Review Central Baking Depot - Sydney

Vinesh Chathurr
Located down a narrow alleyway. Very easy to miss. No dedicated parking available but there few parking lots around the area which are 5-7 minutes walk. No seating available, it is takeaway only. The desserts are very good but too pricey for the quantity.

Love their French pastries. Definitely one of the things I missed the most when I work from home instead of in the city. Before they open, there's already a queue lining outside. Must try their Paris Brest ❤️ Favourite!!

A small bakery in one of the laneways on George st. It was quite an experience just looking through their big glass doors and seeing the chefs making the sweets fresh in front of our eyes. I ordered the cream choux with caramel and a chocolate tart. I really liked the choux as it wasn’t sweet at all and the crunchy caramel slice made it extra special. They also have tarts and croissants and cakes in store so will be back to try it next time. A lovely experience!

A little difficult to find the store. In my opinion it is overpriced. The cheesecake did not meet my expectations; Henri Charpentier is better. I visited the store the day before in the afternoon and all cakes sold out. So I thought must be good. But nope, not going back there.

So I heard that this was the best cheesecake in Sydney so I went there to try the New York cheesecake. It is $10 dollar for a small slice. Must say that the taste is not bad but it is overpriced for sure. All the desserts there are overpriced.

I ordered: 2 Sausage rolls 2 Meat pies 2 Slices of Cheesecake The food was shared amongst a small group of people. The service was good, and it was nice to be able to see the staff baking. The prices were a little high, but I would expect that from a Patisserie in this location and especially one that advertises high end food. The food was hit and miss. The two sausage rolls were pretty terrible, there was way too much fennel and the meat was gristly. One was half eaten and then tossed in the bin, no one wanted to try the other one. The meat pies were excellent - i'd recommend these, in fact this would be a one star review without the meat pies. The cheesecake, one of my favourites was a mixed bag or very bad and very good. The base was good, but too thin, the top was a fantastic consistency, but part of one slice was still runny (undercooked?). Also the flavour was confusingly bad. Both myself and other person who had a slice couldn't decide if it tasted good or not, however it was telling that neither slice was finished and about half of each got thrown in the bin. I'd come back for the meat pies, but nothing else we had today

We went to get a taste of "Sydney's best cheesecake" and were quite disappointed with the result. The taste was good, but we had to wait in line for an hour to order and the product did not live up to the expectations. By the time we could order, they didn't have many of the cakes from the menu and we were very surprised by the amount of cake you get in comparison to the price. Good cake overall, but not worth the wait or what they ask for it and most certainly not the best cheesecake in Sydney.

When you push the door and walk into this little bakery tucked away from main street, you're immediately immersed into centre of a bakers' office experience where the magic happens. You can smell, feel, and see the entire kitchen and experience the buzzing feeling being a baker. I like the design of how they just have one small corner for cashier and the rest of the shop is work area. This really puts you into the perspective of appreciating every creation the bakers make. Now the pastries, divine! The chocolate crossaint is so crispy it melts if that even makes sense (have to try to believe that makes sense). The chocolate was light enough it didn't steal the flavour of the pastry. Will have to try their infamous brownies one day (before they sell out). Just Look at the line during lunch
The Weekend Foodie
Went there for lunch and ordered their cottage pie. My colleague loved this place and raved about it prior to our visit so I had really high expectations. My cottage pie was lukewarm, I like my pies hot. The potato on my cottage pie had a huge chunk of skin that was difficult to chew. The filling was good and I liked the pastry. I will try their sausage roll beef and mushroom pie next time. I will go back but this time my experience was rather average for a $6.5 pie

Had a quick breakfast here with a rhubarb Danish and flat white. The Danish pastry was crunchy filling tasty. Liked it! Love how it's conveniently located near the train station. There are so many tempting baked goods here!

You walk into this place and you can smell all the delicious baked goods from the various breads to the cakes and sausage rolls and pies. Plus the beautiful aroma of coffee.

I go here regularly but today was to try the orange cream cheese chocolate brownie that I heard so much about. I got the last one and it was delicious. Very chocolatey and the orange favour was nice and subtle and not to overpowering.

Cute little bakery, small amount of inside seating. Similar food to Burke Street Bakery, which I love. Great Sausage Rolls & the Lemon Pillows are simply scrumptious.
I ate the Beef & Black bean sausage roll at my desk & the smell bought half the office over asking where I got it!

The best bakery in sydney no doubt the pies sausage rolls pastys everything is done perfect!
I deliver here as a job an everytime i walk in the smell gets me such beautiful pastries and sandwiches.
Owner is great, but we are talking about food not owners.
The food is the devine anf will always be my NO.1 bakery.

A distant cousin to the overrated Bourke Street Bakery, Central Baking Depot is a cafe-bakery hybrid near Wynyard/Barangaroo which offers an assortment of French-style pastries and sandwiches. I helped myself to a couple of their artisan pastries including the fig barberry frangipane tart and cinnamon scroll.

Both pastries were cold (I loved freshly made pastries) and overwhelmingly sweet. On the one hand, the tart is fluffy and crispy on the exterior and the filling is acidic and monotonously sweet. On the other hand, the scroll was stubbornly unchewable and hard (because it was cold on a cold morning). I am not impressed.

Very good bakery with a very tasty cottage pie and sausage roll. Always wanted a Bourke street bakery in the city but this place would definitely give it a run for its money. They also do the pork and fennel sausage roll and it is beautiful.
Eatwithmyfoodsafari
Absolutely love this place! They bring in the breads and baked goods from the other Bourke Street Bakery stores. It is the best of both worlds as you get their top quality goods with the convenience of the city location.

I had visited this place a few times but since my office is further away from it now I haven't visited for a while and decided to check it out. They have nice store with inviting cabinets. Service is friendly and quick too.

They sell a range of breads, sausage rolls, pies, quiches, tarts, cakes, and salads. They also do catering as well. There are so many yummy items it can be overwhelming to decide what you want. I chose a selection of items including a Depot Sourdough Bread (long) 🍞, Lamb, Harissa And Almond Sausage Roll, Roasted Pear And Chocolate Frangipane Tart, and Poached Fig And Barberry Tart. You can't really go wrong with anything really.
Wanderlust
Pros: I liked the Orange chocolate cheesecake. Friendly staff. Location is convenient as it is in CBD wynard.

Cons: the interior of the bakery needs renovation and better decoration. Looked old and dull. I came on Saturday at 11:30am, their selection of pastry was limited. They ran out of sausage rolls, was bummed since I wanted to give that a try. Not many pastries on display.....kinda lame for a bakery. Ambience felt slightly depressing, to be honest, so if u want to eat here then I suggest take away. They should play music or something. We came with a big group of friends and we all thought this place was average and not memorable and not impressive. I don't plan to make any special trips out to this bakery......which is a shame cuz I really wanted to like this bakery since the pics looked good and I live close by.

Just Average: I saw pics of the pear Frang tart so I tried it. My partner and I thought it was ok, nothing special. I wouldn't order it again. I also ordered a ham cheese croissant, it was very average tasting, bread was too greasy, and I was hoping for it to come on a croissant as the name implied but it was a flaky bread thing.....I would have liked a croissant more. Tarts and most pastries cost $5 each, which is typical around Sydney. I think my ham cheese croissant was $6 or something , if so, that is inexpensive so that's cool.

CBD offers a daily meat and vegetarian salad for lunch, on top of their sandwiches and pies. The vegetarian salad was a combination of mixed leaves, olives, roasted sweet potatoes and herbed ricotta. Balsamic dressing and a sprinkling of walnuts on top completed the dish. It was also served with a comically oversized chunk of savoury bread. Had a crumbly rhubarb tart to end the meal.
---Previous visit---
Perfect for an early breakfast as they open their doors at 7am. As other reviewers have noted, the coffee isn't fantastic but still drinkable. I had the gorgeous rustic fruit toast which came with a generous slab of butter. A reasonably priced serving at $3.50 for 2 slices.

love the pork and fennel rolls here, best sausage rolls in all of Sydney. The cakes are also pretty good, love the cheesecake and the chocolate one but the coffee isn't that great (not bad just that there are better options out there). fan of the pies as well but only when it straight fresh out of the oven.
A-Meal-For-Two
Heard about this place from colleague years ago but just got a chance to try them out very recently. Their menu is very very similar to Bourke St for some reason.

First time I went their I bought a sourdough loaf and it was really good. The crust was just crisp enough and you can actually chew fresh bread without hurting your mouth unlike bread from Bourke St. Also unlike other artisan bakery they can slice the bread for you!

Their beef pie however, was incomparable to Bourke St pies. The pastry was crumby but floury and rather thick. Filling was bland and dry.

Coffee was OK but there are plenty of good coffee around CBD, at least on the weekday.

Oh they do open on Saturday! This make them the best option if you want a quick and nice breakfast + coffee if you need to be in CBD on Saturday morning like I do right now...

Cannot remember how many times have I visited this place during me 3 months work on Kent st.
Constantly went there for pastry.when I found it is hard to decide what to get and my trick was to grab whatever just came out of the oven.
The lamb sausage roll changed my view of the sausage rolls and became my priority choice for a budget lunch. It only cost 4.5 bucks and so filling.
Central Baking Depot has many similar menu items to Bourke St Bakery. Lamb and harissa rolls, tarts etc. I tried their chocolate pear frangipani tart, which sounded too gorgeous to pass by. The tart was good - chocolatey with caramelized pear though I was hard put to detect any frangipani. The pastry was fine but lacked the delicacy of the Bourke St tarts. Coffee was also of a decent standard. This is the sort of cafe that I might drop into if passing, but would not make a special trip to visit. Having said that if they were to open up near my work, I don't doubt I'd be clocking up some frequent flyer points.

Great coffee, love the food, breads, and cakes it is hard to make decision once you are in the store (at least for me)
Occasional takeaway order mix up (more than 2x), which was unfortunate because I only realize it when it was too late/too far to go back
Cinntonic
Exceptional coffee. I'll be dreaming about this. Very popular little shop. 9am, 11 waiting for coffee, 4 waiting to purchase... and no one looking unhappy. Lots of people reaching through to collect, as they do order ahead. Generous sized muffin.

I have to admit, I never had cravings for pies or sausage rolls until I had them at Central Baking Depot. I thank this unassuming bakery in Sydney CBD for making me (finally) understand why meat pies are considered the “national dish” in Australia. The best part? They have soup in winter!
Chilli Feli
Sweet tahini cinnamon scrolls... More flakey pastry than a bready roll. There's a citrus glaze which gives a nice balance. My beef and red wine pie had ample meat, the pastry was thin and the flavours light. Their Mexican chicken pie wasn't too bad either. Nice spot for lunch on a weekday.

My friend told me about a delicious sausage roll in the CDB so I walked across Darling Harbour after I already had lunch just to try this place out. By the time I got there I felt like not wasting a walk and ordered both a pie and sausage roll both of which was quite fantastic. The pastry just melts in your mouth... and I think that is the key difference. Don't be put off by the line from this place... it moves quickly and the service is friendly. Recommendation: Probably decide what you want before you get in the line... as you might find yourself up front quick than you think... and not knowing what to order... I suggest the Lamb and Harissa Sausage Roll for something unique and delicious. I also tried their chicken pie.. the filling wasn’t to my liking though.

My oh my! It is flakey, delicious and amazing. Very generous portion of real pork mince filled with fennel and the flavor is SO GOOD.

It is what a sausage roll should be like - flavoursome and genuine. It is really packed with ingredients you can see (none of the whooshy-washy mixture they called mince).
Bad Table Manners
A cute little bakery near work. I’ve had a number of things here, some good, some bad. Their raspberry and which choc brownie was the best I’ve ever had, and their beef pie was terrible.
THEJUGERNAUTS
Loved that they were baking right behind me. That was suitably impressive and quite surprising. It definitley made the CBD a lot more interesting otherwise. Place smelt like cinammon aka heaven.

This is sooo conveniently located in Wynyard for those who work around there…awesome for lunch or breakfast , if you want a pastry, pie or sandwich with your meal! I tried the sausage roll- pork and fennel, had it recently at Bourke St Bakery. Also tried their pear danish which was AMAZING! The pear was a big piece, and juicy and sweet The chocolate croissant was very good as well, pastry was very crispy. This place is good if you’re in Wynyard… But to be honest, I do really prefer the pastry from Bourke St Bakery…I think nowhere can beat them… Anyways, good place to go if you work near Wynyard

This quaint little bakery doesn’t look like your typical CBD Café, but that is exactly where it is. Must order item: Pancetta & gruyere cheese quiche...
Noshbites
The menu consists of lots of yummy pastries and bread. I order a toasted Ham and Cheese Croissant $5 which has full of tasty ham and gooey cheese.

Serving awesome pastries and breads the Central Baking Depot is the little sister of Bourke Street Bakery in Surry Hills.
Ghostface Villa
That it not meet my expectations isn’t entirely its fault, I’d hyped it more than I do a Guns n Roses album, which is never a recipe for success. And Erskine Street is not exactly heaven on earth, just now I just saw the wind blow a small dog over on its side. But there are some essential truths, most of which relate to lemonade, that the CBD upholds and I salute them for that.

...small selection of really really naughty tasty and well deserved (in moderation) snacks...

The great thing about Central Baking Depot is that they are open early on weekday mornings for a coffee and a quick pastry, or for the lovely jam and ricotta toast breakfast, if you have sometime up your sleeve.

There's one word to describe their chocolate ganache tart. Heaven. The pie crust is crisp and brittle. The ganache. Oh my. It's chocolate, it's caramel, it's moreish. There are times when food really does awaken all your senses and this, readers, was one of those moments.

Whenever I visit Taste on Sussex Lane for their baguettes I seem to also visit the Central Baking Depot around the corner to see what sweet goodies are available for an afternoon tea. The Apple and Blackcurrant Tart looks dry from it's appearance but it's
Food Booze Shoes
We seek other lounge-worthy moments nearby and hotfoot it over the road to the Central Baking Depot to marvel at their window filled with baked delights. It's time for dessert as we enter, um-and-ah over the sweet, sweet choices then settle into their uni

I have to admit that I’m a regular here (though I try not to be in concession to my waistline), but I can’t help but love this place.

I'll see you there. Although Central Baking Depot is worth visiting just for the delicious smell I do recommend you venture inside. Their Almond Croissont ($4.40) is moist and almost cake-like in texture and consistency - An absolute treat. The flakey, buttery crust on the sourdough toast keeps me coming back (and I'm not event a fan of crust!) Pair it with some ricotta and honey ($5.50) and I'm a very happy camper. Friendly staff, affordable prices and a decent coffee by Single Origin tops this place off. They bake onsite too so brownie points all around.
Central Baking Depot
Rude staff, food never arrived. Rude staff (esp a fat man wearing glasses manning the till), lazy and neglectful, food never arrived so had to ask for a refund - strongly recommend you DON'T go here

Service is great now with friendly staff and great unusual pastries, breads and pies. The best and only worthwhile cafe down this end of town.
Kidsallgrown2018
Ordered a chicken & vegetable pie and was served a chick pea, spinach, feta & eggplant sausage roll. Umm, right. Two friends ordered sandwiches which took 20 minutes to be delivered. Noise levels unbelievable, and the entire place seems to be a bakery in which the customers sit in the middle of the production area. Yuck! It was my friend's choice - but I certainly wouldn't go back. No thanks!

Great coffee. A good manager at the helm & it'd run smooth.
Shireen Prasad
Indulgent.....choc tart with egg tart kind of pastry
Miffy
Rudest service I have ever seen! The guy just kept yelling " anything else" in a tone like he hated customers. I bothered to travel specially to this part of the city to check the place out and I regret it.
Tiges
Yum. Have seen a lot about bad or rude service but I have never had any issues here. Staff were young, very young, but friendly enough. Food and coffee were DELICIOUS!!!!

Horrible service, nice Sammie. Greeted by a fake as, plastic girl, who obviously seems like she doesn't want to be there. Couldn't be bothered to look down and explain to me what sandwich, I was interested in. Told me 'all our sandwiches are on the board.' So I had to look up. How rude. I was interested in the brown bread Sammie, rather the white. Anywho, ordered a double shot latte, which I was impressed with, along with the Sammie. That's about it. I shall never return here again. Such as shame, everybody else seemed lovely. Did I forget about the meringue I also ordered. Hmm, thanks for a mould of nothingness. Just a hint of coconut and almonds is all I tasted.
Jananas
SPOT ON ABOUT THE SERVICE.. The strawberry and ricotta muffin is delicious, but their masala chai tea is just water and milk. I forgot what else we ordered (from the menu) and that's probably a testament to how average it was. Probably should have just stuck to the pastries and cakes on display because they looked good, but the service is too horrendous to warrant a return visit.
Food Fan
Meh.. Apart from the rude customer service I saw and received (and that was only to grab something to go), the food was great, but I only came because I didn't have time to go to Bourke Street Bakery in Surry Hills.
Allie
Great brekky!. I had strawberry and ricotta muffin. It's amazingly delicious! probably because it's just out of the oven. I also had a decaf latte. hmmm.....what a treat!

Great Bakery must try if in Sydney
Sonya Bennett
Best coffee in Sydney (and that's from a Melbourne gal who is constantly disappointed by bad Sydney lattes).
Pete
If rude and snobby service is what you're after then take a ticket and get in line. You'll be here a while. At the end of the day, they sell bread.I've certainly had better sour doughs and tarts and not had to deal with arrogance behind the counter. One bit of dough they won't have is mine. They're sliced... I mean cut.
The Hungry Badger
Tasty tarts!. This is a great spot for a cake and/or toasted croissant with a full-bodied coffee...when it's open.

Freshly baked bread and pastries with fresh ground coffee makes this a winning spot...when it's open.

The only downside is the hectic queues of people trying to buy the delicious comestibles on offer and the relatively sparse seating area.

The food's totally worth it though.

...when it's open (is *anything* open in the Sydney CBD on the weekends?!)
Lee Bond - Kennedy
Nice pastries. Came here for a mid afternoon coffee and snack. Picked up a latte and a pain au chocolat and found the pastry delicious and the coffee decent.
A nice touch is that part of the work area is open and you can see and hear the bakers.
Lynne
Best Bread outside of France. I purchased a loaf of the date and walnut and it's the best bread I've had since returning from France in July this year. Better than many bakeries in Paris and regional France. The bread was moderately dense and chewy with a crunchy crust and the dates beautifully sweet.
Anouk
Lovely. Nice sourdough and ricotta. Would love to try the cakes next time.
