Another french restaurant my friend picked for my birthday. it s a nice atmosphere with friendly staff. truffles can be added to any dishes for additional $, we picked some dishes from the seasonal menu, the truffle dish is a little pricey and they used grinded truffles on the bone marrow so flavour not very popped i d say. but still a fancy meal with the flaming crepe.
With an oversized carved wooden bar, hand-painted tiled walls, four-metre antique French silk weaver’s table, and 1950 Parisian VeloSoleX motorised bicycle suspended overhead, the decor in Gavroche is as French as it gets. The menu pays homage to Parisian bistros, showcasing an array of classic dishes as well as a wine list of hand-selected French and Australian wines.
Great restaurant serving traditional French cuisine in a romantic atmosphère.
I dined here with a friend and used a Fork 50% deal. We were warmly greeted and seated at a nice table. We received water and the menu immediately. Bread was also served (complimentary). For starters we had the charcuterie board which had a selection of meats, pate, pickles and crusty bread. Everything on the board was tasty and we polished it off. For the mains, we decided to both order the mussels in white wine sauce and fries. It was a 1kg serving of mussels with a generous side of fries. The mussels were cooked perfectly, there was plenty of the delicious sauce and every mussel shell in the bucket had a mussel in it! (Win!) I appreciated the staff's attentiveness on the night as well. Overall, I had a great experience at Gavroche. Even at full price, the menu seemed like it would be reasonable for a mid week dinner or a date. Will be back soon!
Located in The Old Rum Store near Spice Alley, this French restaurant exudes charm with its fit out. We were warmly greeted and seated quite quickly. Water is immediately offered and brought out along with the menus. Big picture framed menus are presented and we decide to have appetisers and mains. I think score would be closer towards 4.5 due to below.
Service is pretty good however I think they mixed up our order of Soupe A L’Oignon Truffee (french onion soup) with table next to us when it placed in front of my mum and the table next door was missing their soup. Their’s was quickly brought out to them but I had to wait a bit for my Gratin De Saint Jacques (scallops) and possibly the only blip to our meal in terms of service. The soup was tasty and the scallops had a lovely creamy cauliflower and béchamel sauce.
For the meat mains we had Agneau (lamb) and Canard (duck) and these dishes were superb. Both were had tender meat and wonderful sides to them. Ratatouille with the lamb and Rosti Potatoes with the duck. We both loved the mains and definitely the highlight of the meal. We had Brocolis, Citron Et Amandes. This broccoli dish was a nice accompaniment to the richness of the meats.
The desserts were a must for us as we love French sweets. We had the Paris Brest (choux pastry filled with hazelnut mousseline) and Creme Brûlée. The choux was crisp and filled with a lovely hazelnut cream. Great contrast of textures and pleasant to eat. Creme Brûlée has a nice toffee shard top and creamy vanilla custard underneath. Great way to finish the meal.
Nice place to have a meal and pleasant atmosphere.
Beautiful interior and friendly staff! The scallop entree was amazing, and the escargot were nicely flavoured too. The creme brûlée was smooth and creamy with the perfect amount of sweetness
Gavroche is situated on the 1st floor of a new building in the kensington st eating precinct. Not really visible from the street level but has been set up with a nice ambience with plenty of french rustic charm, enthusiastic but unobtrusive service and plenty of personal space between tables.
The food is classic french bistro fare, a hearty affair with all the french bistro classics on offer - escargot, onion soup, tartare and duck confit. Everything was cooked well, from the creamy but smooth consistency of the mashed potatoes to the slightly bouncy escargot with the buttery garlicky sauce. While its just a Sydney interpretation of humble french bistro food, it is done well and a place that executes the fundamentals right is always appreciated.
This is a pretty good French restaurant located in Kensington Street. The decor and ambience is very reminiscent of Paris except with more space between tables. We had the 3 course menu which included a good selection of classic French dishes. The escargots were really good and the definitely use the table to soak up the rest of the sauce. The duck leg confit was another really great dish. The skin wasn’t super crispy but the meat itself was really moist and delicious.
Every dish was great but my favourite was dessert. The Paris Brest (choux pastry ring filled with hazelnut mousseline) was not too sweet and very strong in the hazelnut flavour. Service was also amazing so I would definitely recommend this place for lunch or dinner.
Somewhat of a hidden gem in the myriad of restaurants at Chippendale and probably our new favourite in the French bistro category.
So let’s take a tangent and say the deserts were amazing, nothing sounds more weirder to either of us but it was the standout of the night. Both desserts were equally decadent but with the right counterbalance of savouriness from the choux and the bitterness of the chocolate; we enjoyed both unconditionally.
Now the rest were just solid deliveries, nothing too fancy. Special mention has to be the ravioli. I mean yes there’s Pasta in French restaurants but usually it plays second fiddle to the classics. Here it’s a must try and the bisque sauce should make it absolutely impossible to pass up :)
Very happy to visit again. Maybe after we’ve done the rounds?
Really delicious moules mariniere, mushroom risotto and prawn ravioli. Great atmosphere with interesting decor. The service was excellent 👍👍👍👍👍
It’s so hard to decide where to eat on Spice Alley! But our decision was made for us, somewhat, in that not everything is open on a Sunday night. For example, in this little complex of restaurants stacked on top of each other, in the Old Rum Store, Bistrot Gavroche was the only one open!. We’d tried to pizza place down the street, where the waiters ignored us waiting for a table. Like completely not seemed to care at all. So we searched elsewhere.
Felt like I was back in Paris! Got the three course Paris menu with side broccoli and wine! Fantastic layout! Fantastic vibe! Friendly and welcoming staff! The highlight was seeing my crepe la suzette being flambéed in front of me! Would love to come back!
Everything you would expect from a classic French bistro, done with care and dare I say love? We shared a few entrees: trout tartar which had that elusive perfect balance and the silkiest duck pate I've ever had. My main was the sole/flounder which was cooked perfectly and not messed with too much, just some potatoes and a lemon butter sauce. Such a shame we didn't have room for dessert they sound delicious
We came here for late brunch on a Saturday and were amazed to find the place empty. The owner greeted us at the door. I liked his French humour and relaxed professionalism. They have a brunch menu on weekends (10:30 to 3pm). This is handy, as it's easier on your wallet. We had the charcuterie for starters. Great if you love top notch salami, but a little heavy if followed with beef. Maybe try the trout tartare instead. The roast of the day was beef short ribs in red wine sauce, served with Lyonnaise potatoes. It was awesome. Didn't look fancy, but the details were extraordinary. The beef just fell off the bone and the flavour was complex like good red wine. My partner ordered the croque madame. This was easily above the standard you get in most Sydney cafes, even those in Surry Hills. We finished with the tarte tatin - light & fruity, with an interesting hint of raisin in the glaze. I've been to many bistros all over Paris and Normandy - the unhurried pace is typically French. And the food here is definitely authentic.
In short: come here for a splurge or small birthday celebration. I don't know why this bistro is less popular on weekends. Maybe it's because this street is famous for top-notch Asian food? Or maybe it's the price. $110 for two (incl wine) is high, but I noticed they dropped the prices recently. If you want to relax & pretend you're in Paris for 2 hours, this is the best ticket.
I've been here several times as a treat for myself and my loved ones. It's got a beautiful, and luscious French decor with warm, candle-lit lighting for that extra winter time comfort. For a higher end restaurant, the food is good and very much a French home-cooking type of meal. I highly recommend the amazing and refreshing steak tartare that I ALWAYS get thats served with french fries, and the crab soup. Service is very friendly.
We came here from Melbourne with a group of 5 and I must say every single one of us enjoyed it.
Service was fantastic, food was really nice and service was spot on. Location is really good with a really cool vibe, must visit when your in Sydney and I will be back.
I decided to catch up with a few friends this week over an intimate dinner at Bistrot Gavroche. This intimate French bistro is located in the heart of Sydney and is now serving up a beautiful Parisian seafood set menu paired with a variety of delicate Pommery rosés, blancs and my absolute favourite - the Grand Cru 2006.
Upon walking in I immediately noticed the soft music - which helped to set the scene. The rustic seafood menu contained all the classic dishes and after a delicious complimentary sourdough & butter entree we indulged in a beautiful crab thermidor & lobster bisque, followed by the main of Petuna Trout à l'Oseilla and ended the menu with a lovely dessert of fig with ginger bread ice cream and double cream! These simple dishes involve a lot of cooking technique!
The service is friendly, efficient & professional and I honestly cannot fault the great wine list! I cannot wait to return to Bistrot Gavroche for another delicious meal. Thank you for kicking off our weekend with this beautiful dinner. I look forward to dining with you again!
Vanessa: Every now and then I come across restaurants that conjure up feelings of nostalgia, of roads once travelled. This was true of our recent visit to Bistrot Gavroche that transported me back to time spent in Paris and the south of France. Located in the Kensington Street precinct of Chippendale, this classic French Bistro offers diners a warm and inviting atmosphere, coupled with traditional French fare. Every detail has been accounted for to create an authentic bistro feel that envelops patrons the minute they walk through the door.
Lovely and authentic French food (and I know because Im French... also my profile pic is from there) They have great service by lovely French guys, french traditional food found in bistrot and lovely sweet desert that meals you away !! Also recommend their homemade lemonade or whatever juice cocktails they have on that day ! BIG THUMBS UP TO THEM !!!

I have been wanting to dine at Bistrot Gavroche sine it opened and it did not disappoint. Walking in, it reminded me of the classic bistros in France with the contrast of wood & brass, soft music & a relaxed feel. The menu was rustic looking and contained all the classic dishes that made it difficult to decide as everything looked delicious and the smell around me was so enticing. After delicious complimentary sourdough & butter, a selection of charcuterie served with pickles was a great start & whetted our appetites and was perfect with a drink. Then there are the hot entrees ordered. This consisted of the amazingly rich, buttery, utterly indulgent & delicious bone marrow served on toasted sourdough. I absolutely love bone marrow and would highly recommend this even though it is a rich dish. The king crab baked with mustard sauce was another hit - a mound of sweet crab meat was topped with blistered cheese all sitting in a pool of delicious sauce full of umami. For mains, we opted for classic dishes including scotch fillet with bernaise & French fries & sole meuniere. The steak was tender, flavoursome & cooked perfectly. And the fish - sweet, succulent with a golden crust & nutty butter sauce. Simple, delicious & effective food. Desserts consists of classics like profiteroles, tarte tartin or crepe suzette or you may be tempted to go downstairs to Koi for more fancy, modern dessert that nods to classical French techniques. Service is friendly, efficient & professional and there is a great wine list. I cannot wait to return to Bistrot Gavroche for another delicious meal.
Great food. Friendly service. Went for brunch and couldnt fault anything we ate. Would return. Had bottomless champagne and glass was never empty.
Move over Sydney’s smashed avocado, I’ve found Bistrot Gavroche – a French bistro in the heart of Sydney serving up a Parisian brunch with bottomless sparkling rosé on the weekends.
You HAVE to get their bone marrow on sourdough as an entree - it was outstanding!! I'd come back just for that. As it came out, we thought it was scallops on toast and was about to tell the waiter it's wrong - but it was the bone marrow, just different to any kind of bone marrow dish I've ever had. I went with some French friends who deeply impressed with that entree as well - so I recommend ordering this!
All the small dishes we tried were great too, including the escargot, beef tartare, and onion soup. We had some of their mains as well which were amazing, I personally think their entree dishes were more the stand outs though! C'est bon!!
We were reminiscing about the fact that 10 years ago one would have struggled to find a good French bistro but now there are a plethora to choose from. Although there are still plenty of bad ones too.
Bistrot Gavroche is up there. Maybe not as good as Le Bouchon or Cafe Lyon but pretty close.
Crab entree was good, lots of crab flavour
Lamb main was generally good. Could have done more with the ring of fat to make it tastier.
Beef was good but chips not crunchy enough
Tart tartin was a bit too sweet
Charlotte was good
We were invited to Bistrot Gavroche for an event called Only Lyon. Thi event was to promote the city of Lyon and their interactive food museum "The city of gastronomy".
Bistrot Gavroche is in the new restaurant precinct in Chippendale. This restaurant has authentic French feel, which is a credit to the owner Lionel. The restaurant is decorated in French bistro style with black and white patterned tiles and brass fittings.
The service was very good as was the food and wine. The canapes were very nice, the pate was most enjoyable and the quenelles were delectible. The quenelles de Brochet are exquisite fish dumplings which were served with a beautiful crayfish sauce. For our main we had the pave de rumsteak, sauce au poivre vert de penja. This was a nice tender piece of rump aged 270 days whic came with a delicious green pepper sauce, served on top of a bed of nicely prepared vegetables. We were served a clssic French dessert, probably the best profiteroles I have had. The profiteroles were served with vanilla ice cream and hot chocolate sauce. The choux pastry was amazing; it was crisp, brittle and melted in your mouth. This was a great night, with great company. Thank you for the hospitality Only Lyon, Lionel and staff.
The winter of 2016 will always be remembered as the winter of French restaurants in my diary. Bistrot Gavroche was the third French restaurant I dined at during this period. Despite being a self-proclaimed French cuisine enthusiast, I hadn’t heard of Bistro Gavroche until a month or two earlier, when a colleague recommended a newish French restaurant in Kensington Street. Whenever a new cafe/restaurant opens up in Sydney, it is always on my radar, but it gets immediately prioritised if it is French. And that was how I ended up here for a Saturday lunch.
made a booking at 8 on saturday night, the atmosphere was actually cozy, the staff gave you a hot greetings, ordered a pork terrine and escargots for the entree, both was amazing, there it comes the main, mate was ordering a duck confiq with crumbled and mash .I ordered a hanger steak, the steak came exactly like i wanted!medium rare!it feels like melting in your mouth ⚡️
Love the atmosphere in this new French bistro tucked away in Kensington Street precinct.
All the dishes we had on our visit were delicious ! The highlight for me was definitely the tender 270g Rangers Valley onglet - perfectly cooked to your liking and serving is generous.
This restaurant exudes all things French. From greetings to authentic music to even escargot. Frequented by many businessmen and women, this particular establishment serves to please. With attentive service, I think I will be back again soon. On my visit I tried:
Cauliflower Dubarry w/ Avruga Caviar: this warm appetizer was quite heavy for me. Although the taste was nice, it wasn't as light as I was expecting.
Hanger Steak and potato gratin: this dish was absolutely wonderful, perhaps a little salty for some but it was fantastic. Generous helping of meat and potato, the caramelised onion and sauce really tied everything together.
Crepe Suzette: The theatricality of flames was excellent but the liqueur melded with the mandarin sauce and made it unpleasant for me. If you enjoy the liqueur, then by all means. However the rest of the dish was pretty good.
Side note: do not order any water(still or sparkling), they charged me eight dollars for it and I thought it was free. It is not. You are better off buying other drinks from there.
Overall it was a good experience.
We ate lunch here today and it was all to a high standard. Service was professional, attentive, and on the mark. Surroundings were nice to look at, engaging and not too loud- even though it was over half full. Food was good quality traditional fare: I had the pepper steak, and dad had the kingfish. Both desserts were good too. All were cooked traditionally- so if you like French food, this is the place for you.

The bone marrow on sourdough causes clamours of excitement when it lands on our table. One slice of toasted sourdough is covered in slices of bone marrow, cooked enough so it wobbles lusciously but not so far that the fat has started to dissolve. Whole confit garlic cloves are gently sweet. There's not a huge amount of parsley on top, but a side of crisp salads helps offset the richness.

A fabulous new French restaurant at the heart of Kensington St! Had such an amazing lunch starting with complimentary Gougères and ending with freshly baked Madeleines. The mocktails were heavenly and a must try for the non-alcohol drinkers. We all decided to have the French onion soup each. After comparing French onion soups from other French restaurants, we quickly came to the conclusion that Bistrot Gavroche topped the list. Perusing the many main dishes on the menu was a struggle as everything looked amazing! We all came across one standout dish, pike fish quenelle with crayfish sauce. Looked so delicate, light and fluffy. The deep taste of the crayfish sauce was just heaven! Such a deceiving little dish... Don't be fooled by the size this dish, you'll soon realise that the deep flavours are enough to get you pretty full. We definitely left the lunch very full and very satisfied. We've vowed to come back with our group of friends and this time definitely leave room for dessert :) The only negative was probably the mammoth menu boards which was awkward to look at because it was so rigid 😅
Mesdames et Messieurs, there is a new French restaurant in Sydney. Bistro Gavroche has opened up in the culinary hotspot Chippendale, right opposite Kensington Street Social. The menu covers French classics like terrine, onion soup and steak frites. For starters, I opt for the Burgundy snails baked in their shells. With the snail tong and picker in my hands, I gingerly tease the snail meat out of their shells. The snails are cooked just right, with the parsley and garlic butter add flavour without overpowering the dish. By the way, if you haven’t tried snails before, they taste like mussels when cooked correctly. If your snails turn out chewy and rubbery, then the chef messed up.
Had a really great long lunch here on Saturday. From the service to the drinks to food to the venue, this fabulous new Sydney restaurant is a must for all food lovers!
How utterly stunning... magic location, superb food, discrete yet attentive & friendly wait staff.
This place is a bit hard to find, parking very scarce.
This could be a new favourite. Could be a fantastic place for a function too.
Had brunch here on a quiet afternoon, they graciously offered us a table near the window. Our favourite was definitely the seafood ravioli, highly recommend even it is not included in the set menu. Having seen a number reviews for the duck, we had high expectations of it, but was slightly disappointed. Flavour was great but lacked the juiciness and aromatics that we expected.
Ended our meal with the Crème Brûlée, definitely was of the best we had, light sweetness with well balanced vanilla fragrance.
Thank you so much allowed us to still have lunch for mother's day even though we were late. We had our elderly mother who can't walk fast. Food awesome experience we will remember as it was beautiful and tasty omg the onion soup and bread we couldn't get enough of. Atmosphere was so lovely not too loud or busy. Service was great no issues anything we asked was answered with a smile 😊
Good impression of a French bistro and well worth a flight of stairs. The setting is on point as is the menu, everything you expect appears on the menu, there’s even a fixe prix menu.
The steak frites was perfectly cooked and the French fries just right. Seasoning was perfect but the bernaise sauce had chilled a little, but there was plenty of it to dip your steak or fries in.
The wine list isn’t too long but I’m sure you’ll find something to your liking, a Beaujolais would have been nice to see though.
Staff are pleasant and efficient.
This was my third visit and I’ll continue to return.
Amazing food! Best duck confit I've ever had. So flavoursome and tender! Snails were delicious as well. Service was friendly and impeccable!
Fantastic french dining experience with a few friends after movie. Nicely decorated space and warm atmosphere. Food is generally good, highly recommend duck drumstick.
Nice cosy atmosphere with very delicious French food. The Duck liver parfait was so delicious, the steak was cooked well to our liking. And my favourite dish there is their dessert -
Crêpes flambéed with Grand Marnier sauce
My husband and I tried Gavroche for the first time as a pre-theatre menu before the Moulin Rouge show. They had a set menu called 'Temptation' and it featured all the very well reviewed dishes like onion soup, escargot and it was only $80pp which is such a great price for a 3 course menu.
We were absolutely blown away by every dish!
Escargot with parsley garlic butter was a 10/10. Escargot was soft and gelatinous but the star of the dish was that rich and buttery sauce. Save up some of your complementary baguette to mop up that sauce!!!
Onion soup with comte cheese and truffle was very flavoursome, loved the cheese and great on a winter's night 9/10
Fish dumplings and lobster bisque with prawns was a very unique dish. The fish dumplings didn't look like dumplings at all, almost like little chicken breast pieces except they were so light, jiggly, melted in the mouth and delicious! The lobster bisque sauce was perfection and the prawns had a nice smoky taste to them too. This was a surprising 10/10 dish for me.
Slow cooked beef brisket in red wine sauce and mash was divine, I'd give it a 9/10. The meat was so tender, pulled away at the fork so easily and the red wine sauce had a bit of a punch which brought out the flavour of the meat so well. The potato puree broke up the dish very nicely.
For dessert I loved the chocolate mousse. Nice and silky mousse texture with crunchy chocolate cookie bits was an 9/10
We also had the crepes with orange sauce flambeed with grand marnier. The flames were impressive and so fun! But the alcohol taste of the grand marnier was a bit strong for my liking (I'm not a big drinker so if you appreciate your alcohol you'd like this) so I give this one an 8/10
Overall, I can't wait to return to Gavroche!!!
