Hartsyard thank you , absolutely delicious food, awesome experience great service and just a fantastic energy and feel about the place ...
Every dish was amazing can’t wait to come again and so sorry it took us so long to come in the first place xxx thank you
This is one of the best dining experiences I have ever had in Sydney. The restaurant has a casual atmosphere and the food is next level. There's so many different flavours in one dish and the portion sizes are a good size. The desert is incredible too. There was 5 of us there and we all loved every dish, especially the roasted beetroot and the pork. The waitress was lovely too. This is value for money. I'll definitely be coming back here soon! Thanks Hartsyard for an excellent and delicious evening!
Fantastic food, really friendly and genuine staff and a relaxed environment, with a great wine list.
Really strongly recommend!
Would highly recommend this fabulous establishment. We did the pre-theatre Let us cook for you menu and got fed with enough time for us to get to the show. Food was delicious and so generous. Service was friendly and soundtrack was wicked! Nice casual vibe. We will be back! 👍🏻
New,interesting food, lively vibrant, atmosphere, attentive and sharp wait staff that know you the second time you visit!
Best restaurant experience of the decade for us. Couldn't recommend this place enough. This is what restaurant dining should become!
I've never been to a restaurant quite like this-- amazing, creative food and awesome service. From the drinks to the starters (seed) and mains (feed), we found ourselves stuffed after having had an unbelievable meal! Thank you to Greg and the rest of the staff for a wonderful and memorable evening!
A degustation of southern cuisine to delight your palate with decent beers/wine to wash it down with. Definitely worth a return trip!
Second time here. First was great, this time was better! We chose the 'let us cook for you' option, even with various dietary requirements across the table, was a great meal and everyone was satisfied. Every dish is a surprise of flavours and textures. Won't hesitate to come back here again and again.
This place is nothing short of amazing-ness! Every bite is like an explosion of flavours in your mouth . Try the salad with the peas and corn, definitely our favourite from this place ! Also make sure you go with an empty stomach because you'd want to try EVERYTHING .
Love the confit carrots! Don’t normally eat veggies but this I loved! The famous fried chicken with biscuits and gravy were pretty yummy too!
Awesome place food is excellent and so is the service. I will be back soon!
The customer service here was very attentive. We ordered from the main menu and the food portions were reasonable. Recommend the pork jowl as it melts in your mouth as well as the fried cheese. Would definitely go back.
Giving 5 stars which I think is a little generous but defo way more than four, even 4.5 would be harsh.
Had dinner with a couple of mates. We shared a heap of stuff, standouts were the cuttlefish and the pork jowl. staff were great, pricepoint is on the money. Definitely hope to return.
Love everything about the latest version of Hartsyard. This place is not talked about enough. We had the tasting menu and every dish was presented so beautifully and the flavours were just so sophisticated and exciting! Best restaurant in Newtown hands down. We have been recommending Hartsyard to everyone we know. A definite must try! Can’t wait to be back.

In my opinion the best degustation menu in Sydney at this stage. If you are in Sydney looking for great food experience with a good service at reasonable price definitely this place is a must to visit.
What a great experience at Hartsyard . Friendly service , fabulous, ‘out of the square’ food . A real dining experience for a special occasion
Went here for a double date. Really cool vibe, the staff are all super chill and friendly. Great wine list too. I must come back to try the rest of the menu.
The customer service here is always prompt and attentive. The food is good for the price. The seafood is definitely fresh, they bring you the live catch to confirm if the weight in okay with you then proceed to bring it to the kitchen. Favourite place to have dinner gathering. It can get busy throughout the night, best to call for a booking or head there early.
I’ve heard so many good things about the Cauliflower ($22) that it became the dish I was most excited to try for the night. And wow was it stunner. This cauliflower gets the royal treatment at Hartsyard – it is deep-fried then grilled, before being sprayed with anchovy dressing, topped with onions, capers, and walnuts, then placed into a pool of chicken jus. Even without all the condiments, the nutty smokiness of the cauliflower alone is worth your time. But it becomes downright magical once it has soaked up the umami of the chicken jus, the richness tempered by the brightness of capers and pickled onion. This is good enough to convert even the most avid of meat-eaters; sorry Miznon, your cauliflower has been bested!
This place is always packed with people. The service is friendly. Prices are a little expensive. Their soft serve was soo good though! I love how creative everything is! Always coming up with new specials! Definitely worth a try!
I came to Hartsyard cause i heard the finger-licking fried chicken was all the rave, also heard from the vine that they served a lamb tartare which sparked my curiosity.
To be honest, i don't remember the chicken which speaks to how memorable it was (not at all). The sides were definitely average and i can't say much about them. The lamb tartare on the other hand though was delicious ! Very well seasoned, you couldn't tell it was lamb because it wasn't gamey at all.
Absolutely incredible. I took my partner here and we had the best time. Great cocktails and the food is amazing!
All the staff are extremely friendly and helpful with menu selections
We enjoyed a few meals at Hartsyard prior to Hartsyard 2.0 and always enjoyed it. Found the new menu to be light, refreshing and delicious especially the Prawn/Scampi Tartare which was sensational. Staff are always friendly, knowledgeable and attentive. Love it!
I'm a sucker for good prawns and after a long wait did I taste prawns that were so delicious! Awesome staff busy vibes makes any evening memorable. The cauliflower and corn dishes were good too!
Everything on the menu was delicious, the fried chicken is a must try. Staff are super enthusiastic and friendly, service was on point, would definitely return.
Had a nice time at Hartsyard; the food was lovely. We had the Beef Tartare, Poutine, the Fried Chicken and Lamb Ribs. A highlight of the evening was the Bounty Soft Serve. The cocktails were delicious; favourites being the Modern Royale and the Hartsyard Manhattan.
With a Southern influence on both their food and cocktails, Hartsyard delivers in every aspect! I highly recommend the poutine and chicken skins. A salty delight with loads of umami! Andy Bowdy's fallen ice cream creations are the perfect way to end a meal, and with a new flavour each week, you need to come back and try them all!!
Great service. We got the degustation option at $70pp. The meals came out at a good pace and they were delicious but we would've liked at least one more dish out of the 7 to be another protein. Nevertheless we left feeling full and satisfied. Dessert was the highlight for me. Great balance and presentation.
Went to Hartsyard to celebrate my husband's birthday and it definitely exceeded expectations!😃 I recommend the "feed me" option as you get to taste a variety of dishes that you would generally not be able to order in one sitting. At 70 per person, it's good value for money as well.
The menu is limited, but boy does the chef get it right! Perfect blend of hearty American comfort food (fried chicken with biscuits and poutine) and sophisticated treats ( loved the duck pate appetizer and the confit carrot)! Dessert stole the show- Amazing carrot cake with buttermilk icecream and citrus foam! Yum!
Did not try the drinks though I've heard good things!
The ambience was decent. Can get a bit crowded with tables situated close to each other. I'm glad I booked a table coz the place was packed even on a Sunday night.
The servers were very friendly and made us feel comfortable. They also accomodated our requests for substitution of certain foods.
The only reason I'm taking off half a star is because the bathrooms were not the cleanest- a place like Hartsyard should not have grubby unisex bathrooms.
Overall, had an absolutely wonderful experience at Hartyard and would highly recommend it. Good job!
This was my third time coming back to Hartsyard and it was my best experience yet. Amazing food and even better service. The staff there were able to cater to our last minute change in guest number, and even gave us free dessert for our birthday girl. Hartsyard will always be a favourite.
Please try the pumpkin dumplings. You will not regret it.
Despite being embarrassingly late to a fully booked restaurant- they were so accommodating and understanding. The gnocco fritto and the lamb ribs had me licking the plate. This is one of those restaurants that match their amazing reviews; and I have no regrets choosing Hartsyard for my special occasion. Cannot forget to mention about the staff- service was friendly and attentive. I thank the whole team for a great night x
The Poutine and Pulled Pork was simply to die for! Extraordinary dishesSo very succulent, tasty, and melt in your mouth.A bit on the dear side and portioning could be better, but that's just nitpicking. Good atmosphere for socialising and drinking. Get in quick, though, as spaces fill.
This has been on my Wishlist for so long, had to get an extra late booking as they were booked out for the day but I would definitely say it was worth it!
It has a great portion of vegetarian dishes which complimented the meat dishes very well. Very flavoursome and I honestly wished there was more because we ended up finishing everything off the plate! A little disappointed because we got a very average soft serve which was what I was looking forward to the most, but I got to try all the other desserts which was still very scrumptious.
Highly recommend this place!

Came on a Friday night - it is quite difficult to make bookings. The seating in the middle tables are a little cramped. Most of the dishes were tasty, although I wasn't blown away by any in particular, including the famous fried chicken. Service was pretty attentive though. Expect to pay around 50pp with a small group.
Sensational - I'll start with the sheer reality of our experience. Complete walk-ups after long-term interest in the Hartsyard establishment and all too-often playing the passers-by. A busy Friday night somehow allowed us a small corner at the bar where our neighbours soon vacated. Despite the bar so tightly packed close to the door, you're still somewhat sheltered from the cold breeze that's expected. Bar staff know their product well. Good advice and recommendations on craft beers and their wine list was well received.
Hartsyard is the first place I have ever dined where I have been recommended to reduce the order, even when ordering conservatively - my physical capabilities are rarely unmatched to my enthusiasm. Upon this advice, we kept our order at two seeds and one feed. There's a big focus on protein so we obliged. School Prawns. Lamb Tartare. Fried chicken. No let downs here on either fronts. School prawns crisp and delicious, dipped in a mildly-tart, whipped yoghurt foam. Lamb tartare relatively light alongside a cumin based harissa, broken down with marscapone. Fried chicken sports a moderate layer of crisp batter. The chicken is tender, juicy and incredibly tasty. Buttermilk biscuit and 'low country' gravy anything but low, and incredibly moreish. Despite desires we really couldn't fit dessert, however there will always be room for return visits.
The service is spectacular. Staff have real personality and a genuine warmth. The drinks menus aren't over the top, yet offer a significant range to those who visit. Quality portions alongside quality food. I'll be back for more.
Wow. The food was marvellous at such an unassuming shop front. There was a pungent smell in the restaurant when we first arrived which made me consider leaving instantly - however, I am glad we didn't! The pulled pork and smoke trout was A M A Z I N G! The oyster po oy was nice, but not worth $24 for two little English muffins with oyster in the middle. The fried chicken wasn't anything special, not sure why this was a recommended dish. But overall, the food was interesting and yum!

After hearing so many good things about this place, I finally had a chance to try it! I loved everything about this place. The staff was so friendly and tried to be as accommodating as possible, due to our seating arrangements.
Looking at the menu, you quickly realised that everything was a sharing menu. We were stuck with what to order because everything sounded amazing. After getting some recommendations, we ordered a few popular items on the menu. One standout dish, which surprised me was a vegetarian dish! It was so full of flavour, I loved it! We were going to end with the popular soft serve, but the flavour of the day didn't really interest us so we went with the sundae.
I'll recommend coming to this restaurant with a group of friends so you can try more variety of dishes.
Came to Hartsyard purely for the soft serve after seeing many photos on instagram. We were lucky that the special was so delicious - rocky road cheescake! And it was exactly that - delicious. The chocolate coated peanuts on the outside were amazing and I loved that there was an actual cheesecake included. I would have given it a 4 had it now been for the cost - $18 is far too expensive for something like this. I could order a dish for that price at other restaurants. After all, it's just a soft serve with bits of marshmellow, chocolate, peanuts and cherries around it. It seems the whole menu is quite overpriced. Service wasn't exactly attentive either.
This place just gets it so right! I went with some friends and booked in the next weekend for a special dinner and both nights the food was amazing, the service efficient but friendly, oh and the food! Highlights were the chicken skin, school prawns, sweet potato salad and of course the famous fried chicken. The 2 standouts from a ditinguished field were the pulled pork (to quote my other half, the best thing he's eaten, ever) and the sundae. Could not find a fault so a rare 5 rating, can't wait to go back.
Hartsyard has been on our to-eat list for a while, but it’s not easy to snare a spot at this popular joint in Enmore. By chance, we managed to get ourselves in thanks to a friend’s booking and finally experienced their take on indulgent American diner food for ourselves. Their menu is designed to share, with a selection of small and larger plates for you to mix and match. The prices are fairly steep on first glance, especially when you see the serving sizes. But once you taste the richness of the food, you can see why they recommend that you share about 4-5 dishes between 4 people.
For a heart-stopping meal, Hartsyard certainly fits the bill. Fried chicken, pulled pork with maple bacon, and that soft serve!
Admittedly, dessert was the drawcard but the food is pretty sensational.
It was a last-minute decision to dine at Hartsyard and we managed to nab a couple of spots at the communal table in the bar for a later sitting.
The food is great but probably a bit heavy for a late meal. Didn't stop us from ordering dessert though and we rolled out of Hartsyard.
And just like the reason why there's two 's' in 'dessert', you wanna have two desserts at this place- if your tummy can fit it!
Coming across as a modern adaptation of mostly American cuisines (fried chicken, ricotta medallions, confit carrot, pulled pork, sundaes etc), Hartsyard is a small restaurant + bar which produces carefully presented, upscale dishes with uncommon flavour combinations.
It may not be suitable for all, but if you're looking to expand your tastebuds and palate- then give Hartsyard a go.
My friend and I ordered the pulled pork and the ricotta gnudi (which is just a fancy Italian way of saying 'nude ricotta').
The pulled pork was served as a solidified slab which you tear into with your fork. This is served with a chunky slice of glazed pork belly on the top and then a side of fried pork rind/crackling and slices of pear. The pork had a ridiculously smokey taste- it's as if it had been sitting on a stack of hickory for 24 hours.
However the real hero of the mains was the ricotta gnudi. Served as half-sphere pillows in a garden of zesty pesto and multi-layered leek/onion mini towers- this dish was so delicate yet the flavour quite intense but balanced, my friend and I would have loved to have gotten more portions of the stuff! Yum!
We couldn't have ended the night on a better note. The dessert we chose was 'the sundae'. This was a concoction of banana-coffee ice cream, chocolate munchkin donuts, which were atop of a crushed up mix of rum n raisin, banana and pecans. Combined with warm forster sauce (which we have no idea about), the bottom of the sundae was just an intensely gooey, chewy mess- making for a strong contrast to the creaminess of the ice cream. Phwoaaaarrr, WHAT a dessert. It could have easily served 3-4 people.
Hartsyard, limited choices for mains, but killer desserts. It's a little bit fancy, but can throw down any day of the week with its moorish desserts.
If you're looking for greasy American food then this is not the place. Delicious and fresh dishes with a fun share plate arrangement. Highly recommend the ricotta gnudi- soft pillowy melt-in-your-mouth goodness! And you must try one of their signature desserts before calling it a night!
Tonight my friend and I went to Hartsyard for the first time. The food was great. So was the ambiance and the staff all seemed professional and friendly. However our experience was made truly exceptional by our bar tender Sarah. She has easily delivered the best customer experience I have ever experienced in Sydney. She is genuine, knowledgeable and professional. She's got a great feeling for who her customers are. She knows who she can have a have a laugh with but has her sophisticated bar tending ready for a more stern customer. I was also impressed with her mentioning another customers last name after receiving the payment - because she paid attention to detail (and the name on the credit card). All of this while she was in a constant, busy flow of work. She's so smooth and natural in her service, and she's got a genuine love for what she does. Bravo, Sarah! The food was great but the service truly set Hartsyard appart. Sarah is a true asset. We'll be back.
Hartsyard Newtown often comes up as a contender when considering where to find the best fried chicken in Australia, and indeed its some of the best we’ve ever tried, but there’s a lot more to Hartsyard than fried chicken.
Want the most authentic American food in Sydney? Then head to this buzzy place for an OTT experience. Bring lots of friends as you would want to try everything & it is all super rich & heavy, even for a greedy guts like me. The oyster po boys (slider) is the best as is the refreshing kingfish ceviche. The lamb ribs smokey & fork tender. Pulled pork is decadent but oh so good with maple bacon. Corn bread is super yum & perfect for mopping up all the sauces. Dont underestimate the vegetable dishes such as A carrot (1 giant one) & spuds in the form of poutine (more fat, more cheese, so tasty!!) But no matter how full you are, you must try the decadent sundaes or soft serves.
A delightful restaurant which has generous servings and great value for money. I really enjoyed the different flavours and super impressed with the variety of dishes. The stand out for me was the lamb tartare and pulled pork. Dessert is an absolute must no matter how full you are. I'll definitely be back.
So good! So so good!! What a pleasure having such good americano food in oz. This guy can cook at the helm!! Been a frequent goer of this joint for years and many more to come!
I was at Hartsyard last night with a group of 12. We had to have the group menu which is really great value at $75 (plus that annoying "service surcharge" that restaurants always tack onto a group booking - why not include it in the set price). There was MORE than enough food and the group menu included all the best dishes such as school prawns, oyster po'boys (yum) and fried chicken. We did not walk away hungry that's for sure.
I'd not been here for a few years and it's great to see that the food has remained amazing - the quality and flavour of every dish was spot on. Every single dish was totally delicious and it would be hard to pick a favourite, but for me definitely the oyster po'boys, the pork dish, the school prawns and the ginormous sundae at the end. And, of course the fried chicken (but they needed to give us more of the sausage gravy and the biscuits were M.I.A).
Hartsyard has a reputation for serving "American style" food and this is true of some of the dishes (po'boys, fried chicken, sundae) whilst other dishes seem to be more regular style "modern cuisine" (think the pork and cauliflower mains, smoked trout and then the heirloom tomato entree). I like the mix of styles and the lighter, more modern style dishes break up the heaviness of dishes like the fried chicken.
Our group was well looked after - I would say service was efficient, and they handled our large group well.
Dined here with a couple of friends on a whim, just walked in and the staff were very friendly and sat us straightaway. We tried the gnocchetti with crab, the sauce was well seasoned and there were good big chunks of crab however the pasta was a little underdone. Obviously tried the fried chicken which was fantastic! I was very sad you only got one biscuit with it as I could have eaten a tray of them lol. We also shared the smoked lamb ribs they were smoky, spicy and just fell apart in your mouth. I absolutely recommend this place but I will say all they food is very rich so you do get full quickly.
We went with 4 people and had an great time. We shared the school of prawns (amazing), lamb ribs (really great cooking, but probably on the sweet side for me), carrot confit, maccheroni (amazing flavour), poutine (crisp, freshly cooked thick chips, with beef shin gravy) and then the soft serve icecream. The place had a great vibe to it, and service was very good.

We went to hartsyard a while ago and it was enjoyable. The food was pretty interesting, the dishes were unique so we had a pleasant experience there. Not sure when we will be returning next but we do would recommend it, especially for dessert!
Lovely customer service, amazing food! The menu is made for sharing, so you buy a some entrees and main meals and share it. Really nice food, didn't get a chance to try the dessert but will definitely be back for more. It's unlike anything I've ever had, with every first bite of each meal we had, we were blown away. Delicious. Had an amazing time here for my 3 year anniversary , will definitely come back for any occasion. Cocktail menu is a must to try.
Small cosy atmosphere, nice for groups of 6 or less (restaurant is quite small).
Service is great and were able to provide some good advice on food choices.
Seeds:
Love love the crispy pork tail - must try !
Duck terrine was a bit strong for my liking but the cherries, apricot and the bread was a great compliment.
Feeds:
The fried chicken was average - similar to other restaurants.
Dessert:
Soft serve with burnt honey ice cream, figs, parmesan crisps and salted caramel
- ice cream was a bit bland
- not really enjoying the Parmesan crisps on a dessert
Hartsyard is located in Enmore, a short stroll from Newtown Station. The restaurant looks quite small and is popular so I recommend you book in advance. As a walk in on a Sunday night, I was seated at the counter. It's quite dark and dim so it would be quite ideal for a romantic dinner or an intimate dinner with a close friend.
Friendly and fast service is the key ingredient to keep your customers happy, and Hartsyard definitely does a good job on that.
Food was great and we definitely had a good time. Anyone would be indulged here. Main dish was great, but what memorable was their sundae. Their dessert was on top notch. Their sundae was just great. Bottom line was everything that we had was beautiful plated and nicely seasoned.
Service: 10/10
Food:
Rum sundae ($10) - 9/10
Staff were so friendly and communicated well with customers. Had a really enjoyable atmosphere even though it was quite crowded. The sundae was also a quite generous portion so it was definitely worth the money spend and it tasted great
I have to admit that sometimes I can be a bit of a pessimist. Especially on occasion when you enter a nice restaurant, get immediately seated and have a professional and friendly waitress to serve you as well as guide you through the menu in a matter of seconds.. I naturally expect that something has got to give... but it does not, not this time. My fiancé and I have each had a three course meal... which satisfied both of us in quality (the pork belly was the biggest stand out and a must for any pork meat lovers) as well as quantity (the size of the desert almost scared us, but it was just way to delicious to let go off the forks and save some for later). Well, can't wait to get back soon for more...
This place is really really good. We went there when it wasn't too busy which was nice. Chicken is amazing. . Best pulled pork I've ever had... the poutine was amazing and the soft swerve. . Wow..... go and book ahead of time!
Nice food and good environment and friendly staff. Food was slow but seeing only 5 people worked in the kitchen I can understand why. Food was simply amazing and their dessert soft serve is unique! Nothing like you've ever tried before. Overall good dining experience tho the $ is a little high for its portions.
A really good experience where every dish has a little twist but it's core elements are strong. The interior is stylish and the atmosphere a buzz, for such a happening place the bar staff were v friendly and accomodating by sydney standards. Wine list a little pricey but selections are varied and well thought out
Since Hartsyard first opened its doors in Sydney 3 years ago with their modern take on American grub, they have gone from strength to strength. The husband and wife team had humble dreams of sharing their love of Southern US comfort food with the good folks down under and they have certainly done just that.
From the stripped back industrial features to the selection of tumbler glassware, every inch of this restaurant has been thought through with careful consideration and for a patron, it definitely makes for a more personalised experience.
The first time I managed to score an elusive booking for dinner on a weekend was a much anticipated event. First impressions did not disappoint as staff were incredibly welcoming and polite. Menus are designed for sharing and it's advised to have a selection of two 'seed' and one 'feed' per couple.
Oyster po'boys are a must try and is a battered oyster with slaw in a mini English muffin. I usually hate oysters and English muffins, but this po'boy was bang on and left me wanting more. Unfortunately stomach space is vital so I settled on dish two which was the octopus.
Now I must mention at this point I had ordered a pineapple cocktail of some sort. Admittedly I am the cheapest drunk you will ever find so my review from here forward can only be described as hazy.
Octopus was cooked well with a nice char. Main of pulled pork and apple looked petite but was incredibly moreish and filling. Then it got to dessert. The house special was the 'wagon wheel' and OMG when this baby arrived we had the eyes of the entire room on us.
The plate was twice the size of my face and made me so happy I couldn't stop giggling... Or maybe it was that damned cocktail... This dessert ticked all the boxes and satisfied all the senses. A gooey, smokey marshmallow paired with shards of meringue, fresh berries, sugared jellies, biscuit crumbs, chocolate and ice cream; it was an explosion of fireworks and completely blew my mind.
However, the second time I managed to fight my way into Newtown (has anyone else tried to park in this place?!), my experience at Hartsyard was slightly different. This time we sat at the bar which was nice and cosy, but gave us front row seats to couples on first dates. I really should have gone for another cocktail.
We ordered the po'boys, hush puppies, buttermilk fried chicken and peanut butter sundae. Unlike the first time, the food was nice but nothing to write home about. The chicken was far too salty and rather disappointing considering all the rave it has drummed up. Sundae was supercharged with the American flare so prepare to run home as compensation.
I hear they have lost their beloved dessert master Andy to greener pastures and it feels like the food has also lost a bit of its soul. To be fair, food is still decent and prices are reasonable, so if you intend to visit, do get in early to grab a bar seat as table service is booked out well in advance.

H A R T S Y A R D Forget your salads, forget your small portions of food, forget paying ridiculous prices. You HAVE to head to Hartsyard to experience American cuisine with a hint of Newtown. We had the prawn popcorn with actual prawns in it, the fried chicken which was out of this world and the best pulled pork that I've ever experienced in my life! ✌ @foodiesguidetosydney
Great American-style food with a touch of fine dining.. I absolutely fell in love with the Scallop dish, which was combined with almonds and grapes - weird but a delicious combo!! Their Fried Chicken is another must, with it's buttermilk spongy biscuit - so bad but so good! We ordered the Poutine as well but realised we didn't have much room to finish it, it was good but not as great as other Poutine we have tried elsewhere.
The highlight of our dinner was the dessert - we had to order the "smashed" HF soft serve... That night the ice cream was Pavlova, which was excellent because I absolutely love Pavlova!! It was presented so well, the best way to serve a soft serve cone. Haha. I'm curious to try the other flavours, so I will be back just for their ice cream dessert!!! :)
We ordered 3 dishes :- the oyster mini sliders, brocolli, and fried chicken, and all were very tasty. We were especially surprised by the brocolli with cheese shavings- highly recommended and full of flavour although may be able salty for some. The creaming soda was interesting and a must try. For dessert, we ordered the lemon sorbet soft serve, which was amazing with plentiful explosion of sweet, sour and tangy flavours.
This place is famous for their fried chicken & now I know why, it's amazing and paired with a biscuit and sauce.. Would highly recommend saving room for dessert too!! Best
Decided to go there on a Sunday. Called them up at 5pm and was told that we'd have to sit at the bar as we did not have a booking. Arrived at the restaurant at 6.30pm just before it started to get busy.
Our party of 3 ordered the scallops, smoked trout and pulled pork. We enjoyed all 3 dishes. The pulled pork with maple bacon, yogurt & apple really stood out and the serving was bigger than the other dishes. We were too full to try their desserts. Service was friendly and attentive. I didn't like the dim lighting at the bar.
I have a soft spot for unhealthy American foods and this is one of those places you go to.
The staff are chill, the foods great but my wallet wasn't after a few drinks
Came for dinner with my fiancé, service was friendly and attentive and the restaurant was small but cosy.
We ordered the crispy pig tails first, which were yummy and soft, the taste was lighter than I expected it to be and the side veggies complemented the dish well.
The first feed we received were the scallops, which were perfectly cooked and melt in your mouth, again the accompanying veggies and sauce was delicious. I didn't really like how the spinach (I think?) tasted with the scallop though.
The second feed we order was the fried chicken, the crunchy, moist and tasty chicken was so good! Perfectly cooked! Unfortunately we couldn't finish the other 2 pieces of chicken and had to doggie bag it for later! Not a fan of the biscuit (which I'd call a scone) but the sauce was nice.
Overall, we would definitely see ourselves back again.
Exceptional service, even if the food was bad we would come back just for the service. On the contrary, food was delicious and full of flavour. What blew us away was the gorgeous maple bacon and pulled pork. We ate so much we couldn't fit in dessert. Don't worry though, we will be back for dessert.
Try the broccoli dish too!
The soft serve was great - tasted and looked amazing, but very pricy for $20. Pulled pork with bacon and maple syrup was also yummy and unique. Fried chicken is completely overrated - can get just as good friend chicken at many take away shops for a fraction of price. Deep fried oysters in mini burgers was very heavy on creamy sauce, but my dining companion liked it. He also ordered a creaming soda which he said was great. Service is very impressive, almost fine dining level - each dish was brought to us as a separate course to share and our individual dishes were changed multiple times. Restaurant is small and squashy due to popularity. The soft serve was impressive but I wouldn't come again due to the outrageous prices.
Always go to hartsyard for an out of this world dessert, but don't know how this is going to be once Andy Bowden has left as dessert chef. As for the mains, they are typical American comfort food with a modern and refined twist. Really love this place, it's been a long time favourite of mine.
In a town like Sydney - full of overrated food - this place totally lives up to the hype. Menu items are for sharing so ask wait staff how much you'll need to order, but rest assured everything is delicious and unique without being inaccessible to the non-foodie. Everyone is friendly and the vibe is nice and relaxed.

For a few years now, Newtown restaurants resolute with their food are carving a loyal following among serious food lovers. Oscillate Wildly and Bloodwood are a handful that have distinguished themselves from the litany of casual Thai, Chinese, Japanese and Korean dotted along King street. Hartsyard, Newtown
Went on a Saturday and it was a bit busy so had to wait for 15mins to be seated. A small restaurant and since there was a big group of diners it was actually quite loud and noisy. Food portions weren't big so had to order more. Nice dessert though.
Ten points to gryffindor! Between 3, we had 3 desserts and our mains. The peanut butter sundae was standard, would definitely go for their weekly special cones or pies though. Wowzers were we satisfied.... Great food and good service. Grew an extra thumb to give three thumbs up for them.
Definitely one of the more memorable eats. This bustling joint that’s packed every single night. Be sure to make a booking ahead of time though they do leave a few seats for walk-ins at the bar.
I start off the review by feeling apologetic.. because I’m guilty of beiung too lazy to revisit here and give this place a better quality review to do it justice. This is because this place is fantastic. They have friendly service and are always completely booked… you have the option to rock up and hopefully get a seat at the bar… but I prefer pre-booking and getting a table. The venue is quite small so doesn’t really cater for large groups. They have a delicious chilli sauce that they use for their foods and you can also buy a bottle to take home. I don’t normally give such high praises to places but this place delivers time after time…and its definitely one I highly recommend for others to try. The price tag is on the slight higher end but you can forgive it for its quality. I recommend their Oyster Po’Boy, Hartsyard Soft Serve and their Fried Chicken.
Wow.... Walk in ---- > Ask for fried chicken -----> Thank me later (or thank them)
Fantastic food & service. The food is fantastic, innovative and fun. We tried the school of prawns - delicious and crunchy, house-made crisps - light and flavorful, lamb ribs - cooked perfectly, falling off the bone and fried chicken - hearty pieces of chicken fried with in a delectable crisp batter. Everything looked and tasted amazing. Service was very friendly, helpful and attentive. Can't wait to go again!
Excellent but EXPENSIVE!!. Went there for dinner with 5 others!! We all had a great night but the food was a little pricey for what we got!! We ended up spending about $150 each with drinks....just too expensive for a regular visit
One of my favourite restaurants but if you don't book be prepared to wait. The restaurant isn't very big so the wait could be quite long. -- The Food -- (apologies for poor lighting & phone camera) Blackboard special: Crispy Pork Skin, pulled pork (In jar), toasted bread and tamarind/beetroot jelly/sauce The crispy pork skin is divine. The skin is so crispy, airy and flavoursome. Feels like I'm snacking on some chips. The pulled pork was amazingly good. Spreadable on the toast and with the addition of the jelly reminds me of a tuna sandwich with a jam sauce. The pulled pork is moist and soft with sensational flavours. We loved this sharing platter. The combination of all items was spot on perfect! House- made Crisps -- Chicken, Pork, Crackers, Vegetable Cream Cheese Nice sharing platter while waiting for mains. Chatting away and munching away on these protein-licious snacks. Taste: feels like chips with dips. Super yum Pulled Pork - maple bacon, yogurt, apple Super moist pork that ha
If you’re looking for fine dining on the outskirts of the CBD area, Hartsyard is the go-to restaurant. The restaurant is fairly small and the portion sizes are also small so if you’re coming hungry, it’s probably best to add on extra dishes.
Love this restaurant. The food is delicious and amazing value and the team are always so welcoming and knowledgeable. I always feel comfortable and love the fun and inviting experience they create every time I visit. Thank you for being you!
The food was amazing!! We got the scallops, kingfish collar, sirloin and pumpkin seed ice cream! The best we’re the kingfish and pumpkin seed ice cream! It’s rare for restaurants to cook with the collar/belly but it’s my favourite part and it was so flavourful. The pumpkin seed ice cream was unique and flavourful but not too sweet. Great food! Interior design isn’t the best- chairs are uncomfortable. It would also be awesome if they composted their food waste/scraps.
Had this during the covid make it yourself menu - I felt a lot of the dishes were on the sweeter side of things, my palette preference is more so savoury. The ribs had amazing flavours and incredibly moist - so good! However I wasn’t a massive fan of the mussels with the cucumber sauce - not cucumber sauce was not to my liking and felt it was quite chewy.
Been a few times now and the menu changes but its always tasty and beautifully presented. More on the pricier side but a great option for date night. Staff have been really friendly on all visit.
Delicious with some great twists and flavours
A real gem. We were at Cafe Paci the prior week and this is in the neighbourhood
Cute small and fancy restaurant. Starters were delicious! I could have had 2 more portions of each! Afterwards we had a potato dish and then a steak dish. Both were quite small - degustation size I would say. I was quite underwhelmed with the cooking and the size of the steak. Usually at other restaurants they give you one steak to share. But I felt like we received 1/4-1/3 of a piece. They used wagyu but a well cooked cheaper cut wouldve been better and it could be bigger as well! Unfortunately after paying $100 each for the tasting menu, I left hungry 😞 You could add additional dishes but I feel for $100 you should be allowed to feel full.
My partner and I excitedly celebrated our anniversary here tonight and Aidan was our server and he was kind, knowledgeable, and personable.
The food was incredible. I am fructan and sorbitol intolerant and my partner is a vegetarian and Hartsyard we’re happy to accomodate the dietary requirements. 10/10 recommend.
