Still very happy with the food, everything except maybe the mango pancake seemed top notch dim sum. The prices are high enough to demand it though (put it a bit below Din Tai Fung for quality and price) and the harassment of the cart ladies was really irritating, especially as they didn't have the range that they used to (both might be due to the current conditions).
Yum cha in Sydney
This is a great spot to have yum cha in Sydney. The servers were friendly and the dishes were all lovely - although we did have a bit of trouble with the dumpling skins. The dumplings seemed to stick to each other and to the bottom of the steamer so you couldn't get them out of the steamer without breaking them. It's very reasonably priced by Sydney standards and I would certainly be happy to bring my fussy Malaysian-Chinese mum here!!

Yum Cha on a Saturday or Sunday for lunch is hard to beat. There’s something about this grazing style of eating that just seems right. Marigold sits in the Haymarket/Chinatown district and spreads out over two floors. To say it’s big is an understatement. The trolleys for yum cha come regularly and there is plenty to choose from.
Stopped by for lunch on a quick work trip. Was craving authentic dishes, and Marigold did not disappoint. Each of the dishes were tasty and fresh. The zhaliang was the definite winner. Service was efficient and polite.
I dined here for a work team lunch. We had quite a large group but that didn't impact on the consistent service. There was always plenty of food available and a decent variety. My favourite dishes were the prawn dumplings and the braised chicken. Would recommend visiting in a large group to save more per person as most dishes are designed to share. The restaurant itself is quite large and at the time we visited, it was only at half capacity. Conveniently located in Haymarket.
Absolutely amazing. Cosy, well-mannered staffs, and delicious food! This is, by the way, not easy entry level of restaurant. This is indeed the occasional luxurious place to go. I went there with my colleagues and we ended up paying over $300. It was satisfying so no complaint.
The dishes were absolutely amazing! Even though Marigold is on the expensive side, the food lives up to its standards. Highlight was definitely the mango pancake. It had a big piece of super sweet mango and not too much cream which was the perfect combination.
Whilst Melbourne is not short of yum cha venues, I always look forward to the Marigold yum cha when I visit Sydney. I love that it opens at 10am, and the enthusiasm of the ladies trying to entice you to choose the dishes from their trolley! Chiu Chow dumplings are particularly good, as are the spring rolls and the egg tarts.

Yummy dimsums! 😋❤️😋 Though you gotta ask around for what u want to come to your table (if they are really busy though). I personally love their Lo Mai Gai so much!
Marigold is an institution in Chinatown, the Mecca of Sydney yum cha scene. It is packed out every weekend. No exceptions on this Sunday lunchtime. My friends got there just in time to get one of the remaining tables so we didn't have to wait. It was a bit cramped jammed right by the wall, with trolleys squeezing pass us and the opposite tables. Aside from this, service was prompt, lots of different trolleys & variety of food came past. We had a number of the yum cha favourites, har gows, egg tarts, steamed rice rolls, tripes, pork ribs & congee. Quality were all pretty good, which is the reason this place remains busy every weekend.
A really busy restaurant on a Sunday morning. Despite the business, me and my friend got seated very quickly. Carts were being pushed around the restaurant and you get to choose your dimsum! (Very authentic way of having dimsum)
I really love their hargaw. It's a must-get as the prawns come in whole and the taste was on point.
Mini polo buns were really good as well as its filled with creamy custard.
Durian puffs were just okay. I don't taste a lot of the durian as it's a slightly overpowered by the custard filling. However, the pastry was really good tho 👌🏼
- Foods are really great but it is hard to communicate sometime as most of the staffs speak little English.
- They opens until late (About 3pm something) unlike other yum cha place so I love to go there for my Brunch.

I realised early on when I first arrived in Australia, that dining in Chinatown can be a bit of a hit and miss experience, predicated in large part on whether you're on friendly terms with the waitstaff and management. Marigold is perfect for me because the service is excellent (well, they know me, so that helps, but I think they're pretty good with everyone anyhow) so I can relax and not worry about being ignored etc. Plus they do the best ngau chap (cow's innards) this side of Hong Kong, that I've experienced thus far.
Quality! It Shouldnt Be That Hard! Love A Wonderful Mouth Full Of Wholesome FOOD!

I have been here twice now, the first time was for yum cha, I remember it was good.
This time I came for a girls night out there was 6 of us... one of the girls suggest 38 dollar per person set menu. I was like ok sure. When I looked at the menu I though it didn’t look to crazy but when the food came out and didnt stop I was shocked. Such great value if you have a big group...
First came the First entree it was san choy bow,
It tasted maxing. The waiter even served them all out....
The next entree was a mixed entree.
Dim sum, spring roll, and some prawn thing...
They all tasted good but the spring rolls where the high light...
I forget what all the mains where, one was stir fry beef, with a side of wasabi sauce. The best was so soft and tender! Then Mongolian lamb, pork in a sweet sauce, and there was some kind of chicken dish, there was also salt and pepper prawns ...one of the girls was starving and really wanted honey chicken so we ordered one extra honey chicken. the manger looked us to say are you kidding! Lol
The for dessert we had mango pancakes, and fresh fruit.
Great Chinese restaurant everything is done to perfection. The decor is amazing a real Chinese feel clean efficient fast service and very reasonable price. We had number 2 banquet and everyone was amazed at how good the food was and how quickly it was served it was simply delicious every dish was amazing from the dim sims to chilli prawns beef chicken everything and the mango pancakes to finish with dream material. The food just kept coming best banquet i have ever had .Highly recommend this establishment i will be back
Prawn dumplings
Prawn flat noodle
BBQ Duck
Chinese broccoli in oyster sauce
I’ve been here many times. It never lets me down.
The trolleys are very quick in rotation and the staff are happy to expedite any special requests.
Ambience is bustling and busy but fun.
Come here for authentic Cantonese food in Chinatown. The set menus are at good value, but I personally prefer to order some dishes that are hard to cook at home.
We enjoyed the steamed egg white topped with seafood and bean curd, lamb casserole which is an autumn dish, and deep fried oysters. I placed a packed of tissue next to it to show how big the oyster is! The oysters are crispy outside and succulent inside, so delicious!
mud crab was great! honey bbq pork was great!
Honey chicken was just ok, proportion of chicken to dough was not in the chickens favor. Too sweet aswell for my liking.
The roast pork was just ok. I would come back for the crab and would love to try the steam fish.
Food service was very quick!
A very reliable and honest restaurant! We came on the first night of CNY and they served wonderful dishes on such a busy night at reasonable price as usual! We had a truly enjoyable night and would definitely be back again ! Happy CNY!;)
Wonderful experience on Chinese New day dinner. Most delicious food and fantastic lion dancing performance. Reasonable pricing on such a busy day in Chinatown unlike other Chinese restaurants. Highly recommend !!

Exactly what you would expect from a Sydney Cantonese yum Cha venue. Queues to get a table, hustle and bustle, cranky staff, heaps of trolleys and great food selection. Well head back again very soon.
Really pleased with my Yum Cha experience here. I thoroughly enjoyed their good variety of dishes on offer especially their tendons and tripe, which I find is hard to get right in other places. Their stand out treat was their mango pancakes! I also liked how grand the place looked with the high ceilings and chandeliers, the seats were also quite comfortable too. There were plenty of staff members floating around but I felt their service could have been improved, they were slow and not accommodating.

My all time favourite Yum Cha restaurant.
Get in early to get a spot and feast away.
Marigold has been like an institution for our family for years. We always enjoy every part of the Yum Cha experience here. From the sometimes abrupt staff (makes for a fun experience!), who were actually AWESOME last visit, to the never ending stream of food trolleys rolling by.
The food here is awesome.
Keep your eyes out for the steam pork belly. It’s so good!
Also good are the BBQ meats, fries rice rolls, steamed dumplings (of all flavours) and those mango pancakes to finish.
This is good traditional yum cha in the heart of cbd and china town. I love that we can rock up and just get a table.
Dumplings - your usual prawn dumplings, prawn with chives etc I felt was very average. However they have quite a few other dishes that really ticks the boxes such as : mango crepes for dessert, a fried rice noodle which they do on the spot, their fried eggplant with prawn fillings are so yummy.
Advice: be adventurous and try some of the other different dishes besides the dumplings and you may be pleasantly surprised.
Bloody good yum cha! Pork pot stickers were delicious as was the steamed garlic chive dimplings. I could have buried my face in that comfort food.
This place is still kicking :D!!
This was the first ever Yum cha I had ever been too.. came to Australia when i was 4 & would of come here around the time i was 5 or 6 so a good 25 years ago :)!!
First time here & it was a shock to the European or ozzie food as i was used to :). Prices have definitely changed but the fast trolley food & relaxed yet super busy atmosphere has been the same all these years :D.
When it comes around to visiting here now it is a family tradition!! So there are a whole heap of Yum Cha places in the city to go to but i only talk so foundly about this place cause of the memories :), each to their own but this place has never once disappointed me.
Its always fun trying to make out what you & the trolley people saying but the best method is pointing & nodding yes or no :D.
Yum cha is the ultimate fast food cheat meal hands down, all your favorites quick and easy in a race to eat it lol!!
When your hungry & only the best will do :D
This has been the family yumcha for the past 10 years. Every year we went to Marigold, either to celebrate Chinese New Year or Easter. It's such a good place for family gathering. And the yumcha is good and service is really fast.
We've eaten heaps but these are the snippets of the last round for the table, haha! Can't go wrong with the yumcha staples - pork buns, har gao (prawn dumplings), siu mai (pork and prawn dumplings) and gailan (which is a delicious chinese spinach in soy sauce).
my favourite part is dessert. yum yum. anything mangoes go with me like mango pudding and pancake. the egg tarts are always scrumptious. flaky, buttery pastries. coconut milk jelly is tops!
i love marigold! can't wait for the next family gathering!
A family favourite we have been coming here for over two decades, our go to yum Cha in Sydney. Great atmosphere, always busy, great food open 365 days a year.
This place is open late and this and another establishment with Lobsters in their window are a great choice when you're out on the
p i s s and dont want a kebab. The set menus never disappoint are served quite quickly and A' La Carte even better. The service is direct and to the point, but it's the food and multi-level great dining hall that wins in creating the experience hands down.
Marigold is one is Sydney's old dim sum institution. Service is better here than most dim sum places. And you are bound to get your ideal dim sum with the ladies pushing their dim sum carts around. For special orders you may need to wave down a head waiter/waitress. For dim sum 3.5/5. Typical dim sum dining hustle hustle but still busy enough to get your order through.

Came to Marigold for Yum Cha after a visit to Sydney Chinatown. We ordered the standard Yum Cha dishes, including Siu Mai (烧卖), Har Gow (虾饺), Lo Mai Gai aka. Lotus Leaf Sticky Rice (糯米鸡), Har Cheung aka. Prawn Rice Roll (虾肠粉) and Ham Sui Gok (咸水角). As is necessary for Yum Cha (literally "drink tea" in Cantonese), we also had a pot of Jasmine Tea to go with it. I was very impressed with the quality of the dishes and the service, given how busy it was that day and how large the restaurant was. The dishes containing prawn in particular (namely the Har Gau and Har Cheung) were very good with their bouncy prawns and soft exteriors. The Ham Sui Gok was also nice and crunchy. In total, we ordered 6 dishes for 2 people, and paid $50 including the tea. Though this wasn't the cheapest Yum Cha I've been to, it was pretty close and was definitely worth it given the quality. In addition, we found the service very pleasant and efficient, despite other opinions that have been expressed. And you can't beat the old school Australian Chinese "trolley Yum Cha" experience smack bang in the middle of Chinatown.
If your up for a good yum cha feed this is the place.
We arrived about 1.30pm and had to wait 5 minutes to get a table, this is a true yum cha resturant with trolleys of all sorts of moving around with a great selection.
I recommend the mushroom and spinach and prawn and chive dumplings, and the chili seafood.
My second favourite Cantonese restaurant in Sydney, the yum cha is also really really good and I love the dumplings very much. The pork bun is of traditional flavour and very sweet.
The last 18 months have been really bad. Sickness, unemployment, more sickness, family members going off the deep end and huge unexpected vet bills. But a year ago we moved back to Sydney from Melbourne. The one thing that I was really excited about was awesome Asian food. I don't know why but I didn't have much luck in Melbourne with yum cha.
I had friends from Melbourne visiting and we decided to go to yum cha first we walk to the place in Marrickville but it was closed for renovations. Jumped on the bus and headed to the city. One of my friends had never eaten yum cha so it had to be Marigold. Yum cha at the Marigold is like a quintessential Sydney experience.
I have been to the Marigold 5 or 6 times since I have been back. To be honest it has been fluctuating in Quality. I am rating this based on the last two visits. They seen to be improving.
We had the usual Gweilo yum cha. Pork buns, steamed dumplings, gai larn, BBQ pork and roast duck.
The biggest downer I asked for Green Beans and Pork mince and the lady couldn't understand what I wanted. Its been over 24 hours and I am still sulking about this.
The seafood here is really yummy. The service is also quite good. I love the crabs here although they're more expensive than the ones you would find in other places
We had a great yum cha and also dinner.
Especially yum cha was good, nice busy atmosphere, variety of food was excellent and price is reasonably good, food quality was highly recommended.
Take the lift to level five of the Citymark building. The elevator doors open to reveal an expansive dining room, furnished with white linen clothed tables, plush chairs and hanging chandeliers. Trolleys laden with bamboo steamers trundle past.
Yum cha is such a great way to share a meal. Enjoy a delicious variety of dishes such as steamed BBQ pork buns, dim sims, prawn dumplings, beef rice noodles, salt and pepper calamari, and Chinese green vegetables with oyster sauce.
Looking for dim sum while traveling and this was one of the places most mentioned. The dim sum was fine, not the best I've had but hits the dim sum spot. Being one of the only people in the restaurant, it was easy to get anything off the carts. Staff are indifferent so don't expect amazing service.
This is one of the best Chinese restaurants in Sydney, when you want to host a large celebration. On this particular occasion, we ordered a banquet dinner and there were plenty of delicious dishes, such as, steamed scallops, jumbo oyster with vermicelli noodles, pecking ducks, combination soup, braised pork, steamed chicken, vegetarian mushroom, fried noodles, fried rice, fresh fruits and desserts. The waiters kindly apportioned the dishes for every guests so everyone got their fair share. We were very full from the banquet.
Very authentic dim sum place. Shrimp dumplings are good as usual. Fun Gor(with Vegetables and shrimps in it) is a surprise but a good one. Chicken feet is must-have thing for dim sum. Don't forget to order egg yolk bun, though kinda sweet, worth trying. 👍👍👍
This place is superb for their trolley fast service, tasty and delicious Yum Cha in Sydney, Haymarket. My hotel receptionist pointed out that this place is the best in town and I sure did went out of my way to find out for myself and I totally loved it. However though, it can be rather pricey compare to others around Sydney CBD.
We have been told to go for Yum Cha by many friends and family and on other trips had not managed to fit it in. On our trip last weekend to celebrate a cousin's birthday and a later flight on a Sunday, we though lets get in. So a group of 10, the trolleys kept coming and the dumplings and duck and pork and veggies (custards too) were consumed. A very nice tea was drunk. The room is huge and we were there at 10:30am, by 11:15 it was full and people were lining up
•Yumcha - I've been going to this one since 1997? Wow... Anyways thought it would be time to review
•Pork ribs were delicious and juicy
•Tripe not too chewy and well seasoned
•Custard (egg) bun wasn't for me, the dough was hard and chewy, ratio was too much dough to custard
•Dim sum was ordinary but they make their own meat which is good
•Prawn dumpling were average and on the smaller scale
•Gailan was delicious
•Overall, a nice place to go hang out with your family and friends.

This place comes with a long history of quality Chinese so was interesting to see how it would fare.
I enjoyed the food and found the staff very attentive to our every needs. Could've been more flexible in my opinion on the menu but won't hold that against them
I have a total soft spot for yumcha! It's one of those things that you have cravings for now and then like chocolate and ice cream!!! 😋😋😋
Finding a perfect yumcha place is a challenge in Sydney in my opinion - perfect food with excellent service is almost impossible combination for some reason 😪
My partner in crime (foodies buddy) took me to Marigold in Chinatown for yumcha! I was absolutely excited as I've been dreaming about yumcha. The succulent dim sims with chilli sauce - it's xmas in your mouth 😆😆😆
The food did not disappoint! Everything was pipping hot when it came off the trolley and the flavour - SPOT ON! I love the yellow skin steamed "shaomai" and the steamed pork rib dish - beautiful. Salivating thinking about it now. Ok it's not everyone's cup of tea but chicken feet!!! Awesome 😽
This would be my perfect yumcha joint if the service was good, unfortunately it did not escape the infamous yumcha curse - bad service 😭. To be fair the trolley people were so lovely, it's the black penguin jacketed waiters that ruins the whole experience. And penguins are meant to be cute 😕
The decor is outdated and dreary. This place has such potential but totally miss the spot on everything but sumptuous food!!!
Dilemma - want to go back for the yummy food 😁😁😁
If you are not put off by the scary trolley ladies and their in your face selling style, yum cha can be fun (but stressful at the same time as you need to be on constant look out for food). My favourite yum cha restaurant is definitely Marigold because they simply make the best steamed dumplings (prawns, spinach, scallops, dim sims, etc) as well as the best meat dishes (ribs, BBQ pork, sweet and sour pork, beef tripes). The only thing I won't eat is chicken feet. haha..
Loved the butter sauce black pepper crab with egg noodle. The sweet and sour pork was tasty and tender too. Awesome service too from one of the captains - Stephen! He shared crab cooking tips and was very attentive to our needs. Will be back for sure.
When I have brunch with a large group of friends, yum Cha is always the best option. Marigold in particular is in a convenient location just on George street in Chinatown and is average priced (going in big groups equals more people to split the bill with!). Staff are extremely friendly and readily available, although there may be a language barrier or miscommunication. But if you don't know Chinese, the trolley ladies are more than happy to show you one by one what's in their trolley. Everything we ordered is what you would expect from yum Cha. Tasty and always going back for more! I could sit there and eat there forever. One miss for me was the fried rice - a bit too oily and lacking flavour.
19-SEP-15 : Still one of the best places in Sydney for yum cha / dim sum. Always full so make sure you go early or be prepared for a long wait. Most dishes are good and my faves are the fung chow, cheong fun, har gow and egg tarts.

Have been here on numerous occasions for yum cha and all times have been good.
Mostly because i have been here on Sundays as Yum cha is a great hangover cure! We tend to arrive between 11.30 - 12pm and we go straight to level 5 and there usually isn't much of a wait. I think the most we waited was 5 mins!
Sometimes you get all the items you want as soon as you sit down, which is great as you can slowly get through them whilst watching what other options pass you by.
Favourites in clude the salt & pepper squid, steamed greens, all the dumplings and the combination pork footballs (that's not their actual name but they come in the shape of footballs and have a gooey coating) Can someone please tell me what their actual name is?
I find this place better as more of the steamed items are available.
For a quick lunch visit to see mum in between work, we decided to enjoy some yum cha at the Marigold restaurant in Chinatown! Apprehensive about ordering too much given that there was only two of us, we started with 3 dishes – prawn dumplings, rice noodles filled with prawn and fried noodles, which we had never tried before but were assured by the serving lady that they were delicious! Turns out, she was right – they were fried with shallots and slightly soft and chewy inside, and tasted delicious dipped in either the peanut butter sauce it came with, which made for a bizzare sweet and savory taste combination, and in the classic yum cha chilli sauce. The prawn dumplings were also perfectly steamed with nice pastry, and the noodles were the clear highlight for me – drenched in soy sauce and eaten with a bit of chilli, they were yum!
Marigold is open on public holidays which I love! I've been coming to Marigold for over 10 years!Marigold is a very popular yum cha restaurant with long lines on the weekend. Marigold is great because it's open everyday including public holidays and the food is very consistent. Also compared to other yum cha eateries, I think Marigold is reasonably priced. I came here on a public holiday and it was very busy!
Located in the heart of China Town. $68 for whole Peking duck with second course sang choy bow. This is a lot of food for two people and we struggled to get through it. Value for money, who doesn't love a good pecking duck pancake?!?! Abit of theatrics with the duck sliced in front of you. A lot of fun.
What an amazing Chinese restaurant! Fast and friendly service, delicious food, huge portions.
So sorry to hear its closing its doors forever in 2 weeks, glad we got our last meal in as booked solid now until closing day.
Special mention to Manager Kenny for his great attitude!
Took the chance to try them out before they close down (for good) on 5 December. Theyre only allotting 1hr per group, and I suggest coming in first thing when they open up to avoid the crowd.
I missed yum cha and this was actually a change after months in lockdown.
I really loved the siumai and the honey glazed pork was the winner for this meal! We also ordered the cantonese fried rice, which I dont recommend btw as it’s too dry and bland.
But other than that, everything hit the spot.
We absolutely love this iconic yum cha and will miss it!!! The delicate flavours are spot on with the necessary cacophony of a yum cha busyness! Glad we managed to savour these today
Update - sadly Marigold has announced its closing its doors are 39 years. Went for one last hoorah with a friend. Sad to see a place like this go, we’ll miss you! 😞
This is my fav yum cha in Sydney! The atmosphere, the food, it’s all good! There is a lot of variety on the menu from dumplings to noodles to duck and pork dishes, greens and desserts. The carts come by in a steady stream. Favs include the steam pork buns, prawn dumplings, bbq pork, salt and pepper squid, greens, scallop dumplings and the veg dumplings. They’re all yummy washed down with green tea. The only thing I would change is putting back Diet Coke and on the menu - they only serve Coke Zero now
Yum cha is on the fourth floor in the Marigold building, lifts are next to the escalator. Entrance to building on George Street and Thomas Street. Parking across the street at Haymarket under Paddy’s Market and also the Capitol Theatre 🥟

First of all I was very impressed with their customer service. starting from booking table to arriving at the restaurant and all the way through table service, every step the customer service was excellent. Staff were friendly, attentive and have good sense of humour. It is very COVID safe. They provided two pairs of chopsticks for each one of us so that we don't cross contaminate the food. The tables are spaced out very nicely and I felt comfortable dining there. The food is nice and reasonably priced. They also gave us complementary fruits and desserts. I wouldn't say it's the best food I have ever had but I would definitely go back for the overall experience.
I missed yum cha so much! Delicious food and great service. It wasn’t very busy when we went so there was heaps and space and very covid safe. There was a guy checking for our covid certificates before we were allowed upstairs. 👌
We arrived at around 11.30 on a Saturday but this place was packed!! The food trolleys were on stroll all the time and there were a variety of yum cha dishes to choose from. One thing I can say that this place has some dishes that I’ve never seen at any other yum cha places. The aunties were quite friendly but spoke broken English - still understandable though.
The only negative was we were told to finish in about 1 hour because they were too many customers waiting and the trolleys were coming at long intervals for our table so wasn’t sure what happened.
P.s: I went for the 2nd time after hearing the news that they will be gone for good… Some Sydneysiders will definitely miss this place! Goodbye 👋🏼
