The soba here is handmade inhouse everyday, make sure you try them!
I loved my cold oroshi soba, noodle is very aldente, fragrant with buckwheat and the grated daikon is fresh.
The chicken mushroom soup soba is warming and perfect for winter. The seafood okonomiyaki is filling, generous with toppings and delicious.
Everything is amazing, we will be back!
Loved the experience! Luckily, we came as a party of two and managed to get a spot at the bar since we didn’t have a booking. It was awesome watching them make the food right in front of you. Prices are quite steep though.
There are many reasons to love this place - the gyoza is exceptional, the scallops are delightful, the soba noodles are delicious..... but the best thing they do here is the miso. Made from scratch, delicately smokey and absolutely delightful - I cannot have miso from any other place now, they have spoiled me!
Super authentic restaurant that offers freshly made soba and warm service. The soba is very fragrant and well balanced with a soup that has strong bonito flavours, and the duck was cooked perfectly. We also ordered sushi, egg rolls, tempura, walnut soba that had a sweet and rich soup, as well as the special okonomiyaki. Egg rolls were excellent, okonomiyaki had quite a lot of leek and was a bit salty, so I’d recommend adding mochi or noodles. Sushi and tempura were fresh but slightly overpriced for just a small amount, but still worth trying.
The biggest letdown was that they don’t offer a dessert menu- even something simple like matcha ice cream or fruit would’ve made a great difference to the dining experience, please consider.
What a very authentic japanese restaurant in North Sydney! The place, the ambience, the food, everything was very japanese! And FYI they make the soba from scratch!!! Not many japan restaurant make that from scratch, because it takes a very long time & very hard to do it. That’s why it makes this restaurant special. We ordered the famous okonomiyaki, prawn & pork gyoza, fried soba, cold soba with walnut soup, and cold soba with tempura. They were all tasted fantastic! The price were also reasonable. Definitely will come back.
Overall a satisfying experience! The tempura soba was authentic, however we would have loved the portion size of its tempura to be bigger for its price.
What I discovered about this place is ... there is a Japanese restaurant on almost every street corner. If there is that much competition, I’d gladly assume that the food standard would have to be good. Well... if you’re after top notch Japanese eatery, this suburb will do you justice. This place hand makes their own soba noodles and that makes all of the difference.
The portions are typically Japanese... small. Don’t be deceived by the portion size, it fills you up just nicely.
The food preparation is so thoughtful, everything cooked to perfection.
What we ordered: the Okonomiyaki deluxe with the king prawns on top. Hot soba with tempura and a deluxe lunch special.
At the time, we wished we had a stretchy stomach. Ordered more than we could eat! Got a tad greedy.
This place isn’t cheap or overly expensive but priced according to effort and what they ask for is well worth it. The Okonomiyaki was around $22 or so and their soba noodles as well.
At the end of the day at this restaurant, you sincerely get what you pay for.
Our new favourite Japanese place.
We only visit for lunch, the lunch box selections are great value. All freshly cooked, service is good too.
The atmosphere is beautiful, I am not sure for dinner as this place seems quite popular.
Not like other Japanese, no loud greeting, rough/casual communication here.
I felt like eating in Japan, quiet, relax place and decent flavour (not westernised at all).
Only one criticism for my meal is, tempura on tendon was a bit too soggy. I know sauce was on top so it won’t stay crispy. But whole prawn tempura was soaked, no crispness left from the first bite straight after serving.
We will be back here soon.
I searched on the internet for the best okinomiyaki in Sydney and came upon Jugemu. Whilst it wasnt the same as what we had in Osaka, it was very nice and filling. Each pancake was quite thick and filled with fresh seafood and cabbage, topped with delicious sauce. It did take more than half an hour to come out though so be prepared to wait esp at peak time.
I had a great experience here. I had ordered two separate soba dishes to share with the girlfriend. I was pleased to find that the serving for each of the dishes we ordered was nicely split in two. The decor and customer service of the place was also fantastic. Our dessert was also split into separate servings. I really appreciated the thoughtfulness of the service. Would recommend.
Hands down, most authentic Japanese food you will find in Sydney, and we are not just talking about their in-house noodles which are of course best-in-class. Ricky and the team have built a serious reputation for sticking to authentic Japanese flavours and recipes, backed up with FRESH ingredients, and resisting the temptation to tailor the menu to better appeal to mainstream Aussie tastes. That is, mayonnaise and MSG is NOT smothered over everything in sight! Value for money? Barely, but your palate and your stomach will thank you for it. Not sure what I am going to do when they close down at the end of the year to relocate...
I had a good experience here yesterday! The service was really good and the staff were really friendly. My favourite dish was the Soba noodles, which had a really great texture and the cold soup was so flavoursome. The waitress came up to us after we ate and topped up our soup to make it into miso soup, which was awesome. The Okonomiyaki was also yummy and it was fun watching the chefs make it in the open kitchen. The only downside was that the food took a bit long to come out but other than that, it was a wonderful evening.
Great place for soba!!!!
So many flavours to choose from - I really love the chicken and mushroom hot soba!!
The tempura batter is light and cooked very well too.
Jugemu & Shimbashi is my family's favourite traditional Japanese restaurant in Sydney. We've been coming here since it first opened and Ricky and his team have done a fantastic job maintaining a consistently superb dining experience.
There are so many highlights on the menu - from the sushi and sashimi (which is always fresh and delicious) to the okonomiyaki (Japanese savoury pancake) and homemade soba noodles - that it's always hard to decide what to order. There's also a regularly updated specials menu which is great for regulars because it means that there's always something new to try.
You won't find an authentic Japanese dining experience like this anywhere else in Sydney.
One of my all time favourites... beautifully done Japanese on the north shore, they make their own noodles and the traditional fare is awesome.. highly recommend the gyoza and excellent sashimi...
Excellent cold soba noodles. The dipping sauce was also very tasty. The waitress gave me dashi soup in a small teapot to pour into the dipping sauce afterwards to have as a broth which was lovely. Try to book the traditional Japanese table seating if you can. The service was lovely and parking not too difficult in the nearby residential streets. Overall a lovely evening.
Been here three times, I like the soba special with three different flavours of soba noodles, the flavours changes all the time.
The desert is also the highlight.
Savoury pancake- average taste
Stay way from teppanyaki dishes- below average taste
Will I go back: yes, make sure you make bookings in advance
Overally a very tasty but a little pricy Japanese Restaraunt. The Ox toungue skewer is really tender and flavousome, the urchin sushi and salmon sushi are good but nothing surprising. The miso cod is amazing, wish i can have them for every meal in my life. My friend seems really like her soba noodle, I tried a bit feel it is too hard. the pancake is alright, very oily unhealthy as usual.
Best okonomiyaki and soba I've had outside of Japan. The noodles are perfect texture, not too soft. I've gotten the seafood and wagyu beef okonomiyaki and they are very generous with the fillings and have just the right amount of sauce. The presentation of the food is very nice as well.
Miso Cod in Neutral Bay. Cute little Japanese restaurant on Military Rd in Neutral Bay. I was working in Neutral Bay and saw they did Miso Cod so had to get it even if it was takeaway. Such a foodie thing to do! Did not disappoint, this is my favourite all-time dish.
Service is very friendly and helpful. The interior smells like the teppanyaki grill and this transfers to your clothing.
The food is tasty, delicate and authentic Japanese. We had the salmon roll with chilli Mayo which was exquisite. The teriyaki chicken was well cooked and the sauce wasn't overpowering.
We ordered the duck and mushroom udon but our order must have gotten mixed up because we received soba. Nevertheless it was delicious and the soba was fresh, clearly handmade and soft. The duck was also well cooked. They were nice enough to divide the portion into 2 bowls so that we could share.
Food didn't take too long considering how full the place was. Overall I'd definitely come back to try the udon and other sushi rolls and highly recommend.
Big call alert! The best noodles I have ever eaten. You can taste they have been made that day and they are cooked to perfection. I will come back here time and time again.
Pricey but authentic Japanese cuisine.
The chicken skewer balls are the most authentic in Australia. The flavour is 100% nostalgic.
I always find a level of consistent quality and service here without any qualms and feel that everyone needs to splurge here once in a while.
The best is to get the whole Japanese experience and that would be in the Japanese dining area. The ambience is great. If you look at the structure built around it you will noticw that it uses a traditional Japanese woodwork frame process. The laterns are covered in basic paper craft.
Such a humble serving size and place to settle the week.
Two other things to have here, Soba housemade and ground and the okonomayaki.

Authentic Japanese place in Neutral Bay.
They are focusing on Okonomiyaki and Soba noodles. Both are made in their restaurant. Been there with my parents,
Customer service was excellent. They prepare something before we asked them.
This place is Always booked out very quick. Recommend booking before you visit the place. Scallop okonomiyaki was good. Cold Soba was good. Goma ae was good. Gotta try :)
What a great find! A truly authentic Japanese experience at a fair price for high quality food. We went for the handmade soba noodles; one in a light broth with chicken and mushrooms and another bathed in curry which was delicious and light. To start, the tamari Edamame delighted the palate, as we were waiting for our white sesame tofu starter. Sophisticated yet simple flavours impressed with an extraordinary attention to detail. To finish, we ate black sesame and green tea ice cream, of which the former was the winner. One of the highlights was the Green tea Umeshi. Simply beautiful and smooth, adding an interesting twist. Seated at the Teppanyaki table, we witnessed the Okonomiyaki cooked to perfection, which we have yet to try and will go for next time. Definitely a place to return to. A very well kept secret indeed!
Be prepared to be swept away to Japan as soon as you step foot inside the restaurant. Authentic food, friendly service and inviting decor that makes you feel like you are at a restaurant in Japan. Highly recommend the soba, gyoza and the okonomiyaki. Really looking forward to coming back soon!

I reckon this is definitely one of the best Japanese place around. Service is excellent and decor is nice & comforting. These Japanese chefs really know their skills as is demonstrated with the finest excellence with each dish. Really love this place and will not hesitate to return when I'm around! Will try more again!
Coming back from Japan at the end of July this year, naturally, the first thing I wanted to do when I got back was eat more Japanese food. Jugemu Shimbashi is a restaurant (two restaurants, specifically) that adhere to the tradition of restaurants specialising in one dish. Jugemu specialises in teppanyaki food, while Shimbashi specialises in soba noodles (Shimbashi’s soba noodles are hand made every day). Both of the restaurants specialise in these two things, but you can sit on any side, and order from the same menu. The restaurants are also connected, so sometimes it’s hard to distinguish which is which.
Time for some soba noodles and okonomiyaki at Jugemu & Shimbashi. Hand made soba noodles for my belly ... -- The Food -- Genki Dama ($20) Wagyu Slices and garlic topped with fried garlic and spring onion Mmmm I love okonomiyakis in general. The base, sauce and garlic chips are all tasty. The only criticism would be the wagyu slices, which was slightly tough. Hard to tear apart. I've had the pork okonomiyaki in the past and I found that easier to eat and tasty. Chicken Oyako Don with miso soup I also love oyako don. Tasty chicken pieces drizzled with egg and sweet caramelized onions, served on top of rice. The egg continues to cook in the bowl of rice. The whole dish is drizzled with sweet soy sauce. The chicken in silky smooth because of the egg mixture. So tasty and heart warming ! Tempura Soba ($20) Hand made soba with sauce on the side. The soba is dipped into the sauce for flavour. The tempura is crispy and fresh. At the end of the meal, a pot of soba water is added to the sauc
Ju Ge Mu & Shimbashi is an interesting hyphenated name for a restaurant, so I did a quick search on the net. Apparently in Japan, restaurateurs concentrate on specialising, rather than offering a meal-for-all-seasons. Hence, Ju Ge Mu & Shimbashi wanting to give the best of both worlds in soba and teppanyaki successfully combined two specialty restaurants under one roof in a comfortable Japanese ambience.
This is a combined restaurant; half of it specialises in teppanyaki and the other half in soba noodles. You can order from both menus regardless of which side you sit on.
The serving sizes are small but very tasty :) Service was warm and prompt.

After seeing a keen photographer friend's photos of this restaurant on Facebook, I was absolutely fascinated. There were several showing a man with a heavy-looking cleaver cutting up fresh soba in the storefront window. Fresh handmade soba - in Sydney ! I

Handmade noodles. There is something about them - perhaps the extra bite and chewyness, the fact that it's fresh, or just that it's been made with love - that makes them special. Here at Jugemu & Shimbashi, the soba noodles are all three of these things, with the noodles being freshly made by hand (and with love!) before each service and perfectly chewy. The restaurant consists of two sides: Jugemu, which specialises in okonomiyaki and teppanyaki, on one side and Shimbashi, a buckwheat noodle house, on the other. Tonight we are seated on the Shimbashi side in a sunken wooden table where we must remove our shoes first. We're given the menu which includes items from both sides of the restaurant, as well as an A4 sheet detailing their specials for today. (left) Soba dips - $6; (right) Grilled beef tongue (2pcs) - $8 To start we order the soba dips to nibble on. The crunchy soba crisps are the perfect vehicle for the avocado and minced salmon sashimi dip and the dish is light enough to jus
Never Disappointed!. My partner and I visit Ju Ge Mu & Shimbashi quite regularly, ever since a mutual friend took us along for dinner there, many years ago. Our friend loves anything Japanese and this restaurant came highly recommended from him.
Now, first of all, for anyone that says the food here is average is not seeing straight. Yes, it might be a bit pricey, but it is totally worth it. Having visited Japan, this restaurant is definitely where I go to get food which is close to what I had when I was over in Japan have the real deal.
First up, if you don't know it, you should try the okonomiyaki, which is essentially a pancake filled with goodies (you can try it with pork belly, seafood, wagyu beef, etc.) topped with a wonderful sauce. It does take a while to make, but the end result is absolutely sublime! It's not as big as the hiroshimayaki (the version I had in Hiroshima, which usually has noodles in it). If you are ordering this amongst other dishes, I recommend to just order one and share it, as it can be quite filling.
Then, if you like your soba, then DEFINITELY order some from here. They make their soba noodles fresh everyday, and whether you have them served hot or cold, it is delicious! The noodles have a wonderful texture and even in the menu, there is a diagram explaining how to eat them - lots of slurping noises are a must! :D
Also, if you decide to order your soba noodles cold, once you've finished your noodles, the waitstaff give you a little pot of hot water. This ain't any pot of hot water, but the hot water used to cook your soba noodles. Just pour it into the little bowl of leftover dipping sauce, stir it a bit and slurp it up like soup = DIVINE!
Additionally, I have tried pretty much all the sushi rolls which are all exceptional, however, I do have a soft spot for the wagyu one! Also, things like the soba chips and the edamame are wonderful to start off with, whilst you wait for your yummy Japanese food!
I don't know about these negative/average reviews, but for me, Ju Ge Mu & Shimbashi have ALWAYS delivered. Also the waitstaff are always very polite and if you have questions about the menu, they are happy to answer them for you.
There is a high level of expectation and craftsmanship here with the food and if you don't get that, then I highly recommend that when you book to eat here, request to be seated at the teppanyaki side, so you can see the chefs close up, who are masters at what they do!!
My favourite Japanese restaurant in Sydney! The food is always great and the staff incredibly friendly. I come here all the time and would highly recommend it.
Fantastic service, attention to detail is impeccable, great workers, great food, great chefs, a taste of real Japan in Sydney!!! Fine dining Japanese style!!!
Satisfied each time I ate here, nothing to complain even with my picky tongue. Their consistency throughout the years is commendable. Lovely crockery too, appreciated.
Good food, but a little pricey for its small serving. But then again, good food don't come cheap..
One of favouite Jap restaurants. Fantastic soba/udon and beef tongue. Vegetable and mushroom extremely fresh. Nice beer, too.
I Will Give It Another Go.... The moment we walked into the restaurant, I had a feeling the service of the restaurant was going to be a little off.
As soon as we entered, we were ordered to stand by the door. While the manager [I am assuming] continued to take another table's order. A waitress looking at us, rushed over to help us to our table, only to be told by the manager to return to her station.
Once, the manager had taken the order of that mentioned table he then took us to ours. Leaving us with the menu for around fifteen minutes.
Finally, making his way over to us, while taking our order he wasn't paying attention and forgot our drink order and our entree was sent out last.
Don't get me wrong, the restaurant was great in terms of food and ambience but the service, some attentiveness and friendliness would have made the experience wonderful.
That's the thing I don't get about customer service in some restaurants. I work hard and use my money and pay a premium for good food and good service, otherwise I would just drive through a KFC.
This place is great, we've been coming for years and Ricky always remembers us and what we like on the menu, great service friendly atmosphere and awesome food. This is the only Japanese place we go to in Sydney!
Cant get enough of their hand made soba, whether its the one with warm duck broth or grated radish. The prawn tempuras are superbly done, with a very light batter without being oily. The garlic rice makes a great starter
My new favourite Japanese place. Great Japanese beer to begin with, followed by spider roll, mushroom dish, soba noodles, tempura prawn roll and fantastic beef pancake. Desert was scrumptous, tempura icecream with berries. A great night all round.
Top notch.. With handmade soba on one side (Shimbashi) and okinomiyaki on the other (Jumegu), this twin restaurant serves some of the best Japanese food in Sydney. My favourite is the warm soba soup with duck broth, but everything is good. Highly recommended.
Really Fab authentic Japanese food. Soba noodles would have to be one of the best in Australia. Sashimi is superbly cut and really fresh. Food Quality is exemplary. The pickles Oshinko is served the authentic way with a good variety. I've been eating Japanese food in Sydney for the past 27years, back then most were this good of this standard. I've been frequenting this one for at least the last 3years. Service and Quality is excellent and consistante. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED IF YOU LOVE JAPANESE FOOD.
Food is excellent. Definitely the top pick was the cold soba with warm duck and mushroom broth. Service excellent. Value is also good - 40 each for two entree sizes dishes and two mains. Would definitely go again.
Some of the best. Japanese dishes I have sampled in Sydney.
Worth travelling for the okonomiyaki, which was heavily garnished but quite authentic tasting - and there's quite a few to choose from. Sushi/sashimi was v.good.
Jugemu okonomiyaki is one of the best Japanese pancakes I’ve had as the crispy outer layer and juicy pancake envelopes seafood, well balanced flavours and this was a treat to be served by well trained staff. The freshly made soba with walnut and Japanese mushrooms combines amazing flavours and fresh ingredients to provide a stellar dining experience. The yuzu flavoured paired drink was enjoyable and crisp
Wonderful staff and food. The soba. Loved the matcha snowball! Will definitely come back. Do make a booking early since you may miss out if you don’t have one.
Really enjoyed the food and loved the simple japanese style decor. The tempura was one of the best I have tried in Sydney, and the okonomiyaki was very luxurious with lots of seafood. Hard to find a server at times, but otherwise they were very friendly and even helped us to split our soba noodles into two bowls for sharing which was a really nice touch.
Really good service. Authentic Japanese food, particularly their soba which is made on premises on the day. They also have authentic okinomiyaki - Japanese savoury pancakes with various toppings. Prices are fair, and the quality of the food justifies it.

Cute little Japanese restaurant on Military Rd in Neutral Bay. I was working in Neutral Bay and saw they did Miso Cod so had to get it even if it was takeaway. Such a foodie thing to do! Did not disappoint, this is my favourite all-time dish.
My recommendation;;
Saikyo Miso Cod - grilled Patagonian toothfish marinated in saikyo miso - juicy and flavourful $22
Jugemu & Shimbashi is my favourite Japanese restaurant in Neutral Bay. Everything is always delicious. Only wish would be for Takoyaki to be on the menu!!!
Honestly probably the best Japanese food I've experienced in Australia yet. It felt like eating in Japan. My only regret was not having eaten more. It was DELICIOUS!
My faves from the night were the handmade and homemade soba noodles, the tempura and the blue fin tuna sashimi!
Great Japanese food. Online booking was not great, had to call the store to book. Slightly larger portions would have made it 5 stars.
