Review Dondon - Sydney

3.5/5 Affordable price and big portion. However I felt the agedashi tofu didn’t fully cooked, tofu tasted really weird. unatama don is fine, but please don’t put ginger on top again, so weird 😂

A cheap and cheerful Japanese eatery on Oxford st. Enjoyed a Japanese curry with a friend. Prices are great for the food you get. Decent portion sizes, you won’t walk away hungry.
Brendan Wong
Cheap and cheerful Japanese eatery that is run by Japanese staff. The prices aren't expensive and they serve a range of Japanese dishes, including rice bowls, sushi and Udon. The food won't blow your mind but the portions are generous and will satisfy big eaters.

Good chicken karage Ramen! The broth tastes more like they do in Tokyo than other Sydney places. Best to be hungry! It’s not a fancy place but tasty good value

Don Don Japanese food Darlinghurst has been feeding locals for about two decades - while other eateries come and go, this establishment remains. There's nothing fancy about the decore, nothing pre-made, and that's what keeps the locals coming back for more - it's all about fresh produce made to order at very reasonable prices.

Such a brilliant little Japanese restaurant. I have been a few times now and they never disappoint. The staff are lovely. Can get a bit crowded but worth waiting for a table. Very reasonable prices. Took 4 friends last time and they all liked it and a few have gone back.

Delicious food! Best Japanese place in Sydney! Great customer service and good pricing especially for the city.

In the world of COVID19 we had take always from here! The service was quick and the food was delicious! The portions were also very generous!

Don Don’s is an institution. With so many places on Oxford Street coming and going, opening and closing down, there’s something comforting that this cheap, cheerful and casual restaurant has been feeding folks from Darlinghurst for so long, I suspect 20 years or more. The menu looks like it comes from then too, and the prices! $12 for a lunch bowl where you get a little appetizer too, is very cheap for inner Sydney.

This place with it's amazing Indians and the great variety India menu is your go to place if you want some really delicious Japanese cuisine they have everything you want and it is as per your taste buds

2.5 for me. Small, casual cafe which was surprisingly busy on a weekday evening with students and non-students. I think it's a BYO as a few people had bottles of wine on their tables.

I had the chicken teriyaki bento box and my friend had the udon. Food is cheap here and I think it's reflected in the quality which, in my opinion was very average. The gyoza were probably the best and even those were slightly on the hard side.

All in all, I would say the food here is more suited for lunch or takeaway. Plentiful of staff so service is good. They're not necessarily the friendliest but are efficient.

Cheap and yummy does the trick!

Walked past during my lunch break and popped in to grab a takeaway chicken katsu don for $11.50. It was pretty busy for a weekday so I had to wait about 10 minutes for my food but hey - that means it's cooked right there and then yeah?

Got back to my office and see that I have inside the bag... two containers. One is a smaller one with soup. The other was the massive bowl of chicken katsu don! And when I say massive; it was massive. Way bigger than many other asian takeaway I have had in the city.

The ton of rice and the chicken was so plentiful that I couldn't even finish the meal!

As I was waiting for my meal, I saw people eating dishes in and the bento box looked delightful... the lunch special is about 14 dollars and looks to be great value. I will definitely be coming back!

Always love this place. Food is fresh to death and it’s very cheap. Yes it’s small so it can be busy but that’s a good sign. Their Take away soups in bed get me through winter

Don Don’s is a cute little Japanese place with real character. It looks like one you would come across in New York City. The service there was really friendly and quite prompt. I had the Sukiyaki Don. Quite well priced for the serving size. The broth tasted really authentic and the beef was cooked beautifully.

I had really liked going here before. However on Saturday night I had the pork egg noodle soup (never had before) and have had the WORST food poisoning ever. In bed for 48 hours straight, head spinning, not able to eat, sick over a dozen times, having to take time off work. The dizziness started less than 30 mins after eating there. Will NEVER eat there again.

Always looks quite packed so came in to see what the fuss is about. Overall prompt service and reasonable priced Japanese food. Ordered the ebi-tenzaru udon set, oyako don and also teriyaki chicken salad. The ebi-tenzaru udon was my favourite as I am crazy for cold udon which you dip into a cold soup and slurp up. Will be back to sample the sushi and other things on the menu some other time.

Great very charming experience. Great ebi ten udon/ tempura udon/ mostly all the boxes. Good customer service. Flavour is very good. Have been a regular for thus place for years. Lov it

I like Dondon foods but dont like some of waitress. A waitress is always no smile and cold. She took a menu roughly from my table after I ordered...I dont often see the rude Japanese waitress even in sydney. Never in Japan. Also not busy time, they r very busy for chatting chatting in Japanese. was soooo annoyed me!! They dont care the customers even they want to order or ask abt something. I guess DonDon owner cant say any to staff. Hey !! DonDon owner!! Speak up!! Teach to ur staff what customer service is!!

My new best value restaurant in Sydney. $10.50.
You just never know what is around the corner in this city.. and this place, literally a block from where I eat all the time, is an absolute rock star.
Firstly, very Japanese and a very authentic vibe.
It's a small place but feels really cosy and the service is very friendly and excellent.

Given the name of this place I had to try the Don. I went with the chicken katsu don. Given my lofty expectations, the dish did not disappoint - damn that Don is good!
Perfectly (seriously perfectly) soft rice. Moist, juicy chicken covered in a beautifully crisp crumb. And all covered in a soy/sugar egg mixture lightly fried and draped over everything. The pickled ginger is like the icing on top of a cake, so good.

I want to go back and have another bowl right now! Get there
Excellent choice for a rainy day. One does not want to be any closer to a fancy deco after you are half drowned In the street. The simple water proof furnitures make you at ease.

The food is simple, warm, not demanding on the stomach. It gives you the energy to step into the chill world outside again.

Cute little Japanese restaurant. Food is very well priced for what you get. The food was very satisfying and I have no complaints on the quality and service :)
The RnB Diary
No fuss no frill basic Japanese food around $10. I have tried udon, bento box and beef don, they were all delicious and generous portions. Don't expect posh decor or service, you actually have to pick up the food yourself from counter. But it is definitely good value for money.
Don't Believe The Hype
Very good value Japanese food. This place is not fancy. Its basic Japanese food don't reasonably well at a cheap price.

Food 3.5/5
Value 5/5

Was walking along Oxford street and was quite hungry for some Japanese at the time.. And I happened to walk by Don Don and it was packed so I decided to give it a go, and lucky I did!

The place looked old and dull, but the food was far from old and dull. I ordered the "chicken katsu udon", and to my surprise it was quite flavoursome (a bit too flavoursome "sweet" for me, and I have quite the sweet tooth as well). I feel as if they put a lot of sugar in their broth to make the food more tasty. But for $10.50 a dish you can't quite complain! So I think this place is good if you want a quick meal at a good price!

✌🏼️ *** Showtime ***

Great local for work lunch. Nice taste for the price ($10 average). Have tried almost everything on the menu and nothing bad so far. What's happening on the wall mural, is the woman on the left holding a hamburger?
Pollo_pesce_me
I have been coming here over the years very affordable japanese restaurant in the area and food is quite delicious. Service is on the slow side and in peak hour place gets pretty busy. I love that you get free udon soup with meal. I recommend chicken teriyaki don and ebi don.
Matchachacha
Our family has been coming here for many years, for the always better food & often cheaper prices than any nearby Japanese restaurants.

Don't come at peak times, or in a big group, or in too much of a hurry.

Do order tempura any way (rice, udon, cold noodles, the hand rolls, the vege tempura sushi (also makes a good takeaway).
Greedygreedyguts
I'm a regular and love this place but I came at 4pm on a weekend and told they don't serve sushi at this time. WTF? Really testing my loyalty.
Alessandro
Great Japanese meals with no frills!!! Very reasonable pricing. It is a very small eatery in the heart of Darlinghurst bustling Oxford Street strip. Be prepared to wait for seating on busy days. I must ad: well worth waiting!!!! Many of my friends whom I recommended Don Don are now regular customers... 👍
The Hedonist Life
Synonymous with cheap Japanese food on Oxford st since forever, Don Don is a local favourite.
Weekendfoodescapes
I was looking for a quick and cheap eat on oxford st. This is a good, cheap, steady eddy sort of place to eat. I ordered the udon chicken salad. A surprisingly good mix which is not your typically on a Japanese menu. My friend was happy with her chicken noodle dish as well. Prices ~ $10

This is the time when I say “don’t judge a book by its cover” and I really mean it. Shop number 80 on Oxford St, something which you will walk pass and never notice. A local told me about it, and was so enthusiastic about how affordable it is. Belle and I finally went to try it out after a long day of uni.
This little shop or as some like to call it “a hole in the wall”, looks like something you would find in downtown Japan.

I couldn’t go past the pork katsu don – one of my favourite Japanese meals – a bowl of rice topped with deep fried pork cutlet, egg and shallots. The pork was incredibly tender, and I love the egg which was scrambled and drizzled on top of the pork. It was definitely a generous serving, didn’t even manage to eat half the rice!
Mr Shawn & Miss Chicken
Yay Don Don. We're pleased to see a new generation of folks appreciating the joys of true hole-in-the-wall eating. There's more to life than pulled pork tacos.
Heather
Great for takeaway. DonDon is fast japanese ready to go. Their curries & udon are hearty for cold winter nights and at under $25 for takeaway for a couple great value.
Cazbetteridge
Really disappointing, tasteless. We got a takeaway from Don Don this evening and have to say we were thoroughly disappointed, it seems so authentic and we really expected better.

The 2 dishes we got were just completely tasteless, we ended up throwing it in the bin and ordered pizza instead. Its definitely the worst meal I have eaten at a restaurant in Sydney.
The Squirrels
Worse Japanese in Sydney. Tasteless food, really poor service, not worth any money.

Excellent cheap and very popular. Call ahead if you're after take away
Nic.dijken
Best take away in Sydney!. Excellent quality food and amazing prices, very tender meats and authentic flavouring. We go back here every week and can safely say everyone we know in the area is addicted, you can't beat Don Don for a delicious hangover cure!!
Ma.curimoura
Love it so much. Extremely fresh fish! amazing food, really happy always when go there
ps: takoiaki is the best
Samantha90
A horrible experience. A "real" japanese style-no one understands your needs clearly.wash dishes by hands and the flavour is a disaster. sometimes the rat gives you a pleasantly surprice, horrible experience , never return.

Whenever you are hungry and cant spend much. Not the best, but not the worse!
HH
Cheap, food doesn't have much flavour. Worst gyoza I have ever had! I guess you get what you pay for...
Car Rin
Whilst the food was cheap and the service was good we were disappointed by the lack of flavour of the dishes and the greasiness of the tempura. Wouldn't return.
Rhys
Excellent. Can't go past this place for cheap and cheerful Japanese. The service can be non-existant at times, in an aloof kind of way. But the food is so good and well-priced.
Grrr
Don don is the best for cheap and cheerful Japanese!
Cathy Xiao Chen
Cheap, hearty japanese. It's a cosy little place though there's not much in the way of ambience. locals come here for the cheap, hearty food. be prepared to wait a little while as it's often crammed on busy friday nights. don't forget to write your name on the list.
