Yachiyo Japanese Bistro, Darlinghurst🍛
First time visiting Yachiyo Japanese Bistro, located in Darlinghurst near King Cross Station.
Excellent choice of food, great umami and originality from each dish. The chef is Japanese origin knowing the proper technique & knowing how to serve each dish.
Their signature Scallop Gyoza is a must try!
The service is a bit slow due to small team, perfect place for dates, after work & family diner.
However at the end of the service the head chef gave me free dessert (crunchy matcha) as a apologize. Overall: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The food and service were both great. Really rate this place. The ambience was on point with a dimly lit cosy restaurant. We had everything from sushi to miso grilled pork. Highlights was the fresh tuna and salmon Toro, cauliflower bites and the rockmelon mochi.
Service was lovely, she was attentive and took care of us.
Overall great experience, will definitely be back.
This is my favourite place to have lunch because it is delicious and great value. My favourite dishes are the udon noodles with chicken katsu and the sushi and sashimi boat. Staff here are also lovely.
Never failed every time coming here, one of the best japanese restaurant around sydney. Go for their “me so hungry” option, the chef will cook you their favorite dishes & take sip on their sake
Their sashimi was so damn fresh that they had a hint of sweetness to them! The sushi boat was $23 dollars accompanied by agashi tofu, steamed egg and miso soup. Would definately recommend :)
Nice little joint at King's Cross, a bit hectic when it's full, it was so loud that we thought the special of the day was salad with sashimi but the fish was actually pan seared and the table next to us never got their spicy tuna roll until they asked the waitress and realised that she forgot to put it in the system. Flavour wise, some of the dishes can be a bit too salty, like the wasabi rice in beef tataki, and the broth for pork rib. I could be wrong as some would call it perfect seasoning but it was a bit too much for me.
I went to here with my friend at 20 o'clock 19th September.
We ate Sashimi, agedashidofu, edamame and scallop.
We also drunk sake.
It's really nice taste!!
Go to Japanese in the East. Delicious food, good atmosphere and near transport. The karage is particularly good and the agadashi tofu. Would recommend for friends, first dates etc. Good idea to book as gets busy.
Overall very pleasant casual dining experience. Run by Japanese there is a mix of traditional Japanese cuisine dishes like sushi, sashimi, tempura plus some fusion like scallop & mushroom risotto. They have the usual menu plus changing blackboard specials. Very wide variety of dishes! Their sushi & sashimi was very fresh and the sushi rice was perfect. Also had the yuzu marinated tuna which was a nice subtle and distinct flavour. Their miso & wasabi salmon popcorn was also fried perfectly with a great balance of seasoning. Their home made sushi soy sauce was nice and thick although a bit too sweet for my liking. Liked how the place was busy but not too packed and didn't make us have a fixed slot to dine (unlike a lot of other popular places), so it's perfect for a group of friends or a romantic date where you can slowly order and eat over wine, beer or sake. It's an authentic, cute little jap eatery. Highly recommend!
A new friend of mine suggested we go out to Sushi Yachiyo, having had good experiences there in the past. I haven't had a good Japanese meal in a while, so I eagerly jumped at the opportunity.
Though it is clearly a known commodity, my first impression was that it had a bit of a quaint, 'hole-in-the-wall' vibe. You could definitely imagine encountering this sort of place if you were to go wandering through the back alleys of a Japanese city! We arrived at 6:30pm with a booking, and were seated immediately. It quickly became very busy, so if you're planning on going, booking ahead would be wise! The service was fast and attentive throughout the evening (allowing for reasonable constraints as it became busier), and I can recommend the service aspect of the experience, overall.
The style of food served at Sushi Yachiyo focuses on small plates (essentially, tapas - Japanese style). In all honesty, we didn't even look at the menus, as we were content in ordering items from the large blackboard wall. In short, the food was excellent - especially the seafood. The tuna belly, salmon belly and carpaccio were incredibly fresh and tasty, and absolutely melted in your mouth! The scallop bowl was a crispy, salty delight, and heavily contrasted with the scallop sashimi, which was a bit more adventurous, but still delicious. The salmon skewers and pork belly were also both very good, if not quite as impressive as the dishes aforementioned. The chocolate dessert was somewhat of a novelty - though it looked like ice cream, it had a texture somewhere between a brownie and fudge. I personally found it very tasty, but if you're not a sweet-tooth, you might find it a bit sickly. Holistically, the food was of extremely high quality, and I couldn't recommend it highly enough.
The sake tasting experience was also highly enjoyable - ask the manager (owner?) and he will tell you that they have a few dozen sake varieties. He will pick three, give everyone at the table a small taste of each (out of a small shot glass), and then you can pick which one you prefer to have in a small jug. This was a really good way of trying quite a few different sake varieties (the two of us tried nine different sakes/shared three jugs between us)... a word for the wise, however - there is no such thing as a dessert sake - chocolate and sake are two flavours that were never meant to meet... but that's all on me!
Overall, if you're looking for tasty and authentic Japanese food, Sushi Yachiyo will effectively satiate your appetite.
I read a few reviews and most people were saying that it tastes like normal Japanese but with a big price tag. I agree, but also disagree. Yes, the taste is similar and the price is high. However, Sushi Yachiyo really puts on a show. Each dish is a work of art and is almost too good to eat. For that, it's worth the price.
Our workplace is close but we wouldn't have found this gem had we not looked online. Tucked in a laneway, this tiny restaurant was nice and cool on a sunny day. We ordered a Karage chicken, Katsu chicken and Udon. We were immediately served a bowl of hot miso soup (well balanced) and egg custard. Both were divine and we were appreciative of the prompt service. We were next provided with our orders + rice and a side of Agadashi tofu each. Again, each food item was well balanced - not too oily. Finally, we were given a spoon of dark chocolate. At about $15 per head we were impressed and will certainly go again. Thank you for lunch.
The sashimi and sushi here is so fresh! The sushi boat is a must and comes with tempura.
It's not the cheapest Japanese restaurant but its worth it
One of my favorite places to have Japanese food in Sydney. Always packed there, better book in earlier if you want to go. Beautiful food and service!
One of the good Japanese restaurants around Sydney, but also at a reasonable price. There are better places to go, but combine it with the cost and Yachiyo is right up there! Sashimi was quite fresh and the size was quite impressive as well.
This place is amazing!! The food was divine and the service too. I've been here 5+ times now, tried different dishes each time and have always left satisfied and happy.
Since I've been to Japan, I've been struggling to find a place that sufficiently satisfies my craving for fresh Japanese cuisine.
This place, however, is absolutely outstanding. I've been here 3 times already and I have not been let down.
The sashimi is super fresh, especially the salmon toro (seriously, it's out of this world) and there are some innovative fusion dishes such as the pork belly katsu with creamy miso yakatori and the creamy lamb croquettes.
Some standouts: any sashimi, agadeshi tofu, popcorn shrimp and chicken katsu
Great Japanese restaurant and Sake bar! Came in for dinner try to order few things from the menu which were unfortunately all unavailable, the waitress advised that they are closing for a while so they do not have many ingredients for few dishes on the menu. Ordered what was available, which were scallop dumplings, fried stuffed chili prawns, sashimi platter, salmon belly skewer, Miso Cod, grilled kingfish nigiri and Yabi Hotpot.
Scollop dumplings were made on premises and it was amazing, dumplings were made with noodles which was very unique. Loved stuffed prawn chili, it wasn't spicy but had slight bite which was surprisingly tasteful.
Sashimi platter was good, it was fresh and I like that fact the slices are quite thin but frankly for the price ($31) I think quantity can improve a bit. Salmon belly skewer was good, it was delectably unctuous.
Miso Cod is definitely the dish that stood out, it was unique and the burnt miso sauce was so flavorful, not to mention the Cod was cooked to perfection.
Grilled kingfish nigiri was okay but I wouldn’t order it again.
Yabi hotpot was rather disappointing, flavor was pretty boring although they were pretty generous with amount of Yabi is in it, it wasn’t anything special.
One thing I really enjoyed was their Sake Service. They have a waiter who will give you a sample Sake tasting so you can decide which sake you want to purchase – available in 300ml or 150ml. We ended up ordering the one from our choice which was quite expensive (almost $40 for 300ml) but it was pretty amazing Sake.
All in all fantastic dining experience, good & unique food and great selection of Sake. I would come back to try more dishes next time!
Sashimi, sushi and tempura boat, nasu dengaku eggplant, fish so fresh it sparkles and some of the most refined sake to wash it all down. Sushi Yachiyo is another restaurant from the Yachiyo Group of which I’ve had the pleasure of reviewing. Having loved the simplicity of Sashimi Tucker in Hunter Connection Food Court I’m really looking forward to the restaurant-style Japanese on offer.
My fav Japanese restaurant is Sydney. They are not top end Japanese but as a Japanese person, I love their style and domestic feeling. This is one of the few Japanese restaurants serve local Japanese cuisine.
This is one of those hidden gems you find and cannot stop thinking about for days.. So happy! $140 for 4 of us and BYO. The food seriously beats the top Japanese restaurants in Sydney. Cannot wait to introduce my friends and family!
You know when you hear so much great things about a place and your expectation is set so high that you almost know you are going to be disappointed before you even set foot in the door? You desperately hope that you will be wrong, but then you are not? Well, that's Sushi Yachiyo for me. It was good, some of the dishes were even very good. It was inexpensive too. And if I lived close by, I would be thanking my lucky stars I have such a great japanese izakaya at my doorstep. But I travelled to be here, because I heard so many great things about it. And I was disappointed. Great little local, nothing more.
Last night was my first Sushi Yachiyo experience. We were greeted warmly into the small restaurant - which as small as it is, had a lot to take in! Our server approached us for drinks, and as we wanted to get the full experience, we asked him for his sake recommendations. He pulled out three bottles for us to have tastings of, and guided us through each. He was also kind enough to order our first few meals for us. He recommended the Blue Fin tuna (their specialty), which of course happened to be the greatest sashimi we had ever had!
All of the food was fresh and delicious, and the service was amazing. Nothing short of five stars!
Tip: make a booking before you get in. By 8.30pm the place was full and they had a waiting list.
It's this tiny hole in the wall restaurant that somehow just gave that hipster vibe. Reviewing as I finished eating. I ordered the chicken katsu lunch set and it was just amazing! The batter was so crispy and the sesame seeds in the batter was sooo good. For $15, we got the mains, salad, rice, miso soup, agedashi tofu and a small dessert. I'd say that's really cheap! Downside was the service was quite inattentive as it took a while for them to realise we'd come in and get us seats, trying to get their attention to order was pretty hard too. The food and price more than make up for it though!
Absolutely great value for money at lunch time. Incredible!
As not much of a seafood eater I was surprised by how delicious the salmon sashimi and salmon sushi were. Whilst I've always enjoyed Japanese food in the past I've found it rather mild and similar in flavors. Here I was blown away by the bold flavorsome dishes. At the recommendation of the waitress we ordered the pork ribs. WOW!! The meat was falling off the bone and the sauce was rich and comforting.
A revelation of Japanese cuisine
Sushi and sashimi, entree-sized ($18.60) was nothing much to look at, but freshness and taste-wise, it was up there among some of the best we had, and we've had a lot . Couldn't resist edamame ($4.50). Sushi Yachiyo's had a slight crunchiness that was so addictive I orde
Yachiyo is a tiny hole in the wall type of restaurant but it's a nice little restaurant. Get there early or book! Tonight it was a light delicious mix of green tea noodle salad, sashimi and popcorn shrimp and avocado. I thought there would be a bit more sashimi but it was still tasty. The green tea noodle salad was fresh and well balanced of flavours and textures. The popcorn shrimp and avocado was a crumbed, beautifully sauced dish. It's reasonably priced and dances on your tongue with different flavours, textures and overall that yummy hit you are looking for. I came here after a few cocktails in the cross at a friend's event so I was happy. Bob kept on interfering somehow with my photos and Mel makes a debut with her red nails too. Green Tea Noodle Salad Sashimi Main Popcorn Shrimp and avocado
Return factor? Absolutely! In fact, I’m thinking of the next opportunity to return and my mouth has been salivating again from writing this… I definitely think Sushi Yachiyo’s strengths are in their sushi and sashimi, and they also have a specials board that is worth investigating. It’s a perfect recipe for a good experience –great quality food, lots of options, awesome staff, and BYO (and an extensive sake menu for those who are interested). Recommend.
During lunch time they offer a great deal through the set menus which includes a number of different entrees and a choice of main. Miss K decided to get the Sashimi Set (above) which came with a mix of kingfish, tuna and salmon sashimi. The sashimi is definitely fresh, we have sashimi so often nowadays that it’s started to become quite apparent which restaurants use fresh fish and those that use of sub par quality. Miso Soup & Salad Agedashi Tofu Chawan Mushi As we were each ordering off the lunch set menu they both included some starters such as a salad, miso soup, chawan mushi and agedashi tofu. I really enjoyed the chawan mushi, the egg has a very silky textur
Toro. the Bluefin Tuna Belly. Delicious and creamy. Just perfect.
Melt in your mouth! What an amazing find! Love everything about this place. Service was outstanding, even offered a sake tasting. Love the intimacy of this place, you can see the chefs cook in front of u. The food, wow! We had the special blue fin tuna which melted in your mouth. Could not fault any dish! Make sure to order the home made gyoza, pocketful of flavour! Can't wait to come back!
The best. THIS place is my favourite Japanese in Sydney. I've been to sushi suma (cheap and plentiful), mino (another fave), toshiya, nazimi and countless sushi trains (goes without saying) and I love returning to yachiyo for intimate or special dinners. The chefs are hardworking right in front of you (or to the side view of you) and the meals are all creative and interesting. I love this place and how it's seemingly unknown, I hope my review doesn't change that! I love it you little gem!
Done both lunch and dinner here now. Amazing flavours and friendly service! Their yuzu sauce is incredible!!! Do yourself a favour and visit!!! Love it!!!!
Absolutely amazing. Fast service, great atmosphere and superb food. Thank you guys for a wonderful dinner experience. See you soon.
Amazing! Great food, great service. A hidden gem
This was my 2nd visit and the food was just as delicious. The scallops were silly soft and the sushi plate of a quality comparable to what you'd find in Japan. The popcorn shrimp reminded me of honey prawns served at Western style Chinese restaurants but were still tasty. Service was quick and friendly, can't wait to go back and try the wagyu cheek katsu!!
This place is phenomenal! Get f#$ked wasabi bistro!
Finally tried Sushi Yachiyo tonight and it was absolutely delicious! Must try: the wagyu cheek katsu (melts in your mouth and the perfect portion), rice bruschetta (absolutely amazing) and the spicy king fish. Service was great, food came out super quick - we can't wait to come back and try more of the menu!!
Oh this place is a hidden gem . I didn't expect much because I haven't had authentic Japanese for a while and the places I've been to lately haven't used sydneys seafood produce to its potential. This place was well worth the friday night trip into darlinghurst and although the place is small it was warm and cosy , the perfect time to eat. We ordered a selection of entrees which included a sashimi platter with one of the nicest tuna sashimi pieces I've ever had. It had such a deep fatty flavour which wasn't too overpowering. Wagyu cheek Katsu which was braised for 2 days Topped with breadcrumb and red bean miso reduction. Just the name sent me ringing with delight . The sauce was delicious and went well with the Katsu. Popcorn cauliflower with chilli dressing and pretty edible flowers on top. Rice bruschetta (omg Japanese bruschetta!) we had to order this special dish because it sounded so interesting! It was spicy tuna on top of crispy rice . Was actually the highlight food of my night. Its pretty much like a piece of tuna sushi but the crispy rice really gave it a special texture and uniqueness to the dish These were just a few of our dishes . I could talk about more but I'd be blabbering on about every little detail. But Everything that came out was honestly amazing and I can't fault a thing about the wonderful food and service . Definitely going to be my new regular Japanese food spot !
Make a booking!. Oishii. Delicious! I've always walked pass this little hole in the wall and never thought to book. When we arrived at 7pm on a wednesday night, they were fully booked.. but politely fitted us in. For entree, we tried Guacamole (nice play on avacado onigiri), Scallop (lightly seared), Fried Oyster (with 3 different dipping sauce) and sea urchin wrapped in a purple basil. Oishii!! (Delicious in japanese!!!) I'm pretty sure the generous serving of sake played no part in this but the Slow Cooked Duck with Wasabi Mash (yum!!!) and Yuzu Miso worked so well and was extremely tender. The Wagyu Okonomiyaki was so fluffy, creamy and topped with lots of fried dumpling pastry bits acting as fried bacon would, on a good ceasar salad. Only criticism was the okonomiyaki was too favoursome for my salt sensitive palate, it was a little much and didn't go hand in hand with the thinly sliced well done pieces of wagyu beef. Other than that, its a hidden little gem.
Food is awesome! Can be a little tricky to find the first time. We've tried quite a few dishes - the "guacamole" special is very good as is the scallop special and the spanner crab roll. Chicken teriyaki is also recommended. Service is great - very attentive, always filling up water glasses without being asked etc. Good value!
Best Japanese in Sydney!!. Without a doubt this is the best Japanese in Sydney. Not only is the food of the highest quality but they manage to make the service match (which is a tall order indeed).
If you're hungy (and I mean hungry) then you can't go past the Yachio Gozen!!
I cannot speak highly enough of this place and it's always a pleasure to eat here!
Great value. Hai. We enjoyed our meal at Sushi Yachiyo. For a surprisingly reasonable $13.50 per person we were well fed. Our waitress, with the oddly named "Trainee" served us each a salad, miso soup, an egg white and bean pudding and then our mains. My main was Chicken Teriyaki with a bowl of rice, while my friend enjoyed his Gyoza. (see pics) Japanese tea included and we were in and out for under $30. Just the right size portions too. Food was really well prepared and cooked and the service was as attentive as one could get. All in all a great value meal and a definite reason to return. Well done? Hai!
Yummy & Authentic. We decided to try Yachiyo after a friend of mine recommended their Agedashi Mushroom & Crispy Skin Salmon. However, last night was delightful and it's nothing like Agedashi Mushroom nor Crispy Skin Salmon. We ordered six type of foods of Yachiyo's Specialties. They were Tuna with Almonds & Miso Sauce, Beef Tataki with Almond and Plum Jelly, Prawn Miso Rolls, Wagyu Okonomiyaki, Yachiyo Chicken Karaage and Kurobuta Yawanakari. All of them are delicious, but the highlight of the night was really the Kurobuta Yawanakari. It's a 2-days broth of braised pork belly and pork rib, which tasted awesome. We will definitely come back to this place to get the Kurobuta and try new other things. Oh, and when we left, Adam from MasterChef entered this restaurant with his friends. That's it, Yachiyo pass the test with flying colours.
Staff are very friendly and accommodating. Food has always been great! I came back here from time to time and quality have never dropped. Recently, booked for a group of 7 and ordered the Me so hungry set. Very generous portion. Good food and good value for money.
Just crave Japanese food so without any expectations we came to this restaurant which has really reviews on google and I wish I can give MORE THAN 5 STARS because the food and the value is just so good especially if you come during lunch like us. We got the chicken karaage and tempura gosens and both are so delicious, really good balance and the ambience is really comfortable, just look at the photos! Highly recommended!
Yachiyo is a good place to go when you're craving for something Japanese and can't decide what to get. They have the "me so hungry" tasting menu that will surely satisfy your Nippon urge. My a la carte staples are their Popcorn Shrimp, Pork Katsu Bun and their Sashimi Selection. Their grilled meats are good but a bit gingery for some so if you're not a fan of ginger then prolly skip their pork belly skewer.
Cool fact about Yachiyo: One more thing I love about this restaurant is their automated toilets. Smart toilets are common in Japan but something that you don't see often in Sydney restaurants this size. No need to touch the seats and flush because it's all automated. So cool, sanitary and so Japanese!
Probably the best value omakase in town these days! Have been craving for omakase for a while, and yachiyo is never a disappointment.
Went there last year with a group of friends and the experience has been amazing. Coming back again this year with another group, which turns out even better.
Price point is reasonable with great value! Good with the premium omakase this time and all the sushi are super fresh and rice texture is just perfect on point! The other dishes in between prawn, abalone, oyster soup, black miso cod, zucchini flower, they match well with the flow of the course. It helps cleanse your palette but also keep you excited throughout the course.
Chef micchan san is super fun as well! We had quite a bit of chat throughout the meal and stayed back for more drinks with him. His vision about omakase and the food industry is so bright which makes him proud of what he does. He is a very genuine chef which aims to bring quality food and Great experience to customers and not jsut focusing about the profit. It is hard to find omakase less than $150 in Sydney these days! Would highly recommend to anyone and can’t wait to go back !
Amazing culinary experience. Thank you to all the chefs and cooks and staff. We sat at the kitchen bar and could watch them make the food and serve it straight to us which was great. The chefs explained each sushi item in the $80 set menu “okasame”
Was plenty of food and all tasted delicious.
+ they have Toto toilets!! ❤️❤️
Delicious food! So cheap and the portion is massive! Highly recommend!
One negative feedback, the table is never cleaned after the customers leave the table after eating! Maybe clean up the table once someone leave will leave a better impression and hygiene.
Had the Omakase for Lunch. Everything was so yummy and worth more than what we paid!
