When you’re up for some creative breakfast combinations, you can’t go past this place. Bold flavors, great produce and a warm smile every time
This place is always busy and with the 'bottomless' mimosas you can see why. Friendly service, quirky menu names and eye-catching food definitely helps. :)
Highlights: service with a smile. lowlights: drinks vs food times to the table. The drinks just took a little too long.
Why we visited this cafe so late! Return of MacDaddy and Pimp Mi Goreng are so! delicious! We want to go back again and again! Kimchi, bacon and cheese are the best.
I visited this cafe last week and is always amazed at the food menu! The food is always quite creative and out of the ordinary as I ordered the kimcheese toast and the return of the Mac daddy. This would be my second time visiting and I can certainly vouch that the Mac daddy is just as good as the first time I’ve tried it, that is always my go-to.
The Mac daddy is surprisingly not too heavy with the amount of Mac and cheese they put on the croissant, it is paired perfectly with the tomato relish and crispy onions which cut through. The Kim cheese toast is say was a 6/10, Im not too sure but I could not taste the kimchi at all or was it missing from my plate? The mushrooms however were delicious and had a lot of flavour but the kimchi would have elevated the dish a lot more so it wasn’t too flat!
For the service, we were greeted so politely and was able to order quite quickly but after our meal we did also want to order some juice and the waitress wasn’t as attentive and it was really hard to get her attention to make an order. However, this did not ruin the experience at all as if definitely still return!
No. 88 : 😁 Great
One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest : 😍 Amazing
Pimp Mi Goreng : 😍 Amazing
Coffee : 😁 Great
Well worth the wait, Cuckoo Callay was a pleasure to dine at. The menu was unique and creative and it was all delicious. The Pimp Mi Goreng was my favourite of the three with crunchy, juicy, noodle-coated chicken and their home made Kim Chi kicked it out of the ball park. Coffee was smooth and perfect to have on a cold winter morning. Will 100% come back.
Was here a few months ago when i was in Sydney. I absolutely love the names of these dishes: Return of the MacDaddy (my fave!!), I'm So Bondi It Hurts, Pimp Mi Goreng, Say Cheese Kimchi and One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest. The drinks: My Watermelon Don't Lie and On Wednesday We Wear Pink. Definitely a good brunch place in Syd!

Food and coffee here were perfect 👌😍 we sat at a bar upstairs. The morning sun hit the food beautifully and made for nice pictures 📸
🥞🍓Flat as a pancake ($21) With lemon and white chocolate hotcake, spiced sour cherry jam, honey and vanilla yoghurt, macadamia crumble and fresh berries
I was worried it wasnt going to be enough, but it was actually a satisfying feed. Then pancake was very tasty and quite dense. The toppings were very light and was a very nice touch. (Pretty to look at too 🤩)
🥪🥒Tribute To The Greatest Reuben ($22)
With house-made wagyu corned beef, gruyère cheese, sauerkraut, russian dressing, pickles and watercress on sourdough served with salt and vinegar house crisps
Boyfriend review: Yum! It had a tasty chilli sauce. Meat tasted so good.
🥃Bubble, Bubble Cup ($7)
With cold brew, hazelnut soaked tapioca pearls and bonsoy.
I actually had already ordered a latte, but when I saw this on the menu I knew I had to try it (nothing wrong with having two coffees). This did not disappoint I loved the taste of the mini hazelnut soaked tapioca pearls in the coffee. I recommend trying it if you want something different.

Cute little cafe in Surrey Hills with kots of natural light and outdoor seating.
I got the croissant filled with mac and cheese and egg. Super delicious but got sickening quite quickly, but my husband demolished his and finished mine off!
Nice Sunday coffee. Friendly, fast service. Love their loyalty cards for puppies -- great initiative. Would've stayed for breaky but no seats left as this place seems pretty popular with the locals. Next time.
Lets see if Sydney can beat Melbourne in terms of Brunch!
Visited a friend and happy to finally get to try this place.
Mac n cheese croissant is a must try. Just make sure you get this to share as the mac n cheese itself if very creamy.
Pimp mi goreng. I am sure most people will know what mi goreng is as they are on most of supermarkets around Australia.
The world most famous instant noodle MI GORENG - since I’m Indonesian, I will share a bit of mi goreng background. This is one thing that my country is famous for. Is mi goreng healthy? Of course NOT! That is why they are very yummy. This is what most indonesian would bring to camp, sleepover, etc. Hence when I see the word on the menu, of course I have to try it. This dish is very nostalgic and a childhood dream come true!!
Juicy chicken thigh, with mi goreng crunch, mapple bacon and aoli. Enough said I guess.
For dessert I recommend French toast with fired Nutella bomb to share. Topped with Fairy floss and they also come with Ice cream. Who doesn’t like nutella and ice cream rite?
Drinks also very interesting. We tried tumeric coffee ~ not our favourite but I am very impressed with ideas.
Definately go check this place out.

This is a pretty cool cafe! I was intrigued looking at the menu and the layout of the cafe is pretty neat! It was quite busy when I went in, the service was good and the store was clean. Pretty cool place overall
Great service, extremely dog friendly, great food. We tried this place after trying the Newtown one and it didn’t disappoint. We took our puppy here and the staff were lovely, the food was great. Highly recommended!
i saw a lot of people recommending this place and naturally had high expectations, and this place definitely did not disappoint me! I came with a hungry empty stomach in the morning as well. I loved the scrambled eggs with kimchi and peppers, combined with the black sourdough and cheese it was definitely a very tasty and nutritious breakfast. the coffee is good too.👌🙆🏻♀️ will definitely be back to try more! (the croissant on the table next to mine looks so good)
I love being in Sydney to explore the amazing cafe culture that makes Sydney food so good. And Cuckoo Callay is right on par.
From the moment we arrived till paying the bill, I loved everything about this place. Service was friendly and effortless and the staff were all smiling.
It was peak lunchtime but we squeezed in to the end of a communal table. Our lovely waitress asked us straight up if we wanted to order a drink, which we did. Ordering our standard Flat White and a Cappuccino, they arrived surprisingly quickly considering every table was full. The coffee was strong and smooth. The best coffee I've had in Sydney so far. 4.5/5.
With a new Autumn Menu, my favourite daughter ordered the hot cakes and I couldnt go past the Rueben Sandwich.
I must admit we did wait a while for our meals but sitting in the outdoor section in the Autumn sunshine we were in no rush.
I must say the meal presentation is impeccable and every dish that passed us we ooohed and aaahhhhed over. And our meals didn't dissapoint! I was allowed a spoonful of the hotcakes and they tasted amazing. The hotcake had a hint of lemon snd the crunch of the nuts and the icecream and coulis all complimented each other. My rueben was so yummy with a spicy hint of sriracha mayo. The corned beef was melt in the mouth.
I'm looking forward to exploring more places in Sydney and I will definitely be back here.
Came with my friends, good vibes, good service, and good food. Love the pimp mi goreng !! Reminds me of indomie goreng . For the coffee, ordrd cold drip and it was good alsoo
Came here with friends for cup of tea/lattes. Ordered chai latte, matcha latte, and peppermint tea. Ambience is great. Busy place, Friendly staff.

The Spot: amongst strong competition in the area, they stand out with their funky aesthetic. Very positive and unpretentious. The only thing to knock of the 0.5 is purely personal preference and I almost hate myself for being this way, but the boppy music kind of killed my vibe. Granted, I was there by myself on a rainy day so maybe I lost this round.
The Service: so cheery, so efficient. Too efficient? I witnessed a couple being approached 3 times by different staff for their order within 5 minutes of sitting down. For a maniac who pre-reads menus, this suits me fine, but for such a wonderfully creative menu I think some more time to ponder is warranted. Also automatic A+ for having a genuine opinion about the menu and giving recommendations without using the phrase, “this is our most pOpuLaR DisH”.
The Food: so I did the thing where I asked the waitress to choose between two (or five) things for me and she chose the Cuckoo’s Nest. I have integrity so I followed through, and then followed that with immediate regret, thinking, “broccoli and kale when there’s halloumi, crab cakes and croissants elsewhere on the menu?!” But alas my jaw dropped when it came out looking and tasting the way it did. I could wax lyrical about the off-beat presentation (again, weirdly unpretentious), the perfect balance of spice, zest, cream and tekschaaa. I did not expect this from what read on the menu like a fancy bowl of grass and the serving size was 10/10 for Sydney CBD standards.
Overall, this was a huge surprise for a brunch sceptic. I feel a bit hasty to rate it, having only had one thing but damn I had a good time.
We from Mel, and heading to the Surry hills looking for a nice brunch cafe and here, was so great meals as well as super kind staff. This pic is what i had and so delicious.
I had wanted to try this spot for the longest time and it did not disappoint. Friendly and helpful staff who actually know the menu. I am going back just to get the ‘Reuben Sandwich’ again. The best I have ever eaten. #breakfastinsydney #brunchgoals
We had an early breakfast on the way to the airport to drop sis off. They open at 7am and a few tables were already taken. There are some amazing dishes at Cuckoo Callay..
-Dessert for breakfast ~ “I Speak Fluent French Toast”, French toast waffles, vanilla gelato, deep fried Nutella (yep that’s a thing!), raspberry whipped ricotta, caramelized white chocolate, fresh berries and pistachio fairy floss
-Yummy Sideways Shuffle - blue swimmer crab cake with corn & avo salsa, watermelon, cucumber and lemon jelly with a 63deg poached egg
Pastries were on the average side. Drinks (coffee and Chai latte) were great. Friendly service!!
Nice place, friendly staffs, amazing food and a really chill day. 💗
Enjoy the weekend with my friend, everything great, thanks for the delicious brunch.
Stopped over for a quick snack here last Saturday. Was seated outside.
Tried the All that Fritters is Gold.. essentially Veg Pakoras. Tasty and well plated. Also tried their Salted Caramel and Toffee milkshake.. was really looking forward to it.. turned out alright... nothing Awesome.. but, not bad either.
Overall, good ambience & great location, quick service and decent food.
A cafe which I love for their inventive, unique dishes and fun spirit! Displaying fantastic technique, a focus on vibrant, eclectic flavour and a number of international ingredients scattered across the menu, Cuckoo Callay manages to create a quirky, exciting menu unique to the diversity that defines Sydney. Located in the heart of Surry Hills, its the perfect spot to partake in some dogspotting, while sipping on mimosas and facing the almost impossible decision of choosing what to eat.

Cute cafe with two levels in Surry Hills. I ordered the granola with panacotta and poached pear and it was delicious! Coffee was pretty good too.

One of the BEST places I’ve been to in some time. I went twice within a 3 day period because of how great my first experience was.
Not only was the menu just as good as I’d read about, but the friendly staff really won me over. I found them all to be absolutely lovely.
The food was brilliant. On the second visit my husband indulged in the croissant from the bacon menu (which is something that really needs to be worked through by true bacon lovers) and loved it.
Brunch options are quite different in this place and we were keen to try everything!
After a 20 minute wait, we got in. They are not too quick in taking orders as the place is busy, but they wait for food wasnt too long either.
The bacon fest was awesome! They even have a bacon milkshake! 😱😱
Food was great and satisfying! Especially the burger, very structural and filling.
However, food is a bit expensive.
Would love to come and explore again.
Visited here a couple of times now, and ended up ordering the same dish on both occasions!
If you make your way here on the weekend, probably expect a short wait as quite a few people will most likely have the same idea as you! Not really an issue though, and once you’re seated they are pretty prompt to take your order!
All the dishes have quite interesting name, and they all sound absolutely delicious! I personally went for the Bacon MacDaddy which, as you can see, is a fully loaded filled croissant! Mac n cheese, bacon, tomato relish, and a 63° poached egg all crammed inside this giant toasted croissant!
Quite reasonably priced for its location, and a definite must visit if you’re ever in Sydney!
Staff are extremely but wait time on food is quite long. Don’t recommend if you are going for a hearty meal but good if you are thinking of chilling. The dishes are very creative but not a wow factor for me. Interior is amazing, excellent for Instagram photos.
Pros
Portion size
Yuzu honey drink
Opens a little later than other cafes
Easy parking
Pretty decor
Cons
Small tables
I really enjoyed the Newtown one so decided to give Surry hills a try. Menu had a pretty good variety, I ordered the Mac daddy. The serving was huge!! The dish is on the heavy side.
The smoked salmon side was really good, you can tell it was not from a package but it was really creamy and fresh.
I would come back again.
Super cute vibe and decor, perfect weekend brunch spot! Loved their cuckoo’s nest (perfect balance of flavor and texture with a lot of hearty greens to make it feel even healthier), avotoast was slightly on the more pepper tasting side so if you dab your food in Black pepper the you’ll love it. Beetroot latte was very meh tasting but makes a good photo! Upstairs of the restaurant is super cute and pretty and they have one of my fav restaurant mirrors there too
Cuckoo Callay is a wonderful and inviting brunchable cafe in Surry Hills, Sydney. The staff are so friendly and happy, and service is quick! Lots of seating downstairs, outside and upstairs. The Matcha & Chai Lattes are lovely, not the best we have had but still awesome. Lots of interesting and delicious choices on the menu! The food was fresh and tasty!
TIP: Do order the Poached Pear with Panna Cotta - fresh and delicious. Don’t forget to order a Matcha or Chai!
Cuckoo Calley was suggested as the brunch catch up location for my long weekend in Sydney last week. I absolutely loved the atmosphere and the place was simply buzzing ahead of Mardi Gras the next day. I didn’t much care for the 40 minute wait but thems the breaks for a dining hotspot.
More then a bit disturbed at their lack of peppermint tea (not trending enough?) but the cold drip was presented very well.
I also loved the interior with the cute flamingos everywhere and neon sign.
Food wise gorgeous plating and delicious dishes. My avo dish was yummy and a generous serve befitting the price. Overall a good central location and right next to the surry hills market of a Saturday too
Lovely staff and service. Food and coffee were really nice and tasty. Will definitely recommend to others. It is just a bit too far to me to get to, and not close to the train station so maybe bus or drive will be the better choices.
Gorgeous interiors- delicious food and coffee .... would happily come back again. Highly recommend the 12 hour cooked beef and crab fritters!!
Right near the library, centrally located in Surry Hills, it’s great space with a nice outlook. I love the stylish interior with pink seats and neon lights and a cool cocktail bar. I met some friends here for brunch. I enjoyed the one flew over the cuckoos nest of sautéed broccoli, kale, peas, wild grains, Chermoula and a 63 degree poached eggs sitting in a crispy nest. It was mighty delicious and I’d absolutely go back for this. My friend enjoyed the crab cakes and a beetroot latte. They also do cocktails as perfect brunch accompaniment. Loved this place.
If you love great space, great vibes, a terrifically creative menu and tasty coffee.
Recommendation: The Shuffle Slider! Who knew crab and watermelon could be so good together :P
Staff were friendly and great service. Decor and design were fitting of the menu. I had the croissant bacon with mac and cheese and the you're just some melon that I used to know pressed fruit juice - refreshing. It's a place you'd go back to more than once to try out most of the menu.
One of the best brekky places Sydney has to offer. Newly opened at Surry Hills's breakfast lunch dinner dining precinct - it's packed with patrons - always!
So what's great about it? Food is awesome, ambience is out of this world. You can sit upstairs by the window on a sunny day whilst you savor the delicacies!
My favorite - Salted Caramel Milkshake!
Just to add - dog owners get special treatment!
Great cafes in Australia are usually started and owned by hardworking and innovative chefs. Hence, I am apprehensive about a renowned cafe or restaurant setting up their 2nd outlet/branch because the quality of food and service deteriorates drastically as the licensee or business partner does not have the foresight or firsthand experience on what makes the establishment ticks. See Ippudo, Devon, Burnt Orange.
Cuckoo Callay, a well-known corner cafe next to Newtown Station, is extremely popular for their variety of inventive and delicious brunches. Their second outlet was housed in a two-storey shophouse on Crown Street and adjacent to the equally impressive Rustic Pearl but extremely awful Yulli’s. The warm and sunny morning has attracted families to busk in the spring sunshine and I can people-watch from the perch at the corner of the cafe.
The second storey was open-air with an unmistakable signage in pink, green and white whereas the ground floor itches into the open lawn where little children were playing Jenga and pinballs.
I ordered the Chocolate Salty Balls, a crunchy nut crusted French toast, served with banana jam, chocolate meringue, banana ice cream and chocolate crumbs. The lightly burnt French Toast combines flawlessly with the sweet fragrant banana jam and the little salty balls to give you the perfect twist to the conventional toast. A second bite was accompanied with the light, icy cold banana ice cream and flaky chocolate soil.
This French Toast is arguably the best in Australia with complementary sides that enhances its flavour, texture and smell. It is extremely instagram-worthy and you can play with the meringue too.
The detoxifying Lime Like You Mean It, which comprises banana, lime, spinach and avocado was a great sidekick to the intensely flavourful toast.
Cuckoo has overtaken Three Williams as my favourite cafe in Sydney. I hope my second visit does not disappoint.
Cuckoo Callay settles nicely into the spot left behind by the Ampersand Cafe. It’s a perfect location, I think. Right next to the lovely open space next to the Surry Hills Library, usually catching the sun and the buzz of everyone walking past, hanging out, doing their groceries and going for coffee in Surry Hills.
The food here was wonderful. I got the Gorgeous George (Persian style avocado on toast) and my partner got One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest (greens, quinoa and eggs). I can not recommend the one flew over the cuckoos nest enough, it was fresh and bright and light, but with the quinoa and poached egg was substantial enough. My avocado toast was also lovely with feta and a poached egg.
The coffee is from coffee alchemy and very very good. It is just very good coffee.
Food came out quickly enough, and I had no issues with the service.
Cost us $50.50 for a coffee each and a main each, but both the food and coffee were good.
Visited on a Monday off and had the best experience here. Not only were the coffees and sweets delicious, the owners and the staff were also extremely attentive and welcoming. Would definitely take up their offers and suggestions in terms of what to order as the cupcakes (espresso & pecan) and lemon meringue tart were so yummy. They were lovely enough to let us try their specialty coffee (which had a unique spice mix) which was a great start to our morning. Would definitely come again. 😊
The customer service was really on point and amazing! The staff were really attentive with suggesting to us vegan options after seating us down and poured us water and refills. QR code at table to pay upon ordering, so there was no need to split bills. Really lovely food! Definitely should try the ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest’ dish! The ‘No. 88 Okonomiyaki’ was a little bit too sweet for our liking. Other than that, would definitely return to try the other variety of dishes the cafe has to offer!
Sunday breakfast. Crowded yet staff were attending to us to the best they could.
Order DIY breakfast with sourdough toasts with scrambled eggs and bacon. Loved all of them, eggs was well done with a good swirl and texture. Not too watery and the right moisture made it a good blend on the buttered toast. Bacon strips had a good crisp yet soft to bite it off with fat.
Coffee was great! Good touch of strength for me.
Wonderful service. Ordering via the table qr was simple and had good pictures of menu items.
Eggs on toast were perfect. And the bacon was an essential add on.
Pour over coffee was served in a glass. Just be sure to let it cool a minute before drinking 👍
Fantastic local gem. Great creative food with a twist, beautiful smooth coffee and friendly service. We came on a Saturday morning and it was BUSY, so consider booking in advance or trying to come before 9am/after 11am.
Definitely on my list to come back.
Nice cafe with good coffee and healthy choices for breakfast. But also naughty things like their French toast. Seating outside is a little crammed, but offers a nice view on people (and lots of dogs) passing by.
Late post - Went to Cuckoo Callay on Crown for Sunday brunch late last year. Food was good - I really enjoyed my order of no 88 Okonomiyaki and sides of Korean fried chicken bites, but service was mediocre. We had to wait for a table but wasn't a long wait. Overall good experience.
