It's funny, the place looks like a fish and chip shop, the staff are young and affable and the decor is not much but the food is the best fish cooking in Sydney. It's excellent, heaps of variety, reasonably priced, creative and surprises you every time. We went there last night and the comment was 10 out of 10 from our friends. This place is a real hidden jewel, I really haven't found any fish restaurant that comes near it.
I worked with this culinary genius for for a few years, he is one of the best, I can only recommend Hans Mohrs passion for food for you to enjoy his cooking technique, try you won't be disappointed.
Very nice seafood and well priced wine list. Great place for a quick meal before the theatre.
I was a regular every saturday lunch at their Top Ryde shop for several years but unfortunately that shop closed a couple of years ago.
I just visited their original shop at Surry Hills today. And the chef remembered me!
Best fish burger ever. Great food and great people. I hope Mohr Fish continue for at least another 22 years!
Good fish! The best seafood cafe we been! Flathead fish n chip! Yum yum!
I was staying in Surry Hills and wanted to be sure I got fish & chips in before I left. It was just a few blocks from where I was staying, and everything was excellent! I'm not a fish and chips connoisseur, but these were some of the best I have ever had! Great ending to my visit!
Fantastic food! Tiny venue (good luck getting a seat after 7), and the menu above the counter isn't too descriptive but the food is amazing. Tried the prawn & fish dumplings served with greens on the strength of other reviews and wasn't disappointed, tasty & generous servings. Fish pie main was the ultimate comfort dish. A normally picky dinner companion devoured the fish cakes with gusto and declared the texture a potential masterclass to restaurants that shall remain unnamed producing rubbery fare. Said companion's tarakihi was tender and perfectly cooked. Desserts (apple rhubarb crumble and lemon tart) also nice, but it's the fish dishes that really shone. Service was efficient, the one girl looking after the front of house. Looking forward to a return visit.
Best fish n chip! You can choose from fresh oyster to golden fish n chip! Yum yum yum!
Great fish ! Great service! Yum yum yum
Had Squid with Chips and Fried Garlic Prawns with Chips and salad was absolutely amazing and my kids said the best seafood they have ever had
The place does not have any ill to be mentioned. The food is great, the ambience is amazing though not that huge, the staff is courteous and professional, the quantity and quality is up to the mark.
Somethings definitely fishy about this place...
We went to Mohr Fish with 30% off on the Fork which made the food worth it, especially since seafood is usually more expensive. Lovely service, lovely food!
The staff were very helpful and explained the different types of fish, sorted by whether you like it soft or hard, less fishy or more fishy. I opted for the Monkfish (soft and more fishy) which was really delicious, it was soo soft and paired really well with the avocado salsa and mash - YASS would recommend($25)! The other dishes were also good, including the BBQ Barramundi with tomatoes, capsicum, green beans and gnocchi ($23), Sichuan pepper soft shell crab papaya salad ($22) and Squid salt peppered with chips and salad ($20). Also they give you free bread at the beginning and who doesn’t like free bread?
Mohr Fish please!
My first visit in many years and I'm glad they stuck around for so long. Mohr pitches itself as a casual funky upmarket fish place but the takeaway prices aren't much more than a suburban fisho - $10 for perfectly cooked battered fish plus salad or chips, or just $6.50 for a fish cake burger. Then there's lots of fancier dishes (I liked the soft shell crab papaya salad) and full fish meals. Even though it's casual, the eat-in prices are rather more than takeaway but they're still very reasonable for the quality and fairly large portions.

I got the fish and chips take away for about $10. Was very tasty and generous serving for the price. I would go back for sure.
Ive also tried the dumpling soup with homeade dumplings . They are pretty impressive dumplings with whole prawns inside (disclaimer you have to like fishy dumplings to enjoy these) and also a nice broth.
Ordered Flathead, Steamed Mussels, and Fishpie.
Fishpie was really good - must try.
Steamed Mussels was alright.
Friendly staff as well!
The place is bit small.
Came here for lunch with a friend of mine. They are usually known for dinner but I was always curious what the food was like. It is a small and comfy little restaurant. I ordered half a dozen of oysters which was nice and fresh. Also ordered a seared salmon over Bok Choy. I enjoyed them every much and would definitely come again. I would recommend you try to go during dinner time instead. A good place for any one on one kind of dinniing experience.
Went for the first time for dinner on a LivingSocial deal. The place is quite small, there are a few small tables and a bar counter with high chairs. Service was friendly, the mains came out a bit slowly, maybe because were a few take-away orders. The grilled scallop entree was 3 scallops in shells, looked promising but the scallops were tasteless, which was strange - reminded me of the pre-soaked prawns that you get at chinese restaurants that are translucent and plumped up but tasteless. Fish mains and dessert were good but not outstanding. I did not think that the seafood was particularly fresh, though nothing was off either.
Mohr Fish is the place to be to indulge in all your seafood cravings.
This place runs full capacity on any given evening. And it's not too bad during lunch hours either.
With a decent drinks list to complement the menu you can't go wrong.
My go to dish is the Deep Fried Crab Papaya Salad with extra chilly on the side! It's amazingly light and delicious.
This is NOT fine dining - just FINE FOOD!
Both the oysters and fish fillets are very fresh and yum! The rest' is a tiny one in the Surry Hill vicinity. However, on Saturday, a lot of people go there for take-away fish and chips. Please be reminded that fish and chips are allowed for take-away only. For dine-in, more pricy fish has to be picked.
We order here regularly when we're in the mood for super tasty fish and chips. We usually get the fried squid with salad too. We also like the dori and grapes. Everything on the menu is kept simple fresh and tasty- That's why we keep coming back:)
We went on a Saturday at about 4pm. It was quiet so we only waited about 5 mins for our food. We got takeaway as it was only $10.50. A bargain for what we got. (2 pieces of fish, mash or chips and salad.) Good size pieces of fish!! And I was really hungry. The mash was really good. Not too buttery. The fish was perfectly fried. The batter was light and crispy. Couldn't fault it. I had heard mixed reviews for this place so we were not sure but would highly recommend the deep fried fish /chips or mash for $10.50 you get a bargain and tasty fish. Sometimes when you get fish it has that off fishy taste. Didn't get that at all. Thumbs up from me.
Happy Mardi Gras Sydney!! ! 🦄🌈🍀🐬
Quick flyover The Big Fuzz before heading for some overdue travel, and as usual, absolutely had to speed to Mohr Fish on arrival. Schedule yesterday was Sydney Aiport --> Central Station --> Mohr Fish --> family+Singstar Night --> Peru.
Didn't even make it to the parade just a street away from my sister's Surry Hills place whoops.
That's how important and viscerally vital Mohr Fish is to me! If you've had their inhumanely crisped beer battered fish and crackling calamari you'll know just what I mean.
Hey kids, you don't need no drugs if you've got Mohr Fish!

Xoxo see you in a few weeks 💚💙🌈
What a cozy unexpected find in Surry Hills. Almost feels like a American dinner, with tasty home cooked meals. I went for a entree size of mussels (I'd already had lunch - serving was still much bigger than I expected for $16), and my boyfriend had grilled fish of the day. Great affordable wine menu. Fantastic helpful service. Highly recommended
A fish and chip shop that goes the extra yard, or yards. Good takeout of beer battered or grilled fish or a grilled fish burger. Chips aren't anything spectacular but a great, more expensive, sit down menu of various seafood dishes. Stylish corner location with a classy, subdued atmosphere, a wild looking chef and nice staff.
The prawn & fish dumplings are the standout dish. But the daily fish is good too. Always different. Friendly service. And has been a popular spot for over 10 years now
Best fish and chips in sydney. Extremely crispy, light and non greasy fish, can really taste the beer batter. Fish dumplings also recommended. Option of mash and or salad in any combination (surcharge for chips/mash and salad). Tried the scallops, a little small but tasted great. Very small seating area though, so would recommend take away if possible.

Service was friendly and knowledgable. The food was good and well cooked, presentation could've been better.
Overall a little pricy for what you get but still left pleased with the food I received
I highly recommend the grilled fish which was around $10. Not too bad in price. It was grilled perfectly and so delicious. I had it with a salad and mash but you can get it with chips too. Definitely coming back for work day lunches. The fish portion here is smaller than the De Costi's at Greenwood so if you have a big appetite maybe order a side as well.
Reasonable Price for good fresh fish!
Rockling fish was to die for !!! It's soft, flaky and so nicely paired with the hollandaise sauce ! ;
BBQ Barramundi was really just okay. The fish was pretty dry and the sauce would be better if they toned down the acidity.
If i have the chance I would definitely come back again.
PS: The lady staff was really friendly and attentive. Excellent service! I'm a happy customer :)
It costs quite a bit more to eat in, so this is my longtime takeaway fish shop, it's reliably good.
$9.50 for battered fish & mashed potatoes (nice change from chips), both well seasoned & the two fish pieces with crunchy golden batter as tasty as it looks. Not huge pieces, but very satisfying with nice tartare sauce included.
The risotto contained a vast range of seafood - barramundi, salmon, squid, prawns and mussels. You get a piece of seafood with literally every single bite, that's how generous their servings were! This was demolished in no time as it was absolutely beautiful in terms of cooking and seasoning.

Nostalgia lives on at Mohr Fish, a humble Surry Hills corner takeaway tiled in white and powder blue. Mohr Fish shopfront Mohr Fish menu There's a distinct price difference between eating in and takeaway, and we notice that most locals ring ahead to place their order, then turn up ten minutes later to pick up their lunch. Fish and chips will set you back $22 if you pull up a chair, dropping to $8.50 if you exit the premises. Complimentary bread and butter But there's something to be said for perching on a stool and watching the world pass on by through the shopfront windows. We thoughtfully chew on a basket of complimentary bread and butter as we alternate between looking outside and observing the sole chef in the kitchen get through the lunchtime rush. Bouillabaisse $15.50 Although usually thought of as a wint
Go to local takeaway fish & chip
shop. Love the fish dumplings! The eat-in meals are great but quite expensive - not really justified by the atmosphere.
The great fish!. I was dinning with my friend in this busy crowed restaurant last Friday.
their fish prawn dumpling is great for entrée, for the main we choose rockling, they recommended.
was so great! very great favour and satisfying quality and quantity!!!! highly recommend!
Absolute gem!. I have been going to MF for a while now and have never once been disappointed. Go here if you want a quick homecooked style meal from the sea. I've pretty much tried everything on the menu but my favourite would have to be the barramundi with chilli chutney and mash. The choice of fish changes daily depending on what they have picked up from the markets. They are more than happy to let you mix and match the fish with different sauces/sides so don't hesitate to ask! The service is impeccable thanks to veteran Jenny and co. If you're lucky you may even get a special MF keyring on exit! It's also BYO which gives it major bonus points from me.The only negative I can think of is that it has become more and more popular of late - just means you may have to duck in to Shakespears over the road for a pre dinner beverage or two while waiting, could be worse...
Love this Seafood Joint for over a decade now. Unpretentious seafood restaurant with friendly staff. The fish is always fresh and cooked perfectly. Fried baby octopus is absolutely delicious. Keep a look out for the dill mayo which goes well with everything.
Fantastic experience! Great food, prompt, attentive and friendly service from our delightful waitress and the fish was sublime. Treat yourself.
Yum. I love this place! The boullebaisse is amazing and the prawn dumplings are a taste sensation. Great service and great atmosphere. I have not been disappointed yet.
Quality fish. I had the fish & prawn dumpling for entree and trevally as main. The dumplings wasn't that great. Homemade tartare sauce nice but not to my taste. Main was pretty good. Fish was cooked with a light batter and it was fresh and with quality. My friend had the fish pie and she said it was the best seafood pie she ever had. Maybe will come back for it.
Fish and chips.. Classic and quite tasty.
Located in a corner location, the restaurant is light, open and intimately friendly. Staff are polite and service is prompt. We had a standard F&C and a fish pie. Serves were a good size and food was extremely tasty! Coffee was good too! Price is not cheap but ok for the quantity and quality.
Finally had a chance to visit here after they relocated. Highly recommend the grilled Dory with grapes and fish pie 😋. Quality of the food remains high, but the table service was slightly off for a relatively quiet night. Overall though, will recommend!
Love this place. Mohr moved to a new, bigger location but still on the same street. The new hub has more seating capacity and better interiors. As for the food, I highly recommend Bouillabaisse and/or their grilled Scallop to start; and then go with their awesome mains like Dory with grapes, almonds and gratin potatoes or their Rockling with asparagus, hollandaise sauce and chips. My partner is an avid fan of Mohr and talks highly of the memories he had with this restaurant. With friendly and attentive team to compliment their delicious dishes- what more can you ask for?! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Wife and I chose Mohr Fish at random during a cool Sunday wander - not a bad choice.
Bouillabaisse was my wife's entree (loved it) and the herbed scallops for myself (very nice once some of the herbs were scraped off ... just too much for me).
Mains were the monkfish and a fish pie which were thoroughly enjoyed (although the mash with monkfish was quite lumpy).
With a wine each it was $120 lunch which we were okay with given the lovely flavours.
Also, a call out for the attentive service. Yeah it was a quiet day but still appreciated. 😴
We'll certainly be back and hopefully the mash will be smoother next time.
Recommended. 👍
Great new larger space for this institution. Portions are generous and you never leave hungry. Best fish cakes we've had in a long time!
I had read the reviews on this place and thought I would give it a try. I was not disappointed. Great fresh food, good service! It's a casual little place but if you're less about the decor and more about the quality of food this place is for you. I ordered the Bouillabaisse, Scallops, Salt & Peppered Squid and Papaya Salad for two people was satisfying. Thank you to the staff at Mohr will be back again.
My friends all had the seafood and they all said how marvellous and beautiful it was. I don't eat seafood but when the waiter heard this he asked the chef if he had something else ( not on the menu). The chef prepared the most delicious chicken burger just for me, with chips and salad. The service was brilliant and faultless. Thank you so much for a delightful evening.
We have been to Mohr Fish for many years but the first time at their new and much larger restaurant down the road.
We shared a Szechuan Salt and Pepper prawns on a bed of papaya salad as the entree. We then had the fish pie and the Monk fish as mains.
Beautifully cooked, flavoursome and generous serves. Our waiter also couldn’t have been more helpful and polite. Pleasure to give them 5/5 for the wonderful meal
