Review Mjolner - Sydney

Andrea Castañeda
I booked for my bf birthday and I got the most amazing experience here. He loved, I loved it. We loved it. The food is amazing and the staff is lovely! I can’t wait to go back. I understand why it is so famous- It’s a completely worthy experience to celebrate an special occasion or just to catch up. There’s a 2 hour slot like in every restaurant nowadays so if you and your mates arrive on time, everything will go as expected.

Unique dining experience! Delicious food. Fantastic service. We’ve taken a few different friends here and every time they are blown away from the moment you walk in. Staff really get into character and you feel immersed into the Viking world. The food is made to share. We loved the quail, pork belly, bone marrow, ribs, broccoli. Cocktail menu extensive, inventive and tasty. Super popular so bookings essential. It’s underground so there’s limited to no phone reception (just like the Viking days!). Plenty of free parking on side streets.

Received very good service from the staffs here, especially Kristie. She explained for us about the drinks and the foods very detail, very friendly and helpful. We had very good experience with this Viking restaurant for my partner’s birthday. Explore something that never tried before, special style of drinking beer by the horns. Will highly recommend people to try this place!

Awesome experience! The welcome shots, atmosphere and drinks really helped get you into character for the Viking experience! Ordered the bone marrow, venison tartare and whole ocean trout with baby potatoes and thoroughly enjoyed it all. Definitely a unique dining experience!

This was a dining experience. The atmosphere and wait staff made for a truely enjoyable evening. The mains were terrific and cooked perfectly, the meat was just so tender and flavoursome. The desserts looked great with the flaming pour over, but we're a bit of a miss in flavour and texture, and I probably wouldn't bother with then in the future. Highly recommend for a small group, but note that you will need to book well in advance to get a table.

It was a great interest to experience Viking dishes from there. However, I was disappointed with a couple of things... We ordered Fish for the main, which is supposed to serve Grilled Trout on the menu, but They served Snapper instead without any notice and we felt being pushed before finishing all dishes. I would recommend if you are interested in an exotic Interior Design or something new experience for drinks.. But not sure about dishes from there.

As a man that loves all things Vikings, this was a must to check out and can I say it did not disappoint. The drinking horns, the knives, the decor, everything was bang on. Firstly drinks, WOW, they had everything right for this period. Some very interesting cocktails and some very tasty meads. Secondly the food, This is where this place SHINES, the food was bang on with everything and I mean everything. The meat was the best. Super tasty, was cooked to perfection. The dessert was also perfect. Lastly the staff, They were very friendly and were always up for a story. We will be back and hopefully, check out the Melbourne one too. But what would I know I'm just a bearded guy that loves beer.

Speak easy Viking theme restaurant. Beer are served out of horn . We had a selection of knives for our meats. Our wait staff, Lucas, was great. Try this for something different. Portion is big, do share. Good for groups.

Visited with friends and the decor is pretty interesting. The staff are nice but had to wait a while before someone came to our table to take orders. The mead served in the horn is a. Ice dramatic experience. The best part of the dinner was the crispy broccoli.Tried their pork belly and roasted chicken along with a side of potatoes. The chicken was a bit dry but overall decent food.

Sydney is lucky to have Mjølner and as a passionate foodie, I’m glad we have Mjølner. It’s a must visit joint. The venue is one of the best I’ve seen in Sydney, and the beer glass/horn is the most unique thing I’ve seen. Bone marrow was fantastic, oysters were creamy like butter and pork was cooked beautifully. Service was top notch and It basically ticks all the boxes! I give this place 5 bears.

Everything's perfect. The ambience is awesome, properly Viking, really good concept. Food is outstanding, really good I loved the mussels and the ribs. Nice beer in a horn of course, a must. Beautiful staff!

In celebration of our 8th anniversary, we were looking for somewhere nice to go. Its become a bit of a tradition to go out somewhere special for our anniversary as you might have seen in last years post for 360 Bar and Dining. Following our trip to Melbourne where we had visited the bar section of Mjolner, our friend suggested that we go to Mjolner Sydney (Mjolner Melbourne also has both the restaurant and bar). I made the booking online, which after a few plan changes was easy to update.

Visited on a busy Saturday night, upon arrival we were quickly seated and provided with menu. I loved the Viking theme and ambience of mjolner, we were provided the option of an alcoholic or non-alcoholic shot in a horn cup, for our mains we were provided a selection of knives and daggers to choose from which is quite different and exciting.
Highlight dishes were the short ribs and the venison tartare. The short ribs were cooked so well and the meat was so tender.

The fish had too much bones, making it very difficulf to enjoy and messy to eat due to the bones.

Portion size was massive! Great for sharing, and a fun place to dine with a large group

Had high expectations for this place after reading reviews about the food and particularly outstanding service. Sad to see we didn’t experience this. Firstly , no complimentary shots were offered even though the tables around us were given them. Our waitress was unhelpful with our orders, never took our drink orders and drinks came out during our main (which was also a long wait) . Spilled our drinks from the horn as we were not warned to drink it slowly like the waitress we heard next to us warning her tables. when I tried to get the attention of our waitress she waved her finger to cut me off as she made her way to another table. After waiting forever for her to collect our bill we decided to walk up and pay as we wanted to leave but she ushered us back to our seats. Such service really affected our meal and we decided to skip dessert.

Food wise we ordered the gravalax and bone marrow - both were enjoyable.
For the main we shared the short rib and Brussel sprouts which was nice and tender and flavourful, however nothing outstanding.

I also found the rnb music a weird mix to this given setting.

Awesome Viking themed restaurant. Super fun experience - hidden underground restaurant with no sign (booking essential for restaurant!), waiter gave a complimentary toast in a horn cup and provided a selection of knives to choose from to cut our meats with. Service was prompt with meats cooked perfectly, sauces were used where appropriate with no fancy unnecessary components. Dessert was okay with an interesting 'parfait' that consisted of cream & gummy candy like chews

Arrived on time and waited 10 mins at the welcome desk before anyone acknowledged us. I had to walk up to the pass before I was told someone would be with us shortly.

Once we ordered drinks, we'd just started drinking them and one of the staff took a half drunk drink for our table and gave it to another table. Apparently was a miscommunication and he thought we didn't want it, but took a while for him to apologize. I think the other table kept drinking the drink even though it was half drunk.

We ordered quickly, ate fast, but still were told our booking time was up and we couldn’t order desert and would have to move to the bar. We spent a long time waiting for our table and for food to arrive. Restaurant was only half full when we arrived. They either need to speed up the time it takes to get food to the table and seat customers or extend the booking time.

Food was average, didn’t feel it was worth the price. We were talked out of ordering 4 mains for 4 people and left hungry. Really enjoyed the atmosphere and drinks, but not enough to recommend the restaurant to others due to the service and food.

Really hard to find haha sorta like a hidden gem! But the vibe is just so good, you can choose a knife as a weapon and can also choose to drink with a horn!
Postcards From Peta
This place is legit. I’ve been once just to the bar and got the cheese platter and cocktails. Scored a table for a Christmas dinner which was so cool. So much food to share. Cocktails flowing. Shots on fire. 🔥 Don’t waste your money on the expensive alcohol - concentrate on the food!

Came here on a Monday night and it was very busy. Nice to get a complimentary shot drink at start. Theatrical setup and you can even take a photo with the props. Food was great.

I came here to celebrate a birthday over the weekend and it was an enjoyable experience, The ambience first of all is amazing. Everything was true to the vikings theme from decor to cutlery, to the utensils for dining.

The food itself was good. We ordered the banquet menu since there was a large group and had a variety of food. I would not mind returning to try other dishes on the menu. I think a highlight would be the entree with the raw salmon. I ordered Fog of War for my cocktail and I liked it, tasted like a Calipo!

We also got to pick our utensils (knives) and although it looked fancy, I wish it was sharper. We really struggled to cut through our meat. The shot glasses were adorable and drinking out of a horn looks easier than done.

Drinks are on the pricier side explaining our large $2k bill but overall, I would come again for the experience.

Mjolner is one of the best places I’ve eaten at. The speakeasy plays along with its Viking / Thor theme very well. In terms of food, service, interior design and theatrics, everything was perfect. Upon being seated, you are provided with a complimentary drink out of a horn shaped shot glass.
I highly recommend this place!

Amazing experience. Very different to most restaurants I’ve dined at and the service here is quite spectacular. Restaurant is very unique with their ‘viking’ atmosphere. It was my second time here and it did not disappoint. I would definitely come here again.

A Viking-themed restaurant with delicious food and a great atmosphere. This was my first time to Mjolner - the boyfriend has recommended it multiple times since we started dating as he loves it here. We had the bone marrow for the starter. This exceeded my expectations and it is a sure favourite - I will definitely order it again. We shared 2 mains - pork belly and rotisserie chicken, and 2 sides - baked potatoes and brussell sprouts. Didn't expect anything over-the-top with the mains but they were quite filling and they did satisfy. The sour cream with the baked potatoes were fantastic and I had to ask for more. Never had brussell sprouts before my visit - can't say they'll be a regular in my kitchen but I didn't mind them. The size of the sides are big enough to share 1 between 2 people (waitress did mention this, but we greedily ordered 2 anyway!) We thought they could've had better choice of music - maybe something more Viking-like rather than 21st century R&B. I had mentioned in my OpenTable reservation that the booking was for a birthday (my boyfriend's). Didn't think much of it but then my boyfriend got a little gift from the staff which was a nice touch to our visit. Overall 5/5 would recommend.

Fun dining experience. Visited last year for my boyfriends’ birthday. We both loved it and the staff were extremely friendly (also great sense of humour!) and accommodating even though we took some time with our orders.

Definitely good for a date night or an occasion. Food did not disappoint.

Ambiance: amazing decor and atmosphere. It can be child friendly too. Very warm yet Viking dining style. Perfect for gathering with friends or family.

Food: amazing! Portion can be quite big as few of the dishes was meant to share. The marrow is good but portion is kind off small not enough for the toast that they serve. The beef ribs is so tender and tasty,
And the duck is succulent. Corn with chicken fats is ok but ntg extraordinary.

Service: friendly, energetic team.

Price: Reasonable for the amount of food and joy you’ll get from dining here. Highly recommended

What a great way to spend our anniversary. Staff were so friendly and professional. Food was great. Atmosphere was fantastic. They had a gift for us and a personalized card written by staff. Felt very special. Thank you. We will be back again.

Absolutely fantastic food and overall experience. I would gladly offer my soul to the meat Gods over and over again! The bone marrow and beef rib were definitely the highlights for me.

Stone, wood and dim lighting makes for a relaxing atmosphere to dine in. The cocktails were delicious, I had the a couple of the 'feeling meady', which was warm and spicy, without being overly sweet (which absolutely had to be served in a big horn). Dirty martini with a giant caper was refreshing. After the welcome drink, our entrees came out. The bone marrow was exquisite and decadent, served with bread to mop up any left over fat in the bone. Gravlax and prawns were nice, however the broccoli head was the other hilight, slightly charred, it had a nutty sweetness.
Mains included chicken, trout, shortrib and porkbelly. The trout was cooked to perfection, with delicate and sweet meat. For dessert, of note was the bone marrow, with chocolate and whisky. Unlike any dessert you will ever try, with a perfect combination of sweetness, fat and booze. I could have polished off a few more. All washed down with mead and a lovely selection of craft beer. Wait staff were always warm, friendly and attentive with smiles all around.
Excellent dining experience all around, serving dishes you would not get the opportunity to try at most Sydney restaurants. One of the best.
We came here to celebrate a birthday and was the perfect place for the occasion! You need to keep an eye out for their logo on the door as there is no name sign to indicate there was a restaurant here. Enter through the door and descend down the stairs to the bar and restaurant area. Decorated in all things Nordic. The service was excellent and personable. Nothing was too much for them and set the tone for the evening.

The main item of the 900g Rib Eye was the drawcard for us but more about that later. Another cool feature is that they bring a sheath full of knives and you get to choose your knife that you eat your main course with.

We also ordered some starters of Gravlax, Venison Tartare, and Half Shell Prawns to start off with. Each was beautifully presented and were all very tasty. Nice contrast of textures as well.

We then had the main dish of the Rib Eye and sides of Crispy Brussel Sprouts and Baby Potato. The rib eye was melt in the mouth and was presented with bone marrow. The jus was packed full of flavour. Brussel sprout were nicely charred and the potato were lovely as well.

Loved the honey and mead roasting drink served in a mini horn. The beers are also served in carafes and poured into different sized horns too. The atmosphere would be best described as Nordic underground cavern with a cool bar. The bill comes in card that has a viking ship pop up in it.

Thewhereto

Mjolner is a hidden gem within Redfern, only identifiable by its wooden door. The highlight of this restaurant is that they serve beer out of a horn which embraces Norse mythology & if you've watched Vikings on Netflix you'll know what I mean.

After being seated down at our table we were welcomed with complimentary mead shots as it was the tradition of the resturant.

The menu focuses on a great range of quality meat dishes, ranging from beef, pork, chicken & duck.

My recommendation from the main menu would be:

- Beast: Grass fed short rib, onion soubise, pickled rings & grass

The meat was soft and tender and well complemented with the onion soubise.

- Beast: Roast pork belly, cabbage, apple miso butter, seeded sauce.

It was a welcoming sound hearing the crackling when cutting into the meat. With the apple miso butter the crackling went well with the soft pork belly.

Also I recommend the baked potatoes with sour cream as a side dish to share with.
Overall it was an unique dining experience and definitely one to remember. Also make sure that you make a reservation as it is rare they will accept walk in's as this place is always booked out.

Such a good dining experience, drinks serve in a horn and you can choose your own knife. Also have a complimentary shot before meal. You can find thor’s hammer here. You can feast like a viking since the meat here are sumptuous and big portions, except the bone marrow of course. Anyway, the ambience is great, it’s relax environment, kids can dine in too although they don’t offer high chairs for kids. quality of food is great, but nothing out if the ordinary. Pork is cooked very well and beef is nice and tender. Brussel sprouts is great. value for money is okay, customer service is okay too. Overall, highly recommended. This restaurant is like a hidden bar tucked in cleveland street. But it’s easy to find, don’t ya worry.

Could Sydney really support two Scandiwegian restaurants where you go through a non-descript door and to a darkened basement for fantastic, modern Viking food? Well, the answer is no, as I found out that the Norsk Dor in the CBD was transformed into a cocktail bar in November 2017. Luckily, Mjølner is here to take its place, and man is the food good here (I’d read really good reviews already). If it wasn’t so good, I’d find the Viking theme a bit hokey: you get to choose your own scary looking knife for the meat dishes, you get a complimentary glass horn of mead at the start (and are instructed on how to say Skål!) and worst of all, the black corsettes they make the female servers wear look really uncomfortable for them. I hope they're not as bad as they look...

As you enter the door you question yourself if you are at the right place. You now have just walk into a Viking Narnia. Beautiful decor and medieval vibes. As we sat down we greeted with complimentary shots. Our beer was served in horns which felt as if we were Viking kings. Before digging in we needed to choose a range of assorted knives for main as if we were going to battle. Food was amazing and executed perfectly. Overall it was pricey but the experience was unforgettable. Another!
Roary Will Eat You
This restaurant had great food and the atmosphere was good buts it’s service let it down. Had a two hour booking apparently not advised when seated 15 min late and then the entire table was not served within the two hours. Told we couldn’t order desert and wine service was very bad. Manager just a rude person who needs to listen to the customers not quote time service levels of when food was delivered.

Basically we were ordered out of the restaurant and we would never go back. Will also tell everyone we know and as locals to the area all our life this will not bode well for referrals. Such a disappointing evening. Sometimes new fads become old really quick.

In my view “don’t bother” there are so many better places in Sydney

Food was good from what I “remember”. See, we booked tables for 13 to arrive at 830pm on a Friday. On prompt arrival, we were told the people before us are finishing dessert so just a little wait... fair enough, so we took some drinks at the bar.

9pm sat. Entrees... that took a bit longer, came out about 930... and they left out the Pigs Head Terrine as promised on the banquet.

1045pm... we were ravenous by this point after the paltry entrees which honestly would only satisfy if we were a group of women who eat modestly, not a crew of mostly men paying $70 a head for food.

By the time dinner came out, most of us were weary and I was completely wasted. I do not have the pleasure of having memory of eating cos I was imbibing what I wish could have been food instead.

I could sympathise for the management and say that we were a big group and it would have been more than they could handle, etc etc but... this is an even bigger restaurant who had multiple confirmations for our table size and attendance, at least a week in advance, with policy to charge if we cancel within 24 hrs.

I don’t recommend this restaurant for a big party AT ALL. Seems they can’t handle it, and didn’t even attempt to assuage our experience with snacks or freebies with their insane wait. Disappointing.

Amazing! Viking themed from decor to food and beverages. Went here for my birthday dinner, and the waitress gave us a shot of mead to begin the meal, very much appreciated. The food was absolutely delicious and the cocktails were strong and amazing! Loved everything about it and can't wait to try the Melbourne restaurant soon!

Extremely trendy little find. From street view all you see is a wooden medieval door which leads to an underground restaurant with a rich Scandinavian ambience and influence. The staff are absolutely awesome with a great knowledge of all their foods and drinks. The food is also really tasty. The lamb to share is a good choice. Also they serve beer in a horn with is bloody awesome.
@KeraBearEats
Mjolner is a solid 5! What a fantastic experience, impossible to find anywhere else.

Came here on a Wednesday at 7pm. This restaurant is only opened for dinner, but for good reason.

The entrance to Mjolner is via a very small and missable door that leads to a dungeon-like interior that is filled with Viking-like decor.

We started the night off with a small shot of Stone Skal, on the house. Who can say no a good tasting complimentary drink?

All meals are designed to share. Two small dishes, two mains, two drinks and one dessert is plenty to fill.

All drinks can be served in horns. So we got ours served in horns, duh!

We started off with the Bone Marrow. The portion is may be small, but packed with flavour. Amazing.

Before receiving our main event we got to choose hand-crafted knives to eat with. These are sturdy, attractive knives that really added that wow factor during dinner.

We got the special of the night which that day was the Lamb with almond paste and toasted hazelnuts and fried kale. Amazing texture combination (who doesn't like fried kale???), and with so much lamb that fell off the bone it was more lamb that we could handle!!

On the side we got the Brussel Sprouts with Ricotta and Parmesan. Wow! Anyone who thinks they hate Brussel Sprouts ain't tried it here!

For dessert we got the Apple Crumble Pie served with FIRE. They literally set the rum on fire. Our dessert did pack a punch as well!

As it was my partner's birthday we received a gift. I don't think if they do this for everyone all the time, but we really appreciate the gesture!

Highly recommended and will definitely be back!

Love the concept here and you get to select your own weapon of food destruction! Will definitely come back as we want to try other dishes, the marrow was delicious !

Roast bone marrow, cured wagyu tri tip, charred octopus tentacle, lamb chump | 3.5/5 ⭐ | $$$ | extensive cocktail list and drinks served in a horn .
.
.
Mjølner is Viking themed restaurant that is one of the most unique dining experiences in Sydney. Discretely located on Cleveland St without any notable signage, head downstairs to a refurbished tabacco factory where the owners have put thought into the Viking themed interior, winning many design awards. The stand out dish was the bone marrow, whereas as the other dishes were a bit lacking (lamb needed more sauce, octopus was not grilled enough). However it's a fun atmosphere, with a complimentary shot of mead, big knives to choose from and chilled hip hop playing. They even gave my partner a 3D pop up card and a Mjølner shot glass for his birthday.

Took a little while to find the entrance to the place if you weren’t observant enough. Everything we ordered were really delicious, the cocktails were unique and service was not too bad. Check this place out if you are into anything medieval.

I am reliably informed by my more cultured dining companion that the correct pronunciation is “me-yol-ner” rather than the “hmm-jol-nah” that I’ve been using to refer to this place seen it opened earlier last year. Though I later discover that the only reason she knows this information is due to being a fan of the Marvel films rather than a superior knowledge of Norse mythology. Regardless of however the hell you’re supposed to say, you kinda know what you’re going to be getting when you visit a bar and restaurant named after Thor’s hammer.
Lien Nguyen
Did you hear that? I think it was thunder! DID YOU SEE THAT? I THINK IT WAS LIGHTNING! There was something powerful stirring in the streets of Redfern. Cue Viking inspired food joint named after Thor's hammer - Mjølner. One would easily miss the entrance of this establishment but the depth of flavours from each dish was found with no sweat at all. My partner actually turned into a Viking as he downed honey mead and yelled something guttural. Bone marrow was intense. Lamb was moist and plentiful. Alcohol was consumed as if we had won a battle. Might as well have died in battle because the service felt like we were in Valhalla! Khoi Hoang

If you love good food and themed restaurants. You can’t missed this one based on Mythology gods, Vikings and especially THOR. Pushing through the hidden door, walking down the stairs, the lighting was dim and dark, with wooden tables and an old style bar, the surrounding felt like a hidden underground.

The look of Mjolner is great but the rap music playing did not suit.
We were a little disappointed to be given a menu that did not include those on their website.
The beans and potatoes were amazing but the $60 pork belly was at least 50%fat.
Was also disappointed that no soft drink is served.

Just what Sydney always needed, and a viking whisky bar come restaurant appears. Mjolner is one of the coolest openings of 2017. Situated on Cleveland St on the border of Surry Hills and Redfern, the bar is a little hard to find. Keep an eye out for the over 18 sign. Walk down some stairs into another realm, filled with hearty food, reminiscent of the Viking period and one of Sydney’s most comprehensive and diverse whisky lists. The space itself is like is classily set up, with Viking weaponry adorning the walls and we cannot forget Thor’s Hammer decanter taking pride of place at the bar. What a showpiece!
Picky Piggies
Mjølner is a viking-themed dungeon (I mean bar) nested in Redfern. From swords and armor to horn drinking vessels, every detail was carefully choreographed - that upon entry into the restaurant you feel you are time travelling to a lost world. This underground restaurant offers an extensive list of interesting cocktails and generous portions of meat dishes.

The Set Menu here is a DIVINE FEAST! We had a table of 6 and half of us were vegetarians which means we got the meat dishes + extra veggie sides to keep everyone happy (the original set menu only had 1 vegetarian dish so it was extremely kind of them to cater for all). The highlights of the set menu: Braised Eggplant (4.5/5), Cauliflower (4/5), Bone Marrow (4.5/5) and the Mascarpone Parfait (5/5). Clearly the ingredients were fresh from the farm onto the plate - everything was cooked to perfection and seasoned with an amazing medley of flavours and textures (loved all the hazelnut crumbs, macadamia crumbs and that horseradish aioli on the potatoes!). The only dish that was sub-par was the banana ice cream dessert which wasn't bad but definitely not as good as the INCREDIBLE mascarpone parfait. I could have eaten a bucket of that and died happy.

You won't be disappointed with the Thor-esque menu here!
Leon
Named after Thor’s mystical hammer, Mjolner is a Viking-themed farmhouse-style carvery and whisky bar on Cleveland Street. The golden-hued basement bar is decorated with dragon heads and wooden Viking ships and there were horn drinking vessels and monogrammed linen napkins

I started my meal with a complementary toast of mead, honey and vermouth which was poured in a horn-shaped glass vessel. The sweet, soft and smooth “skal” opened up my palate and tasted classy and very Viking.

My main, a beef short rib bone, is a delicious wedge of caramelised beef which could be easily picked with a fork. What was so special about this tasty beef rib was its tenderness and sweetness without being overcooked or unnecessary treatment with tenderisers. In other words, I could actually taste the natural sweetness and texture of beef ribs for the first time in Sydney (minus the gamey odour).

The drinks were awesome too. Eric the Red, which comprises beefeater gin, port, tomato, beetroot, horseradish, dukes, house pickled onion and spices, has a deep level of flavour. Crowned with root vegetable chips and chilli, the blood red cocktail is ingenious and delicious.

The sides and entrees were ordinary though. The cauliflower, served in burnt butter and pepitas, taste just like how they sound ($18). The pan roasted green beans, served with hazelnuts and garlics, were delicious but nothing spectacular.

Nonetheless, Mjolner serves probably the best carvery rib and fiery cocktails (There’s even one with fire -blazing glogg). I’ll be back soon - the female servers are so gorgeous, funny and friendly. 😍😍

My god this was a cool place! Only found out about it due to Facebook "suggesting" it to me that afternoon. Its basically a viking speakeasy. Hidden door in Redfurn. But it leads you to the coolest underground whisky bar and viking inspired restaurant. The waiters and bar staff were wonderful. You can get drinks in horns like the vikings used to drink out of. And you are given a knife of your choice when you order your meal. The food was lovely. Had pork belly and a chicken dish. With a eggolant side dish. All of it had great flavour. I definitely wanna go back if I can (I live in Melb)

I didn't like this place from the start. During the booking they asked for credit card details and threatened to charge $25 for every missing person. Then there was the menu. It was one menu on the website and a completely different one when we came there, both in terms of prices and the choice. And they had two different menus - one for the bar and another one for the restaurant. I don't understand why we couldn't order a meat plate from the bar menu. They might have their policies, and I am fine with that. But why the guys at the next table were able to order that meat plate? And then there were drinks - it was the highest markup on drinks I ever saw in Sydney. The absolute value was ok, but when you compare it to the actual serving size it was a rip-off even for a restaurant. The food was pretty uninventive and the size of the dishes was not impressive for a viking-styled restaurant. Initially, I wanted to give them a rating of 2 for the style, but when my son got food-poisoned after eating there I had no choice but to let everybody know that this is not the place I would recommend even to my enemies.

I was here with a group of 12. From the moment we were greeted to the moment we left the staff were OUTSTANDING. The venue is full of ambiance and the mood is set from the moment you find the door on the street.

We had the banquet menu but before food was brought out we were all given a toast with a shot of Honey Mead. Delicious...another please. Then we got to pick our knives for the meal. All handmade with different handles. Personally i LOVED this and it really got me in the viking mood and ready to eat.

We started with a few set entrees and the Bone Marrow was a big hit for a few while the others

devoured the beetroot slaw but the Gravlax was my personal pick.

The mains were Bird, Fish and Beast. We are 12 big sized guys and we worry with set banquets that there will not be enough food. But at Mjolner had just the right amount and EVERYTHING was delicious. The perfectly seasoned braised short rib fell off the bone in BEAST. The FISH was a little boney but even the non-seafood person on out table tried it and enjoyed it. BIRD was another dish that i could not fault and would of gladly had more of.

With a side of baby potatoes, which had the right amount of horseradish to give extra taste but not overpower, and also some crisp green beans.

Many fine choices with cocktails, wine and beer (served in a horn if you want)

When we originally booked and saw the menu we had a few people decide not to come and some who were unsure if it would be for them or what to expect. But the ones who decided to give it a go raved the most about Mjolner and were very very happy they came along.

Was it pricey? Yes, a little more that what i normally treat myself to. But it was worth it

If the drinks were a tad cheaper i probably would of drunk more too.

I can not praise Mjolner enough and not just the food. The staff made the entire night run smoothly and made it fun too. A great environment and cool vibe.

Obviously i HIGHLY RECOMMEND Mjolner to anyone i speak with now.

Quite an interesting place to visit but the wait is long.
We made a reservation for 8.30 for 6 people but ended up having an extra person turn up so had to wait another half hour.
A lot of novelty in the props and tableware these guys have so make sure you bring your best photography gear as the light is quite dim.
Service wasn't too bad and neither was the food.
A little bit expensive for what it was but I guess you can almost think of it as fine dining.
When you first get seated and handed a menu, the waiter suggests you eat like a Viking and 'feast' which is them pretty much encouraging you to order a whole heap from the menu.
I must say though that the lemon and macadamia dessert was to die for. This literally is the best dessert I've ever tasted in my life and would go back just to order the thing!
It can be a bit hard to find as there are no signs but the symbol of Thor's hammer should be a dead giveaway if you're struggling.
Definitely one to visit and would recommend it to family and friends.

So if you’re looking for a place where they idolise Thor and his Nordic ways, this is the place for you. From drinking beer out of a horn, to choosing your own “weapon” from an array of knives, this place and the novelty it provides makes you appreciate the emerging (and evolving) Sydney dining scene.

The menu is only one page but the flavours they pack into the mains is amazing. We ordered an assortment of meals ranging from the short rib (delicious!) to chicken (yum!).

The cocktails are decadent too. We ordered the Northern Lights, wines and beer (for the men).

The service was good and attentive. I would say the most difficult thing from the whole dining experience was finding the door to the front of this restaurant! Nevertheless the experience was great and I would highly recommend coming here. We loved it!
Does My Bomb Look Big In This
I have a lot of respect for owner Sven Almenning (Eau de Vie, The Roosevelt) when it comes to cocktails, so it was only a matter of time before I found myself at his latest venture, Mjølner. In terms of drinking options, this Viking-themed basement bar, which opened in March this year, did not disappoint. Named for the Norse god Thor’s hammer, the underground space is a veritable cavern of well-crafted cocktails. Despite the bar's whisky focus, what you’ll discover isn’t actually a whisky-heavy cocktail list. Beyond drinks like the Highland Hammer ($22/$30/$50) made on your chosen selection of Orkney distilled Highland Park Whisky (10, 12 or 18-year-old) it’s actually a very wide-ranging, please-all collection. The aforementioned whisky-based cocktail is quite exceptional. It is crafted to allow a clear expression of the spirit, tuned with blend of saline, turmeric, honey-laced oloroso sherry, dandelion and burdock, into a drink that should please those who like an Old Fashioned. By contrast, their updated Whisky Sour – the Smooth Valley Sour ($21) – made on...

Mjølner is one of my favourite venues of 2017. The attention to detail and love the owners have put into this venue makes it all the more special and if you love whiskey then there is no better place for you in Sydney. I will return for more of this Viking Valhalla. Þakka fyrir.
Full review is now up on Spooning Australia

Awesome little hidden basement venue - great if you're in the mood for something a bit different. The manager and wait staff are excellent... Friendly, attentive and approachable.

The food is delicious, meat focused as expected, and best done as share plates in groups if you want to bring costs down a bit....but don't forgo the chance to drink beer out of a horn!

The cocktails are intriguing and delicious if a little on the expensive side (stop at one before dinner if you are on a budget lol) . I would have given it 5 stars if the bar staff were as approachable as the wait staff (not to say they were rude), and if meat tray bread dish was available to eat at the restaurant and not as a Bar snack

A dark, cave like space serving Viking inspired food & drinks. Everything was delicious, portions are generous, service friendly & a great ambience. Loved the massive steak knife with the wooden handle!

A disappointing experience on a memorable night for one of our closest family members would be an understatement.

The restaurant in itself is quite decent and the service was a bit patchy throughout the entire night. Drinks were quite pricey but on par with other restaurants and bars in Sydney.

We had booked in for one of our closest friends birthday and had even mentioned it whilst making the booking. We were booked in for the second sitting at 9.00 pm on a busy Saturday night as that was the only available option and were amongst the first group for the second sitting. We were given the disappointing news that they had run out of the feature dish of the night at 9.00 PM???? How is that even possible when you have confirmed bookings for the entire night??? Isn't it common sense to have enough portions of your feature dish for the entire night and not just the first sitting of the night??

The food I have to admit was quite good but the experience was quite disappointing because of the whole episode especially when the majority of the party were looking forward to experiencing the feature dishes.

We were promised to have our drinks completely complementary but when it came to the end of the night and the time for settling the bill, this was not honoured which made it even more annoying.

We dine out a fair bit and will never recommend this place to our friends again ever!!

I could not recommend this restaurant/bar enough!
My mouth still salivates thinking about the beast feast at mjølner.
The whole experience starts with walking up to an unmarked Viking door, where you then enter to descend under the hull of a Viking long boat into the basement to be greeted by a fully themed bar. The staff are dressed the part in their Viking rags, and give amazing service.
Every table has a large drinking horn, but if your like me you need one all to yourself to drink a cocktail from.
There's an extension cocktail list which is split into spirit based sections for easy selection.
Mjølner is actually a whisky bar & if your a whiskey 🥃 enthusiast you won't be disappointed, with over 400 whiskies from around the world. And our waitress knew her stuff!
Our drinks however started with a horn shot glass full of Scandinavian goodness, the house specialty. Skal!
Then it was time to choose our weapons. While the fun steak knives were not very sharp, they didn't need to be as the meats were falling off the bone 🍖
I chose the beast.
This lamb chump was tender, juicy, pink in the middle & full of flavor
Surrounded with a pistachio pure that really set the dish.
I also pillaged some bird off of a friends plate (roast duck, beetroot, amaranth & orange).
Which danced in my mouth however I still chose the better dish of the two.
We tried multiple cocktails along with our dishes which were all an experience in themselves.
Our waitresses were amazing & only too happy to help, even with our large table full of dietary requirements & selective whisky tastes.

This themed bar is fun yet stylish, not tacky at all and good for a multitude of occasions.
You could pop in for a whiskey, have a night out on cocktails or an fun intimate dinner.

This Viking feast was definitely created in those image
Welcome to Valhalla!

I really wanted to love this place but it fell a bit short. The ambiance is great with a dark, moody atmosphere and Viking memorabilia everywhere. The service was a little slow to start with but picked up pace as the night progressed. The food was average and too expensive for the amount that you get. Amongst the 6 of us we shared 3 entrees, 6 mains and 5 desserts - so quite a number of dishes but we weren't full by the end of it. It was a unique experience but I wouldn't go back there again.

The prospect of eating at Mjolner, a Thor-inspired, Viking-themed restaurant created by the team behind the amazing Eau de Vie cocktail bar was an exciting one. Entering the basement, I was immediately transformed into another world. The site of a former tobacco factory, the space was dark and moody with exposed brick walls, various Viking themed memorabilia and of course, Thor's hammer (of which the restaurant takes its name from).

Loved everything from beginning to end. Finding this place from the street took us a while but once we got in, we felt welcomed. Our waiter was nice and friendly, and loved how you start with a shot. The food was awesome, the drinks and the ambience. Highly recommend those who want to try Viking food.

Bianca: A Viking-themed bar just exactly what the masses were yelling for surely? So I’m pretty sure I’m one of the last people on the planet to see the TV show Vikings. I have a great appreciation for Travis Fimmel, particularly his Calvin Klein modelling work circa 2002, I’m shallow, sue me! The rumblings of a restaurant/bar opening 100m away from my work was simply too hard to deny and with my Viking loving partner in tow, we descended into Mjolner.

“So there’s this place which is viking themed and you drink beer out of a horn.” Um hell yeah! That’s literally all it took to convince Noods, Kiren and Syl to visit Mjolner (mythical name of Thor’s hammer) in Redfern. We descend down the stairs and make our way through the dark, cavernous rooms, past the wall of meat ageing in the locker.

Went to Mjolner for a dinner with friends. A very exciting and unique experience. It's hard to find the door, but luckily our friends sent a photo of what it looked like. The viking atmosphere is very cool and they tried to put it through in everything. Except for the music maybe, which was poppy and unsuitable for the venue. Most of the meat was free range, which is a great pro for us. Had lovely food and wine. I do think it's too expensive for what you get though. We ordered quite a few dishes (a couple of starters, 3 mains, 3 sides) amongst the 4 of us and weren't full at the end of it but the dishes are quite expensive.

I have mixed feelings about this restaurant as I want to love it but it fell short. Let's start with the concept of the restaurant which is fantastic. I love the decor and stepping through a hidden door with Thor's hammer on the outside. It feels like you are stepping down into an underground cave/grotto with fabulous Viking inspired decor. However the music was loud, too loud. We could hardly hear ourselves talk.

As for the service well it was average, our reservation was for 9pm and we were left waiting to be seated for over 10 minutes as they forgot about us. We also had to ask them when our meal arrived if we could choose a knife as they also forgot to offer it to us. The service is on the slow side as we were waiting for over half hour for any food to be brought out. This usually wouldn't be an issue but as it was now 9.45pm we were starving.

The cocktail list is extensive and is compiled under the headings of different Viking Gods. They were inventive and beautifully presented and we loved drinking out of a horn I but wasn't a big fan of the actual flavours. Upon being seated we were offered a shot of mead and that was delicious, we ended up buying more to drink.

We ordered the ribs and the quail with a side of baby potatoes. The ribs were delicious, meaty and tender and was definitely the stand out. The quail was really difficult to eat and had hardly any meat on it, I'm not sure if I liked the orange and miso sauce as it was quite overpowering. The baby potatoes with horseradish cream were really delicious.

The dessert menu was limited and not very appealing. There was a choice of a rice pudding or a mascarpone and rhubarb parfait. We chose to have dessert back at our hotel.

I would go back as I would like to try more of their menu but probably not on a Saturday night as it was too loud and busy.

Fantastic themed venue, decor, food, beverages & service were all exceptional. Highly recommend sampling whiskey from Thor's hammer! Great for groups or couples with shared dishes including vegetarian.

Great venue to bond with friends over drinks! Decor lives up to the theme. Very cosy and discreet. Extensive cocktail menu, some being welcome twists on old favourites. Great selection of whisky if you're so inclined. Left myself in the hands of the expert, was not disappointed.
Mead! Where have you been all my life? Will be introducing this honey beer to my friends.
The staff were welcoming and very accommodating to all the queries I had.
Food is great! Simply broken into poultry, fish, vegetarian.
Top shelf charcuterie worthy of a try.
Wish I could have tried more of the cocktails. Complimentary aperitif was quite generous.
Obviously on the more premium side of the bar scene. All in all had a great experience! Skal!

Cocktails 💯
Food 👎🏼
Service 👎🏼
Value 👎🏼👎🏼

After seeing all the hype online, had dinner here and overall disappointed. The decor is awesome with such attention to detail, shame the same can't be said of the food or the service.

The duck was surprisingly tough, hard to cut even with the special heavy duty Viking knives and came with thick centimetres of unpleasant solid fat under the skin. Side potatoes and carrots were ok, cauliflower was good but found all sides quite creamy without something to cut through the richness.

Lots of well meaning staff but found actual service lacking, for example somehow no waiters could find a food menu. At dinner service. Prebooked. Shared one grease stained menu, eventually.

Overall spending $170 for two was expensive and mediocre, gimmicks couldn't make up for flaws. Visit for a cocktail and the novelty of drinking from a horn, but be prepared to wait.

There's a choice between 1 course ($35), 2 course ($55), 3 course ($70) or you can simply go al a carte. We. opted for 2 course each, which means we get to choose 1 starter and 1 main. each. You also get to choose your own Viking dagger to use for carving your. You need to order their roasted bone marrow ($20 al a carte)!
