Review Dove & Olive Pub - Sydney

Ferdinand
Yesterday I was here around 12.30, and this Smoked Beef Ribs on food special just can’t be ignored. When the food came, first thing I noticed was .. oh… how do I eat this whiteout being messy? Beef Ribs was plated in kinda entree/small sharing plate. It’s really hard to eat without being messy on the table. In my opinion, Chef could use better plate for presentation. Food was flavour some, but since chips was tucked underneath the beef ribs it self, and soaked with some braising sauce, it was all soggy. Overall it was great, service was good enough and place was clean. However If you are UFC fans, this place is not showing pay preview of UFC.

One of the better places in Sydney for a Sunday Roast. The vegetables and Yorkshire pudding and gravy were tasty. The beef was nice but the lamb lacked flavour. Cost $26 and portions were generous (loved the extra gravy on the side as well). Pub is a little dingey and could do with some TLC. Service was ok.

We had a sensational Sunday lunch enjoying the winter sun outside. The pub was very busy and there were alot of places to sit inside though it was noisy. The roast of the day was so large we easily could have shared the plate and as it was we definitely didn’t need dinner that night! Enjoyed a couple of middies with our meal suggested by the bar staff. Everyone was super friendly and obliging. Will definitely return for a meal!

One of the best Sunday roasts we've had in Sydney... huge portions, tons of very tasty gravy. Good veggies. The Yorkshire pudding wasn't very good but given how good the rest of the meal was, we didn't mind. Great value for money!!

3.4 - The staff were friendly and helpful but the steak I ordered was pretty bad. It didn't taste fresh and my order of Medium turned up as Well Done. The Mushroom sauce was slopped all over the steak but didn't have much of a taste (The carrots and mash were nice though). The others enjoyed their Parma/Parmy and Beers though so that was good for the others. It was cool that we got to book our tables and enjoyed being out on the terrace!

Superb beer selection and friendly staff. They have many local brewers on tap with a board providing more information on type, ABV, price etc. Which really helps you decide and know what you're going to get! The food is nothing exceptional, but definitely good enough for a pub feed. Great for casual catch ups or work drinks.

A charming and quaint Surry Hills pub that provides a great option for functions. We hired out an upstairs room for a birthday party and were impressed by the quality options for food, alcohol and the space. The space itself is large enough to accommodate 30 people comfortably and the decor with cute stain-glass lights and hunting lodge busts added to the quaint atmosphere. All in all would recommend for a dinner and drink or two, as well as functions.

Busy pub with great atmosphere. We went today for Sunday lunch. Lucky to find a free table as most were reserved. Didn't think to make a booking, so would highly recommend reserving table. We had their Sunday Roast (lamb) and the classic cheese burger with chips. Both hearty and big serves.

It's a pretty standard pub with standard pub fare. If you're looking for a fancy lunch this isn't a gastro pub. I had a steak with fries, leafy greens and pepper sauce for just under $13 last week. Steak was tough as old boots, fries were decent, pepper sauce was excellent (very peppery!). Leafy greens were exactly what it said on the tin - some greens with a bit of dressing.

For a no frills weekday lunch it's not bad but I still prefer the Shakey up the street.
The RnB Diary
Ever since he moved to Sydney, Mr RnB has been searching for a venue that captured the spirit of Britain’s greatest contribution to mankind – the pub. And on one dark and wintery night in Sydney, he may have just found it. ceilings were low, the wood was dark and the beer was cold. The scene was the upstairs bar of Surry

This bar has a great atmosphere and setting. There are wooden tables and chairs, with various mounted heads on the walls. The lights are interesting too, and warmly dimmed. A great place to hang out with a meal and drink.

I’ve had the chicken schnitzel here twice and it was perfect. The salad and chips it came with was also great. My companions ordered burgers and were also satisfied. Trivia night was relaxed and lively too.
Princess Greedy Guts
Classic, old fashioned pub with a big menu of all traditional favourites. From steak to schnitzels, burgers & lots of nibbles to share, there is something to please everyone in big groups or small. The schnitzel was lovely, fish had a nice crunchy coating, steak was over done. Chips are dusted with chicken salt which is addictive. A huge list of beers & staff are friendly and service fast.

Our gang from school usually meets at the Shakespeare but to try something different, we went to Dove and Olive. I like the name, which reminds me of all those pubs in London with the same theme: Slug and Lettuce, Hare and Cabbage, Pig and Leek. OK. I am making up some of these but the combinations seemed endless.

Who doesn’t like a quick fish and chips from the local pub?

Stopped by Dove & Olive with my coworkers last Friday during our work team lunch as they all felt like some good old pub grub.

I couldn’t make up my mind between the rump steak or the battered barramundi so of course, I ended up with the fish (low risk of over-cooking).

I was surprised the fish tasted fresh (not fishy but you know that ocean taste?), the flesh was soft and flaky and most importantly, the barramundi was perfectly battered all around. The chips also came out fresh, crispy and hot. The side salad is just salad with some dressing so I’m not going to dive any deeper into talking about that. And finally the chunky tartare sauce did pack a punch in flavour and complimented the fish well. Serving size was also very generous!

The service here was very quick and attentive, even though it was pretty busy during lunch time. They also had a sauce shelf where you could pick up any extra bottles of sauce for your food such as the classic tomato, bbq and they even had sriracha!

I’m not a person who would usually pick a pub to eat at as a first option but this place served pretty well.
Frankiieshungrytummy
The food here wasn't too bad.
It has a cute little seating area which is nice and the service wasn't too bad either.
Prices are pretty average and serving sizes aren't too bad.

Came here for Christmas lunch with colleagues.
They have great selection of beers. Finger food is great. Main is your typical pub food but with better presentation and taste.
Pizzasnob
If you are in Surry or surrounding suburbs and fancy craft beverages - look no further. With $5 schooners and 24 beers on tap (I counted) I have a feeling this pub is leading the charge with carft beer.
We had pork and gravey wedges (don't know what it is called on menu) but it was worth every penny. We were a group of 20 and the staff looked after us.
Give this hidden gem a go you won't regret it.

The owner needs to sample the food ..really needs to be better .I know its only pub grub but a tasty burger and fries should be easy peasy 101 ! Last one I had on a recent Friday night was at best bland with overcooked fries. As Leyton Hewitt once cried "COME ON "!!!!!!!!!! get it right and get a rep as best pub burgers in town , there is a challenge for you. Otherwise decent pub. cheers.
Salted Caramel
Not a fan. Floppy chips, cut up lettuce for salad, glue mushroom sauce. Won’t be back to this one. However- many people here enjoying themselves for a drink on a Friday night. Nice vibe....

The best Mushroom Risotto in Surry Hills! Yes, you heard me right. This resto bar has so much to offer, they have a really good seating section, good staff and great food. They have a variety of drinks to choose from and they also help you with complimenting your drink with your dish. I'm going back very soon!

A cool pub, large size with an upstairs area as well. They've got great pub food options and usually pretty tasty. I got a schnitzel with mushroom sauce, a side of fries and salad.
Unfortunately maybe because the place was busy, it was a bit cold. We also got a side of sweet potato fries and hickory smoked mac and cheese balls. These were good. Footy is on tv and a good crowd. A great range of beers on tap.

What a cute little pub in Surry Hills within walking distance of Central Station.
Came here for a 30th for dinner and drinks and got the closed balcony area. The food was excellent pub grub and inexpensive. Huge beer list on tap, unique cocktails and all the other usual drinks as well. Service is polite and sufficient as they accommodated most of our requests (eg., putting the cake in the freezer).

Easy to spend a few hours here. On the night we were there, it was packed with people catching the rugby matches so it does get rowdy and crowded on the main floor. The upper floor is mainly for dining patrons.

Once again I was in Sydney for a weekend. Though unfortunately there wasn’t anywhere near as much time for food as I would have hoped. Bu Thankfully I did get the chance to eat at the Dove & Olive in Surry Hills. I didn’t have my photography A-game on either sorry as I had decided to take the food blogger cap off for today and was more there to hang out and enjoy the company.

I ordered a steak at regular price and I think they gave me the leftover from express lunch which was on special before - the chips were hot, salad was fresh but the steak was only slightly warm and that's very strange - other than pre cooked steak I can't think of anything else.
I told the staff, she offered me that they ll heat it up - I told her my steak was already medium well done if they heat it up wouldn't it become overcooked? And she told me "No" and I really wonder how a steak put back on to heat up would not get overcooked....no surprise it came out rough like wood so sent back to kitchen again and they redo it, yet still came out as well done so I just had some couldn't be bothered to send back for the 2nd time.
Very disappointing good quality and service. Won't come again.

Great food especially the jalapeno burger and awesome trivia night on Tuesday! Also visited Sunday about a month ago and the roast was delicious and the craft beers were great! Did the whole night with a couple of beers and a roast for under $35!

A nice place if you're up for a bit of a 'beer barn'. The dove an olive offers a moderate set of wines/beers/cocktails, which are quite affordable. The ambiance is quite hectic and vibrant, and the patronage was average.
We ordered a house white wine (sorry no pics I forgot) which was okay, not too bitter meanwhile my friend ordered a 'double hops' beer which he said was nice.
I recommend for anyone after a quick drink before heading home in the arvo or a drink with colleagues after work.
Lunch Pie
Top notch pub grub. Came here with a group of four and really enjoyed it. Fast and friendly service. Very generous portion size and unbelievable value. Wasn't drinking but they have a great selection of craft beers on offer. Would definitely come back here
Dr. Foodie ..
Excellent place for quality pub food and an excellent draft selection highlighting microbrews. I was staying down near central station and was a frequent visitor here.
I simply love this pub due to its craft beers and they always have craft beer on tap-and a lot of it!!
More importantly this is a pub that has the Battle of the Beer-this is where a competition occurs between two different brewers, and the winner is on tap for the entire month.
Food in general was average, the fries, sweet potato fries and nachos were good. Pizzas were nice.
A must go place for any beer lover ❤️

Went to Dove and Olive to get a couple of drinks and a bite to eat got ignored by all the staff there for around 10 minutes until we finally got someone's attention. Found a table but had to go to the counter to order ourselves even though there was plenty of people that could have taken it. Didn't feel comfortable at all so left. Wouldn't go back there ever
Keane Hughes
Cool place. It's a shame I had one of the worst burgers I have ever eaten in my life there, it also took 35 minutes to come out. The blandest and wet pattie I have ever experienced, the schnitzel is a safer bet. Sadly that burger has put me off the place for good.
Milalu
Terrible food, smoky inside from smokers too close to dining area, NEVER going back! "Crispy" skin salmon was soggy, overcooked and served on an oily potato hash. I trust Sydney has higher standards than that for a $30 meal!!!! Don't bother going!!
The City Lane
Dove and Olive is one of Sydney’s top craft beer venues, offering punters a choice from over 20 taps of local and international craft beers on regular rotation, along with a decent bottle selection.

If you're a carnivore you have to be here, amazing food and good staff,
One of my order got messed up but staff handled it professionally,
If suggest this place to my friends and kin for sure.
Clint Brayne
New menu sucks

Why change what was a great menu into something that is a shell of what it once was. Very disappointing experience! The food was once tasty and good. Please change it back.
Ines
Sorry my pics suck. Went there for a good few decent pints and they have a lot to offer ! The place was quite nice and very well located and the staff was funny and helpful ! Got the ribs for myself, it's a bit surprising as it doesn't come as a rack or half rack but a bone with a good chunk of meat attached to it. The meat was very very tasty and I was craving for more, but actually after finishing my plate I'm not sure I could have had more as it also comes with fries (nothing special about them) and a home made kale slaw actually tasty ! Will go back for food and beers !

I ordered the chef special on the day. Which is the baby poke rib. We came as a 8 people and waited food for nearly one and half hour. The first time I asked after 45mins the answer was : another 5 mins, it's come out soon. And I asked again after 1 hour waiting. The response was: sorry kitchen lost your order.

We got some beers and wine on the house but this probably won't compensate the 1.5 Hr waiting for cheese burger?

If rate the food itself, it was ok. My rib is a bit hard to cut, but the sauce is nice. Shared a little bit of my friend's cheese burger, I like the taste (but again, among 5 burgers we ordered, 2 were not cooked properly and one still kind of cold inside, but we just don't have time to change anymore)

Tips: maybe not come here during peak hours. Kitchen gets too busy and accident do happen
We popped in for a Sunday roast, at $17 it's great value! The food itself was fine although there was no mint sauce which should be an essential for a lamb roast. We sat fairly close to the male bathrooms and unfortunately the vile smell coming out was overwhelming. The cutlery was pretty dirty too.
GobbleDok
Thursday burger night, beef, crumbed chicken or pulled pork $9.90. Beef was bland, chicken was more flavour combination. The size was smaller but with chips and for this price, it's good value.
Lots of varieties of craft beers, price is reasonable. Service at counter was too cool to be friendly.
John J Maxwell
Great Pub with a good beverage selection and tasty food. We'll definitely be busting often. Service is good, good crowd and decor is stylish & comfortable.

Called in for lunch yesterday. I ordered the chefs special beef ragu with pappardelle pasta. The meal was disappointing as the meat was cold and dry, pasta hot, no sauce present on the plate. I would expect that a chefs special would be an outstanding meal. My wife ordered 2 entrees, Sweet potato wedges and calamari ..... Both fine. I am a local and I love this pub but standards must be maintained and consistent.

Simply Starving
Great pub in Surry Hills. We came here after a sporting match at the SCG and it was packed but service was fast and food was good. I ordered the beef nachos and was very satisfied - big portion and one of the beet nachos I've had in Sydney!

Excellent food, very fast service and the friendliest staff in town.Large servings and very fresh food.Their lunch specials are excellent value.Well done.
Yusuf Christian
I just had a really nice dinner here. The food was really good and in affordable price. I tried their Angus rump steak with chips and salad. Nice place and recommended!

Really disappointed, called up to ask if Nick was doing trivia, was told yes. Booked a table for a large group and Nick isn't there. The food was really disappointing, we used to come every week and it was awesome. Chicken Po Boy was cold, dripping with water as if it had been frozen and topped with ketchup. Group won't be back.

Just up the hill from Central train station you will find some awesome little pubs around Surry Hills, one of which is the Dove and Olive.
This pub has an awesome selection of craft beer and plenty of yummy food.
On our recent visit we had sweet potato wedges, buffalo wings and chipolata pulled pork po boy.
The servings are generous and food is well
presented and very tasty.
We have been here a few times before and as always have a great time.
Well worth a visit if in the area.

Love this place - booked for 15 people on a Friday night for my birthday and had a wonderful time. Drink specials kept prices way down and everything on the menu was reasonably priced. The food was absolutely delicious - I had the rump steak with blue cheese sauce and also tried the pork ribs. Both were very tasty and surprisingly good value. Overall, the menu is classic pub fare with a bit of flare, which for me makes all the difference. Meals arrived swiftly, even with the pub totally packed out. I'm not a big beer drinker, but there are many choices available and they even have suggestions for matching meals on the menu.

In the heart of Surry Hills lies Dove & Olive, a pub popular with locals with cheap food and drink, and a great atmosphere to go with it. I met Lex after work on Friday after booking a table for us and my Mum and Dad and surviving some excruciating traffic on Qantas Drive. After passing the creepy security guard and edging my way through the hoards of people, I managed to meet Lex in the upstairs dining area (which was also really busy – luckily I booked!). The dining area has two bars as well, so you don’t need to go downstairs for your drinks. The drinks were cheap – although originally I thought $12 for a Vodka + cranberry and a Pale Ale was really expensive, until Lex told me clearly I hadn’t bought a round in a long time (perks of being a female?!).

Keep reading on the blog:

I went here on a Wednesday night with a group of friends, hearing good things about this pub, we thought of giving it a try. It's quite quirky inside this pub as you walk in, however each room is quite small - so it wasn't the best for conversations as we had to literally yell to talk as it was extremely noisy and loud - It was lucky we reserved a table as the whole pub was PACKED!

Anyway, we ordered their sweet potato wedges with cheese and this was so delicious we ordered two plates! Yum! Then when it came to ordering mains, we saw it was Steak Day so decided to go with some steaky specials.. But once we ordered, they told us ALL steaks were sold out :( ..But shortly after we were told that they have one steak available, which when they served to us was quite teeny tiny.. Not a very filling steak.. But thats what you get I guess for paying $9.90! The Pork Belly salad was okay, a little dry though so I didn't end up finishing it.

All in all its a good pub with huge selection of beer, however the food was a bit of a let down, I'd be keen though to give this place another go perhaps on another night to try their schnitzels or po' boys.
Daniel Sutti Mansutti
The presentation of the food is quite amazing, but the lack of amount on your board is an ongoing issue. Especially when you pay 16$ for a schnitzel and they cut breast in half and serve that too you.
Apart from the servings it tasted great. Quality beer and quality ambience.
Does My Bomb Look Big In This
It is ‘Thirsty Thursday’ at the Dove & Olive, and in addition to $5 craft beer schooners, everyone seems to be tucking into the $9.90 burger special. This would normally seem par for the course, but since it is 38 degrees outside I can’t quite face a burger and just need something cold. Lo, the cure to what ails me is a refreshingly bitter and citrus-smelling schooner of Willie the Boatman Corn Ale ($10).
Two Girls One Fork
This is better than your average pub grub. Craft beers, great food and cool vibes. Stand out dishes for us include the crispy skinned salmon with seasonal veggies and dill. That soft and flaky meat! We never wanted it to end. The Crispy Pork Belly Salad was also a winner. Generous portions of SUPER crispy pork stop a fresh salad. Hello, Summer.

Make sure you grab a side of sweet potato wedges (topped with cheese, of course!) for a little bit of comfort food indulgence.

The Dove & Olive is dangerous close to becoming our local away from home. TGOF approved!
Peanutbutter&jelly
Decent steak here I had the one with the blue vein cheese and asparagus. It was cooked well and it also came with shoestring fries. My friend got the burger and I sound recommend that one though. The atmosphere is pretty chill and not too crowded on a Sunday night.

Awesome vibe in this cute little pub. Love all the decor, the atmosphere was great. We got pizzas and they were really good, would have loved more topping on them, but taste was great. Drinks were decently priced and I loved that Stonewood was on tap! Overall a nice little place with good food and drinks

Maybe it was cos the wait staff was busy or to loud to hear the order but I ordered the Peri Peri chicken po bo and ended up getting the pulled pork one and they didn't even apologize when I told them it was the wrong order and they didn't even offer to take it back and give the right order, I won't be back here any time soon pretty dissapointed.

Once you enter Dove & Olive you will quickly realise that this is not your average pub. The polished wood and leather interiors are not the only fancy things this inner city tavern has to offer. Every Mon-Thurs you can grab yourself a $9.90 meal and it is an absolute bargain!

I love a good lobster roll and was stoked to see their offer of $9.90 po'boys every Tuesday. The bargain menus are clearly popular as even on a quiet Tuesday, tables were mostly filled or reserved. We settled on 3 different po'boys, the lobster, Cajun chicken and pulled pork. Each was served in a 9inch baguette with a side of French fries.

Portions are very generous and for $9.90 you just cant go wrong. To be brutally honest, the lobster was a little overcooked and the pork too dry, but really, who cares, the chips are awesome and drinks are reasonably priced. Bring some friends and it'll be a great night out for everyone and won't burn a whole in your wallets.

If you're not a fan of po'boys, Monday is Schnitty night, Wednesday's steak and Thursday's for burgers. There's 4 out of your 7 dinners planned this week, you're welcome.
A Food Lover
Fantastic friendly staff. The service is great! Your people are definitely your asset. Had the schnitzel, wings, cheese sticks (must), sweet potato, pie (amazing). The place itself is great for a relaxing after work catch up with friends. Can get busy so make sure you book

A nice local style pub. I love the specials at this place and food theme nights eg. Schnitzel nights. The lobster roll special was ok - I enjoyed the lobster mix just by itself rather then on the roll. Great place for a beer with mates.
Gin'n'Blonde On The Beaches
I'd been meaning to get to the Dove & Olive for yonks and finally made it on a Monday pre gig at the Horden. It had a really cosy atmosphere and I was surprised how busy it was for a Monday. Great selection of beers on tap and vast menu to chose from. The food was ok, not mind blowing but tasty enough and decent portions. Overall a good experience if you're looking for a traditional pub vibe!
Steak Me Out
I was expecting much worse for the $15 you pay for the half rack and rump, it wasn't mind blowing but it was cheap food done equal to the price you pay.
Beckyingram15
Long wait, cold food and staff and management that don't care. Two friends and I went here on a Sunday lunchtime in high hopes for a good meal and great atmosphere; we got neither!
We waited an hour and a half for our food which when it came was bland and cold. There seemed to be no logical order to the food coming out of he kitchen. A nearby table with more diners, ordered after us, got there food before us, ate and left the pub all in the time we waited for ours. To top it all off the staff didn't seem to care and blamed it on being 'busy'. When delivering this standard of service I don't think the Dove and Olive will be 'Busy' for much longer.
Sbsheehan1
Horrible experience. I have been here a few times now and have had bad experiences everytime. I went on Sunday, staff were rude, I waited an hour and a half for my food even though new
Tables has come and gone, when we eventually went up to the bar they said it will be another 15 minutes (they basically forgot about our order and took no responsibility.). When it finally arrived it was cold. Everyone I spoke to was very uninterested and unhelpful and there was no apologies. The manager had no idea what he was doing, he said he would find out why it was taking so long and didn't come back, the customer service is terrible! This is putting my experience lightly, I will not be going back again.
Carol.peters
Cold Sunday Lunch. Visited last Sunday for Sunday Roast Dinner, very disappointed, vegs we're cold as if straight from fridge, crackling was actually very nice as well as the meat. But severed on a cold plate, limited gravy so we asked
For more, but unfortunately arrived too late and too little, served in a little plastic ketchup dish! Hardly enough for 3!
We complained to the waiter, he seemed amused and said he would let the chef know the dinners were a little on the cold side, we didn't see him again after that. I emailed the pub the next day as very disappointed but have yet to receive a reply!

We popped in to Dove & Olive at Surry Hills for dinner before our karaoke night. While we were trying to find a table to fit the half-dozen of us, we saw a waitstaff carry two big delicious-looking pizzas to a table. I was sure I was going to get a pizza, and became super sure I was definitely going to get them when I saw that pizzas were on specials on Saturdays! There were only 4 choices so the decisions were easy; Richard and I shared The Dove (as I always say, you should order any dish named after the place) and the Shrimp & Spicy Pork Sausage pizzas. They both tasted as good as they looked, all for only $9 each. The others enjoyed their Wild Mushroom pizzas as well. I hope to revisit on different nights to try their other specials.
Dimsumforone
Despite the recent kitchen overhaul and attractive meal specials, Dove & Olive really struggled to impress when it came to quality. The acoustics also make for a surprisingly raucous environment during peak periods, which certainly makes the place lively but conversation at non-hollering tones difficult...

Yes, you read correctly. Sydney, the ultimate lobster roll has landed.
And, it's not a teeny-tiny lobster roll for that (ouchy) double digit price tag.
Snap Eat Love
The KB Hotel on the foothills of Surry Hills had spent years as a grotty neighborhood boozer, however, after a radical overhaul from the team behind Dove and Olive; set out to captivate new audiences with its fresh look as the Keg and Brew. The details are good where they matter, frozen taps and a bar-load of Australian craft beers. The interior is a treat to any beer loving enthusiast; the rotating list of hand pumped beers feasting the imagination with an endless possibility of the nights' endings. Similar to its sister outlet, Keg and Brew has some pretty nifty daily meal deals like Tuesday's Black Angus rump steak with fries and organic green salad and Wednesday's pulled pork po'boys with fries; all for only $9.90! If that doesn't float your boat, I don't know what will! Head Chef Devendra Sherchan, formerly of Dove & Olive has playfully injected a bit of Southern American flavor in the usual pub grub, this manifesting in the form of mainstays such as the KBFC ($19)- Southern styled buttermilk fried chicken with Louisiana hot mayo, french fries and crunchy salad. While this dish is not jaw-dropping; the promises of a light and crispy spicy coating removed - the peppery sauce was sublime - the mountain of fries slowly evaporating with each momentous dunk. Best ignore the KB Burger ($15), my hopes dashed with the house made black Angus beef pattie cooked within an inch of its life. The meat was hard and dry with oppressively burnt ends - the caramelized onions, gruyere cheese and heavy dousing of KB BBQ sauce had nothing on it, failing to breathe any life into the dish. Please don't get me started about those crumbly brioche buns, I swear I see fumes leaving the crown of my head. At the end of the rather lackluster experience, satiate your outstanding cravings with more craft beer. My favourites are the Rocket Science (Dennis Brewing co) and The Kahuna (batchbrewingcompany). Alternatively, you could traverse the streets to Dove and Olive for some awe-inspiring

Dove and Olive is definitely not another typical pub. In fact it is a combination of old favourites from the downtown New York American diner with the hearty comfort of Italian.
Weekendfoodescapes
My friend was still hungry after dinner so we sought a place with drinks and some food. We settled on Dove and Olive. It was lively and jam packed. We sat down and my friends settled for cider. I had my typical vodka cranberry. We sat around chatting about travelling in areas of Korea and Japan. Our drinks rested on a record which was funky. The decore was trendy full of children of the 90's. We snacked on potato gems which were attempting to be fancy. They were tasty but titled " D&O Tater Tots Parmesan mashed potato poppers with house made mixed pepper, celery salt & aioli". The aioli was nice but I wasn't a fan of the mixed pepper and celery. Will come back to try other food Drinks on a record Potato Gems - $8
The Sydney Tarts
...standard pub grub, from pasta, burgers and steaks to pizzas and Chicken Parmigiana, but there’s also a kids’ menu. Amongst the items in their bistro menu are ten “all day specials” for $10 each, and we both ended up ordering items from the $10 section.
I Ate My Way Through
The good news is that the Dove & Olive, nestled in the leafy streets of Surry Hills, is providing the people with po’boys every Tuesday – you don’t even have to strike to get them! With summer in the great Southern land in full swing, the pub is offering daily specials. Tuesday is po’boy day, and there are four options on special to enrich the meal times of the Surry Hills folk. The po’boys on offer include Lobster , Fried Cajun Shrimp , Peri Peri chicken and Pulled Pork (all $9.90). I was lucky enough to sample all four flavours. While I am generally a chicken gal, I enjoyed the pulled pork immens
That Girl
This is a great place to have a beer with your mates. It's got a laid back pub vibe without the old men and smell of stale beer. I would definitely come back for a Sunday session.

Not happy. We always come here to try burger on thursday but this week we all were not happy with quality we got not same quality as before some of the burger we got were really dry & bun was not soft as used to be not happy with quality as before..

NO Urgency. My colleagues and I went to Dove and Olive for lunch one day on our break as we work in Surry Hills and only a short walk from the establishment. When we arrived there were three people working behind the bar. One was a smaller blonde girl whom had absolutely no urgency. I have never witnessed someone working so slowly while being so busy. She looked over my colleagues and I multiple times until we eventually had enough and left. We ate at Forrester's that day.I will say this is not good for your establishment seeing as we work for a corporate office of 50+ right around the corner. My colleagues and I were very dissatisfied and unimpressed with her lack of urgency or personality. I will say, as far as the other two people behind the bar (gentleman with beard and Asian girl) they seemed very on their toes and were providing spectacular service.

Solid.

In brief, Dove and Olive has become a sort of fave for solid pub grub. All menu items that I have thus far tried, including the burgers / sandwiches and schnitzels, are consistently good. The fries, however, are generally too salty for my liking.

The wide selection of craft beers is a job well done (and the primary reason for such a high rating). However, the the service has widely varied, from pleasant to downright inattentive, rude, and unhelpful. (Interestingly, I was once served by a staff who had no idea what a chicken parmigiana was. Another time, we had a rude guy who seemed under pressure but also seemed snobby, rude and almost aggressive in the first place; his accent was also unusual and difficult to place, so perhaps this is a cultural thing?)

The interior design and theme is inspired; and, the place is not too bad, but it does become packed quite easily and noisy in the evenings.

Delish!. Tried the $9 po'boy on Tuesday and oh boy it was so good! Portion was perfect to curb hunger late at night!

Love the Wednesday $9 steak deal here - delicious chargrilled steak with chips and salad, amazing value! Great beer selection - heaps of craft beers.
This place keeps getting busier and busier, a great, unpretentious local.

Great find!. Stumbled across this pub and I'm so glad I did. I love the decor and a great feed for only $9. Food was of good quality and the staff were friendly. I'll definitely be back to try their other specials!

No atmosphere. The place looks like it's trying to copy every other craft beer venue around surry hills but very poorly. Not quite sure what the theme of the place is? The beer and food is overpriced for what you get and the staff all look stressed and disinterested. Probably won't be visiting again.

The brioche bun topped off a delicious burger. The side of crispy fries and salad made this a perfect burger, next time they can leave off the tomato sauce, they're bottles of sauce available for self service was the best we've seen.

Very loud and poor service. I was excited by the menu and hype around this pub so went along for lunch. Ordering at the bar was a bit of an ordeal - there is no distinct line and it's so noisy that the staff can't hear you. There are multiple staff wandering around who just look at you and wander past (as if waiting to see who has the misfortune of taking someone's order next). I had to repeat my order twice and then, after the staff member went and fiddled around at the register, he had forgotten the order and I had to say it again. No receipt is given and the change is given in a pile of silver coins.

The environment is noisy and it's difficult to have a conversation. After about 45 minutes our meals come out with a sarcastic "sorry for the delay". The tater tots are just frozen potato gems with cheap parmesan...not crispy and very disappointing for $8.

My burger tasted pretty good but be warned of the toothpick which I would've bitten if I didn't remove the lid of the burger to put sauce on it and saw it there. The bun is very sweet and the burger is messy to eat. The fries on the side are luke warm.

Companion had a steak sandwich and it's grey and unappetising.

All in all, this is probably more of a place for beer drinkers than gourmet eaters.

Ordinary. Prices might be reasonable, but the quality/quantity is somewhat underwhelming.
To find out that 5 of the mains are unavailable after deciding is also unprofessional! Won't be rushing back.

Love it. We've loved the Dove and Olive since they were taken over from the Devonshire. Great food at such a stupidly good price. We were lucky for this to be our local for a long time.

Interesting deco, nice food at a good price.

Craft Beer Heaven!. Has to be the best selection of craft beer in Sydney!
Must try the the Blue Cheese Steak & match it with the delicious Riverside "69"

Surry hills winner. The D&O has gone from strength to strength since the it's been under new management. My group of friends frequent the venue regularly, and there is always something new; whether its food specials, a new craft beer, or some taxidermy hanging on the wall. Great value pub grub too if you're feeling peckish. The dishes are better than other options in Devonshire St, and still as affordable. Highly recommended.

Kris. Craft beer heaven!! I was both suprised and delighted when we stumbled across this place...... the menu is great value, the pub itself looks awesome and so much craft beer to choose from! I can't believe this used to be the Clarendon! We're def coming back!

D&O Burger. Try their burger, it's nice with apple cider too! Don't mind coming back again, lol

Came here for Friday night drinks. Vibe was good but service was terrible! There were 2 girls behind the bar but 1 was just standing there wiping cutlery while the other was running around frazzled trying to serve the 5 people waiting. The cutlery girl eventually helped out (but not sure how much help she was because neither girls could get the cork out of my bottle of sparkling and had to rely on the guy standing next to me to do it). The main girl serving was pretty rude too & grabbed an Eftpos receipt out of a customers hand, glaring at her and saying "no that's ours". It wasn't me that she did it too but I was pretty shocked at the rudeness! Given the bad service, lack of hospitality and that the place was nothing special anyway, I was happy to leave when our table came up elsewhere and probably wouldn't come back.

Emperor's new pizza. Ok, so the predominantly timber fitout looks warm, inviting (all the moreso on a bucketing sunday evening, pares theatre) and unpretentious. tick.

and the staff look smart. tick.

and the $15 roast pork blackboard special, including a beer or glass of house wine, promising (seeing it on a plate later, it looked especially so). tick.

indeed, the menu overall and much of the other food emerging from the kitchen, looked particularly good. tick.

but when one orders a an eggplant and spinach pizza, which promises, as well, artichoke, fennel, semidried toms & lemon zest, is one being unreasonable in expecting said toppings?

yes, mozzarella was in evidence. spinach. and semidried toms. but that's it. it might as well have been a margarita, albeit with spinach supplanting basil.

I was hungry. I wanted topping. I wanted what we ordered.

on complaining, a barmaid told me the eggplant was in the sauce. 'I know it sounds weird, but i is', she insisted. I waved her away in disgust. it was weird. and patently untrue. give me a break! what sauce? there was none.

don't get me wrong. it was a very fine pizza, in other respects. excellently thin and crispy crust. and it tasted good, insofar as it went. it just didn't go far enough.

it wasn't unreasonably priced. or wouldn't have been, had it had the topping promised.

when another staffer came to collect the platter, I said, 'that was a very good pizza, save for the fact it had no eggplant, artichoke, fennel, or lemon zest'. no comeback.

so I told the manager my tale of pizza woe. 'yeah, they slice it very thinly. I agree with you, a pizza should be rustic. but they're very precious in the kitchen.' thinly?! I'll say! so thinly it only appears on one side of the knife. the proprietor's side.

namechange, new fitout, new website and international celebrity chef-designed menu notwithstanding, there's no excuse for treating customers with this kind of contempt.

the hotel clarendon is now called the dove and olive. but if you're ordering a dove and olive pizza, don't expect any dove. or olive.
