It's funny, the place looks like a fish and chip shop, the staff are young and affable and the decor is not much but the food is the best fish cooking in Sydney. It's excellent, heaps of variety, reasonably priced, creative and surprises you every time. We went there last night and the comment was 10 out of 10 from our friends. This place is a real hidden jewel, I really haven't found any fish restaurant that comes near it.
I worked with this culinary genius for for a few years, he is one of the best, I can only recommend Hans Mohrs passion for food for you to enjoy his cooking technique, try you won't be disappointed.
The place does not have any ill to be mentioned. The food is great, the ambience is amazing though not that huge, the staff is courteous and professional, the quantity and quality is up to the mark.
Somethings definitely fishy about this place...
We went to Mohr Fish with 30% off on the Fork which made the food worth it, especially since seafood is usually more expensive. Lovely service, lovely food!
The staff were very helpful and explained the different types of fish, sorted by whether you like it soft or hard, less fishy or more fishy. I opted for the Monkfish (soft and more fishy) which was really delicious, it was soo soft and paired really well with the avocado salsa and mash - YASS would recommend($25)! The other dishes were also good, including the BBQ Barramundi with tomatoes, capsicum, green beans and gnocchi ($23), Sichuan pepper soft shell crab papaya salad ($22) and Squid salt peppered with chips and salad ($20). Also they give you free bread at the beginning and who doesn’t like free bread?
Mohr Fish please!
My first visit in many years and I'm glad they stuck around for so long. Mohr pitches itself as a casual funky upmarket fish place but the takeaway prices aren't much more than a suburban fisho - $10 for perfectly cooked battered fish plus salad or chips, or just $6.50 for a fish cake burger. Then there's lots of fancier dishes (I liked the soft shell crab papaya salad) and full fish meals. Even though it's casual, the eat-in prices are rather more than takeaway but they're still very reasonable for the quality and fairly large portions.
Don't Believe The Hype
+4
I got the fish and chips take away for about $10. Was very tasty and generous serving for the price. I would go back for sure.
Ive also tried the dumpling soup with homeade dumplings . They are pretty impressive dumplings with whole prawns inside (disclaimer you have to like fishy dumplings to enjoy these) and also a nice broth.
Ordered Flathead, Steamed Mussels, and Fishpie.
Fishpie was really good - must try.
Steamed Mussels was alright.
Friendly staff as well!
The place is bit small.
Came here for lunch with a friend of mine. They are usually known for dinner but I was always curious what the food was like. It is a small and comfy little restaurant. I ordered half a dozen of oysters which was nice and fresh. Also ordered a seared salmon over Bok Choy. I enjoyed them every much and would definitely come again. I would recommend you try to go during dinner time instead. A good place for any one on one kind of dinniing experience.
Went for the first time for dinner on a LivingSocial deal. The place is quite small, there are a few small tables and a bar counter with high chairs. Service was friendly, the mains came out a bit slowly, maybe because were a few take-away orders. The grilled scallop entree was 3 scallops in shells, looked promising but the scallops were tasteless, which was strange - reminded me of the pre-soaked prawns that you get at chinese restaurants that are translucent and plumped up but tasteless. Fish mains and dessert were good but not outstanding. I did not think that the seafood was particularly fresh, though nothing was off either.
Mohr Fish is the place to be to indulge in all your seafood cravings.
This place runs full capacity on any given evening. And it's not too bad during lunch hours either.
With a decent drinks list to complement the menu you can't go wrong.
My go to dish is the Deep Fried Crab Papaya Salad with extra chilly on the side! It's amazingly light and delicious.
This is NOT fine dining - just FINE FOOD!
Both the oysters and fish fillets are very fresh and yum! The rest' is a tiny one in the Surry Hill vicinity. However, on Saturday, a lot of people go there for take-away fish and chips. Please be reminded that fish and chips are allowed for take-away only. For dine-in, more pricy fish has to be picked.
We order here regularly when we're in the mood for super tasty fish and chips. We usually get the fried squid with salad too. We also like the dori and grapes. Everything on the menu is kept simple fresh and tasty- That's why we keep coming back:)
Located in a corner location, the restaurant is light, open and intimately friendly. Staff are polite and service is prompt. We had a standard F&C and a fish pie. Serves were a good size and food was extremely tasty! Coffee was good too! Price is not cheap but ok for the quantity and quality.
Finally had a chance to visit here after they relocated. Highly recommend the grilled Dory with grapes and fish pie 😋. Quality of the food remains high, but the table service was slightly off for a relatively quiet night. Overall though, will recommend!
Love this place. Mohr moved to a new, bigger location but still on the same street. The new hub has more seating capacity and better interiors. As for the food, I highly recommend Bouillabaisse and/or their grilled Scallop to start; and then go with their awesome mains like Dory with grapes, almonds and gratin potatoes or their Rockling with asparagus, hollandaise sauce and chips. My partner is an avid fan of Mohr and talks highly of the memories he had with this restaurant. With friendly and attentive team to compliment their delicious dishes- what more can you ask for?! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Wife and I chose Mohr Fish at random during a cool Sunday wander - not a bad choice.
Bouillabaisse was my wife's entree (loved it) and the herbed scallops for myself (very nice once some of the herbs were scraped off ... just too much for me).
Mains were the monkfish and a fish pie which were thoroughly enjoyed (although the mash with monkfish was quite lumpy).
With a wine each it was $120 lunch which we were okay with given the lovely flavours.
Also, a call out for the attentive service. Yeah it was a quiet day but still appreciated. 😴
We'll certainly be back and hopefully the mash will be smoother next time.
Recommended. 👍
Great new larger space for this institution. Portions are generous and you never leave hungry. Best fish cakes we've had in a long time!
I had read the reviews on this place and thought I would give it a try. I was not disappointed. Great fresh food, good service! It's a casual little place but if you're less about the decor and more about the quality of food this place is for you. I ordered the Bouillabaisse, Scallops, Salt & Peppered Squid and Papaya Salad for two people was satisfying. Thank you to the staff at Mohr will be back again.
My friends all had the seafood and they all said how marvellous and beautiful it was. I don't eat seafood but when the waiter heard this he asked the chef if he had something else ( not on the menu). The chef prepared the most delicious chicken burger just for me, with chips and salad. The service was brilliant and faultless. Thank you so much for a delightful evening.
We have been to Mohr Fish for many years but the first time at their new and much larger restaurant down the road.
We shared a Szechuan Salt and Pepper prawns on a bed of papaya salad as the entree. We then had the fish pie and the Monk fish as mains.
Beautifully cooked, flavoursome and generous serves. Our waiter also couldn’t have been more helpful and polite. Pleasure to give them 5/5 for the wonderful meal
