I always order Beef Vindaloo from here...why? Because it is the best in Sydney. Mouth watering, tangy, melt in your mouth awesomeness. They never disappoint.
Love this Restaurant so much, always hot, always delivered fast and ALWAYS delicious. Thanks again to the staff for another wonderful gastronomical delight.
Oh my. I’m hard to please with curry and it’s hard to find a great one in Sydney. Thank goodness I’ve finally found one after 7 years living here. This was EPIC. Fresh, tasty, just the right amount of spice. Delicious. A bit expensive but worth the extra $$. Delivery said 50 mins but was here in 20. Awesome. Yum yum.
The food was yummiest ever! The service was excellent and i like the wallpaper pictures really brought me back to Incredible India!
Best Indian food I have had since moving to Sydney, staff are lovely service great , a gem of a place to eat
Had a chance to visit this place of over long weekend.
Great Indian food, railway goat curry and herb nan was beautiful.
Really a busy place, value for money. Highly recommended
My first visit yesterday, and what a wonderful experience! It is the best Indian food I have found in Sydney, or Australia for that matter! Can't wait to go back, wish they delivered to Balmain
Amazing curry take away. Best Indian I have had in the 6years I have lived in Australia. Also they accommodated a slight change to my order. Definitely will recommend!
Outstanding! Haven't been there for awhile as they'd stopped doing lunch. Went for early dinner tonight and was great food and service.
Delivery was bit late.....but great food as well as service...they called me to let me know that delivery will be late by 15 min......still worth to wait and expected late as its Friday night......
Good food colonial we will be order again...

Exactly as the name suggests... excellent choice of English Colonial style Indian dishes. Highly recommended.
this place has become our go to indian restaurant in city. great food, good drinks and amazing service. they tick all the boxes off a good indian venue. cherry on top is the food is authentic and not over the to expensive
The food was delicious. Mango lassi is a must. Good presentation too. The service was decent except we were seated at the back and was difficult to get the waiter's attention. Only suggestion is to improve the service.
Another place CE which serves great Indian food they have some amazing salads and one of the best vegetarian food in the country if you want some thing vegetarian visit the place they will satisfy your needs
Extremely delicious Indian food, great staff and such a cool place. Absolutely my fav Indian restaurant in Sydney. Highly recommended!! ❤️
I really enjoy this place. They’re BYO, which is always a great option.
The food is very tasty. It’s freshly cooked. I appreciate that you can see the cooks prepare food in front of you.
Service is fast.
I’m not a specialist of Indian food, but it tastes great.
Love The Colonial as it serves some of my favorite curries - Brinjal Patiala and Goat Curry! I love a well cooked Goat - and it takes effort to cook a good one. Top marks to this Indian joint - the eastern suburbs needs a few of these!
This is our local lunch favourite! We recently ordered lunch for about 20 people in the office and boy did they deliver! There was Butter Chicken, Tikka masala, Beef Madras, Lamb Roganjosh, Dal Makhani, Amritsari malai kofta and a couple of other dishes with Naan and Rice. I couldnt fault a dish, the curries had plenty of meat in it, the Naan was fresh and rice perfectly cooked. They even threw in poppadums and chutneys. They made me a hit with the work peeps and I'll be ordering from them again. Thank you for an amazing mid-week lunch feast!
Best Indian Restaurant in Sydney – Delicious Curry and Wine! We were craving some good Indian food and decided to give this restaurant a taste test. When we walked in, we were greeted by a lovely gentleman who walked us to our table. We didn’t have a booking and lucky for us there was room to squeeze us in. We ordered some curry dishes, naan, rice and some wine with our dinner. YUM! It was simply delicious, probably the best Indian food we have had in a long time. My partner couldn’t agree more on how good their Indian dishes are. The wine served was perfectly matched and well balanced and the pricing was very reasonable and great value. Now that we have discovered this restaurant, they will see us very often!! A Big thanks to the manager for excellent service and delicious Indian food, we can’t wait to come back and try more dishes from your menu!
The Colonial is a British-Indian restaurant. I check out their Darlinghurst venue for mid-week dinner. When I hear British-Indian - i'm not sure what that means so I was curious. I get a preview of some of the new menu items. The Colonial is located in Darlinghurst, a short walk away from the main Sydney CBD. It's a small restaurant which is dimly lit. The staff are really attentive. For full review including photos, go to blog post.
Just so you know, we werr torn between giving the colonial a 3.5 or a 4... and i will explain why. We were kindly invited to the colonial so our score/review will not include pricepoints as we did not pay for our meal.
I am crazy about 2 cruisines, indian and middle eastern. I love the spices, i love the flavour, i cant stand the heat but i keep going back for more. I think im pretty confident in my judgement of indian food.
The colonial is more of an indian fusion, indian with a modern take. I had a tamarind martini and it was a bomb, a very unique and beautiful taste with a kick. Chicken tandoori salad was beautiful (the chicken was so tender and flavoursome), i loved the paneer spring roll!! Such a great idea. Oh and not to forget the watermelon and feta salad... that was a very interesting and bizarre dish. Not a typical indian dish but quite refreshing.
I unfortunately wasnt too keen on the dessert and i love desserts, i have had kulfi many times but its never wowed me. The kulfi at the colonial was probably the best ive tried so far, however im not sold. I did not enjoy the malai i think its a strange acquired texture.. ive never tried thr malai before so i dont have anything to compare it to.
Overall i enjoyed the food, i felt that what we tried were the more fusion dishes with some traditional dishes. I love that the colonial is being experimental and modernising indian cruisines to something everyone can enjoy. But me being me, i love traditional indian food (which the colonial do serve as well) and i dont think i would to ve honest order indian fusion other than perhaps the martini and paneer spring roll. On the other hand, sam would definitely order the fusion dishes. Id give the colonial 4 for innovation, however just based on what i had that night, i enjoyed it, it was yummy, but it didnt quite hit home run for me

+3.5
The colonial offers a British Indian dining experience with some unique and refreshing combinations.
I was surprised to see a selection of salads on the menu including watermelon and feta, green salad with chicken and a chicken tikka salad. These were all light and fresh.
For mains we had a duck masala, salmon dildar and a tofu vegetarian curry with rice. The dishes really needed some naan bread to soak up the flavors in the sauce. Be sure to try the paneer spring rolls here - they were our pick of the night.
If you are still hungry sample some of their desserts - we recommend the pistachio style ice cream
A British/Indian restaurant in Darlinghurst. Find yourself a car spot in the back streets and head on in. A large space, no fuss decor - some location themed wallpaper and a semi open kitchen. We were there to sample a menu in a small group. For entrees we tried the chicken sakke on little skewers and some spring rolls - I haven't had spring rolls like this before; they were a great and had a flavoursome filling. This Indian restaurant also does salads and we tried the watermelon and feta salad, the green salad (cucumber, celery, lettuce) and the chicken tikka salad - I really enjoyed the chicken tikka salad and the watermelon one was quite good to break up the richness of the food. For mains we tried the 'anglo-Indian duck masala (bones still in it made it difficult to eat), the salmon dildar and saag paneer. Curries had well developed flavour. I would have liked to have some naan or papadums to soak up the curry. I'm not much of a dessert person myself but they do offer Ras Malai, Kulfi (pistachio ice cream) which the group liked and sticky date pudding. Nice flavour but more like a cake than a pudding as it needed to be self saucing.
They have a bar and serve beer, wine and spirits.
It must be popular as by the end of the meal, we moved on quickly as a massive group of Indian tourists came in for a banquet, and they'd also been in the night before! Not too pricy and the staff were kind. Thanks to the venue for their hospitality.
So, my better half tells me he went to this weird Indian restaurant on Crown Street that serves kebabs, a roadie truckstop diner, but made into a hip Eastern Suburbs location. He didn’t love it, but I was sufficiently intrigued to suggest it to my pal, A, for an easy meal. I also noticed that there was a coupon in the Entertainment book.
We came here with a Groupon voucher of a curry main and drink for 4 people so I brought my parents here who were visiting from overseas and have never been to a Indian restaurant before.
As it was Saturday lunch time, we were initially the only diners which was fine as my son was a bit restless due to hunger. We ordered some extra food from their menu as I wanted my parents to try a few more dishes. So we started with the tandoori chicken and samosa which was a good way to start our lunch. We loved the sauce the tandoori chicken came with.
Our mains came with rice, naan bread, butter chicken and lamb vindaloo which had a slight kick. My son was a bit fussy today and refused to eat the butter chicken which he usually enjoys, but he did enjoy the cheese naan. My husband and I thought the butter chicken sauce had a slight funny after taste. Still, we were all very full and couldn't finish everything on our plate.
Situated at the intersection of Crown and William street, the first impression of The Colonial was big and bright. Dining area was lined straight up against the two walls with ceiling to floor mirror on the left hand side and traditional Indian black and while posters on the right. The ambience looked already inviting before we even sat down and checked out the menu. We had ordered takeaway from here before and liked it, that prompted us to eat in on a Friday night on the spur of the moment. As most of Indian experiences, we started the night with papadum in a refreshing minty sauce. For entries we ordered mixed platter with a bit of everything – tandoori chicken, kebab, lamb cutlet, and samosa. I couldn’t faulty any of it, they were all tasty in the own right. For main we had chicken vindaloo and chicken Jalfrezl. Vindaloo was supposed to be the hottest curry but it usually toned down in Australia for untrained palette. Unsurprisingly our vindaloo from the night was certainly mild at best. What we didn’t know was native Indian people usually let the restaurant know at the time of ordering that they wanted the “authentic” version in order to get that truly burning experience. I wondered how hot it would get but wasn’t going to find out. I always prefer Jalfrezi over other curry varieties because it wasn’t cooked in coconut milk or cream. For me the spices stood out more in that way. Other than the mild approach of vindaloo, both dishes were on point and satisfied our curry craving, mainly my partner’s to be fair. The service was swift and efficient. I could see us come back or get takeaway again from here.
Seriously amazing Indian food. Service was a little but slow due to new waitress but was very well looked after by the manager! Food exceeded expectations! We enjoyed the chilli chicken and goat curry! By far the best Indian we have had in Australia!
Probably the best indian delivery we've had since moving to Sydney. It did take quite a while to get to us (75 minutes), but the curries were delicious. I wished the Naan we ordered was a little bigger and a little less soggy, but I don't think anyone has figured out a way to transport it without it getting steamed out.
Definitely recommend for a night in.
Tommy H thought this was an absolute star. Too often he had ordered lamb at a restaurant and found two things wrong with it: firstly, that it has too strong a lamb odour that it becomes unappetising after a few bites; and secondly, that it is overpowered by extraneous flavours, particularly saltiness or sweetness.
The Butter Chicken was very tender and delicious. I could taste all the different flavours and spices jumping around in my mouth.
I was very impressed on how the Colonial restaurant was very well-presented. You can have the option of enjoying the usual Indian dishes or Tapas-style dishes with Indian influence.Chicken Tikka Masala was promoted as Britain’s National Dish! So, we felt we really must get that. It was a well-balanced dish with capsicum, onion and tomato sauce. We felt that the best dish of the day was the Mango Chicken. Cooked in mango pulp liquor (you can have the non-liquor version), this dish had the perfect recipe to be my favourite: sweet, tasty and flavoursome.
Lovely gem in darlinghurst! Staff were nice and informative. We ordered the deer curry (forget the name), chicken tikka masala and a vegatarian curry, with a platter for a shared enter between four, with rice and 3 different naan breads.
We ate until we were full and still had remaining food!! The deer curry and nanas were the best! Chicken tikka was a little overly sweet but still heaps nice, and the vegetarian curry surprised my vegetarian mother who wasn't expecting much.
The beer they had was also the best I've ever tasted- so long Heineken, tooheys and the rest.
The one thing I could fault them with was the mango lassi- I was looking forward to this as the one I had at Darbar on Glebe www divine, but the one here was soooo sweet I had to dilute it 1:3 with water:.
Definitely will visit again!
Ask for it Hot. Finally a decent curry house.
Nice staff and food is both tasty and very hot (if you ask for it).
My new Indian favourite.
"YOU MUST GO FOR DINE IN OR TAKE WAY". My friend introduced this restaurant to me to go to.so glad he did because it was so delicious! Each dish was about in the range $15 to $17 All of the curries we had were packed with texture and taste.
there is good balance between the dishes in the menu with about half veg and half non- veg. Also not to mention the service was reasonably attentive. They always greet with very friendly smiles.
finally we got best curry house on crown.....
I will definitely be back :)
Excellent curry that suits pommie tastes staff fantastically friendly all just what sydney needs in an Indian restaurant
Great and very reasonably priced food. Fantastic service, the staff are very attentive and all have huge smiles on their faces. Was a delightful experience and will definitely be coming back!
Amazing food service and atmosphere!. Naan was doughy and delicious. Lentils were creamy, butter chicken was amaze. Waitress was lovely and helpful. Good Indian is hard to find but this place is great :)
Perfect experience. If you're after a great British Indian experience you can't go wrong with The Colonial.
