Sir And Mlady Dine Out

Yum cha in the Chinatown area of Sydney is a wonderful way to enjoy lunch. The sheer variety on offer is amazing and The Eight lives up to this. We started our meal with some steamed dumplings. The prawn and garlic chive dumplings were sufficiently transparent to see the green colours through the wrapper. The same applied to the prawn dumplings too. Both had lovely light wrappers and tasty fillings. A delicate dip in the ever-present chilli sauce finished them both off perfectly.

In in 2 minds about my score. Although the food itself that was delivered actually very good and well portioned. There were a number of missing menu items that weren’t available at the time we sat down. They did try and assist and help with that but overall was a pleasant visit
The food here is great. Fresh tasty. The crab is yum and I love that that’s is traditional yum cha in the sense that it’s rushed, busy and not for the anxious or person who doesn’t like being rushed.
It’s so busy that everything is fresh which is so important.
A better yum cha overall and my favourite in sydney at the moment
Food is nice and staff are quite attentive. I enjoyed the BBQ pork buns, siu mai and prawn dumplings. More vegetarian options needed though.

It's been some time since I've been to yum cha but over the years I now know some of the ins and outs of what to do and what not to do. For example, at the Eight in Haymarket, you should get there a bit before 11am on the weekend to ensure you get a table and a head start on the trolleys. After this time, it becomes very challenging to get a table and the food is slower to get around in the trolleys. I can completely relate to some of the reviews about the slower customer service in the peak yum cha hours on the weekend.
Had a great lunch with my friends who come from overseas. This place is a perfect restaurant for chinese food lovers. It is a little bit busy at lunches, I would say you'd better make reservations.
Awesome place for yumcha. The place is really clean and gets really busy during lunch hours. The staff are really helpful and wide menu options to choose from.Tried the fried scallops, sesame prawn toast, veg spring roll, veg dimsums, veg noodles to name a few.The mango pancakes were the winner. The food was really fresh and tasty.
A nice place for yum cha where waiters come to you with trolleys laden with small share plates. This is the traditional form of yum cha and it is by far the most popular and well known variety. Service is fast but getting the dishes you want really depends on where you are seated, especially during peak times like Sunday lunch. Food is generally good, produce is fresh and the ambience is classy without being over the top.
I've come to the Eight for Yumcha twice in the last few weeks. The first time, I came here for yumcha at 1:30pm on a weekday. There was a large variety of dishes to choose from, despite being close to the end of the yumcha session. We did not have to wait long for food to come for us, which was fantastic. The staff were friendly. Our bill came to around $95 for 4 people.
My most recent visit was for lunch on a Saturday at 12:30 pm . Compared to the last time I came, there was a much longer waiting time of around 15 minutes. However, the quality of the food will keep me coming here for more! I would recommend trying this place.
Food: 9/10
Service: 8/10
Ambience: 9/10
I’ve never been in this type of place in Sydney before. I was told it’s always busy but it’s big and you can always find a table, or wait just few minutes. When it’s less busy they move the movable walls, making the room smaller.
Waitresses go around with trolleys, each one with different food and they stop to your table asking you if you want what they have on their trolley or you can skip it and choose food on the next one.
Everything I ate was pretty good, a couple of things were really good.
I dined here with a booking, so had no problem getting a table on the weekend for yum cha. In minutes we were offered tea and first trolley arrived. Was generally happy with the variety of steamed dumplings, noodles, braised organs, fried items and vegetables. All the usual yum cha desserts were there and tastes great. Everything was fresh, hot and good quality. The bill was higher than expected however I was happy given the quality and variety of dumplings. I don't speak Chinese and had no issues with service or ordering.
Best yumcha place in the city, have been there so many times with their nice quality authentic Cantonese dim sum. They offer a wide variety of dim sum that takes me right back to China. It is quite busy during the weekend and you might need to go earlier to avoid the long queue.
Really good yum cha and quick trolley service. Tables turned over quickly so don’t plan to hang around and chat after you stop eating. The owner came and asked us how we enjoyed our meal which was a nice touch. Will definitely go back next time in Sydney.
Located on top level of Market city shopping centre. Top dining environment with nice customer service. Price is a bit high but acceptable, still my fav yum cha spot.
Attended friends wedding in the restaurant and got free parking ticket. The food is nice and very traditional. The seafood is fresh and taste good. But the staff is not that friendly and the waitress who served our table seems not understand English at all...
A great variety of traditional dim sum available in this restaurant. Most of them are cooked well except for the rice paper roll. It's completely bland. This place is really big and can fit hundreds of people. Service is rarely with a smile which is the case for most Chinese restaurants.
Friday around 1pm. It was quiet busy but we were led to our table straight away. The food is good, fresh and well balanced. The service is prompt.
The only down side is the restaurant is really big so the carts may not get to you. But all
In all would come back
The eight modern Chinese restaurant in Chinatown. We came in the lunch time for yum cha. The food was tasty but not too surprising. It was called the best yum cha in Chinatown and seems just average. Not my favourite yum cha experience
Absolutely huge restaurant which packs hundreds of people. Heaps of options for yumcha which is great as you get to try a variety of dishes. We ordered all kinds of seafood, dumplings, vegetables and soups. All the food is reasonably fresh (you can’t expect a yum cha restaurant to be as fresh as an ala carte restaurant though). It’s also very noisy inside so not that suitable for intimate gatherings.
Tried their Yum cha and dinner 🍽
For their yum cha, it’s actually combine the traditions and the modern. They use the trolly - dishes look fresh but sometime if they are busy some tables around the corner will be left behind. So not too many choices compared with the Marigold.
For yum cha, I used to think they are the best but not anymore.
Dinner, with plenty of Cantonese dishes and they are quite plentiful, suitable for a group of people.

Food was great! Enjoyable ambience not super noisy. I saw a few dishes done differently from typical yumcha places and it was refreshing to try new flavors! We were neglected a bit after refusing to order from a few carts though, why? Xihuahua 🐶
I've been to The Eight numerous times and this yum cha place never failed me. I've always had a good experience. A must try if you want decent yum cha in Sydney.
We had a farewell yumcha lunch at the Eight. It was quite wondrous as plates of food just magically appeared on our table as soon as we sat down - all at once! I think we didn’t even order half of them lol having said that, food was yummy and reasonably priced. Everyone enjoyed themselves!
My favourite and number 1 go-to place for yumcha! Always attentive service with aunties and their carts going by every couple of seconds asking if we want another dish. Although some people might find it annoying, I love the culture of yumcha and really don't mind the noise and all as it all adds up to the authentic atmosphere. Food is always amazing with my favourite dimsum dish: Ngao Cheong Fun - juicy beef mince wrapped in a sheet of rice noodle) with a sweet soy sauce to complete the dish. This time around we also ordered the Har Gow (prawn dumplings) and Fung Zhao (chicken feet) which were tender, juicy, and so tasty. I definitely recommend going with a group of people so you can try as many dishes as possible! (Although they do have square tables for small groups or couples as shown in the photo.)
Went there on Sunday 11am, full of people. They serve very good dimsum, my favourite is the chicken feet, very tasty and juicy... will return next time.. 这里早茶好好吃 人很多 推车也很多..
The service was fine but yum cha was really good
Love BBQ Pork and chives dumplings
The minion bun is kind of their special and you have to order it. We waited 20 minutes for it
It’s also my first time to try steamed radish cake and it’s good
Serving fresh piping hot yum cha dishes and fast services. The only downside is the queue and the disorganised wait system. There is no ticket system and people had to wait for more than 1 hrs. They also conduct random ‘lucky calls’ so some people can cut in line. But a super popular place.
Large variety of yum cha selection
Prawns sweet and densely packed
Serving sizes larger than most restaurants
Service was fast with ladies forcing food on you
Definately a great place for yum cha
I have never been to The Eight before and school holidays mean yum cha when we are in the city.
I liked the decor (slightly fancy as it was described and we got a good table.
The food was quick to come out.
We ordered all the usual yum cha stables. The scallop dumplings were the stand out dish. Would like to go back soon for dinner.
This place is my favourite yum Cha in the city but not of all time. The food is very nice and the people are always great. It does take a long time to get into though so be prepared to wait.
One of the better yumcha places around Chinatown. Always busy, and food is always fresh for this high traffic volume. One big tick for no soggy sorry dumplings in trolleys.
Service is barely any due to same reason, staffs are too busy to look after you. My only advise is get there early and get sit next to main path, catch every trolley walk pass by. Be tough to the trolley ladies and be brave to say no.
Seems like they have made minion buns now? Didn't try it, will be back soon.
To sum up, food 4, service 2.5, environment 3.5
The food in general was good and the service was slightly better than other yum Cha places in Sydney. The most surprisingly good dish was the 流沙包 (in picture). We ordered it, wasn't expecting to have minion picture on it, delighting both the adults and child at the table.
In Mandarin, “eight” is phonetically similar to “fortune”, hence why it is regarded as an auspicious number in Chinese culture. You may not find your fortune in the The Eight Modern Chinese Restaurant located in the heart of Chinatown but you will certainly find authentic Chinese cuisine prepared with quality ingredients and delivered with efficient service.
Before you say 4 really...?!? I want you to understand "context". This wasn't just any normal meal at the Eight but part of the Miss Chinese Australia Sydney Pageant so throw on your cooking for 30 tables hat that's around cooking for 350+ guest at once....
Now let's be honest, banquet food at this scale is edible at best...come on we've all been to those "I better eat something first" weddings - don't lie :)
But that night was definitely quite the unicorn...
Foie Gras stir fried Snow crab...pumpkin butter Lobster...salted egg prawn...the fish two ways and usual the fried rice, noodles, assorted BBQ meat platter and whole fried chicken.
That Snow Crab was a stand out...i'm glad my other fellow diners were very busy watching the bikini clad contestants...and well all the crab was basically mine - score!
The rest was above average and honestly I'm quite surprised I came out of that meal very full...so please I'm interested the next time an event is hosted at the Eight...where's a friend that is getting married when you need one!!
Had a yum cha there with friends! Food was really good at a very reasonable price!!! Service was better than expected! Very crowded and full with customers.
One of the better yum chas in Sydney.
Their "gow" skin is light and good density.
Good variety - slightly expensive - decent service - great atmosphere - parking
Pretty much sums up The Eight.
Their dinner however in my opinion comes in second to Golden Century.
Oh and they have amazing mango pancakes. Probably the best in Sydney. Good ratios
Located in Market City, the modern style decor is not so traditional for chinese. The beautiful rainbow colours of the chairs catches your eye. I love sitting around a table so you can see and talk to everyone and easily access the food via the lazy susan. . Our menu was amazing and we got to try all the best bits the restaurant has to offer, they also came around and prepared the duck infront of us.
Always satisfied with yum cha adventures here. Looks and feels much better since the renovations. A lot of different dishes come around on the carts. Great atmosphere with the buzz in the restaurant. Well worth the wait. Service could be a bit more attentive but I get that it is a busy place. Do not really have any standout/favourite dishes. Everything is of a good quality. Keep it up!
*****
Take note that this is of course all based on my unqualified opinion!
My considerations: 1. Food 2. Value 3. Service 4. Atmosphere
️️Yay for an affordable, quick and tasty Yum Cha experience. Was seated promptly once entered and trolleys travelled around frequently enough for you to grab all you need within the first 10 mins ! Not the best chicken feet I have had in Yum Cha but will do. The highlight would be the mango sago. It was the perfect sweetness and consistency. It also had nice chunky pieces of mango right through it.
A Chinese banquet at The Eight will delight the senses as you journey through traditional Cantonese cuisine. A trio of yum cha delicacies (har gow, siu mai and vegetarian dumplings) was a delicious but unexpected start to our feast as yum cha is not traditionally served at dinner. This was followed by Peking duck pancakes, San Choy Bow, stir fried fish fillet with vegetables, beef fillet with black pepper sauce, sweet and sour king prawns, chilli chicken, mushrooms with bok choy and their signature fried rice with prawns, fish roe and broccoli stalks.
If you're an adventurous eater, or a lover of spice, I'd recommend the chilli chicken. Prepared with a mix of Sichuan pepper and dried chillies, it's a mouth-numbing experience that will have you going back for more.
Get a group of six together to enjoy the award winning celebration banquet menu which includes eight dishes and a complimentary bottle of Moët for just $50 per person!
Another delicious and fun Zomato meetup.
Yum Cha for breakfast
Best part-- pork & fresh watermelon juice!
Great atmosphere & left with a full stomache
Extensive menu
Will be back
Recommended by friends as best yum cha place in Sydney. There is a long queue but only wait for about 5 minutes at 12:30ish. I likes prawn dumplings, spinach prawn dumplings, beef ribs and mango pancake :)
will definitely come back to check out lava buns and durian puff. Gotta come early!
Great food and great customer service.
I've been here a few times and its always been a pleasant experience...
Would definitely come back
:)
A bit worse than Zilver, in my opions, for two reasons, first, more expensive than Zilver and than some food is less tasty (e.g. Steamed Chicken Feet). Still good though, but when I visited at about 1:30 pm at Sunday, I almost did not get desserts except egg tarts(although they are very very good~~😁). Could use some improvements.
The Eight are part of the group who bring you the popular Zilver restaurants. They are masters of modern Chinese cuisine, specialising in modern fusion and traditional Chinese cuisine, with a special focus on live seafood. We sampled a few dishes from their "Sichuan Banquet for 4" menu which encompasses 2 appetizers, 1 main, 2 sides and a complimentary dessert. Some dishes were very familiar, some completely new to us, but our taste buds were singing for the whole duration. With hearty portions and an abundance of flavour, the banquet is definitely our pick for a fabulous winter dinner.
long time no yum cha and the Eight did not fail me 👌🏻 all the dumpling and buns are yummy however the mango pancake was not what i remembered and expected :). Love the porridge though 😘
Ive been here a few times and i was only disappointed once when we sat in the little room and barely got any food. Because the food is awesome.
Oh that deep fried taro yuuuummmmm. Duck pancakes and gai lan in oyster is a standout to me.
Man i love those trolley ladies one got really po when we didnt want the whiting lol then even more po when i couldn't stop laughing lol. It seems buzarre when waitstaff are rude and its funny but ive come to expect this at yum cha and also to have to yell out and stand up.
Back to the food though it is a standout and so fresh the prawn in flat rice noodles was deliciously soft crunchy and perfect.
I get there about 11am usually its good timing and busy then
UPDATE: went gere today and can barely kift my hand to write lol.
5 of us = too many dishes! 155 bux pretty damn food i think! Plus got stamped and 3 hours free parking woohoo!
Ok taro cakes are still awesome. Had prawn mushroom dumplings which slid down like a dream.
Green beans wirh pork ordered two because it was divine and ym somewhat healthy plus gai lan oyster sauce which was the best ive had today. Great hangover cure was the crispy duck pancakes mmmm!
Vegetable dumplings were great texture. The best for me was the sesame prawn rolls omg kill me i smashed down two plates.
Bbq pork rice rolls cheong fun but with pork. Ih devo no bbq pork came out i was hanging out bigtime! Mango pancakes nice and plump and too sweet for me custard tarts.
Of course i needed several cokes and tea to rehydrate from the previous nights 6 too many beers.
My belly has stopped complaining lol now im just reminiscing of yhat beautiful chaos called yum cha!!!
The Eight Modern Chinese is a Chinese restaurant serving flavours of Canton.
With Cantonese dishes and flavours, it's as close as you can get before going to south Chinese.
With the winter coming in, this restaurant has introduced their new Sichuan menu.
Sichuan spices cooked into Cantonese dishes offering a fusion of different Chinese flavour.
Having just lunch or entertaining guest, The Eight is a place where you can sit down and have a meal in luxury.
Chinese restaurant with a big menu located in Market city where you can indulge in a banquet menu fit for a King. Customer service is attentive and the food is great. I highly recommend bringing all your friends and relaxing in one of the private rooms while feasting on the delicious cuisine.
[Invite] The Eight, is classic Sydney and Sydney Chinatown. It’s a Modern Chinese restaurant on the upper level of Market City and situated right in the heart of ChinaTown. A favourite amongst many a Sydneysider and the local Chinese community, it is heaving as the 720 seater restaurant is filled with patrons indulging in yumcha and modern Chinese eats.
The eight modern Chinese delivers on Asian food cravings. I was lucky to be able to sample their new menu and tumbled out of the restaurant full of the fluffiest of rice and the most succulent of meats.
If you're visiting The Eight, go in a big group so you can try one of everything. When it comes to starters, pounce on the beef terrine as soon as it hits your table. I'm a meat fanatic, chicken in particular, but found myself scrapping around my bowl for the last slice of bean cured with coriander. With the cold dishes for appetizers done, it was onto some belly warming goodness.
The diced chicken with chilli and Sichuan pepper was phenomenal, I was sneakily pausing the round table topper at the chicken everytime it spun past me. The king prawns in sweet chilli sauce were humongous and packed a prawn flavour punch with each bite. My favourite of the day however was the beef fillet with black pepper sauce. The meat was tender, flavoursome and oozed sauce; everything you could ever want in a Chinese beef dish.
Can't wait to return and try the yum cha!
Our favourite yumcha place. Always busy and have a long queue. Better go there early to avoid long wait. Large variety of food to choose from, all are freshly steamed or cooked.
Probably one of the better yum cha around, so not surprising we got there at 11:30 and a queue had already been formed. Got seated in about 20 mins. Ordered a few of the usual suspects, chicken feet, har gow, siu mai, pork spare ribs to start. Food were good as always. We were seated one table in from the trolley path (another table in between), so not easy to check out the trolleys and what's in them. Couldn't find some of my favourites, so we ended up just getting the tofu dessert & mango pancakes and left. Overall, worth a 20 mins wait, but wish they could make the ordering simpler by also offering the order form.
Surprisingly decent yum cha place, crowded at times but a good yumcha experience. Best dish imo was the cake thing (the brown steamed cake). Make sure you get a large group so you can eat a variety of dishes.

It's nice to see that this restaurant has gotten a major facelift and name change in the last few years. It definitely looks modern and still retains the feel of a Chinese restaurant.
I've been here a few times for yum cha and dinner. Always have a good experience every visit.
The yum cha has all the dishes you would find at any yum cha places. Same with the dinner menu. I find whatever you order, they are all pretty delicious. I find the ingredients are always so fresh and presented very well.
Who would not like dim sum!? Oh my goodness, it was such an amazingly great thing to have Cantonese breakfast or brunch to start a day! They were all delicious and fabulous.
Service staff would pull some trolleys walking around u and u could get the dishes directly from the trolleys. I think that's quite convenient rather than order by the counter.
One of my favourite places for Yum Cha in Sydney. I've only been on weekends when there's a bit of a wait for a table but you can get a number and pass the time in Timezone. Service at Yum Cha is never great but they're pretty good here and most importantly they're efficient. There's a really good selection of food with some hard to find dishes, you really can't go wrong. Everything comes out hot and fresh.
Scrumptious yum cha feast is what you'll expect here. There is a great variety in food, pretty good atmosphere, not overly expensive either. It's one of the better chinese restaurants in the city and therefore very popular so try to avoid the peak hours if you're really hungry.
The Eight is, at the point in time, one of the best Yum Cha restaurants in Sydney. I say this because I know the quality is not consistent anymore at any Yum Cha due to the quick turnover of chefs who move on to chase more money due to a yum cha chef shortage.
When it comes to Yum Cha, there are several rules to remember to enhance your experience:
1. Good service translates to your drinks/tea being refilled, your requests are met and your plates are cleared. That's all. Please do not expect Ala carte type service otherwise you will be disappointed. The idea of yum cha is to catch up with family and friends and to embrace the crazy noisy atmosphere that comes with it. Having your requests met is enough. No one will ever ask you how your meal was so forget it!
2. Position - being seated strategically helps! You want a table ideally in the main thoroughfare where the trolleys can go past frequently and preferably close to the kitchen so that some of the popular dumplings don't get all taken by the time the trolley gets to you. A quiet table in the corner of the restaurant will ensure, you are last to get the selection of dim sum from the trolley.
We have always liked The Eight where we have experienced and excellent variety and well maintained standards. There were only several occasions below par but on the whole, its very good considering the amount of people they cater to. We arrived today (Saturday) at 1pm and were immediately escorted to our table. The table was well positioned close to the entrance of the kitchen and the main walkway where the trolleys must come down. Immediately, we were offered our favourite dumplings and everything came together like clockwork. So far, so good….
The Har Gau - prawn dumplings had a good filling and were perfectly steamed - the best dim sum of the day. The Sui main (mini dim sims) were good but missed the shitake, the other dumplings were good and the chicken feet retained its texture and marinated well with an inviting spicy undertone. The Salt and Pepper Spanner Crab was well cooked and retained the sweetness of the crab meat. The BBQ Pork buns were excellent where the bun had an element of elasticity and the filling fresh. The egg tarts were warm and the pastry was perfectly cooked and melted in the mouth. I have also frequented The Eight for dinner where the food is excellent and the service very attentive.
It's very rare to fully enjoy a Yum Cha experience but fortunately today we did. The only downside was that sitting in such a busy location came with the noise of trolleys and constant waiters rushing past and dishes clanging like a building site but it's a small consolation if the food is always this good!
What a delightful restaurant. Came here for yumcha and it was very busy - usually a good indicator of good food.
The steamers were large and hot and very flavoursome. The service was also good and the restaurant looked quite pleasant.
There is a good parking deal if you dine there and park in the Market City Car Park which is handy. You can then take the lifts straight up to the level where the restaurant is located.
YUM CHA SATURDAY!
Big day at Paddy's followed by a big yum cha foodie adventure in Chinatown and The Eight was our first pick!
Seated very quickly and inundated with trolleys full of glorious Chinese food. We quickly filled up our table and sat in silence while we ate dumplings to Chinese broccoli and mango pancakes!
The service is never something we have high hopes for but the food tasted aaamazing! And we left very full and very satisfied.
Very happy with this food experience and we will definitely be back!
Great place for yum char. Expect all the bustle. Eat all the dumplings. It gets busy on the weekends so call ahead to book. Kid friendly with high chairs available.
With vehicle parking provided below, Market City in Sydney's Chinatown can be a hive of activity any day or night of the week. With an upper level food court, ground floor supermarket, clothing outlets and Paddy's Market at street level, it can be a focus for many thronging the southern end of Sydney CBD. Recently I had yum cha with four other friends at The Eight, located on the upper most floor. The staff still converse in Cantonese in this restaurant, apart from English and Mandarin. The food trolleys really get going from around 11am even if the place opens earlier. And remember, do always get your tea pot topped up by the male staff members, and watch for that table card being stamped by your orders to add up. The clutter in any yum cha session can be minimised by asking staff to clear finished plates.
The Eight, located in the top level of Market City in Chinatown is the go-to spot for a traditional yum cha. The fluffy pork buns are absolutely divine. They have a huge range of steamed dumplings, my favourite being the pork and chive. There's deep fried goodness too ranging from spring rolls with that elusive tangy red sauce to small crunchy squid pieces. My absolute favourite though, would have to be the red chicken wings! So tender and succulent. For those of you who have not ever tried chicken feet, I highly recommend you give it a try. Just ignore the fact that they are feet and nibble on it. You will be amazed. Service is excellent and hot herbal tea is provided. Lazy Susan is available for large groups which is very convenient if you're looking to order a bit of everything.
