This is a pretty okay casual Japanese restaurant. The chicken katsu curry was really good, and my highlight dish. The chicken was very crispy on the outside and juicy inside. The aburi salmon and spider (soft shell crab) roll were both pretty good as well.
Love this place. Such a cute little Japanese restaurant that feels hidden away. Food was very delicious and service was great. Price is reasonable. Restaurant is a bit small.
This place has a similar vibe to the small hideaway restaurants in Japan. The lunch sets were a decent feed and good value,m. However the good did take a while to come out.
+3 standard points for standard food
+1 every dish is well designed and executed
+1 no dud dishes
Noise level: quiet
Recommended Plates:
Creamy eggplant entree (Decadent)
Eggplant and Tofu main (Rich and crispy!)
Toothfish (read: butter)
Any of the rolls! (Any!)
Dud dishes: none!
Kitchen: carefully executed dishes. The restaurant puts their own twist on the asian fusion rolls. “Volcano roll” or “California roll” originated as new fusion of favours. I think Nazimi does a great job with tasty new combinations. I’ve found their flavour matching delicious!
Venue: Small. A touch more upscale than the proximity to chinatown / world square would suggest. Staff are polite, and the quiet atmosphere allows you to give full attention to your companions.
Lovely little Jap restaurant in town. I’ve been there so many time for their sukiyaki, quite cheap and portion is just right for two. Thumb up for the kitchen and service staff.
This is a very small japanese restaurant located on the under ground with just 20-25 seated. If you come in at lunch time you probably have to wait for a little while.Taste of foods was very good and originally. Try their sashimi it was very fresh sashimi and also good quality of raw fishes. A service was excellent here. But probably a little bit pricey for this small restaurant. But it's worth to try.
Visited this place after getting reminded that it exists by my coworkers (It's so so close to where I work!) and decided to check it out for dinner. Went in around 6pm and a few tables were already taken so I'd say get in early if you don't want to wait long. Ordered Takoyaki, Sashimi (Med), Blue Cheese Nigiri (One of the specials), a Dragon Roll and Chicken Katsu. Everything tasted great, but I don't think the prices are worth it for some of the dishes. $20 for the Dragon Roll and $16 for the Blue Cheese Nigiri (4 pieces)... I dunno man. I'll probably stick with the Chicken Katsu. The presentation of all the dishes were lovely though! ^_^ Might try their set menus next time, maybe they are better value.
Outstanding value for money!! A whole sashimi and sushi menu with miso soup and sweet potato for about $18! Good service and good location next to the queen victoria building.
10/10 - It is what it is, a cheap and delicious eat.
An intimate setting with greetings upon arrival from friendly staff.
The sashimi was pretty good, by the standard for what you pay. As was the beef (number 46 or 49).
A major perk was the quick service and attentive staff who cleaned my table between each meal and provided fresh chop sticks.
I'm glad I chose Nazimi while down here on work for a quick bite. You can't go wrong.
Delicious, delicious, delicious. Everything on their menu is tasty and it's very reasonably priced. The only down side is it is a very small restaurant so you feel very crammed, and there is usually a line, but they take bookings!
By far the best authentic Japanese restaurant in Sydney! I loved the cosy atmosphere which is reminiscent of the dining bars in Osaka and Kyoto, in a very traditional setting. The inclusion of Sake and Japanese speaking staff also added to the authentic feel of the restaurant. For a family, this feed was modest, however it should be noted that the quality was outstanding.
Friend recommended nazimi. A great restaurant. My girlfriend and I ordered one October special and it's worth it. Bento was also delicious compared to others.
A little bit pricey but totally worth it. The 52$ sashimi and sushi combo is so fresh but so small huhu feeling delicious and hurt my wallet at the same time haaha. Small place and very good service. Definitely will come back soon
I used to do giant takeaway bento boxes from Nazimi so I am a big fan of this place. Its small, cozy and tables are packed so close you can hear the conversation on the next table. If that still doesn't deter you, you're in for some decent fare.
We had the sashimi salad, fresh and refreshing with kingfish and salmon sashimi. Soft shell crab tacos were very crispy, so much that I could hear the crunch as I bit into it. Gyozas were nicely seared, cooked to perfection with a little bit of soupy moisture with each bite. Aburi sushi was nicely seared and not overcooked. I am also a super big fan of the kaarage chicken here.
There's something for everyone on the menu. This place is an oldie but a goodie. Affordable japanese right in the middle of the city.
Was recommended to go here and so glad we went. Little underground hidden place and the staff were so great! Can't wait to go back and try more
I absolutely loved this Japanese restaurant !!
It's in a great location, right behind the QVB building, and is a cute underground restaurant. All the staff were so helpful and friendly, and even got to go through the kitchen. The ingredients were so fresh and great quality, and dishes were presented really well. All so tasty!!!!
We loved it !! And can't wait to go back.
Thanks Nazimi
Very easy to miss this place, unless you were actively searching. Venture down the steps into a small but cosy Jap restaurant with warm greetings from the staff in Japanese. Good for those small gatherings with friends of less than 10. Been there multiple times.
The sushi is definitely recommended, and it's a bit higher end in terms of uni student budgets, but definitely worth it for those special occasions like birthdays! Key recommendation would be the spider roll for $18. Definitely a must try near QVB!
I absolutely love Japanese cuisine. I recently back-packed all around Japan and had the opportunity to sample so much local and fresh food. There's also the passion and discipline they inhibit towards cooking that's highly respectable. So when I find a restaurant in Sydney they brings in these same values, I'm all over it.
"Cozy" is definitely how I'd describe the place. Small and intimate, but the staff make it welcoming enough to be ignored. You need to walk through the kitchen in order to get to the bathroom, which is a bit of a squeeze, but it gave me chance to see what kind of environment the chefs work in. A bit messy, but not grubby, and considering the amount of space they work in, it's forgivable.
The food is fantastic. Everything is fresh and well-presented, with a great balance of flavours and textures. I got the soft shell crab roll and takoyaki, and to me, if you get takoyaki right then you're in my books. Price-wise, it's quite fair for the portions they give.
This is one place I'll happily visit again.

Such a cute little underground Japanese restaurant. I love this place for a decent Japanese meal in the CBD that won't break the bank.
The menu is very extensive and has a variety of cold and hot dishes to suit everyone. I love ordering the the kingfish carpaccio and the beef tataki. You can go...
The food is nice. At the beginning, we wait too long. But one of the waitress recognized that and sent a plate of edamame for us as apologize. So we were so appreciated for that. The food is delicious! However, the circumstance is little bit noise... Every customer try to speak louder and louder... But overall is good and nice place.
It's been so long since my last visit to this little Japanese restaurant in Town Hall. Still very good. I felt that I was still in Japan while enjoying the nice dinner. Food is fresh and in huge serving, while the service was great! It's a cosy little restaurant that you can go to when you need to find a pot to catch up with friends.
My friend and I came here for lunch today and we both found the food to be fresh and good value for money. We both ordered the sushi and sashimi combo which was only $19.
As we were early, it was empty so we were able to catch up freely as the tables are quite close together so once it started to fill up, it can make the conversation a bit awkward but we were ready to leave by then.
Nice cozy Japanese restaurant with a good variety of options, food was very fresh with a reasonable price. Would come back here again especially for lunch.
Food was very fresh but portions was small. Price is quite high worth a try but not a restaurant i want to keep going back to. Service is very good.
Its a great place for lunch, its a cozy environment to catch up with friends or colleagues. They have lots of combination for ur meal set and i had teriyaki salmon with sasumi.

Nazimi seemed to be the perfect indulgence on a Friday afternoon on the hottest day recorded in November since 1982.
The freshness of sashimi would definitely cool us down. I ordered the Volcano Roll and Sashimi Entree.
The sashimi was so amazingly fresh, the entree came with fresh tuna, salmon and king fish. Absolutely amazing. I love when I can bite into sashimi and fall inlove with Mother Nature all over again, fish is a wonderful delight, grilled or fresh.
The Volcano roll to be honest, could have been better, I always admire a volcano roll for its colourful presentation, but they had covered the roll in these crumbs, which took away my excitement. It wasn't as easy to eat either, it kept falling apart, but I will say this, the serving was large and once i managed to get it in my mouth, the taste was lovely.
I dined with two people and all our food came out at different times, seeing as we were the first customers of the evening, it was a surprise and abit of a downer, one of us had to wait and watch the others eat.
However, despite that, I would still come back.
Japanese on a hot summers day is an easy choice. Fresh and light it makes for a great dinner with friends.
Rated 4 stars and craving Japanese we headed to nazimi. There at 5 on the dot we were the first customers. Greeted kindly and seated right away. Menus given and water placed on our table (awesome)
We ordered a variety of food. Salads. Sashimi. Bento box and sushi roll. Saki as well - 3 different kinds.
The food was nice not amazing. The sashimi was fresh and refreshing but the grilled chicken salad was disappointing. The chicken was chewy and oily. The roll was overwhelming! But expected but lacked flavour. The bento was however very nice and offered lots of options which was great if you wanted a bit of anything. Each saki was also very nice.
They lost us when each meal came out at different times preventing us from eating together. That was very annoying as I finished way before anyone else and had to sit there watching them eat.
All up it was $100 for 3 people. Would rush back anytime soon but still had a good foodie experience.
Very busy place. Food was delicious but quantity was little and pricy for the regular assorted sashimi and wagyu steak. Great fresh quality seafood. We also had fresh oysters and some seared scallops both were also fantastic
A worthwhile recommendation by a friend. Cozy spot that's often busy at dinner. Fish is fresh and food's fairly good value for your money. Love the tempura, sashimi and karaage here.
My friend Jerry did me a real solid with some technical advice so I took him, Anny and Mel out for dinner as a thank you!. Unfortunately I forgot to take photos of the outside and decor of Nazimi! I always seem to focus on the food and forget about the rest. Nazimi is a little hard to find, it’s on York Street next to the QVB, tucked away downstairs in a little alcove, it’s a real hidden gem of Sydney.
When we walked into the restaurant the place was totally packed. The restaurant is rather small but cozy inside. The friendly waitress made the last table to seat near the counter. After reading so many positive reviews I was very excited to try out their food. The menu had a lot of creative and authentic Japanese dishes that you don't really find on your run of the mill Japanese Restaurants in Sydney. They brought us drinking waters and it was filtered which I was very happy about. We ordered Grilled cheese oysters and Tuna Tataki for entree which was both very nice. And for main, snapper hotpot and mixed Bento set. The Snapper hotpot had a very authentic Japanese flavor to it. Snapper, pipis and vegetables were cooked in perfection with very subtle flavor of broth which was like Japanese homemade fish soup. The Bento set was consisting with Teriyaki chicken, rice, sushi, sashimi and Miso soup. Miso and Teriyaki chicken was very nice well made with great taste. The only weakness is the sushi & sashimi - I have tasted better cuts and fresher pieces at other Japanese restaurants. If they fix that up there is nothing stopping them from getting a score of 5... All in all very pleasant dining experience, I am definitely coming back to try out more 'creative' dishes.
This is a cute little Japanese restaurant that everyone should know about. The teriyaki chicken was good. Would have preferred Kina Grannis over Clara C though.
On a wet Monday evening, Nazimi beckoned welcomingly, in its tiny cosy way. The staff were attentive, with my order for the veggie deluxe teishoku swiftly despatched to the kitchen. While I waited for my food to arrive there was plenty to look at, Nazimi being one of those quaint little resturants that almost feels like you have wandered into somebody's home, full of ornaments, pictures and even a shrine. My teishoku plate when it arrived was perfect Japanese comfort food. Miso soup, agedashi tofu, a really gorgeous soft marinated eggplant, different types of vegetarian sushi, rice and some unidentifiable entree of the day, tasty if unfamiliar. A very nice little Japanese.
Always love this place...ALWAYS
The service is high quality and inviting. Every dish we ordered was to expectation.
The atmosphere adds to the enjoyment.
The food is always fresh and desirable.
On one occasion, we arrived at 6 and stayed there 4 hours.
They have Asahi on tap...and great food.
Was here last week for a quick lunch, lucky wasn't busy time, very tiny place but with good atmosphere! Good service! Food is fresh and authentic, little bit pricy though.
Nice and Cozy Japanese restaurant
I've been to this place for several times and I always find the food is fresh and nice, also atmosphere is comfortable for the friendly wait-staff. We ordered Hotate butter yaki(scallop), creamy eggplant and some sashimi, we really enjoyed them. Highly recommended.
Good quality Japanese dishes. Can always count on this restaurant to deliver. Excellent food always. Great atmosphere. Volcano roll and aburi salmon rolls definite must try. Plum wine on the rocks to accompany ;)
The salmon aburi rolls were definitely a filling dish, they might not seem like much on the menu but the sheer number and size of the rolls proves otherwise. A delicious dish with nice smoky flavours.

Central CBD location, friendly and attentive service, casual and cosy vibe, great bang for bucks - this is the perfect place for any occasion (and best for a Friday pre-party food fix, but be sure to book in advance as they are generally busy on Fridays)! If you find the main dining area a little too crowdy and small, its not too bad an idea to try the outdoor dining area - the buses make it insanely noisy but that just means you can talk louder without annoying neighbouring diners! Whilst you're there, don't forget to make a trip to the restroom (you will never feel more welcomed to deal with your personal business as you walk through the kitchen and the crew to reach the ladies/mens).
The gyoza were quite good, thin-skinned and filled with juicy pork mince. The slightly tangy ponzu dipping sauce was a good accompaniment.
Hai all! Today, I'm gonna squish 3 small posts together D: You may have noticed that I did that for my last post as well. Since I have a hugeeeee backlog of posts waiting in the harddrive, I'm trying to declog and merging small posts into one. This will also benefit you, my precious reader, because you can experience 3 different foodgasms instead of one. Sounds cool? Then lets begin! So I started the day with lunch at Nazimi...which makes me chortle every time I think about it because of MissPiggy's post...*cough adult shop cough*. Nazimi Edamame $4.80 Boiled fresh green soybeans with a sprinkle of sea salt. Tempura Prawn $9.80 Deep fried king prawn served with handmade dashi sauce. The tempura came out a bright golden yellow and super crunchy with the prawns juicy inside. Agedashi Soft Shell Crab $9.80 Crispy soft shell crab with agedashi tofu. Awesome combination, especially when you want to eat both of them but can't fit two full serves in your stomach. Aburi Sushi $12.80 A selectio
Fantastic Japanese!. What a gem of a restaurant! Small and packed together, but the service was fast and the food was AMAZING!! We ordered green and oolong tea, seaweed salad, edamame, salmon udon, tempura udon, sushi regular (had 13 pieces!) - so so yummy!! Everything came out quickly, the sushi was fresh, the udon's were steaming hot - love it! What a find!
Chicken teriyaki is oh so yummy! Never thought chicken teriyaki can be this good.
The place, however, is tiny and fully packed with tables and chairs. But I bet you won't really mind once you get to taste the food.
Amazing vegetarian bento. Their vegetarian bento is amazing (~$22) even inspiring envy from my carnivorous friends. you get agedashi tofu, sweet miso eggplant, a selection of vegetarian sushi, a daily entree such as potato croquettes, edamame, salad, rice and miso soup. dessert used to be included as well but alas no longer. still a great variety and quality for vegetarians who sometimes get stuck with lesser options in japanese restaurants
It's this good that I kinda don't wanna share it with people because it is my secret food palace. It's a small restaurant so it will be hard to get a table when word spreads around:(
Volcano rolls, hmmm and the beef tataki, ohh and the thick cut super fresh sashimi, definitely my FAVOURITE!
A little hole-in-the-wall near Abbey's books, QVB & Town Hall. Worth the wait

Best value for money Japanese Cuisine. Tucked away downstairs, behind the QVB lies this little gem of a Japanese restaurant. After being introduced to it by a dear friend in 2009 I've bought every Tom Dick and Harry to have a taste! Tasty, well presented, homely style Japanese food with great flavour, Nazimi is a hit with everyone...even the fussiest of eaters. Fresh, clean, wholesome food, favourites are Nazimi dinner box, Beef Tataki, Sashimi salad and Volcano roll. Go on tuesdays and Wednesdays for a quieter dinner with more attention to detail on the food.
Loved it. We had pork dumpl.... Loved it.
We had pork dumplings and sashimi for the entree, a salmon and prawn sushi roll and the beef and seafood hot pot.
The presentation was beautiful on the sashimi and the sushi and both were delicious. A word of warning, the hot pot is massive!
Great Japanese cuisine at good prices, highly recommended.
Good value standard Japanese dishes cooked by Japanese chefs. Their sashimi and sushi have been fresher but their hot food is done well and pretty generous! The kingfish carpaccio was a little disappointing (really thin, small slivers of fish that resembled more of the size of sardines) but their sushi rolls were yummy! (Aburi salmon & king prawn sun monblang sushi rolls). Good CBD Japanese eatery and will come back if in the vicinity.
Ichi ban. Amazing food and outstanding staff. they deserve an applause for their composure during busy hours.
Love this restaurant!!!! My favourite!!!! Very authentic Japanese food! Highly recommended
One of the best Jap in CBD. My favorite dish is has to be creamy eggplant with prawn and scallop, two huge pieces on one plate. soooo yummy!
Butter scallop is good also. Softshell crab salad, however too oily.
Tried nearly everything on the menu and loved it all! Crab coquettes, tofu, udon soup and spider rolls are my stand outs
I love the sushi rolls here - especially the salmon & avocado roll. The beef tataki & pork belly is also pretty awesome. The staff are all fantastic aswell.
The bento boxes are easily the best in Sydney city....simply fantastic....quite a hidden gem
Excellent service and a cosy atmosphere. Food is excellent, especially the sushi rolls and it is not expensive
Good find, behind the QVB
Feels like a family run place with friendly service and a good selection of delicious food.
It’s an unassuming place but packed with goodness and reminds me a lot of restaurants in Japan. Everyone should find something to their liking. The chef’s selection of sushi was fresh and delicious. The vegetable tempura was light and crispy.
I’ll certainly be back
Small, quaint Japanese restaurant that I stumbled across. The vibe feels very cosy and the food we ordered was really delicious. It is a bit on the pricier side, but was impressed with the quality of the salmon.
Lovely little lower-ground restaurant for a cosy and casual night out. Being located in a more quiet street of the CBD, it doesn't have a very noticeable presence but this place is still deserving to be pocketed into someone's repertoire of Sydney's Japanese restaurant gems.
What really helped was their easily accessible and clear menu on their website that made it easy for us to decide what to get before stepping in. For their dinner mains menu it would be more convenient if they had an option to make it into a meal (e.g. + miso soup, + rice, + option of side).
I appreciate their attention to flavour in their dishes being well balanced and satisfying. Props to the chef who made the nasubi tofu yaki because the eggplant was grilled to softness in a subtle melt-in-your mouth way and well complemented with the fried tofu. 🍚
My favourite Japanese Restaurant in Sydney. Small restaurant serving delicious Japanese Food. I been here 4 times in the last 3 months and everything has been delicious 😋
Last visit in April 2022 I had the pork gyoza, takoyaki, and Agedashi Tofu. Yum yum yum 😋
Last review:
Awesome Japanese restaurant in the heart of Sydney city centre, just across from QVB Building, just minutes walk from Town Hall Train Station.
Just a small restaurant with 30 seats, reminds me so much of restaurants in Tokyo.
Great traditional Japanese food served by friendly Japanese staff and reasonable prices for a restaurant in the city.
I had some fresh, tasty sashimi and delicious yakitori chicken Skewers.
Good place for dinner, food was great, the carpaccio tasted very fishy on the other hand - not the freshest whilst the sashimi was great, wasn’t sure what happened to the salmon carpaccio. Price is a little on the expensive side.
Excellent service, very welcoming and accomodating (called us when a table became available on a busy Friday night!) and absolutely delicious food. Every dish coming from the kitchen was fantastic. A gem in the CBD.
Habachi grill waygu steak with Umami enhanced dipping sauce that brings out more flavour from the special charcoal they used. Make no mistake, this is amazing.
If you want to up your habachi grill technique in Sydney. Try this steak.
I can’t think of any other place that comes close to this perfection.
A few weeks ago we came here for our anniversary. To say Hana and the team at Nazimi was hospitable would be an understatement. I called a number of restaurants that apparently did omakase, and was met with disappointment due to staffing issues or seasonal influences. Hana however, said she will speak with the chef and see whether they could offer an exclusive omakase menu, however due to staffing restraints she was uncertain. Nonetheless she emailed and messaged me as promised, to show me the menu, which involved ongoing thought and care from the chef. In the end, we were treated with a delightful dinner, with candles on a complimentary dessert to give the meal an even sweeter end.
Appreciate all you and your team have done for us Hana, hope you guys are doing well and all the best!
