Review Ciccone & Sons Gelateria - Sydney

Jason Lau
One of my favourite ice cream joints in Sydney. I ordered two scoops - honeycomb and coconut. I wish I could have tried more of the flavours!

Don't you just love bathing in the hipster juice that floods the now of Redfern? You can choke on the stuff. There's lots of good amongst the mission brown and 1978 Pelaco poly cotton shirts. This place fits right in. Slender, retro fit out, that tries harder to be 1950s Carlton, than a faded Sophia Loren poster. The flavours are as now as a rapid antigen test. Only problem is..they're good..not great. In a town blessed with quality gelato, their bitter chocolate sorbetto is good, but isn't particularly either, compared to rivareno or mapo, cow and moon or even Messina. The maraschino cherries are decent, but swim in a sweet vanilla compote that isn't especially creamy or vanilla laden. It's not bad at all. In fact, it's good, and the portions big. It's just not in Sydney's top 5. Don't tell the hipster kiddies though. They seem so happy here.

This is one the best gelato in Sydney. The milk flavor is good and I’d like to try the tiramisu and coffee flavors too 🍦

We tried watermelon&rose and pistachio. Both were so good. Their gelato is quite different from other shops, so unique. Definitely I'll visit again. And thank you for friendly service👍

Very smooth and creamy gelato with wide range. Flavours are a bit subtle but still quite good

Love the old school, unassuming vibe of this ice cream joint. Ordered the black sesame and pistachio. The flavours didn't jump out at me at first but it got better with each mouthful

Been going to Ciccone for years and it’s still our fav. The gelato is consistently good. They do the nut flavours really well along with a great honeycomb, buttermilk and passion fruit, strawberry, matcha, banana and chocolate. I also love their sticks! Was lucky to get my hands on a banana stick once and it was soooo good with the caramel coating. My husband and I have gotten to know Sean and Mark, they are lovely people. They work hard and are passionate about making good quality gelato.

We had gelato on Sunday night - one of the only places in Sydney open late! The guy was closing up but could not have been nicer to us, explaining flavours and waiting around to serve us - a group of 10, im pretty sure he stayed open just to serve us. I had the raspberry sorbet and my friend has tiramisu - both amazing! The icecream is great, original & they change the flavours around & the staff are great. A hidden gem of Sydney and open late.

Just tried your gelato for the first time: chocolate; lemon; and buttermilk/passion fruit - I am amazed. Gelato is such a thing at the moment and your's is the best by a long way.
Hugh Boyd
Small, local, owner-operated, and damn fine gelato! What else do you want? Also, gelato flavours rotate regularly. Swing by around Fathers Day to pick up the Whisky-flavoured gelato. You'll probably see me there...

Hands down the best gelato in the world - trust me I've done the leg work!

Best in town , don’t miss this place . Range and quality are amazing

There’s quite a variety of flavours available but none of the flavours were very that interesting in my opinion. I really liked the texture of the gelato though - very smooth and fluffy. The flavour was very strong though - hazelnut taste wasn’t prominent but really liked the passionfruit one!
Rating 4.0 Really is one of the best ice cream/gelato in Sydney. Feel it’s more ice cream for adults, more mature, in that flavours are classic and not just a trend or the latest fad. My pistachio & hazelnut scoops were fluffy creamy and very nutty. Very unlike most of the other prominent gelato places. I really enjoy them.
Christine Rahardja
The place and the taste of ice cream is so authentic, original, and fresh ingredients. Been here few times and never fails to satisfy my sweet palate. I like their coffee, black sesame, milk jersey ice cream flavour. Sooo Devine... next time I want to try the banana splits, hope it is good

I was a little put off by not seeing a tiramisu flavour on the menu but they certainly go all out on the flavours that they make. Very dense smooth ice cream with a lot of the main ingredients - the coffee one was on the verge of being bitter. Good for takeaway because it's so cold and hard but the takeaway packs were awful, hard to get apart and paper was stuck to the ice cream.
Patti Friday
LOVE this place. This is honestly next level gelato, so fluffy, yet dense, and not overly sweet. Both times I've been I've just chosen from the scoop menu. Some faves are the honeycomb and the buttermilk passionfruit, but I definitely need to try a sit-down sundae though with and amaro.

My favourite gelato in Sydney. Modern, well balanced flavours that aren’t sickly sweet. The passion fruit and buttermilk is an absolute standout and must have!
Does My Bomb Look Big In This
My mate had been urging me to visit Ciccone & Sons for ages. One bite into their creamy Buttermilk & Passionfruit ($7/2 scoops) and I was kicking myself for not listening to her sooner. Set on busy Regent Street in Redfern, the simply furnished gelateria has an old-school appeal. With a retro-styled gelato cart sitting in the doorway, the long thin room is decked out in burgundy and cream; furnished with wooden church pews and round, marble-topped tables. Bucking the trend of mounds of colourful gelato to lure in the patrons, co-owner and gelato-maker, Mark Megahey, has opted to use pozzetti, traditional Italian cylindrical containers buried deep inside the counter. You’ll understand why when you roll this gelato around in your mouth – it has a wonderful, textural mouthfeel, with absolutely no ice-crystals. With nothing to look at, you’ll be deciding on your sweet treat by flavour alone. The day’s small-batch selections are...

Cool little gelato bar in Redfern selling gelato in a cup or cone as well as shakes. I had cashew and jersey milk gelato in a cone - absolutely amazing and one of my top two gelato stores in Sydney.
Ms Picky On Coffee
Pretty decent ice creamery. It wouldn’t be my favourite (because I prefer more dense texture etc), but if I have to be objective, their ice cream and varieties are great! Very creative and tasty choices. As for their service though, it would be my favourite :) one of the friendliest and welcoming service you can find in Sydney.
Eatwithmyfoodsafari
An unassuming gelateria located on Regent Street. There is a small seating area and the flavours on offer are not too flashy. There is a small selection available but they’re executed well. Service is friendly.

Had the Jersey Milk and Coffee. They utilised Sungold milk and has a very nice mouth feel to it. The Jersey Milk is the classic vanilla and is done well. The coffee had a nice hit of caffeine to it.

Well worth a visit here if a dairy treat is required!

Lived across the road from these guys for a year and I don't think I will ever find better neighbours! Best icecream I've had outside of Italy! The banana and tiramisu flavours were my favourite. A testament to how good these guys are....they made me LOVE chocolate icecream! Going to miss them a lot but will make a special trip down to the store whenever I'm in Sydney! Come to Melbourne please!

So glad I was told about this little place otherwise I may not have discovered it as it is tucked away. Gorgeous little old school gelato place with only a handful of flavours. I had the lime cheesecake one and I have to say it was one of the best ice creams I have ever had. So creamy and the flavour balance was perfect. Staff were friendly and so proud. I will go back for sure.

Finally got a chance to visit this place after hearing about this for almost a year from my bae. A girls night out would have been incomplete without visiting this. The tiramisu icecream was outstanding. Loved it!

I am Italian and a gelato lover. I must say I really liked this gelato, but maybe it is a bit too creamy for me. But it is my taste; I like gelato with less cream in it. Anyway, very nice and fresh, and not too sweet.

A lovely Gelateria place on Regent St. The service is very friendly and the gelato looks and tastes great. I absolutely liked the watermelon & rose sorbet. Perfect on a hot day!

BEST GELATO IN SYDNEY!!! Their gelatos
are always rich and extremely creamy!! And excellent choices of flavours. And the guys there are super friendly too. I have been back twice in a month! Buttermilk and passionfruit is a must try!
I'm Hangry
I almost walked past it that night – it’s not a huge joint and having been trained by Messina to associate gelato with hoards of people waiting outside, Ciccone & Sons was remarkably quiet.

There is also a much shorter list of flavours, around 10 of them. But menu size need not be everything, because the gelato I had that night was the best and most refreshing gelato I have had in awhile. I tried the buttermilk and passionfruit and the coconut...

To continue reading, go to imhangryweb.wordpress.com/2017/04/26/ciccone-sons-gelato-in-redfern/

Delicious gelato, better than expected. The hazelnut flavour and buttermilk passion fruit was amazing.. Zomato is stupid I just wanted to put a quick review but it needs to be 140 characters long...stupid move

So far we've tried Hazelnut, Buttermilk and Passionfruit, Spiced Orange and Black Sesame and every time it was perfect! Generous servings, flavours never too sweet, always perfectly balanced. I've tried many gelato places in Sydney and this one is now my favourite. Can't wait to go back.

Not only Messina has opened a shop 15 min away from where I live, but our new Buddhist centre is very, very close to Ciccone and Sons. So close, you don’t get to burn any calories walking back and forth. I’ve only been once but I already know this is the best gelato I’ve had so far. I tried two of the flavours that were recommended by a friend: buttermilk + passionfruit and black sesame ($7 for the 2 scoops). Yes, maybe not the greatest combination but I loved both flavours. It’s good to keep in mind that the scoops are massive.

Old school gelato run by really nice dudes who used to run the gelato at Bar Italia. Super good vibe and excellent quality gelato with out any gimmicky frills. Also made in some really beautiful old Italian gelato churners. This is the real deal.
I Ate My Way Through
Ciccone and Sons Gelato in Redfern is a simple, no nonsense gelateria who have just celebrated their first birthday. Everything at Ciccone and Sons Gelato is housemade. They don’t use any pre-mades or packages. They personally know the suppliers of their ingredients from the milk to the produce, which leads to a familiar and welcoming product.

The gelato at Ciccone & Sons is made with seasonal, real ingredients. My favorites have been black sesame, tiramisu, lemon, and mascarpone. By far my favorite gelato in Sydney.

Madonna Ciccone! Very tiny place, not the typical gelato shop you would go to but a surprisingly good ice cream. We had been trying different places in Sydney and were always disappointed; we started thinking we would never find an ice cream almost as good as our favourite shop in Milan, but we were wrong! 😋 you can't go wrong at Ciccone, every flavour is great, from Matcha green tea, Black sesame, to chocolate: good, smooth and soft (and very generous servings!) - just thinking about it makes me want to head back!!

As a self-proclaimed gelato junkie, it was highly unusual that I hadn’t yet made a trip to new-ish gelateria Ciccone and Sons in Redfern. I referred to it as ‘newish’ because the gelateria has been open since last year. I came here on a Friday evening. Ciccone & Sons is a small batch producer, and the owner makes all the ice cream himself, meaning that sometimes flavours will get sold out. In this situation, it’s stated on their Instagram account that they will close early if everything is sold out. I dreaded this, as I made the walk from Redfern station to Ciccone and Sons. I was pleased that my efforts for coming to Ciccone & Sons were rewarded though.

Well this was a delight, hey. What a lovely, quaint, local joint... with super delicious, freshly handmade gelato.I really appreciated the Italian, 1950s vintage decor. A great touch that popped the cherry on top on our yummy gelati. Actually I stand corrected, what topped it all was being served by a heavily inked bloke who scooped generous (and pretty!) servings..

Been meaning to come here for so long because 1) they're really close to where I live and 2) I keep hearing they're the best. But we're die hard Messina fans so didn't really feel the need to stray. Especially after past disappointments (eg. Cow and the moon). I got matcha and black sesame. Delicious. Really delicious. Strong flavours. Loved both. My partner got coffee (as he always does) and chocolate. He loved both. Personally, I liked the coffee. They grind up beans and then blend with the coffee. So you see coffee grains all through the gelato. Really nice in an unusual way (you can taste the coffee beans). The chocolate, nup, not for me. Not sure why but I just didn't like it. But that's ok as I have my favourites. Definitely returning.

Hazelnut is amazing too!!

Gelato + Pepe Saya: I was predisposed to *love* Ciccone & Sons based on those two words alone but unfortunately, I left a tad underwhelmed. The cinnamon was quite nice, strong but not overpowering. The pistachio, my usual benchmark, missed the mark completely. It tasted like a milk/vanilla gelato with chunks of pistachio folded through. Might be better if they rename the flavour. Having said that, the texture is terrific. Smooth, creamy and melts quite quickly (which is apparently the sign of good gelato). The shop is no-frills and small so seating is limited. I'll be returning to give the other flavours a shot, particularly the buttermilk passion fruit (will steer clear of pistachio)

Tiny shop beside the grocery store. Not your typical gelato shop like Messina or Gelatissimo as the gelato's aren't directly displayed out for customers to see. Limited flavors. Tried the pistachio and was very disappointed. There was a lot of pistachios but were off flavor. Tossed out after a few spoons.

If you on a stroll around Redfern and need a sweet something you should stop in at Ciccone & Sons for a gelato.

Great choice of fresh flavours.

Hello
As I was about to walk into the Ciccone and Sons gelato bar (Waterloo) to buy my family some delicious ice cream the retailer stopped me at the door preventing me from walking in. The man asked me if he could ask me a question, and I replied in my usual happy voice "yes". He then asked me why I had parked my car illegally. I asked him why there are so many witches hats preventing local people from pulling over to do their shopping. I then said I have my dog in the car. Dogs are not welcome in the shop and so I was following their rules. Waterloo prides itself on giving the local people warmth and friendliness. Fair enough I did park illegally for about 2 minutes. What business is it of his though? I did not get to buy the ice-cream as I was shocked by his hostility. Hence they have missed out on my money and possible future purchases as I now feel hesitant to go back there. Why can't people mind their own business and stop playing the role of police man. I wonder what his point was, whether he felt satisfied with projecting his hostility onto a customer, only to create a non sale as well as a disappointed customer who will most probably not return as well as warn other locals. Happy New Year! Try spreading the Love considering what is going on around d the world.

Kind regards Jane Louise
Email Janelouise2@icloud.com

What sets apart Ciccone & Sons from so many other gelato makers is their use of jersey milk for a creamier texture. They also make all of their flavourings inhouse, avoiding the use of any pre-made bases or pastes. The small batch gelato run - made using two old-fashioned Carpigiani churners - means flavours are often exhausted before the day is out.

That means the chest freezer of gelato changes daily with occasional wackier flavour combos including pear and riesling; lavender and white chocolate; cucumber and rosemary; and lemon and maple. Seasonal specials so far have included whisky brulee for Fathers Day, pumpkin and burnt butter for Halloween; and burnt butter and gingerbread for Christmas. If you can't decide, they'll happily provide tastings to help you choose - although most of the time, this tends to only complicate, rather than simplify matters!

Absolutely loveee this place! All the gelato and sorbeto made on site!! We tried fragola (strawberry) and coffee flavour - its just like the ones in italy!!!!!!
And the portion size is really generous - 2 massive scoops for $6.5!!

Redfern is never gonna be the same with the addition of Ciccone and Sons on Regent st.. All flavours are hand crafted using fresh products and made daily in house. You can see some classic flavours like vanilla and chocolate on the menu everyday but the other interesting flavours keep on changing.. The gelato texture was so creamy smooth and refreshingly light! Tried their Zabaglione, Croccantino (almond and hazelnut praline) and Salted Cashew.. I could say the latter is my personal favourite! A sweet and salty combination with cashew nuttiness make this flavour so irressistible!
The croccantino flavour is made with hazelnuts and Almond praline..

After our big dinner we were contemplating on dessert, but as we were close to this new gelato store (apparently opened for 4 months) we decided to try it as it was sort of on the way back home. Plus as my husband and I were gelato fans, how could we not try a new place!

As it was still early it wasn't too busy and there are some seating inside the shop along their walls. The two staff were friendly and they let you try their flavours before you buy. While their flavour options are limited and more simple they are smooth, creamy and generous in size.

For 1 scoop it's $4, 2 scoops $6.50 and i forgot to take a photo as I was too busy eating my scoop of mascarpone & strawberry which was really nice and for 1 scoop it was massive. My husband enjoyed their salted cashew but thought their honeycomb was average.

Overall, I'm glad we tried this place and if we are in Redfern, we would swing by as I heard their flavours change weekly.
Redfern’s coming right along with plenty of good eats and bars in the area. From small bars: The Dock, Arcadia, Bearded Tit and Angry Pirate Bar to Redfern Continental – there’s a buzz and growing food scene here. New to Regent Street is Ciccone and Sons Gelateria – a small batch artisanal gelato joint by Mark Megaher and Sean O’Brien. With about 10 flavours on offer, Ciccone and Sons does sell out if you check out their instagram – its that boutique. From Classic flavours of Vanilla, chocolate to the more interesting salted cashew and Buttermilk and Passionfruit – there’s plenty of reasons to pop back in least of which is the $4 single scoop. A winning price point that impressed especially when you’re looking at just how good these are.

A little ol skool gelato joint tucked away in Redfern.
Excellent gelato here and they use Pepe Saya's Mascarpone & Buttermilk.
Must also try their sorbetto - fruity refreshing delights - would be perfect for summer time.

If you think Messina and Cow Moon are too sweet, this is the place to get your gelato! It is a small shop but with big bold as well as traditional flavours. I had the chocolate, vanilla and coconut sorbet. They change it up weekly. You could tell they used real ingredients and the texture was not too soft and had some bite to it...just how I like my gelato! It is not too sweet either! The guys here are great too! This is definitely my new favourite gelato joint.
