One of my favourite places in Sydney, Chilli Crab Omelette is one of the item that you have to try when you’re having breakfast in Sokyo!
Shoutout to all Sokyo’ staffs, specially Liz and Chase Kojima!
Awesome team!!
Only set menu is available during this period of time, which selected from its signature dishes.
The sashimi of salmon shingiku, miso kingfish and tai goma nori are extremely amazing! The fresh and balanced seasoning, the texture of sashimi deeply impressed me.
Dengakuman may not suitable for my taste. It’s hard to describe the flavor of the toothfish, too sweet for me.
Sushi is quite good while I’m not satisfy with the rice.
desserts are far exceed my expectation, which are extremely stunning. Love the frozen strawberry milkshake inside the Kyoto mochi, love the caramel macchiato that filled with coffee ice cream, coco nibs topped with whiskey foam as well.
BTW, there’re only two impressed dishes for me..... 😂
Only know they not doing omakase after arriving, a little disappointed. Wagyu steak the highlight but the rest pretty average.
Sokyo is one of my favourite restaurants in Sydney and I recommend you try it at least once. Food is absolutely delicious, presentation is picture perfect and service is great.
This time around I had the:
-sashimi platter- You can never go wrong here
-oysters- highly recommend if you like oysters
-maguro tataki- probably my fave dish of the night
-wagyu beef with pumpkin purée- I don’t normally like wagyu but this was exceptional!
-scallop dumpling - ok, so this dish was great If you took off the yuzu infused “bubbles/foam”, otherwise I thought it was an odd combo of flavours (my sister thought so too)
-Queensland roll- yummy
-tofu cheesecake- very nice and innovative dessert. It was not too tofu-y and even though I do not like tofu, I devoured this dish
-Goma street - unpopular opinion, I’ve never really been a huge fan of this dish but it’s one of their popular desserts and my sister quite enjoyed it
Sokyo is constantly booked out throughout the year at The Star and for good reason. It has amazing decor and a lively ambience that is perfect for an exciting night out. It is a definite must try at least once in Sydney. ⠀
⠀
🍽 DISHES SAMPLED ⠀
⭕️ GRILLED SALMON | Mouth-wateringly tasty, the salmon is incredibly flavourful with the perfect seasoning balance. The salmon skin added an amazing punch to the dish and the texture was meltingly soft to the taste. ⠀
⠀
⭕️ TRADITIONAL SASHIMI | The salmon, scampi, scallops, king fish and trout were all so fresh and glistened beneath the light. The king fish needed extra seasoning as it was quite plain on its own. ⠀
⠀
❌ TRADITIONAL NIGIRI | The sushi by comparison was quite average and the wasabi completely overpowered the dish. It definitely was something I didn’t expect from Sokyo and comparable to your everyday sushi train joints. ⠀
⠀
⭕️ WAGYU BEEF | The beef is savoury, juicy and quite tender. However the pieces on the edge of the sliced beef were quite chewy and unfortunately overcooked. I have tasted better wagyu beef at other Japanese fine dining restaurants. ⠀
⠀
⭕️ CHEF’S DESSERT PLATTER | Surprisingly, this was absolute highlight of the meal and I’ve never had such delicious treats before. The Yuzu Soufflé, Sokyo Mochi Ice Cream and Chocolate Fondant were immaculate; I really couldn’t fault them for anything. The whisky foam could be improved for the Caramel Macchiato as it disturbed rather than complimented the taste of caramel and chocolate. The ratio of foam to chocolate was simply too high.

Food is of top notch and so does the service! The highlight of the night is the toro roll, Queensland roll, wagyu steak, and the beef tataki, that really showed the uniqueness of Sokyo. Extremely delicious! The waitress Winnie can speak mandarin and is super helpful when it comes to ordering as this was the first time we visited Sokyo. All dishes that she recommended were really good. It was very busy on Sunday night, but we were served really well with great attention. Definitely gonna visit sokyo again!
Beautiful ambience, service and food. The food is of such a high standard and there is so much variety. My favourites would have to be their sashimi, crispy tuna sushi and the beef tataki! I would definitely go again. It is the perfect spot to go to celebrate a special occasion or a wonderful date night. There is also an amazing drink menu full of delicious cocktails.
Went here with my cousins during NYE 2019 for a quick sashimi fix. Despite the busy crowd, the service provided was great and the ambiance was exceptional!
It was our first time eating here and we can’t wait to go back! Their sashimi’s are so fresh and everything just melts in your mouth. This is probably one of the best Japanese restos in Sydney! 💕
The sashimi platter was absolutely amazing! We loved every piece of sashimi and that dish alone made our night. Also had the cuttlefish tempura and the lamb chops which was also made perfectly. Would definitely come back the next time we visit Sydney!
Food quality fantastic, very great service. But price not worth it

Sokyo is a Japanese inspired restaurant with a Sydney influence. Located at The Star Sydney, Head Chef Chase Kojima and his team produce some of the best dishes I have ever experienced 🌸
If you ever wanna experience fine dining, Sokyo is a must! This place has the best Japanese food that I have ever experienced, everything was ridiculously fresh and amazing 😍
In order of photos, is what we had ordered:
• Sashimi platter - 24 pieces of the chefs choice. Honestly I was never the biggest fan of raw fish, up until that day. It expanded my food choices because everything was super fresh and, soft 🤩
• Edamame beans - steamed and salted. My favourite thing to eat before and in between eating Japanese food.
• Bay bug tempura - this was crazy good!!! The batter wasn't too thick, was super crispy and the meat was soft. Dipped into that spicy mayo an amazing combo!
• Beef robata (front) - this wagyu tri-tip with BBQ teriyaki was yummy too, especially with that glaze.
• Pork robata (back) - ONE OF MY FAVES. The meat was soooo soft that it slid off the stick and melted in my mouth when I ate it. I barely had to chew 🤤
• Scallop - another one of my faves!!! I love scallops so this was a MUST order hehe. The nori butter, tosaka, asparagus and crispy nori completed this whole dish. I wanted more!!!
• Tempura Roll - one of the best sushi rolls I have ever had. The tempura were perfectly balanced and the spicy aioli gave it a little kick 😝
I also ordered the 'Peachy Boyz' cocktail which I forgot what was in it, but it was good too. Went well with what I was eating and was pretty to look at 🙊🍹
Their service, as expected was amazing. They changed our plates after every dish and always checked up on us if we were enjoying everything.
Can't wait to come back again, I think I've discovered a new found love for fine dining. Which may or may not be a good thing 😋
I like the breakfast. Service is good.
Love this place. Efficient and friendly service. Great selection of cocktails and all so delicious!! Food is amazing, each meal has such unique flavours and well presented.
One of my favourite restaurants! Sokyo has been a hatted restaurant for the past 5+ years and for good reason. I dine here a couple times a year, have tried most of the menu and love the food.
Must order dishes for me each time I go are:
- Kingfish miso ceviche
- Pacific oysters
- Beef and pork belly robata
- Tuna crispy rice
For mains the Mareema Duck Breast, Dengakuman and Wagyu Flank Steak are all amazing. The only dish in the Mains I have not enjoyed is probably the Salmon - it is very salty.
Their sushi rolls are also quite average but I usually order them anyway for variety/carbs.
For dessert - Goma Street is a MUST! It is easily one of my all time favourite desserts. The Mochi Ice Cream is also amazing - the strawberry ice cream in it is very refreshing. You can also try the Chefs Dessert Sampler which is a selection of 4 desserts that include both Goma Street and Mochi Ice Cream however I do not really enjoy the other desserts Sokyo has to offer besides these 2
For drinks the Chasing Kojima cocktail is delicious! Especially if you are someone who can't handle the taste of alcohol you can barely taste the alcohol in this. And for mocktails I love the Hibiscus.
Love the ambience at this restaurant also and staff is always amazing!
oh my god this place was amazing !! I highly recommend the duck, pork skewersand the salmon belly nigiri. quite pricey for a uni student but worth it, a lovely experience :D went for our anniversary and they delivered
Beautiful and intimate ambience, lovely place for a special occasion. The beef and lamb skewers are a must try, with the sashimi being buttery and delicious. The nigiri and small sushi rolls are definitely well made, although (unpopular opinion) the Queensland roll and crispy tuna roll are overhyped
Best Japanese food I’ve ever had.
Took my girlfriend there on her birthday and had a variety of dishes from the menu.
They were all absolutely delicious. The presentation is beautiful. the flavour is mind blowing. It’s a premium experience that I will never forget.
I love Sokyo! They make such an amazing food. I liked each dish we ordered.
About the dessert I had Goma Street, it’s caramelised white chocolate and sesame ice cream, so yummy! I couldn’t stop to think about it even the following days.
I’m so much happy when I try new places and I leave satisfied.
I’ll definitely go there again.
Always wanted to come here for dinner. Friends have recommended this place many times. Finally brought the missus for our anniversary. We had such a great time. The food was lovely and the restaurant was so beautiful. We couldn't pick a favourite . Everything on the menu looked good but can honestly say the sashimi is the freshest we have come across. Highly recommended.
Always love having breakfast at Sokyo, delicious as always, seriously the omelettes are awesome. Creamy fluffy! And unagi!! Can’t go wrong. If your staying at the star you have to have breakfast here
Service was warm and professional. Went on a Saturday for lunch, tired lamb skewers, Queensland sushi rolls, some nigiris, all beyond expectation although the seafood platter was a bit ordinary comparing to the others that we ordered. The only down side would be that the seats are a bit too close - we had to listen to a group of people from next table making awkward small talks during our entire lunch time - a bit more privacy would be better.
Great food. Very fresh seafood and nice ambience. A bit underlit at the tables, had a bit of a hard time reading the menu! But all round, it was a great experience. Classy place.
Had an amazing night dining here with my partner. Everything we ordered was delicious, can’t pick a favourite. I wish there was a Sokyo in Melbourne! Will definitely come back next time we’re in Sydney.
The best of the best Japanese food in Australia.
Really like the Maguro tataki, also the wagyu beef cooked perfectly, it just melting in your mouth. The yuzi soufflé will make a lovely happy ending. Every dish I order was tasty and also has a great presentation.
Great customer services
Great food,
Definitely will back. And recommend to friends and families.
LOVE THE AMBIENCE, polite and attentive servers, and the most important LOVE THE FOOD!
For the drinks, we ordered two mocktails: HIBISCUS ($12) - Hibiscus, apple, mint and lime (7/10) and ORANGE ($12) - Orange, passionfruit, orgeat and ginger beer (6/10)
MAGURO TATAKI ($29) – seared tuna, carbonized leek aioli, pickled mushrooms, asparagus and smoked ponzu. So fresh and good! I don’t like maguro but this one is absolutely amazing! What a great starter. (9/10)
DENGAKUMAN ($67) – Miso glazed glacier 51, Japanese salsa pickled cucumber. The cod is so tender and melted in my mouth, the outside is super crunchy! It’s totally worth the price. And the winner in this dish would be the honey soy sauce that overflow inside the fish. Definitely the star dish of tonight’s dinner and the whole vacation so far. (10/10)
Sokyo’s best seller sushi rolls: QUEENSLAND ($22) - Spanner crab, spicy aioli, avocado, soy paper and nigiri: TUNA CRISPY RICE ($20) - Spicy tuna, spicy mayo, crispy Hokkaido “Yumepirica” rice. Highlight of the sushi would be that Queensland as it’s not that spicy and I love the combination ingredients (8/10). Sadly, the tuna crispy rice is too spicy for me and I feel it too simple compare to other dishes. (6/10)
For their robata, I tried the CHICKEN ($11) with yuzu kosho, yakitori and BEEF ($15) - Wagyu tri-tip, caramelised eshallots, BBQ teriyaki. The chicken is simply cooked and nice (7/10), but the beef is over the moon. The wagyu is so tender, sweet and cooked perfectly & beautifully (the shallots are great compliment and had a hint of sweetness as well) (10/10)
Move to the end and my favourite parts of eating ‘DESSERTS’ – choosing two most unique and looks great. YUZU SOUFFLÉ ($17) - Passionfruit Jelly, Crème Fraiche Ice Cream. One of the best dessert for sure. The sour, sweet and complex texture is a champ (9/10)!
And that NIKKA CARAMEL MACCHIATO ($14) - Coffee Ice Cream, Coco Nibs, Whisky Foam. It’s not a cappuccino. It’s totally a dessert with lots of texture and coffee is one of my favourite drink so I’m excited to diggin’ until its super clean (10/10).
Third time here and sokyo never disappoints. Food, service and wine list are amazing. My favs are the kingfish Ceviche, Wagyu beef robata, and miso glazier 51. Had a great night celebrating mum's birthday.
Very Nobu-Esque, a modern approach to Japanese cuisine that doesn’t disappoint. Kingfish ceviche, Miso glacier toothfish, crispy sushi (!), wagyu skewers etc.
Had my birthday lunch in Sokyo. Kingfish sashimi and maguro tataki are must try. Chef special sauces make fresh sashimi more taste. My friend told me Wagyu robata is a little bit dry, so I ordered pork belly instead. I will say it is ok. Ordered two sushi dishes, Queensland and Tuna crispy rice. Both of them are very nice and interesting, especially tuna crispy rice which is with deep fried sushi rice. Overall it is a casual/fine dining worthy to visit. I will definitely go back for sashimi and sushi.
My fave Jap-fushion restaurant. Keep coming back once for a while to dine in despite no special occassion. My fave is spicy tuna crispy sushi. Sashimi platter is always fresh too. Ambience is nice ❤️
Tried Chef Kojima’s Kiyomi at Gold Coast before and have high expectation for Sokyo. Overall it’s very great. The wagyu robata and Crispy tuna rice was outstanding. The chicken robata just okay. The dengakuman however was not worth the price. Have high expectation for it but think the sauce was just too much in terms of flavour. The fish used also not as tender as cod. But still worth the try. The black sesame dessert is must try!
For me I prefer Kiyomi better than Gold Coast.
Food tastes excellent. However portions are not that big and definitely not a place to go if you’re price conscious. Service was mediocre for the price you are paying.
Gotta admit they really deserve 5 stars. From the star to the end the whole experience was perfect.
I was in sydney for business trip and had only one night free to myself. Tried to find a nice restaurant last minute is very hard. Stumbled across Sokyo and decided to give it a shot. Tried to book through Zomato and there were only 9pm slot. Decided to book anyway then half an hour later a really sweet girl called me and said we are not sure if 9pm is too late for your dinner we'd like to offer you an earlier spot if that suits. What kind of service was this!!
Arrived and got greeted straight away. ordered a yuzu drink and it was light and refreshing. Food we ordered quite a few to share. Pork Belly, Scollop, a veggie tempura, a mushroom dish now I don't remember the name but it was so yum!! Then dessert we had the soufflé beautiful flavour!
Service was A level all the way through. Service with a smile and very considerate! LOVE IT!
Fantastic, must be amongst the best Japanese food I’ve had outside of Japan! Another consistently high performer and we’re always welcomed back by old friends at Sokyo, worth booking and waiting for, thanks team Sokyo.
Great food! Absolutely loved the glacier 51 and the duck breast. Would definitely come back here again for both the food and the excellent service.
The Sokyo Breakfast is on every day from 7am to 10.30am. The cost is $38 which includes one coffee, everything from the continental buffet and one item off the a la carte menu. It might sound pretty steep for breakfast but for a special occasion, it is definitely value for money. From the a la carte menu, I chose the Japanese Mushroom Omurice which is an omelette filled with rice and mushroom, topped with Woodland sorrel, daikon and a yuzu miso dressing. The flavours are delicate and it’s truly exquisite. It’s not something you can recreate at home. Now let’s talk about the Continental buffet. Smoked salmon, cured meats and cheeses, congee, fruit salad, yoghurt, cereal and those to die for pastries with distinctly Japanese flavours. I’ll be back!
You must try this at the chefs table
The flavours and texture in each bite were mouthwatering.
I heard the menu has changed recently,
I can’t wait to come back and try the new items
It's hard to find good quality, authentic sushi in Sydney. I couldn't recommend Sokyo enough as the best place to go for sushi in town.
They are a little bit on the pricier side, but everything is super fresh, super high quality and expertly prepared.
I highly recommend the Tuna Crispy Rice Nigiri. This is one of their signatures, and rightfully so. On top is a nice piece of spicy tuna garnished with spicy mayo sitting above deep fried crispy "yumepirica" rice. Everything from flavours and textures blend together like a dream.
Other honorable mentions I would recommend would be the Kurobuta Pork Belly, Queensland Roll and the Caramalised Miso Cod.
Definitely a unique Japanese experience. I wouldn’t recommend if you were after a Fine dining experience, only because the atmosphere gives off a casual bar vibe.
Otherwise, the service was amazing. The food came out promptly and was a very quick dinner. The food was nothing short of what I expected. The sashimi was really fresh, the tempura batter was light and wagyu was cooked to medium rare. The wagyu was soft and tender, with the tuna crispy rice being quite different and unique. Definitely do recommend this dish because it is each to their own!
Overall, Sokyo is definitely a must go to in Sydney if you love Japanese!
Beautiful, simple, sophisticated, and delicious food. Staff are professional offer just proper service - I personally don't like too much masked smile and unnecessary conversation unless it's natural or humorous:) I've been there a couple of times and the food quality is consistent. The traditional Japanese set with the grilled fish is food in heaven - sorry cannot remember the name. The Japanese bowel is also very nice. Generous staff too.
We dined on a Saturday night, it was very busy but service was still quite good. Not the best place to come if you’re looking for quiet fine dining, it felt more like casual dining and tables are set so close to each other that you could hear other people’s conversations right next to you. Food was really good, you can’t miss out on the pork belly skewers and lamb chops. Fresh sashimi platters are generally a must for me at Japanese restaurants, presentation was on point. The Queensland sushi roll was unique, worth trying as I haven’t had this elsewhere before. The Yuzu soufflé was a little too sour but I really liked the dessert platter. Would come back here for the food!

Best Japanese restaurant in Sydney ever! 🙌🏻❤️ Their omakase is worth the waiting list (can be up to 1 year). Freshness and quality of their food is beyond - the from scallop to toro & chutoro and even their tamago 😭❤️
You should order their Goma (black sesame) dessert and their cappuccino-alike dessert!!
Love the food! 5/5 for the food. Service was superb from the concierge to the table service. UNTIL a lady rush us out by reminding us to return the table in 15 minutes when we haven’t ordered the desert. It’s a proper dining not the fast food restaurant so we expected adequate time. A rush feeling is a high turn off for us.
Excellent service and excellent food. None of th me dishes turn me down. The Yuzu Soufflé is a surprise to everyone of us and it just gone in a second. The lamb and the duck breast were my favorite savory dishes of the night. A restaurant that I will definitely come back again.
The staff went above and beyond, from giving us a call to check where we were as the kitchen was closing shortly to being attentive and clearing the table at the completion of each dish. The overall experience was great. The food was freshly prepared, delicious and came out promptly. Will definitely come back!
Food - 5
Ambience - 5
Value for Money - 4.5
Service - 5
This is the 3rd time that we have been to Sokyo. The quality and the standard never fail.
King fish ceviche, wagyu skewers, sashimi are a must.
The staffs were very helpful and made the whole experience really wonderful. We had a 2 year old that had a puking incident on the night. Everyone around us quickly prompted to our needs and assisted in ensuring we were allright. Despite it all, we had a really good night, and the food was really great as always.
Wonderful experience! Super fresh and good quality fish! Welcoming and helping staff. All that you expect from a classy fine dining restaurant.
Japanese fine dining at its best.
Love the ambience and interior.
Food and service is always of high quality.
Always a great place to eat before watching a show at the star.
Dessert always recommended!! Can’t go wrong with the black sesame ice cream!
I absolutely love this place - and it’s clear that most of Sydney agrees with me. Brought my brother here for his birthday on a sunny Sunday morning. The restaurant gets very busy with hotel guests and locals alike so bookings are highly recommended. For $45, guests are entitled to one main (chosen from the ala carte menu) and unlimited selection of Japanese breakfast pastries and breakfast items from the buffet table which is great value for money. There is a decent selection of buffet items to choose from, including muffins, danishes, fresh fruit and salads, Japanese soba and porridge with various toppings. I ordered the seafood set, which included a generous topping of fish roe and chunks of fresh salmon, squid and kingfish with an onsen egg. Service is pleasant although it can be rather noisy during peak breakfast hours. Special props to the delicious Yuzu danish and yuzu muffin with custard, will be back again.
Sokyo is a fine dining Japanese restaurant at the Star. Celebrated mum’s birthday there recently. We enjoyed great food & service, the wait staff even sung mum happy birthday. Sure made mum feel special!
Second visit to Sokyo. This time trying their ala carte menu. I ordered sashimi platter, tuna crispy rice, degakumi, and pork belly skewers. The highlight was definitely the degakumi. Perfectly cooked, soft and sweet at the same time. Absolutely love it😍
