball! Cho Cho San team... where you guys been all me Dining life ? Three thumbs up from me! Please keep me in the loop when there a new menu!!!

Took the boyfriend here for his birthday dinner, best decision. Amazing dishes, but we both agreed that the "Whole Prawns Kombu Butter" was the absolute highlight. It changed my life.
Julie Wolstenholme
Great food especially the wagyu, and pork buns, wine and great staff!
Poata Okeroa
Impeccable service, unreal fitout and a to die for menu Cho Cho belongs in New York!
Sonja Scalise
Great atmosphere and incredible food - will definitely go back - staff where also great- you will not be disappointed.

Amazing foods, beautiful decor and excellent service. I'm never disappointed when I eat here.

Sensational food, service and ambiance (in no particular order). Highly recommend.

I think I was expecting a lot from this place so found it quite average. The menu is quite small with not that many dishes to choose from. The dishes we had were quite salty. We did enjoy the mochi and soft serve for dessert.

Loved everything this place had to offer, came very close to a 5 star for me. The staff were super helpful. The food came out pretty fast despite there being not a single empty table and the flavors were amazing. A must for anyone after a gastronomical experience

First time trying Cho Cho San! We were extremely excited...

Taste:
* Pork Katsu Steam Bun
* Scallop
* Petuna Ocean Trout
* Kingfish
* Prawns
* Wagyu Steak
* Okonomiyaki

The pork katsu bun was very dry and totally not worth it. The scallops, ocean trout and kingfish were the only three dishes that we genuinely enjoyed as they were very fresh. The prawns and Wagyu steak were very average but did not wow us. The Okonomiyaki tasted very batter-y and like a pancake (I know it’s basically like a Japanese pancake) but it was so thick that none of us could finish the dish.

Service: We had a reservation at the restaurant and upon arrival they asked us to wait while they get the table ready. Which is totally okay, except we’ve never waited that long for a table at a finer restaurant. We also had to wave waiters down multiple times to refill our water glasses.

Ambience: Dark, moody and overall good.

Value: Pricing was standard. Portions were good.

Overall: 3.5/5. It’s a good place to try out but wouldn’t be revisiting any time soon

The overall experience was lovely - relaxing interior and friendly staff. The highlight was definitely the miso eggplant sticks and definitely save some stomach space for the black sesame mochi!

Place has good ambience. The food is nice there and amazing cocktails too, my fave would be raspberry slushy with whiskey. My fave food would be beef tataki and stuffed squid.
Kim
Highly recommend getting the wagyu, kombu butter prawns and crab fried rice (combining the Kombu butter sauce with the crab fried rice was to die for). The staff were also very accommodating and even gave us complimentary green tea ice cream to celebrate my significant other’s birthday.

Actual rating: 3.5/5.
I had high expectations for Cho Cho San but unfortunately I found that the dishes ranged from “amazing!” to “this is nice but I can get this elsewhere for heaps cheaper”

The kingfish sashimi and the miso eggplant were amazing, I would recommend them.

Unfortunately, I could only like the scallop and the trout (had wasabi flavour) as much as a person who doesn’t like scallop sashimi and wasabi could enjoy it.

The okonomiyaki was nice but I preferred your traditional okonomiyaki. The stuffed calamari was also quite nice.

Dessert was the let down. The green tea soft serve was yummy but you could get the same thing anywhere (this was also severely lacking in presentation). The black sesame ice cream mochi was also very enjoyable however it was expensive for what you get and once again, you can find similar in the frozen section of the asian supermarket.

Service was very nice and prompt.
Aimee.
What a cute place to come to for fine dining and degustation. We ordered a bunch of different small dishes to try including bao, fried chicken and butter prawns. All delicious and yummy.
Becky
Food was good. Get the eggplant, oysters and sashimi. Service wasn’t that amazing to ask for tips
Khin Eaint Hsu WaiOo
Staff are very friendly and attentive. All the dishes we ordered were very delicious! Had a nice time there
Yunyi Xie
Nice ambiance. Food was ok, nothing extraordinary. Tuna sashimi, stuffed calamari and crab fried rice all had sour flavour so the experience got pretty boring towards the end. Staff at our table seemed really annoyed or he was just too exhausted to say a word.

Really not a fan of this “high table / bar seat” concept that’s so prevalent in Australian restaurants these days. Not when they’re charging you a premium price. With this in mind, I felt our experience was somewhat disappointing as the menu is radically overpriced for what you get. It’s tasty, but a rip off. And the seats we had were bad. I wouldn’t recommend Cho Cho San if you had $200 to spend on dinner for 2 - you’d get far better value meals elsewhere.

Finally got to try Cho cho san! The dining area was spacious and dim litted, I loved the ambience! Perfect for a dinner date or group dining as there were smaller side dining tables as well as a high table which could be converted to a group dining table or could seat multiple couples.
We ordered the Cho cho san feast to ensure we got to try a bit of everything!

The highlight from the feast menu was the ocean trout and kingfish! So refreshing! And the dressing was spectacular. Every other dish was very enjoyable and flavoursome, the most disappointing dish was the mushroom fried rice - the brown rice was quite hard a d tough making it quite dry and not enjoyable, and the charcoal chicken - which was also quite dry and was not a fan of marinade/flavours.

Sticky was pudding was so buttery and moist! And the black sesame mochi was to die for! So good that we ordered seconds.

The overall night was very enjoyable! ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Cho Cho San serves modern Asian fusion. Most of the dishes felt familiar but with an inventive twist, they became something new again. Favourites would have to be the sashimi and the wagyu. The seafood is really fresh and better value for money than at similar restaurants. For dessert, try the mochi sandwich. The only downside is the noise and crowd on a busy Saturday night. Dinner can feel a bit rushed.
Daniel Wirjoprawiro
A lively, popular and relaxing Asian fusion restaurant in Potts Point. Great for groups to try out all the variety of dishes - they’re all amazingly delicious 😋 We were lucky enough to get the set menu and got to try EVERYTHING. The stand-outs are the rice, wasabi laced sashimi and the mochi dessert was amazing to end the night.

This place just came across on my Zomato app when I was doing food hunting, this reminded me my experience at Cho Cho San about more than a year ago. My fiends and I were there to celebrate birthday, unfortunately, the overall experience was no where close to be a happy birthday experience. When the bill came and we wanted to have more time to talk so didn’t immediately pay the bill (we had a large group about 10), the guy at the bar and a customer service girl were secretly (they thought we didn’t hear) saying something really bad about us. This left the night an unhappy experience. Will never consider going back because of the attitude of the staff. Very disappointing.

To be honestly, the taste of the food were not my style. Complex flavor made the meal hard to classify into delicious one or terrible one. But all the food materials were fresh, especially the calamari which is soft and tender. The kingfish sashimi was magnificently beyond my imagination based on my previous experience.
As an Asian, the only most appealed to me is black sesame ice cream.
Gisela
For the price, everything tastes fine - not mindblowing but acceptable. Plating is nice. Ambience is a bit crowded if you want to talk with your guest. Will come back only if someone asked for :)

Had the "make your own sushi" and some other dishes. Quite pricey for an izakaya. The food was nice but didnt feel worth the price. Looks good on photo though. The pork cutlet was quite chewy. Also had the prok katsu bun as entree and they were ok.

I came there with my friend on wednesday night arround 9pm. The restaurant still have a lot of people when we thought its gonna be quite arround that time. We are not welcomed. One of the waiter is seems not friendly i dont know its racist or not. But he seems nice with other customers. We so dissapointed with the service. But other waiter its really nice to us. The food was amazing but so dissapointed with the service. I can give 5 stars if the service not terrible
Amanda
Second visit to Cho Cho and it never disappoints. Highlights for me were the scallop ceviche, the Japanese pancake w pumpkin and seaweed, fish collars and the miso caramel sticky date. Up there with the freshest ceviche/sashimi I have personally had and I’ve dined at all the well known Sydney spots. For me Cho Cho compares with Sokyo in taste but the servings are more generous and it’s better value for money which simply means I can go there more often haha

Cho cho San ruined my birthday night, waitress was not enthusiastic seemed to let us finish asap. Someone took my expensive umbrella and one staff gave me a broken umbrella instead! Food was not bad just like Chinese cuisine not Japanese. Wont go there any more and not recommend.

Got too caught up in the experience that I forgot to take photos of the food to share. Having been here before my expectations were high and they did not disappoint. The spicy udon (Japanese bologna) was tasty as always but the highlight was the prawns 🦐 buttery and melted in your mouth. The atmosphere was buzzing but service itself wasn’t fantastic and you felt crammed in (although maybe it is going for the authentic Japanese experience), still the food itself gives this place a high rating and I would recommend!!

I love discoursing new Japanese restaurants to try, Cho Cho San is situated in Potts Points and offers modern Japanese cuisine. Definitely would be back to try more delicious food.
Samantha Lo
Love the concept of this restaurant. Had the tasting menu, every dish was great and the pairing with the sake was perfect. Very romantic ambience, the place seems to be only lit by candles. The restaurant does get a little overwhelmingly noisy during dinner but apart from that we had a great experience.
Negin
Definitely doesn't live up to the hype - the food is good but doesn't blow you away by any stretch of the imagination. Especially given the price point. I have been there twice - atmosphere is always good, great for a small group. I went there for lunch the 2nd time to with my husband and very young ( sleeping baby) to avoid the crowds. The waitstaff didnt seem too impressed with us having a baby in the restaurant despite her remaining asleep throughout our whole lunch. They placed us at the table right at the end of the restaurant ( near the bathrooms). I totally understand that having a baby in the restaurant can kill the "cool" vibe they are looking to achieve however we got a little more attitude than needed.

Food: I had such high expectations because of such reviews but it was so so for me. I mean, it was good but not wow. I did enjoy all the raw fish fishes, particularly liked the stuffed squid and dessert.

Service: this is what made me give 3/5 instead of 4/5. The waiter who served us was not polite initially, didn’t give us attention. While ordering, we ordered our 5/8 dish and he told us ‘hey man I think that’s enough’ - I’m sorry, we know our eating capability and we’ve seen the dish sizes...that did not impress us at all and on top of what we ordered, we ordered 2 sets of desserts and finished everything. We were very close to telling the manager as we were not impressed.

LOVE the kombu butter grilled prawns and sashimi trout!!! These items are locked in their menus. I loved the menu from a different season than the current one- the charcoal chicken didn’t taste Japanese (was a miss) and I miss the lamb cutlets 😭 the calamari was cooked perfectly. there’s a good dessert range- I love the black sesame mochi!

This place is phenomenal! I am so grateful that somebody cancelled their booking last minute and we were first on the just in case list. Do book ahead of time if planning on dining here. I personally enjoyed every dish... the oysters, ocean trout, pork bun, drinks, kingfish, tuna, beef tartare, chicken, mash, prawns and the mocha dessert. Must tries are the pork buns (I was going to give this a pass as you can get this in the west but do not go without trying) and the beef tartare!!! Mash was sooooo delicious and complimented the wagyu and prawns perfectly. Thank you cho cho san for your amazing hospitality - from the service to the food and the coat hangers.
Lily
Heard about this place for a long time, finally found the occasion to pay a visit here! The food was really amazing, we really liked the eggplant miso stick and the tartare. The okonomiyaki was so fluffy and delicious. Service was great and friendly as well! Definitely recommend this place if you love fusion type cuisine!

Price: 3/5
Taste: 4/5
Service: 5/5
Decor and presentation: 5/5
Visits: 1

Cho Cho San has a relaxing interior that you notice as soon as you walk in, and the multitude of candles flickering around the restaurant is a thoughtful addition to the ambience. Service was prompt and very attentive throughout the meal with staff even providing complimentary green tea ice-cream and a candle to celebrate my friend’s birthday. The eggplant miso sticks were very interesting and a nice way to start the meal but the stand-out dishes were as most reviews said, their kingfish and ocean trout. The sauce was great but the accompanying vegetables or pickles were a little overwhelming in flavour. The toppings on the okonomiyaki were a little on the salty side however it was still enjoyable although not reminiscent of traditional okonomiyaki I’ve had in Japan. The daily special was 200g of wagyu which was a little tough and chewy on the exterior. Finally, the desserts were also great, the black sesame mochi is a classic, the mochi skin is neither too thin or thick and pairs with the black sesame ice-cream well.
Pingu
The kingfish and lamb chops were too sour. Fried rice too salty. Sticky date pudding was boring.

The ocean trout and kombu prawns were the only two standouts that were worth the money.

Could overlook all this if the service wasn’t so terrible - our male waitstaff was rude and stuck up. Did not feel welcome. Felt like we were being rushed out of there so they can clear the table.
Elliechan
Came here for a birthday celebration dinner. Ordered the sashimi platter. Oysters do not enter my mind when I think of sashimi. After dropping $200 plus on our meal and drinks had to eat at Harajuku gyoza as we were starving. If you are a big eater steer clear of this place. Over rated.
Loved coming here. Highlight dishes were the beef tartare, black sesame mochi ice cream and kingfish/ocean trout/tuna sashimi. I really liked the DIY nori rolls too, they’re were fun to make, and 4 different sauces to add into. Staff were very friendly and accommodating for anything you need, they provided complimentary seafood and seaweed and avocado dip.
Milandro
Fabulous food, top notch drinks including a Japanese take on the Negroni. Great vibe and attentive service to boot, despite a full restaurant. Recommend the banquet.
Celin
Probably the best okonomiyaki I have had. The wagyu beef was amazing and had that melt in your mouth flavour, the garlic that came with it was a cherry on top. The sticky date pudding was bomb! I would gladly recommend Cho Cho San to anyone who enjoys a satisfying feed! The only negative thing I can say is that although we booked a table we still had to wait for an extra 30 minutes til we were put on a table but other than that it was great.

You honestly can’t go wrong with Jap fusion! We got the set menu banquet two. Honestly, i was in a food coma after this. I honestly don’t think i could fault anything in all the dishes. Although i didn’t really like the sticky date miso pudding - not a fan of sticky date either. It was alright, tasted like a brownie with miso syrup on top. Everything else was really good, the edamame dip was accompanied by some biscuits that had a tint of spice, as you continue to eat it.

Ocean trout and kingfish had sauces that made it 10times more tasty! The sauce they used for the trout had a hint of wasabi. The pork katsu buns were yummy! Probably just needed a little more sauce. Chicken karaage - always delicious! The fried rice was also very good! It tasted very fresh and the ingredients all worked very well together! The lamb cutlets were soo soft! The spinach sesame salad was ok, i didn’t really like the dressing. The black sesame mochi and the green tea ice cream was perfect to finish off the night! We also ordered drinks! I really enjoyed the yuzu spritz! It wasn’t a drink that was too strong, was more subtle in sweetness!

The food came out very fast - which is a bonus! Service seemed like they were understaffed, as even though it was a Wednesday night, it was still quite crowded. Nonetheless, one of my favourite Jap fusion spots! Highly recommend it!
Love At First Bite
Cho Cho San is a restaurant that serves Modern Japanese cuisine and inventive cocktails in a bright room with a long central table. Located in Potts Point, I have heard great things about this place and I love Japanese food so we checked it out for dinner on a weekend. To start off with, I ordered the Pineapple breezer with kettle one vodka, aperol, roasted pineapple cocktail. This was a great drink, nice and sweet and refreshing and not too strong with good pineapple flavour.
Bronte Stock
Service was impeccable and the food was divine! Eggplant miso sticks were a hit along with the whole king prawns (be ready to get your hands a little dirty with those). The wasabi vinegar that went with the oysters complimented them perfectly. Can’t believe it took me so long to tick this place off my list but I will definitely be back.
Sam
Lovely venue with romantic mood lighting and nice atmosphere. Very nice for a date. Service was great, efficient yet friendly and relaxed.

Food was good overall but there was some hit and miss feel to the dishes.

Some dishes were creative and memorable, such as the edemame dip, the bursting with flavor salt and vinegar potato cakes and the smokey and crunchy beef tartar. The mochi black sesame desert was a delightful end, smooth and chewy.

Other dishes, however, were a disappointment. The lamb cutlets were plain and didn’t have much flavor, sauce or seasoning. The chicken karrage was like a fancy looking version of KFC. And the tuna tartar looked great and creative but was weirdly lacking in flavor - I think it needed some citrus or something.

This is third times visiting chochosan.Had birthday lunch this time, thanks to friendly staffs! they are very helpful and great service !! Of course,Each dishes are still fantastic! Definitely coming back for fourth time 👍

I’ve always wanted to try this place and finally did!

Food here was delicious!! My favourite dish was the kingfish.

Would definitely recommend it!
Miss Kim
Delicious modern Japanese dishes. Gorgeous interior and chic look. Excellent restaurant for girls night out and for date nights as well. Highly recommend! Enjoyed all the dishes.
KS
Went to this restaurant due to their high rating and it doesn’t disappoint my husband and I. The quality of the food was above our expectation but the bad side is, food was serving slow. However, we will still revisit, for the good food!
Rivo Janala
I ordered the eggplant, beef and sashimi. The food was standard not so special for me, and the price is too high for the quality of the food. Ambience and service were nice though.
Sharon
Amazing!! The first thing you notice when going in is the atmosphere of the restaurant. It is super minimal and very classy. The food is amazing and a great Japanese fusion. Their daifuki is to die for and I could never get enough of it.

The biggest date night of the year... Valentine's Day! Cho Cho San was filled to the brim with couples eager to take advantage of the intimate modern setting, dimmed mood lighting and innovative, fresh cuisine. Sat at the big communal bench which at first appeared not so intimate and private but it actually had the opposite effect...diners seemed to be more interested in their own interactions rather than focusing on what was going on in the room! So pleased there was not a set menu so we were able to choose from the appetising menu at leisure! Started with cocktails...a NIPPY ROCKSHOP w gin, aperol, fortified wine and sake which was pretty heavy on the alcohol but certainly hit the spot and a BLUE CRUSH mocktail w shaved ice! Proceeded to order a myriad of dishes to share! Started with the standout Petuna ocean trout and the kingfish w ginger, shallot and chilli. Both were so fresh and tasty with a focus on quality, presentation and accompanying dressing. Then mouth sized bites of an interesting take on prawn toast, followed by chicken karaage, the most succulent lamb cutlets w koji glaze, mouthwateringly great wagyu w shallot and a side order of butter lettuce salad. Finished the evening off with a thin slither of deliciously decadent chocolate tart. Brilliant evening out and really enjoyed the interactions with the relaxed but amusing staff. Highly recommended!

So this was my first time at Cho Cho San and I'd have to say that the food was very impressive. The ambience was very nice with dim lighting and fun service. I'll definitely be back and I have taken a photo of the dessert which was amazing mango sorbet (not something I would normally order in a Japanese restaurant)...

Stunning! What an amazing experience. The food here is exceptional. Tender lamb chops, melt in your mouth kingfish sashimi, crab omelette to die for! Just overall very delicious and reasonably priced food and dining experience. They also had a lovely fruity and dry Brut (Blanc de Blanc) which complemented all the dishes. Oh not to mention hands down the best pork buns I’ve ever had!

Went here for lunch with family and it was a nice experience. The service was good and the place was nice, except a bit noisier than what I had imagined. We ordered the miso eggplant sticks, japanese bolognese, crab omelette, teriyaki fish collars, wagyu beef and the fried rice with shiitake and egg, matcha icecream, matcha tiramisu and sesame mochi.

I'd definitely reccomend the teriyaki fish collars and wagyu beef. For someone who doesnt really like fish, it was enjoyable because of its softness and nice taste. The fried rice was alright but a bit too salty for my tastes. The matcha tiramisu was the dessert we enjoyed most. Would definitely come back to eat!

Re-visited and as usual service and food quality was excellent! Don’t hesitate...it’s great food, great ambience, and staff are all friendly and attentive!
Will return soon....

It is one of the favourite Japanese among locals and Sydneysiders and doesn’t disappoint with the food, drink and service they deliver. We tried eggplant skewers, ocean trout, oysters, steamed fish, fried rice and crab omelette! Their miso eggplant skewer is one of the popular dish but it was my least favourite and may be the one and only dish that disappointed me a bit that night. I was expecting more juicy and meaty eggplant but the crust was too thick.. other dishes on the other hand, all had their own flavour and delishness, crab omelette being the star of the night! I tried their homemade yuzu and green tea soda as well and it was a light, citrusy, very refreshing drink. Service was very attentive! Though I believe it could have been more reasonably priced as some plates are so tiny for the price. Banquet menu can be smarter if you are really hungry.
Ev
Good food. Shit service. Sat us down at the worst seats in the house next to a sink, when there were clearly so many better seats in the restaurant - clearly thought other guests would be more deserving of them. Not once did they refill our glasses with water. When asked for the bill, he just gave us the wireless machine to figure out how to do it ourselves, then simply ignored us from then on. not chef hat worthy - insult to others on the list.
Meo Cheung
I have to say I like the interior and that’s it. Oh well, maybe the bar as well. But definitely not impressed with food. It’s been overrated for so long, food tastes okay but not creative and inspired enough to achieve the popularity and steep bill.
Bo Meng
Out of the ten dishes that I ordered, the only two that stood out was the prawns with kombu butter, the beef tartare, and the eggplant miso sticks.

Pork katsu bun - had too much sauce and was very salty.
Scampi toast - was tiny and lacking, the taste of the dried bonito shavings overwhelmed this dish.
Tuna avocado - was nothing special, not good not bad.
Agedashi tofu - was very disappointing, the skin was nice and crispy but the sauce was way too sour.
King crab omelette - was nice and had a interesting texture.
Spicy sushi bowl - was just a over-glorified bibimbap, any fresh taste of the fish was covered by the chili sauce. Such a disappointment.
Wagyu beef - under-seasoned and tough, so badly done.

Would I revisit? Maybe for a light lunch.
Maddie Loves Food
Branching away from traditional Japanese cuisine, this Potts Point izakaya serves food based on an informal style of Japanese dining. Loved the hiramasa kingfish dish and classic karaage!
Katie Dav
Quirky and lovely space with good service. Did the banquet which as first seems small but is certainly enough food by the end of it. The annoying thing about this places is the service some of the dishes come together with a Long gap before the next service. Half way through our steak the cabbage arrived. Apart from that everything was great with good music and drinks
Jonathan Elizabeth Slade
Wow the food here was sublime! Best agedashi tofu we have ever tasted. Funky hip are two other words that spring to mind. Dine here and you won't regret it. This is Japanese food on a whole other level.
Ragazzo Tricolore
Love this place, one of the staples in our neighbourhood. Amazing Japanese food, both hot and cold. Super interesting wine and sake list. Buzzing atmosphere. Great service. What’s not to like.

Coming to Sydney and being absolute lovers of Japanese food we knew we had to hit up Cho Cho San. We had the 7.30pm booking and were seated at the long bench as soon as you walk through the door.

Looking at the menu I knew I wanted everything but also that my wallet would not allow that. With some guidance from the waiter and some fellow boisterous guests down the table, we ordered the perfect amount of perfect dishes.

The menu is obviously designed to share and on first inspection they looked quite small but you seriously filled up after a few. To accompany our meals we opted for some Japanese cocktails and then I tucked into some San Giovese which was divine.

Everything was spot on, we ordered: Edamame Dip, Eggplant Miso Stick's, Kingfish, Yellowfin Tuna, Scampi Sashimi (on special), Agedashi Tofu, Green Beans and Fried King Prawns (on special).

My favourites: Eggplant Miso Sticks / Green Beans / Fried King Prawn.

Now it would be so unlike us if we didn't order dessert so we got the Green Tea Soft Serve and Sticky Date Miso Pudding (the pudding was delicious but felt slightly overpowered by the Miso sauce on top). Our lovely neighbour across the bench who we got chatting to for our entire meal ordered the banquet and couldn't finish any of his last few dishes offered us his Matcha Tiramusu which I obviously devoured and it was my favourite dessert of all 3.

If I am back in Sydney soon I will hit this place up again.

Service 5/5
Food 4.5/5
Drinks 4.5/5

A good find.. And good value for money for a $65 Japanese banquet! It's quite a small venue, tucked away in Potts Point, you'll feel a little cramped when you come inside, but after a short while, it sinks in that you are quite cosy here, and it's a nice relaxed feeling. The banquet itself was alright - but I did think the flavours of some of the dishes were a bit average.. Maybe it's just me, but I've had better Japanese fusion tapas elsewhere.. Don't get me wrong, it's still a great experience and some dishes are very creative such as the Japanese Bolognese, but perhaps it's because I didn't try their other banquet which had dishes which may have been more of the highlights. If you like sake, they have a matching sake list to go with the banquet. Overall, I wouldn't mind going back, but I wouldn't race here. Interesting food, just slightly not as great as other places I've tried.

The food was amazing - I highly recommend the king fish and pork katsu bao entrees. There were no faults in anything except for one of the male waiters who was not so friendly/attentive until the very end when it was time to pay for the bill. Would definitely come back again.

Came here to celebrate a friend's birthday on a Saturday night, there's nothing wrong with the food but I really have to speak out what happened to us that night.

We received the bill and we did spend some good time arranging how we should pay since we were a big group. This caucasian bar staff with beard, wiping his glasses stared us with a disgusted look and said to another staff along the lines of 'That's just my breakfast money".

He probably thought that we didn't understand what he was saying because we were speaking in a different language but this is very disrespectful and definitely left us with unforgettable bad memory, especially when this was someone's birthday. I'd rather you say that behind our backs but not when we were sitting at the table right next to the bar.

I really hope the management team can read this and please tell him to respect your customers. No one deserves to hear that right in their faces, especially when we did nothing wrong but spent a little bit more time to pay the bill.

Other staffs were super lovely, especially one of the waiter who kindly moved the light behind us so we can take photos with better lighting. You're the best!

#悉尼美食##肉西施##日料# Cho Cho San
不便宜也不出挑的新式日本菜

《Edamame Dip》很有创意,毛豆爽口,配上薄脆挺特别的
《Mushroom Hotpot》
《Ocean Trout Sashimi》就是鲑鱼加上酱油,只是装盘装得不错而已。
《Black Sesame Mochi》

I don't usually write reviews, but I am confused as to why the ratings are so high?! Out of all the nice restaurants my partner and I enjoy trying, this was by far the worst! We ordered six plates and only enjoyed one. The chicken karaage and bolognese were heavy and tasteless. You get better baos at the noodle markets for half the price. A very disappointing evening! 😞

Unique and modern fusion style Japanese menu. Restaurant interior and decor is on point. Menu items are very hit or miss. Some are unique and well executed, like the crab omelette while others are extremely standard. We were told the Japanese bolognese and fish collars were good choices and while both tasted okay, the ingredients in the dishes did not reflect the standard of restaurant that Cho Cho San appeared to be. It appears as if the restaurant is still seeking its identity, would love to see more consistently fun and unique dishes through the whole menu as there is much potential here.

I came to Cho Cho San after reading the great reviews on the internet, and the place was definitely not a disappointment! The atmosphere and service were wonderful, and the waiters gave really helpful advice and recommendations. The first dishes we got were the bluefin tuna, and petuna ocean trout; both were very fresh and well flavoured . We then tried the pork katsu, and prawn steam buns, which were hands-down my favourite dish of the night. The meat was so juicy, the bread was soft and the sauce just complimented the whole bun - a little pricey but worth the money. The king crab omelette, Japanese curry was a bit of a disappointment because all I could taste in the curry was egg. I would have liked the crab taste to come out a little more.
Overall, the experience was great. I found the price a bit on the higher end but the food was really good quality. I would come back just to eat the steamed buns again!

Cho cho san is our favourite place to dine in Potts Point. The place is so hip yet modern!! Japanese fusion done right. We loved everything on the menu. Can't wait to go back!

An afternoon surprise birthday lunch with 8 of us... I thought it might be a little complex, figuring out how to order the right food and combo... but with some guidance from the waiter, we ordered a great selection, and perhaps all the dishes are so good, you can't go wrong. While the dishes seemed small, all those bites added up, and with a generous serving of delicious fried rice and the rather incredible kingfish collars, a substantial bite of crispy, miso-glazed goodness, we definitely had enough food.

Everything was delicious: Japanese curry crab omelette, Jerusalemn artichoke tempura, miso eggplant. Yup. Tasty. With all that concrete, the acoustics might have been bad... but they were fine. With two bottles of wine added to the bill, it was $65 each with a tip included. Great value, we thought, for such an elegant, interesting lunch.

Awesome trendy Japanese fusion - love the vibe and the casual feel. The dishes are very interesting and delicious ! Would recommend for a nice dinner out.

I've been here twice, and both times I've had the black seasame mochi. You just keep coming back for that! It's unlike any other mochi I've ever had! It's frozen and it just melts in your mouth (that being said, I haven't had that many). Whatever, just believe me on this one.

Savoury food is really good too. Pictured here is the spicy sushi bowl which is like a bibimbap/poke fusion dish. I would say 4.5 stars because the spiciness in this dish was a bit overpowering. A noteworthy savoury dish would be the lamb cutlets.

Everyone that visits this place is dressed well, but it's not overdone. So dress smart! The ambiance is fun and loud.

👌 perfect place for a girls night out. Attentive service, it was lively and had a great overall atmosphere. We decided to order dishes from the menu rather than have the set menu. The trout, tartare, and the scallops were a stand out. The only gripe was that even though we made a reservation weeks prior, the four of us were still seated on the communal table.

For a birthday surprise, we headed over to Cho Cho San in potts point - on Mardi gras as well :P It was a fairly cool and wet Sydney night, unfortunately, but the restaurant, I must say was totally worth it. Now, we did have a few issues when it came to actually ordering, but overall I want to say the experience was really positive.

Overall, I was disappointed.

We booked ahead for a table for 4. We ended up on the massive communal table in the middle. Space was a little cramped and we were quite close to our neighbours. If you able to get a separate table, this would be preferable. Service was good, attentive and food came out quickly.

The food was nothing to write about. We ordered 8 dishes in total: scallop sashimi, ocean trout sashimi, eggplant tempura, tuna tartare special, tofu, fried rice, Japanese Bolognese and lamp cutlets.

Favourites were the ocean trout sashimi and the lamb cutlets, they were excellent. The rest of the dishes to be honest were very average for a 1 hat restaurant and expensive for the price point. They had pretty small servings.

Would not visit again. Expensive, sub-par food.

Cho Cho San is rowdy, it’s fun and straddles the line brilliantly between being a quality eating place and fun drinking house. The menu equally takes a completely non-traditional approach to Japanese. The edamame comes in dip form, the tempura is of pumpkin, the chicken is fried not grilled Yakitori-style and there’s no sushi in sight. But it totally works, providing you’re open to an experience and not wedded to tradition.

Have been on my list for a couple of years, finally came to try it for dinner on a Saturday night. We left it a bit late to book & only time available was for an early dinner, which we didn't mind. Very simple decor design, could be quite tranquil except for the hip pumping music they had playing. We had a small table to ourselves rather than the big communal table. The menu is bit short vs the average Japanese restaurant, about 3-5 selections for each of entrees, raw, tempura, noodles/rice, meat, veg & desserts. Some items seem fairly standard, yet some are interestingly confusing.... We tried a mix.

For entree we had the Pork Katsu steamed buns. The bun itself was quite fluffy & soft. The pork katsu was crunchy & juicy, the spicy mayo just gave it a hint of heat. One of the better steam bun offer in Sydney (still think Mr Bao is better). For raw we got the special, which was a yellowfin tuna with an avocado purée served on a fried wonton wrapper. Inventive, and the wonton wrapper was crunchingly enjoyable, but overall it's a little dry just need a bit of soy to add a bit of moisture. We then tried the mysterious Japanese Bolognese, which actually taste nothing like a Bolognese. It was an udon stir fry with mince and a sweet savoury sauce. It was actually very delicious, just has no hint of tomato & not Bolognese. For meat we got the wagyu beef, which really is just a piece of chopped up beef, with a sweet thick soy based sauce. A nice piece of meat, but not still some way to be top notch.

After seeing so many food review on the dessert, particularly the green tea soft serve, was super disappointed that they no longer have it. The alternative of the sour plum swirl soft serve was not good, it was just plain soft serve (too icy) with some sour plum sauce drizzled on. The matcha tiramisu was generous in size, it was very creamy with a strong matcha taste, mostly from the dusty on top. The best part of the desserts was definitely the black sesame ice cream mochi, for once the mochi was just a thin layer with plenty of ice cream inside.

Overall it was a nice dinner, but didn't feel it was quite hat worthy.

Misses the mark by and long shot, very disappointing. We dined with a group of friends and chose the set menu.

The Food: The chicken was like leather and so deep fried it was hard to find the chicken, udon bolognese was stodgy and overly salty, sashimi was fine but no additional condiments or wow factor, edamame dip was served with deep fried flat bread which was too heavy for a starter. Pork buns were ok but an over use of salt, fat and sugar seems to be the method of cooking to make the food taste nice. I usually associate Japanese cuisine as clean & fresh but unfortunately this was quite the opposite, fatty, salty and quite frankly very poor quality. Not sure what all the hype is about?

If this was a hatted restaurant, I would suggest that the chef signed up for basic cooking classes and the judge get medical check ups for his/her tastebuds

The Pork Katsu bun was below average because the katsu was tasteless and poorly marinated. It did not help when it was drenched with oil and the oil seeped into the bun.

No effort was made to marinate the chicken karaage longer and it tasted worse than those you could find from Coles or ALDI

Japanese Bolognese - Udon was unevenly cooked and the minced meat was overcooked and dry.

Kombu prawns - costs $25 but used lowest grade stale prawn which sticks to the shell when served - overcooked.

What to comment when your soft serve taste similar to 7-11's and cost 6 times more?

Celebrated a friend's birthday there and the ambience was lovely!

We had an amazing time chatting and munching on the food which was overall delicious!

Love the sashimi trout, the fish was fresh, perfectly cut and accompanied with a tasty sauce. The teriyaki fish collars was excellent too but can get messy to eat as you might need to use your fingers! We didn't mind ;) The sesame moochi, perfect desert. The plum sauce soft serve was nice too.

On the dark side the kingcrab omelette was a disappointment, the runny egg made the omelette bland and felt like breakfast food. It was not as tasty as the other dishes, recommend a skip. The pumpkin tempura although looked great but was average. Charcoal chicken doesn't compare to Lebanese charcoal chicken so not worth the price tag. Our mocktail taste like fruit juice with ice, didn't finish mine. Service was good, our waiter was cold to start with but warmed up to us eventually. What can I say I'm a funny gal!

All in all worth a try, pick the top notch dishes and you will not go away regretting.

This was my first visit to ChochoSan and overall my experience was a pleasant one. The staff were friendly, though I it did seem they were trying to rush us out so they had the table ready for the next guests. The atmosphere is also quite lovely, with dim lighting, creating a relaxing and romantic feel, but not the best lighting when you want to take photos. Their dishes and dessert can be a little overpriced for the portion, ingredients or techniques used to make the dish itself. However taste-wise they were all not bad, but nothing really stood out. The cocktail I order (Yuzu Caramel Old Fashion) was the perfect hot summer night drink to keep cool and feel refreshed.
Read the details of my first experience on my blog -->

We came here with very high expectations which were very quickly exceeded given the amazing atmosphere, food and service here! The restaurant had a great vibe and the waitstaff were polite and attentive. Every dish we ordered hit the mark in terms of flavour and presentation and came in perfect portion sizes. My personal favourites were the scallops, the black pepper and wasabi ocean trout, the teriyaki fish collars, the matcha tiramisu and the black sesame icecream mochi. An incredible meal! We'll definitely be back!

Quite pricey. Food was below average . Service was ok but what you are paying for the food provided is ridiculous. My gf vomited during the seating. Never been more dissapointed.

We arrived without booking since they told us we can try walk in table. We arrived around 6pm and got the table without waiting. The atmosphere was really nice and customer service was attentive and nice~ We ordered the ocean trout sashimi, king prawn and the terriyaki fish collar, all these dishes are delicious and the fish collar was our favorite! The sauce was not too sweet and really well balanced! Although we wait quite a while for the fish collar, I think it's because it needs time to grill it. We have the black sesame ice cream and it was so yummy we nearly wanna order one more! It was definitely a good spot for friends dinner!
