Easy, simple and delicious meal. There were 8 of us looking for food after the National Art School post-grad show opening, and they had no problems in sitting us down and taking our orders. One of our party ably ordered various plates: agedashi tofu, gyoza, sushi rolls, edamame. Can't complain about any of the dishes. Two of the beers weren't cold enough but when asked were replaced right away. For casual and quick eating, this was a cut above the restaurants over on Oxford Street, and if you've got a craving for Japanese food, this will hit the spot.
Okay but not amazing. Was really looking forward to the Teryaki Salmon but 10 min after taking our order I was informed it was no longer available. As has been my experience with other Japanese places there is no flexibility to change any dishes either. Nothing remarkable.
Had a quick bit to eat here the other night. I am a bit of an eggplant connoisseur and their baked half eggplant with miso was pretty good. Edamame was also very fresh and tasty. If I could fault them though, they served a long grain Chinese rice instead of Japanese variety rice. There is a big different and if you have had the Japanese rice before, you know instantly when you're not getting the real deal.
Don't let the humble, somewhat cramped setting fool you, this spot was the goods! One of the "top 10 Japanese spots in Sydney" I've been meaning to hit up. The tuna nigiri was fresh, perfect texture. Karage was also damn near perfect. Quite large, just the right amount of ginger, super moist chunks of chicken, none a that tiny, overly battered crispy shit. Mainly white flesh. The first 'new' sake on the menus first page was smooth, dry, and hot, just how I like it. Popcorn prawn (see photo) wasn't done the crispy way but the cheesy way. I'm not a fan but my restaurant buddy said it was his favourite dish. What reeeeally made me loose my shit was the Grilled Kingfish Cheeks. You couldn't get a word out of me as I scraped every little delightful morsel out of the fishes head with my chopsticks. Simply amazing. So fresh, and so soft, being the best meat of almost fish and very under rated. You MUST order this dish if you make the right decision and try My Zakaya!
Best Japanese restaurant in Sydney. The quality of food/cost is unbeatable. The food is just amazing, a mix between traditional cuisine and modern dishes. The Camembert fried tempura is definitely of the signatures dishes. The eggplant is amazing, the fish is fresh and melty. You can close your eyes and order everything on the menu, it will be excellent. The service is excellent, the chef is unique, the atmosphere is great. The prices are really affordable. The food is consistently good. I tried many Japanese restaurants as Japanese food is my favourite cuisine and this is the best authentic/unique restaurant I have found in Sydney and Paris. A big thank you to My Zakaya team, I couldn't do without you!
A small and popular place. Not a large selection of items but very traditional and very good. Service and ambiance great. Thoroughly recommended.
Loved it! We ordered:
- salmon nigiri: you only get two pieces just saying, but it was delicious and fresh salmon
- pork udon special: yum! Tasted a lot like okonomiyaki
- Tasmanian roll; lovely and fresh
- salmon tataki: this was my favorite, so tasty!
All the food we had was fantastic and well priced. But I must say that the wait for food was reeeally long and it wasn't even that busy. Good for a casual night out
One of the most interesting meals we've had! Even the most simple dishes have an extra edge, terrific food and service at a reasonable price, it can't be faulted.
There are outdoor and indoor seatings to choose. It is nice to see outside in summer time. The carpaccio dishes are yummy with their dressing. They have daily special menu on the chalkboard too.
Super delicious food, no frills vibe at this restaurant and very reasonably priced.
The grilled scallops are probably one of the most tasty things i have ever eaten.
The sushi is so fresh and authentic.
The best. Amazing food, great value and lovely staff. The camembert tempura and karage chicken are amazing. Highly recommend. Yummmmmmmmmmmm.
Best to make a reservation ahead. Quite an extensive list of Japanese alcoholic drinks. You can request for help with drinks. So it says on the menu.
I love Japanese and this is great . I used to eat at izakawa Fujiyama at Devonshire st and at the cross but this us - half the price , easily as good and the service is delicate and helpful . Yum . Great place
Currently my favourite Japanese restaurant in Sydney. This is currently my favourite Japanese restaurant in Sydney and for a good reason. The food is fresh, tasty and interesting; the service is friendly; and the menu is well priced. There is a wide selection of different foods and, having been to the restaurant multiple times, I can say that they are all great.
June 2019:
Surprisingly very high quality and expertly prepared sushi; melt in mouth very tasty amazing black miso cod; kingfish carpaccio was a bit small in portion size but quite nice too. Great they allow byo wine at $4pp. Very good quality and food selection of izakaya food in a casual setting and reasonable prices. Will be back!

Jan 2014:
Very authentic Japanese cosy restaurant - only has 8 tables though. Personally didn't like the tempura Camembert that much (too filling and heavy). Their zakaya special sushi roll (variety mix of sashimi) was made very well (sushi rice had just right amount of vinegar and it didn't fall apart) however some of the fish wasn't that fresh. Their duck teriyaki was also done nicely with a nice cut of duck, not too sweet or salty. The green tea soba salad was refreshing and the vinaigrette dressing was faultless!
Kushiage!. There actually aren't that many places that feature kushiage in a big way. Came here just to try it. However the camembert tempura is to die for OMFG! Ordered several kushiage and they cooked them all and came out on a single plate. Had no idea how the avocado one would turn out but if you like avocado, deep fried avocado is even better and it's one of the cheaper ones. All pretty good - the place as others have said is pretty small and the prices are on the high side. However, it's a Japanese place run by Japanese - such a rare commodity in Sydney.
Wonderful food and good service. Nice little restaurant. Some of the best Japanese food I've had. Price was average to high
This restautant is the best japanese restaurant in sydney! i like sushi, camembert temura and grilled scallop here!!
I came here for lunch. It has a limited menu but everything you order will be delicious. Everything in the bento box was excellent and the tempura don was the best in Sydney. The staff are super friendly and accommodating. I will definitely be back to try the dinner menu!
This has to be the most fabulous Japanese dining experiences I've had in years! Absolutely delicious and beautifully presented dishes. The daily specials were delicious...I tried them all! I've posted only a couple of their AWESOME dishes...
Beautiful food served perfectly, excellent service. Fully accommodating. Top street vibe.
Authentic modern Japanese dining experience!
Izakaya (Japanese pub) themed restaurant in Darlinghurst offers much more than Izakaya dishes. To celebrate our anniversary, a friend of mine recommended us My zakaya and we were extremely happy that we chose there. Cozy warm atmosphere, friendly staff members and authentic modern Japanese menu. My recommendation is to try at least one item from the daily menu. We had regular Sashimi plate, grilled eel with dashi egg rolls , aburi cured mackerel with shitake rolls, panko fried fish with tartar sauce, Chicken karaage, Misozuke black cods and more. We loved every single dish!
Best you book in advance. Enjoy!!
AMAZING! The food quality and the way it has been prepared is just amazing, it does feel and taste very Japanese ! And their few creative additions such a the camembert tempura, an absolute delight!
A little bit pricy but quality had a price and you pay for what you get definitely 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼
I am personally looking forward to my next meal there !
Very nice, small and cozy Japanese restaurant that is actually operated by Japanese. Great food and very fresh ingredients! Service was also awesome! Impressed by their collection of really rare aged Japanese whiskies like 17 and 21 year old Hibikis and 12 year old Yama! Definitely recommended and will be back! However, there is no toilet within the restaurant so you’ll need to ask them for a key to access it outside. Follow IG @iambruisedlee
