Nice service, lovely place and delicious food. Good for friends gathering or dates. Convenient location, better book in. Affordable price and will visit again.
Subsolo is a Spanish tapas restaurant in Sydney CBD. Most recent time I went was to celebrate a friend’s birthday as he was craving paella. Most food was delicious as always, however the paella was average. The wait staff were friendly and they make a mean sangria.
I have been to Subsolo for my BD dinner 3 weeks ago. Very friendly staff, warm atmosphere and nice decoration. Food was very yum, we chose 3 cuisine from menu. I strongly recommend to have meat skewer in your main, we had 1 lamb skewer and one beef, very tasty.
I spent the last summer in Spain... Lunch times usually meant tapas or a bocadillo with jamon. Which is why I was so excited to try Subsolo. This would be my first flashback to #thatsummerinspain. But before we go on, a Sangria please!
Looking for somewhere to book @ the last minute, and came across Subsolo. Easy booking for 7:30pm for group of friends from work. Staff were very attentive and looked after us well. Food was wonderful, esp. the meat skewers were tender and the platter cold meat/cheese was really good.
We ordered to too much food! Then we had dessert on top of that. By the time we left @ closing, we were full. Only downfall was the music was too loud and we had trouble chatting amongst ourselves. Our table was just next to one of the speakers. Price was reasonable. Just over $60/head - a good night out!
I’ve been there once, food was great last time esp the pork belly tapas was memorable so I went back for it. However it became one of the worst dishes of the night. 😣 The crackling was rubbery & salty, unlike last time, it was crispy & not as salty. They charge $24 for 4 small cubes, not really worth the money. I hate restaurants inconsistent in their food. 😤 The other bad dish we had was the meatballs. It was dry (both outside & inside) and a bit of gamey taste.
Apart from that two tapas, everything was good. The Bacalao salt cod croquettes were tasty & freshly prepared. The chicken fillets & rump was tender with charred taste. Seafood paella was al dente but a tad salty, still bearable.
Great environment, great service. Food is a little pricey. Paella is quite small for the price they charge. The Espetada grills as well, 1 skewer with small chips & salad min costs $34.... 😬
If you like tapas Subsolo is a must.
We went on a weekday and didn’t book- luckily the place is pretty large and most people were at the bar.
The drinks were lovely, I had the best sangria I’ve ever had. The food menu is big and I felt there was something for everyone. The patatas bravas with aioli were amazing!
My only gripe was the slight smell of fat- however I understand that it’s difficult to ventilate an underground restaurant.
I will be back next time I’m in Sydney for sure, there’s a lot more on the menu for me to try!
Went earlier in the evening. Cocktails were decent but not cutting edge. Food was nice but again not my most amazing meal. Service was great though and server was very nice.
My highlight from this underground Spanish restaurant is the paella. The dish comes with very crunchy and crispy edges which I really really liked and to be honest, I've not had paella like this before. From the many starters to choose from, I tried the cheesy croquettes which were very cheesy and delicious.
Great service. Really loved the deli board and zucchini flowers! The meatballs are also highly recommended. Had the Coto de Hayes Tempranillo and it was a great accompaniment to the tapas we chose.
Many people pass this restaurant on a daily basis without realising! Definitely a twist up on everyday life to try Spanish cuisine and was not disappointed. The paella was delicious and made in 20 minutes, which is quite a feat for the slow cooked meal. The ambience was dimly lit and romantic but at the same time appropriate for a work occasion or with close friends.
Definitely the best Spanish Restaurant in Sydney. The service is amazing and the food is to die for.Amazing cocktails and the Red sangria is a must. I also recommend Coco loco and Granada. Yummy Yummy. To recommend food is the hardest part because I see everything so full of flavor and love, but of course, I have my favorites :)Zucchini Flowers, lamb salad, paella balls, manchego croquette and also bacalao croquette.I love seafood so I will definitely choose the seafood paella and the peri peri espetada it is to die for. You should try this place its great, very sexy and lovely environment.
We were a large group and Subsolo were amazing.
Each of us ordered a tapas each and then we added a few Paella and a couple of Espatada mixed grills.
It worked out to be $30 per person and we had ordered
enough food to fill our large table of big fat men. lol
Every thing we ate was amazing. The flavours were devine. All of us were happy with every plate that came out.
The peppers filled with Lamb ragout was one of my favourites as was the Lamb Shoulder salad with mint and pomegranate molasses.
Food came out in a timely manner, with no long delays. All the staff always seemed to have big smiles and helpful, they could of maybe come to the table to ask for drinks maybe a couple of times more. Cocktails were over priced, in my opinion, and it did stop me from ordering any. The wine was a tad pricey for the bottle but it is to be expected and didnt stop me and a couple of others sharing a few bottles.
Would i go back? Hell YES!
Would i recommend Subsolo to others? Without hesitation.
Good Spanish tapas and ambience. The food is well cooked and great for sharing. The sauce from the garlic prawns is just perfection. I find this venue great for groups.
A friend mentioned going out to a Spanish place the other night and it just stuck in my mind so went through Zomato to find a good place above 3.5 in the city and this came up. Came here for lunch on a Tuesday and it was pretty quiet. The setting is really nice, loved the ambience. Ordered...
Sangria! Yes, I always associate Subsolo with a really refreshing (but also alcoholic) sangria. But that was unfair of me. The food are also superb! I love the crunch of the skin of patatas bravas and how it is accented by their special spicy tomato sauce. I love how soft and tender their fried calamaris are. I love how their paellas take me back to Spain and wanting to be the last to take a serving of paella because I will get the toasted paella rice. And that juicy meaty goodness of their grilled meat! Now I'm hungry again.
Great food and service at this stylish and moody restaurant/tapas/wine bar. We enjoyed a selection of tasting plates including lamb salad with mint, marinated figs and pomegranate ($17), sardines with saffron aioli (cheesy manchego croquettes ($18 for 4 pieces) and paella balls with chicken and pork chorizo on salsa verde ($16). Finished off with that Spanish classic dessert of Crema Catalana. Great flavours and textures and decently sized tapas.

Came here for lunch and had a selection of tapas. The highlights included the Spanish Vegetarian Tortilla ($15) and the Paprika Rubbed Rump Steak ($18). The food is delicious. Unfortunately they dropped the ball on service today. We were sat down quickly and order taken promptly however we waited 1/2 hour for our food (only after we prompted our waiter as all tables around us, including ones that had arrived after us had received their meals). The waiter was apologetic and got the food to us within 10 minutes as we were time constrained. Nothing further was offered for not having putting our order through the first time. KatrinaELewis
Went there for my friend's birthday. The restaurant was in basement level. We were assigned toa corner table. The restaurant floor was very busy, packed with customers. The bar staff also ran off their feet as new orders kept coming in. Yet the customer service quality was still in excellent standard.
The restaurant was aesthetically decorated, the restaurant floor was dim but it created this warm and romantic atmosphere. The toilets had flowers on the bench top and it's quite clean.
Our waitress Esther, provide us with water and menus. She asked for her recommendations. So we ordered 3tapas and 2 mains. Tapas came 1st which was Jamon, Fried squid and chorizo something with black pudding: Nice and hot. Their olive bread was amazing~
We had also ordered some cocktails, it tasted wonderful. Excuse me for losing count of how many I had.
For mains we ordered the pork belly on a long skewer served with salad and chips. And a seafood Spanish rice. (I am terrible in remembering names)
It was well presented, tasty, fresh and hot.
The pork belly was so tender, the meat can fall off just by sticking your fork in. The edges of pork skin crackles which gives this diversity of texture.
LOVE IT! LOVE IT! LOVE IT!
The seafood rice was well flavoured, not as salty as the ones I've had in other places. It's served in a cast iron pan which kept it warm. The rice was cooked just right, scallops and fish were not over cooked. Yummy.
Then we had the birthday cake that we've bought from else where. The staff was singing along.
Esther came and taught us some Spanish. We had a really really pleasant evening. The manager greeted us as we leave, along with other floor staff.
The supreme customer service really blew me off my toes. I am coming back for sure!
We came here to celebrate my friends birthday over lunch and we walked out full and happy. I love the romantic ambience of the restaurant and we found the staff professional and friendly.
The food we ordered were tasty but a bit heavy. It didn't help that we over ordered! But we shared their paella balls, meatballs, pork belly and apple, zucchini flowers, tofu & haloumi & roasted veg dish as well as the chicken thigh skewers that came with a salad and crispy chips.
The highlight dishes being the pork belly (love good crispy skin) and the chicken thigh which had a good chilli kick. We were all too full for dessert but I will be back!
Went here with a group of friends, I quite like the atmosphere of this place as it's underground and has its own bar. For good we ordered:
- zucchini flowers: these were nice but not amazing. They had a blue cheese like filling, I prefer the traditional feta/spinach filling personally. Plus they were quite small. The cheese flavor just seemed a bit strong.
- peppers filled with mince: very tasty I really liked these, they tasted like chorizo and were quite smokey
- garlic prawns: LOVED the sauce for this and couldn't stop dipping my bread in it (actually preferred the bread and sauce to the prawns!) but the prawns were decent sized and succulent also. Note this is a creamy garlic sauce
- chicken skewers: enjoyed this dish. The glaze on the chicken was spicy and also sweet, served with a nice salad and chips
- roast potatoes with aioli: lacked flavor especially with the aioli sauce I just couldn't taste much. Could have done better here
- churros are not good. They are served with that fake chocolate sauce rather than real chocolate...that says enough. They're also really thick and doughy
Overall a pleasant meal and would return, however not for dessert.
Been here twice for firm lunch and once for dinner with a friend. Food is great - love the mushroom and halloumi entree, meat skewers, paella and churros. Restaurant interior is very nice w carpet and high back leather chairs. Bit pricy. Be prepared for a heavy meal as most dishes aren't healthy.
Went back when I was 1st year with some high school group friends, and the price of the food astounded our budgets. We immediately thought of turning back, but decided to order sparingly with the tapas since it didn't make us full anyway.
That being said, staff were friendly, the dim basement styled restaurant gave a sort of fine dining experience. Consequently, we ordered the spanish meatballs, snails, trio of chorizos, pork belly, with chicken and seafood paella. The tapas ranged around $18/each and the paella around $36/each. So you can imagine the death of our wallets!
Needless to say, the food was nice, but probably not advised for a uni student bday outing.
I love tapas and the guys from this place know how to prepare them. Well, all the food is pretty amazing and prepared with care and professionalism. It's not even expensive at all, moderate prices for delicious food is quite the good value.
A lovely venue for a night out with friends. The tapas were delicious, albeit a bit too cheesy. The seafood paella was great. The only dish that was unsatisfactory was the zucchini flowers. I was looking forward to them.
Great place for groups of friends, family and couples. Came here on a Saturday night with a group of 4 and the service was excellent. The food was amazing and I loved how they served the dishes individually instead all at once where the table gets cluttered. Also, the ambience and atmosphere was amazing.
Really good. Everything we ordered was tasty, fresh and good portions. Warm staff and a moody atmosphere, great date or group dinner choice.
Food was great. Nothing spectacular, just simple, tasty, eats. Cocktails were awesome, and the staff were very friendly. Service was a little slow, but on a busy Saturday night with 2 large tables, it is expected. All in all, a good experience
Subsolo is a Spanish restaurant located in the basement of King St, just around the corner from the main shopping precinct.
They have an extensive menu and consistently above average food. My favourites include the croquettes, lamb salad and the paella. The sangria is not bad either! As are their cocktails - great selection!
This is a place for a bit of a fancy meal (however I would not rate this as 'fine dining') but there is a good ambience and comfortable seating. The tables are well spaced apart for privacy and there are little areas that can be cordoned off for parties.
Service is quite attentive although you might have to try and wave them down. On the pricey side however you could reduce your total bill with 25% off with the Entertainment Book's Gold Card.
Entering a very nice space downstairs off King street the evening looked promising. We had a variety of tapas dishes all of which were distinct and full of plenty of flavour. Highlight was the peppers stuffed with lamb ragout with the mushrooms, spicy potatoes, beef and zucchini flower dishes all making for an enjoyable meal. Cocktails were good also. Only let down was the service which was promised much with introductions and a commitment to look after us for the evening but was not much more than bringing the food to the table. We gave up on the second drink and walked to the till to pay. No reason not to go and enjoy some good food though. It is Sydney.
Recent date of visit: 1 October 2015
Good Spanish tapas and great atmosphere. Food has always been quite consistent for the three times I have been here. All dishes were flavoursome and satisfied my cravings of meat and carbs. The churros and ice cream is always a nice way to end the meal.
Love the underground vibe and sexy feels of this little tapas joint in the inner city
Great range of upper end tapas and churassco. Great for groups or a date night !
Love this place! Spanish tapas! Really cool funky vibe, buzzing with life! Food and service is amazing! A little on the pricey side tho. Highly recommend, especially in a group!
Always love coming here. Food is consistent and tasty. Good wine and cocktail list. Great to dine with a big group so you can try all their dishes. Love the paella.
Sauté your taste buds at one of my favourite Spanish restaurants in Sydney with a selection of fragrant and super tasty tapas, giving your palate a whirlwind of flavours. Melt into the cheesy manchego croquettes as the creamy and mouthwatering cheese oozes into your mouth with every crunchy bite. Season with the flavoursome spanish vegetarian tortilla; a stack of roasted vegetables sandwiched between flat layers of potato and complemented with a lightly tangy sauce.
Subsolo is a great middle price point CBD restaurant. I've dined twice as a 2pax and one time I booked a group of 20 for a hen's party. Love it! The atmosphere is great, not too noisy and you feel like you are far away from the hustle and bustle of the city. It's amazing what being underground and having nice furnishings can do. Friendly service, big portions and excellent value for money.
Stand outs: the meatballs an the churros filled with dulce de leche and served with chocolate sauce. Best churros in the city.
Yummy wonderful Spanish food.
We ordered Tapas of zucchini flowers, spicy potatoes, roast vegetable tofu salad and garlic prawns. Zucchini flowers - yummy, potatoes - massive serve, roast veggies - hmmm not for so amazing and garlic prawns - delicious. We then had a main of the rump steak (all mains come with chips and salsa to share) just beautiful food. Topped off with a sangria it was a wonderful dining experience.
Did take a little while, initially for some of the dishes to arrive but well worth the wait!
An office favourite for corporate get togethers . Fantastic tapas , interesting wine list and really good service for big groups. Surprisingly well priced given the quality of food and location.
Great for a birthday dinner and the set menu is fantastic value. Sangria is the best in Sydney, and the Paella is authentic. Would definitely be back.
There's no doubt that Subsolo is the most classy Spanish Restaurant in Sydney. Fantastic venue, Sangria is one of the best in town and good Tapas. However, the food doesn't have the OMG factor. I.e. Paella was ok. The Peri Peri Chicken was the most unique dish on the table. Great display and has pleasantly hot flavour. Highly recommended dish. I give this place 4 bears.
Fantastic Spanish/Portuguese tapas restaurant that is situated underground, great place to go for group functions or a fancy night out with friends. As I dined here with a group of about 10 peeps, we ordered the set menu option #1 ($52 a head) which consisted of meatballs, salt and pepper squid, delicious Espetada-grilled skewers (pork belly, steak and peri-peri chicken.. DROOLING), a few extra side dishes and Spanish churros w/ chocolate sauce and ice cream. Not bad for $52!!
Service was really good, even though at first it was slow getting our table (we booked for 8.30pm but had to wait about 20 minutes as the people sitting at our table were still there!) but after that the people working here really attended to us and were very fast with food & drinks.
Also one thing to note when coming here with a group, is that glasses of Sangria drop from $15 to $10 each, which isn't noted on the menu but it is noted on the website.. So just make sure to clarify this when you order. Sangria tasted great with loads of fruit packed in it, only downside is they don't offer jugs of Sangria, you can only buy per glass.
Overall each dish satisfied my taste buds, the Portuguese grilled skewers were the stand out for me.. It even had bread underneath the dripping skewers which soaked up all the juice from the meat for you to eat at your pleasure. Yum!!
This place is absolutely brilliant! Delicious food, great variety, wonderful staff.. My favourite would have to be the stuffed zucchini - I recommend this place to anyone looking for a great place to catch up with a bunch of friends :)
Spice your appetite with delightful Spanish flavours at one of my favourites hidden underground along King St, Town Hall. Simmer your taste buds with a refreshing glass of red wine or their deliciously tasty sangria to be enjoyed in their dim-lit relaxed and romantic environment! Dip into a taste of various flavoursome tapas (made for sharing of course) or select one of their set menus giving you a pre-selection of delectable dishes at great value.
#kningjaeats spanish food. I really like this place for Spanish food. It has really great vibes and the food is good plus the drinks are even better! It is on the more pricey side but there's great variety and with tapas being the bulk of the menu, it is great to have so many options to try when sharing with a group.
Loved it!. Cannot fault this place! Food and sangria was fantastic- Had one of the set menus. Atmosphere was awesome. Super quick, lovely service. Already recommended it to my friends and hope to return one day soon.
The restaurant and bar has trendy decor and warm ambient lighting, the waitstaffs are friendly and polite. Overall a very Spanish experience.
I first heard of Subsolo about a year ago. Someone I knew had dined there and was enjoying telling me about the great Creme brûlée she had that night. So it went on my 'to dine' list! Subsolo is located a block away from my workplace. Recently on one weeknight I took the opportunity to check it out when a good friend was in town on a work trip. It is a Spanish restaurant and had a cavernous look and feel to the surrounds. It was quite dark and felt quite spacious. After thoroughly perusing the menu, we decided on sharing all the plates. Sardinas Fritas - fresh fillets of flash-fried sardines with saffron aioli. Normally I wouldn't have even looked at ordering this dish but AK was keen and I thought why not! Well, I am glad I did agree to it. It was a lovely dish, the sardines were lightly fried and lightly salted and went well with the aioli. Croquetas de Manchego - cheesy Manchego croquettes. These croquettes are not for the faint hearted. If you are not into strong cheese, I would su
Its hard to find a good Spanish restaurant in Sydney that serves Tapas. We decided to give Subsolo in Sydney a try. Subsolo is on the Wynyard side of Sydney city, near the MLC centre. I have been told that Subsolo in Spanish means "The basement". Subsolo is indeed underground, down a set of stairs. The restaurant decor had an almost Oriental/New Yorker feel to it. The restaurant was part bar, but mostly was occupied with tables and chairs. There was a reasonable atmosphere and the restaurant/bar was quite packed.
...Trio of Garlic Mushrooms. I loved this! It has and exotic mix of mushrooms yum.

Spanish is not a cuisine I'm very familiar with, but I'm not sure of the reasons for my diffidence. Every chance I've had of eating Spanish food, I've mostly brushed it off, even though I generally enjoy tapas and other Spanish delights such as chorizo, jamon, and various seafood. Perhaps there were always 'better' options available or I'm not as adventurous as I think I am. In any case, we made a decision to try Subsolo in the centre of town after reading favourable reviews.
I didn't have uber high expectations because in my mind, I was still thinking 'meh, meat skewers'. The chicken fillet really surprised me - they were just amazingly succulent with just the right amount of that open flame grill taste without coming accross as burnt. The miso contained some rump, which didn't leave a huge impression but was still quite good. At the top was a piece of 'morcilla' aka black pudding. Dani
At last I can bring you evidence of one of my fave meals I’ve had recently. I brought my boyfriend here recently for his birthday and to make it a little special left all photographic equipment at home. Halfway through the meal sensing my excitement at ho
BEST food in Sydney!!. Lovely tasty food, great friendly service, awesome atmosphere, and the price is suitable for the high standard of food served. Highly recommend this restaurant!!
AWESOME!!!. I need to preface this by saying we had our wedding reception here 5 years ago as it was our favorite restaurant. With kids and everything we sadly hadn't been back since. It was our 5 year anniversary last night and we returned. So happy to say it is still thriving! Service amazing, atmosphere perfect and food is to die for: pork belly, Paella, Calimari, beef skewer were stand outs but there wasn't an average dish in sight. A true stayer of the Sydney scene, go there you won't be disappointed.
My husband and I ate here a few weeks ago.. We arrived at 10pm so were expecting them to say sorry.. Kitchens closed.. But they welcomed us in. We had a great meal, wine and great service, and they didn't try to rush us out either.. We will definitely go back again.
