Review Taste Of Shanghai - Sydney

YuWan鱼丸
Have bought their frozen food from online grocery stores and really liked them. This was our first time dining in. The soup dumplings were good! But the veggies, beef and rice cakes were way too oily and greasy…
Damian Peh
Fantastic tasting food! The pork buns are a must try! Over flowing with sweet savory meat juices that leave you wanting for more! Quick and efficient service! Be sure to arrive early before the peak meal times!

Two different kinds of dumplings and a beer. Service was a bit confused but the food was good which was the main reason for dropping in. This still feels like the best food of all the restaurants in the chain...
Jimmy Gunawan
price wise was a bit medium price, slightly expensive. I tried the dumpling and noodle with beef. similar to Din Tai Fung. I guess it's okay if no other choice.

Very wonderful customer service. Food is seriously really good their dumplings are delicious. I also recommend the wok fried beef really succulent. Had the phattest feed ever and reasonably priced will be coming again in the future.

Taste of Shanghai is probably my favourite place to get dumplings in the CBD. The xiaolongbao (SOUP DUMPLINGS) are so good here.
Jeff Sereno
Some of the best Chinese food you can buy. Real quality taste, everything oozes of quality both visually and on your taste buds. We kept it simple with some vegetarian dumplings and pork and chives dumplings along with chicken fried rice with XO sauce. For the entree we got shallot onion pancake. Honestly, I could eat the rice and the dumplings all day long. The chilli in oil provided was high quality too. Just the right amount of heat while providing a lot of taste when mixed with soy. Staff were far and friendly and all were COVID-safe. Will definitely be back!

Food is great! But not outstanding.

Must try their dumplings, juicy and delicious.
Friendly service and reasonably price

Love this franchise for Dumplings! One of the best if not the best in Sydney.

I ordered Mongolian beef and some steamed vegetables. I wanted something simple. OMG! That was delicious!
The beef was moist and tender, not over chilli.
Loved it!

Great Chinese food (though only some of it is from Shanghai)

Membership programme where you can get discounts by joining and spending $100 before the end of the calendar year.

A taste of shanghai. This restaurant offers nice Shanghai style cuisine. If you're crazy about Xiaolongbao or Pork bun, it is the right place to go.

[Sliced Pork Shank in Garlic Sauce] $9.8
A cold dish like entree. Pork is sliced into very thin cuts. Very price worthy.

[Shanghai Pork Chop With roasted Scallions noodle soup] $12.8
Very traditional and famous Shanghai dish. I do like it. Ideal for lunch.

[Vegetarian Casserole] $18.8
A little bit expensive. The vegetables tastes oily.

They also make green dumpling in April, which is a seasonal traditional snack in China.

Food is absolutely delicious and service is fast. I’d recommend the braised pork with quail eggs and the salt and pepper tofu. One thing I will note is that staff only spoke in mandarin to us even though most of us were English speaking. It made it a little awkward and difficult to communicate.

If you'd like to read more of my reviews, please check out my Zomato page and visit @cynthiaeats_ on Instagram for more photos!

Really good shanghai restaurant with value prices and large portions. Service is fast (waiters are mostly chinese but can converse in basic english) with dumplings made and steamed fresh - kitchen can be seen from seating area. Beef fried noodles and mongolian beef were also great. Restaurant is located underground in world square

Ordered the sweet sour pork, Xiao Long Bao and veggie soup noodles. My favourite would be the pork dish, everything else was satisfying but nothing was above average.

A great place for Chinese casual dining. Although the cuisine is limited to its famous dumplings, it is a gateway to Shanghai style dishes.

If you want to try the best dumplings, this is the restaurant to begin with. A fast and reliable dining experience!

I recommend ordering the steamed pork dumplings, pan fried dumplings and wonton dumplings! Don’t forget order some stir fry vegetables/noodles!

Enjoy! 🎊

Staff are very polite. Best xiao long Bao I’ve ever tried, very juicy. Cheap food in Sydney. Didn’t have to wait for food. Staff constantly refilled water for us

Taste of Shanghai is a popular Chinese restaurant franchise that specialises in Shanghainese food. It’s always been a pleasure to dine at the restaurant, the food tastes great.

Good shanghainese food in world square. Large variety of plates to share. Fresh and tasty. Quick service. Recommend for casual lunch. Reasonable prices. Would visit again happily.

Been here a few times. Great selection and always great food. Would recommend the pan fried pork buns (last pic). Super yum. Good place to take groups of friends or colleagues. Always plenty of food.

one of the best xiao long baos ! the atmosphere is cute, service is good, and table placement is very nice. one of the only (inevitable) problems is the smell of vinegar that i cant stand AHAHA
the dumplings are great however the rice wasn't seasoned well, it was just chilli, no flavour which was disappointing

Had a good meal in Taste of Shanghai. Food came very fast and service is prompt and friendly. I love their nice big portions. I ordered a lot of their dumplings and they tasted good. Not 'woah' but good enough that I will come back. I quite like their sweet and sour pork ribs and mapo tofu as well. I recommend this place.

The taste of Shanghai

I had a great time dining in this restaurant, there was a drawbacks that's why it's not a 5/5. The food was awesome, it was delicious, affordable and they gave a lot of effort making sure that it was presentable.

We ordered a lot of food but didn't get a chance to took all the pictures. I would recommend the Xai longbao and the pork belly. The staff we're friendly but I wished they could explain their menu and recommend the food. The menu was pretty big, around 30 - 40 dishes including entrèe and desserts. We didn't get a chance to get desserts because we didn't want to be greedy.

Overall I had a great dinner, it was really affordable and would recommend to eat there again.
William
Not clean and not the best. Took their takeaways once and the service and wait was horrible. Would choose other shanghainese restaurants over this one

This is my favourite spot for delicious and reasonably priced Chinese food. My favourite are the Xiao Long Bao/pork soup dumplings, pan fried pork buns and sticky rice dim sum. I also like the stir fried noodles with shredded pork and vegetables and the Shanghai turnip croissants. The restaurant itself can feel a bit cramped but the food is worth it and the service is fast and efficient.

The service is pretty bad here, it wasn't that busy when I came to eat but it was hard getting the attention of the waitresses. The food is alright here, pretty average. The prices are alright too, just the service wasn't that great.

Walking past each weekend on our way to do our groceries at Coles, we had never been moved to try ‘Taste of Shanghai’ largely due to the ever-present long lines waiting for a table during peak periods. However after seeing the same long lines for several years, we just had to try it for ourselves to see what the hype was all about. Planning in advance to have a late lunch, we were greeted by polite serving staff and quite quickly shown to a table in between two families (thank goodness the ipad pacifier family was another table down!)
Once seated, we were given a glossy menu to self-check our orders. Honestly there were too many choices to choose from, we didn’t really know where to start. We discussed pros and cons of just going all sides and dumpling dishes, but settled on the opposite, placing a check next to 2 mains, a wonton dish and a drink, i.e. Shanghai style smoked fish noodle soup (Exhibit A); wontons in red chilli oil (10 pieces); stir fried rice cakes with shredded pork in wild greens; and a milk tea. And although it was almost 2pm by the time we placed our orders, the food came out quite quickly and piping hot! But in the brief wait time, I assessed their table settings and décor- scoring a 2 star on the napkin test, and the ambience was quite nice with low lighting and distressed wall finishes.

My first impression of the noodle soup was that it was bland and tasteless. However after taking a bite of the smoked fish (which was actually quite sweet and flavoursome) and then coming back to the soup and noodles, due to the sweet and savoury contrast, all of a sudden I was able to taste more of the suttle flavours in the soup.

The wontons (Exhibit B) were the highlight for us, they were well sized (more than a mouthful), tasty, and the wonton wrapper was nice and chewy (think perfectly cooked al dente pasta). Although what let down the dish was the chilli oil, as it didn’t have the spicy hot kick to it which we’d expected.

The biggest let down was the stir fried rice cakes, as the serving was generous but the shredded pork and veg was very sparse (Exhibit C), and again quite bland and unremarkable, not to mention quite a lot of effort of chewing was required to break down the rice cakes.

However after trying dishes 1-3, and then going back in reverse order, due to the various flavours which had accumulated on my tastebuds, on the second try all dishes tasted a little bit different from the first round and that was a nice surprise. The sweet milk tea also added to the meal, acting as a contrasting flavour thus intensifying the savoury taste when you came back to the food.
Our overall impression was positive, the food was fresh and satisfying enough, and portions were fair and well-priced. And from the amount of mandarin speaking patrons seated around us, it suggested that for them, it tasted enough of Shanghai! And the Mando-pop playlist playing over the PA took me back to memory lane when I was a much younger guy in the late 90s when I was into Canto and Mando-pop, so for that reason alone it was a positive experience.
Although our first Taste of Shanghai was a little bland, we definitely will be back to try more, next time we’ll come with more people so we’ll get to try more tastes of Shanghai!

Sydney's dumpling scene ranges from home-made mom-and-pop shops to established businesses like Taste of Shanghai. Unfortunately they didn't scratch the itch for us this time.

Shrimp & chive dumplings were the best of the bunch 👌, the filling was soft and fill of chives flavour. Skin was crystal clear and not doughy.
Xiao long bao was disappointing 😶 with such thick skin. There was not enough fat in the filling so the meat was rather dry although I didn't mind the soup.
Wonton in red chilli sauce wasn't too spicy and flavour of sauce was lovely 🌶. The dumplings' skin although was smooth, it was thick and again, needed more fat in filling to be juicy.

There was not much of an initial chilli kick in kou shui ji's sauce 🐥 but it developed as you ate. The sauce was thick with lots of sesame paste but veered on the sweet side.

It's not often that we were pleasantly surprised by a franchise such as Din Tai Fung or Paradise Dynasty but also in many instances we were let down, and this was unfortunately the latter.

Taste of Shanghai, how do I missed this place for the review?
Anyway... the Shanghai style an fried dumpling was tasty and delicious!
The soup inside the dumpling was flavour some!
The salt and pepper pork ribs was awesome too, can’t stop eating those bite size pork ribs.
It was an awesome lunch experience.
Aimee.
This place is always full and packed with people out the door. I can see that it’s a very convenient location for corporate workers to go to. The atmosphere is bustling and clean. The actual food is average. I ordered the salt and pepper tofu with some garlic greens. The portions were average and the taste was almost bland. We did get a takeaway order so many that’s why.

There were a lot of people waiting when we went to the restaurant on a Friday night. It took about 30mins to get a table for two ( it took longer if you don’t want to sit at a shared table)
We ordered the signature crispy pork soup bun, fish with chilli oil, braised pork belly, crispy bun with condensed milk sauce, and iced milk tea.
The food was very delicious - I especially liked the mini crispy buns with condensed milk.
The staff were also very friendly and attentive.

Back right after the redone. Feels more like HongKong. The food is great and really brings the memories back. Remember to join the vip before getting the bills.

Love the pork ribs in sweet vinegar, perfectly yummy with steam rice. The bun and veggies are also good. The soup taste is quite light for me, but overall good place!
Tara Nath
Came here with some work colleagues for lunch and overall, the experience was pleasant! My favourite were the steamed vegetarian dumplings. Probably a good idea to book a table as it gets quite busy during lunch time.

Oh Taste of Shanghai... you have redeemed yourself! I used to love coming here a few years back but the food quality and portion sizes started dropping when they got really popular. I felt like eating some Szechuan food but ended up stumbling back to this restaurant out of randomness. Reluctant to give it another try, I was really surprised at what was served. Delicious Shanghainese food! One of my fave side dishes of theirs is the braised bamboo shoot... I was disappointed to find out they ran out of stock!! (Not surprised though - it is a treat!) This time round, we ordered:
- radish buns: crispy flakey outside with some radish prawn pork mix inside. I usually don’t eat meat but did not want this to go to waste. This was pretty nice but I wish there was more filling than bun! Ratio was a little off.
- pan fried pork buns: my partner ate these and according to him - they were great. Nice and juicy inside and pipping hot! The last time we came these seemed premade (came out really quickly and only had warm juice inside) so he was really pleased with this batch.
- mushroom chilli pot: one of my favourite dishes here! Yum!! If you love mushrooms this is delicious. I highly recommend ordering this one. It seems like they’ve gotten generous with their portions again (much more than the last time I came!)
- fish in chilli oil: since I felt like Szechuan food I thought I’d give this one a go. The fish texture was great, nicely cooked and really tender. However, it definitely was not spicy (at all) and didn’t have any of those Szechuan peppers that I hoped it would have. (Silly me for ordering this at a Shanghai restaurant!) Was still nice to eat though.
- chicken fried rice: This was also quite yummy! Each ingredient gave good flavour too this fried rice. They definitely didn’t add much salt but the ingredients brought that to the dish. I was impressed. I also liked that the rice texture was more firmer compared to that mushy stuff you usually get at Cantonese restaurants.
- seafood vermicelli hot pot: yummy this was great too! I love vermicelli and these guys know how to cook it right. Great flavour!
- braised pork belly and quail egg: my partner had this one and he really liked it. Pork belly melted in his mouth and the eggs complemented this greatly.
Overall, I had a delightful experience here. Taste of Shanghai’s quality has definitely improved and relative to other restaurants you can go to in the city, it charges relatively competitive prices. I will definitely be back.
Rachael
Good price, prompt service, hot food, delicious texture and flavour... I loved these dumplings!
Just take the escalator down to the lower ground level of world square. The menu is a bit lengthy but the just means there is all the more to try. Maybe come with more friends to share and try more food!
Dominic Svensson
I went on recommendations from Chinese people that this was very typical of what they ate back home. It was ok, the beef and the pak choy had both been cooked to a good texture without being greasy, but the Szechuan beef didn’t seem to have much chilli or flavour cooked into it and the pak choy could have done with garlic or anything really. The big problem is the price with most mains over $20 - they’re not huge but I guess they're big enough that a group could share a few dishes. Staff are good except that the cashier takes ages and the payment area is cramped.

1. Spring Beas sprout with mushroom is excellent, healthy. Veggie loves it.
2. Chicken in cold chilli 🌶 oil, cold appetiser, is one of my favourite! The favour is inside and authentic, far better than that of ‘Chef Gallery’.
3. Xiaolong Bao, one of the recommendation, is different from other meat in Bun, called Bao Zi in Chinese. Beautiful soup is inside, you bite a little bit and the soup comes out, amazing!
Michelle Ouyang
A good for the price choice in the city. Most dishes are decently well prepared. They recently renewed their menu. The Sichuan Fried Chicken was okay, but I think it is a bad decision to put capsicums in it. It will make the chicken pieces less crispy if not eaten straight away. Their crab was good but not always available.
Wennie Yan
I’m native shanghainese. I’d say the food there is very authentic, partially. The other part are not really shanghai food, but different famous dishes/cuisines in China. They mixed them together for customers to enjoy a better combination of Chinese food. Good taste, well presented, but not cheap actually. Good place to share with friends or show non Chinese friends the real Chinese food.
Andy Quan
Somehow I manage to go by all the better-lit restaurants on the ground level and end up in the basement of World Square. I definitely ate in the corner restaurant before… but it was before Taste of Shanghai. I find something fun and inviting about the set-up. Apparently, it’s a chain and there are six in Sydney.

.
🍽️Stir fried snow peas sprout with mushroom🍽️
Very delicious stir-fried veggie. I always order a dish of veggie whenever I eat out so that I can have a balanced diet. If you are like me, this is the veggie dish to order. However, do keep in mind that they only have a few pieces of mushroom and the snow peas can be hard to chew...

🍽️Wok fried sliced beef with spring onion🍽️
Another nice dish, the beef was very soft and tender. The taste was slightly salty though, must eat it with rice. Spring onion I didn't eat because I don't like.

🍽️ Pan fried pork bun🍽️
This is their signature dish and it really lives up to its reputation. The bun was crispy at the bottom and soft at the top, while the inside was filled with juicy pork fillings. A bite into this unique textured bun and let the soupy juice flow through your mouth, so yum! But be careful, the soup inside can be very hot.

🍽️Beef and bean sprout stir-fried rice noodle 🍽️
First taste was yum but afterwards it became oily and slightly puckery.

✏️Note: very authentic Chinese food

We ordered soup dumplings, pan fried buns, and spicy cold chicken. All the food including temperature, flavour, texture was perfect. Price is reasonable for location and execution. The staff was okay, I had to get up and get my own water and some of the staff looked so angry or sad it was really not nice.
Stella
The salted duck and the braised bamboo shoot are really authentic. The duck is a little bit fat but I like it. The bamboo shoot is a sweet and I like Lisa lot. The braised pork belly is not sweet enough. Over all, quite good Shanghai cuisine!
Andy Trieu
There was something off about the dumplings we had today but they are generally quite good. If you are craving for noodle soup I would say this is not the place. They are convenient and consistent with their other dishes though especially the pork cracklings and pan fried pork buns! I've had a lot more positive experiences here than negative!
The Miniature Life
I had been meaning to try Taste of Shanghai for quite sometime, particularly after seeing the menu! Better still, it's a recommended dumpling restaurant, which made it a must-do in terms of dumplings here in Sydney. We only waited a couple of minutes before we were seated, though we did have to share a large round table with another group of customers. It wasn't a problem as such, though they got a nice jug of water, and we got a bottle of water... and the bottle looked were low quality, old and over-used. Just saying.

Trying out this famous Chinese restaurant below World Square. I went there on Saturday night and it was fully packed! I have to wait for about 30 minutes to be seated. Braised Pork Belly Slices with Preserved Veg - $26.44. The pork belly was really tender and soft as it can be easily separated by fork easily. The sauce was a thick sauce, seems like a barbecue sauce as it was sweet and savory. The veges was cooked beautifully as well.

Before I came, I have a high expectation to this restaurant. But when I sit down, I saw their tableware is dirty. I guess they did not wash their dishes very carefully. The bowl and the spoon I used still have some unknown dark dot, which can be easily removed by tissue.

The poached chicken in Chinese wine is horrible. That is the most disgusting chicken I have ever try. However, I still persuade myself to eat all of them. When I ate half of them, I almost vomit and had to stop. Even their popular steam buns is not that good.

Additionally, the customer service is bad! On the top of the menu, there are two different prices. I thought it is the difference between middle one and large one. I misunderstood, it is my fault. But when I order, I confirmed with the waitress that I want the middle one. She did not say anything. Then, I can't eat all of the chicken because it almost make me vomit. The waitress gave me a take away box without telling me that the box is charged for 30cent.

More over, because I came along. I ate very quick. (Within ten minutes). As soon as I finished, the waitess seems can't wait to clean my table without saying sorry. But I still want to have a rest for a couple minutes. So I ignore their rude attitude and still sit there. More ridiculous thing happened. One of their waitress stand behind my chair. That place is not suppose to stand a people.

To summarize, the price is high, the service is rude and the food is disgusting. 🙂Today is my first day and first food travelling in Sydney and this restaurant successfully damage it.🙃

Taste of Shanghai is our go to place for some authentic and convenient Shanghainese food. Being located in many central business areas, this chain delivers consistent food among all stores and somewhat good service. Although be sure to note that whenever you are going to one of these stores during lunch hour/dinner time, there will be a bit of a wait. We recommend getting the pan fried pork buns ($12), special spicy fried rice ($15.33) and the peking style shredded pork with pancakes ($20.88)!
Eric Cheng
One of my favorite Shanghai Restaurants in Sydney. Was never disappointed by their dishes, which were all very authentic. The place is a little crowded and service can be bad during peak hours, but its all about the food right?
Bigeaterintown
Food was ok. It's not very standing out when comparing to new Shanghai. But they are both nice. The light here is a bit dark and it's not my first choice but other customers may like it. Milk tea is very nice here.
Richie Simm
We always have a great time here for dinner, great variety of dumplings and the sweet and sour fish is amazing the price is very reasonable as well
Pam
My friend took me here and it was my first authentic xiao long bao experience. The place was pretty fancy with the visible appearance of the chief preparing behind the glass. We ordered the two most popular dishes. 001 Pan fried pork buns ($12) and 003 Xiao long bao ($12). We were hungry and the two dishes surprisingly filled us up. I did enjoy the meal, however it was quite pricey.
Anna
We weren't expecting a line at lunch (guess we completely underestimated this place) but there was a slight wait at 1pm. It moved quickly so it was okay. The space is larger than I had imagined so I suppose it can accommodate a relatively large amount of people at peak times.

Although we took our time ordering, the food came out very quickly so it helped us save some time. We got the shrimp & chive dumplings, veg hot pot, and cucumber entree. For dinner it's probably okay, but it wasn't a very cheap lunch. Especially as this was not enough for two people. The veg hot pot was particularly pricey in our opinion, but definitely tasty. And the dumplings were SO good, you must try the shrimp & chive ones if you get the chance. Really nice! 😋
Chi
The thing that keeps me coming back here is the consistency. If i wanted an above average tasting meal, Taste of Shanghai is where I would be. The food selection is not really limited to Shanghainese, I see cantonese/sichuan dishes on the menu too.
The chilli oil dumplings is the best I've tasted so far in Australia.
The down side is that I feel pricing is $4 more expensive than what each dish is.
Note: on the menu there are 2 prices, one for members and one for non-members, suggest fellow diners to plan ahead and get the membership.
Frenchy Foodie
Very good authentic Shanghai style food. Great taste and very affordable . Avoid the 12-1pm lunchtime rush hour if you don't like waiting. My pick is the Dumplings soup Xiao Long Bao. 6 dumplings at $12, you cannot go wrong. Been there 4 time and yet to get a bad meal. Great Chinese in the CBD
FOOD TRIP
Taste of Shanghai is one of my must visit places in Sydney. They serve up all the traditional Shanghai style dishes that I love and they do it very well. The place is usually very busy during meal times, so prepare for a wait. Food here is delicious and satisfying. Would definitely recommend. Packed during a weekday lunch
WDD
From my experience the same dishes at the Hurstville Taste of Shanghai are tastier, especially if you like your sheng jian bao (pan fried pork bun) on the crispier side.
We also ordered deep fried milk dough, stir fried rice cakes with pork and cabbage, and beancurd soup - which were all fine, but I prefer the Hurstville Taste of Shang :p
Jade
Never disappoints. They make the best xiao long bao, full of yummy juices. I would rate their food better than Din Tai Fung, and at a lower price point. Everything is delicious there. Highly recommended if you want authentic shangainess food.
V
Yum! I haven't had this much dumplings .. ever! I enjoyed it and it was good for some different. The spicy beef with pancake was delicious and a good break from the dumplings. This place definitely encouraged me to explore dumplings more 😊
Hungry Panda
HUNGRY SUMMARY - amazing soup dumplings but comes at a hefty price

FOOD - order a steamer of 8 soup dumplings (xiaolong bao). The baos were amazing, the skin was thin and sticky (like it should be), the meat filling was tasty and the soup inside was fresh. The bao is also well made.

PRICE - $12.00 - a bit pricey for 8 baos

SERVICE/ENVIRONMENT - good restaurant and good location but does not take EFTPOS (below $30 orders) - Points taken from there
Kristel S
One of the best places I have had xiao long baos. However, service was average. On several occasions there was a long wait for food. I came in with friends and our food came out at significantly different times.
Shadz
Good place for dumplings, and beers. The service needs some improving. The place had some very rude staff who did not care about the needs of their customers. Lucky the dumplings were worth the pain..
Rachel O'Neill
Very fresh and excellent quality. It's clearly a place that has great food using the freshest of ingredients. Some of the best won tons I have ever had.

From scale (1 - 5)
Food & Bev (4,5 / 5)
Service (3 / 5)
Ambience (4 / 5)
Value (4 / 5)

My to go place when I missed an authentic Shanghai and Chinese cuisine, the ambience of the restaurant is very nice. xiao long bao and claypot braised porkbelly is my usual order here.

Jewel Eats
Authentic Shanghai and Chinese cuisine, set in a very 'heritage' old town setting in the restaurant, which is very nice. The crab sui long pau is my usual order here, as are the fried dumplings. Be early during lunch, as it gets very crowded around 1215pm onwards.

Taste of Shanghai is one of my favourite restaurants especially for Xiao Long Bao dumplings. They recently have a few new additions to the menu to satisfy those tastebuds.MW and I check out Taste of Shanghai in World Square along with other foodies to see what's new on the menu. Check out the black beef on waffles because

Dumpling ninja!!

Ooooofffft.... I felt like a dumpling walking out this place, this place is one of the few dumpling place i always return.

The Xiao long bao (Soup dumpling) and the pan fried dumpling are my favourites, burst with flavours and super hot soup. Mouth burning goodness.

I used to go to the Ashfield joint but since its inconveniently located in World Square i guess i will be visiting more often.

New menu is up for Summer ... Seafood, if you are into it.

Until next time .... Keep eating!!!

Willxia1. Princess_Porky. Phillip Xia Ningjaeats

I would consider us dumpling fiends and when we come a cross this joint at the night noodle markets we could not resist. The dumplings were pre cooked making for fast edficient service. They had all of the sauce to accompany the dumplings, soy, vinegar, chilli sauce and sweet chilli, were only missing the chilli oil. We ordered the pan fried pork and chive dumplings which we devoured quick smart. This place will help you get that dumpling fix.
Henry
I visited Taste of Shanghai many times in Eastwood, and first visit in CBD. Their sweet sour pork is my favourite dish and their fried dumplings good too. This time I ordered fried fish too, but my friends and I couldn't finished as it was bit fishy.
Mangomango
Quite busy in the center of World square. Very slow and unpleasant service. Been waiting over 20 mins for food. Food are ok, but a little bit salty.
Excuse Me Waiter
Shanghainese dumplings have been going from strength to strength in Sydney and the well-established Taste of Shanghai chain is no exception – their cosy World Square store is a convenient spot to drop into if you have some xiao long bao cravings to satisfy. DIY Xiao Long Bao. Xiao Long Bao, $10.80

Excellent food at very reasonable prices. Don't go here for the service however. The language barrier is tricky if you have dietary requirements (one of our table was allergic to prawns).
Kelly Yeoh
Just had dinner here. Read the reviews about this place and had high expectations for the xiao long pau but it wasn't even that great. I've had better ones from so many other places.

Plus, we ordered fish fillet with chinese wine, it sucked real bad, tasted so bland and not even a single taste of the chinese wine.

The fried prawns with salted egg was equally bad with no salted egg yolk taste and it was so dry. And we had to pay $30+ for this plate of crap.

The worst part was that they can't even get their rice cooked right. A chinese restaurant that serves uncooked rice, such a disappointment.

In fact, its not just the food that is bad, the service is even worse. The waitress didn't even bother asking if we were done with our dishes and just dive right in to clear our plates when I was clearly still eating and there was still vegetable on the plate. Didn't even bother saying sorry after that.

This is by far one of the worst experience I've had with customer service in Australia. Would not recommend this restaurant.
Rosie Posie
Amazing Shanghaiese restaurant, tucked away under World Square. Great for big or small groups and perfect for post work dinner. The dumplings are a winner but also order the shallot pancakes and the eggplant and mince dish - I would almost come back for that dish alone! Lovely staff and nice atmosphere
Snapshots Of Food
We love Taste of Shanghai and you can tell it's quite obviously our top selection for Xiao Long Bao and Pan Fried Pork Buns - this will be our 4th post (excluding our late night takeaway orders from Hurstville), just to make sure you understand how serious we are about Taste of Shanghai. While we haven't been to Shanghai or China, we are sure that the taste is authentic because of the traditional techniques that are used to create these amazing signature dishes. You would want to visit Taste of Shanghai with family or friends to try as much as possible as we were privileged to try below. Before we begin our feast, we had the opportunity to learn from the experts in a DIY Dumpling Class.

The new renovated interior of Taste of Shanghai in World Square Sydney boasts an old tradition charm with its traditional Chinese decors and dark teak furnishings. An open viewing kitchen enclosed by clear glass windows invites diners to watch the dumpling masters expertly handmade each single dumplings.

I highly recommend the salt and pepper king prawns which were absolutely delicious. They were fried to golden perfection and topped with fried eschallots and chilli. They were moreish, addictive and the perfect comfort food on a cold night.

Everyone was raving about Taste of Shanghai's pan fried pork buns. Indeed, they were wonderfully flavoursome. The buns were lightly steamed and crispy fried at the bottom. The pastry was thicker than the xiao long bao and held more pork filling and broth within. A warning sticker was flagged to warn us to wait a few minutes for the pork buns to cool down to avoid burning our mouths.

The eggplant and pork mince was another delicious dish. The sweet chili vinegar was sticky, tasty and went well with the spicy fried rice. I also enjoyed the sir-fry green beans with pork mince ($16.80). It was simple, perfectly cooked and absolutely delectable. The beans tasted crunchy and so delightful.

Shanghainese food is absolutely delightful.

Food was great! Waiting time was particularly short. Xiao Long Bao was beautifully made with thin skin (highly desirable). Prices of the food acceptable. The bustling atmosphere was very warming. The setting had a vintage touch which gave a slight sense of Shanghai. The waiting staff were perceptive and attended to all our needs.

The only problem was the hygiene. Our table contained oil marks and the sauces container had sauce dripping all over it.

Other than that, definitely worth visiting to try Shanghainese food.

Handmade dumplings are the drawcards here, and after a brief dumpling making experience hosted by personable owner Aaron Mi, I tucked into my perfectly pleated Xiao Long Bao ($10.80/8 pieces) with renewed appreciation. Behind the bars and their masks, these ladies pleat, pinch and fold up an intimidating collection of dumplings, presented in a glossy, beautifully photographed magazine-style menu. Skip straight to the menu hits with Pan Fried Pork Buns ($10.80/8 pieces). They’re the ones that require the on-spoon hole punching to avoid being scalded with hot soup, which forms inside them from melting gelatin broth cubes.Pork Wonton in Hot Chilli ($10.80/10 pieces) impress too, offering up a good kick of chilli and fragrant Sichuan peppercorns. However if you’re less of a hot-fiend, green Shrimp and Chive Dumplings ($12.80/8 pieces) make for another palate pleasing selection. More than just a dumpling bar, Taste of Shanghai also excels in

Super convenient for me and these are up there my favourite dumplings in town! Taste of Shanghai is great for fast cheap eats :) Pork buns are also on point.

Been here a couple of times and our recent visit was quite disappointing.
The wonton in chilli oil and steamed pork bun with crab meat were rather average. The Pan Fried Noodles with Shrimp & Shredded Pork was not pan-fried, it was DEEP FRIED. It was so overly fried it was like eating crisps. And the quality and quantity of noodle topping was also rather pathetic. It’s nothing like the traditional 兩麵黃.
Will not be back.

It's located in the World Square, same floor as Coles. Very convenient and always busying.
I had Chilli Oil with Chicken and rice this time then sticky rice dumpling and fried ban with condence milk for taking away.
All together about $30. I felt a bit overpriced but maybe It's good to share with someone not coming by myself.
The serving was quite quick and food were tasty.
Staff were friendly and the store were nice and clean. I'd like to come back again soon.

Great dumplings and really tasty food in a buzzing atmosphere. I've tried many many Chinese restaurants around Sydney and this is my go-to Chinese restaurant. Love it!

I've eaten at a lot of Shanghainese restaurants across Sydney and Taste of Shanghai have the best pan fried pork buns and xiao long bao. It's great for a quick bite.

Have tried various Shanghai restaurants around Australia. Taste of Shanghai seems to be the one! Dumplings are perfectly cooked still with fresh juices! An absolute favourite!

We get overwhelmed by the amount of lunch options in the CBD and generally end up eating gross food court meals or dry sushi 😖 If you're looking for options that aren't the prior, we recommend Taste of Shanghai. Don't let the intense menu scare you away, this restaurant has something for everything and is a lot more approachable than first glance would have you think.

We don't claim have the most advanced palate when it comes to Asian cuisines and some dishes don't agree with us but everything we had here was definitely a winner.

This stir fried beef (original, we know) was made with some seriously tender meat and the drunken chicken we tried packed heaps of flavour.
#yourewelcome

delicious spicy fried rice, dumplings on point, fast and efficient service a friend we were dining with friend so we we're lucky to get a few sneaky extras. Their top 4 dishes are all worth trying and decent serves too.

We love taste of Shanghai at any outlet but this one seems to be one of the best. Dumplings are perfect and the pan fried buns are a must.
We also tried the noodles with beef brisket and omg amazing.
To be honest all dishes are great. Good service too

Madly in love with the dumplings, both steam and fried. Crispy base with a juicy filling. Hmm hmm. Other dishes were good too. May have to wait during peak hours.
Sir And Mlady Dine Out
Taste of Shanghai is in World Square Sydney. This area of Sydney is busy with an array of different shops. Taste of Shanghai is deceptively big - you walk in and turn to the right and it keeps going - you wouldn't know this from just standing outside. It is so spacious and you can also watch the talented chefs making their delicious food.

Sir and Mlady LOVE dumplings! The menu is so diverse and the variety that you can order is amazing. The Pan Fried Pork bun is a classic. It was lovely pork wrapped in a soft and fluffy hot roll. So Nice! Then we had the pork and chive dumplings - how tasty and soft were these! They are one of the most traditional dumpling types and we really enjoyed them.

The service here is okay. Can be a little brusque at times but that is typically Chinese style to get diners in and out as very busy here. We had the Pan Fried Pork Bun, Xiao Long Bao, Sticky Rice Din Sim, Steamed Vegetarian Dumplings, Chicken & Corn Dumplings, San Choy Bao as well as Beef & Bean Sprout Stir Fried Noodles. It all tasted very good. I also had a Citron Tea.

WHEELCHAIR ACCESS! GET OUT AND HAVE FUN! Cheap , tasty, easy to get to and very wheelchair accessible.

Situated on the ground floor of World Square, Taste of Shanghai CBD has straight roll-in access from Goulburn St. and lift access from Liverpool St. There are no steps to enter the restaurant and once in the restaurant it's entirely flat. Tables are well spaced, it's easy enough to get around.

World Square is easily accessible by wheelchair friendly public transport. It is 5 minutes rock n roll down George St. from Townhall train station, where there are multiple exits all equipped with wheelchair friendly lifts. Most bus routes that go from where you are to the city would likely to offer wheelchair accessible services and get you reasonably close to World Square shopping centre. If not sure, just jump on the transportNSW website to plan your trip beforehand and don’t forget to tick the 'Accessible services only' box.

Taste of Shanghai uses the World Square shopping centre's toilet facility and there's a big fully equipped accessible bathroom on the same floor just around the corner from the restaurant. In the unlikely situation this one is out of order, there's another accessible toilet on the floor above. You may have to ask for directions, good news is the security guards are usually easy to find, they are either roaming close by or you can follow the signs and find them at the security office on the same level as Taste of Shanghai.

Taste of Shanghai has all your favourite Chinese dishes cooked to perfection like Peking duck and oyster beef. It also offers authentic Shanghai specialties like crystal prawns and Chinese ham bamboo shoot soup that you wouldn't get from a generic suburban Chinese takeaway. The pan fried pork buns are to die for and the variety of dishes on offer will confuse anyone at first go.

If you have no idea what to order, no worries, as the menu is full of colourful pictures, just point and ask. All the waiters speak good enough English for their job and the services are friendly and professional. It’s not Michelin star service, but they are pleasant enough for a first date.

The place just had a facelift late last year, all their tableware is fully updated and restaurant redecorated. Food is still great, price still attractive. Together with easy wheelchair access, it is a solid 4/5 for me. Keep posted for more wheelchair accessible reviews!

Quite nice place. We actually had a return trip from North Sydney just for this to lunch with a small group. Waited for 20 mins. I was not confident that my friends gonna think it woth the time. But when the food came, they were really happy.
They even got me to recommend dishes for next time they visit here. Nice, the foodie good some trust :)
Having eaten at Westfield New Shanghai twice last month we were keen to go head-to-head with Taste of Shanghai in World Square.

Both are in shopping center basements, and New Shanghai (NS) wins for space, ambience & decor - Taste of Shanghai (ToS), although newly renovated, is cramped & stuck unglamorously between a $2 shop and lottery agent. The food's so good it's nearly always crowded with long lines, so yesterday we got takeaway.

- Pan-fried pork buns, awesome. Not much in it, both NS and ToS do delicious versions of these.

- Xiao Long Bao rankings. DTF is #1. ToS were OK & I might get them again, though I don't like that they charge extra for ginger. NS, wouldn't get these there.

- Shredded pork & green vegetable with bean curd soup - simple & comforting

- Stir fried cauliflower in hot wok - the surprise of the meal, this was seriously addictive if you like strong flavours, with really tasty oily brown sauce. (Warning vegetarians, it has thin slices of pork with it ). I'd happily eat it every night, though it's expensive at $18.80 (!) for a container of cauliflower! Compared to the pork buns which were $10.80 it's overpriced, which may not stop me wanting it again next time...

So the food from ToS was a pleasant surprise, & the staff were even vaguely friendly. Some interesting dishes on the menu, we're definitely coming back soon!

I don't believe in paying top dollar for Asian food. The abrupt service, fluorescent lights, noisy ambience are all part of the authenticity. You come here to get the most authentic Shanghainese cuisine and satisfy cravings for soup dumplings, steamed or pan fried. It delivers every time. I have been to this restaurant a dozen of times and never had a bad dish! They recently finished refurbishment and have an open plan dining area. It looks really good, can't wait to go back.
Let's Nomnom
I love dumplings, Mr. Nomnom loves dumplings, and I certainly believe everyone loves dumplings! There's no reason not to like this soul-satisfying comfort food and they're easily found anywhere you go around the world. Known as a large chain restaurant specializing in classic Shanghai style cuisine, Taste of Shanghai has just reopened their World Square store with a brand new look and it's not a surprise to see a long line of people outside waiting to be seated.
Insatiable Munchies
Ever eat so much that the meal was just a whirlwind and the evening was a blur because you've blacked out from a food coma?. I had that, when we were invited to celebrate the launch of Taste of Shanghai’s brand spanking new decor of their World Square outlet. Get ready for a deluge of food photos…
Snapshots Of Food
Taste of Shanghai has always been one of our favourite places to snack out on some pan fried pork buns, which you already probably know by now. Well, now we are able to do so in style, as the Taste of Shanghai store in World Square has re-opened with a brand new face lift! That's right... all the food you know and love remain, but the store now looks fantastic (with more seats too!)
Does My Bomb Look Big In This
The empire has landed in World Square, giving shoppers a step up from the usual food court fare. Here you can have a bottle of wine - the T'Gallant Juliet Pinot Grigio ($36/bottle, $7.50/glass) goes down swimmingly - and gorge on dumplings all day and night. The Xiao Long Bao ($9.80) are the famous soup dumplings – so delicious it’s hard to wait out the impending hot explosion of soup inside.
Insatiable Munchies
Dumpling frenzy is alive and well in Sydney, with every man and his dog attempting the iconic soup dumpling (xiao long bao) – little pastry wrapped parcels of engineering genius that explode with scalding hot soup the moment you bite into it. What can I say? We’re gluttons for punishment.

Taste of Shanghai is a very popular restaurant in the lower level of World Square, so popular that until tonight, the queues had always put me off. However, after being assured by another Zomato reviewer that this is the place to go for great shengjian bao (pan fried pork soup dumplings), I thought I had better brave it. There was a short queue when I arrived, with a wait of about 20 minutes for the table. Once seated the service was very efficient - they're obviously keen to turn over tables quickly. I ordered shengjian bao and new year rice cakes with pork and wild veggies. The shengjian bao were light and juicy, so juicy in fact that I ended up squirting soup all over myself and the table. Excellent. I recommend avoiding that if you can - the soup juices in the dumpling are extremely sticky :O My new year rice cakes had a good consistency - I love that chewy glutinous thing they have going on - but i found them a little bland. Easily fixed with some chill sauce. The food here is great and the restaurant is very buzzy - the clientele would be 95% Asian, always a good sign in a Chinese restaurant.
